All three of my girls (now 6, 4 & 3) will make their own mistakes and create their own opportunities as they grow up in the Truckee Meadows. They will experience how it has matured over the years both culturally and aesthetically. My family, childhood memories and the potential of what our area is growing into is the core of my motivation for creating this magazine The brand of our community and how we are portrayed through film, TV, blogs, etc. hinders our economic growth and the spirit within our community to tell a positive story about living here.

I was born in a Saint Mary’s room off 6th Street and grew up in east Sparks. This town is where my roots lie and where I plan to call home for a long time to come. It’s the community where I went down my first slide, felt the thrill of my first bike ride, shared my first kiss at Diedrichsen Elementary School and broke my wrist on a cattle drive outside Winnemucca.

Our mission is to spread the word about the positives of our community, allowing people to feel confident investing in us, traveling here and being a part of what the area has to offer. We focus on our local stories, heroes, scientists, non-profits, artists, teachers and leaders who seize opportunities that drive our economic engine. The Plum Influence Magazine is here to show the world what we are made of and the simple pleasures all around us. Reno/Tahoe is where my quality of life thrives, and I’m determined to protect it!

I learned how to drive my ’89 Mustang in the parking lot of Don Mellow Sports Complex and shortly after I wrecked it spinning beach donuts at Pyramid Lake (looking back, it wasn’t the best decision). Editor & Chief of Plum Influence Magazine Founder & CEO Plum11, Inc.

Our September Plum Influence Magazine is a special issue that has one main focus: to spotlight the 100 top influencers in our area who inspire us, challenge us, open our eyes to the power of charity, get us to think broader and bigger and those who change the game. The process of finding these 100 individuals was a multi-tiered format that goes beyond the “like us tactic on Facebook and vote for your favorite. It was a community nomination and collective effort to find the perfect fit for each of the ten categories. The ten categories go beyond the business savvy or politician focused; it is dedicated to the following people:

Foodies Beautiful Minds Scientists & Thinkers Artists & Icons Super Heroes Community Leaders Charity Drivers EXTRAordinary Risk-takers & Visionaries Economic Leaders & Industry Experts

Eve of a New Era

9-29-2012

Save the Date Celebrate the courage and character of the

Reno/Tahoe region with our community’s 100 Most Influential People. Sponsored by:

There is only one stop out of the 47 PGA FedEx Cup Tours sponsored by its community. A tourist funded city who understands the cause and effect of reaching millions of viewers in over two hundred countries in order to share its breath taking up all night nature unique to the Reno/Tahoe region. Leading the way are the eighty four members of the Reno Tahoe Open Renegades who ban together with thousand dollar checks in hand committed to preserving the future of this PGA destination. Working as a solid group these influential leaders raise awareness and donate resources in order to keep this gem a community funded effort.

“As one of Reno’s prominent events, not only has the RTO brought an elegance and prestige to our city over the years, but it has also added to our rich culture.” - Bob Cashell, Reno City Mayor and RTO Renegades Member

This upcoming event marks the 14th year of reaching millions and donating over two million dollars to local charities. The $3,000,000 dollar purse lures in big names and big crowds to our region.

It’s a powerful statement to the world when they see the Reno/Tahoe community stepping up and getting behind an organization the way the Renegades do each year. It would be an easier route to accept funds from a big corporation cash the check and sip mimosas under a shady hospitality tent…but that just isn’t our style.

“I’ve always enjoyed this tournament,” 2011 Winner Scott Piercy told an ESPN Golf reporter, “My family and I stay at Lake Tahoe and we just have a ball. The golf is a bonus this week for sure.”

The Peppermill Resort Spa and Casino is heating up green business practices by leveraging geothermal technology. This technology generates 100% of the Peppermill’s hot water heat source for the entire campus with a bonus effect of saving them 2.2 million dollars and counting. They have successfully reduced carbon emissions by 10,000 pounds and only depend on Nevada Energy for their kitchen’s natural gas needs. What most residents and visitors don’t know is the lush green grass that used to line Virginia and Lymberry was replaced with high quality artificial turf, saving 5,184,000 gallons of Truckee Meadows water per season! This step alone saved $18,000 on water bills and landscaping costs.

So where is the Peppermill headed with its energy efforts? As they continue to move forward, they plan to:

1. Replace the existing incandescent lighting to LED lights in one year. 2.Implement a clean energy unit called Power Shaver, which transforms dirty electrical power and converts it to clean power, potentially reducing annual electrical costs by $500,000 dollars. 3. Continue pursuing electrical savings and reviewing Binary electrical generation as a consideration by using geothermal steam.

Using a three to five year Rate of Return method, the Peppermill is leading the charge as a socially conscious business model, showing how you can save you big in the long-run! This upcoming November, the Peppermill will host the GRC convention, adding more good press and dollars to the Reno/ Tahoe area. The Peppermill provides tours of their geothermal operations to anyone who would like to see it.

Dean Parker, Peppermill’s Director of Facilities, points out the control system that monitors their geothermal activity.

CLEAN THE WORLD 9,000 children are directly affected by the Peppermill’s 500lbs of soap sent off every two weeks!

After you use your hotel soap once or twice, some hotels dispose of it, but local Casinos Harrah’s, Harvey’s and the Peppermill Resort Spa and Casino turn it into a lifesaving opportunity. Clean the World accomplishes its mission by collecting, sorting, and sanitizing discarded soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and gels from participating hospitality partners.

BLUE SKIES Celebrating the 300+ blue skies in our region the staff at Plum Influence Magazine wanted to lay out a typical Saturday in the Truckee Meadows. Stumbling around downtown isn’t how residents spend their days, we go exploring!

Clear Sky Morning: The solar powered Plum tour begins by pampering yourself with your favorite

cup of Joe then heading over to the Wilbur D. May Arboretum for a bike ride or a pleasant stroll.Your morning will become a rejuvenating oasis as you discover secret passages, sitting spots that melt you away and indigenous plant life.

High Noon: Picnic with the Pooch! Load your favorite furry friend, a leash, picnic goodies and a beach towel over to the Sparks Marina for some dog park bonding time. Watch dogs leap to catch frisbees and dive into their private waters. Work on your tan while enjoying the blue skies, sight seers, kids sipping on lemonade and motivated speed walkers.

Bring your glove it’s time for Aceball! Complete your day off with the crack of a bat, a classic beer and a hot dog finished by a firework display seen throughout downtown. Reno’s local AAA team brings in fans of all ages at affordable price ranges for an amazing event in the Frieght House District.

Reno, Nevada is much more than a gambling town. Our Biggest Little City is also a fly fisher’s paradise. Anglers from around the globe travel to fish the fertile waters of the Truckee River and Pyramid Lake. These watersheds are considered gems amongst the fly fishing community, and with good reason. The Truckee River is a gorgeous freestone stream with trophy class rainbow and brown trout scattered through its gradient drop. The Truckee River originates out of Lake Tahoe, and flows approximately 115 miles northeast before terminating at Pyramid Lake. Pyramid Lake is an inland sea, 40 miles north of Reno. Its alkali rich water is habitat to the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, the native trout of the Truckee River system. The world record cutthroat trout was caught at Pyramid Lake. The lake provides fly anglers with some of the best odds anywhere of catching a 10 lb. (or bigger) trout on the fly.

Big fish don’t come easy. The trophy fish that swim the Truckee River system and Pyramid Lake are not pushovers. They are smart, spooky, elusive fish. The best way to improve chances at catching these memorable fish is to hire longtime local fly fishing guide, Arlo Townsend. Arlo operates Arlo’s Fly Fishing Services, a year round, catch and release, fly fishing guide service on the Truckee River and Pyramid Lake. Arlo has been a full time guide for the past nine years. He provides experience, instruction, and all the gear! He caters to beginner through advanced anglers. Arlo takes the intimidation out of fly fishing, and thoroughly teaches the fundamentals of fly fishing in an easy going, easily understood manner. Advanced anglers can also improve their angling skills, learn new spots, and sharpen their techniques with a day on the water with Arlo. See www.arlosflyfishingservices.com for rates, contact info, fishing reports, and more.

Reno has one of the best fly fishing watersheds on the West Coast, and one of the best fly guides to go along with it. Check out Arlo’s Fly Fishing Services and make use of the spectacular fly fishing the Reno area has to offer.

LAKE TAHOE “Jewel of the Sierras” “At last the lake burst upon us a noble sheet of blue water lifted six thousand three hundred feet above the level of the sea, and walled in by a rim of snow-clad mountain peaks that towered aloft three thousand feet higher still! As it lay there with the shadows of the mountains brilliantly photographed upon its still surface, I thought it must surely be the fairest picture the whole world affords.”

Mark Twain wrote down those famous words about Lake Tahoe in 1861. Anyone who has been there will know what Twain meant. If you’ve never been to Lake Tahoe, what are you waiting for? Lake Tahoe is a vacation destination for world travelers, and it’s right in your backyard. Whether it’s car camping or backpacking, the Tahoe Basin has plenty to offer. If the thought of going without a shower or running water makes you queasy, many of Tahoe’s campgrounds offer the amenities of home. They are also close enough to great restaurants and quaint cafes if hot dogs and smores aren’t your thing. If it’s solitude you’re after and stuffing a backpack is more your speed, there are hundreds of miles of trails, many alpine lakes, and thousands of acres to explore. This sought after tourist spot is just minutes from home, so whether you’re loading up the car or lacing up your boots, get out there and experience what Mark Twain called the “Jewel of the Sierras.”
