D
The winners each received a trophy for their achievement.

The boys not only had loads of fun with team building and fun learning ac vi es, but also received valuable life lessons and encouragement. The camp took place at Elandskloof Trout Farm near Dullstroom and focused on teaching the boys about gender respect, standing up against peer pressure and issues they might be faced with like sexual abuse, awareness of sexually transmi ed diseases, puberty and the changes in their bodies, teenage sexuality, the importance of abstaining and challenges of teenage pregnancy as well as the importance of educa on. These issues where addressed through group sessions as well as fun and playful learning such as drama. The boys enjoyed the obstacle course and working together with pipe ac vi es to enhance teamwork. They closed off their camp with a fun ‘paint war’. Fine for pollution yields long term results This week Steelpoort Academy was in the spotlight as the Department of Education visited them to see what they’ve done with funds allocated to them through a fine paid by Samancor Chrome Ltd. In 2015 the Green Scorpions from the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) mentioned the fine of Samancor Chrome Ltd for a pollution and waste case against them as an example of how the ‘polluter pays’. The conviction was done in 2014 in the Lydenburg Magistrates Court and followed a plea agreement between the State and Samancor Chrome Ltd. This came after an investigation that commenced in 2007 regarding unlawful
hazardous waste activities at Samancor Tubatse in Steelpoort. The fine came after the Company was found guilty of contravening section 29(4) of the Environmental Conservation Act. Samancor Chrome Ltd was fined R200 000 but in an additional court order required them to pay a total of R1 million. R700 000 to DEA and R100 000 in respect of prosecution costs, apart from the fine. The DEA had to “in conjunction with Steelpoort Primary School, liaise with the Department of Education to develop environmental initiatives for the benefit of the school”. This week the Department of Education shot a documentary about the progress achieved in this regard. The initiatives are a work in progress and include a water purifying system, water irrigation This week the Tubatse Busisystem and a hothouse ness Forum (TBF) distanced project used to educate itself from scamsters making the lower grades about use of intimidation and using plants, growing food their name to allegedly extort and more.
