The Ambition of Flight

S

ince the dawn of time, people have dreamed of taking to the sky to experience the joy of flight In 1783, two brothers made history when they ascended over the French countryside in a hot air balloon. One hundred and twenty years later, another pair of brothers made the first p wered flight in a h memade gasoline-burning airplane over a field in orth Carolina. In 1947 the H-4 Hercules, nicknamed the Spruce Goose for it’s huge wood frame (actually made from birch, not spruce), fl w briefly out over the Pacific Ocean The flight lasted less than a minu , but it was a huge technical achievement for aeronautics — a precursor to today’s jumbo jets — and for designer and pilot Howard Hughes. It’s clear that humans are fascinated by flight both literally and figu atively. On a warm day early in November, I was invited to tour Google’s new Playa Vista offices built inside the ormer Hughes Aviation hangar where the Spruce Goose was born seven decades ago. Though I did ’t get to see the entire 450,000 square feet of the cathedral-like four-story hangar, I was stunned by what I did see. Every little detail of the design inside the carefully restored wooden structure has been carefully thought through with the utmost reverence to both the legacy of Howard Hughes and the future of technology as a whole, proving that Google is indeed a place where ideas take flight The tour sta ted out with a “perception sculpture” that at first glance appears to be a cloud of metal spheres until you step back and a ghostly image of the Spruce Goose magically emerges. I’m not surprised such a marvelous piece of reimagined architecture exists in Playa Vista. All the people who live, work and play here regard their workspaces, living spaces and outdoor spaces as a reflecti n of themselves — or at least the people they aspire to be: kind, intelligent, cutting-edge, aesthetically pleasing, and with a wealth of resources. Welcome, Googlers! We’re happy to have you here. May your dreams take flight Shanee Edwards Managing Editor · editor@playavistadirect.com

Holiday Hangout @ The ResoRT It was the most wonderful time of the year at the annual Playa Vista Holiday Hangout. Friends and families gathered at The Reso t on Dec. 1 to frolic in a “snow”-laden Christmas tree forest as magicians, puppeteers and jugglers dazzled everyone throughout the night. TheTinseltone Carolers serenaded the crowd with holiday melodies while merrymakers romped inside a giant snow globe. At Stacy’s Cookie Lounge, kids of all ages decorated hundreds of gingerbread treats before devouring their tasty creations. The vening also included several gourmet food trucks and a live DJ spinning the latest hits. Playa Vista Director of Experience Sandra Kitashima was “super excited” to see so many people come together for the California-style winter wonderland, “even just to enjoy the holiday lights.” James Suarez, the founder and CEO of one of the evening’s sponsors, Fineman Suarez Real Estate, said, “This vent is about bringing the community closer and building relationships.” — Maria Martin 10 Playa Vista Direct | December 2018 · January 2019

OPENING NIGHT @ PICCOLO RITROVO RESTAURANT ˜ e chianti flowed like water as Playa Vista’s newest restaurant, the Italian eatery Piccolo Ritrovo, celebrated its grand opening on Nov. 9. Husband-and-wife team Ivan and Deva Kodeh, who live in Playa Vista and also own the original Piccolo Ritrovo in Pacific Palisades, have completely reinvented the old Pinkberry space on Seablu˝ Drive across from Concert Park. ˜ e vibe is upscale yet casual and seats 40 people inside and 40 people out on a patio that’s lined with heat lamps for chilly nights. Guests at the opening-night party enjoyed tray-passed bites of Caesar salad, a variety of pizzas, picatta-style salmon fillet with grilled vegetables and roasted potatoes, skewers of chicken breast in lemon-caper sauce, and penne rustiche — a small tube pasta with rapini, sausage and sundried tomatoes. ˜ e restaurant’s regular menu includes weekly specials for local employees, takeout and delivery. — Shanee Edwards 12 PLAYA VISTA DIRECT | DECEMBER 2018 · JANUARY 2019

Halloween Hangout @ The Lawn A giddy, costumed crowd gathered on Halloween at the park across from Runway’s green space known as The awn. Little monsters, ghouls and witches mixed with superheroes, astronauts and unicorns while a DJ spun family-friendly dance tunes. Two families of land sharks patrolled a sea of grass while dogs dressed as bees and princesses upped the cuteness factor. The most e citing part of the event came when a group of nearly 100 Playa Vista Elementary students did their best lead-footed zombie-shimmy into the park and performed the “Th iller” dance from Michael Jackson’s classic 1982 video. Many of the undead performers were so committed to the freaky frolic, they stayed in the dead zone for the entire song, bewitching the mostly living audience. The vent was co-hosted by Silicon Beach Parents Group and Playa Vista Community Services, and sponsored by Kris Zacuto of Hilton & Hyland. — Shanee Edwards 14 Playa Vista Direct | December 2018 · January 2019

At age 19, artist Karen Bystedt, then a film student at NYU, reached out to Warhol and asked him if he would sit for a photography session with her. My Year-End Financial Suggestions #1 TAX LOSS HARVESTING

Finding a suitable replacement for investments you hold with a loss allows you to offset gains while maintaining your investment strategy. Given the recent market volatility, the alternative of sitting in cash for 30 days after taking a loss could mean missing out on a rebound.

#2 DONOR ADVISED FUNDS

Donor Advised Funds are among the easiest and most taxadvantaged ways for donors to give to charity across the spectrum of wealth. They can also help you maximize your tax savings today even if you delay the decision on where your money goes.

#3 ROTH CONVERSION

While income limits may preclude some investors from contributing to a Roth IRA, anyone can convert funds from a Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. If you are in a low tax bracket this year, a Roth conversion may provide compelling benefits; the funds will benefit from tax-deferred growth potential and you may be able to create tax-free income for your retirement. A Financial Advisor can and should be adding value in areas like saving you money on taxes, helping you reach your goals with clear, actionable financial planning, and educating you and your family members with seminars, emails, quarterly reports and meetings. Speak with your Financial Advisor to determine if a Donor Advised Fund or Roth IRA is right for you. Consult your own tax advisor before converting to a Roth IRA. Happy Holidays!

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH A globetrotting British activist and filmmaker shares the uplifting story of a Coors beer heir who rose above personal tragedy BY SHANEE EDWARDS

K

erry David, an award-winning film producer – and now antipoaching activist – has lived what some might call a charmed life. ° ough she’s poured blood, sweat and, most recently, tears into her work, amazing opportunities just seem to find her. Hailing from England, David was bit by the travel bug as a young woman and traipsed happily all around the globe before working a temp job at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood. ° ere she learned the contract side of filmmaking but didn’t yet know she wanted to be a movie producer. “What I did know,” says David at her Playa Vista home, “was that I had a lock-me-up crush on Tom Cruise.” So when she was o˛ ered a job to be Nicole Kidman’s executive assistant (Cruise and Kidman were married at the time), she jumped at the chance. “If they had done one ounce of due diligence on me, they never would have hired me!” says David with a laugh. After working for the power couple for three years, she managed to build up the confidence and connections to start her own production company. “° e first project that I optioned was ‘Agent Cody Banks,’ which ended up being a huge franchise, so I was super lucky.” By 2010, however, David became disillusioned with the film industry after the financing fell out of several of her projects. Wanting to take a break she went to Africa to build an orphanage. “In Ghana,” says David, “I spent three years producing an orphanage. We

Brewing heir Bill Coors in his youth

called it a Musical Village for Children, as opposed to an orphanage, because we thought that had a negative connotation. It’s probably the best thing I’ll ever do in my life.” In 2013, David returned to filmmaking again as she went into preproduction for “Breaking their Silence: Women on the Frontline of the Poaching War,” a documentary about the African women fighting to prevent the slaughter of innocent animals. But just as she returned to the U.S. to start writing the treatment, she got a call that would a˛ ect her life in a new way. Titan of the brewing industry and heir to the Coors Brewing Company, Bill Coors wanted to make a film about his life. In his late nineties at the time, he insisted David not only produce the film

but also direct it — a new role for her. ° ough she hadn’t heard of Bill Coors at the time, she quickly became intrigued as she heard his story. “It was just heart-shattering all the things this man came back from. I immediately got this sense of the man behind the mask,” she recalls. Bill Coors was the grandson of German immigrant Adolf Coors, who stowed away on a ship to get to America and eventually founded the Coors Brewing Company in Colorado in 1873. Bill Coors, a Princeton-educated chemical engineer, cast aside his own dream of becoming a doctor to devote himself to the family business, and almost singlehandedly turned aluminum cans into an (Continued on page 22) PLAYA VISTA DIRECT | DECEMBER 2018 · JANUARY 2019 21

industry standard. But his life was not without adversity. Th ough interviews with Coors and other family members, the film sha es details about his grandfather’s suicide and his uncle’s murder during a kidnaping attempt. Bill Coors also lost an infant son, then an adult daughter who suffered from depression and also committed suicide. It’s not surprising Coors also battled depression, but he didn’t give up on himself. “He was determined to find out what was wrong with him and to seek a holistic solution. Even though depression didn’t have a label back then, he knew there was something very wrong with him. He went to the Mayo Clinic where they did all these tests. Physically he was in perfect form, so he knew there was something else that had to be wrong.” Coors stopped drinking and began focusing on regular physical exercise

David sharing a happy moment with Coors before his death in October; he was 102

that included exploring the great outdoors. This n w lifestyle lifted his spirits, and he shared his enthusiasm for fitness with his employees, becoming an early advocate for wellness in the workplace. When you look at all the tragedy Coors overcame, it’s easy to see how the film ot its title, “Bill Coors: TheWill to Live.” But the title takes on new meaning when you consider that just two hours after the film p emiered in Los

Angeles on Oct. 12, Coors passed away peacefully at his home in Colorado at the age of 102. “He had the will to live just long enough to see his message and legacy birthed into the world at large before fina ly letting go. His message of love will now live on forever,” says David. While every step of this project has been emotional for David, she remains humbled by the experience. “I feel like it was fated to come to me. The e was no reason I should’ve made this film — it shoul ’ve been Ken Burns — but I’m so blessed that it came to me.” “Bill Coors: TheWill to Live” is currently streaming on Amazon and Amazon Prime and will be available on DVD in January. eutsch partner Pam Scheideler does not think of herself as a futurist. Yet as the ad agency’s Chief Digital Oÿ cer, she’s spearheaded some of the firm’s most innovative web campaigns — from the creation of a platform that’ll match you with your perfect Volkswagen model to the development of a chat bot that’ll take your Taco Bell orders via Slack. Her teams have even engineered a program that’ll harness the power of your voice so that you can drive a car virtually on your computer. ˛ at inventive outlook has earned her accolades from industry platforms such as ˛ e Internationalist, Cannes Lions and Campaign US (including an “Innovators” award). But Scheideler believes that her real superpower isn’t really about clairvoyance, but bringing a tangible taste of the future into the present. “What I would say my real ninja power is, is that I’m able to understand futurists, and then kind of bring that future closer in,” said Scheideler, 46, who started coding at age 11 on a Commodore 64. “Technology for technology’s sake is not as interesting as showing the impact that it will have on our lives. … So I feel like a translator for futurists.” And despite the internet’s implosion in 2016, Scheideler is still a big believer in the worldwide web, discussing its early impact on her during the Wimmies’ (Women in Media) October Fall Fête, held at Deutsch’s Playa Vista

Steelhead studio. (Wimmies is a nonprofit networking group for women in digital media and marketing.) As a kid growing up in rural upstate New York, the internet was Scheideler’s sanctuary. “One of the reasons why I love the internet so much and I’m so fiercely passionate about the internet as a community organizing tool is because it created a way to connect with people

that shared your same interest, so that I didn’t have to go to high school and pretend that I [cared] about football,” she confessed during the fireside chat. Scheideler also discussed her mixed reaction to receiving her first computer (remember that Commodore 64?), which in her mind really should have been a ColecoVision gaming consul. “My mom was kind of hippie-ish and she was like, ‘You know, if you learn to code your own games you can make up whatever you want,’” said Scheideler. “And so then I dutifully, out of total boredom, wound up writing a program that was like, ‘Input the month of your birthday and I’ll tell you back your birthstone,’ and off I ent.” That te h background led her to a formative stint at an e-commerce company in the early 2000s, founding her own interactive production company, and eventually heading up production and operations at Google’s Creative Lab, where she worked with a small team on “moonshot” projects pushing the boundaries of technology. “When a spaceship pulls up into your backyard, you don’t ask any questions, you just get in,” she joked with me later about getting the job at Google. But before that, Scheideler worked in New York advertising and discussed

the challenges of moving between the all-hands-on-deck-style of tech in her early career to the more hierarchical world of “Mad Men”-style advertising. “The e were a lot of Don Draper-like vibes,” she said, referencing the popular TV show’s headstrong lead. “I really struggled to find m self.” But like Peggy Olson, the lone female copywriter in “Mad Men’s” ficti nal ad fi m, she carved out her own path, eventually finding her w y to L.A.’s advertising community. “I feel comfortable with the technical and creative community in LA as that combination here feels like something very special,” she later told me. During the fi eside chat, Scheideler also discussed the tough decision to return from maternity leave early and offered tailored advice to young women on how to deal with career-sabotaging male bosses, balancing work and family, and finding an emp wering work culture.

“Basically your life consists of the fi e people that you spend the most time with,” she said. “It really is about how you spend your time and the people that you let into your life.” Scheideler later cited groups like Wimmies as a positive way for professional women to find peer suppo t. “If you surround yourself with likeminded, female professionals that are working on figu ing out how to navigate a tilted landscape, that’s a good idea,” she told me. As for finding her wn tribe, Scheideler feels right at home at Deutsch, joking that if her husband hadn’t insisted on moving to Malibu, she’d probably live right across the street from the fi m in Playa Vista. “I’d be here all the time,” she laughed. “I’m blown away by the tech and creative culture in LA, specifi ally in Playa Vista.”

n early November we opened our inboxes to find an i vitation we’d been hoping to get for two years: a guided tour of Google’s newest offic space, located in the historic Spruce Goose Hangar in Playa Vista. Finally, after spying though gates and dust to get the tiniest glimpse of what’s inside those cavernous wooden walls, Google was opening its door to us. What’s most impressive about the storied hangar is its aeronautical history. In 1947, aerospace tycoon Howard Hughes’ storied H-4 Hercules — an experimental wooden “fl ing boat” with a wingspan of 321 feet, more than 120 feet greater than a Boeing 747 and still the longest of any plane ever fl wn — emerged in giant pieces from a cavernous, four-story aircraft hangar along a dirt runway that’s now the ground below Playa Vista. Nicknamed the Spruce Goose (though actually made of birch), the aircraft still ranks among the greatest technological achievements of its time. Seventy-one years later, the hangar that gave birth to the Spruce Goose has been reconfigu ed as a workspace for today’s leading innovators in digital technology: Google, along with sister company YouTube. The esult is an ambitious architectural and design effort to preserve the integrity of the original structure while constructing multiple levels of contemporary workspaces inside of it — “a building within a building,” explained Kristi Paulson, a principal at ZGF Architects. Look up from the polished concrete ground floor and ou’ll see the hangar’s original wooden beams, curved like the bottom of a massive ship turned upside down, sanded down to the rich, warm brown of unpainted Douglas fi . Thi d-story windows that had been boarded up for decades and newly cut skylights flood the sp ce with natural light. Mayor Eric Garcetti led members of the press into the hangar’s main atrium to admire a hanging “Perception Sculpture.” Upon first glance the sculpture appears to be a cloud of small metal spheres. But if you step back to view it from a distance, the ghostly image of the Spruce Goose magically appears. It’s truly stunning. Sean Madden, founder of SJMDesign, who worked with ZGF Architects and Arup Engineers, said, “It’s the Ghost Ship, coming back to its home. Some of that inspiration came from wondering if there’s a ghost in the building.” Though M dden hasn’t personally experienced anything otherworldly while working inside the hangar, one of his employees did. “One of my artists was working at night and said, ‘I felt something weird. Not really scary, but just a presence.’ So it’s possible,” says Madden who seems to really like the idea of a haunted workspace. “We tend to embrace it, why not? Ghost Star and it has a little, discoverable ghost of Howard Hughes that no one even knows is there. The populati n of the building will have to find it You may be one of the first people to kn w about it,” said Madden. In an interview we did with Hercules Campus Development Manager Milan Ratkovich back in 2016, he said there were reports of some paranormal activity at one of the structures, but he declined to say which one. Now we know. Beyond the atrium, newly constructed workspaces are staggered one to three stories above the floo , set back from the hangar’s original walls and ceiling by at least 20 feet in order to preserve the expansiveness of the space. It’s a concept driven home by unobstructed hallway views of the east and west walls 750 feet apart — a distance of more than two football fields “We knew this was going to be a wooden cathedral,” said Paulson. “The space, the scale — you wanted to still be able to feel the hangar, even though we were going to build something new on the inside. It was also very intentional to make sure the new architecture had a very distinct look from the old architecture so that they were understood as separate things, although now they are intrinsically connected through the circulation.” The nar ow engineering offices tha divided the original space in two along the length of the structure have been repurposed as collaborative workspaces connected by open stairways and bridges, allowing occupants to weave through a building spine that might otherwise be divisive. “Google is not a static company,” said Paulson. “This is not static offi space.”

MOM UP WITH GABRIELLE

Yes, I have a pet pig BY GABRIELLE D’ADDARIO

I

t happened by accident. I was throwing an end of summer carnival with a petting zoo that included baby Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs. As I snuggled with one of the little squealers, I became completely awestruck by its cuteness. I gushed and asked the pig wrangler if I could keep one. Much to my surprise, he said yes. Not sure if he was serious, I decided to leave it up to fate. A few weeks later, I found myself hooked up to an IV at the UCLA Infusion Center, where I undergo treatment for a chronic illness I have. I try to maintain a positive attitude when I’m there but it was one of those days where I was feeling emotional. ˜ at’s when I saw a text on my phone that said, “Hey, are you around this afternoon? I’ve got your pig.” In an instant, my day went from lousy to great. Without a second thought in my head, I responded with my address. A few hours later, up pulled the butcher’s van (yes, he would have been used for meat) and I was being handed a crate with a tiny black pig my kids named Gilbert. Now my family and I didn’t exactly have a discussion about the pig, which was a mistake on my end. My husband and I have di° erent viewpoints on having a pig in the house. I grew up dreaming of becoming a zoologist while my husband probably couldn’t tell you the names of any of his childhood pets. Our daughter has inherited my love for all animals and thinks a pig is the best pet ever, but my son takes after his dad and still doesn’t approve. ˜ ey’re big fans of his Roomba like vacuuming skills to clean up the food they throw on the floor but not so much when it comes to his high pitched squeals when they try to pick him up.

36 PLAYA VISTA DIRECT | DECEMBER 2018 · JANUARY 2019

Gabrielle D’Addario with Gilbert, her Vietnamese pot-bellied pig

˜ at said, the people of Playa Vista are thrilled to meet Gilbert. ˜ e amount of happiness I see the pig bring to others warms my heart. Last week, I had a girl walk up to us at Runway, sni˝ ing from crying, and she said, “I’ve had the worst day and seeing his cute little tail wagging just made me so happy!” Reactions like that have been quite common which has led me to want to train him to be a therapy pig where he can visit kids, or patients or go anywhere he can bring support. I’ve even heard there’s a therapy pig at the San Francisco Airport. At 12-weeks old, Gilbert’s about 20 lbs. but he’ll grow to be over 100 lbs.

As he gets bigger it’s unclear if we’ll be able to keep him at home. Sending Bert back to the farm, where he’ll definitely be slaughtered, isn’t an option in my mind so I’m considering other ideas like finding a Playa Vista business that is open to having an oÿ ce pet. In the meantime, Gilbert loves to meet people so if you see us walking around town, feel free to stop, say hello or get a selfie. If you give him a treat, he might even show you some of his tricks. You can follow Gilbert on Instagram at @˜ ePlayaVistaPig or send him an email at gilbertthepig@gmail.com.

YOUTH IN ACTION

Teen Vogue taps Serena Williams, Cara Delevingne and young activists to blaze a trail for change in Playa Vista STORY BY KELBY VERA | PHOTOS BY GETTY IMAGES

T

here’s no denying that 2018 has been a watershed year for youth in politics. At the forefront of activism in gun control, immigration, the environment and more, young people have proven to be the change makers. And that much was clear during the second Teen Vogue Summit, where the power of under-20s reigned supreme. After already establishing itself as the “woke” little sister of fashion’s flagship publication, Teen Vogue continued to let fashion and feminism intermingle at the event held at 72andSunny’s Playa Vista campus on December 2. While celebrity names like Olympian Serena Williams and actress/ model Cara Delevingne added a certain panache; empowerment, activism, and feminism were the focus of the forum. ° e day started on an inspirational note as Cara Delevingne introduced four of Teen Vogue’s 21 Under 21 honorees: activist Deja Foxx, fashion designer Tia Adeola, speed skater Maame Biney, and Britain’s first transgender MP Lily Madigan. ° e group proved the power of Gen-Z as they discussed their day-to-day life, self-care tips and long-term ambitions. Community was also at the forefront of the event, as keynote Serena Williams sat down with 11-year-old activist Naomi Wadler. Many know Wadler for the rally call she made at the March For Our Lives back in spring. “For us women of color,” said Williams, “it’s really important that we support each other. I always like to say that

Actress Cara Delevingne on the red carpet with young fashion designer Tia Adeola

the success of one woman should be the inspiration for the next. And if we look at it that way, there’d be so much more that we could accomplish.” In between the main talks held on a sunny lawn scattered with flu˝ y bean bags from sponsor PB Teen, breakout sessions focused on everything from innovations in coding to social media entrepreneurship, toxic masculinity, being queer in Hollywood, and workout sessions hosted by Puma. During breaks smartly dressed teens toted around pink backpacks and whirred between a Victoria’s Secret PINK pop-up shop, Bare Mineralshosted headshots, a PlayStation booth, and courtyard of food trucks. Attendees were sure to make the most of their day, given the $549 ticket price. (A ‘career

immersion’ intensive costing an extra $200 took place the day before.) ° ere was also charmingly snarky merchandise including shirts that read “LOL Patriarchy” and a trendy denim hat with the words “Your fragile masculinity is showing.” Designer Prabal Gurung gave the final keynote, where he challenged the fashion industry to change the way they represent race, sexuality, gender and shape. ° e Nepalese fashion designer, who has been a pioneer in plus-sized fashion, explained: “What I find really problematic with fashion is the complete lack of accountability, the complete lack of representation and tokenizing of minorities, whether you’re a person of color, whether you’re transgender, whether you’re gay, any kind of minority… Fashion has a long way to go. ° ere’s no doubt about it.” ° e day wrapped up with an intimate performance from pop star Lauren Jauregui, who performed her new song “Expectations” backed by an all-female band. ° e event helped cement Teen Vogue’s identity as a forward-thinking feminist platform, especially important since the magazine ceased publishing its print edition last year. Additionally, former fashion editor of New York Magazine’s ° e Cut Lindsay Peoples Wagner took the helm as Editor in Chief in October. “Everything we do is for every single one of you,” Peoples Wagner told the Teen Vogue community, welcoming the conversation to come. The ischer-Burke family brings creative flair o their cozy nest Story by Robyn Paris | Photos by Zsuzsi Steiner

he Fischer-Burke family may have run out of wall space, but that hasn’t curbed their appetite

for art. Damien Fischer and Jami Burke have fi led their two-story “beachy contemporary” condo in The Camden with unique pieces that reflect the colorful and eclectic Los Angeles art scene. Inspired by a Downtown L.A. mural by Kim West called “Ode to Bohemia,” which features a buck emerging from a neon-pastel forest, they commissioned a similar piece by West for a wall in their home. Th y’ve added to their collection with several gold-and-white paintings by nomadic street artist 2501, who created the sleek mural outside the Whole Foods at Eighth & Grand, and scored a few

gallery pieces by French artists Jaybo Monk at a recent show moments before Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys swooped in and bought all the rest. Th ee paintings along their staircase are by Aaron de la Cruz, who painted the large Playa Vista mural adjacent to the Honest Co.’s parking lot. For art collectors, Fischer and Burke are extremely down-to-earth parents of their two adorable daughters, 4-year-old Emerson and 19-month-old Sloane. Fischer, a biochemist and Agilent Technologies executive, became a Playa Vista resident when he rented an apartment at Crescent Park West about 10 years ago. He met Burke, a marketing executive, on a blind date a few years later. Th y moved in together and lived at Villa Savona before buying their current

Emerson cuddles with her fuzzy friends

home three years ago. Their lab adoodle, Helix, has been with them since their first apartment together. With both cold brew coffee and beer on tap and freely offered to guests, the Fischer home is welcoming and warm. A large oak wood dining table, which serves as a centerpiece for their living area, was hand-crafted by an artisan friend and furniture-maker Justin Marshall. “Art collecting? It’s a really dangerous hobby,” jokes Fischer. “Yes, we’re really happy we ran out of walls!” adds Burke. “It’s not like it’s money in the bank, but we love it,” says Fischer. “It’s nice to have something that you find is beautiful aesthetically. Tha ’s the value of it to us.” (Continued on page 44) Playa Vista Direct | December 2018 · January 2019 43

(Continued from page 43)

Books and storytelling are also important to the family. Burke has decorated Sloane’s nursery with artwork from the new children’s board book releases of “˜ e Little Princess” and “Anne of Green Gables.” She had actually emailed the publishers suggesting the project before they were in print, and bought these prints as soon as they became available. Fischer is an active outdoorsman with a garage full of equipment for snowboarding, skiing, backpacking and rock climbing. “Figuring out how to integrate the little ones into our lifestyle is important,” he says. “It’s a life goal to make sure one or both of the girls are interested in hiking or backpacking.” On typical weekends the family goes out for movies and bike rides, hangs out at ˜ e Resort’s pool and spends lots of time in local playgrounds. Running into families they know keeps Playa Vista life breezy and fun.

The Fischer-Burke family likes to stay active with bike rides and visits to local parks and the pool

“If you’re looking for a way to blow half a day and not plan anything, just go to the pool. ˜ ere are 10 to 15 other families there; we hang out and barbecue,” says Fischer. He and Burke have convinced friends and family to move to Playa

Vista, including Fischer’s father, step-mother and sister (real estate agent Sienna Fischer). With parks, co° ee shops, restaurants and now family members all within walking distance, “I’d be happy to stay in Playa Vista forever,” Burke says.

The estival was a showcase for environmentally conscious films rom both accomplished filmmakers and students alik . Highlights of the festival included actor Jeff B idges’ feature-length documentary “Living in the Future’s Past” that he produced and narrates. The film i ’t as much of a how-to lesson on fixing the collapsing environment but more of an examination of the factors that led to this point. Another highlight was the festival’s namesakes Dan and Susan Gottlieb’s short documentary “The Gottlieb ative Garden: A California Love Story.” The film is a beautiful visual expl ation of the famous Gottlieb garden that is a California native plant ecosystem located in Beverly Hills. A PRESCRIPTION FOR

HEALTH AND HAPPINESS Cedars-Sinai Playa Vista’s Dr. Ruchika Chhibar o˜ ers three New Year’s resolutions that busy people can actually keep STORY AND PHOTOGRAPH BY COURTNAY ROBBINS

T

he beginning of a new year is an ideal opportunity for personal renewal and fresh starts. Whether you’re trying to lose a few pounds or improve your mood, Dr. Ruchika Chhibar of Cedars-Sinai Playa Vista shares three healthy New Year’s resolutions that are achievable for busy people.

1

Make Exercise Part of Your Routine We all know we have to exercise to maintain good health, yet we often find it diÿ cult to set aside time to work out. “You have to make a plan to exercise regularly. If you plan to do 50 minutes of moderate exercise, you can space it out in a period of a week. If that’s too much, start slow and progress towards that. Don’t be too hard on yourself,” Chhibar says. If you have a busy work schedule and sit at a desk all day, be sure to get up every hour to walk around — even if just for a minute or two. If you have a meeting planned, use that as an opportunity to move. “˛ ere are so many opportunities to walk [in Playa Vista],” she says. “Walk and talk.”

2

Take Mindfulness Seriously Mental health goes hand-in-hand with physical health. Chhibar recommends practicing mindfulness exercises for improved mental and emotional health.

Dr. Chhibar recommends making exercise part of your daily routine

“I know it’s tough to find one hour every day to do meditation and yoga,” she says, “but if you just find five to ten minutes just to concentrate on your breathing, that really helps.” Mindfulness practice can reduce stress, chronic pain and sleep disturbances. ˛ e Cedars-Sinai Integrative Health Program o˝ ers mindfulness training through daylong workshops and an eight-week program in Playa Vista.

3

Cut Back on Processed Food Maintaining a healthy bodyweight can reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and certain cancers. If you have a few pounds to lose, Chhibar recommends choosing whole grains and veggies over processed foods that are often high in salt and concentrated sugars.

“Processed food has a lot of sodium,” Chhibar warns. “Two grams of sodium in 24 hours is good for everybody, even patients with health issues.” And if you pick up a packaged meal that has more than that, it’s better to put it back on the shelf. Cut back slowly on unhealthy foods that have been part of your diet for a long time. When you change your eating habits, it may take a couple weeks until you start to notice any di˝ erence in your body weight or energy level. Bottom Line: Keep Your Eyes on the Prize Set realistic goals and don’t give up. “If you take care of your body and if you are mindful, people are finding their lifespan is longer and healthier,” Chhibar says. “You feel good emotionally and physically.” PLAYA VISTA DIRECT | DECEMBER 2018 · JANUARY 2019 49

Slow-cooked comfort comes

ome things about Hal’s Bar & Grill never change: Hal’s turkey burger, which has its own following on Instagram; Hal’s Caesar salad; the organic half chicken, a favorite of regulars; live jazz on Sunday afternoons and Monday nights; Mikel Alatza’s three-dimensional portrait of co-owner Hal Frederick hanging on the back wall across from Kwaku Alston’s larger-thanlife black-and-white portrait of a sharply dressed lone African-American man walking down the road holding a guitar case; and the sight of Hal himself, white hair, classy suit, big smile. And then, of course, some things do change. Like when the original location of Hal’s Bar & Grill on Abbot Kinney closed its doors in April 2015 after 30 years and opened down the street, sharing the former Primitivo space with its sister restaurant, Casalinda Mexican Grill, also owned by Hal’s Bar & Grill. Then in April 2017, Hal’s Bar & Grill launched its new, additional location

at Runway Playa Vista, serving only breakfast and lunch for six months while they waited for a liquor license. This m nth, Hal’s announced the arrival of a new executive chef, Lee Garman, who replaces retiring Manuel Mares, the culinary maestro in charge of Hal’s kitchen for the past three decades. Chef Garman is signaling his arrival with a new menu, first u veiled on November 15. “This n w menu has a lot more comfort, slow food,” explains Garman, who comes to Hal’s via Trejo’s Cantina in Woodland Hills and Plan Check, “food that takes time to make and needs a lot of love: collard and mustard greens for ravioli and salads, slowcooked foods like red beans and rice. We will also be featuring moles, or our versions of moles.” The resh collard green salad is a small mountain of healthy living, bursting with sharp fla ors — blue cheese crumbles, crispy bacon and candied

pecans — tossed in a honey cider vinaigrette, with a beet pickled egg on the side. According to Garman, it took his team two weeks to get the salad dressing just right. Collard greens are bitter after all, and so mixing just the right amount of honey and cider to cut the bitters was akin to figu ing out the Rubik’s Cube. The pan oasted sea scallops show off the hef ’s love affair with Mexi an fla ors. (When asked his favorite style of cooking, Garman replies, “Mexican: It is such a complex and rich culinary tradition.”) The s allops are floating in a bed of esquite — an exquisitely creamy, limey, cotija cheesy Mexican street corn — with added swirls of guava jelly. The n w menu is showing early signs of success. The du k asada tacos, sweetened with pineapple and passion fruit chutney, sold out in one-and-a-half (Continued on page 56) Playa Vista Direct | December 2018 · January 2019 53

hours the second night the new menu was available. When speaking about his new menu, Garman is quick to highlight the contributions of the other cooks in his kitchen. The sa ory mole poured over the mustard greens and burrata ravioli is the recipe of prep cook Eloisa’s grandma. Lead cook Ryan is the mastermind behind the chorizo red beans and Spanish rice, which serve as the bed for the succulent braised short rib. As 6 p.m. rolls around on this midNovember Saturday night, Hal’s is fi ling up nicely. The bar and g ill occupies the niche for a casual, elegant eatery at Runway. Tonight’s crowd is a hodgepodge of hip baby boomers, UCLA and USC sweatshirts, clusters of stylish millennials (some here with their parents), date-night couples, and more couples at the bar well positioned to watch college football on the large, flat sc een. Most customers are probably ordering Hal’s signature dishes: the Caesar

salad, turkey burger, organic half chicken or their burger, which is now called the “off-the-men ” burger. But for the adventurous eaters who order off the beaten path like the braised short rib or (one of the best desserts I’ve ever eaten) the salted caramel mousse and sweet potato pudding shaped into a perfect scoop by vanilla gel and sitting atop a shortbread cookie, they are in for a tasty treat.

“My first time in a kit hen was with my grandfather,” shares Garman. “His mother owned a diner. He taught me a lot about cooking. He baked the best pies and made the best pancakes.” It should come as no surprise that Garman will be launching a brunch menu at Hal’s soon — another niche at Runway that Hal’s fi ls so uniquely: swingin’ Sunday brunch with live jazz.
