Today it's important and necessary to save money. Furthermore, I think you'll agree with me that the last thing we should ever do is lower the quality of the food we eat. With that said, it is a matter of fact that one of the healthiest and best ways to save money in today's "New Economy" is to plant and grow a food bearing garden for you and your family. Yes Grow a Victory Garden that can give you victory in your wallet, as well as in your health. Let's face it buying quality Fruit and Veggies gets real expensive, real quick. But here's the thing, with a little time and determination you can have a bountiful garden full of your family's favorites at a fraction of the cost and actually very little work. (I used to garden for stress relief it has always been very relaxing and fun to watch things grow from the little work you put into it.) Even better, you'll probably end up with much more than you could possibly eat in a season which then gives the option of stocking up with canning and freezing for future use throughout the fall and winter months saving you even more money! It's also a great idea to grow extra things like the ever multiplying zucchini, for friends, neighbors and family. Most will be more than happy to take home their bit of bounty from your garden. With that said, here are some tips to grow your beautiful and bountiful garden: You need to know that most vegetables need around 6 to 8 hours of sunlight and that you can intermingle your veggies. For instance you can grow your quick growing veggies like lettuce and radishes between the rows of slower growing veggies, like corn beets or tomatoes hence making the most use of the area you have available. Another important tip, especially through the dry periods, make sure you give your vegetable garden some extra watering. Give them an inch or more of water each week, particularly when they are fruiting. Here's something else, during the growing season make sure you watch out for insects that can eat up your harvests or even destroy your plantings. The earlier you notice a bad-bug problem the easier it is to get rid of them. Of course, organic methods are preferable, after all, you and those you love will be eating these veggies. I prefer natural organic methods like beneficial bugs, birds, frogs, hand picking (which can be a fun adventure with the kids) and much safer insecticidal soaps. But be careful not to use the insecticidal soap unless it becomes absolutely necessary as it can affect the good bugs as well as the damaging bad bugs.

Yes, Organic gardening is the more healthy and 'environmentally friendly' option, the "Green Option." After the bounty, that is after you have harvested your crop, it's time to recycle the vegetable waste into your very own compost pile. That way it will be ready for your new Victory Garden next spring. Last but not least, is the very important tip to protect your garden from foraging animals. They are always looking for a tasty treat. There are many ways to do this. One is a simply surrounding your garden with a fence that will keep out dogs, rabbits, deer and other animals. Make no mistake; the damage of pilfering animals during one season can equal the cost of a fence. You can also give the fence a double duty, and use it as a frame to grow peas, beans, tomatoes, and other veggies that need that upward support. Furthermore, did you know that certain plants, like boxwoods, actually repel critters such as deer? A hedge of these can look lovely and also protect your garden.

This labor of love can pay back at least 10 fold, giving you victory with a garden full of delicious, healthy veggies and fruit for you and yours!
