The Imaginators has been running successfully for approximately eight years, and has now expanded to include both a morning and afternoon session. We use objects from Museum and Art Gallery collections, or engage with the exhibitions held in our galleries, as stimulus for hands on and fun activities.

Visits to the Museum Schools
Our on-site team can offer you a wide range of ideas and activities in connection with our galleries and exhibitions to support the school curriculum. We believe that enjoyment, inspiration and creativity are central to this. We offer free staff-led sessions to both primary and secondary schools, special schools, colleges and universities, and can tailor each of these guided sessions to your needs. Sessions can be tied into our regular temporary and touring exhibitions, our permanent displays, or our handling collection objects - or can be a combination of all three. We also offer the opportunity to bring your group and study in your own way in any of our galleries. We call these self-guided sessions and in many cases we can support your visit with teachers’ notes or further information.

Museum in Transit Schools
Museum in Transit (MIT) is our core school education outreach service designed to create a unique, week long event in your school. We will bring displays, museum artefacts, replica items, images and costume to your school. Your pupils will be involved with the organisation and smooth running of the week as they take on responsibility for the display, some of the activities and their own research and learning. The week-long, timetabled event includes whole school assemblies, class sessions and research opportunities.

Skills based objectives are also addressed. The MIT week culminates in a museum-led presentation assembly where the whole school shares the learning discoveries made during the week.
HOW’S MY DRIVING?
For schools interested in MIT for the first time, please contact us to book a 30 minute visit to one of your staff meetings. For schools booking a repeat visit by MIT, please try to book as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

We can also visit your School to enrich individual class or year group topics. If a week-long Museum In Transit (MIT) visit isn’t suitable we can also visit (to enrich individual class or year group topics) for a half day or day. Sessions are based around Museum artefacts and images. We cover a wide range of history, art and science themes. Skills based objectives around themes of enquiry, investigation and research are also addressed.
Providing access to original museum collection artefacts enables children to explore and investigate their topics in a unique way. By holding a Roman period pot, a WWII blackout lantern, a crocodile skull or getting close up to a reproduction from our art collections, your pupils can gain a greater understanding of their topic, develop an enquiring mind and be inspired. Please contact us as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

“SO
EPIC IT WAS AWESOME!”
The Core, our youth forum, develops, encourages and engages young people aged 11-18 years, by developing and promoting events and activities based on exhibitions, collections and Museum programmes.

This is achieved through events such as Music, Murder, Mystery, a collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery. This brought together hard to reach young people through street art, break dancing and rapping and gifted and talented singers using literary quizzes and drama.

Young Explainers Young People
The Young Explainers project (for 18 and 25 year olds), promotes the Museum to young people via a programme of events and activities. These are devised by the Young Explainers and based on exhibitions, collections, and the Museum programme. Students are offered a comprehensive training package which enables them to engage their peers and the rest of the community with the Museum.

Last year’s Young Explainers group gave their time to support the work of the museum by engaging young people and the wider community with the exhibition Sir Joshua Reynolds: The Acquisition of Genius. Their work was equivalent to 1 full time member of staff working for 39.5 weeks (i.e. nearly nine months full time work) in just 5 months!
“Wouldn’t have seen the exhibition if the gig didn’t happen. You should do it more often!!!” Workshop participant
