A Message From the Board

Welcome to the 2022-2023 KeyBank Broadway Series! What a thrill it is to begin this season by opening the national tour of the timeless and incomparable Les Misérables. Being the first city to put this musical phenomenon back on the road speaks to the expertise of our staff, the quality of our facilities and the welcoming and appreciative nature of our outstanding audiences here in Cleveland. It is a testament to your enthusiasm and loyalty that Playhouse Square has been able to grow the Broadway Series from one week of performances to two in 1996, and then from two weeks to three in 2016, making Cleveland one of just a handful of cities around the country able to support Broadway show runs of that length. And, thanks to many of you in the audience today, we continue to have the largest base of season ticket holders for touring Broadway in North America!

As we open the season, our Education Department prepares to welcome families and students to the Children’s Theater Series and Student Matinee Performances, both presented by University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, providing parents and teachers the opportunity to introduce a new generation to the magic and importance of live theater.

And, as we announced in August, Playhouse Square has named a new President and CEO who will join the organization in early 2023. We are thrilled to bring Craig Hassall, current Chief Executive of Royal Albert Hall in London and one of the world’s top artistic leaders, to Cleveland as we continue to build upon our position of strength and expand our local, national and international impact. Craig is a visionary and innovator who brings unmatched ability in operations; broad, international experience; and deep relationships across the performing arts industry.

For the past several months and through the end of December, we are commemorating the 100th Anniversary of our historic theaters. We wonder what the original builders and audiences would think of the dynamic destination Playhouse Square has become today. One thing is certain: our next century is off to a brilliant start and we are so glad you are a part of it.
