FOREWORD

Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Cooperatives, Housing and Community Safety Social enterprises are a valuable part of Plymouth’s economic and community wellbeing. Over the last 2 years, since the publication of the first ever Plymouth Social Enterprise Directory, the sector has gone from strength to strength. As someone who is personally involved in a number of social enterprises in the city I am honoured to have been asked to write this foreword. With new social enterprises starting every month, and the turnover of the sector rising as well, it is impossible to catch accurate figures – but we do know that with over 150 social enterprises employing over 7,000 people and an annual turnover in excess of half a billion pounds, this is an important growth sector. It is fantastic that in Plymouth there is no shortage of new ideas for social enterprises; local social enterprises are being created; local social enterprises are substantially scaling up the scope of their operations; and local social enterprises are growing and being recognised as major players in the city. None of this happens accidentally and I would like to pay tribute to Plymouth Social Enterprise Network and their partners for their substantial effort in developing individual social enterprises as well as the wider social economy. There are a lot of award winning social enterprises in Plymouth, each should be proud of their achievements. But even better than all of the individual accolades since the publication of the last directory, Plymouth has been named as the first Social Enterprise City. This is well-deserved recognition for everyone involved in social enterprises in the city. Now is not the time to be resting on our laurels. Together we can take the social enterprise sector to even greater heights. Plymouth City Council is committed to supporting and promoting social enterprises. We will continue to do our bit: •P lymouth City Council is working closely with the Plymouth Social Enterprise Network to harness and build on the current successes. • Plymouth City Council has developed policies and activites to support social enterprises, through substantial investment programmes. • Plymouth City Council facilitates social enterprise support and development agencies to inform and shape our work to continue to build on local social enterprise sector’s impact in the city and further afield. • Plymouth City Council will ensure that social enterprises feature in the prestigious Mayflower 2020 celebrations. Now read on – find out about Plymouth’s social enterprises – and start trading with them!

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE WITH PLYMOUTH UNIVERSITY At the heart of higher education is the desire to transform lives through teaching, research and innovation. This makes universities perfectly suited to be agents for change, and catalysts for economic growth and social mobility. It is for those very reasons that there is a groundswell of opinion that higher education can play a key role in supporting and championing the increasingly influential social enterprise sector. Sharing many of the same values as higher education, social enterprise also aims to transform lives, and address social and environmental needs. For Plymouth University, it is absolutely fundamental that we, as an anchor institution for the South West, use our world-class research and our entrepreneurial expertise to boost social enterprise in our communities. Together the higher education sector can deliver outstanding support to social enterprise as a business model to the benefit of our students, our staff and critically our communities, helping to drive sustainable growth by creating jobs, wealth and social cohesion. Our Futures Entrepreneurship Centre connects students, academics, researchers, businesses and entrepreneurs, is a place for experimentation and creativity, champions inclusivity and channels thought-leadership, incubation and transformative education. Social enterprise is a key component of our work. Working locally, nationally and internationally we are opening social enterprise pathways to staff, students and our wider community. ABOUT SOCIAL ENTERPRISE Social enterprises are businesses trading for social and environmental purposes. As with all businesses they aim to deliver excellent products and services that customers will love. The difference is that social purpose is at the very heart of what they do, and the profits they make are reinvested towards achieving that purpose. Buy Social is a national campaign, which encourages individuals and businesses to make the money they spend go further by buying from social enterprises www.buysocialdirectory.org.uk

ABOUT THIS DIRECTORY

Gareth Hart, Chair, Plymouth Social Enterprise Network (PSEN)

The 2012 Directory of Social Enterprise in Plymouth marked a positive step change in the way social enterprise was perceived in the city. A lot has happened since then. Many new social enterprises have started up and in 2013 Plymouth became the UK’s first Social Enterprise City. In order to reflect the burgeoning social enterprise sector in Plymouth we are delighted to present the second, updated directory.

I’d like to thank all the sponsors and funders of this directory, particularly Plymouth City Council and Plymouth University. Thanks also to our designers, Dot Design, and huge appreciation goes to all our members. Without you this directory would not exist: you are Social Enterprise City! PSEN is working hard to see a city where social enterprise is central to the way we do business. To do this we need to raise awareness of the fantastic work that social enterprises in Plymouth already do. Look at shops and businesses across the city and you’ll find social enterprises in action. There are bike shops, bakeries, photographers, cafes and pubs. We have social enterprises delivering health and social care, housing, dentistry, business advice, community energy, sport and leisure, recycling, education, the arts and more. This directory reflects the incredible diversity of the sector. We must not forget why social enterprises exist – to tackle social, environmental and community issues. You can directly support them to achieve this. I urge you to use this directory and buy from our social enterprises. That way we can create a vibrant social economy, make business a force for good and change the world for the better.

Our Chief Executive, Julie Hawker, is a regular contributor to debates and policy developments on a national and regional basis, and also is a lecturer in social enterprise at Plymouth University’s Business School. We always champion social enterprise as a business model and this is why we are supporting Social Enterprise City. Plymouth Energy Community Plymouth Energy Community (PEC) is a successful Community Benefit Society, owned and run by its members. It was set up in June 2013 with support from Plymouth City Council. The 750 member strong society aims to help local people and organisations transform how they buy, use and generate power. Its work focuses on three core goals: • Reducing energy bills and fuel poverty • Improving energy efficiency • Generating a green energy supply in the city. Working in partnership with other energy-related organisations, PEC has helped Plymouth communities take action to change their own energy future by providing a number of services: fuel debt advice, supplier switching scheme, training and volunteer programme, apprenticeships, home energy advice and insulation grant schemes. In 2014, PEC set up another Community Benefit Society, PEC Renewables, to deliver locally-owned renewable energy installations. Plymouth’s first community share offer closed oversubscribed after 7 weeks, with over half of the investors being local. As a result, 21 schools and community buildings

www.plymsocent.org.uk

have solar PV installed for free on their roofs and are benefiting from lost cost energy and a valuable educational resource. This innovative scheme earned the society a number of regional and local awards, as well as the 2014 UK Social Enterprise ‘Investment Deal of the Year’ alongside its ethical investment partner, Ethex. In 2015, PEC hopes its second community share offer will fund more community-owned renewables. Surplus funds generated from its solar PV schemes ensure longevity to provide community benefit for years to come.

Oral Health is a right, not a privilege! We are GDC registered Dental Hygienists with many years’ experience of delivering dental care. Our local ‘not for profit’ Community Interest Community was formed in March 2013 to provide an Oral Health Education and Information service for our community members. We are particularly keen to support Carers working in both professional and family settings. Our main aim is raise awareness and facilitate confidence towards reducing dental disease risk on a ‘self-care’ basis. The two commonest dental diseases are largely preventable - not inevitable. We have a dedicated unique ‘non clinical’ facility and can advise/share top tips towards achieving better oral health (we do not carry out actual dental treatment).

Friends and Families of Special Children The Virginia House Centre, Palace St, Bretonside, Plymouth PL1 2AY W: www.friendsandfamilies.org.uk T: 01752 204369 / 07718 137999 E: info@friendsandfamilies.org.uk

We are a non-profit organisation unique to Plymouth, providing information, support and services for families with disabled children, currently 240 families, many of whom describe us as a life saver. Our services give families opportunities to network and create bespoke training and educational environments. We offer individual family support and give advice on relevant issues. We run social and leisure events allowing ‘’time out to have fun’’ away from the stresses and punishing regime of caring. This allows a vital “recharge of batteries”, relieving isolation and time for young carers to have fun. Integrated activities enable children with disabilities opportunities to experience a huge diversity of sports, arts, crafts and music not elsewhere available to them or their families.
