A new musical enters the scene and with it brings new expectations

The musical for Plymouth North has been decided, and the choice is nothing short of exciting: The Spongebob Musical! With actors, tech crew, and teachers buzzing around with their work set up, production is alive and well However, a question surfaces as the days go by: how will they display the characters of Bikini Bottom? The job of bringing sea animals to life on stage sounds like a difficult task, so we’ve ‘dived’ deeper to get the insight from those participating Mr David Grossman, Chorus teacher, will also be the Technical Coordinator for the musical Experiencing every musical performance since 2013, Mr. Grossman has the practice to support the roughly 70 students participating in the play this year Mr Grossman said, “In The Spongebob Musical, the main character is truly Bikini Bottom ”

imagination of Ms Lauren Jezierski, Art teacher, and her students Their help will allow the scenery of Bikini Bottom to thrive in the minds of the audience as much as it will on set. He went further to express how the crew is devoting time to feature how the scene will be designed, since the intricate characteristics of texture and coloring can be obscured easily

Nevertheless, Mr Grossman and the crew members are determined to make the stage just as much of a main character as Spongebob will be “Merging the familiar colors, shapes and textures of the TV show with the tools and materials we have here, mixed with some imagination from the audience as well as the reality that this town is probably made up of discarded items that could be found at the bottom of the ocean,” said Mr. Grossman.

Those viewing the musical will see a mix of new and familiar faces from the theater scene in Plymouth.

Freshman Lyla Jones will be one of the actors that you may have seen before After having an extensive background in not only chorus, but acting as well, she will be embodying the part of ‘Pearl’ this spring “The costumes are mostly nonchalant, but paired with the backgrounds we’re developing, they work off each other well,” said Lyla She discussed that this musical would ‘humanify’ the characters in a casual manner, not overwhelming the audience too much

A peer on set, freshman Trace Flora, considered how the aspects of the costumes were essential to the running of the musical “Not getting too in depth is important, you don t want the costumes to be all that people look at,” said Trace The musical will offer a unique experience that's been built off years of improving actors and experience for the set and costumes. Directors and coordinators alike are preparing themselves for the months ahead, prepping the stage you will eventually see on the opening night, so be sure to admire the hard work and commitment being put in from everyone involved. Mark your calendar, keep an eye out, and stay involved, this is an event you won’t want to miss
