U.n.I and FCN under fire from university after controversial wristbands hit the freshers market
Ever regretted the night before? At least your picture didn’t go viral.

CLUB promoters FCN and U.n.I have been criticised by UCLan due to having an unofficial freshers wristband and Facebook page allegedly connected their product with the university, misinforming students of it's supposed endorsement. The Facebook page was swiftly removed after a cease and desist order was made to the social networking site. A university spokesperson explained that these actions were carried out to keep students correctly informed that these wristbands and facebook pages were in fact 'unofficial': "The University and Students’ Union decided to act after it became clear that many new students were purchasing fresher event wristbands from

unofficial websites thinking the activities were in some way endorsed by UCLan and the SU." “The University worked in conjunction with the SU team to ensure that Facebook groups which were promoting these fresher events removed the names of the University and the Students’ Union from their promotional materials. “Some of these Facebook groups did not comply with our request and so we asked Facebook to intervene using Facebook’s standard complaints procedure.” Darren Ofsarnie, Company Director of Future Clubnights (FCN), says that UCLan were picking on FCN individually, instead of tackling other companies doing the same thing. "Every year without fail – not just me, but every promoter in this city calls their page ‘UCLan Freshers 2013’. “There are still three or four pages
out there that haven’t been taken down that say ‘UCLan Freshers 2013’ or something similar. “We do it every year. Every time we do an event, we do relate the events to being ‘official freshers events’ but we never put ‘official’ and ‘UCLan’ next to each other." The move to produce the wristband came swiftly after it was announced that there would not be an official UCLan freshers wristband produced by the Students’ Union: “In previous years the university have run a wristband and excluded all the bars and clubs around Preston from being a part of this wristband. “So we were never originally going to do one. But when we did, we contacted Club 53. “If I’m being truthful with you I just think we’re being victimised here. We had 400 more likes than the official UCLan freshers page at the time they
pulled that page. “We wanted to change the name of the page but obviously with Facebook you can’t do that so it got pulled, which I understand, and don’t have a problem with. “The thing that annoys me is that there are still other promoters out there with ‘official freshers wristband’ written all over their pages that weren’t touched.” More than 400 wristbands have been sold so far according to FCN, and roughly 300 tickets for individual freshers-related events. Freshers fortnight, starting Sunday 15 September will include acts such as Wheatus, S Club 7 and Lucy Spraggan. A Union spokesman said: “We would urge all UCLan students to act with caution when purchasing event wristbands. “Official SU events can only be purchased from the SU reception or online from SU the website.”

ney. The Union is more than just a building or a bar (although the bars are pretty awesome). It is an organization led by students and run independently of the University, with the simple aim of making life better for students. University is about so much more than a degree. It’s a time when you can mould yourself into the person you
want to become. The Union offers a whole range of volunteering opportunities for you to develop as a leader. You may choose to step-up in your club or society and become a committee member, you may help shape your degree as a course rep, or you may even choose to run as an elected officer like myself! Whatever you are looking to get out
of your university experience, your Union is the key to making it happen. The Student Affairs Committee (SAC) were five students elected in as full-time, paid officers by students like you to lead the Union in each of our specialist areas. Look out for us over Freshers’ and throughout the term, and check out the Union website for more details on everything we do!”
right to call itself this during the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. But in reality it is the size of a medium-large town with a population of roughly 130,000 people. So it is not really a city. Well, not in my book anyway. That though is a nothing argument and you have landed in an area with a hell of a lot to offer. Dotted through the city are several beautiful, spacious parks such as Moor Park - which you’ll become accustomed with if you join one of the SUL football leagues - or Avenham Park which sits elegantly on the bank of the river Ribble.
Both of these parks, and the various others throughout Preston, are brilliant places to meet friends when the Sun decides to make an appearance. Now then the weather. Yes it rains a lot here, don’t let anyone tell you any different so if you do not already own a rain coat I would advise getting hold of one sharpish. For that you can simply pop into town and visit somewhere like the St. Georges’ Centre or Fishergate which is home to Primark. Enough of the boring stuff though. A lot of you will want to know where is the best night out and our Culture Editor
,Chris Copestake, has that covered in our official guide to Freshers 2013. That said, my personal favourite has to be Source Bar, perhaps that is because I worked there during my third year but also because the people in there are some of the nicest you will meet while here in beautiful Lancashire. I know I can not wait to meet all of you and I will be about throughout Freshers week and beyond ruthlessly promoting student media within the Union so keep your eyes peeled. And finally, have an absolutely great Freshers. These are the times of your lives so get out there and enjoy it!

UCLan Student and Managing director of Rebel Marketing and Promotions Ltd., Jack Barron, spoke out recently about his company’s poor treatment by local nightclub Evoque. In an exclusive interview with Pluto, he told us about how he wants to distance himself and his business from “shady business practices that are happening” in and around the Nightclub scene in Preston. “Rumours have already started circulating [about] the reasons I’ve left before term started and that it was due to performance,” he stated, “Again, to protect my reputation, I think it’s right, that I get the right version of events.” According to him, he was handed his two weeks notice by nightclub Evoque after being allegedly told by club manager Zane Woods that he “wanted to go it alone”. Mr Barron was quick to deny performance rumours claiming that he hadn’t actually had the opportunity to do much at this stage as the “audience hadn’t arrived yet.” Rebel Marketing and Promotions Ltd. is a student led and student run company that actively recruits students in order to give them paid work and experience in the promotions industry. Mr Barron stressed that, because of the contract being cut with Evoque, he had to let go of 10 students who he had previously employed due to lack of work to give them. His company were bought in to promote events over freshers for Evoque, who made him invest quite a bit of money into kitting out his team. “The venue demanded that I buy 10,000 tickets, with their name on, which cost me £500, knowing that they were going to fire me off. [Evoque]
NEW START... It’s not just a new disco ball being put in Evoque after promo team is kicked out made me buy uniforms, which matched their uniforms at my expense, made me match my public liability and employee liability to their requirements, all under the knowledge that they were going to fire me off at some point. So it’s now cost me to the tune of £1,000 without giving me the chance to earn it back.” Mr Barron’s company has been replaced by competing promotions team U.N.I and FCN who are running the
controversial “official UCLan freshers” despite cease and desists orders from the University. This is also despite the fact that U.N.I’s dealings with Evoque (then Lava) were terminated after reported cases of “gross misconduct” of U.N.I staff against Lava employees. Speaking on behalf of U.N.I and FCN, Darren Ofsarnie, Head of FCN, claimed that Evoque were the ones who ap-

EAMUS Heaney was recognised internationally as one of the greatest poets of all time. Often cited as the greatest Irish poet since WB Yeats, he was made an honorary fellow at the University of Central Lancashire in 2003. Poetry was just one of the arrows in the quiver of a man of many talents. He was also a translator, a broadcaster and a prose writer. However, it is his poetry that he will be most remembered for. They covered a broad range of topics but one thing that never changed was their unerring ability to consistently have an impact on the reader. NEWS IN BRIEF
Westlife singer to open new club Popworld
Former Westlife singer Brian McFadden is set to make an appearance in Preston to open a brand new nightclub in the City. Popworld, on Church Street, will replace the popular Reflex franchise, with doors set to open for the big unveiling on Friday 13th of September. Operated and owned by the largely successful Stonegate Pub Company, there have been a total of fifteen new jobs created at the new nightspot, which boasts VIP booths and a new sound and lighting systems at a reported investment cost of £200,000. The news will be unwelcome for some UCLan students, who were regulars at the previous establishment, Relfex. There are various other branches of Popworld open throughout England, with the chain trading in popular student cities such as Liverpool, Birmingham & Southampton, amongst others. The news comes alongside reports that the adjoining building to the new Popworld site on Church Street, formerly TSB bank, is soon to open as another branch of the popular nationwide bar chain J D Wetherspoons. The company already run the popular establishment, The Greyfriar, in the city centre.
proached them and not the other way round. They also strongly deny that any backroom deals had been done to their knowledge and there were, in his words, “No secret meetings.” When we attempted to get into contact with the general manager of the newly opened club, Evoque, who was responsible for the change in promotions team, he was unfortunately unavailable for comment.

when he wrote: “Be advised, my passport’s green. No glass of ours was ever raised, to toast the Queen.” During the troubles in Northern Ireland, he came under pressure to take sides and received some criticism for his refusal to do so. His writing on the violence often sought to put it into historical context and he also wrote personally for friends that died as a result. Talented even as a boy, he was sent on a scholarship to St Columb’s College in Derry at the age of 12. From there he attended Queen’s University, Belfast, to read English. He moved into teaching, notably returning to Queen’s University as a lecturer before becoming Head of English at Carysfort College – a teacher training school. In 1972 he gave up life as a full-time academic to become a freelance writer after the success of his first poetry
collection, Death of a Naturalist. It was only in 1975 with the release of Then In North, that his work took a darker tone after the violence had begun. His work also celebrated the bravery of those who continued with everyday life in Northern Ireland during this time. Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, his reputation continued to blossom. Unlike many of his contemporaries, who were withdrawn and reserved about their work, Heaney was happy to discuss the details of his poems and was capable of telling jokes at his own expense. His legacy was sealed in 1995 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Northern Irish poet Michael Longley said of Heaney: “Just his presence filled a room; his marvellous poems filled the hearts of generations of readers.”

Union welcomes new international students to UCLan
THE Atrium was a buzz with activity for the first time in three months on Monday evening following a successful international welcome night. The Union held event allowed new international students to meet for the first time with free food and drink the incentive to draw them out of their halls. Union President Ben Latham said: “We were very happy to welcome newly arrived international students into the Union with a drinks reception on Monday night. “The evening was a big success with many friendships forged amongst the scores of students in attendance, with lots of students planning out their Freshers’ activities together.” Over 200 students attended, giving many of them a first taste of the Students’ Union and what it has to offer.

Revamp for Club 53 THE upstairs bar in 53 Degrees has had a summer renovation and rebrand. Now known as Club 53, the Union joined forces with the university and spent an undisclosed figure in the region of £40,000 on the works. This has included the removal and replacement of the DJ booth to provide better viewing to customers. They have also fully remodelled the raised platform and booth area at the rear of the venue, knocking down the
walls that were previously obstructive to the booths. A Union spokesman said: “The new work has been undertaken with students in mind. “We wanted to provide a space not only for gigs but one that could be utilised by societies for their own volunteer led events.” Societies can now book the space through Gareth Pye in the Students’ Union who is offering to underwrite student led events.

NIGEL EVANS QUITS AS DEPUTY SPEAKER AFTER SEX CHARGES
CONCRETE JUNGLE... The Union want to build an outdoor classroom
CHARGED... Mr Evans has vowed to clear his name SOUTH Ribble MP and Deputy Speaker to the House of Commons, Nigel Evans, has resigned after being charged with offences including sexual assault, indecent assault and rape against seven men. Mr Evans is accused of eight offences in total dating between 2002 and 2013, the Crown Prosecution Service said. Following the charges, Mr Evans released a statement: "May I reassure everyone at this time that I will robustly defend my innocence. "I have today answered bail following complaints I have said were incredulous. "Whilst I am saddened that this case has not been closed today, I am certain of two things: firstly that I am innocent, and secondly that my innocence will be demonstrated. "Having informed my fellow deputy Speakers, Lindsay Hoyle and Dawn Primarolo, my
association chairman and staff, I can confirm I will now resign as deputy speaker. "However, I will continue to work hard for the people of Ribble Valley from the backbenches where I first started my political career in 1992." Mr Evans was a Conservative MP before becoming deputy speaker, a politcally neutral role, but he will not be returning to the Conservative benches but will instead, sit in the Commons as an independent backbencher, according to Tory sources. Mr Evans is expected to appear before Preston Magistrates' Court on 18 September. The two indecent assaults are alleged to have been committed between 1 January 2002 and 1 January 2004, the five sexual assaults allegedly happened between 1 January 2009 and 1 April 2013, and the alleged rape between 29 March and 1 April 2013.

THE Students’ Union has been successful in a bid for funds from the National Union of Students, securing £200k for a new scheme named, ‘The Green Ladder Project’. It is one 25 unions across the country to benefit from the £5m NUS initiative which is set to radically change the look of an area of campus. An outdoor classroom that aims to showcase sustainable building techniques in what has been described as ‘a high profile green transformation project’, is high on the agenda for the Union. Campaigns officer and project leader Sophie Bennett said: “We are really pleased to have been selected by NUS to deliver this project. “This funding from the NUS Green Fund Students will ensure that students get the chance to volunteer on campus and in the community and make a real difference to the environment through green transformation projects. It will be great for students to work with local community projects to lend a hand and build their skills. “This project will radically

Jamie Robinson has left the mill town of Burnley behind him to catalogue the world through his camera and forge a new career. Michael Bailey Editor-in-chief
A
LL too often the Twitter hashtag #firstworldproblems rears its ugly head on Twitter feeds around the developed world. Generally it is when your Wi-Fi has gone down and their all important, hilarious Snapchat has been lost to the ether #firstworldproblems. For some people though, particularly in areas of South-East Asia, the mere thought of having clean, running water is considered a luxury. And for one ex-UCLan student the need to document this, along with the extraordinary culture of these vibrate cultures, has led to a new career as a photojournalist travelling the world. Jamie Robinson, 25, spent time studying at UCLan’s sister college in Burnley before moving to the vibrant city of Manchester four years ago. It was shortly after this move to the big city that Jamie discovered his love for travel: “I had travelled South America first, about 3 years ago, and it was my first time out of the UK. “This then led to me heading to South East Asia in 2012 for six months. “It was here that i decided to take along a DSLR camera to help capture my initial love of travel.” It was an inspired decision and Jamie soon discovered a whole lot more about himself and even more so, the path his career was set to take: “It was here [South East Asia] that I realised I loved to capture that bundle of energy and emotion of the local people. “I have got to push though, that I have always enjoyed picking up various types of cameras in the past from quite a young age - but I’ve really loved digital recently.”Following his time in South East Asia Jamie has been travelling ever since and documenting it all through his very own website. Most recently he travelled to India and Nepal - two very contrasting trips: “India and Nepal were two very different experiences. “India was saturated in culture, traditional values and lovely, welcoming inhabitants, with incredible diverse people. “It now ranks first out of the 17 countries I have visited and it will be very hard for it to be surpassed. “Nepal was also a lovely country but
it's a place I would call 'touristy' - meaning you get a mixture of both tourists and travellers. “There’s nothing wrong with this but the country adheres to the more touristy side and things have become very commercial. “Overall, it has been a mixture of emotion, experiences and customs.” His talent behind the lens and his natural ability to immerse himself within the culture of each and every nation he visits has led to him being scouted as an up-and-coming photographer. This had a huge emphasis on his most recent travels: “I have been taking photographs for numerous publications to cut a long story short. “It has taken up much of my time while I travelled but I loved it. It was essentially doing and incorporating both of my loves into one big photo-journalistic smoothy. “My highlight of this trip was definitely a place in North East India in an area of Punjab named Varanasi. “It was here that I took my favourite images of my trip and, with its incredibly traditional clothing, river bathing and narrow alley-ways, it served very well for both my eye and my lens.” Homeless
Despite the beauty of places like Varanasi, Jamie has also come face-toface with some of the more disturbing sides of life in a third world country: “The homelessness around the world always strikes a cord when i witness it. “The most affected place for me was Amritsar, in Punjab, India where I saw a very young boy sleeping in front of a carpark extractor fan to stay cool. “He was very skinny and had to fend for himself.” It was heart wretching to have to say no to young children begging but the problem is not just limited to India: “It was also here where I had a young boy knock on my taxi window for change in the rain. “It really does break my heart but if you give money out all of the time then it kind of supports them to stay on the streets. “Manchester's homeless problem is a big thing for me and I plan on helping them this winter to do my part for my home country.” Having to contend with missing home was another demon that Jamie had to deal with while on his travels: “I miss my
family in Burnley but I head back home once a week - when I’m in the UK - to see them all. “I don't really miss Burnley as a place though. I miss home in Manchester sometimes and its comforts of central heating, hot water and a nice cup of tea
“
I believe that anything you put your heart and soul into results in a great outcome.”
in the morning but then again - that's very rare as I love to be able to become accustomed to other countries accommodation types and it's all part of the travel experience.” Back on his travels, the opportunity to be absorbed in the culture is perhaps the biggest draw to him: “I call it an honour, because thats how it makes me feel, honoured. “It stirs something deep inside to learn how so many cultures live and survive. “The variations are endless and I have only experienced a minority of what the world has to offer, but that is the fun of the next adventure.” Sometimes though, the culture shock can have a very steep learning curve: “It can be difficult when the 'culture shocks' come streaming through - for example, the spitting of the Indian culture, or the openness of going to the toilet wherever in Bolivia. “And even the animal abuse of dogs and livestock that I have witnessed in most countries. “It's not so much a problem, but different to me and I understand that the ways these people live is different to mine. “I struggle yes, but I learn to understand that their socialisation of animal welfare or toilet pleasantries are just not the same as mine.” Passion
Behind all the need to be absorbed in the culture of foreign lands is something else. Something that keeps on driving this young man from East Lancashire to keep on going and taking pictures. “My passion drives me through and through - and sometimes seeing other travel photographers images. “I like stiff competition and even though I love to apply relationships, communication and adhesions to my photograph subjects, I do like to experiment where I can to find other perspectives that I can work with.”
It is this passion that is pushing Jamie on further and the potential to be paid fulltime to travel is spurring him on to be better: “After my first proper year in this industry and after having done so many assignments and gaining my first exhibition, I can really see myself going far. “After all, I believe that anything you put your heart and soul into results in a great outcome. “In five years I would like to have sold many images, have my own gallery and be doing work for the much larger travel photography corporations in the industry where I’d be getting paid to do both of my passions - travelling and taking photographs. “I have faith in myself and faith in my photography.” With his mind still firmly on the future Jamie pin-points a inhospitable part of the world as the location of a potential trip: “Alaska has always been a place that has stirred my imagination for its landscapes and wildlife. “Now while I do love the people of the world I also have a secret passion for my four legged friends too. “I'd love to sit for weeks trying to spot brown bears, caribou or bison and documenting their natural behaviour.” For now he must settle for being back in the UK but with his first ever exhibition quickly approaching this photographer has a very bright future ahead of him. You can see Jamie’s beautiful work first hand when his exhibition opens on 25 October for two days, 6pm-9pm, which will also include a talk from the man himself about his experiences at:

As photographs emerged of suspected chemical attacks against Syria’s own people, the already huge civil war they have been fighting got drastically worse overnight that led to a vote in the UK Parliament as to whether our forces should engage in another foreign war. Dave Rose discusses the lead up to these events and the overwhelming sense of De Ja Vu many people are feeling.
T
HIS is a very difficult, complex subject, which I’ve spent a week contemplating whether I even have the knowledge to comment on. I’m still not sure I do, but I will attempt to offer some The beginning of this can be traced back to the Arab Spring. A period of unrest and revolution against various Arab states, beginning in Tunisia in December 2010 before quickly spreading to Egypt, Libya and Yemen among many other states by the beginning of 2011. In all of those states (though not in Syria, Iraq, Sudan and half dozen other Arab states which saw protests) the incumbent leadership was deposed (twice in Egypt), often very violently, as in the case of Gadaffi. Often these leaders were autocratic despots, corrupt and usually doing unspeakably cruel things to the people of these nations while attempting to use increased censorship to silence critics and restore order by the sword. The Syrian people did protest, but not with the same violent potency as in Libya and Tunisia. Well, not until 15 March 2011, when huge civil unrest began in the city of Daraa (known in the region as “The Cradle of the Revolution”) and quickly spread nationwide.
“
Often these leaders were autocratic despots, corrupt and usually doing unspeakably cruel things to the people.”
Unlike previous protests, these kept growing louder and louder, and the retaliation of the government grew more and more disturbing. Moving from large scale arrests and torture of prisoners, to wide scale attacks on towns and cities housing dissenters; ultimately leading to the deaths of thousands upon thousands of innocents. Soldiers unwilling to fire on their own people were executed. This naturally escalated from an up-
DESPERATE... Innocent Syrians are desperate for the fighting to end rising into a flat out civil war, with the resistance taking the form of the Free Syrian Army (FSA). This continued for the next eight months. Escalating in scale before the first ceasefire attempt, spearheaded by Kofi Annan, acting as UN–Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria. It was an absolute failure on pretty much every level. Fighting continued during the diplomatic period and both the FSA and the Syrian Government broke the terms of the ceasefire repeatedly. This eventually led to Annan’s resignation, and the fighting, by July 2012 to spread to Damascus and Aleppo. What has led to international involvement beyond the UN’s attempts at a ceasefire, is the allegation that the Syrian Government used chemical weapons on their own people. Several unsourced images of people allegedly killed by attacks emerged and were used as evidence. These images have led to several western governments calling for military action against the Syrian Government, most notably President Barack Obama, President François Hollande of France and Prime Minister David Cameron on the strongest warpath. Cameron in particular showing an unwillingness to actually wait for the results of the UN inquiry. This may sound familiar, because if you replace “chemical” with “of mass destruction” you get the basis for the War in Iraq. You might have heard of it, it was quite a mess, where the US and UK became embroiled in a bitter war only for the rest of the world to realise that, lo and behold, Iraq had little to no capability to launch nuclear weapons. The reaction of political figures is so
close that it in fact has instilled the opposite reaction to a western populous jaded by 12 years of constant western involvement in warfare in the Middle East.
“
It is a very complex situation that has already exploded. A lot more care should be taken around it, for the sake of the Syrian people if nothing else.”
The backlash, outside of the rightwing mainstream media has been somewhat stronger than expected, to put it mildly, and Cameron was mercifully forced to backpedal, and wait until at least the results of the inquiry come in. It is easy to see why people were not fooled. Cameron’s reasons for entering this war were clearly based on his rather muted popularity in the UK, and by fanning jingoistic pride. Channeling Thatcher and having his own Falklands moment; he hoped he would return from Damascus a great war hero. In the end it possibly left his position more fragile than ever, having been very handily defeated in parliament. Obama’s reasoning may possibly be on similar grounds, attempting to distract from the revelations regarding the NSA’s spying and wiretapping of pretty much every single communication you have ever made. The result of this has shattered his reputation as ‘progressive’ pretty much to tiny bits. Distracting people form civil liberties violations with war has a long proud history, one that Obama continues with
a renewed vigor, pretty much publicly chastising Cameron’s backpedalling and initially planning to continue plans to strike Syria. The lack of support from Congress kind of at least delayed that idea. So what should be done about this situation? That’s the biggest question, and one I have absolutely no political qualification to answer. Nevertheless, all previous examples of larger nations getting involved in civil wars (including Vietnam, the first Afghanistan campaign and the HutuTutsi conflicts in the 1990s) have only served to fan the flames of conflict and do untold harm, so it would seem reasonable to back off from conflict. However, if there is proof that Syria did use chemical weapons, that is one of the biggest war crimes in the book and one should not be allowed to use them with impunity, especially on one’s own people. It is a very complex situation that has already exploded. So a lot more care should be taken around it, for the sake of the Syrian people if nothing else. The United Nations’ first ceasefire may have collapsed but it is still the collective that will have the power to defuse this conflict. Not the actions of rogue nations, whether they believe their input to be right or not. Also, could we just ask that when making complex decisions that will result in the deaths of thousands, that you don’t play poker on a Smartphone?

NEWS IN BRIEF
LGBT rep Alex Re steps down from new role
THE Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Representative, Alex Re, has announced he is to step down from his position with immediate effect. Mr Re stormed to an uncontested election win in March 2013 following a successful year as head of the LGBT Society. He said: “I would like to have the time spent on my third year of my degree. “I would not be satisfied to be passive in the role so I felt it best to allow someone else the chance.” The decision of Mr Re to step down from his position will trigger a by-election for the now vacant role with a date yet to be set by the Union but it will possibly fall in line with by-elections for previously unfulfilled council positions. Mr Re added: “I'd just really like to be a supporter, rather than a leader while I get this crucial year over with. “I plan on continuing being a member [of the LGBT Society] this year so I can enjoy being part of the community with less of the stress.” A spokesman from the Union said: “Alex has shown the potential to be a great leader in a very short space of time and he will be sadly missed”.

Twerk your way to the top ladies because you don’t stand a chance Charlotte Alty
Deputy Comment Editor HALF of you have stopped reading at the mention of Miley Cyrus and the thought of her horrendous recent activity. For those still reading, a question, could you hum any of her songs right now? The answer is (well should be) no. Isn’t it weird for someone who is classed as a successful ‘singer’ you can’t remember any of her greatest hits off the top of your head, yet everywhere you look there are people talking about her? This is a prime example of what popular music from women have sadly become. She has just released a new music video where, for the most part, she parades around in an outfit that would even look out of place on a Saturday night in Preston. Then, not even 2 minutes later, she has taken off what little she was wearing and draped herself around an actual wrecking ball. All this barely a week after her
VMA performance, wherein Twitter tells me she did a thing called ‘twerking’ (now in the Oxford English Dictionary, another reason to feel nauseas), and Will Smith and his family were downright unimpressed. Most singers in the Top 40 are guilty of this of course. Do something crazy and people will talk/tweet about you, this then leads to more album sales, and more appearances on TV, to do even more crazy stuff and the vicious circle continues.
“
Female singers feel the need to put on a show that is only fit to be seen on late night pay-per-view”
It only seems like yesterday that Madonna and Britney were locking lips for attention at the same awards event. The child star has even admitted that her aim at the VMAs was to ‘make history’ and she also claims
she doesn’t listen to all the negative comments. Which must mean she is blocking out quite a big proportion of opinions. Basically she is a self confessed attention seeker, and evidently she does not mind whether that attention is good or bad. Some are defending Miley by saying she is young and ‘having fun’, Robin Thicke is however married so what happens when her having fun is morally quite disgusting? Is that really a good message to be sending out to her younger fans? ‘Grind on a married man, it’s fun!’ In contrast, all the One Direction lads have to do is strut around a bit, hold their arms out to the camera and say they love whoever is on the other end and girls all around the world go wild. You never see these guys rolling around naked and oily, jumping into a bath with strategically placed bubbles, or even ‘twerking’ (enjoy that mental image). Why is it that males can walk around fully clad, looking like Armani has been sick on them, and still be desirable.
Yet female singers feel the need to put on a show that is only fit to be seen on late night pay per view. It seems that this is still ‘a man’s world’ and to get fame and riches some women clearly need to objectify themselves. This wouldn’t particularly bother me if it solely affected the Mileys, Rihannas, Minajs, the ones who chose that way, but these people are now becoming icons to the younger generation and what they see on the screen can easily warp their view of what the world wants to see and what people should do to be successful and happy. People say swearing and violence on screens is a danger to kids, but I would say inflicting these kids with complexes about their bodies and lifestyles is a much more heinous act. I think we all agree it’s time Miley put some clothes on and became the nice young lady we all remember from Nickelodeon; she really does not suit the ‘attention-whore’ image. Ah look, here comes Lady Gaga with a new album, surely she won’t be doing anything outrageous to gain the limelight…
DANGEROUS MINDS... This could be the meeting that led Miley astray

THE new season is fast approaching, closely followed by darker nights and cooler temperatures. This year, Autumn/Winter is a many faced woman, with a few alter egos under her coat - her blush pink coat to be precise. One day, a tough mix of leathers and buckles, the next day an angelic vision of fluffy pastels. Amongst the tartans and winter florals, one trend resonates throughout; grace and femininity. Cast away the androgyny because it’s time to be all woman. REBEL REBEL
Meet Little Miss Punk, the attitude clad hell raiser. Think the same spikes and studs from last Autumn/Winter just amplified against tartans, leather and leopard print. The palette is naturally monochrome with flashes of reds, gold and silver. Plain backdrops make the perfect setting for metalwork detail, chains and buckle adding a tough edge to your wardrobe this season. Hemlines are always above the knee
with trousers skin tight and dominant, wallflowers need not apply.
Woman or grizzly bear is never a good look.
Pastels are the perfect transitional trend this year. Not a one to usually grace the Autumn/Winter catwalks, subdued hues have transgressed from spring and have grown up for those winter days. Romantic blushes, soft lilacs and delicate blues are the key palette here. Wear them head-to-toe or mix them up with hints of black and soft greys. For a subtle nod to this trend, invest in a pastel coat to still make a statement.
Decoration isn’t just for the Christmas Tree. Glistening all over the runway, embellishments made their way from decadent dresses to the everyday jeans and jumpers. This time around sparkling in the day is far more charming than at night. Clash girly glitters with grunge outfits, and pair sequins with denims. It’s easy to go crazy with this look though, instead focus on subtle beading and delicate gems on just the one item. These adornments offer a little luxury to winter wardrobes, so take centre stage and shimmer and shine.
PRETTY IN PASTELS
TOUCHY FEELY
Whether it’s smooth vinyl or fluffy knits this Autumn/Winter makes way for all things textured. Once a fashion faux-pas wet looks ruled the catwalks; anything PVC is a must. Clash chunky knits on high gloss fabrics to make the perfect pairing. Accessorize with furs and feathers on a canvas of leathers and sleek fabrics. Experimentation is the key with this trend as anything goes as long as it offers that ‘touchy-feely’ value. Be careful not to overdo it - Cat

AS we say goodbye to the S/S season of 2013, we also say goodbye to the some of the season’s hottest street styles. Leanne rewinds on some of her favourite trends. MONOCHROME
THE ultimate classic combination; black and white. It’s simple a but completely underestimated stye for both men and women! The touches of colour and hints of gold jewellery screams class and style. WITH mom jeans and denim dungarees making a comeback, it’s no surprise the festival scene was shrouded in the stuff!
Acid wash seems to have taken off this summer with the outdated style appearing on last season’s catwalks it was a dead cert for trend forecasters. Team a denim piece with strong accessories, a studded bag seen below or a pair of 60’s sunglass to complete the look.

THAT dreaded chill in the air is fast approaching, October is round the corner which means winter is well and truly on its way! With every season comes the must have new trends so don’t be left out in the cold this winter with a drab wardrobe to match! A real stand out trend that this autumn/winter 13 is Winter Pastels! Think milkshake, candy floss, lavender fields and buttercup yellows! Take some style inspiration from the masters at Celine or Victoria Beckham to achieve the ultimate pastel crush!
WINTER BLOOMS
The older, more sophisticated sister of summer florals, winter blooms offer a melancholy mood. Bouquets of feminine prints are set against burnt oranges, deep reds and blacks teamed with chiffons, satins and silks to provide a romantic glamour to an otherwise gloomy winter’s day. Found mostly on dresses and skirts, this season’s florals lend themselves to womanly shapes and ooze lady-like allure. Florals for winter? Ground-breaking!
floral and geometric prints have been dominating the trouser department this summer. You can’t go wrong with a plain vest and statement necklace as seen below, for a more sophisticated look team it with a plain blazer.
ORIENTAL GRUNGE
Let pastels collide this fall with autumnal tones; think femininity meets the great outdoors! Don’t be afraid to pair mints and baby blues with harsh hues such as plums and greys because after all opposites attract! Not only colour clash but also, experiment with materials! Remember this season is all about releasing your inner lady! Accentuate your womanly curves and nip in that waist of yours with pencil skirt or a simple pair of cigarette pants! Embrace the renowned Mad Men silhouette, nod to Betty Draper a.k.a January Jones. Now girls I think you are more than prepared to be unleashed into the world of sorbet!
Get the look
THE atypical prints of cherry blossom and oriental robins have been tainted by dark silks and pale embroidery, bringing a new style to the stunning three dimensional patterns. An oriental jacket as seen below can be worn with leggings, loafers and dainty jewellery as the jacket will be doing all the talking in this outfit.

A progression from the classic cat eye look & 60’s trend over summer, the slightly exaggerated flick of liner & symmetrical lower lash shapes have a futuristic vibe this season. The key to pulling this trend off is to merge a classic look with a hint of space age quirkiness. Shows such as Dior and Rag & Bone use metallic toned liners and under eye detail to add a galactic edgy feel to the iconic Twiggy look.
Perfectly finished skin
THERE is no doubt that the popular dewy skin look has taken over for many years on the catwalk. But this season a luxuriously preened to perfection face with a hint of velvety texture is set to be the one. Beautifully dusted with a coat of loose powder and perfected with foundation, this matte finish and groomed look has been seen on the faces of models at many Autumn/winter 13 catwalks, from Chloe to Balmain, Victoria Beckham to Stella McCartney; each showing us how to embrace satin skin.

Wet-look grunge locks
WHETHER it is slicked back into a low ponytail or took high into a masculine quiff grunge is back this season. A tangled wet look & the no effort messed up crop have been seen in nearly every show. For those of us that aren’t as daring as some, try a neatly parted gelled down style for a slightly simpler take on effortless grunge. Seen at shows from Jason Wu & Prada.

Romance
Love is complex so let our writers hold your hand and guide you through it
"You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams." ― Dr. Seuss
It’s very simple. When a man loves a woman and she is worthy of his love, everything feels so easy and natural, writes Mona Hadad.

THERE shouldn’t be any major pride issues, or walls built too high to be broken. Take the mind games for nothing else than what they are. Stop with the lying, the backstabbing, and the prevarications. Just be honest, humble and down to earth. It will benefit you a lot more in the long run. Nobody wants to end up lonely, unnoticed and full of regret. If you want it you go and get it, grab it, show it and embrace it. Don’t make things harder than they already are. And always be true to yourself. When you try coming across as perfect, it becomes more obvious that you aren’t. The one you are meant to be with will love everything about you even the things you hate the most. Instead of being scared to get hurt you should prove your fears wrong.
Every woman should be looked at as if she was a real life princess. Every woman deserves to have her man professing his relationship to her in public and in private. But the most important recipe to achieve a successful relationship is patience. You shouldn’t settle for anything less than butterflies. Even if waiting feels like a lifetime, you shouldn’t give up hope of ever finding a decent man who could push your very inner buttons and bring out feelings you never knew existed. Because until the right one comes along, you will most likely meet men that were meant to cross your path for other reasons than to stay. When you experience pain you become stronger and when someone breaks you it makes you softer. And these are exactly the characteristic that
might be needed for the right guy. It’s just up to you whether you turn your failures into the biggest lesson in your life. I know this much by now, good guys don’t grow on trees, once you have one don’t let it go, you’ll end up a lifetime trying to find someone just like him. And you shouldn’t fall for someone because they are hard to get because it makes it just as easy to fall out of love for them the moment they give in. The thrill of the chase could have been the entire reason the relationship seemed exciting in the first place. It doesn’t necessarily take ages to realise that someone is right for you. Love doesn’t gauge you hence there’s no need to play hard to get or act like someone you are not just to impress someone you want. Love doesn’t do that to people. It is the most peaceful thing in the world.

Stirring up a treat on a student budget Food
Toma Sukyte Food Writer
COME September most of us students are so busy unpacking, settling in, meeting new friends, going out, partying, necessary shopping and necessary shopping (we’re talking a total renewal of your wardrobe) that they forget it would be good to eat once in a while. Okay, so the rumbling belly reminds you to grab a bite and your choice is a frozen “truly-home-made” beef lasagne? Good old beans on toast three times a day seven days a week? A cheap (most of the orders must be over a tenner), quick (sometimes delivery takes up to 40 minutes) and healthy (you can see a healthy glow of half a litre oil in a massive box of sweet and sour chicken) takeaway? Yes, these meal choices are just brilliant but if you don’t want to head into your overdraft to buy a pair of new jeans (the old ones are a bit tight after all those takeaways) by the end of

month, then consider cooking at home from scratch at least several times a week. It is cheaper, healthier and tastes better. Oh, and makes your mum proud. Try this simple yet scrumptious recipe and see it for yourself. Chicken stir fry with baby corn and bell pepper (Serves 2) Prep time: 10 mins Cooking time: 12 mins (If anyone cares, it contains 2 of your 5-a-day, winning!)
Ingredients: 250 g chicken, cut into bite-size chunks 8 baby corn, sliced 1 bell pepper (we used green but any will do), sliced 2 garlic cloves, minced or finely chopped 1/2 onion, sliced 1 tomato, sliced 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp oyster sauce 4 tbsp water 1/2 tsp ground pepper 1 tbsp oil Rice (to serve)
Firstly, have all the ingredients prepared – this will make it easier to cook later. You can start boiling rice at this point. For the stir fry heat oil in the pan and then fry garlic until fragrant, it only takes a minute. Don’t leave it unattended as it burns very quickly. Add chicken and stir fry for 3-4 minutes on a high heat until it browns a little bit. Add the vegetables and stir everything in the pan with a spatula. Reduce heat to medium and add soy sauce and oyster sauce. Stir in and fry for another five minutes. Add water if the dish becomes too dry. Add pepper and check the seasoning. You can always splash a little more soy sauce for more saltiness. Make sure the meat is cooked all the way through and the vegetables are slightly soft but still have a bite to them. Serve the meal over a bowl of white rice and enjoy! It wasn’t that difficult, was it?

Prep time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 20-25 minutes GREAT British Bake Off fever has struck and it seems that people everywhere are considering themselves the next Mary Berry. But while we can’t all make delicious homemade bread and gigantic pieces of chocolate covered art; there is one favourite which is as simple as it is scrumptious. To celebrate National Cupcake Week between September 16-22 we have the simplest recipe for delicious cupcakes which will be a real hit with your flatmates. Okay, so a cupcake a day probably won’t keep the doctor away, but it’s only once a year that we get to use it as an excuse for eating our own bodyweight in cake mixture. National Cupcake Week is an annual event designed to promote the sale of cupcakes in bakeries, cafés and supermarkets, with proceeds being donated to CLIC Sargent. The charity supports children and young people with cancer and their families. So far, more than £4,500 has been raised for CLIC Sargent. Whether you make them to sell for charity or simply to just enjoy for yourself- there is nothing better than the humble cupcake. Just follow our fool-proof recipe and taste the results for yourself.

meant that whenever housemates' friends came to visit and were given the introductory viewing of the picture, they'd mostly already seen it. "No way! That's him?" became the soundbite to define the latter half of my 2012. And to top the year off – making my Christmas nightmare come true in the process – Geordie Shore's Vicky Pattinson tweeted the photo out to her 900k+ followers. So what's the aftermath of being a viral star? In the grand scheme of things, not much. As long as you're not over-sensitive and can deal with countless people pointing and laughing at you for an indefinite period of time, you should be alright. Plus, if you type the words "Ron", "Hermione" and "Jesus" into Google images, it's the very first photo to appear. It's a legacy that basically puts me on the same cultural pedestal as Emma Watson and the son of God, and for that I'm thankful.
ON the 14th of October, 2012 (a Sunday), I woke up with a hangover and very little memory of the night before. But I did have a vague, unconscious understanding that at some point I'd definitely been making out with someone, which lifted my spirits a little. I went back to sleep. An hour or so later, a roar of laughter came cascading up the stairs towards my bedroom. "Ron!" I heard someone call out (I'm ginger, so – like every other redheaded male since the Harry Potter films – my housemates call me Ron), "You're gonna love this!" I knew then that I wasn't going to love it. I made my way downstairs and waded through a room of grins and pointing fingers, jabbing either at me or towards a laptop screen. I leaned in towards the source of all the laughter and saw the picture you see above. Then it dawned on me that the small ginger guy who was failing to stretch his arms around the girl in front of him was me. Referring back to what I've
learned from Heat's body language experts, I realised that I looked a lot more into it than her. There were a steady stream of Likes and comments amassing beneath it. "Dad asks if you're blowing her up," said my cousin. "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA," said my brother. After a week of being the primary topic of conversation wherever I seemed to go – the photo had almost 200 Likes by this point – I was hoping for anything that would deflect attention away from me; some kind of public celebrity freakout, a cataclysmic natural disaster – anything, really. Surely the joke would exhaust itself soon, I thought. It would peter out and die and I could go back to being an anonymous ginger boy again. I mean there was no way, was there, that this could get any bigger? A month or so earlier, my housemate had introduced me to a Facebook page called "Embarrassing Nightclub Photos
of the Week". You've probably seen it. It's got over 1.7 million Likes and is exactly what you'd expect it is – a page featuring embarrassing photos of people on nights out. Presumably the idea is that looking at them makes you feel slightly better about yourself the next morning as you wallow in a clammy, Jager-induced pit of misery. Unless, of course, you happen to be in the picture yourself. We’d joked around that someone might eventually post my photo on there. Just as the original fanfare among my own personal network of friends was beginning to die down, someone posted my photo on there. Not long after it was posted it had already accumulated 7,000 Likes and was rapidly spreading through messageboards and newsfeeds – just like wildfire, if wildfire was humiliating and made you want to shut your face in a door until no one could recognise you. If at first it was merely hugely embar-
rassing, after this development it became hugely exhausting too. Again and again I'd find myself cornered at school or in the street and forced to talk through the story with random classmates. I had weird uni bros who'd never said hello to me before coming up to me in the library, bumping my fist and telling crap, cruel jokes. In the end, my shame turned to weary tedium. I felt more upset for all the horrible comments that were aimed at the girl I kissed than anything else. Online too, the comments began pouring in. I don't really want to repeat them here but none of them were particularly complimentary and the HUGE majority referred to me as fucking "Ron". I sincerely hope the girl – who, to the world, is still just a nameless, faceless fan of crimson handbags – never saw the online reaction to the photo. It wasn't long before the Likes inched their up through 8,000, 9,000 and past the 10,000 mark. That particular detail

are the person next to you will) what a typical Snapchat that they send or receive contains, they’d more than likely say a selfie, a picture of their meal or a video of their domestic pet. However, it would seem that not everyone is satisfied with a photo of a potato or a Snapchat of a fat cat. Some look to Snapchat as a means by which to exchange content of a strictly adult nature. It only takes a quick trawl through rival social networking website Facebook for you to find a plethora of groups and pages entitled ‘SNAPCHAT LEAKED’ or ‘SNAPCHAT ADULTS ONLY’. These pages often contain photos taken by Snapchat users who have shown a little too much of their ‘selfie’ before sharing it with other users on their contact list. This is where the use of the dreaded screenshot comes into play. A user can screenshot the video or image sent to them thus enabling them to keep it forever, flying in the face of the apps ten second rule. A notification is sent to the victim of the screenshot, however this is scant consolation and serves only as a warning that your contact, the screen-
shotter, now has possession of a photo you didn’t necessarily want them to own. It is these people who fall victim to screenshotting, a fate worse than death which could result in your bare posterior or your timid manhood being shared on one of these grim pages much to the joy of frenzied hordes of Facebook users who, upon such images, will quickly like, share and comment. A deadly trinity of actions that would quickly draw humiliation from even the most thick-skinned of individuals. As an avid user of the app, I stand vehemently against the use of screenshotting on Snapchat, and try to avoid people who I refer to simply as ‘screenshotters’. For me, taking a screenshot on Snapchat is about as annoying as those people who constantly post pictures of themselves on Facebook like everybody else actually gives a damn, you just don’t do it. Unfortunately, not everyone lives by such principles. I’d like to make the point that not everyone uses the app as a way to sate such a depraved thirst, myself included. I wouldn’t inflict that on my friends. No . A Snapchat from me would more

IF you had asked me what Snapchat was five months ago, I would have stared blankly back at you. Now, a few months on and nearly 2,000 Snapchats later, I could wax lyrical about the photo-sharing app until you wished you never asked in the first place! But why has this app got myself and millions like me across the world so hooked? For those perhaps less ‘with it’, technologically speaking of course, Snapchat is an application for your smart phone which allows you to send and receive both edited and unedited photos and videos to another user. The catch being that the media sent is only viewable for a maximum of ten seconds. Sound simple enough? Well it is this uncomplicated formula which has given rise to an estimated 200 million exchanges being made by users each day. SICK and tired of aching days after a workout at the gym? Move over zumba, boxercise & yoga because it is time to try the latest exercise craze currently taking the USA by storm. Soon to hit a gym near you, aqua cycling is the brand new high calorie burning, low impact exercise class, what more could you want? Just like a regular spinning class the session lasts for around 45 minutes to an hour, but is based in a swimming pool with water at waist height. This new highly social class launched in New York in April 2013 and has spread like wild fire over America ever since. Aqua Cycling works by using the water as resistance to make you push harder than if you were doing a normal spinning class (12 times harder to be precise). Although this sounds more strenuous than normal, the major benefit is that the water actually cushions the impact on joints and muscles, easing aches & pains, creating a massage effect whilst exercising. A free massage while exercising this just gets better and better! It also improves cardiovascular circulation and is great for people with existing injuries and joint
pains. Using every muscle in the body during the workout, with a focus on abs and core strength, each person burns around 800 calories. Many celebrities are loving this new workout, either to get rid of that dreaded baby weight or to banish cellulite, can you believe it gets rid of cellulite? Sign us up now! It’s rumoured that Beyoncé used Aqua Cycling to lose all her baby weight after the birth of Blue Ivy.

Freshers’ Flu: fact or fiction? Image: Vogue
TREADING WATER... All the benefits of spinning and more
Victoria Hepworth Lifestyle Editor
BEING a Fresher is an experience you will never forget, and probably one of the best years of your life. Meeting new people, gaining a new found independence and studying a course that you love. But when you wake up after 14 consecutive late nights consisting purely of shots, shots, shots and more shots accompanied by the occassioal 3am greasy kebab, you probably won’t feel at your best. This is a phenomena that is universally identified as Freshers’ Flu by students across the country. But is there any truth in this diagnosis? Well after much research (sadly, not of the practical nature), we can conclude that Freshers’ flu does exist and is caused by a number of factors. Yes, the fact that you’re effectively posioning your bloodstream with alcohol every night probably isn’t great but even something as small the change in your
environment and living conditions has been seen to impact the immune system. You may be surpised to hear that your body gets a real shock when it’s taken out of it’s natural environment and moved into shared accommodation where there are new germs around that you are not yet immune to. It’s great to get to know your flat mates in the first few days, but getting really close isn’t good for your health. Whether it’s sharing drinks or getting more intimate, it can leave you facing a trip to the doctors. Sufferers of the dreaded Freshers’ flu are likely to present symptoms consistent with common flu; that’s a runny nose, headache, fever and the shivers! To prevent it you should make sure you have had your flu vaccination and have boosted your levels of Vitamin C to an optimum- so make sure you put some oranges on your first shopping list. So how do you treat it then? I’m afraid there’s no quick and easy wayyou simply need to admit defeat; get a decent night’s sleep, some proper
homemeade food (a tin of cold baked beans will not suffice), and drink plenty of fluids- we’re talking water, not alcohol which will only dehydrate you further. Stock your medicine cupboard with paracetomol, Lemsip, and Rennies. If you don’t end up using them, chances are one of your flatmates will. What’s the message then? Not to go out and have a good night? Of course not! Going out and having a good time, even if you can’t remember it the next day, is all part of the University experience. We are simply advising you not to over do yourself in the first week. Suggest a night in with your flatmates to break up the week where you can cook a meal together and watch a film. It will give you a chance to talk as a group, rather than shout across the club, and get some decent food inside you to get your body prepared in time for your next night out. Have a look at our Freshers’ guide for more tips on how to make the most of your first few weeks.

Review - Jamie Cleaver-Smith SHEFFIELD'S finest, Arctic Monkeys, are back with a bang with their incredible new album 'AM'. Two years after releasing their number 1 album Suck It And See, which saw the band adopt a brand new overall style, the Yorkshire four-piece return with their superb fifth album. It feels like an age since lead single 'R U Mine?' reached our ears, in fact it has been approximately 18 months since the band began to tease us with new material but one thing is for certain, AM was definitely worth the wait. The album has an incredibly mature sound which has clearly been constructed with care from start to finish. Track six, 'No. 1 Party Anthem' is a prime example of the gradual progression as artists the band members have made. Over the five albums the band has released, frontman Alex Turner has been responsible for some of the greatest rock n' roll songs of the last ten years. A track that stands out in that sense is

GROWTH deeply impacts an artist’s work. Growth and a looming fear of relapsing into a troubled past is perhaps the main driving point of the long awaited eighth album of Trent Reznor as part of his legendary project, Nine Inch Nails. An album five years in the making, ever since Nine Inch Nails’ ‘The Slip’, ‘Hesitation Marks’ presents a stern level of maturity, without the fear of revisiting old habits and reminiscing over the band’s former sound. The album is a serious growth spurt for Reznor musically as well as displaying a new form of visceral narration as he looks back at his troubled past as a decadent troubled rock star. Although lyrical craftsmanship was never an innate tool in Reznor’s arsenal, what ‘Hesitation Marks’ lacks in verbal narration it more than makes up for with an intensely persistent display of macabre electronica, which is exactly what we’ve come to know and love from Nine Inch Nails. Yet despite not being necessary perplexing, Trent Reznor’s lyrics successfully dwell on the issue of looking back into his drug fuelled pas and the looming fear of relapsing into spiralling into old habits, which would ruin the stability of his life if they ever resurfaced. By all means this is a nagging recollection of Trent Reznor in his heyday as one of the most debauched and morbidly disturbed rock sex symbols of the 90’s as told in a way only Reznor himself can. Despite being abundant with throbbing leathery electronic pulses, the
track four 'Arabella'. With this track in particular, you could be forgiven for mistaking it for a Led Zeppelin single. A bold statement that may be, however, the rise of the phenomenal Arctic Monkeys allows such comparisons to be made. The group show no signs of stopping putting out great music time after time and there is nothing to stop the Arctic Monkeys becoming the greatest British rock ‘n' roll band of our generation. When the band released their debut album 'Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not', there was a real buzz amongst UK rock fans that something big was about to happen. That record, released over seven years ago, sparked a frenzy around the world with its barrage of sing-along anthems. With AM, the excitement remains but it is a lot easier on the ears. The general tempo of the album is slower and it demonstrates how natural the production of this record was. With an album tour that began back in May and concludes in November, those fortunate enough to have tickets to an Arctic Monkeys show can count themselves extremely lucky. AM is an astounding and ground-breaking effort by the boys from Sheffield which propels them further into the limelight.
album’s first single ‘Came Back Haunted’ could hardly be hailed as the pinnacle of ‘Hesitation Marks’. Enter tracks such as the painfully visceral critique Reznor gives himself about his conformity to modern consumer diets on ‘Copy of A’ as well as the pumped up minimalistic angst-blaring ‘Disappointed’, which reverberates a sound from the band’s heydays of ‘The Downward Spiral’ up to ‘The Fragile’. Those are immediately followed by perhaps the first happy Nine Inch Nails song in existence. ‘Everything’, which at times has more in common with a coastline bred pop punk group than the forever angry for every and yet no good reason Nine Inch Nails we have come to love. It seems that whilst Reznor’s poisonous rage was aimed against the immoral oppressors of the world here; he is seen portraying a fear of the unpredictability of the person in the mirror.

A head-first rocket-like ascent towards stardom is rarely achieved by bands, but when a strong emotional outcry blares out from the poignant lyrics, written by a girl once in love; it is hard for the public not to respond. Enter London Grammar, a trio comprising of mesmerisingly tender guitar riffs, a Florence Welsh reminiscent vocal display courtesy of the band’s leading lady Hannah Reid, and a knack for ambience most lo-fi indie bands would kill for. Shifting rapidly from low key performances in local pubs to two live Radio 1 gigs and two small European and American conquests within no more than a year. London Grammar’s debut album ‘If You Wait’ is set to create ripples global indie pop scene. Perhaps the crowning pieces of the record comprise of the beautifully layered second single ‘Wasting My Young Years’, followed by the poignantly whimsical ‘Sights’ and ‘Nightcall’ and the hauntingly dynamic pilot single from the full length ‘Metal And Dust’. A delightfully diverse side of the band is presented towards the end with the subtly upbeat ‘Flickers’, where Reid’s breath-taking vocals are supplemented by lo-fi tribal drums, alongside vocal additions from band members Major and Rothman. The final eponymous track closes off the album with an emotional vocal build up, much like the band’s trademark style, which effortlessly manages to grip one from the very beginning. A well deserved Upper 2:1.

The 1975 ‘The 1975’
Dirty Hit/Polydor
2.1
Review - Laura Brown It’s fair to say, 2013 has been The 1975′s year. After signing to UK indie label ‘Dirty Hit’ in 2012, they’ve gained a top 20 hit, played Glastonbury and this month opened for Bastille at the iTunes festival. Twelve months and 4 EP’s later the bands self-titled debut album has entered the charts at number one and it doesn’t disappoint in the slightest. The opening track of the album, ‘The 1975′, sounds like something you would find being played over the opening title sequence of a film. It’s the perfect start to the album and slowly introduces you to the bands sound. As the album progresses there does seem to be a mixture of music styles from from the catchy pop song, long track ‘Chocolate’ to the rock anthemic sounds of latest single ‘Sex’ to the instrumental film-soundtrack sound-

It feels like everything that the band sing about is coming straight from the heart. The album finishes with ‘Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You’. A ballad which almost gives listeners a chance to breath after the high energy of the album and really listen to the softer side of The 1975.

A new exhibition has opened at Preston’s very own Harris Museum, as York Art Gallery has lent Preston a rather special collection. Entitled ‘Masterstrokes’, the collection brings you the only chance to see some of York Art Gallery's finest paintings on this side of the Pennines. The exhibition features work from the past 600 years, from 15th century Italian art to works by David Hockney and LS Lowry. Dutch landscapes contrast with Walter Sickert's view of Venice and Paul Nash's Winter Sea. A portrait by Hogarth is complemented by EM Ward's Victorian interpretation of Hogarth's Studio. This is a rare opportunity to experience such a focused, yet diverse selection of oil paintings in the North West - don't miss it! Other artists featured include: Wiliam Etty, Bernadino Fungai, Albert Moore, Sir Matthew Smith, and William Powell Frith. Harris Museum, located at the heart of Preston City Centre just a five minute walk from campus, is open from 11am till 5pm on a Monday, and from 10am till 5 Tuesday through till Saturday. But best of all, entry is completely FREE. For further information, you can contact the Harris Museum Office on 01772 258248 between

Review - Michael Bailey AHA! Alan Partridge is back in our lives and it has been far too long to keep this comedy genius boxed up in the BBC archives. For those of you of the younger generation with no idea who Alan Partridge is, I honestly despair. You have had the death of British comedy thrust upon you with the likes of Miranda and Mrs Brown’s Boys being passed off as the height of enjoyment - frankly, eating bricks is funnier. But alas all is not lost and the long awaited bigscreen adaption of Partridge is a glorious return to the hay-day of real characters with personality that actually make you laugh out loud in a capacity viewing in your local theatre. They all come out as well, not just that small giggle masquerading as a laugh but the deep down rip-snorters that cause the inevitable spiral into continuous laughter. And this film has plenty of occasions that leave you rubbing your face from the pain of continuously laughing. From the off Steve Coogan’s Norwich-based DJ picks up where he left off, leather driving gloves in hand – for the extra purchase – and a Bluetooth headset to replace his trusty Dictaphone/Car phone combo that once had a place of home in his Rover 800. He finds his current station, North Norfolk Digital, under new management and in the midst of a rebrand to Shape Radio, his job is also suddenly in the firing line, along with fellow veteran DJ Pat Farrell (Colm Meaney). Faced with a dog-eat-dog situation and bumbling his way through a board meeting, Alan does the dirty on Pat and throws him to the wolves with three simple words: ‘JUST SACK PAT’. His decision soon backfires and during the Shape launch party Pat returns, shotgun in hand, to
lay siege to the station and wreak his revenge by taking everybody hostage. Tasked with being the negotiator, Alan is sent in to get the job done and save the day. Although not quite as subtle as the TV series the laughs keep on coming with Coogan in impressive form including one brilliant scene involving an open window while trusty sidekick Simon (Tim Key) delivers the goods throughout. If there is one film you must see this autumn, make it this and you’ll soon agree that Miranda and Mrs Brown Boys is about on par with liver failure.

NEW ‘AGEINTEREST’ SOCIETY FOR UCLAN NEWS 2-5
AGE INTEREST: A social innovation initiative in ageing and education is being carried out by PhD students at the University of Central Lancashire with the launch of a new students’ society for Age Concern: ‘ageINterest Society’. The society is aiming to link higher education with the population ageing phenomenon, in terms of promoting intergenerational solidarity between students of UCLan and older people within the city of Preston. To work towards this goal, the group is undertaking a series of actions, programs and initiatives in cooperation with other organisations and individuals to disseminate knowledge of ageing-related issues. This will facilitate networking among people from a wide range of disciplines, services and interests, including older people themselves to promote age concern across the university and local community. Particular goals of the of ‘ageIN-

terest’ are to increase understanding among the students of UCLan concerning the ‘greying societies’ and the ‘silver economies’ we are moving towards. Raise awareness of the contribution that older Prestonians make to the local society. Encourage local policymakers to take action with the aim of strengthening solidarity between generations and ultimately, create a platform to facilitate sustainable local and multi-disciplinary collaboration among students, scientists, decision makers, and the general public. This will allow the community to better respond to the challenge of the radical demographic change resulting from the expanding human lifespan. Christos Pliakos, chair of the ‘ageINterest’ society, a gerontologist and PhD student at UCLan said: “Demographic ageing is one of the greatest challenges that global soci-

We can exploit the gift of life expectancy instead of considering ageing as a problem.” The students’ society have announced a conference to be held in November, at UCLan, on the theme: ‘Why study ageing. NORTH END MOVE INTO PLAY-OFF SPOT NEWS 2-5
Chris Copestake
PRESTON North End stormed into the play-off positions with a 2-1 win over Oldham on Monday night. The result means the Lilywhites are now sixth in the table ahead of this weekend’s fixture with Stevenage which also heralds the return of former-North End manager Graham Westley. Preston took the lead thanks to a rather fortunate deflected goal from Stuart Beavon after a Joel Byrom freekick. A penalty from Kevin Davies, his first goal since signing for the club, gave the Lilywhites a 2-0 half-time lead despite being outclassed and outmuscled by the visitors for much of the half. Oldham defender James Tarkowski powered home a corner late on for The Latics, making it a nervous final few minutes for the home faithful. Manager Simon Grayson said after the game: “We knew that Oldham have got some quality and were going to be a test for us. "Should we have won the game? Possibly not because they had some good chances and kept possession well. A stern defence was key: "But we had to do whatever was required to win the game. “That meant putting bodies on the

SPOT ON... Kevin Davies grabs his first North End goal line. We have and will play better than that and not win games." This means they are now unbeaten in six matches this season which will bring much delight and enthusiasm to Preston’s supporters, who’ have endured a few quite miserable years watching from the stands. After years of managerial changes and drab mid-table finishes, this could be the year that Preston North End finally return to the Championship.

"However, our aim is to get more members and hopefully grow the sport in the UK. “This year we plan on having enough people for three teams - two male and one female.” Anyone interested in joining the club can visit their stall at the Sports Fair on 20 September at 53 Degrees.

EVERY SUMMER THE FOOTBALL FAN IS OBSESSED BY ONE THING AND ONE THING ONLY - THE TRANSFER WINDOW Mark Davies Sports Writer
IN a summer without a World Cup or European Championship, the transfer window takes up a starring role in the drama. And as those final hours ticked away, Sky Sports News was the only option (pictured right) for the true football fan. That yellow ticker remained, Jim White crept nearer and nearer, Harry Redknapp was no doubt hanging out of a car window and Ryan Babel’s helicopter was always hovering somewhere in the North West as always. But the question is, now that the window has been slammed shut until January, which teams in the Premier League will be happy with their work, and which won’t? Three names in particular, remained in the headlines from May, until the day a certain Welshman failed to do a ‘keepyuppy’ in front of 20,000 at the Bernabeu: Wayne Rooney; Luis Suarez; and the guilty party, Gareth Bale. Three players wanted to go. One went. It was that simple. Suarez felt he had bitten off more than he could chew at Anfield; whereas playing a starring role for England’s champions did not suffice for young Wayne. And with the ‘Special One’ back at the Bridge, Mourinho made it clear he wanted Rooney at Chelsea. But the window shut with England’s number 10 still very much in Manchester.
BALE... The world’s best? The Europa League Winners did, however, manage to strengthen this summer with Willian being stripped of his Tottenham Hotspur kit and bundled into the back of a Russian Yacht, joining for £30 million. André Schürrle looks a player and the mere fact that the irresistible Juan Mata can not get a game speaks volumes of the depth Mourinho has to deal with. A pleasant problem indeed. Arsenal managed to put a frustrating window behind them, as they finally splashed the dollar on Real Madrid’s Mesut Ozil on the final day, smashing club records’n’all - £42 million in fact. There is now a real sense of optimism around the Emirates. Arsneal’s signing of Ozil was down to Real Madrid’s acquisition of Gareth Bale. Tottenham Hotspur dealt with losing their best player well, spending the money before the deal was done with the likes of Érik Lamela, Christian Eriksen, Roberto Soldado and Paulinho among others coming in. Andre Villas-Boas’ side
are without doubt more complete on paper, but only time will tell how quickly a new team will settle. All eyes were on Manchester City with their new manager Manuel Pellegrini. Their limp attempt to retain their crown last season was embarrassing and the City board felt a change had to be made.
ROONEY... Still at United The Chilean arrived at Eastlands with a reputation of being a ‘cool customer’ and has certainly lived up to his billing in this market with a series of quality signings. He swooped early and effectively, with Stevan Jovetic, Fernandinhio, Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo joining an already AList cast. Question marks remain over City’s defence, but there is no team with more options up top than the Citizens. The early pacesetters however, are Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool. He set the pace in the window with some early signings, some of which are already shining: Simon Mignolet is already a cult hero, following his opening day penalty save; Kolo Toure is probably building a statue of himself outside of Anfield as we speak, so much is the love he’s felt from the Kop; whilst sealing the services of Mamadou Sakho is top work for a team who cannot offer European football. The loan signing of Victor Moses could also prove crucial, with the Merseysider’s expected to make a serious push for Champions League qualification. When we add to this the continued services of Luis Suarez, then we have a team of title contenders on our hands. Everton were all set to have a disastrous window until the final hour tolled. At 10pm, they were told that James McCarthy was not for sale and that Romelu Lukaku was on his was to West Brom. Only an hour later and both were sporting blue tops alongside Gareth Barry, who must be considered a great steal for the Toffees. The window slammed shut on Manchester United manager David Moyes with a whimper. He did prize Marouane Fellaini away from Everton, but many feel he hasn’t done enough, especially following the debacle that was the Ander Herrera deal. It’s fair to say, that the teams in and around them have strengthened well and have caught up with United in their maiden season without Sir Alex Ferguson. They weren’t champions for nothing though and with Wayne Rooney still there; write them off at your peril.

SIR Tom Finney Sports Centre instructor, Steve Abbott, has joined the cream of British cycling and become a British Cycling Elite Licence Holder. The 36-year-old said: “I’ve always had modest ambitions of success and I’ve certainly exceeded them. “To get to this level is fantastic and it just shows that hard work brings rewards.” The accolade is recognition of a successful season with Teamwallis Cycling and means he is now ranked in the top one per cent of cyclists in the country - alongside the likes of Mark Cavendish and Peter Kennaugh. Abbott added: “Working shifts helps me to manage a busy schedule. “I can sometimes fit in a four hour ride in the morning before work though it can be tiring if I’ve got to teach a spinning class in the afternoon!” The full-time Duty Officer will continue to juggle his role teaching spinning, boxercise and circuits with the demanding hours required to be an elite athlete.

“He (Steve Guinan) spoke to the Gaffer at Kidderminster who then came to watch me a few times and also for England before offering me a trial for the summer.” Lolley’s hard work paid off a few weeks ago with his first senior goal in a 3-0 win against Chester, a memory which the young man won’t forget in a hurry. “It was an incredible feeling. I haven't scored a goal in front of so many people before and with my Mum and Dad watching, it was a special moment.” It has not always been plain sailing for Joe as a series of injuries affected his game and as a result, at the tender age of sixteen, he fell out of love with the game and subsequently left giants Birmingham City by his own accord. “I played on and off for around 12 months through injuries. I actually went from 5 foot to 5'9 in a year and they kept me on. “When I came back I was in the gym doing fitness and back training but nothing felt the same, they weren’t supportive so I simply just left and never went back.” During the next six to eight months,
Lolley didn’t even kick a ball. He felt he had ‘fallen out of love with football’ and really did not know what to do next. He eventually joined Bromsgrove U18’s and also played for the reserve team aged 17, and his time there is special to him: “I scored 34 goals in 22 games, not that I was counting! “I think it's what I missed, just playing 90 minutes every week enjoying each game and feeling part of a team again. I loved that year and it gave me huge confidence before going into adult football.” The young man believed that he needed to take a step back before moving forward, just to appreciate what he had at Birmingham City. “It allowed me to reflect at where I was before, the great facilities and coaching I'd had for so many years and that gave me the desire and motivation to get back and try to reach that level again which maybe I'd taken for granted having been there since the age of nine.” His time at UCLan will always be special to him. He left Preston with a heavy heart and he feels that none of this would have been possible without the university. “It's been hard to get used to knowing I'm not coming back. Without
UCLan I wouldn't be where I am now, as the football committee put me forward to represent Great Britain at this Summers Universiade which was one of the best experiences of my life and it was the GB trials which then put me in the frame of England Uni's, so UCLan have been a massive part of my progression.” Harriers have got off to a decent start this season and are currently in and around the play-off spots but Lolley is just hoping to keep on doing what he’s doing. “From a team perspective, we're hoping to go one better and get promoted to the Football League. From a personal point of view, I hope to just break into the team, keep improving and hopefully score goals for the team.” As for long term targets beyond this season, Lolley remains grounded. He is glad to be back in the game but his career has already shown that anything is possible: “I'll be honest, I never really set targets. I didn't think I'd ever represent England, Great Britain or get signed by Kidderminster, I'm not the most optimistic person! “In dreamland, I'd love to play for Aston Villa, but that’s unlikely at the moment”.

Professional contract for UCLan striker Mark Davies Sports Writer
THE University of Central Lancashire has a motto: ‘Ex solo ad solem’, or in English, "From the Ground to the Sun”. It simply states that anything is achievable and the sky’s the limit. With the right work ethic, mixed in with talent and luck, students can go as high and as far as they so please. Former student Joe Lolley recently signed a contract with Conference side Kidderminster Harriers after a
successful trial at the club and Lolley was left in no uncertain terms with how he felt about it: “It was amazing really. Playing football for a living was always something I had dreamed of so to have the opportunity to do it is a great feeling.” During his second year in Preston, Lolley was spotted by Steve Guinan, a player/coach at Kidderminster Harriers and was manager of the England universities team when Lolley was picked for them. His performances earned him a trial with Harriers this summer. CONTINUED PAGE 23
