Gazette 1000 for charity

Laerskool Ohrigstad decided to reach out to the less privileged just before winter and collected 1000 non-perishable home essentials and food just before the school holidays. On Wednesday they handed it to a representative of a local church for orderly distribution. Said one parent “We are not big on tinned food. Now we have none. My child raided the pantry and took everything for this charity drive”! Said a reprtesentative of the school “Winter is coming, and not everybody has something to eat. We must be sensistive towards the needs of others”.

Library Week Celebrated in Burgersfort Matthew 7:21-23 (NIV) 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

Every year the Burgersfort Library at the Old Civic Centre hosts Library Week. During this week schools are invited to visit the library and learn how to make use of the books and computers. This week started off with two schools visiting on Monday and Tuesday and three on Wednesday. Learners had the opportunity to browse the books, work on the computers and do internet searches. They also had activity papers to colour in and complete. There was no age limit to the visitors coming

for the Library Week celebrations. Some of the youngest visitors were not even 3 year old. Ms. Dimakatso Mogolane, the local Librarian said that the public should make use of the facility. Learners can use the library for research of their school projects and the friendly library staff will always be willing to assist. To Ms Mogolane it is important to expose the learners that do not have access to internet at home or libraries at their schools to the local facility.

Drug bust in Ohrigstad The Ohrigstad SAPS made a very significant breakthrough in the fight against drugs. On 23 March 2017 at about 23:50 they were busy with an intelligence driven crime prevention operation led by Ohrigstad Vispol commander W/O Manamela when they arrested two suspects aged between 25 to 26 years on the R36 road next to the Caltex garage. The suspects were arrested for the possession of 8 plastic bags containing dagga with an estimated street value of R20-000. The two suspects were arrested after the SAPS pulled over a suspicious brown mazda bakkie on the R36 road. The SAPS discovered the black bag

containing 8 plastic wrapped with a brown masking tape which the suspects confirmed to be dagga inside and they were arrested immediately and charged with possession of dagga. The suspects appeared briefly before the Praktiseer magistrate court on 27 March and their case has been reminded to Monday 3 April for further investigation. They will remain in custody. Meanwhile on Monday 27 March another suspect was arrested on the gravel road to Kaspersnek farm by SAPS crime prevention members for possession of dagga. He had a bag of dagga weighing 0,012 gram, and he will appear in court soon or he can plead guilty and pay an admission of guilty fine to the amount of R300-00 to R500-00. The SAPS will continue to arrest anyone who is found to be in possession of or dealing with drug. “We want to send a strong message to all drug lords that our members are working tireless to clamp down on them and that their clocks are ticking. It is only a matter of time before we arrest them” said Sgt Phokane. (Information and photographs: Sgt Kholofelo Phokane, Ohrigstad SAPS)

The Ohrigstad Sports Complex is still not finished. Three years and going, millions of rands and still no clear indication of when the facility will be completed. In the meantime where there was supposed to be nice thick grass by now, someone is diligently watering the ever growing weeds.

SODA On Friday last week the State of the District Address by Executive Mayor of the Sekhukhune Distrct Municipality, Cllr. Keamotseng Stanley Ramaila took place at the Moses Mabotha Civic Hall. This annual address is to highlight the achievements of the District within the past year and give residents an idea of what to expect in the coming year. It is closely tied with the budgets and the progress made on projects within the IDP and budget. Thorny issues such as water and electricity supply are also included. The economic development of the area and challenges that are being experienced also form part of this important speech.
