SUPPORTING NEW TALENT The Pleasance is committed to encouraging, supporting and promoting new talent. A huge number of the big names so popular at the Fringe now have received support from the Pleasance early on in their career. The Charlie Hartill Fund is a primary contributor to this commitment to supporting new talent. The purpose of the Fund is to provide financial support so that the writers, directors, technicians, producers and performers of the future might have an opportunity to hone their talents. Since the Special Reserve began, a total of £65,000 has been raised. There are three shows in the 2010 programme being supported by the Charlie Hartill fund: The Comedy Zone; Territory; and The Meeting. These could well be the stars of the future...

TERRITORY
After a sell out Fringe 2009, Territory returns to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as part of their 2010 UK tour. The play observes a group of young boys spending an evening in the local woods. When one of the boys brings his older, successful brother to join them the status within the group is tested. While some characters are open to the idea of change and interested in leading a successful life others feel threatened and begin to cause trouble. With varied characters, a dramatic narrative, fast-paced dialogue and subtly intertwined morals the play is perfect for a young audience. REDISCOVERING HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN Hans Christian Andersen died 135 years ago this week, leaving behind some of the world’s bestloved stories; yet it seems many of us hardly know them at all... After a hit debut last year, contemporary storyteller Rachel Rose Reid is back with us at Pleasance with a bittersweet new show that repatriates Andersen from Disneyland to the dark grown-up place where he belongs.
Rachel explains: ‘Andersen wrote The Little Mermaid whilst staying on an island, avoiding the wedding of the person he loved; so the original doesn’t have so many singing lobsters, but beneath it lies something far more gripping. Throughout his tales there’s an Angela Carter-esque undercurrent of love and loss, frustration and desire – which is a side so often obscured for us by
the sugar-coated Andersen of popular imagination’. Collaborating with double Fringe First winner Phillip Breen (The Stefan Golszewski plays, Tom Basden’s ‘Party’), Rachel weaves through Andersen’s life and her own: ‘Andersen took fairytales, conversations, experiences and his own diaries, and twisted them into fresh new work, so it makes sense to follow suit; especially when one look at Grazia Magazine will tell you we are perhaps more sold on the idea of a happy

INTERVIEW: PAUL GARNER THE MAN BEHIND THE MURALS The Pleasance is many different things to many people. To designer Paul Garner, Pleasance is a an enormous gallery for his artwork. When did you first work for the Pleasance? In 1997 I was invited to do a design upgrade of the courtyard, including the original totem pole. Up until then it had been very pretty of course, but it hadn’t really had any sort of identity. In that first year I remember the night before we opened the crew in the courtyard going “wow”. It had all come together. Its been a gradual spiral – year on year we’ve just added more stuff. How long does it all take to make? For the Pleasance I usually work probably
about two months of the year because obviously there’s quite a run up for all this. Doing all the artwork for the brochure and all the other festival publicity. Then we have a mad few days up here trying to get things ready. Which piece of artwork are you most proud of? The murals in Pleasance Dome were such a massive undertaking. This is now their fifth anniversary. I made them ten times smaller, and then they were blown up to size. I couldn’t believe it when they first went up. It was spectacular. Leading up to the deadline I went three days without sleep, but we eventually got it up on time. All credit to the crew for hanging them all so quickly too!
Who is the dog? The original dog was Brooke, who belonged to Pleasance founder Christopher Richardson, now replaced by Indie (who looks fairly identical.) The dog just sort of caught on as a mascot for the Pleasance. Whenever I can’t think of anything to put in I just use the dog! Paul is an artist, designer, illustrator, publisher… jack of all trades! www.gawkagogo.com
(ABOVE) Look out for Paul Garner’s selfportrait. Why not grab a coffee in the Pleasance Dome cafe and play ‘name the caricature’? It’s a challenge! (LEFT) Paul’s totem pole has well and truly become a Fringe icon.

TALKING TELLY Television continuity announcing – what could possibly go wrong? Watch out for pronunciation: It’s been known for ‘and next we have the pick of the properties’ to become ‘the prick of the poperties’. Watch for typos: An extra letter in an announcement can get you into trouble, ‘Another body of evidence for Trevor Eve now in Waking the Dead’ can’t afford to have an accidental ‘n’ thrown into ‘waking’. Think ahead: Saying ‘Find out how to make your scones look like Fanny’s…
building bricks; and more! Staff are all fully qualified and will be happy to help kids make the most of the great toys, or just relax on a bean-bag away from the hubbub of the festival. Find Love Make Love Die Pleasance Dome 5-30 Aug, (Not 16, 23) 14:30
Dear Mr & Mrs Pegg, I am writing to you to discuss some issues that have arisen at your daughter’s school. It has come to my attention that Alice has become, according to her teachers, ‘detached and despondent’ in class: she has stopped communicating understandably, choosing instead to merely ‘growl’ at others. Furthermore, her pupils are often dilated and she has reportedly begun to ‘froth at the mouth’. Mrs Valentine, the school nurse, assures me that this is simply a side-effect of adolescence; but I personally fear that it may be more serious than this. I must stress that, no matter what has caused this change in your daughter’s attitude, her behaviour cannot continue like this. We have not seen Alice in a few days; although some Fanny Craddock is up next’ students have reported seeing her in the school grounds, apparently harassing other students, and even teachers. might be misconstrued! And whatever you do, I would like to reiterate that this will not be tolerated at don’t declare your undying this school and, if her behaviour does not improve, she love for your ex-boyfriend may be excluded. It should be noted that other students have been live on air, like Faith does observed acting in a similar fashion; as well as some in the Hub, a hilarious comedy play about five of the teachers. Be assured that we will treat all such continuity announcers incidents with equal severity. trying not to say the wrong Yours sincerely, thing. Hub Mr. B.
