THREE TOWNS UNITED IN CONFLICT
Until 29 November 2014 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm Saturday www.plymouth.gov.uk/museumgreatwar Admission free ‘Plymouth’s Great War’ tells the story of the amalgamation of the Three Towns of Plymouth, Devonport and East Stonehouse in 1914, reflecting on them as home to the Royal Navy, Army Garrisons, Royal Marines and Royal Naval Air Service. It also looks at the impact of the First World War on local people’s lives – touching on recruitment, conscription, the fighting, the cost, the aftermath and the ‘home front’. It features items, images and documents from the city’s arts, heritage and archive collections. This is not just a standard review of the First World War from start to finish. It’s the story of Plymouth and Plymothians from 1914 to 1918. Related events: pgs 12, 16, 17, 18 and 20

Whitehorse Hill: A Prehistoric Dartmoor Discovery
13 September to 13 December 2014 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm Saturday www.plymouth.gov.uk/museumwhitehorsehill Admission free In 2011 an extraordinary discovery was made on a remote spot of Dartmoor some 600 metres above sea level.
The finds have provided academics and scientists with one of the best glimpses into life in Early Bronze Age Southern England they’ve ever had.
A small prehistoric stone burial chamber, or cist, had become dangerously unstable and was excavated. Many of the items that were recovered from it are unparalleled anywhere else in Europe.
This is your chance to learn more about ancient materials, technology and trade as well as see the remains of the personal and prized possessions of someone who lived nearly 4,000 years ago.
The cist contained the cremated remains of what is believed to be a female aged 15-25 years old. It also included a finely woven bag, over 200 beads that may have formed a striking necklace, a braided woven band decorated with tin studs and two pairs of wooden studs which are the earliest evidence for wood turning in the UK.

‘Whitehorse Hill: A Prehistoric Dartmoor Discovery’ will see these finds go on public display for the very first time. The exhibition also includes expertly made replicas to help demonstrate how they originally looked.

EXHIBITION
Richard Wentworth Thus, 2009 Courtesy of The Artist & Lisson Gallery. © The Artist & Lisson Gallery
20 September to 13 December 2014
This autumn Plymouth will stage the first touring exhibition to examine the many varied ways that artists since the 1960s have undertaken the universal act of taking a walk as a means to create new art.
10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm Saturday www.plymouth.gov.uk/museumwalkon www.walkonplymouth.org
‘Walk On: From Richard Long to Janet Cardiff – 40 Years of Art Walking’ gives an insight into the recent art practice of nearly 40 artists. Several are internationally acclaimed, others are bright new talents. All of them have made new work simply by taking a journey on foot.
Admission free Curated by Cynthia Morrison-Bell and Mike Collier in collaboration with Alistair Robinson and Janet Ross
Featured artists at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery: Francis Alÿs, Atul Bhalla, Janet Cardiff, Sophie Calle, Mike Collier, Chris Drury, Hamish Fulton, Alec Finlay, James Hugonin, Tim Knowles, Richard Long, Julian Opie, Ingrid Pollard, Tim Robinson, Bryndís Snæbjörnsdóttir & Mark Wilson, Richard Wentworth, Carey Young
Some of the featured artists have crossed countries and continents, leaving traces of their movements upon the land or making epic journeys along historic sites. Others have explored the possibilities of walking and how the way we walk shows the world who we are. For some, the walk itself is the artwork. Anything else is simply evidence or 8
Why not visit the exhibition from 10am to 2pm each Saturday from 8 November to 13 December when our trained Gallery Explainers will be available to provide information, answer questions and chat about the works on display?
This is one major exhibition displayed across four city centre sites. Admission to all sites is free. The exhibition is backed with a wide ranging event programme featuring talks, walks, family events and a special Launch Weekend. Full details of all events, plus which artists can be seen at which venue, can be found at walkonplymouth.org
documentation captured in photographs, objects or texts. Regardless of the landscape or location, these ‘explorers’ have made their mark. ‘Walk On’ shows that, from land art to conceptual art and from street photography to film, much of the important art of our time has been created through an act of walking.
This exhibition is being brought to Plymouth thanks to a partnership between Peninsula Arts, Plymouth University; Plymouth Arts Centre; Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art.

In 2013, Multistory and Magnum Photos commissioned nine of the world’s leading photographers to document contemporary British manufacturing. Magnum’s UK photographers: Stuart Franklin, David Hurn, Peter Marlow, Martin Parr, Mark Power and Chris Steele-Perkins; alongside three international photographers: Alessandra Sanguinetti (Argentina), Bruce Gilden (America) and Jonas Bendiksen (Norway) visited over one hundred workplaces across the UK; from one-man businesses to FTSE 100 companies. Their photographs take us from traditional, handmade crafts to modern, intelligent automation; from foundries and assembly lines to research laboratories and high tech cleanrooms, showing an economic sector of extraordinary resilience and diversity.
This nationally important collection encompasses a 2,000 volume book library, several thousand prints, Old Master drawings, oil paintings, bronzes and sculptures. It was compiled by Charles Rogers (17111783) in mid-18th century London before being inherited by the Cotton family in 1783. It passed through three generations of Cottons, each of whom left their mark on it, before it was gifted to the people of Plymouth in 1853. It was initially part of the Proprietary Library. It finally came under the care of the City Museum and Art Gallery in 1915. This exhibition will provide a unique insight into the stories behind the Collection, and bring together some of its most significant and less seen items from over 600 years of art.
The exhibition will feature images of South West-based companies: Bandvulc Tyres, Burts Potato Chips, Conway Stewart, Dartmoor Brewery, Princess Yachts, Spinnaker International, Summerskills Brewery, Tavy Ales, Tideford Organics, Vi-Spring and Westaways Sausages. Thursday 13 November 1.10pm to 2pm + Q&A Well-known British ceramic artist, Paul Scott has recently completed a commission, funded by the Contemporary Art Society, for a consortium of four museums – one of which is Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery. Housed in altered obsolete wooden print trays the work is made up of sliced antique tablewares, tiles, pipes, pots, decals and digital prints. It reanimates historical material to narrate, commemorate and celebrate. Come along to this special talk when Paul will narrate something of the artistic journey he has undertaken. This event is part of CAS Talks supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Free. Donations welcome. Advance booking advised.
