ELLO everyone and welcome to the August issue of Wrekin News. A big thank you to everyone who is engaging with the magazine in print and online. We saw record numbers of the July copies picked up from our key locations so much so that in a couple of our ‘hot spots’ we ran out of magazines! Due to the extra demand we have printed more copies this month. As part of our continued commitment to widen the reach of the Wrekin News we have recently secured new distributions points at Waitrose supermarket in Newport and also the Wyevale Garden Centre in Donnington. I’m really pleased to report that both new distribution outlets have proved to be very popular. Our competitions are also proving as
popular as ever and a big thank you to everyone who takes the time to enter. This month we have gathered another wonderful selection of prizes and give-aways to please everyone. With the start of the summer holidays we have plenty of family passes to be won including a Family Passport for Ironbridge Gorge Museums. Please do enjoy our August issue we have some wonderful letters for you to read including a lovely poem from our old friend and correspondent Burt Morris, welcome back Burt! Please keep your letters, memories and pictures coming in - we love to print them. Enjoy the issue!

British Council award for HLC
H
ADLEY Learning Community has been awarded the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom. The International School Award is a badge of honour for schools that do outstanding work in international education, such as through links with partner schools overseas. Project Coordinator, Sajid Younis, said: I am delighted that the hard work and dedication of our pupils and staff, both from Angelique and HLC, have been recognised by the British Council and we have achieved this ISA award. I feel very proud that our school is one of the 1,404 schools across the UK who have been awarded with this prestigious award since 2012 – this is when both schools started collaborating with each other. We collaborated on different themes of global citizenship like identity and belongings, Fairness & Equality, Rights & Responsibilities, Conflict & Peace and Sustainable living. The main purpose and aim of the activities we undertook as a joint venture with our partner school was to engage pupils from both schools, both physically and mentally in projects that would broaden their ideas and horizons, in order, to make them better and more rounded citizens of the current global classroom that we live in. Pupils and teachers from both schools posted hand written letters spoke on Skype and visited each other’s schools. We managed to achieve our aims

and objectives in promoting global citizenship awareness and at the same time instilling a firm sense of identity, beliefs and values. As teachers we tried to make them aware of how much we all share in common within our daily family lives and how the underlying theme of all the major religions is promoting peace and harmony. The British Council International School Award started in 1999 to recognise the schools leading the way in instilling and developing a global dimension into the learning experience of all children and young people. Around 5,000 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the scheme began in 1999. We want to carry on the great work we started, by sharing lesson plans and resources and will continue to emphasise on the themes of global citizenship. Journey ahead is challenging but not the one we cannot take, as we plan to prepare our students to work on the projects of rights & responsibilities and fairness and equalities, covering the theme of British values, so that we can equip our youth with the knowledge which will lead them to become better citizens of tomorrow. We will have to work hard and also involve the parents and the community to be able to apply for re-accreditation in 2017.

George
EVANS How writing has changed over the last 90 years . . By George Evans
I
T IS now about 90 years since I started to read and write. My mother began to teach me the alphabet then and sent me off to Constitution Hill School at the very tender age of three and a bit. The class was learning capital letters and their names. They had arrived at V for vase when I joined them. When we knew all their names and shapes we copied them on a slate, about A5 size with a wooden frame, then rubbed that off with a wet rag and did it all over again. They were just starting on the lower case letters when I left there. After a couple of years off school with illness – tonsillitis followed by bovine tuberculosis – I went to another school but during my time off I learned the lower case letters and by 6 years old could read reasonably well, so I didn’t have much trouble fitting in my new school.
Then came Wrockwardine Boys’ School where my writing improved enough to be allowed to write in pencil on paper without much rubbing out. In the headmaster’s class at around 9 years of age we had pens. We dipped them into the ink, kept in brass covered inkwells in the desks. When you had a new pen nib it was best to lick it before dipping it in the ink so that the ink would stay on the pen. Blotting paper was needed as otherwise the ink took time to dry and was in danger of smudging. Besides, if you left a blot on the paper you would be caned. We called the head ‘Billy’ and he taught us to write in a sloping hand with thick down strokes and thin up strokes. It’s now called Edwardian I think. The capital letters were very fanciful and curly. He wrote the exercise on the blackboard in chalk and deviations from his example were punished with a caning. Our paper was multi-
lined, two blue lines for the smaller letters like a, e, i and u, within which they must fit and red lines above and below for the letters like h and g. Later I realised this was a waste of time. Lots of people used ‘dipper’ pens in offices, banks etc. but gradually fountain pens were used, with a rubber bladder for the ink and a lever to fill them with. Lots of fountain pens had gold coloured nibs. There were also pens with a tube and a needle in the end, which were rather easier. Then came a better ink called Quink in various colours, though most preferred blue-black, which

Thank you . . . Dear Wrekin News I have only just secured my copy of the July edition - and am blown away. I am moved to express my deepest thanks to your team for producing such a high quality article and to your good self for allocating not only part of your front page but also a doublepage-spread to commemorate this momentous event in local and world history. Please pass on my personal regards to your wonderful staff for doing all of us proud. I use the term ‘us’ to represent not only my forthcoming book but also the salute you have made to your own Wellington Community by dedicating so much space to highlight a very dark chapter in the social history of the town. By your efforts we doubly commemorate our forefathers’ considerable sacrifice made in a courageous but futile attempt to secure the peace in a futile war Many thanks - again regards Chris Owen Author of Wellington In The Great War
looked blue and turned black later. The fountain pens didn’t make thin and thick lines like the dipper ones so some people, especially Billy, would have nothing to do with them. At least I never had to cut a goose feather, though I did try that once. Using a decent fountain pen at least saved you from getting ink all over your fingers. Biro’s invention of ballpoints later became universal. At the High School we had a lot more writing to do and although dipper pens were issued most of us had fountain pens, pencils and crayons for colouring. Eventually I began to use an upright font because the sloping writing was slower and more likely to turn to illegible scribble when I had to write quickly as in taking notes. It was not until I started teaching writing that I discovered Marian Richardson style that was so very much better than the old fashioned sloping font I had so carefully learned at Wrockwardine. At Sankey’s some of the typewriters in the typing pool were electric. In the army there was hardly any writing to do except letters home until I became a company clerk, but then it was on a typewriter, with two fingers as I am doing now. During my long years of teaching there were few changes in handwriting but I remember the first computer at Orleton Park. The secretary, Delcie, showed it to us proudly, having been on a course at tech to learn how to operate it. Otherwise I didn’t change my ways much until I wanted to be a writer after retiring from teaching. My first book was written longhand, hoping Naomi, my wife would type it out for me but she had arthritis and couldn’t, so I first tried a typewriter I had brought back from Germany (with the SS sign on) though that was clumsy, so I bought a portable model and typed my 90,000 words on that. I realised that it had limitations as indeed so had I but at least I could do it. Then I bought an Amstrad – my first computer and wrote straight onto that. It had a wonderful new invention, a delete button, which I loved. That had a golf ball printer which made an enormous clatter and a 3” floppy disk as a memory. This was then changed to 3½“ but nobody can read what I so diligently ‘saved’. Then came a computer and another and another, each one an improvement on the last. One thing I have learned is that ‘saving’ a piece of writing means you may lose it when the system you saved it on goes out of fashion. The best way to keep information, articles or stories is to print them on a bit of paper. At least I can’t see that going out of date. The kind of writing I’m currently learning is on my iPhone, when I have to prod a screen with my finger. Perhaps writing with a finger was the first way of writing, before clay tablets and papyrus. It’s good to think that when I have finished this article, edited it and pruned it to exactly 1,000 words, I can simply click the right place with my mouse and it’ll magically fly off to James at Wrekin News and into print.

Football Kits
New trek kit for Charlotte Clarke
Charlotte Clarke, 17, from Wellington will leave for her month long Peru trek on Saturday 23rd July. The Shrewsbury Sixth Form student contacted the Trust for help buying the kit needed for the expedition. The Trust were happily able to help provide items such as the specialist fleece and rucksack that were needed. Whilst in Peru Charlotte and the rest of the group will be helping out a local orphanage. We look forward to updating our readers on Charlotte’s progress once she arrives home.
The Trust recently funded both the boys and girls school football kits. The boys chose a striking bright pink strip, whilst the girls went with the trust colours of orange and black. Both look equally eye-catching. Additionally all the school’s sports kits now have the Trust logo printed on them. As a result, Bakers (who produce the kits) have offered to donate 5% of these specific sales to the Trust. Thank you! We can’t wait to see people wearing the updated kit with our logo on.

Leading football photographer Matthew Ashton talks to Wrekin News about his recent month long assignment photographing the European Championship Finals in France.

> Matthew’s dejected Ronaldo picture appeared in newspapers and published on websites around the globe.
10 July, Matt was back in Paris to cover the grand finale as Portugal triumphed over their hosts. Matthew insists that his days are long and hard “It may seem like a holiday to some, but I did a match every day. For example, after a four-hour sleep, we had a six hour drive from our base in Paris to our next destination in Bordeaux. There is no time for sightseeing, we have to arrive at the stadium at least five hours before the game starts. That is like getting to Old Trafford at 10am for a 3pm Saturday kick off!” In every airport and at every major event, security is part of their daily routine when transporting cameras and lenses, but at Euro 2016 security was at very high levels. Matthew explained, “After a 10-minute car check, where they went from the engine, under the seats to the spare wheel, we had our bags searched again up to three times - and that was after going through an x-ray machine!”

hrewsbury based Matthew Ashton is one of the UK’s leading football photographers. He is the principle photographer and owner of AMA Sports Photo Agency (Agency Matthew Ashton). Working with a dedicated team of professional photographers AMA provides the official match day photography for clients such as WBA and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The busy agency also covers all the leading matches in the Premier League and Champions League, with Matthew himself regularly working in the USA and in the Far East. It’s very rare that Matt enjoys a summer away from the ‘beautiful game’ as the well-travelled photographer will often be found covering tournaments all over the globe. This summer was no exception with the AMA agency sending three photographers to cover the Euro 2016 championship. Matt’s tournament shoot began on Friday 10 June with the opening match between hosts France and Group ‘A’ opponents Romania. 9,891 miles later, on Sunday
“We chose the games we want to attend to with UEFA months prior. Photographers collect their match tickets and allocated seats from three hours before kick off. When I go to Aston Villa, Borussia Dortmund, even LA Galaxy, I can sit pretty much anywhere I want, but at major tournaments like this you have to choose a seat for the 90 minutes.” For the first eight games Matthew only had two goals down his end, “It really is a lottery sometimes.” Matthew’s profession is ever changing, “If I was to boast about what I did, I would gladly stand on a table and proclaim that I was a brilliant colour printer and wonderful at processing film quickly in order to meet deadlines, however those days are long gone! The last print I made in a darkroom was in 2002!” Nowadays, using specialist digital cameras, apart from capturing the moment, speed is key with AMA having an editor back in the UK editing and captioning images before syndicating them to the world’s press. Matthew explains, “UEFA cater to our needs and provide very fast eithernet cables pitch side which we connect our cameras or computers to in order to transfer pictures quickly back to base. This leaves the photographers pitchside to concentrate on what is in front of them instead of missing something whilst having their head in a laptop. “The events really are set up for TV. They look wonderful on television and sometimes when watching back you often question if it was the same event that we have witnessed. “We don’t go to games like a fan and Continued on page 16 > www.wrekinnews.co.uk · 15 09

we don’t watch the game like a fan. Our work to get pictures, but we can only capture what is in front of us. To be honest, lots of the football for action photography was rather dull. I remember at one game, myself and colleagues from Japan and Germany literally punching the air on 78 minutes when we got our first decent action picture. Also there are lots of other factors that people never think about you have to be mentally strong and keep your head.” “The day before the final, the stadium floodlights were kept on over night. This resulted in hundreds of thousands of moths on and around the pitch making working conditions very uncomfortable.” Luck ran out when it mattered at the final. Although Matthew was in the right place at the right time, when Ronaldo was crying and had to go off injured, the winning goal was unfortunately scored at the other end. “Ronaldo got tackled and for once he actually looked badly injured and when the stretcher arrived, he was visibly crying. I got some nice pictures of him in tears. I knew that those pictures had lost their value when to my amazement, he reappeared in the second half and almost took over the role of coach on the sideline and then Portugal scored the winning goal down. “Through experience, you have to make split second decisions and sometimes gamble. I knew the Ronaldo crying images were not as strong had Portugal lost. So, instead of covering the Portuguese celebrating wildly, I decided to document the dejection of the French.” www.amasportsphotoagency.co.uk

POW tales from Rodway Farm
In our last issue we printed a wonderful letter from Dr Paul Minton, now a resident in South Wales, Dr Paul wrote with a touching story about forbidden love between a German POW stationed at Donnington and Monica Cann, a sergeant in the local Women’s ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service).
T
HE story has prompted Wrekin News reader Jean Madeley and her brother John to share with us their own memories of post-Second World War POW’s. Jean and older brother John lived with their parents Jack and Winifred, sister Doreen and brother Graham on a farm in Kynnersley called Rodway Manor Farm – in fact it’s still in family hands today and farmed by youngest brother Graham. In 1947 John was a young 18 year-old man who like many of his generation had left school at 14 years old and started working for his father on the > The family had this photograph taken at Rodway Manor Farm in 1947 with Franz and farm. The first two German POW’s invited to stay at Rodway Manor were Franz Beckman and Edouard Sampels they had been based in the camp at Sherrifhales and whilst little was known about their background and involvement in the war they did disclose that they had been captured in Europe by the Americans and after spending some time in the USA they were shipped over to the UK, docking in Liverpool before making the journey south to Sheriffhales. Quiet at first, both men soon became an integral part of farm life. Up early to help young John milk the cows and often working till late into the evening. Both men liked to keep themselves busy and often in their own time they would continue doing chores around the farmyard. Jean remembers how they had a real knack for chopping and stacking logs with great precision. They would fill all of the empty hen houses high to the roof with perfectly cut and stacked logs, a supply that lasted the family long after the two men had left the farm. Whilst Edouard and Franz lived and worked on the farm they would have little reason to return to the camp in Sheriffhales. They would receive occasional visits from the camp barber who would give them a short back and sides and whilst on the farm the barber would also give Jack and John a free trim! The POW’s would also receive visits from the camp supplies who would give the men clean clothes to wear and replace worn out Wellington boots. One regular visitor to the farm from the camp was another POW called Willie Mengels. Willie was a very talented artist and would draw wonderful birthday and Christmas cards for Jean and her sister. He acted as the camp Commandant and would visit Franz and Edouard often on his bicycle staying late into the summer evenings to play cards with the family. He often joined them for the traditional family Sunday lunch. His talents didn’t end with greetings cards however, he also turned his hand to painting signage and during the summer weeks he took the doors off Jack’s lorry and painted the company name of the farm on the door. John remembers driving around the county lanes doing his deliveries in the wagon without the security of the doors whilst Willie completed his masterpiece! Edouard was the first of the POW’s to be repatriated. He stayed on the farm for around a year before being sent home to what was then East Germany also known as the Russian Zone. Franz returned home a few months later and it is believed that he had a Continued on page 20 >

wife and two young children waiting for him. Following the departure of Franz and Edouard, Jean and John can remember other German POW’s coming to stay on the farm including Helmut Patzel and Walter Witt who was a very talented tailor and made Jean’s younger brother Graham a suit out of an old coat. John recalled a touching story that happened in 1948 when unannounced an English soldier and his female companion appeared suddenly at the farm gate. The soldier enquired about the whereabouts of POW Helmut Patzel, John thought this was strange at first but soon all became apparent when it was announced that the soldiers’ companion was his newly wedded wife and Helmut’s sister. The soldier had been stationed in Germany and had married his sweetheart. They settled in the East Midlands and John can remember Helmut would often change his clothing and sneak off to visit them at their new home. If caught he would have been in trouble with the authorities but he always returned safe and sound. John and Jean stayed in touch with Franz and Edouard for a few years’ afterwards exchanging letters and pictures. Winifred would also send both families parcels with some of Graham’s hand-me-down clothes for the children. Reflecting on the time that they spent in the company of the German POW’s you could see that John and Jean thoroughly enjoyed their company. The family completely trusted their belligerents and they treated them well, so much so, that during the summer months the
POW’s would accompany the family on social outings. Jean also remembers on the odd occasion when Jack, Winifred and Grandma were out together, Franz and Edouard were given the ultimate responsibility of looking after the farm and the children. In return they were both fed well and treated more than fairly. They became an important part of the families working and social life and were sorely missed when they returned to their homeland. > After returning to his family in Germany, Willie Mengels sent the Madeley family this photograph taken in 1949. He is pictured on the far left with his wife and child.

Treat life as an adventure! Long standing friend of the Wrekin News Ross Vickers visited our office recently with his wonderful memories of his Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme expedition.
T
HIS year the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is 60 years old and I attended what was ‘Trench Boys School’ later to become the Lord John Hunt School. It was here that I took the opportunity to get involved with the award scheme together with 20 other pupils. The main reason that the school got involved was that the headmaster Harold Fletcher was a friend of Lord Hunt as they both came from the same part of Shropshire. Lord Hunt became the school’s President and > Above: Ross is pictured attended many of the school’s annual prize with his fellow DOE Gold giving’s, he always encouraged everybody with award winners and Wrekin their activities to gain the different sections of MP Bill Yates at the Houses the award scheme. of Parliament. Right: How In 1960 we took the final section of the the Wellington Journal gold standard which was the expedition. This reported the event and involved a 50 mile hike in south Shropshire. We below: The invitation card were split into three groups of seven and had sent to Ross inviting him to work together as a team. It was autumn and the receive his award at the weather was not kind to us we had rain, Buckingham Palace. sleet and snow over the three days making us feel really miserable, but we had to persevere. Besides the hike we had to carry out initiative tests one was to take a body on a stretcher down a 100 foot vertical rock face, actually the body had been substituted by a large bag of rocks. Five members stayed at the top and lowered the stretcher over the edge of the rock face on ropes. Whilst this was happening two of us went down on ropes either side of the stretcher lifting it over rocky out crops. Twenty minutes later we successfully reached the bottom. We had passed that section and moved on to a section of dense forest where we were given a map reference and had to navigate through the forest to the exact point. We were allowed 30 feet both side of the exit point and would have points deducted if we strayed off course. We did not see anybody at the check point and had to proceed to the next test. We were given a destination which involved crossing a stream without using the bridges nearby. We chose a point which was narrow and decided to jump across the stream, we took off our rucksacks and the first member took a big run and cleared the stream, we then had to throw our rucksack to the other side. All went well until the last member of the team George, had to carry out his jump. He picked up his rucksack stood on the edge of the bank took a swing and ended up not letting go and fell in the stream. He got out on the same side as he had to jump from completely wet through. On his second attempt the rucksack landed on the far bank and George took a long run launched himself and landed just short of the other bank, he had a second drenching. He did however climb out on the far bank. After changing his clothes in the rain, we proceeded on our journey. We eventually completed the course, very cold and tired only to find out that we were the only team to complete the expedition. I remember I had to have a week off work to recuperate. It was on the 16 May 1961 when the seven of us went to Buckingham Palace to receive our gold award from His Royal Highness Prince Phillip.
Afterwards we were escorted to the Houses of Parliament and were met by Harold Fletcher our headmaster and Eric Pickering Deputy head and Bill Yates our Wrekin MP who took us on a guided to of the House of Parliament. It was a most memorable day after a three year journey. After leaving school and starting work I had a high regard for Trench Modern School and was often invited back to special events. The one that I remember most is Lord Hunt’s Memorial Service when I was handed a copy of his message to us all. ‘Treat Life as an Adventure, Look on its problems and difficulties as a welcome challenge to your skill, your patience and your spirit. This is the attitude in which to tackle The Mountains of Life’. This is what we all should believe and the world will be a richer place.

What’s happening with the Clifton project? At the risk of repeating myself there has been much rumour, speculation and rhetoric concerning the Clifton Community Arts Centre Ltd during the past year. Much of the lack of publicity and information is that we have been working hard behind the scenes (forgive the pun) to look at our funding and a way ahead for the project. Due to the print deadlines of the Wrekin News, we are unable to give the readers full and up-to-date information until after our AGM on the 22nd July 2016. (The Wrekin News goes to press two days earlier on the 20th). We are however able to let you know that subject to various Motions put forward to our Members (shareholders) on the 22nd, we are optimistic that we will be able to give the people of Wellington and its surround some good news. At the time of going to press we have to make it clear that the Clifton site remains in the ownership of Dunelm. We are told that there are pre-planning discussions with a developer taking place, but no Planning Permission has been sought from Wellington Town Council and Telford & Wrekin Borough Council.
Now to some positive information about further “pop-up” Clifton events that are being considered for the remainder of the year. We are definitely holding a further film series in October – running in conjunction with Wellington Festival (formerly the Literary Festival. The films and the application for tickets will be available on 1st August 2016. We also have funding for a Foreign Film Festival – probably to be held in October. Watch the Wrekin News and the local press and entertainment magazines, and listen to broadcast media, for details. Alongside the above, we plan to consider another visit by Three Men and a Bow Tie – a very successful event previously and there is also a Business Breakfast in the mix. Lots of other ideas are in preparation and we will share these once everything is confirmed. So, as we’ve said before – Watch this space. Thank you Wrekin News for your continuing support. Walford Agrics start summer term with new harvester North Shropshire College’s (NSC) Agriculture students at Walford have had a good start to their summer term, with the arrival of a selfpropelled forage harvester at Walford Farm. The machine has been delivered to the Farm from Rea Valley Tractors, premium suppliers of new and used tractors and agricultural machinery. Since the arrival of the new machinery students have been excited to learn about its mechanics, drive the machine and see it in its full working glory. As part of the Agriculture course students study the ‘Principles of Land-Based Machinery’, so the arrival of the harvester has meant that students get an enriched learning experience in this aspect of their course. Richard Aldis, Farm Manager at NSC, commented “Having the harvester on the farm is a fantastic experience for the students and they have been practicing their skills driving the machine. With the theory and the practical elements of the module the students get a fantastic knowledge of grassland and silage production.” The Walford Campus opened its doors on Sunday for Open Farm Sunday, a national campaign that allows members of the public to experience what it means to be a farmer and find out where food comes from. The day welcomed over 50 members of the public, who were able to see a sheep shearing demonstration, have a personalised tour around the farm and see the robotic milking parlour in action. Visitors came from as far afield as Wolverhampton, Bridgnorth and Chester to visit the facilities and take part in activities at the Walford farm. It’s not too late to apply for Agriculture qualifications at NSC, you can apply online via our website, www.nsc.ac.uk or call our Admissions Team on 01691 688080. On Saturday 19 March, 22 scouts from 1st Priorslee and St Georges troop braved the cold to sleep rough to raise money for YMCA Wellington, making their own temporary shelters in order to achieve their Fundraising Badges. Fortunately the night was not as cold as it had been prior to the event or it could have been even more of a challenge! The troop raised a huge £780.00. Mandie Mulloy, General Manager at YMCA Wellington visited the troop to give a brief overview on the work that the charity does, not only in Wellington but throughout Telford offering floating support through the Thrive Partnership. She explained to the scouts that YMCA hold regular ‘Have your Say’ events for customers to suggest things they would like to do in the coming year. One of the suggestions was a short holiday for customers who had personally achieved a goal over the previous few months. Part of the funds raised by the scouts will go towards a camping trip to Wales some of the tenants at YMCA have never been outside of Shropshire, and the monies raised will be a great help towards this. The troop has invited Mandie to return in the autumn to give an update on the trip. Wrekin News spring 2016 - half page.pdf 1 24/02/2016 16:49:03

Beating the junk food industry at its own game Professor Ralph Early is head of the Department of Food Science and Agri-Food Supply Chain Management in Harper Adams University, Food Sector Champion for the Telford Business Board, a Council Member of the Food Ethics Council, and a member of the Guild of Food Writers.
O
N the 5 July 2016 Cancer Research UK issued a press release stating that “Junk food advertising is too tempting for children”. The evidence has been growing for years that the UK’s problem of increasing obesity and diabetes in children is unquestionably linked to the consumption of junk foods. The behaviour of the junk food industry in targeting children and the negative effects the sector is having on children’s health is something about which we should all be concerned. Indeed, a highly relevant question for our time is: What can parents do to protect their children from diet-related diseases when our high streets and shopping malls are awash with businesses selling so many nutritionally inappropriate food products? The simple answer, and a message developed in the two earlier articles in this series, is for families to kick the junk food habit and eat home-cooked meals. But, it is in the nature of children to resist parental control and healthy eating advice, so ordering them to give up take-away cheese-burgers for something healthier will likely make them want to eat unhealthy food even more. The problem remains: How can parents improve family dietary practice in the face of such strong influences from

the junk food industry? The Cancer Research UK study found that children like confectionery, crisps and other snack foods. Simple observation shows that psychologically they enjoy foods that are sweet and salty or, even better, rich in fat mixed with sugar or starch to create moreish desire. They like the dynamic contrast built into many junk foods, when the sensory attributes of texture and mouthfeel change rapidly, as when snack foods crunch audibly in the mouth and dissolve away to load the stomach with empty-calorie starch that fails to satiate, so even more is consumed. Junk food manufacturers use all the tricks they can, including food psychology techniques to increase profits. The executives of junk food companies aim at filling young stomachs with energy-dense fizzy drinks, burgers, pizzas, confectionery, doughnuts and sugary breakfast cereals. For them children’s health is not a priority. If it were they would not spend vast amounts of money creating products expressly for children, targeting advertising at children, and finding devious ways to use the Internet to lure children to unhealthy products when parents are not around. But parents can learn from the junk food industry. The characteristics that make junk food desirable to children can be built into home-made foods that are worlds apart, being very much healthier and just as enjoyable. If, for example, parents were to make for themselves burgers that looked, smelled and tasted so much better than factory-made, fastfood burgers, children might be tempted to try something different and switch. Indeed, tasty beef burgers are very easy to make. Take an onion, dice it, fry until brown to give flavour, mix with 500 g trimmed, finely ground frying steak and breadcrumbs (from a slice of bread) used to help bind the ingredients. Season with salt and pepper. A few drops of chipotle (smoked chilli) or soy sauce can give interest. Mix the ingredients and handform into burgers; about two tablespoon’s worth per burger. Fry in a little olive oil, being sure to cook both sides and thoroughly to the centre. Serve with sautéed potatoes, cooked slowly to sweeten, then browned, and garnish with a little salad. By recognising what it is that attracts children to junk food and creating their own, better quality and more nutritious versions at home, parents stand a chance of beating the industry at its own game. It’s all about taking charge and having a go. Get it right and children will benefit. Importantly, parents will also gain peace of mind by doing what’s nutritionally right by their offspring.

Anyone for apple crumble?
Towards the end of August we start we start hearing the same phrase in our homebrew shops, I’ve got a lot of apples! The kitchen goddesses out there then produce apple pies, apple crumbles, toffee apples, apple muffins until the freezers groan and waist buttons pop. And the apples keep coming... So thoughts turn to cider. We sell apple presses, crushers, apple pickers, yeast and all the bottles, barrels and fermenters needed. We give all the free advice and suggestions for individual customers requirements. And every August, September and October we do it all over again. Many of you will have visited the Shrewsbury Flower Show and don’t need me to say how wonderful it is. But many go in Thursday evening before it starts on the Friday to help with the judging. Organized by the Shrewsbury wine circle, the wine competition attracts 500 to 600 bottles entered every year. All the wine classes are OPEN, which means anyone can enter. The bottles are all indentical and numbered into classes. The judge decides on quality alone which is best, and with up to forty bottles per class this can be a challenge. Apart from the fierce yet bloodfree rivalry, the advantage of entering a few bottles in classes is an Exhibitors Badge which allows free access to both show days. As standards of winemaking are high in Shropshire to receive a prize or place card is well deserved. You are too late to enter this year, but the Flower Show is a must see for all Shropshire folk. Most of the static displays are in vast marquees so even the weather doesn’t matter much. Just fish out your most comfortable shoes...

A warm family welcome awaits
A
much-appreciated outside table with a beautiful view of the River Severn waited for us on a very warm sunny evening at The Brewery Inn, Coalport. My husband, children and myself received a warm welcome from Fiona and we were presented with a menu with a wide choice of good hearty home cooked pub food at affordable prices, starting from as little as £3. James choose scampi and chips, Catherine had a beef burger (which she said was amazing), Isabel had ham and egg and I had the most delicious homemade lasagna, all served with a very generous serving of chunky chips and fresh crispy salad. We couldn’t believe our eyes when the food arrived; the portion sizes were more than ample! Fortunately we did manage to leave a little room for a pudding! Well all I can say is ‘YUM’! We had hot chocolate fudge cake with ice cream, jam sponge and custard, which took me, back to my school days and Isabel had a mountain of chocolate ice cream. The Brewery Inn is such a family friendly pub; both James and I could relax making the evening very enjoyable. Isabel played happily with the toys that are provided and soon made a little friend. Fiona said that they pride themselves on being a family friendly pub. They offer family games nights, including a board game and bingo night in which all the money raised goes to a chosen charity. The staff were all so friendly and couldn’t do enough to help. One of the bar staff Ameelya Bridgwater has just won a student of the year award from TCAT. A hospitality student, Ameelya has been working her apprenticeship at The Brewery Inn and has been rewarded for a lot of hard work and dedication, the ‘Brewery family’ is very proud of her. The Brewery Inn has been a big part of Fiona’s life. She recently became more involved stepping into the management of the pub after her father and previous landlord for over thirty years Roger sadly passed away. Fiona and the team have worked very hard on re-branding and refurbishing the pub. Located next to the Silkin Way, I was fascinated to hear that they have an equestrian

area where horse riders can tether their steeds whilst enjoying a meal. On Saturdays they have riding schools visit and the children can have chips and a drink for £1. If you wanted to just get away from it all, The Brewery Inn has fishing rights on the River Severn; day tickets are available from the bar and why not start early and tackle one of The Brewery Inn’s famous breakfasts! Attached to the pub is a fully furnished holiday cottage that sleeps up to six people. Fiona opens the pub at 9am offering breakfast till 11.30am; lunch is served from 12pm till 2.30pm with evening meals served from 5pm and last food orders taken at 7.30pm. If I sum up our visit…. The Brewery Inn is a lovely tranquil pub in a beautiful setting next to the River Severn, with friendly and attentive staff serving good honest home cooked food with a family friendly atmosphere. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this pub to family and friends of any age. Thank you for having us Fiona, see you again soon!

Get your garden ready for the summer holiday
T
HIS is the time of the year when many of you will be going on holiday so do remember to tidy your garden and mow the lawn before going. An un-kept and neglected garden gives signs that the property is empty. It is advisable to move hanging baskets as these need to be watered regularly, daily in hot weather, and will probably be dead when you return if left in place. Place them somewhere in the shade and sit them in a reservoir of water, a bowl placed under them filled with water, then they will usually survive. Many people think this will drown the plants if it should be wet while you are away; it is true that the

base may be damaged by sitting in water but the great majority of the basket will survive. The easier way would be to get your neighbour to pop in and do the watering for you, but expect to have a request to reciprocate in the future. Also think ahead and move the baskets occasionally before going so it does not appear different when the baskets suddenly disappear. Now is the time to do the maintenance pruning of early flowering shrubs. These can be reduced by removing some of the old shoots to maintain the plants shape and size. The summer pruning of wisteria should also be done now; this means the removal of up to half of this year’s growth. Doing this will help to lighten the weight of the plant so that should we get a wet or windy spell the wisteria’s supports will not be as severely tested as the mass of foliage will have been reduced. It will also mean that what is left of the new growth will be allowed to ripen and this will, in turn, encourage the flowers buds to

form for next year’s display. The other pruning which is necessary now is that of any trained trees. These are ones which are grown against walls or fences, or even over arches. This year’s growth should be shortened and where it is growing away from the structure it should be removed completely. Hopefully the weather will improve and there will be the opportunity to sit in the garden and enjoy the fruits of your earlier labours. There is one plant which has, it appears, fully appreciated this year’s weather. That is the evergreen magnolia. These plants produce flowers which, when the shrub is mature, can reach 25 cm across and unlike the other magnolias are very unlikely to suffer from frost damage, because it flowers in August.

Summer pet safety By
Rachel Saunders MRCVS
I think it’s fair to say that we all enjoy a bit of sunshine; pets included. However it is important to be aware of the potential problems that hot weather can pose to our furry friends. I am sure we have all seen the reminders to never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle on a warm day. Even if parked in a ‘cool’ area, cars can heat up to dangerous, and sometimes fatal temperatures within minutes. It also important to remember that cars can heat up when on the move too; a dog in the boot of a car stuck in a motorway traffic jam can become very hot on a sunny day. It is sensible to avoid travel during the hottest midday sunshine whenever possible, and stick to the cooler mornings and evenings. The same goes for walking your dog; lovely as it is to go for a hike on a beautiful summer day, your dog won’t thank you if they are struggling to cope with the heat. It is best to take your four-legged friend out for
their adventures during the cooler time of day, and let them make the most of relaxing in the garden or house during the hotter spells. Thick or long coated breeds may benefit from having their coat clipped over the summer to help keep them cool. Pets with white ear tips, particularly cats, can be prone to sunburn, just like those fair skinned people amongst us. If your cat is a sunworshipper, you can apply a small amount of sun cream to the ear tips to keen sunburn at bay. Always make sure that your pet has access to plenty of fresh water and a cool, shaded area at home, whether they are indoors or outdoors. Rabbits are extremely sensitive to heat, and ambient temperatures of as low as 23C can be enough to induce heat stroke. Symptoms of hyperthermia (heat stroke) in dogs, cats, and rabbits can include lethargy, reluctance to walk, collapse and excessive panting. If you are concerned that your pet may be suffering from hyperthermia you can help reduce
Look good. Feel better. Live longer.
the body temperature by putting some cool (but not freezing cold) water on their head and feet, and laying a cool, wet towel over the body. Offer fresh drinking water, and make sure your pet is moved to a cool area. You should seek veterinary advice straight away if there is not a rapid improvement in symptoms. It is sensible to ensure that your pet’s vaccines and parasite treatments are up to date throughout the year, but particularly so in summer when your pet may be travelling to areas they wouldn’t normally be if they are holidaying with you, or going to enjoy their own vacation in kennels or cattery. Our vets and nurses are always happy to advise you on the most appropriate preventative treatment schedule for your pets. Ensure that microchip details are kept up to date so that your pet can be reunited with you if they should become lost while you are on holiday with them; remember that it is now a legal requirement that all dogs are microchipped.

Hair & Beauty
Ironbridge hotel creates a new memory garden
ASK THE EXPERTS
Question: what do you do if you have very dry damaged hair due to over colouring?
Barry says:
with our expert Barry Deighton of Deighton Hair & Beauty
There are two types of dry hair, one is naturally dry hair hair that is low in moisture usually natural curly hair thick and course hair. The hairs natural moisture content is only 3% of the hairs make up and quite easily go out of balance, so just like your skin you need to moisturise with the correct shampoo and treatment you may need to use this regime always as your hair cannot repair itself unlike your skin, find a salon where they will talk you through products and finishers to moisturise and shut down the cuticle. Now the other type of dry hair is chemically dry due to over indulgence of usually high lift colours and bleaching without the correct process being applied chemicaly dry hair has had the moisture eliminated but also you have lost parts of the protein bundles inside the hair and quite possibly some cuticle to. The loss of some of the protein bundles reduces the hair strength pliability and the holes caused by this fill with water when you shampoo and can tend to matt together in severe cases but drys quickly as your dryer will just blow the water straight out, moisture on its own is not sufficient you need a combination of protein and moisture to rebalance but more so protein to give back its strength stop any breakage but must have a combination seek professional help with your colour or change your hairdresser! Q. If you have acrylic nails, how long do you leave them before having a break?
Sara says:
Acrylic nails can be worn permantley if required, it really is down to how the clients feel about their natural nails. I have clients that have acrylic extensions applied if their natural nails (which normally are good length) have been damaged due to excess housework, gardening etc, and maybe have a special occasion coming up that they would like longer nails for. These clients then generally have the extensions removed once the natural nail has grown to a length they are happy with. They will then revert back to regular manicures to keep the nails healthy. Other clients have a week natural nail and keep acrylic extensions on permanantley. As a nail technician I keep a close eye on the condition of the natural nail during our 2-3 weekly infill appointments. I recommend that the clients wear rubber gloves when using detergent and regurlarly massage cuticle oil into the cuticle and nail area to keep a good condition of the nail growth and keep the acrylic supple and flexible. So, to conclude length of duration of acrylic extensions is really down to the individual.

A memory garden is to be created in the grounds of a Shropshire hotel so that families can plant a rose to remember their loved ones. The garden at the Best Western Valley Hotel in Ironbridge will be open all year round for people to visit. The idea comes after an increase in the number of wakes at the family-owned hotel on the banks of the River Severn. Sales and marketing manager Lisa Snape said: “Nowadays more people seem to be holding wakes away from the home. “They are after a quiet and relaxing venue where family and friends can get together, have a drink and share memories and stories about the one they have lost. “We’ve hosted at least 30 wakes here at the hotel over the last twelve months so we thought it would be

nice to create a memory garden and give families the option of having a rose planted to remember those that they have lost. “The gardens here are beautiful and very tranquil and a perfect setting for families to come back and visit anytime, especially in the summer when the roses are in full bloom. We also overlook Dale End Park which is also beautiful when it is in full bloom and guests at a wake often take themselves off for a walk around the park for some time out during a funeral wake when they are emotional or want time to reflect alone. “Not everyone feels comfortable visiting a church or cemetery so this will be a nice alternative and a lovely place for children to visit too.” The garden has been created and the first roses are due to be planted by families in the next few months.

What have you got to lose? Are you intrigued by the Newspaper, Radio and TV adverts, or sick to death of the barrage of phone calls, text messages, and emails asking “HAVE YOU GOT PPI?” If so, and you have taken a loan, credit card or Mortgage over the last 25years or so, but you have not yet taken any action because you cannot remember buying such a policy, cannot find any paperwork, or have perhaps been told by the staff at your local Bank that you do not have a claim, let me work with you to access the Bank records to so that you can be absolutely sure. You may have seen in the news recently that the Financial Conduct Authority
are looking at setting a deadline for new claims, and I would urge you to act promptly to make sure you do not miss out. Over recent months I have been able to get refunds of between £100 and £42000 for local people just like you. Just imagine how helpful a windfall such as this would be when your Holiday credit card bill lands on your doormat, or when you are dreaming of that Cruise you’ve seen on the TV adverts! The service that I offer is face to face, in your own home, and you will not have to pay a penny until you actually get a compensation pay out. What have you got to lose?
Have you taken out a loan, credit card, finance agreement or mortgage in the last 20 years? You may have been mis-sold a Payment Protection Plan (PPI) and could be due compensation of hundreds or possibly thousands of pounds!

Syd
Taylor
The region’s nu mber one motoring journalist
Built to order for the beefy builder! Syd Taylor gets behind the wheel of this brawny beauty but with it’s handsome metallic looks, loaded features and comfort you don’t have to own a hard hat and high-viz jacket to appreciate the new Nissan Navara - but it helps!
You could go to The Palace in one of these new Navaras - not only to point the crumbling brickwork but to collect your MBE with the wife alongside and the kids in the back.
W
ITH the low sun lighting the road home I drove the new Navara on a winding and gently undulating route, as lengthening shadows trailed in my wake like wind-rippled pennants. It was then that I understood. Back in the days of chivalry knights in armour depended upon their muscular chargers to deliver their point in a business-like way - the better to confound the opposition. In todays world where it is rare to lay siege to a castle, but common to lay siege to sanity, successful endeavours require a solid saddle on a dependable mount. And so it is in the LCV sector. No Knight of Camelot was ever graced with a mount so magnificent as this Nissan - truly the grail of galloping load carriers. It doesn’t so much make a point as point the way forward to pick-up paradise. When I gushed about the Navara to friend Lance Lake the builder, he voiced scepticism. “You don’t sound so much like The Bard of Avon singing the Nissan’s praises as The Bard of RaveOn taking the Nissan!” When laughter subsided I threw down the gauntlet.
“If you don’t believe me then grant me an afternoon of your time and I will convince you that for the likes of you, this Navara is Nirvana”. With brawny beauty the high and mighty up-rearing of metallic majesty gleams with uncompromising purpose and with 18” alloys, roof rails, side steps and rear privacy glass you’re very much aware of admiring glances. To a vicars wife it might want for gentility but for a beefy builder, the new Navara definitely is built to order, with wheel arches bulging like biceps and a visor-shaped grille suggesting
a helmeted countenance that will brook no nonsense. And no nonsense is what this two tonne double cab with a 3,500kg towing capacity and a now 67mm longer plastic-lined load bay is about. But the big news is the new fully independent multi-link rear suspension. So what’s the top specification £26,209 plus VAT, Tekna double cab with the 190PS 2.3 dCi Twin Turbo engine (that has given sterling service across both the Nissan and Renault commercial ranges) really like? ‘A workhorse’ I hear you say ‘Is not made for jolly boulevard cruising on sunny afternoons in Bournemouth. Utility has to trump sybaritic serenity’. But that’s not the case with the Navara. You get your cake and you can eat it. Years ago pick-up drivers - who were usually unshaven and displayed a gluteal cleavage - were incarcerated in a spartan cell on wheels, but now comfort and style for them and their rear seat passengers ride high. On the outside there might be that glamorous Schwarzenegger sheen of a Mister Universe contender but the interior is another matter. Nothing effete you understand but everything is effortlessly smart and comfortable. The Tena

Needle & Thread specification Navara is loaded with top electronics, climate control, rear view camera, power this’n that, and above all... those heated leather seats. They’re probably the best in the business. You could go to The Palace in one of these new Navaras - not only to point the crumbling brickwork but to collect your MBE with the wife alongside and the kids in the back. “By Gum!” Exclaimed Lance. “I’ve got a bad back but can’t even tell’. “That’s because the seat design is inspired by NASA” I pointed out. Not to get too technical, they appear to be constructed with voyage to Mars specifications in mind. It might not be rocket powered but courtesy of the the gutsy engine you have the pulling power to haul a 3,500kg asteroid for a couple of astronomical units of distance without stopping for fuel. It’s amazingly economical for such a large vehicle. I got more than the claimed 40.3 mpg when driving gently. It’s a lovely sweet engine that’s barely above tickover at motorway speeds as it rides beautifully with the improved suspension that smooths away carriageway carbuncles. If you really want to hurry you can reach about 110/115 mph and enjoy swapping the ratios manually in the seven speed auto box - but it’s best left in auto to do the job for you. And importantly, a lot of off-road capability comes at the twist of a dial into 4wd high or 4wd low. Put your Stetson on and it sure rides the rugged trail like a ramrod drover. “My word” exclaimed Lance “Not a single one of my fillings has been dislodged.” I smiled and put on an album of his favourite band, Shock of Ages and selected the track ‘Lodestar’. A load of heavy metal? As nothing to the new Nissan Navara.

OLLOWING two years which saw AFC Telford United enveloped in a cloud of pessimism and despair, positive thinking has returned to the New Bucks Head. Last year’s struggle against relegation, which came hot on the heels of a demotion twelve months before, plunged the club into the most difficult period it had experienced. A new season opens up the opportunity to arrest the slide and restore some of the optimism that was evident during the dramatic rise of the previous decade. The man charged with doing so is manager Rob Smith. The exHednesford boss has now rebuilt a side that contains just one player, goalkeeper James Montgomery, from that which he inherited eleven months ago. Smith has constructed a midfield that is strong on character and that

is personified by the likes of Jack Rea and Lee Fowler. Tough tackling Rea was a popular figure last time around as he played a major part in the Bucks’ great escape. Fowler has been around and boasts plenty of experience having played for Coventry City and Huddersfield Town. His tenacious style and coolness on the ball will be invaluable in the battles ahead. Up front ex-Shrewsbury Town man David Hibbert is joined by two younger men who hope to make their mark in front of goal. Nineteenyear-old Danny Reynolds arrives from Wrexham, he is a tidy player who has impressed with his movement and once he finds his way to goal could prove a real find. Alongside Reynolds is Tom
Peers. The twenty-year-old had a successful loan spell at Marine last season from parent club Chester bagging eight goals in nine appearances. With Josh Wilson, who proved in the spring that he knows the way to goal on the books, Telford should have no problems finding the back of the net. Defensively too Smith seems to have recruited well. With gutsy Darren Campion retained and joined by an impressive set of centre backs in the guise of Dan Preston, Gianluca Havern and Ben Bailey who are unlikely to be easily outmuscled. All in all an impressive line up. The big kick off is on 6 August as the Bucks entertain AFC Fylde, the start of what promises to be another exciting chapter in the history of AFC Telford United.

Crucial win for Wellington CC
W
ELLINGTON beat Sutton Coldfield in a ‘must win game’. First Team Coach, Ross Edwards said; “It was a crucial win, the Sutton Coldfield fixture, in footballing terms, was your traditional six pointer.” In recent weeks Wellington slipped from first to tenth in the league - Sutton Coldfield are bottom. Edwards continued; “We had to win this match, we couldn’t afford anything else but a win and to be fair to the players that’s what they delivered. We lost the toss and fielded first. Wendell Wagner, who has been immense this season, led the bowling attack and took four for 33. I was impressed with the way we finished off the innings. Just as they were looking to accelerate Daniel Candlish pulled off an outstanding catch and from then on we had a real energy and buzz about us.” Wellington restricted Sutton Coldfield to 172 all out, Bhargav Merai and Adam Byram providing useful support with figures of three for 26 and three for 31 respectively. “We took the momentum we gained from fielding into our batting. It was fantastic watching Bhargav score 87 in 88 balls, he hits the ball so hard while keeping it on the ground but I was equally impressed with Dan Lloyd. Opening the batting we were in a bit a trouble at 34 for two until Dan ground out 39 runs from 104 balls. It was a great knock because by the time he was out the result was beyond doubt.” Wellington romped home by 7 wickets with 12 overs remaining. 24 points that hopefully will provide a platform for the rest of the season. Before the Sutton Coldfield match Wellington had struggled. The home fixture against Brockhampton was ‘frustrating’. Despite the rain reducing the game to 40 overs per side, Wellington were in touching distance of getting 20 points but had to be content with seven. Edwards takes up the story; “We bowled pretty well, limiting them to 144-6. Wendell and Adam Byram took two wickets each. We batted properly and needed four off the last ball, Wendell smacked it, only for one of their fielders to pull off a fantastic stop. We could have done with those extra 13 points but hey, it happens.”

> Wendell Wagner in fine form for Wellington. The game against Moseley was a ‘bad day at the office.’ Wellington didn’t bat very well, yes, it was wet but they let Fred Eburah (four for 35) bowl at them and were knocked over for 155. The bowlers responded by taking three quick wickets but the result was never seriously in doubt. Moseley finally reaching the target with the loss of seven wickets with overs to spare. After the Barnards Green game was abandoned Wellington had slipped to tenth and were looking for a change of fortunes against Himley. With the side boosted with the inclusion of Joe Clarke hopes were high, however they were soon dashed as Wellington suffered a resounding defeat. Batting first they failed to adapt to the conditions and were scuttled for 159 all out. Wendell Wagner stood firm with 65 but Himley’s experienced Chris Boroughs took three for 35. Wendell, again, took the fight to Himley by taking a wicket with his second ball but it was to no avail, Worcestershire’s Tom KohlerCadmore helped guide Himley to a comfortable victory inside 35 overs. Hopefully the turnaround has started with the win against Sutton Coldfield. Wellington currently eighth in the league are at home to Bridgnorth on the 8 August, at home to Old Hill on the 13, away at Attock on the 20, and the Bank holiday weekend sees Wellington at home to Smethwick on the 27 and away at Dorridge on the 29. All games start at 12 noon.
