ith this 20th edition of the THE ONE Yacht & Design, this time in mother-of-pearl, we reach our

5th year of publication. We have succeeded in our aim of creating a publishing format that stands out from all the others in the yachting world, one that’s inspired by passion, expertise, innovation and experience. On the pages of our magazine, and since September on our website at theoneyd.com, we’ve described the excitement of designing, building and buying a megayacht through the words of professional figures who contribute to the creation of such jewels – architects, designers, yachtbuilding yard managers and owners. And by posting content on digital platforms like Facebook and Instagram and sending out newsletters to our profiled database we’ve made THE ONE Yacht & Design into a distinctive communications system that’s full of information and entertainment. It’s all made possible by contributors and readers who have believed in us, and who by continuing to support us enable us to grow and develop our magazine’s content and distribution, so we can become the spokesperson for a market that’s been sending some very encouraging signals for some months now. Enjoy your reading!

[ AGAINST THE WIND ]

COME ON, YOUNG DESIGNERS: SHOW US WHAT YOU CAN DO! by Andrea Pezzini, CEO & Co-Founder of Floating Life

During the MYS, I looked around and muttered to

myself like the old man of the sea that I am: “I can’t see any real innovation here. The yachts are bigger than ever but they all look even more the same too. I can’t see anything that piques my interest. The last thing that really did stand out from the crowd and gave me a real shock was Norman Foster’s line which, whether you thought it beauty or beast, definitely broke with convention. After that I witnessed some very debatable designs, some big, others enormous… but nothing I could call a genuinely innovative concept”. As I am organising an intergenerational handover in my own group and took to social media a while back to send an open thank you letter to all the people who have helped me grow in my life, I thought I could do something. Hence my idea of gathering together projects with a bit of genuine innovation in them that were also buildable (something I can ascertain myself) to provide a space for people who may have ideas but can’t get them out there. I asked the publisher of The ONE Yacht and Design

to help me by putting at least one select project in to each magazine to showcase both the design and the person behind it. But that is not the end of the story..... I would also like to complete the model of the project that elicits most attention and/or has the most creative innovative content for the next MYS and then present it to the public and to clients with its own technical/sales brochure. I don’t know if this might be a leap forward in this slightly stale world of ours or not but at least it will be away of repaying to some extent the helping hand I was given many years ago by one of Italy’s and the world’s leading yard. Picchiotti, you will say! Its CEO believed in a 23-year-old: so I was promoted to what today they call the interior designer but once was simply the designer (and production manager) for onboard furnishings. So I would invite anyone who fulfils the abovementioned requirements to send me their projects (it doesn’t matter if they are not incredibly detailed) so that we can embark on this adventure together!

All, of course, to maintain my stance as the one always shouting against the wind!

[ FIVE QUESTIONS TO... ]

GIOVANNA VITELLI VICE PRESIDENT OF AZIMUT|BENETTI GROUP by Désirée Sormani

2019 has been a magical year for Azimut |Benetti: what was the high point emotionally though? It has been an extraordinary year and it is difficult for me to say exactly what the most emotional moment was as there were actually several different ones: the S6 on Times Square, the launch of the 3 Giga, the evening at Cap d’Antibes…. but I have to say I got most emotional during the speeches my father, who founded the Group, made during the client events. Hearing the pride in his voice was incredibly touching – and seeing the affection and admiration from the public was even more so. Deep down, a company’s success is down to the connection it manages to create with the people it interacts with! Lots of plaudits at the recent Shows. Plus three Benetti Oasis 40s sold in under a month. What is the biggest secret of that success? For several years what we have been doing has been marked out by product innovation in terms of new design, new materials, new technologies and new onboard space organisation solutions. Together with a focus on making yacht production processes increasingly sustainable. These awards are an endorsement and celebration of that broad-ranging commitment. I like to think that our skills are appreciated across the board regardless of the size of our boats: a sign of our ability to express the very best across all the market segments. The Group is ending the season with 900 million euros in revenues and 10% higher growth than last year. What do you see happening in 2020? The September boat shows produced some very interesting results: as of September 30 2019, the sales trends seem very positive with over 54% of our annual budget targets already met. Profitability is on the rise too. There is something of a boom in sales of two specific products: the Benetti Oasis 40m 14

launching in 2020, of which three were sold in September alone and two the previous month, and the Azimut 78 Fly, launched at Cannes of which eight have been sold. In both instances, the market rewarded new design trends and unprecedented use of spaces. You have thrown down the gauntlet to the German and Dutch yards with three astonishing over-100-metre launches in three months. How do intend to consolidate on that record achievement? Given that, on average, four gigayachts are delivered each year, we really did play a leading role in 2019, a testament to the yard’s great strength. The experience we built up by tackling the challenge of launching three yachts in 100 days, with all the skills that meant acquiring, makes us feel ready to take on the other players in the segment with our heads held high. Azimut|Benetti has been an astonishing innovative nautical company throughout its history. What about the future? Any hints? We have just started a particularly busy season. Lots of good news from Benetti, starting with B.YOND, a new category of expedition yacht with Siemens hybrid propulsion designed to reduce consumption throughout the craft’s entire lifespan. I should also mention the new Diamond 145, the B.NOW category with interiors by architect Roberto Baciocchi and exteriors by RWD, and the aforementioned success of Oasis, a partnership with the New York studio, Bonetti Kozerski. With regard to Azimut Yachts, we will be debuting the Verve 47 at the next Miami Show. A weekender designed for the American market that will also enchant a lot of Mediterranean owners too. Last but not least, in May, we will be presenting “The Art Yacht Project”, a collaboration with designer and artist Vincenzo De Cotiis, who worked on the new model in Azimut Yachts’ Magellano series, a 25m. A genuine work of art.

NICOLÒ FAVARETTO CEO RUBELLI

by Marta Bernasconi

What new possibilities are opening up in furnishing for the textile world? Rubelli operates in a variety of sectors from residential to hotels, naval, airport and yachting as well as historic palazzos, museums and theatres. Meticulous research has always been our by-word for combining peeress quality, beauty and functionality. In early 2019, we launched a large collection of innovative textiles that retain their artisanal look yet are hard-wearing, fire-resistant, washable and suitable for elegant indoor and outdoor residential and contract pro-jects, including nautical. You still use 18th century looms. What do you make on them and for whom? Alongside our 31 electronic jacquard looms at Cucciago, near Como, we still have four 18th cen-tury hand looms still in perfect working order. We use them for making soprarizzo silk velvet us-ing an ancient technique that produces a three-dimensional look. This very costly product is particularly popular with clients from France and the US in particular You work a lot abroad. Does being an Italian firm still make a difference? We are present on 85 markets with a variety of textiles and soft furnishings. 75% of our reve-nues come from exports. Europe, particularly the UK and France, the US, the Middle East and China are our most strategic markets. Our product’s added value is that it is 100% Made in Italy combined with the excellence of our materials and techniques. Tell us about your involvement in the nautical sector? It is growing fast and we are ready for it, thanks to Studio Rubelli, our broad range of Rubelli Casa products, and our ability to create custom solutions that go well beyond the classic defini-tion of textiles. What are the top-of-the-range products in your collections? Marco Piva’s Cinecittà collection and the Nava+Arosio Piano Collection on the furnishing and soft-furnishing front. Textile-wise, the new Rubelli 2019 collection that ranges from textiles made using ultra-luxe yarns, mostly silks, to high performance technical ones, which still retain Rubelli’s signature eclectic style. T

he Continental 80 is the first model in the new Continental range designed Team for Design by Enrico Gobbi for ISA Yachts. An architectural steel and aluminium yacht with nicely balanced volumes and streamlined lines, its exterior design features very spare, square windows that provide panoramic views to all the main interior areas. The yacht’s real signature, however, are the terraces amidships, particularly the one on the upper deck. Another wow feature is the infinity pool aft, a rectangular creation that takes up the entire beam and has a waterfall effect aft. This leaves plenty of space for large sun pads which turn this area of the main deck into an extension of the beach platform below, to which it connected by a pair of stairs. A black trapezoid marks out the stern hatch when closed and is a Continental line signature, also incorporating windows to draw natural light into the interior. The exterior styling is completed by two stylised smoke stacks to balance the yacht’s proportions. The upper deck is the owner’s deck complete with lounge and living areas aft as well as the master stateroom forward. The Continental 80 has seven staterooms for up to 12 passengers who will be cared for by 19 crew accomodated in 10 cabins. It also has a touch-and-go helipad with direct access to the master quarters to guarantee absolute privacy. www.teamfordesign.com

olumbus Yachts’ new flagship Dragon is hard yacht to do justice to on paper. Not so much when it comes to her dimensions – 80 metres in length and 13 in the beam, with a gross tonnage just shy of 2,300 – but the complexity of what can only be described as the recording-breaking and very challenging project that produced her. Let us just start with the fact that she was delivered in a mere 33 months. That is one very tight deadline but a deal-breaker for her focused who wanted a majestically beautiful yacht that could go anywhere and which he could take delivery of in the shortest possible time. While it is generally true that more haste means less speed, there are always honourable exceptions to that rule and Dragon is one, thanks to the skills of Sergio Cutolo and his Hydro Tec integrated design studio which tackled not just the yacht design but also the naval architecture and engineering side of the Dragon project. This fact alone slashed the timescale as Columbus was dealing with just one team. Cutolo in turn worked very closely with interior designer Francesco Guida, swiftly implementing all the changes required to incorporate the owner’s wishes. The yard has never been one to be put off by a challenge either and also has a longstanding relationship with both designers.

and leather legs can seat 14 guests. The most striking feature is, however, the windows: six of them in all, four of which are five metres by two. this allows light to flood in, creating a bright, comfortable vibe. Four guest staterooms and a large panoramic VIP are further forward. Five of Dragon’s six decks are connected by a round lift in the stairwell. The staircase doesn’t attempt to dominate, but it does have a charming design and backlit treads which lend it an airy lightness. The fourth deck is the owner’s private deck and includes a 110 sqm suite with huge windows that reveal 180 degree views of the private foredeck where a helicopter can touch down when the need arises. The Roman Travertine marble bathroom has a sauna, separate closet and vanity table. The bridge deck is, of course, home to the bridge and captain’s cabin, while forward there’s a 50 sqm Tecnogym-equipped fitness area flanked by a beauty and massage zone. The sun deck is the most spectacular area of the boat, dominated by a seven-metre swimming pool with a spectacular water wall-type waterfall separating it from the hydromassage area. The result is a hugely exclusive area with breath-taking views. A sublimely luxe terrace that towers 12 metres above the sea.

www.palumboyachts.com

The result: Dragon is a genuinely unique yacht clothed in refined, timeless lines. Spread over six decks, her design combines contemporary elements, classical proportions and peerless cleanness. A raked forward sheer hints at her vocation for long passage-making but her dimensions and innate elegance aside, Dragon exudes pure elegance rather than striving for the wow effect. But to return to those records for a moment, Dragon really does reveal a slew of remarkable features. Starting with her gigantic and spectacular beach club, which extends from 100 square metres to 200 sqm in the bat of an eye once all the fold-down platforms are opened. It includes relaxation, sunning and conversation areas with a bar, and, of course, a wellness area with sauna and hammam. Outdoor furnishings from the Tribù collection contrast nicely with the bright, fresh décor underscored by light teak on the walls and sole while three stunning backlit blue agate panels evoke the colours of the sea which also pop out in the soft furnishings which feature luxe Dedar fabrics. The beach club has its own independent existence even though it is connected to the cockpit on the main deck by two sumptuous side stairs. Dragon also features a profusion of opening side hatches that bring her fortunate guests even closer to the sea. Indeed, it’s very rare to see a yacht with so many apertures along her sides. An astonishing feat of engineering. The interiors have a luxurious feel but are also simple and sober, producing a warm, sophisticated and rather modern atmosphere. Light wood panelling with satin-finished bronze and gold inserts beautifully complement the natural colours of the bespoke furnishings too. The interiors are accessed from the main deck with the main saloon the by an imposing chandelier. The space is enormous and dominated by two large Provencal-style areas with sofas and armchairs. ragon has classic proportions with an elegant, timeless design and clean exteriors. Her profile is nicely balanced too despite her enormous volumes. She is the largest yacht we have ever designed. Her owner had very few stipulations but they were extremely specific: he wanted a raked bow, very flared sides and a taut line. The yacht was to be absolutely white and Mediterranean in vocation with an abundance of transparency, a large beach club, the swimming pool high up, and a generous number of al fresco spaces. This is a vessel with a lot of fold-out platforms that open onto the sea. The one forward of the tender garage is 10 metres, the side ones aft are 7-8 metres and the stern one is enormous. One choice I think is interesting was moving the tender garage amidships which meant we had to make some logical architectural choices such as putting the lift and the guest

46

embarkation platform near one to another. This meant we ended up with 15 metres of the boat’s side full of apertures. Dragon really is a boat with a lot of “holes” with advanced engineering solutions. Because we were doing the engineering, it also meant we could solve any issues immediately with the yard. Years ago, it wasn’t even possible for a yacht to open up on the water like that. From an architectural perspective, there is great balance between the interior and exterior spaces too. The aft cockpit connected with the saloon has low sides so that occupants can see the sea from anywhere inside it and when seated. An 80m would tend to detach people more from the sea so aboard a yacht of that size, thereefore it’s important to come up with strategies like that. On the main deck, the exterior cockpit sofa faces aft so that that area is never detached from nature underway either.

Dragon has six decks. Note how she tapers sea-ward aft to take her occupants closer to the sea. This is a direct result of Sergio Cutolo’s sailing experience and background. The owner wanted the pool to be on the top deck and in an exclusive, private area. He also wanted it to be very large. So we carved out a space inside the antenna and satellite mast. The result is intimate and cocoon-like. To comply with the owner’s request for a lot of transparency, we gave the living area enormous windows. The general plans gave us the idea for a gigantic saloon and we wanted to give it as much light as possible: in a 15-metre lengthwise stretch, we only put three window panes but two are five metres long and one is three-anda-half metres. Their dimensions are impressive. This is where engineering and architecture meld into one. The master stateroom too is actually a genuine apartment in its own right. Its windows are just 50-60 cm from the floor, creating a sense of continuity with the deck outside, a large terrace for the owners’ exclusive use.

he main theme was a modern take on the classic Provencal look. The challenge was to ensure that quite an exuberant style looked and felt simple. So we made the interiors more modern. We received some very precise input and worked very well with the owner’s entourage in an unusually informal atmosphere. The colours were to be light and ton-surton with a relaxed ambience throughout. So we opted for décor that linked all the various decks. The biggest challenge was doing it all in the very short time scale requested by the owner. It was a lot of work but with such clear ideas, we were able to move very fast. Our excellent relationship with Hydro Tec was pivotal: the interior and exterior designs basically took shape at the same time. We worked together on everything the owner wanted in terms of general plans to satisfy his requests and design requirements. We made great use of the large windows in the living area: they bring a bright, lightness to the overall picture and emphasise the soft lighting throughout that gives the whole project a sense of great airiness. We also made full use of any apertures in the cabins: by turning the beds towards the sea, for instance. Large rugs are used throughout the entire yacht and were bespoke-made for every space using ancient techniques and to our designs (the yacht was presented to the public at the Monaco Yacht Show without them). Dragon is very homogenous – there are no wow effects. Aside from the beach area which has three backlit blue agate panels that inject real life into the space. The bulkheads are matt lacquered to add to the simplicity of the décor which uses a small selection of carefully selected materials: oak, Travertine marble, and brushed bronze and gold edging. All the furnishings were bespoke-designed apart from a few pieces such as the Giorgetti dining table, two Frau chairs in the hair styling area and the Tribù outdoor furnishings. This lent the project, simple though it was, greater exclusivity. The fabrics are by Dedar. Dragon is my most important achievement. An excellent starting point, an opportunity that has us hoping we can continue on down this path.

the two together. It is an idea we want to continue to use. It was a huge opportunity for the yard because there were plenty of challenges involved: lots of fold-out platforms, big heavy windows (each one weighed 200 kg). So we had to really stretch ourselves in terms of investment and find the right suppliers who were used to working on cruise and commercial vessels. They are part of Palumbo Yachts portfolio of contacts. I think one of Dragon’s strong points is the impression of solidity and construction quality you get the minute you step aboard. She is our ambassador. We have demonstrated that it is now possible to build a large yacht in a short time and that puts us into a whole new dimension. Having already proved it on the ground so to speak, we can take on the responsibility of delivering yachts in very tight times. That is a risk that not everyone is ready to run. I think that we have launched ourselves into a new era and have joined the ranks of the big yacht builders in the process. We will be continuing to increase the size of our craft. We won’t venture into the gigantic lengths you see in Northern Europe but I think it will be easy for us to get to over 80 metres. Dragon isn’t just a launch pad but an across-the-board leg-up for all our output.

Ph. Alberto Cocchi

The owner was already known to the yard. He arrived at the right moment because we had already started building the hull on spec and we had no problem adapting the project to the owner’s tastes. In terms of the design we suggested people we knew would be capable of interpreting the owner’s wishes very successfully and the client followed our advice. The owner wanted a big yacht and he wanted it fast. On average you have to wait four years for a boat this size but he didn’t want to do that. That was the make or break stipulation that got the contract signed. His other wishes were more or less aesthetic and functional: he wanted an owner’s deck, a helicopter landing pad, Provencal-style interiors and the tenders kept out of sight. Building a boat of these dimensions in just over two years was a real challenge. A record we achieved in part thanks to our collaboration with the integrated architecture studio Hydro Tec in which the exterior designer, naval architect and engineer are all one and the same. Then we built up a harmonious relationship with the interior designer and with the owner’s entire entourage. The most complex thing was managing the production phase. To keep that as short as possible we decided to build the hull and superstructure at the same time and then put

Unfortunately, in the eyes of both public and critics alike, it was the wrong Bond behind the wheel of the wrong Aston Martin. The Bond in question was George Lazenby whose performance was overshadowed by the iconic Sean Connery. The car was a DBS coupé, bulkier than its predecessor, the utterly timeless DB5 coupé. It was no coincidence that it was the first and last appearance of both in the blockbuster series. The Bond film celebrates its half-century anniversary in 2019, having hit the cinemas on December 18 1969, 50 years during which things have changed for both the film and the DBS coupé with the car in particular becoming one of the most sought-after classic GTs of our time. Now, to celebrate the film’s 50th anniversary and their model’s cameo, the boffins at Aston Martin’s HQ in Gaydon have come up with a real gem: a special limited edition of 50 of the DBS Superleggera, the first of which will be delivered to their owners at the end of this year. An unexpected homage but not a complete first as it was preceded by the special “DB9 GT Bond Edition” and the “Goldfinger DB5 Continuation” unveiled in 2015 and 2018 respectively. Because James Bond always guarantees a hit and his

THE SEA AT YOUR FINGER TIPS by Désirée Sormani 64

Nauta Design is a Milan-based studio founded in 1995 by Mario Pedol (left) and Massimo Gino. It was an offshoot of Nauta Yacht, a brand that has been working right across the board in the nautical industry since 1985. It started out in building sailing yachts but also offers brokerage services. Nauta Design’s drawing boards have produced spectacular sailers of the likes of the magnificent Baltics My Song and Nikata, and the Lßrssen Azzam, which, at 180 metres, is the world’s largest private yacht

hey’ve done it all from the world’s largest private yacht to elegant, performance sailers, tenders, chase boats and imposing explorers capable of venturing to the world’s most remote regions. And they’ve worked with both leading international yards and private clients of all

kinds from the ultra-competitive to the most laid back. Nauta Design is one of the most eclectic studios on the international design scene, a standard-bearer for Italian creativity that has been making the sailing dreams of well-heeled owners come true for over three decades. All of its sailing yachts have their own character, personality and signature: an unmistakeable elegance always matched by a certain athleticism. Ten years or so ago, the studio also began designing motoryachts, bringing a unique sensibility to the area perhaps influenced in no small measure by its sailing background. Now, having produced thousands of metres of boats of all kinds and sizes, it feels only natural to ask whether its team feels most comfortable designing motor or sailing craft. “Both - in terms of experience, ability and creativity,” says Nauta Design president Mario Pedol. “But it doesn’t take any huge effort sailing-wise because we have such a well-established reputation. In the motor arena, we are competing with the big design names that only work in that segment and have a solid position on that market. Let’s just say that that is our challenge right now. We are involved in a lot of tender competitions and we do actually win some. But the sailing world is part of our DNA. We are almost all sailors ourselves anyway”. He goes on to say: “You can see that in our motor work too as we pour all our skills and megayachtrelevant styling exercises into it. For instance, we know that what makes people happiest is contact with the sea and nature. So that is our mantra”. This is something the studio has been focusing on since 2007, the year it presented the Nauta Project Light 180m, one of the first yachts centred around lightness, transparency and harmony with nature. A boat in which the interconnection between interior and exterior spaces – currently so on trend in megayachts – made its first appearance. But there were precursors even to that. “We like to make that contact felt even inside, by creating very simple spaces that are full of atmosphere – very much like a home,” says Pedol. Those concepts have become even more clearly defined in the new 78m Slipstream. Spread over

66

The 78m Slipstream is clothed in clean lines that are raked in certain areas to lower her proportions and bring occupants closer to the sea. Her beach area is a circular indooroutdoor affair, thanks to open-out platforms. A large six-metre pool on the swim platform is another new addition. the leading international yards on craft of all kinds

Aesthetics and function are cleverly balanced to reflect Nauta Design’s philosophy. This is true in particular of the upper deck, which is also the master deck with a private area forward. Indeed, the suite goes well beyond a mere cabin to become a refuge where owners can fully relax and enjoy themselves and the space. “Another example is the saloon on the main deck which has large vertical windows from which guests can enjoy views of the outside world. Most interesting of all though is the beach area. It is not just big but also completely open, a real sea platform that becomes even larger when the side hatches are opened, creating a circular indoor-outdoor route and completely immersing users in nature. That is why we call it the ‘island’, in fact,” continues Pedol. “Another original feature is the ‘Nemo Room’, a lower area of the beach club with underwater views providing a tantalising glimpse of the undersea world. Skylights alternate with artificial lighting to create a feeling a great light throughout and there is literally glass everywhere. Plus lots of quiet corners, sunken areas very much like the cockpits on sailing yachts. These feel cosy and private, once again taking the centre of gravity of life aboard back to sea level. Which is the whole point of the design, of course”. www.nautadesign.it

Collaborating with the Ferretti Group Strategic Product Committee and Engineering Department was essential to helping us to tackle the major challenge of combining the new elements we were asked to introduce with the successful design, functionality and technical features the brand is renowned for. Continuity was important in restyling the range, and so certain distinctive characteristics from previous successful models were enhanced and combined with new recurring design motifs. The overall design focused on enhancing contact with the sea and attempting to break down the boundaries between the exterior and interior. Another noteworthy fact is that the new technical solutions and the new overall exterior look are so inextricably linked. Indeed, they are like different parts of a one-piece architectural mosaic. We also incorporated styling cues from other industries. These include the automotive and residential architecture sectors, but we also conducted in-depth research to bring out shapes and volumes. We wanted to make the profile appear sleeker and more powerful. We achieved this by creating one long window on the main and lower decks. The strong lines run from bow to stern, adding life to the curves and carved-out sections, soft and sporty lines, the alternating materials and colours of the structural materials and dark-tinted windows. Particular attention was also paid to the size of alfresco areas, a Custom Line signature, which in this instance are all interconnected and can be sheltered by bimini tops or canopies.

he brief was for a homey yet elegant interior. This is in line with the key to the whole design, i.e. breaking down the boundaries between exterior and interior, the interior is open to the outside. The dÊcor choices reflect the most up-to-date lifestyle and were inspired by luxury residential furnishing designs. We focused on the colours and the finishes of the materials we used – flamed sanded wood for the floor, polished ebony for the furniture along the bulwarks, bronze Travertino marble for the bathrooms, transparent bronzed glass for the wardrobe exterior, hard leather and fabrics to make it contemporary and to achieve the desired result. The combination of different colours is an important part of the onboard design. Colours range from bright hues to darker touches, creating a balanced sequence which starts from cream for the sofas in the living ranging all the way to clay for the leather of the headboard in the master’s, light grey for the polished ceiling of the dining area, bronze for the coffee table tops in the living, the brown hues of the leather used for the steps stairway, walls and ceiling in the lobby up to black for the leather of the wheelhouse and the polished ebony of the furniture. The metal details and the polished finishes of the ceilings make the interior even brighter, just like the bronze finishes of the lamps by Contardi. The layout offers a full-beam master suite on the main deck with a fold-out balcony on the starboard side. Four cabins on the lower deck, all en suite, provide accommodation for guests, with two VIPs aft featuring a fabulous bed arrangement in front of the huge side windows. The two twins forward each have a Pullman berth.

When at anchor, the transom turns into a large beach area that connects to both the main and sun decks. A Williams DieselJet505 and a wet bike are stowed in the garage. Stretching 32.82 metres in length and 7.3 in the beam, the Custom Line 106’ is powered by a pair of 2,217 mhp MTU 16V 2000 M86 engines that give it a cruising speed of 20 knots and peaks of 23

n 2016 Custom Line launched a new era for its planing line with Francesco Paszkowski Design, who worked with the Strategic Product Committee and Engineering Department to create the first in the series, the Custom Line 120’. The arrival of the Custom Line 106’ is simply the natural evolution of this new planing line. It is a yacht with a functional design, the perfect melding of aesthetics and innovation, and delivers the ultimate in terms of comfort, space, safety and navigability. It is designed so that its entire interior fit-out and decorative element are completely personalisable to suit the owner’s tastes and requirements. It’s sporty because its dynamic, rational lines are the signatures of the new generation Custom Line planing series. Thanks to an innovative planing hull, performances are superb and fuel consumption low to the extent that it is best-in-class in its category. The most distinctive spaces aboard include the 36 sqm al fresco space forward, an area divided into three separate and independent sections. Another element is the balcony which in the first version is in the master suite – it folds out over the sea. Interesting from a technological as well as an aesthetic point of view is the evolved version of the patented DMT - Dual Mode Transom: two sliding doors that cover the stairs underway for an absolutely clean look. When the yacht is at a standstill, they slide into the hatch to allow guests go up. Lastly, the entertainment system was created in partnership C.N.Sat. It is installed in the main deck saloon and can be controlled via iPad, which completely replaces the remote controls for the various devices. This feature can be extended to all the yacht’s spaces and can also be integrated with the owner’s personal devices.

Age”. Video art began to make its mark on the art scene and other proponents were emerging at the same time. With characteristic vision the MoMA began to acquire video works as early as the late 1970s, guided by the intuition of curator Barbara London. The collection now boasts over 1,600 video works. Over the years this artistic field has experienced rapid development, riding the wave of technological advances. Take, for example, the leap from the cathode ray tube, the old-style TV, to liquid crystal displays and today’s LED technology. At the MoMA all the old formats have been digitalised, a shift that has provided a great deal of work for media conservators. One of the pioneers of this cutting-edge vision of the nature of art is Italian artist Fabrizio Plessi. Born in 1940, he has worked since 1968 with installations, films and videotape. His light sculptures, often three-dimensional and created using advanced technology, are far removed from pure art. The elements of fire and water are recurring themes in Plessi’s work, on board the Admiral 54-metre yacht Sea Force One, for example. His works have an intense emotional impact, like those by the famous American artist Bill Viola, eleven years younger, which combine sound and images in movement. His works have played a key role in establishing video as a contemporary art form (Marina Abramovic, famous for her performance art, has worked with Viola). Many artists

A designer with a unique flair for turning the forms and textures of shells, stones, mother of pearl into stunning tableware collections that create a very special dining atmosphere by Marta Bernasconi

Inspired by the act of savouring the taste of an oyster, the Indulge collection is made from Limoge porcelain. Its innovative forms offer a new way of tasting food based on a concept that combines luxury and sensuality

lthough born and raised in the French Pyrenees, Sarah-Linda Forrer has her creative headquarters in Amsterdam. It is from there that she has made name for herself for her charmingly unique style which is solidly influenced by nature. The sea in particular is a huge creative touchstone as she draws on it for her forms, colours and materials. Some of Forrer’s collections are intensely personal. The delicately organic shapes of the Indulge collection are fashioned out of Limoges porcelain to create oyster-shaped dishes that very elegantly rewrite the rules of eating. These stylishly sensual pieces are available in unglazed matt white or with a choice of different glazes. What sets Forrer’s work apart is that it can be personalised too. The same innovative creativity underpins the Stone Spoons line of eating utensils which are made from alabaster and stone and carved to follow the natural structure of the material. The result is that each piece is unique with

t is easy to think that all great chefs were born virtually in the kitchen. But this was far from the case for Trieste-native Antonia

Klugmann, the creative force behind L’Argine a Vencò, her beautiful restaurant nestling in the lush surrounds of the Province of Gorzia.

A place she has retreated to concentrate solely on her own work after her stint as a Masterchef Italia judge. “Looking back, I suppose that there were clues in my childhood – I used to make tasting menus for my mother out of play dough! But it was only when I was 21 I began to think about the possibility of becoming a professional cook. I was studying law in Milan, my parents were divorcing and I had broken up with my then-boyfriend. When I started to really reflect on it, I realised that my happiest times were in the kitchen and that I wanted a job that would let me express my creativity”. Klugmann uses cooking as a way of interpreting the local area and the reality of life there. Place and history are sources of constant inspiration. And that is how it has been for all the restaurants she has worked in: from her first near Udine to Venice and now Vencò. Her very personal approach to food resulted in her developing a style all of her own. “When I began my career, working in restaurants wasn’t as fashionable as it is now. I started out late compared to many of my colleagues and my training was interrupted by a nasty car accident too. So I didn’t really have a mentor as such. But I instantly fell in love with some of the chefs I read about in cooking magazines and they showed me that cooking could be complex, interesting and marvellous. They include Ferran Adrià, Pascal Barbot and René Redzepi. Then lots of Italian chefs like Gualtiero Marchesi, Fulvio Pierangelini, Massimo Bottura, Niko Romito and Piergiorgio Parini”. L’Argine a Vencò is a magical place nestling in lush green nature. The location was chosen very deliberately. “The beauty we are surrounded by is a constant source of inspiration. ith regard to the exterior design development of the 90R, I wrote to Ocean Alexander in the winter of 2017 expressing my opinion that we needed to depart from their current styling with this new project and that we should create something innovative and ground-breaking. Richard Allender, the president of Ocean Alexander Yachts, was in full agreement with this approach and, on that basis, I started sketching out some styling concepts and eventually we arrived at the design which has now been built. The main feature of the 90R exterior design is how we have been able to incorporate a large volume into a very stylish, sleek profile. This was achieved, in large part, by the design of the sweeping fashion board which creates accelerated visual movement, giving the yacht a very dynamic profile. In terms of the elements that make this yacht unique, I would have to say the way her sweeping fashion board blends into the upper deck hard top and dynamic window shapes. This is a yacht with volumes. I particularly like the sky lounge which is absolutely oversized for a craft of this category. I am especially fond of the more European version with teak flooring, a finish that lends the yacht great character.

Interior Designer Evan K. Marshall

e wanted to bring a lot of light into this 27m and to create a seamless connection between the interiors and exteriors. I have been sailing since I was a child and remember boats in the 1970s all too well: they were dark with tiny windows and you always felt you were camping. Now owners want the same lifestyle as they have in their own homes so we worked a lot on light, thanks to the enormous windows that today’s technology allows you to put into yachts. The interiors are contemporary and comfortable. We used relaxing finishes - not so much high glossing, for example. We also focused on social areas which allow owners to enjoy life on the water to the fullest with family and friends. This is a solid, practical yacht that is very seaworthy and absolutely reflects the yard’s reputation: aside from its styling and design, it is first and foremost a craft that has to be able to tackle even tough weather conditions. The furnishings and accessories were designed by us for the most part too. They had to be separated from the outboard perimeter so as not to block the windows and, as a result, we had to come up with a freestanding “floating” furniture style. This new approach is especially evident in the main saloon with the floating wet bar and sideboard and the freestanding sofas, all of which maximise the views out of the full height windows in this space. In the master stateroom, we applied the same approach with freestanding lounge chairs which can rotate 360° so you can sit facing out towards the glorious views of the sea or inboard, looking at the spacious stateroom. The freestanding desk-cum-vanity allows the large window on the starboard side to be free from a massive piece of furniture blocking most of it. We selected a combination of oak and ebony finishes for the bathrooms and the galley, as well as some lacquer with flooring in wood and Cambria Stone which guarantees extreme consistency.

O

cean Alexander’s long history began 41 years ago. We have yards in Taiwan and Florida. In the former we build our larger yachts and our smaller ones in the latter. Around 90% of our output is for the American market and, to continue to grow, we focused on internationalising the brand. As our yachts are very American-oriented, we began developing new designs three years ago with Evan Marshall. The way people use their boats is very different: in the United States, they really clock up the miles. They go to Alaska, to the Bahamas, they stay out at sea for a month at a time. But that’s not how it is in Europe. They are more conservative in America – style is important there but not as much as in Europe, where it’s critical. Our aim is not to become a European brand – we want to hang on to our American DNA but we want to distil it in such a way that it will also go down well in Europe. Our strength is that we are bringing a different kind of

106

product to the mix. This 27m semicustom was developed with two different interior layouts and decors to satisfy owners with different tastes and lifestyles. But what doesn’t change is the way we build the craft. Ocean Alexander is renowned for engineering that is very solid and focused on having back-up systems. The 90R is contemporary in style and has a huge amount of glass, as well as the safe, solid mentality of an explorer with a large range and lots of storage. It is important to us that even if you aren’t covering great distances, you know that you have a boat that can do so. Today’s owners are looking to boats that are solid…..like SUVs. The interior and exterior spaces aboard this yard are beautifully interconnected and multifunctional. They are also significantly larger than is normally the case for a craft of this size. Essentially, this is a bigger boat in a smaller package.

Massimo Formenton founded their studio in Padua (North of Italy) in 1990 but also opened an office in Milan in 2004. Their work spans museum, commercial, managerial and residential spaces but they have a particular vocation for international interior and retail design. When we met with Aldo Parisotto to discuss the broad scope of the duo’s work and their multifaceted personalities, he also revealed a surprising connection to the sea and yacht design. “I spent my summers at the sea when I was growing up and I always liked boats from when I got my first inflatable. When I was 18, I got my nautical licence – a dream come true,” begins Parisotto, who has holidayed at the sea every year since he graduated. “I bought my first sailing boat in 1999 and started competing in it. Now I’m completely addicted. I compete in a 75’ Mylius mini-maxi, an aggressive racer that has all the comfort of a superyacht when cruising… but I might not stop there…” Design-wise, Parisotto chose to retain the DNA of the Mylius boat penned by Alberto Simeone, simply making some modifications to the interiors such as the use of smoked eucalyptus, mahogany and carbon look finishes to complement the model’s sporty vocation. His great love of sailing combined with his profession as a designer marked out Parisotto’s destiny and thus that of the studio which has also ventured into yacht interior design. “We started out with Grand Soleil, with some consultancy work on personalising a 37, a 46 (which I also owned) and a Truthfully, yacht design demands a lot of specialist expertise. margin of error and it is difficult to really invent anything new. But our across-the-board, multidisciplinary design approach involves the kind of mentality that is eager to experiment and innovate,” he reveals. There is one issue on which Parisotto refuses to budge, however: he is adamant that yacht designers have to have seafaring experience. Ergonomics and safety are both vital factors and anyone that doesn’t know what sailing or offshore racing involves, for example, can run the risk of making errors with potentially serious consequences. “Some people design nautical interiors with sharp angles without thinking about the fact that in upwind sailing, the boat heels sharply and safety is pivotal. From a formal point of view, I am a purist and I bring meticulous attention to detail and a very spare kind of language to my design work. Aboard, I use curved lines because I have to but I always keep things pared back. Decorative elements and the ornate are not my thing. Aspirationally, my touchstone would be the refined, unostentatious sobriety of Hermès,” Parisotto says. Parisotto and Formenton have been involved in retail fashion and design since 1995 because they have been so quick to interpret the radical changes that have swept the industry over the last 25 years. “These days, brands change their commercial format every four years. They talk out emotions, they give their customers an experience: simply showcasing a product is no longer the most important thing. You need to communicate the brand values, tell a story in an involving way and we love doing that with emotive installations”. An approach that demands rigour and purity but also experimentation and emotion. Mind and heart. The art of design and the craft of sailing are one and the same for Parisotto+Formenton in other words. 112

The windward rudder lifts while the leeward one dips progressively, simultaneously becoming more perpendicular and more efficient. The deck plan is likewise a masterpiece of clean, uncluttered ergonomics, thanks to the fact that all the sail controls are clustered around the steering position and that the working area is separate from the living area amidships which is covered by a large bimini and equipped with two tables. The overall interior layout sees the saloon and engine room amidships for optimal weight distribution and there is also a double VIP cabin and two twin guests. Owners also have a choice of putting the master suite forward or aft. Kinina’s owner chose the Owner Forward option. The result is a cabin 4.5m long with a large island bed, closets and a head with separate shower. As she has a semi-raised saloon, Kinina also treats her guests to extraordinary sweeping views from her 6m-wide saloon, thanks to the coachroof design and large windows that draw spectacular amounts of natural light into the interior. inina is a family cruiser with the typical volumes of a 90’. She’s very spacious but, like all Swans, also high performance. The hull lines are more modern than in the past: a broader stern above the waterline, twin rudders and the keel design make the boat faster, safer and easier to control and thus more comfortable at sea. Optionals include a retractable telescopic keel, a deep fixed keel and a medium-draught fixed keel which have the same stability, rudder configuration and standard sail plan. The hull sections were designed to retain their symmetry at different heel angles with an optimal balance between performance and sea conditions. Her consistently wide stern section aids stability and affords superb comfort... The mix of these different qualities delivers maximum performance in extreme safety, all wrapped up in a package of rare beauty and elegance. We also worked very closely with Maestro Frers on the interiors and even made a 1:1 scale model to check the ergonomics and composition of the spaces. But then walking through mock-ups is all part of the Swan experience! he owner, an expert sailor, had a very clear idea of what he wanted: a boat with a large saloon, two guest cabins aft and the master forward (Kinina is the OF - Owner Forward version), capable of long distance sailing and also very comfortable. With regard to styling, I took a practical approach that resulted in a sober look with simple, easy to use, natural materials. More specifically, we opted for hard-wearing, high performance fabrics and leathers that were, most importantly of all, easy to clean. Given that she is a blue water yacht designed for long distance cruising, Kinina offers large social areas that are both luxurious and safe. The stern is dedicated to the crew area and the two twin guest cabins, while the bow is dedicated to the full-beam master

suite (with desk, bathroom, closets and large island bed) and the VIP cabin. The main joinery wood is quarter-cut European oak with a hand-rubbed satin finish. It has a lovely straight vertical grain that creates typically clean, understated Swan aesthetic. The beauty of oak is that it looks wonderful when paired with different materials and colours. The laminate wood finishes on the furnishings also work as robust grab points underway, while folding chairs can be securely affixed to the floor at sea. The coffee table top in the saloon rotates to reveal poufs and a tray on the other side. Kinina’s owner opted for a classic colour palette of soft, light hues to highlight the colour and elegance of the wood. The floor is teak with light oak strips: this is a new combination for us

and we loved it because it is innovative but never invasive. All the onboard furnishings are fixed and designed and built by Nautor. The bathroom and kitchen tops are made from Corian with Hans Grohe fittings, the dining chairs

are by Manutti. Ultraleather Brisa is used for the handrail and table details, while Sunbrella fabrics were applied to the upholstery, sofas and other seating. The downlights are by John Cullen, bed linen by Pratesi and white goods by Miele.

The main wood selected for the interiors is quarter-cut European oak with a handrubbed satin finish. The floors alternate teak and oak, a first for Swan to bring movement to the interiors and prevent a sense of monotony setting in. The owner asked for absolutely uniform styling – which is understated and functional – in both the guest areas and the crew mess (below)

he Swan 78 is the result of our idea of differentiating our product to meet the needs of our owners and underpins the brand strategy of dividing the range into three product lines: Club Swan Yachts for racing owners and Swan Yachts and Maxi Swan Division for more cruiser-oriented souls. After carefully analysing the market, we came to the conclusion we should develop a different design that combined the traditional performance of a Swan with modern lines that deliver comfort and very ample volumes. We are targeting owners for whom performance, quality and technology, but also comfort and style, are fundamental factors in choosing a boat. The aim is to offer the right craft to our clients who want to go up in size and gradually get into the maxi world. The Swan 78 gives the opportunity to approach the superyacht segment with a 24m boat that offers some of the typical features of custom and semi-customs: the space and volumes of larger yachts and the opportunity to personalise their boat in terms of layout (with the possibility of having the master cabin forward or aft) and interior design by choosing woods and fabrics. Plus, as is the case with all Swans, the 78 had to be a powerhouse of comfort, safety and performance to sail all the world’s seas while simultaneously being able give its owner a fun time in competition. The four examples launched so far - and the sixth in build - prove that we were right on the money in that regard! Don’t forget that like all Swans, the 78’ got a thorough 4,000 nm shakedown sailing from the Baltic to the Mediterranean… Currently our biggest markets are Northern Europe and the Mediterranean but we are returning to the US with our smaller boats quite confident that our American owners will want to grow with us. The same applies to Asia where interest in boats is starting to move, particularly with the new generations and the upgrading of dedicated facilities.

A strong common thread links Perini’s first motoryacht with its larger sailing siblings. Part tender, part chase boat, part explorer, the new Eco-Tender also reveals a high-tech heart by Fabio Petrone

Tacoli’s eloquent description of the first Perini Navi-branded motoryacht and the first ever planing motoryacht to be produced by the Viareggio shipyard. A project that came into being because the tech-savvy owners of a Perini 50m sailer wanted a tender more comfortable than a regular RIB that would allow them explore coastal regions and shallow waters while their ketch was anchored further out due to her deep draft. Because they are also avid nature lovers, they also wanted to be able to venture into protected marine areas at speeds of six to seven knots and that meant zero-emissions navigation. Last but not least, they specified a boat that would mirror the elegant lines, quality and comfort of the mother vessel, be independent and also allow them to host more guests. In short, their lovely new tender was to be a sort of extension of the ketch. Perini Navi took these instructions onboard with its usual impeccable

motoryacht projects you’ve presented, partly confirms this, but in the light of what you’re saying sail yachts remain central to the Perini’s operations? It couldn’t really be otherwise, because Perini has almost always been the undisputed leader in sail megayacht construction. The founder, Fabio Perini, gave his craft a well-defined identity. Not only luxury objects, they were also extremely technological, cutting-edge yachts. We’ve no intention of abandoning this heritage – in fact, we want to strengthen it. We’ve extended our motoryacht offer, but we’ve also developed new sail yachts that don’t deny the past but present concepts that have obviously been given a makeover to reflect current ideas, interpreted using the most up-to-date technology but also in line with the tastes and requirements of today’s owners. The most important news is that we’ll soon be seeing a new Perini sail yacht with the rig that made the Maltese Falcon an iconic craft. The 92-metre I talked about is the largest in a line of five designs that

134

starts from a 56-metre and goes on to a 64, 72 and 80-metre, called Giovanni Malgarini

the Perini Navi Falcon Rig. Under the leadership of Franco Romani, our designers succeeded in balancing the large volumes of the flagship (the yacht is laid out over four decks - ed) with a linear design that retains the classic Perini style elements, so it’s unmistakeable. This is reinforced by the adoption of this particular rig with carbon masts, not three as on the Maltese Falcon but two, and they can carry a sail area of 2,400 square metres. Compared to the 2006 model the system has become even more efficient, from the point of view of both aerodynamics and monitoring and automated rigging management. The rigging’s all hidden, there are no lines on the deck, no line or cable in sight. Another piece of news that emerged at the MYS 2019 is your collaboration with French designer Ora Ito. He’s a true creative, and until his encounter with Perini he’d never had anything to do with yachts, so he could provide an unbiased interpretation of iconic designs like the Perini 56 m, our most successful model. The result is the Perini Navi/Ora Ito “capsule”, a concept that provides food for thought, an unusual reading that that’s bound to provide some excellent ideas.

WE THINK THIS FALCON RIG IS BOTH THE PRESENT AND FUTURE FOR LARGE SAIL YACHTS

xploring the potential of a material as timelessly classic as wood and using it to create genuinely innovative designs are the two things that drive Listone Giordano,

which has held the patent for its Multilayer flooring since 1984. The latter delivers the ultimate in a beautiful wood finish but is also exceptionally hard-wearing and superbly constructed. Working hand-in-glove the Sanlorenzo yard and American studio Marty Lowe, Listone Giordano created the interiors of the luxury yacht built at the Ligurian yard. The latter has large open plan spaces with enormous windows that not only draw natural light inwards but also instigate a dialogue with the horizon beyond. This spatial design concept inspired the Listone Giordano team to create a genuinely new custom design. The brand’s deputy president Andrea Margaritelli explains: “We thought about trimming the surfaces of the interior spaces which essentially flow as an open-plan area from stem to stern, with a reinterpretation of the whole idea of geometric surfaces. This meant that the wood wasn’t just being used as the natural material par excellence but also brought elegance and decorative potential into the equation without taking from

Aesthetically, its geometric trapezoidal pattern also creates a new take on the classic rectangular floor board concept”. THE PLACE

The Monaco Yacht Show is definitely the most eagerlyawaited event of the year. For four days, the Principality turns into the world capital of yachting as it hosts the most beautiful craft of the year and reveals the leading trends by Désirée Sormani

“W

entertaining and instructive plunge into the world of superyachting, while serving the interests of the industry. In other words, to encourage encounters between final clients and the best players in the market.” The words of Monaco Yacht Show General Manager Gaëlle Tallarida proved prophetic indeed. The feedback from exhibitors on the 29th MYS (25 to 28 September) is more than positive with the market powering ahead and the organisers reporting a larger number of private visitors to Monaco’s Port Hercule this year, the majority being potential clients from the US, Russia, Britain, China and India. There is no doubt that the MYS is the luxury yachting world’s most important event of the year. This is the place to be. Its four days bring announcements of new joint ventures and the unveiling of stunning superyacht projects and technologies, all with glorious Monte-Carlo acting as a glittering backdrop. anyone in the yachting world is there. 2019’s fleet was the most impressive ever to be presented and spanned more than 125 superyachts with an estimated total value of around 4 billion. A massive 42 were making their world debuts. Around 40% (50) of the total were built by Italian shipyards. Add in the craft on the brokerage and charter listings and that rises to 46 %. In other words, nearly every second boat at the show was Italian. Many non-Italian yards also turn to Italian designers for their exterior lines and interiors too, of course. There were 14 megayachts of over 70 metres too, including two over 100m: the 111m Tis by Lürssen and the 106m Amadea brought along by Imperial Yachts. On the eve of the MYS, four of the year’s top designs were honoured at the 6th Monaco Yacht Show Superyacht Awards ceremony. Attila (64m, Sanlorenzo) won the MYS/RINA Award for her design, which complies with the environmental standards established by RINA. Tis, the brand-new 111m from Lürssen, took

YOURSELF!

Gabriele Teruzzi’s Elle.D is more than just a creative milestone for the young designer - her 108 sqm sun deck, 79 sqm beach club and stunning sky lounge turn yachting into the immersive experience he feels the new generation of clients is demanding

A

t first sight, the 42m navetta Elle.D exudes the air of a luxurious and very private residence. But in reality, she is the first milestone on Gabriele

Teruzzi’s path to becoming a strong, independent voice in yacht design. “The designer’s role is to forge an experience out of thin air,” says the rising talent who grabbed the attention of the international media attention with the radical 150m Shaddai concept in 2016. A graduate of Turin’s prestigious Istituto Europeo, Teruzzi also spent five years as one of A.M. Yacht Design of Trieste’s leading collaborators working on a wide array of prestige craft for the likes of Mangusta, Fairline, Azimut and Dominator. In 2018, however, he felt the time had come to open his own studio and has since worked with industry giants Lürssen and Fincantieri with Mauro Parodi, Senior VP Fincantieri Yachts, describing him as “a fresh talent.” The aforementioned Elle.D feels very much like a celebration of Teruzzi’s new creative voyage and his declared ambition to set “a new benchmark for grasping

Elle.D’s vocation for immersing her guests in the surrounding environment is clear from these shots of her generous exteriors, interiors and expansive windows. Of particular note: the centrepiece pool with waterfall, lavish sun pads, and sun deck. Also: Gabriele Teruzzi at work

STAR IN THE

MAKING

by Fabio Petrone

Cooler than cool: Nerea Yacht has chosen a runabout as its debut model. Sculpted lines, lots of teak and blistering performance are the bywords with this sublimely chic, elegant superyacht tender. The NY24 comes from the pens of Alessio Battistini and Davide Bernardini

D

ario Messina drew on his 20 years of yachting industry experience to launch the Nerea Yacht brand which answers the call from clients demanding craft that are both

beautiful and beautifully crafted, in signature Made In Italy style, as well as brimming with personality and customisable features. For his debut he has selected that most iconic of all motorboats, the runabout. The NY24 ticks all the right boxes historically with a signature flared, decked bow and a large cockpit where guests can enjoy that matchless combination of sun and speed. Runabouts are making a massive comeback as tenders to large yachts these days and are looking as if they might soon become as popular as they once were in the glory days of the 50s and 60s. Stretching 7.35 metres in length and 2.5 in the beam, the NY24 has a vee-hull with a 18.5° deadrise which not only guarantees very nippy speeds but can cope with rough seas as it unleashes the full power of its 300 hp Volvo Penta D4 diesel engine coupled with a Duo-Prop stern drive. The pens behind the NY24 are Alessio Battistini and Davide Bernardini of ideaeITALIA, who have produced a boat with an unusual raked sheer line that creates a sense of dynamism underscored by the lines that sculpt flanks and surfaces into which the large tinted window that draws light into the cabin, has been set.

154

To keep the bow lines pure, the anchor hides away and is deployed and retracted using a special electromechanical system. The NY24 is powered by a 300 hp Volvo Penta D4 diesel

155

[ TENDER ]

An oversize cockpit and a decked bow are two of the classic runabout signatures that appear. The design of the stern is original with the stepped transom/swim platform proving easy access to the sea

The very heart of the NY24 is, however, its generous central cockpit where the dinette can convert to a further sun pad in addition to the aft one. The NY24’s bow, on the other hand, is wonderfully pure and clean. The anchor is stowed in an anchor locker and only appears when activated from the steering position – the kind of electromechanical system not normally found on a craft of these dimensions. The below decks layout is quite classic day cruiser fare but in the best possible way: it features settees convert to a large double berth and a hideaway head. In terms of its fit-out, we loved the fact that Oltremateria, a sophisticated water-based eco-mortar has been used to finish the cockpit table and for the companionway housing. It is sun and saltwater-resistant, recyclable because it does not contain cement, resins or any other toxic substances that might leach over time or at the end-of-life stage. Oltremateria is also flexible, breathable, fireproof and can be customised to create all types of effects and colours. www.nereayacht.com 156

he personal watercraft is the most classic of all water toys with virtually every superyacht sporting at least one in its hold. Yamaha is very conscious

of this fact and has been keen to ride the wave, so to speak. The result is that it has been doing some honing of its legendary Waverunners for 2020. The pin-up FX series is first off. Aside from new aerodynamic lines and hull colours, these personal watercraft have some pretty innovative electronic controls not least the RiDE™ system and electronic Reverse Assist and TDE for ultra-low speeds and docking as well as Cruise-Assist to set and maintain exact speeds, and three-position No Wake mode for low speed areas. Another major bonus is an industry-first: the clear, concise colour Connext touchscreen. Four versions of the FX will be available in a choice of five different colours. The intake grate and superior controls on the GP1800R HO and GP1800R SVHO are racing-inspired. These extremely agile models guarantee superb performance, ultra-tight turns and a very rewarding ride even in choppy waters. They also boasts ultralight NanoXcel2 hulls into the bargain. In the VX, Yamaha focused on innovation and technologies to deliver a seriously reliable product that is also fuel efficient and doesn’t require much in the way of maintenance. The new model for 2020 is the special white edition of the VX Limited. The EX series now has the new EXR too. With an edgy livery in on-trend colours, it is sporty yet simple to handle. It also has a 50-litre tank, easy-to-read coloured multi-function LCD instruments, and a two-tone seat so you can ride alone with friends. There is also a functional and well-designed reboarding step. Last but very far from least is the legendary Super Jet Stand-Up which is designed specifically for racing and is more popular than ever in the same

colour as last year’s version. www.yamaha-motor.eu Aerodynamic new lines and an edgy design for the FX series from Yamaha. Available in a choice of four versions and five colours

But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a fierce competitive edge to the proceedings - although there was hardly a gust of wind, the 51st Barcolana was fought out in the same spirit as an America’s Cup with the prize for last place go to a crew of dentists from Serbia, Montenegro and Italy on board the 5-foot xXeinos. Nobody was put off by the calm weather, all the crews on board the 2,015 yachts taking part gave their best. From the smallest to the largest yachts, the simplest to the most technically advanced, all together at the start, creating a spectacle enjoyed by the whole of Trieste. The 51st Barcolana had its victor - Way of Life, owned by the Slovenian Gašper Vinčec.
