In Alexi’s illustration “What’s In My Head”, she explores feelings and perceptions of the world through expressive imagery. The loud composition of the piece showcases the way in which Alexi views the world as “too loud”, and through many of the illustrations – she explores her interests and fears, with the eye motif referencing how she feels that people view her

In Amelie’s illustration “Me”, she explores how her art provides her with an opportunity to engage in self-expression. Through the figures included in the artwork, Amelie demonstrates many of the things that are important to her – and the way these figures link to the tip of the pen indicate how the artist feels that art allows them to express their inner world.

Through Ava's digital illustration “Inspired Soul”, she explores how art can portray her identity, exploring both her exterior and her inner world. The bright colours of the piece represent her happiness and joy, what she chooses not to hide. The skull and hearing aid motif represents her showing the person she is beneath, the part of her that was born deaf. Ava uses contrast through the bright colours and darker shades to demonstrate two worlds of identity.

With her mixed media collage “Glitter Girl”, Charlize represents herself as Glitter Girl, exploring the theme of self-confidence through rendering herself as a superhero in bright colours: expressing a sense of positivity. Using a collage of words across the backdrop of this work, Charlize shares words she feels represent her – weaving a collage of identity through language.

Through her artwork “More to Me”, Charlotte provides her interpretation of Gustav Klimt's 'Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I' or 'The Woman in Gold'. Like Klimt's piece, her artwork represents her growing dreams, personality and identity. Her piece is her own reminder to defy people's views on her as a person – and to do more than expected.

CHELSEA > QUEENSLAND

Through her wearable art piece “Through My Eyes”, Chelsea highlights her individuality. Painted on canvas, this work was cut and sewn together with polyester padding and finished with a PVC plastic cover. The work uses an array of different greens, each symbolic of a part of Chelsea. The primary colour of this work is emerald green: the same colour as her eyes. The range of different colours is used to highlight the differences we all have, and what makes us all unique.

With her painting “This is Me”, Cleyara showcases how she views the impact of the pandemic on her world. The thought bubbles represent her friends and her grandparents abroad, indicating how she feels during lockdown – and in the background, a meteor shower of viruses is emblematic of the pandemic.

Through her artwork “Don’t Label Me”, Eleanor explores herself through an image of her composed by her interests, personality, and passions. In the work, Eleanor decided to use words to draw her face with a face mask – with the words composing the face mask conveying positivity. Emotions cannot be seen through a face mask, but through the choice of words used to construct the mask, Eleanor expresses how she remains energetic and smiley.

With his skateboard design “The Sunset Connection”, Ewan explores his interest and self through a painted skateboard. Ewan uses the motif of the sunset to explore his love for the beach, and watching the sun fall beneath the sky. The strong contrast of the light of the sun and the darker sky evoke memories of an evening at the beach.

Through her photographic composition “This is Me”, Hayley explores her passions, hobbies and experiences through photographs and items. This includes her photography, painting supplies, hearing aids, a mixer, and other elements –Hayley expresses her multi-faceted interests and parts of herself as a representation of who she is.

ASHER LAUREN > NSW

Through her digital painting “Asher”, Lauren showcases a person very close to her – that is a part of who she is. With her work, Lauren hopes to communicate that identity doesn’t have to revolve around material possessions and that another person can also be a part of who you are. This portrait represents a piece of Lauren’s identity, showing how the bonds we form with others can also be an important part of our own identities.

Through her self-portrait pastel drawing, Lilly expresses herself as a colourful and cheerful person. Through the composition of her work and the use of pastels, Lilly communicates her bright personality using her favourite colours.

Through her work, Nakeita showcases her place between both the deaf and hearing worlds – communicating her experience as a member of two communities.

Through their work “Ever Growing”, Ro demonstrates how they – as a person – are always continuing to change. With the digital illustration of the tree, Ro communicates their continual growth as a person, as they continue to transition into the person they will be: growing toward the sky

SILAS > QUEENSLAND

With his illustration “In a Vacuum”, Silas explores his identity through a series of doodles and coloured drawings that explore his interests. The inclusion of the cochlear implant references his own cochlear implant. The contrast of the colourful centre with the characters outside of it evokes the impression of a colourful “world within a world”.

Through his mixed media composition “This is Me”, Sion expresses his interest and vibrant personality on paper –showcasing his passion for numbers and the alphabet since he was young. The spirals of letters and numbers evoke feelings of wonder, and with the inclusion of the many portraits, Sion showcases both his positivity and his identity.

Through her collage “This is About Me”, Taneya explores her identity through a collage of her interests and herself. The butterflies are a common motif throughout the work, as butterflies are deaf and beautiful – expressing the beauty of deafness. The work uses an array of imagery to explore Taneya’s aspirations, hobbies, and identity.

Through her illustration “I Love My Ears”, Venice explores having two different sides of hearing. With this work, she details how without her Cochlear's, she loves the peace and quiet – but she likes having them on to listen to the world. In the portrait, Venice holds her hearing aids in a love heart shape: showcasing how she loves being able to switch between both worlds.

With her photographic composition “Heart Beyond the Sunset”, Caitlin explores how through her hearing aids she is able to capture her feelings on identity and self. With the heart-shape of the hearing aids in the work, Caitlin showcases how she feels about being a part of the deaf world and is celebrating her differences. Through the sunset background, Caitlin also explores the way in which sunset evokes the theme of calmness, being able to sit in peace, switch off, and to tune out from the world.

With her painting “Daisy Flower”, Chloe explores her love of colour through depicting a vibrant view of a flowery landscape. Through the vibrant pastures, Chloe shows how colour can help to compose a world.

In Jaya’s series of illustrations entitled “Coco and Chanel”, Jaya shares her love for her cats through a series of four sketches – detailing their daily lives through four digital graphic designs. These works focus on the lives of the cats, showcasing their fun antics. It also illustrates Jaya’s close bond with both of them through the heartfelt messages accompanying some of the works.

With his digital illustration “Sunset to Nightset”, Jordan communicates the sense of freedom he feels when watching the sky. As Jordan stares up at the night sky, he is looking for a shooting star. Through the symbolism of the many bright shooting stars against a vast night sky, we are given the impression of a vast world. Jordan uses the imagery of wings to demonstrate how he feels he has the freedom to go anywhere when staring up at the sky.

Through her self-portrait entitled “Maggie”, Maggie demonstrates how sensory disability can sometimes be invisible or hidden. Through this self-portrait, Maggie shows how her deaf blindness can be imperceptible. She encourages the viewer to see her as she is – while knowing that we are all complex individuals with a mask over what lies beneath. Through oil painting, Maggie uses layering to provide more depth and life to her painting: communicating the nuances of herself through the canvas.
