Although “The Brake Man” was founded in 1993, there is 40 years of brake design and development experience found here. Warren Gilliland, the President, began his career in the brake industry back in 1967 when he joined Airheart Products Inc., then the undisputed industry leader in high performance brake systems. Already an experienced designer, it was here that Warren met Frank Airheart, Vice President of Engineering at Airheart Products. Like father to son, Frank the mentor, and Warren the protégé, came several innovative and, at the time, new ventures. One of these was a new series of quick change calipers that are the forerunners of those still used in the industry today. The pads created for that series of calipers, the 2” midget and sprint pad, the 4” drag and rear midget pad, and the 4 3/4” pad found on everything from the rear of a sprint car to the rear of a Winston Cup car, are still the most popular pad shapes in racing. Vitually every other quick change caliper made in the Untied States has used this original series of calipers as its inspiration. The brake pads and mountings have become industry standards. Other joint efforts of Frank and Warren were, the caliper used on the original BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) trains in San Francisco, the Disneyland Autopia Cars and Parade Floats, and numerous different performance vehicles from Snowmobiles to Indy Cars. In 1969, Hurst Performance purchased Airheart. Frank’s brother, Bob Airheart, the company Sales Manager, was promoted to the same position with the parent company, and Warren was chosen to replace Bob. This exposure to the professional methods of sales management provided by Bob Airheart, helped Warren quickly learn to help distributors produce results. In 1975, Warren left Hurst/Airheart, to join an automotive dealership as Service Manager, which allowed him the opportunity to understand and fulfill the needs of the retail public. It is here that many of his ideas for helping the end consumer were born. In 1986, he was asked to become the Sales Manager for JFZ Products Inc. In three short years he took them to the most prestigious position in the racing industry, not only because of the products, but because of the first class commitments to their dealer network. Among other innovations, a telephone tech hot line and seminars for the retail customers on site at their distributors were first made commonplace. Today, “The Brake Man”, supplies only the best brake related components available, through a first class dealer network to the end consumer. It’s not enough to have good products today. Now, the customer deserves the information and assistance to achieve the best results. In this catalog we explain the significant advantages of our unique, patented brake calipers and rotors. Think about it. The U.S. patent office does not hand out patents just because you would like one. They must be convinced you have something truly advanced. The information here will prove we are miles ahead of the competition, not only in design but functionality for huge improvements in driveability. We are setting new standards. Our products represent significant breakthroughs and for that reason, will be the company everyone else looks to for leadership. If quality and performance are what you are looking for, then you have come to the right place! We are dedicated to that goal! As you browse through our site, keep in mind that the components shown here are leading edge technology, representing a whole advancement resulting in performance improvements never before possible. After all, “The Brake Man”, has been teaching and helping the racers for years. Who else would you call?

This catalog is special for us because it details the significant differences to our competitors calipers and rotors. These new parts are special in that the three largest calipers have a new patented fluid transfer system, covered under patent no. 5,515,948. In addition to this, they have several new features that racers have been hoping would be developed for several years. Our rotors are obviously unique and are already meeting with fantastic success. If lightweight rotors that truly work and are affordable is one of the items you want for your next car, then don’t miss reading this catalog. The new Hurricane Rotor, being manufactured under a joint agreement with Advanced Cooling Inc., represents the biggest improvement in vented rotor development in 30 years. lf you have been trying to find a source for reliable information on brake components and related items, you are in for a treat when you call The Brake Man, or any of our authorized distributors. Here, we not only supply you top quality, reliable products, but the information necessary to get the best results from each product. For example, our brake pads represent leading edge technology in the development of high torque, non asbestos brake pads. Not only do we supply high torque pads, but we achieve this torque without being abrasive and tearing up rotors. Because of our composition, we run cooler than our competitors, and most importantly, can give you solid advice on which pad compound is right for your application. The Brake Man • 2010 Master Catalog

Welcome to The Brake Man’s new 2010 Catalog!

3

Brake Caliper Introduction Since the early 70’s, the racing brake caliper has changed very little. Oh yes, it is prettier, machined for a cleaner fit and in many cases, powder coated to hide the flaws, but for the most part, they are bolt together aluminum halves that depend on the bolts holding the halves together for their strength. The Brake Man, however, has taken their 40 years of expertise, combined it with the many years of interaction with race drivers and crew chiefs to perfect the shortcomings of all the calipers on the market. We started with a clean piece of paper and the end result was a caliper so superior, it was awarded a patent by the U.S. Patent Office! (Patent no. 5,515,948) While our competitor’s discuss their “differential bores” and “special dynamic heat shields”, we will explain why these “patches” are not needed on a caliper from The Brake Man. They tell you about their “external crossover tubes”, we will explain a far better and safer way to transfer the fluid. Our three stages of caliper production!

The superiority of our Tornado™ calipers has been proven time and time again both on every form of race car commonly found in the U.S. and in independent dynamometer testing as well. The result has been the respect of all that have used it. Make no mistake. A good product can be improperly applied to a given vehicle. That is why we back up our products with the finest customer support found in the industry today. We offer our potential customers a challenge. Find a racer running components from The Brake Man and ask them their opinion of the product. If they have used the components and installed as we have instructed, you will be amazed at the results they will share. Our further challenge to you is to contact us with your particular application on the phone. In a one half hour conversation, we will prove to you we are a major step above everyone else you have ever contacted. Now spend some time with our catalog and review our advantages and especially our tech section for information you have never seen in another brake catalog. We have never found a brake problem we can’t fix. Remember, “The only thing we can’t stop is WINNING!”

F3 Tornado™ Narrow Ear Caliper The Tornado™ F3 Caliper by The Brake Man, is the same caliper as the F3 Wide Ear version, but with the same mount as the F4 larger caliper.

Many

sprint cars find this caliper a perfect combination of light weight and excellent clamping especially on less demanding tracks. It packages superior clamping force into the minimum available space yet still has all of the advantages of its bigger

brothers,

the F5 and F4.

If you are experiencing pedal drop and you think you are boiling your fluid, think

again. 9 out

of 10 cases we see is clear caliper flex caused by weak calipers opening up when

subjected to heat.

This causes the required volume of fluid to more than double resulting in pedal loss. You will never have that with any of the calipers from The Brake Man. In fact, we recommend that our customers run at least a 1/16” smaller master than they do now to pick up improved pedal effort. We don’t need fluid volume, we just need higher pressures. 3.5 mount, (designed by us 40 years ago) will replace any of our competitor’s calipers of this similar size or with the larger F4 caliper with major improvements in performance.

F4 Tornado™ Caliper The TornadoTM F4 caliper by The Brake Man has no equal for it’s size. This caliper has won more championships in more forms of racing than any of our other calipers. The patented design features contribute to the lowest flex of any caliper in the industry; which eliminates pad taper and “wedging”. Driver feedback i s exceptional and pad release is immediate. The quality of materials and standard hard coating means the calipers will last much longer than any other system with only routine maintenance. We have racers running in tough dirt conditions that have the same set of calipers almost 10 years old! The applications for this caliper are not limited to any particular form of motorsports. Available in the standard 3.5” mounting we developed in the 60’s and also in new multi 6” to 7” mounting patterns for even more interchangeability.

F5 Tornado™ Caliper The TornadoTM F5 caliper by The Brake Man is our flagship caliper, designed specifically to meet the most demanding applications

and

the most extreme temperatures. The

same

patented

features as our other Tornado calipers, sized for the maximum in brake torque and thermal capability. Ideal for NASCAR, Trans-Am, GT/Prototype road and endurance racing, or heavy off-road applications such as Trophy Trucks. The large pad swept area and almost 1” of pad thickness provide outstanding heat dissipation and wear. An even thicker 1.10” pad is available for 24 hour or 1000 mile races. The F5 uses a standard 5.25” mounting pattern.

Thunder Storm Calipers Thunder Storm was specifically designed to meet the needs of classes that require OEM type calipers. We incorporate some of the same technology of TornadoTM series calipers. Crisp, clean release, reduced brake drag, and dependability in a legal OEM casting. We blueprint select castings to a specific bore size, and then hard-coat them for long life and corrosion resistance. Our proprietary piston and seal design maximize pad retraction. All calipers are thoroughly pressure and soak tested. Don’t be fooled by cheap aluminum caliper copies, their deflection will reduce your horsepower and handling with excessive drag. Thunder Storm calipers are available for GM Standard, GM Metric, and Legends applications.

General Note for All of The Brake Man’s Pad Compounds All of The Brake Man’s pads have been pre-cured to ensure consistent brake performance through their specific given range. Temperatures for racing pads and rotors should be monitored to make the proper decision regarding pads selection. Street pads should be selected by purpose using the description listed above. Remember one size does not fit all. The same is true of brake pad compounds. Understanding the purpose of the vehicle will help to determine the pad most suited to meet the need. 24

Asphalt Brake Systems

road and oval track racing place higher demands on brake components than any other form of Motorsports. Higher temperatures and longer duration events mean the benefits of a properly designed system are greatly magnified. The rigidity of the TornadoTM calipers at extreme temperatures has been proven to be much higher than competitor’s all-aluminum systems costing thousands of dollars more. By providing a firm and consistent pedal feel that does not change with temperature; lap times drop as the driver is able to focus on line and position without constantly adjusting the brakes or fighting pedal drop. Eliminating brake drag allows the car to rotate through the turns more efficiently and transition from corner to corner more smoothly. The wide variety of pavement race vehicles and their needs are matched by our wide range of calipers, pad compounds, and rotor types; ensuring the racer has a system ideal for their specific application. Our calipers and components are proven winners in many disciplines of road and oval track racing, listed below are some basic outlines of the systems available. Things such as piston size, pad compound, and rotor size can all be specified to provide the maximum potential in brake torque output and driver feel. In some applications our extremely lightweight Molycarbide rotors can be utilized for the lowest unsprung and rotating weights. We recommend our Xtreme6 racing brake fluid for all pavement applications.

Dirt Track, Sprint Car Our complete sprint car system provides the

ultimate in light weight and brake torque. Patented TornadoTM calipers and Revolution rotors and our own pad compounds can be matched to suit your specific set of needs. Our research with SAE engineers shows a gain of up to 40 horsepower to the ground in a 360 application by eliminating brake drag. This also allows the car to rotate through the center of the corner more efficiently and pick up the throttle sooner. The extremely rigid calipers eliminate pedal drop caused by caliper deflection, giving the driver a firm, consistent pedal throughout the race. Engine size, Track type, Wing/ Non-Wing, Driver needs; all are taken into consideration when selecting the proper components for each application. We do not have a one-size-fits-all approach to proper brake selection. Piston size, rotor size, and pad compound can be selected to give you the ultimate in brake torque and pedal feel, while maintaining extremely light weight. Our championship winning components will last much longer than any other manufacturer’s even under the most severe conditions.

Our basic Sprint system consists of the following

classes; more and more racers are discovering how important and how much of a gain a properly functioning brake system is. Our Championship winning dirt late model system uses four F4 Tornado calipers, four Revolution lightweight rotors, Brake Man pads, residual valves, stainless lines, and pad wear spacers. This system will fit every popular hub available. By eliminating brake drag, we not only reduce temperatures, we also eliminate the mid-corner push so prevalent in this form of

As horsepower and speeds continue to increase in the open classes, and with the parity introduced with the Crate Motor

racing. Allowing the car to rotate through the center of the turn freely lets the amount of stagger and caster split be reduced in the setup. The rigidity of the calipers eliminates late-race pedal drop, and gives much more modulation and feel to the driver under braking on entry. The Revolution rotors provide a large increase in un-sprung and rotating weight while still being thermally capable of withstanding hard use. Quality of design and materials also gives us much longer component service life. Calipers are available with -3AN or -4AN inlet fittings to suit your chassis.

Dirt Modified Our extremely successful

Dirt Modified brake systems are available in several configurations, utilizing a wide range of our calipers and rotors. The large number of different tracks, series and regulations, chassis types, and engine sizes dictate that several options are available to the user rather than a single one-size-fits-all system. As with all of our systems, they can be ordered to suit your exact braking requirements. Our patented TornadoTM calipers offer greater and more consistent brake torque than any other caliper. Zero-drag design eliminates cornering push and delivers more power to the ground. The modular design drastically reduces the number of spares necessary and allows the system to be easily switched as requirements dictate, while the hard coat finish and optional ceramic coating will stand up to years of the toughest dirt and track prep chemicals. We have several modified racers who have been using the same brake calipers for more than 9 years with only routine maintenance. Revolution and ProCast rotors are put through our proprietary thermal process which greatly increases life and thermal resistance. There are so many available options with caliper type and size, rotor configuration, and pad compound; we recommend following the basic outlines below or contacting The Brake Man for assistance with your application 1) Standard. again been proven with the proliferation of our products throughout the top levels of drag racing. Constantly increasing speeds create a demand for components that deliver the ultimate in performance and safety, while keeping weight as low as possible. Our nitromethane racers are replacing outdated dual caliper per wheel systems with a single F3 caliper per wheel and seeing a huge increase in stopping power and modulation. F3 calipers and carbon fiber pads can stop a Funny Car from 300 MPH safely without a parachute. The rigidity of the caliper and the zero-drag design allow the calipers to release instantly and cleanly, which lowers both reaction times and sixty foot times, while also improving consistency. Rotors - Information General Information Contrary to popular belief, the brake rotor does not stop the car. The caliper provides the clamping force and uses the rotor as a lever. The mass of the rotor is dictated by the heat dissipation requirements which are a factor of how the vehicle will be used. Since calipers from The Brake Man have much more clamping force than those from other manufacturers, and since the caliper is the only zero drag caliper on the market, the rotor will not see nearly as much heat. Therefore, we can reduce rotating weight without harming the system output. The diameter of the rotor is also dictated by the capability of the caliper to provide clamping force. If your caliper deflects, then you will need to “patch” your system by running a larger rotor which also means running a larger wheel and tire. This is why we provide a large cross section of rotors to fit all applications. As with everything we make, our technical information is only a telephone call away.

Revolution Rotors In 1995, one of the top sprint car crew chiefs, Gary “Deuce” Turrill, said that the drag race rotors he was using on the inboard rear of his sprint car would only last one or two races. We could design a rotor that would handle the heat without distortion and from this came the “Revolution” rotor. For over a decade, we have proven to countless users that we have the only convoluted rotor that will survive the demands of the racing community. Our special thermal treatment costs a little more but provides many years of durable use without requiring replacement. Just ask anyone who runs our parts. We make them to last! We start with high quality steel, put the material in just the right place and then treat the material to remove the internal stresses. The result is the most effective lightweight rotor on the market today. Almost always, the first question out of a racer’s mouth is: How much does it weigh? While they are not as light as titanium, you will get 80% of the weight reduction for a fraction of the price. As for cast aluminum, they can’t begin to take the heat! There is no other product on the market that can match the performance of the Revolution. It is important to remember that the type of racing, driver style, track shape, top speed and weight of the race car all go into determining what rotor is right for you. If you are not sure what you need, call us!

NOTICE! BEWARE OF COPYCATS! This rotor has been specifically designed to reduce warpage to a flat plate steel rotor. For many years, racers have been using steel rotors, especially on sprint car rears and on drag race cars, but they had a tendency to “bellmouth” or “dish” within one or two nights of use. We specifically designed the “Revolution” not to warp. It is because of a proprietary blend of design, material and processing that we accomplished our goal. Now, other companies have attempted to copy the design but never get it right. They tried to make them cheap, but we made them work. If you don’t have to replace it, the better product is certainly worth more!

Rotors - Procast

Our cast rotors are made and treated for long life just like our Revolution Rotors. We start with a high quality casting and thermally treat them to deal with the extreme use that racing requires. They are available in most popular sizes for motorsport applications. These are also used in our Storm street systems.

Rotor Hats Our forged aluminum rotor hats are extremely strong yet lightweight. Hats are available in several rotor bolt patterns; virtually any offset, center hole, and stud pattern can be manufactured. Coated with the same durable finish as our TornadoTM calipers.

Rotors - Hurricane Hurricane Rotors The “Hurricane” Rotor represents the latest technology available in heat dissipation. Designed by an aircraft engineer specializing in heat dissipation, this rotor has no equal in temperature reduction for extreme temperature and duration applications. The Hurricane Rotor has been the choice of such racers as Peter Mohrhauser, GT1 perennial top 5 car and 2006 June Sprints winner and was the rotor of choice for the brake package tested by Morgan McClure racing on their “Car of Tomorrow” at Virginia International Raceway. Ward Burton, the driver remarked that the system from The Brake Man was the “best brakes he ever had on a race car”. The Hurricane Rotor is the most efficient heat dissipating rotor ever designed. When combined with the “Tornado” calipers from “The Brake Man”, you have the most efficient brake package available today. The Hurricane is protected under U.S. patent 5,626,211

Cyclone Rotors The technology and unparalleled heat dissipation of the Hurricane rotor has now been adapted in our lightweight convoluted design. For serious street or specific racing applications. Limited sizing available

3 Compound For those severe duty conditions encountered on production cars being run on hard braking tracks,

or cars being driven by drivers whose style demands the most from the brake system, we have made our championship winning #3 race compound available for calipers on most OEM performance vehicles. The #3 can handle temperatures up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, while the coefficient of friction stays high (approximately .48) and is very consistent throughout the temperature range. This pad is a favorite of track day drivers, autocross racers, and road racers who must use OEM calipers. The outstanding modulation of the #3 allows drivers to gauge exactly how much brake they are applying, and the consistent torque output allows drivers to use the same entry point lap after lap. We stock #3 pads for all popular performance vehicles, and can custom make pads on request. Call or contact your local dealer for assistance.

#

91 & #93 Compound

Developed as part of our Superbrakes package, these compounds are ideal for spirited performance street driving. They provide an increase in torque output, feel, and temperature capability without the compromises of a racing brake pad that is unsuitable for daily use. The #93 compound is a performance semi-metallic compound with good bite and temperature characteristics; it can be used for spirited street or short duration/ effort track events. Performance increases as temperatures rise up to the 900 degrees Fahrenheit ceiling. The #91 is a quality ceramic compound that has no noise and little to no dust. It is ideal for OEM vehicles looking for an increase in brake performance but will not see track use.

Brake Fluid

Our fluid has been specially designed to meet the extreme conditions found in professional competition. With a dry boiling point of 577 degrees, and a wet boiling point of 300 degrees, it beats the competition, and does it for a third of the cost of the others. In order to buy a better fluid, you will spend over $25.00 a quart. Remember, what you purchase should match the job. Our brake fluid does just that by offering high temperature resistance, with the quality necessary to make sure that it lasts a long time! It is packaged in 12 oz bottles to keep it fresh and is economical so that you can freshen the brake system as we recommend, before every race, for best results.

Super Brakes & popular applications

Finally there is a true upgrade for your stock brake system. Super Brakes are a complete thermally processed replacement rotor and pre cured pad upgrade that not only increases your rotor life up to 5 times more than what you are currently experiencing, but also increases your overall braking performance by as much as 30%. The Brake Man has adapted technology gained from almost 40 years of racing experience and applied it to your street vehicle’s stock brake components.

Originally designed and extensively tested for Emergency, Government, and Fleet vehicles, SuperBrakes are now available for virtually any application including the newest factory vehicles. Ideal for trucks that see heavy usage and towing, or street performance vehicles, or vehicles that have been extensively modified with larger wheels and tires or suspension; Our Innovative Brake Technology is a direct replacement for your factory components, requiring no modifications. Several pad compounds are designed to meet the needs of different applications and environments. In stock for all domestic and most imported trucks, and available for most passenger car vehicles

Storm Brake Systems & popular applications

use the same race proven components as our motorsport applications, adapted for street use and using a high performance street pad compound. All systems are completely modular, and switching over to track use is as easy as changing brake pads. These systems provide a vast increase in brake torque and pedal modulation and in most cases save weight over the factory components. Our brake systems do not interfere with any ABS or vehicle stability systems. The hard-coat finish on the calipers is durable enough for daily driving, for the most severe weather conditions we recommend our optional ceramic coating. Storm systems include TornadoTM calipers, ProCast or Revolution rotors, Brake Man brake pads in a compound of your choice, residual pressure valves, stainless steel braided brake lines, brackets and mounting hardware*. Custom Storm systems are available on a special order basis; please call with your requirements. Production based race vehicles use the same Storm systems as their street counterparts with caliper, pad, and rotor requirements to suit the application. * Some systems may not use all the components listed above; this will be noted in the individual system description. * Some systems may require minor modification for fitment: this will be noted in the individual system description NOTE: We recommend the installation of residual pressure valves in all of our brake systems unless otherwise noted ACURA BMW Integra M3 E30 NSX M3 E36 M3 E46 Mini Cooper and S

General Information NEVER USE DOT 5 SILICONE FLUID! It has several totally unacceptable characteristics for auto racing. We have tested many of the available silicone fluids always with the same results, brake failure. Silicone expands at elevated temperatures, which causes a spongy pedal. This expansion can be so severe that total system brake lockup can result. Some silicone fluids can attack seals in your system, so the wise choice is to stay with Dot 3 or 4 fluids or Dot 5.1 fluids. For most dirt track racers and IMCA racers our 577 Fluid is a combination of an excellent fluid at an affordable price It has a dry boiling point of 577 degrees Fahrenheit, and 300 degrees wet boiling point. Since brake fluid is hygroscopic, it absorbs moisture. When it is new, before moisture is absorbed, it boils at the dry boiling point. As it accumulates moisture, its boiling point drops to the 300 degree mark. Since the brake fluid can only absorb approximately 2% moisture, it stops here. The problem is, that you will experience sponginess when your brake fluid becomes overheated. Total brake loss can result. This is why you should flush a fresh bottle of brake fluid before each racing event you attend. One bottle of our fluid before the event will give you a great brake pedal all night. Our extreme 6 fluid is a Dot 5.1 fluid that has excellent compressibility and low moisture retention, making it your best choice for affordabillity on race cars that run asphalt and road race. Once again, value for your money is the key. If you don’t use a good fluid you have created a major problem for any brake components to perform well.

BRAKE PEDAL RATIOS: In order to have the best brakes possible, it is absolutely necessary to combine the ideal pedal ratio with the proper bore size master cylinders. Whether you are using a single master cylinder, or dual master cylinders on a balance bar, the basic following concepts apply. Using the illustration at the right, take your pedal measurements and calculate the pedal ratio. Distance “A”, divided by distance “B” is your ratio. Measure your “A” distance to the center of the pedal. A ratio of about 6/1 is ideal for most racing If your ratio is higher, you will develop a higher line pressure for the same amount of imput effort, but you will pay for it with a longer pedal travel. To decrease the pedal travel, you can: 1. Use a larger master cylinder, 2. Use a pedal with a lower ratio. Either way, you will have to push harder to develop the same line pressure. It is up to you what you want the most, short travel or ease of pedal effort. The combinations of pedal ratios and master cylinder bore sizes are endless, but the most common combination as are as follows: 1. Most asphalt race cars, 6/1 pedal ratio, 7/8” master cylinder for the front brakes, 1” master cylinder for the rear brakes. Our Tornado calipers allow you to run a 1/16” smaller master front and rear with no change in pedal travel. This will make the pedal far easier to push. 2. Most dirt race cars, 6/1 pedal ratio, 1” master cylinder for the front brakes, 7/8” master cylinder for the rear brakes. 3. Most 2 brake dirt sprint and midgets, 6/1 pedal ratio, 7/8” master cylinder. Try a 13/16” master with our brakes on a sprint car. 4. Most 3 brake dirt sprint and midgets, 7/1 pedal ratio, 1” bore master cylinder. If you have a special situation, feel free to call “The Brake Man”, any time for assistance. We have the answers!

General Information

Virtually every race car I check has the balance bar improperly adjusted. Keep in mind, that it works very much like a teeter totter, and if you want to be truly able to adjust your line pressures effectively, you must first adjust the assembly correctly. Here is the proper method: Before adjusting the bar, screw the heims into position on the balance rod, until they are the same distance apart as the master cylinders. The pushrods should be parallel to each other from the time they leave the masters until they hook to the heims on the balance rod. 1. Consider the master cylinder bore sizes and the caliper piston sizes and number. Determine which master cylinder will use the most stroke to fill the caliper. Remember…Use one size smaller masters with our calipers than with other brands. We don’t need the volume, we need the pressure. This is why our calipers will outperform everything else on the market! 2. Lengthen the pushrod on the master that will use the most stroke or shorten the pushrod on the one that will move the least, until you have the balance bar rod perfectly perpendicular to the pushrods while the pedal is being depressed. The balance rod will be at an angle but will be perpendicular to the pushrods and parallel to the firewall when it is properly adjusted Check for proper operation as follows: 1. Install your pressure gages into the bleed screw port of the caliper. (If you don’t have gages, see page 9. Brake bias gages are essential to “tuning” the brake system. If you prefer dash mount gages, be sure to use a shut off valve, so that they can be shut off during the race. We highly suggest that you do not use in dash gages. They rob pedal travel and should not be used during races.) Dial the gage to the left and measure the pressure front and rear, with the front gage holding on 1000 psi. Dial to the right, 3-4 turns and measure again. This will tell you how much pressure differentiation you can count on during the race. Record your front and rear pressures after the race is over, so you will know where to start next time. Refer to the Chart.

BRAKE SYSTEM INSTALLATION TIPS: 1. Mount calipers square to the rotor in a position recommended by the manufacturer for proper bleeding. Remember, if you weld a bracket in place, the weld will cause the bracket to draw, which will make the caliper sit cocked over the rotor. If your outer pad contacts on the bottom, and your inner pad hits on the top of the rotor, your bracket has drawn over the rotor and needs attention. Brackets must be parallel to rotor within .020. Caliper must be centered on rotor, so that new pads will easily fit into both sides. 2. Mount master cylinders in a bracket that has adequate cross bracing, so that no movement takes place, even when depressed as hard as during actual race conditions. Mount masters as high as possible. A system will bleed easier when fluid moves downhill. Always use a master that has a sealed diaphragm to keep air away from the brake fluid.

The Brake Man • 2009 Master Catalog

BALANCE BARS

3. If residual valves are to be used,( they should always be used with our calipers), mount to the end of the master cylinder where they are obvious. If you mount elsewhere, they are easy to forget and they should be checked for proper operation regularly. If you use them, never more than 2 pounds on a disc brake or 10 pounds on a drum brake. 4. Route brake lines to run downhill from the master cylinder to the calipers. Avoid sharp bends or loops as this will create natural air traps. Keep flex line as short as possible. Use 3/16” solid and flex lines to keep pedal hard and firm. Never use Teflon line for plumbing a race car. It does not like heat, repeated bending, ages poorly and has no place in a professionally built car. 5. Bleed brake system with racing fluid only. Do not use standard automotive fluids as their boiling points are not sufficient for the strain of competition. Never buy DOT 3 or 4 brake fluid in bottles larger than one pint. The moisture in a half used bottle can contaminate the remaining fluid! 6. Avoid proportioning valves whenever possible. They only take away brake performance, they never increase it. Other methods of decreasing brake effort are: a. Mechanical balance bar with a larger master cylinder to lower line pressure. (the surface area of the master cylinder is a linear function measured in inverse proportion, that is, the smaller the master, the higher the line pressure. b. Smaller master cylinder piston sizes creates higher line pressure, allowing us to use a wider range of friction materials. The methods listed above will give better repeatability to the race car than running pressure through an orifice of a proportioning valve. Consistency is the key to winning! Area of the pistons on one side of the rotor have a direct effect on brake torque. That is, the bigger the pistons the greater the torque. c. Using different compound pads available from The Brake Man on the different axles. The consistency of the coefficient of friction allows this to be done only with our pads. The methods listed above will give better repeatability to the race car than running pressure through an orifice of a proportioning valve. Consistency is the key to winning!
