Les Enfants Terribles
Celebrate their 10th Fringe anniversary at pleasance
2001
Director Oliver Lansley founds Les Enfants Terribles. Contrary to popular belief, the company is not at all French; the name comes from Steven Berkoff whose nickname the ‘Enfant Terrible’ of theatre aligns with the company’s own attitudes towards theatre. Berkoff’s play West was the company’s first production, running first at The Space in Docklands.

Germinator marks Les Enfants Terribles’ return to Edinburgh and 2003 The their first piece of new writing and performance by director Oliver. with a weighty reputation for stunning visual theatrics, the 2004 Now company bring Oliver Lansley’s Bedtime Stories to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
2005
Oliver’s black comedy Immaculate arrives at Gilded Balloon before heading South to London’s Old Red Lion, and eventually to both national and international touring. Published by Nick Hern, the script recently reached Samuel French’s Top 10 Bestseller list.
The Infant - currently being re-produced at Pleasance - follows in 2006 the footsteps of Immaculate, running in Edinburgh before touring internationally to great acclaim.
2007
Perhaps Les Enfants Terribles’ most iconic piece, and its near namesake, The Terrible Infants arrives at Pleasance. Ever since its Pleasance opening, the show has toured internationally, picking up countless accolades along the way.

DRUNKEN DISASTERS Jemma McDonnell and Kylie Walsh from The Paper Birds share boozy stories ahead of their production, Thirsty. “I remember carrying a girl home. I remember eating a burger and chips but not catching the bus home. I can’t remember how I got that cut, or where it was I lost my phone. I don’t remember sending the email but I can remember the fall out. Where’s that ice bucket from and how did I get it out of the club?” We’re sitting in a rehearsal room in Leeds surrounded by sheets of A4 paper. Printed on them are some of the most candid, funny, unsettling and occasionally shockingly frank tales we’ve ever come across. We asked you to send us your drink related stories, and so you did. And here we are, reading, laughing, gasping and trying to take it all in.
“I ended up in my bra and then realised I was the only person without clothes on.”
Some of you drink a lot, and some not much at all. We inevitably begin to compare your answers with our own. How do we fare? Are we drinking too much? Or can we feel a bit smug about how sensible we are? Kylie’s face appears from behind a pile of questionnaires: I drink a lot more than that. She doesn’t look entirely happy about it. “I had a uni house party with everyone from my course. I got the drunkest and was told we were playing a game called strip 21…a game they invented which it’s apparently impossible not to lose. I ended up in my bra and then realised I was the only person without clothes on. They took photos…they are on Facebook (UNTAG!)” We’re looking for some answers. We’re hoping that somewhere in these tales of lost phones and memory blanks and bruised knees we might discover something about you,
and about us, too. We seem to find the most interesting insights not in the half remembered anecdotes about spilled pints and falling down, but in your reflections on why you do it… “We’re a breed unto ourselves, it’s like we have been starved - of what I’m not sure- fun or attention or laughter or just the ability to move. We want to move, we want to make noise, LOTS of noise, we want to scream from the roof-tops and from the streets, we want to dance and throw ourselves about, throw ourselves at other people and throw ourselves onto the floor, a frantic army, a rebellion, a protest, a celebration, an excuse to
implode, to explode, - to be noticed by someone (maybe just the person next to you) maybe by yourself- yeah, noticing yourself.” What is it about drinking? Why do we love it SO much? Do we love it too much? Or should we stop worrying and go to the pub? Ours is a pint, if you’re offering. And if you’ve had too much to drink, why not ring The Paper Birds ‘Drunk Hotline’ on 07758451152, but please be warned, your drunken message may well feature in the show! Retraction retraction: Dan from the Real Macguffins is Single
The Pleasance Times on Saturday published that Jim from The Real MacGuffins ‘went to [Dan’s] wedding’. In fact, the reverse is true. Yesterday, The Pleasance Express corrected the error erroneously, stating that Jim ‘isn’t [married] and is looking for love’. To offer a final correction, Dan from The Real MacGuffins is actually completely single and awaits your offer or invite.
