TIME FOR A NEW FURNANCE? Investing in a furnance with better technology and efficientcy will save you hudreds of dollars every year.
W
hen a furnace loses or wastes heat, it requires more energy to keep your home warm. Some furnaces lose heat through the walls of the furnace cabinet. Energy-efficient furnaces like Ruud’s full line of state-of-the-art models significantly reduce this loss with a blanket of insulation that lines the inside of the cabinet walls. Heating is the largest energy expense in most homes, accounting for 3550 percent of annual energy bills in colder parts of the country, according to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy.

MOOD Magazine · October 2016
When a gas furnace is not in operation, most send a steady, wasteful draft of warm household air up the venting system and out the roof. Some newer furnances, offered by Rheem feature an blower that keeps warm air in the ducts, meaning you don’t get that initial blast of cold air when your system cycles back on. Pilot lights also can be wasteful. A furnace with an electrtonic eliminates the need for a constantly burning pilot. Newer furnaces with electronic ignition systems have an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of 94 percent or higher and can run up to 15 percent more efficiently than standard models.
The most efficient furnaces tap the energy of the hot vent gases – which can reach temperatures of 500 degrees Fahrenheit, and more. A high-efficiency furnace generally has a higher price tag, but it can make up the difference by reducing operating costs over the long run. And with today’s consumer interest in efficiency, such equipment enhances the bottom line of your home.

SMART HOME
Regular maintenance of your heating and cooling system is generally about $100 that can save you thousands on the long run.
CATCH PROBLEMS EARLY You won’t think about going two or three years without havings maintenance on your car. Well, your HVAC system needs expert care too.
Semi-Annual Maintenance Rheem HVAC contractors offer important seasonal HVAC tune-ups. In southern states it may be another check of your A/C system, while in the north, a furnace inspection is a must before a long, cold winter. There are many different types of heating
and cooling systems and each one has different needs. However, there are some basic inspections and tests that should be done twice annually no matter what type of system you have, said Ed Lightner, the product support manager at Rheem. “The first thing is that the technician should talk to the homeowner about any concerns they have,” Lightner said. Other tips to get the most out of your inspection:
• Make sure the technician first checks your indoor air filters to ensure proper air flow (this is the most common problem for heating and cooling issues) • The system should be run through its full cycle and power on and off • Air flow and temperature should be measured • They should check the connections and duct work for leaks • If you have an inside unit, make sure nothing is blocking the air intake • Connections and wiring should be checked on electric heaters
Dirty and cloffed filters are one of the main reasons your HVAC system works harder to heat or cool your home, putting greater strain on the motor.

DUCTS IN A ROW
30% of your heating or cooling could be leaking out of your house before it gets inside
Ductwork is typically located in areas you couldn’t care less about, such as the attic, crawl spaces, the basement, and the garage.
to lung cancer and respiratory illnesses. Click here for an article from the EPA in regards to the effects of poor indoor air quality.
Recent studies show that an anywhere from 10% - 30% of an average units output is wasted due to duct leakage and that sealing up your duct work can cut this waste to less than 5% if done correctly.
Did you also know that sealing up your ductwork can actually helps the environment? Most of the energy we use in our homes comes from the burning of fossil fuels at power plants, which contributes to smog, acid rain and global warming.
Improperly sealed ductwork can have a direct affect on your health. Not only is duct leakage an enormous waste of energy, but it also allows for unconditioned, dirty air to be pulled back in causing a whole host of problems you might have never thought of. Aside from hindering your HVAC systems ability to heat and cool, this air can introduce dangerous dusts, molds, microbes and even radon gas into your space. This is such case that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency attributes ductwork leakage as a measurable contributor
In short, the less energy we use to condition our homes, the less air pollution we generate, so by sealing up your ductwork and reducing the amount of energy necessary to comfortably heat or cool your space, you can directly fight global warming and reduce air pollution. It’s a win-win situation since you save money AND help the environment.

HOME GENERATORS
BRIEFS
Home Power Homeowners are turning to powerful generators for comfort and safety
500,000 American households lose their power every day Installation of home generations, the kind that power your entire home during power outages, is skyrocketing in the U.S. These are not the gas-spewing portable generators. These run quietly asnd are wired the the electrical system in your home.
Homeowners are installing these power systems in new and exising homes.
This is certainly not a DIY project. Make sure your system is installed by a professional.
Home generators dect power outages and kick on automatically. When power is restored, they turn back off. They can run anything from a refrigerator to you A/C and furnace.
Rheem sells top-of-theline generators and your contractor local Rheem contractor may be able to install it for you.
SMART MONEY
Two-thirds of new HVAC systems are financed. Many times through their own cost savings.
FIND REBATES Start by reviewing the Database of State Incentives for Renewable EnergyTM (www.dsireusa.org). This comprehensive website gives an
overview of a number of savings opportunities for all 50 states and U.S. terr tories. Check with your local utility providers.
The Rheem website gives helpful information on any state or federal tax credits as well as its Consumer CashBack program.
The majority of homeowners finance their new HVAC unit. And by offsetting the monthly payment with the energy savings, financing a new air-conditioning or heating system can be a lot less expensive than most people think. New system are 30% to 40% more
efficient. If the cost to finance a new HVAC system is $120 a month, that system could save you $60 or more, basically making half the monthly payment. With those savings and the lack of repairs, you ou may be able to recover your investment in about 5-7 years.

A
ccording to a 2014 survey of residential landscape architects by the American Society of Landscape Architects, one of the most popular features to fill that space is the outdoor kitchen. “Outdoor kitchens expand a homeowner’s opportunities to gather together with family and friends,” said Maria Stapperfenne, certified kitchen designer, certified bath designer and 2015 president of the National Kitchen & Bath Association. “However, just like indoor kitchens, outdoor kitchens must be designed thoughtfully.” Fall and winter are great times to use design and use your outdoor kitchen
for eneteraining. Even outside the mild souther states, portable fire pits and outdoor propane heaters can extend the use of your patio well into the winter months. Zoning it out Maximum enjoyment also comes when everything else is in its proper place, or zone. There are four zones in an outdoor kitchen - wet, cold, hot and dry. Faulk said getting these in the right combination makes prepping food, cooking and cleaning much easier. “Keep the cold zone next to the wet zone. This makes it easier to move things from the cold zone refrigerator to the wet zone sink to wash them off
FRESH INSPIRATION
and get them ready for the grill in the hot zone,” he added. Zones are especially important when a pool is nearby. “Keep the cold zone nearest to the pool,” said Faulk. “It will keep kids who want a cold drink from running past a hot grill.” A key to proper zoning is counter space. Grills should have a minimum of 24 inches of uninterrupted space to one side and 12 inches to the other. This gives the cook nearby room to place platters, cooking utensils and more. If there’s not room for that amount of counter space, “incorporate an open-shelf cabinet below. You get additional ‘counter space’ by being able to put things on shelves,” said Kelly. An outdoor kitchen is a long-term investment that will enhance a home. With the right planning behind it, homeowners and their guests can enjoy it for many years.
Garden furniture The days of wrought iron and picnic tables are over. Invest in weatherproof furniture with comfy cushions and colorful accessories.
Stay Warm In colder areas of the U.S., a fireplace or a portable propane heater can extend the use of your patio or deck by weeks or even months..
