The Premier League promises something special, with Manchester (red or blue) as favourites
All prices in the mag correct at time of going to press
Is it possible to overdose on sport? The answer, it seems, is no. The proof came this summer when even the most ardent sports fans had their mettle tested by a gruelling schedule. It kicked off with Euro 2012, which didn’t go completely to plan for either the English or Irish teams. Thankfully Spain, Germany and Italy ensured that it was one of the best and most competitive international tournaments of recent times – apart from the final, where Spain found another level to play on (see page 6). Wimbledon followed, Andy Murray nearly becoming the first Brit to win it in 76 years (see page 38). Nearly, that is – but he won everyone over with his tears afterwards. And after all that, of course, there’s the Olympics, said to be the biggest-ever sporting event staged in the UK. In between there was F1, test cricket, the Open Championship, Frankel and Black Caviar racing at
Ascot (see page 8), Haye and Chisora settling their differences once and for all, and Amir Khan getting spectacularly KO’d by Danny Garcia. Every single event offered up massive opportunities on Betfair, which boasts new features to make your betting life even easier (see page 46), which is a good thing because sport isn’t stopping to let anyone catch up. The Premier League in particular promises something special, with Manchester (red or blue) as favourites, but a competitive pack chasing behind. We’ve got the whole season covered in our massive preview, which starts on page 23. Enjoy, and best of luck – whatever you’re betting on.

Fernando Torres came on as a sub in the 74th minute and it took him ten minutes to register his third tournament goal. Four minutes later he set up a goal for Juan Mata, netting him the Golden Boot. Torres tied with Mario Gomez (three goals, one assist) but took the honours thanks to playing less football than the German – only 189 minutes in total.

Iker Casillas lifts the trophy as the Spanish team celebrates its historic victory over Italy in the Euro 2012 final. Spain delivered for Betfair punters at pretournament odds of 3.85. By winning, Spain cemented themselves as one of the greatest teams of all time, winning the last three major international tournaments and becoming the first team to retain the European Championship trophy.
990 Spain have now shut out the opposition in their last ten knockout games in major international tournaments (excluding penalty shootouts). The 990-minute run started at Euro 2008 (when they beat Italy) and includes three games that Spain won on penalties. Forgetting victories on penalties, this was the first time Spain had beaten Italy in a major tournament.

Frankel makes it lucky 11 Queen Anne Stakes, Royal Ascot Tuesday 19 June
Frankel pulls away from the field as he powers towards an 11-length victory in the Queen Anne Stakes. In front of a crowd of over 40,000, the Sir Henry Cecil-trained horse put on a show of racing perfection for his eleventh straight win. Frankel was increasing his lead as he crossed the finishing line, leaving pundits asking if he is the greatest flat racing horse ever.

The percentage of money that traded on Frankel in the Queen Anne Stakes on Betfair Frankel v Black Caviar Frankel and Australian superstar horse Black Caviar dominated the betting in their respective races at Royal Ascot. Frankel was responsible for an astonishing £7.3m of the £7.7m bet on the race, and returned for punters at a Betfair Starting Price of 1.12. It might be incredibly short but, in retrospect, that looks like buying money as the horse with a record 147 Timeform rating cruised home with a stunning winning margin of 11 lengths. Australian racing legend Black Caviar, unbeaten in 21 races, went off four days later in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at a more generous BSP of 1.27. Black Caviar more commonly trades at 1.06 or lower in her native Australia, but in her first race in the UK the odds for punters were a tad more generous. Despite breaking the record for the amount traded on a single horse on Betfair (£12.6m from a total of £13m traded on the race), the mare only narrowly won her 22nd career victory by a head in a thrilling renewal.

Following the race Frankel was awarded a Timeform rating of 147, the highest in Timeform’s history and two pounds higher than the second highest rated horse, Sea-Bird. Frankel has started as odds-on favourite for each of his last ten races, and such is his dominance that in only one of these has he touched odds-against on Betfair's In-Play market.

Cricket talk
England can’t be written off, but Betfair’s Cricket Ambassador is looking elsewhere for value in this year’s T20 Cricket World Cup The T20 World Cup is now seen as one of the flagship events of the international cricketing calendar rather than just a bit of fun. This could end up being a great tournament, with so many teams standing a good chance of going all the way.
the experience of playing year-in-year-out in the Indian Premier League will certainly help their players. They have an embarrassment of riches to pick from and you know that under MS Dhoni, they’ll certainly get the tactics and gameplan right.
Defending champs
Australia and South Africa
The sub-continent teams
Pakistan can never be ruled out because we know how dangerous they can be when they’re all pulling in the same direction, and because of their strong record (runners-up, winners and semi-finalists over the three editions). However, I’m going to give them a miss this time because I’m not sure their batting is consistent enough. Sri Lanka will enjoy playing at home, and having seasoned campaigners like Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Lasith Malinga is invaluable. But in their case it’s the bowling I’m worried about. Beyond Malinga there’s no-one to turn a match on its head and, as of yet, they haven’t come any closer to replacing Muttiah Muralitharan in terms of having a mystery spinner in their ranks. India deserve respect. A knock-out match at a T20 World Cup is a high-pressure situation and
Back India @ 5.9
Back South Africa @ 7.4
There’s plenty to like about this Australian team, with big-hitters and a couple of genuinely quick bowlers who can dismiss any top order cheaply. But they do have an inexperienced skipper at international level in George Bailey and he might be looking towards the World Cup after this one as the time when this team will peak. How many more chances are we going to give South Africa to win a major tournament? Okay, one more. They deserve our faith because they have everything. A scary pace attack in Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn, top-class batsmen in AB de Villiers, Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla, and two of the world’s best all-rounders in this format in Jacques Kallis and Albie Morkel. They’ll be a very tough team to beat.
15
The outsiders
The problem with the West Indies is that the pressure will be permanently on their batsmen to post monster scores because their bowlers can’t be relied on to keep things tight. If Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo find the pitches to their liking they have a chance, but I’d rather single out Gayle as a strong candidate for tournament top run scorer. New Zealand always seem to over-perform in limited-overs tournaments, but I think they’re a little thin on genuine talent, and that means relying on the big guns – Ross Taylor, Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum – to shine in every game. That’s a big ask.
How many more chances are we going to give South Africa to win? Okay, one more

I think England can cope with Kevin Pietersen’s retirement from one day internationals, but the T20 team will really miss his power-hitting in the top three, in addition to his experience and resourcefulness at the crease. A lot could depend on whether Alex Hales can continue to perform to the level we saw in that one-off game against the West Indies, where he was unfortunately dismissed for 99 after playing beautifully. Conditions in Sri Lanka aren’t exactly the sort in which England flourish – we saw how their batsmen got tied up in knots in the recent Test series, even though T20 is of course a very different animal. What we can be sure of is that everyone will know their role in a well-drilled team, so I wouldn’t completely dismiss them.

James Davis Sports Marketing Executive I’ll be backing Europe in the 2012 Ryder Cup outright market. I expect a good start from Europe in the fourball and foursomes as they have performed well here in the recent past – but I’ll be looking to lay that bet and get out before the singles as I think the US will have the edge in that format.
After winning Wimbledon, Roger Federer is still playing classy tennis. However, I think his age will have a part to play in the future and he isn’t as strong away from grass surfaces. I will be looking to lay him in the US Open and perhaps even in the latter matches of the tournament. Top tip: Lay Federer in the US Open
Top tip: Back Europe in the Ryder Cup, but lay off before the singles start

Matthew Hopper Welcome and Winback Manager Back QPR to be relegated from the Premier League at 6.8. Teams finishing 17th have a strong record of going down the following season. Tottenham fans don lederhosen in a bid for Champions League football

F
or Harry Redknapp, it’s fair to say that last season was a game of two halves. When he was acquitted of tax evasion in February, Tottenham were punching above their weight – third in the Premier League, seven points off the top and ten points clear of rivals Arsenal. Redknapp was odds-on to be the next England manager and he seemed set to leave Spurs after steering them from the bottom of the Premier League and into the Champions League. But football’s a funny old game. After a disastrous run-in, Tottenham finished fourth behind Arsenal, and Roy Hodgson got a surprise call-up for England. Still, that was good enough for a Champions League spot – unless Chelsea won the Champions League final by beating the favourites Bayern Munich at the German’s home ground. So, for one night only, Spurs fans were also Bayern Munich fans. And Betfair helped the North London/German faithful by designing special lederhosen for the occasion. The limited edition outfit, including traditional knee-length German breeches and a vintage German hat, was faithful to Spurs’ classic white and navy blue colours. Prior to the game, Betfair’s Alex Bake said: ‘This is probably Tottenham’s biggest game of the season, and they aren’t even playing! Tottenham fans everywhere will become Bayern Munich fans for the 18+

day, and now they’ll be able to get into the German spirit in style. We just hope it’s a terrific final for football.’ It was a great game, but unfortunately Bayern, the 1.46 favourites to lift the trophy on the night, became party poopers when they allowed Drogba to equalise with almost the last touch of the game before losing 4-3 on penalties. Spurs will now contest the Europa League in 2012/13. It was all too much for Tottenham’s chairman Daniel Levy, who sacked Harry Redknapp just in time for us to sign him as our Euro 2012 expert tipster. So, while the season might not have ended the way he would have wanted, at least Redknapp helped line the pockets of punters everywhere at betting.betfair.com.
Unlike other bookies, the Betfair Starting Price is calculated by balancing back and lay bets on the exchange at the start of each race. We don’t add a margin for profit, which is why we think it will give you considerably better odds.
1
To enable the Betfair Starting Price, tick the BSP box directly above the market. To place an SP bet, just click on the respective Back or Lay box. Remember that when you place a Betfair SP bet you are not taking a price, you are asking for a bet at the close of the market. The Betfair Starting Price is calculated when the race begins.
2
You can make sure the Betfair Starting Price is right for you when you place your bet. For back bets, you can set a minimum price for your bet. If the Betfair SP is returned at below that price, your bet is cancelled. For lay bets you can set a maximum price you wish to lay at. If the price drifts and the SP is higher than you’re comfortable laying, your bet is cancelled. Price limits are not the default setting for Betfair SP bets – you need to click on ‘Odds limit’, which you can find on your betslip, before submitting your bet.
l Harry Redknapp wrote regular Euro 2012 columns at betting.betfair.com. Check it out for daily tips from our Ambassadors and tipping experts.
With Redknapp gone, can new boss Andre Villas-Boas lift Spurs into a Champions League spot? They’re currently 2.88 for a top four finish, 4.5 to finish in the top three and 34.0 to lift the Premier League trophy next May.
3
The Betfair Starting Price is calculated in a split second once the race has started. The Back and Lay boxes for the Betfair SP disappear in the market and are replaced by the final Betfair SP figure. Your bet will show up with your potential win and loss highlighted in green and red.

etfair’s VIPs have had some truly memorable trips in 2012. From red carpet days out in Monaco to private dinners with some of football’s all-time greats, you name it, Betfair’s VIPs have done it. But this summer, the world’s largest online betting exchange proved it still has a trick or two up its sleeve. Forget Wimbledon, and forget the Olympics, the Euro 2012 championships in Poland and Ukraine was the hottest ticket in sport this summer. And for those lucky enough to join Betfair on an amazing all-expenses paid trip to the final in Kiev this July, watching Spain defeat Italy 4-0 and put forward their case as 18+

Lucky three As the hype and excitement spread to every corner of Europe in the run up to Euro 2012, thousands of Betfair punters were busy battling away in a special promotion to win front row seats to the final at Kiev’s impressive Olympic Stadium on 1 July. Competition for the tickets was fierce, with points scored for successful bets. But once the final bets had been placed, three Betfair VIPs had won and were ready to be impressed. They weren’t disappointed. Kicking off at London’s Heathrow Airport, the four-day Euro blowout was a five-star luxury experience from start to finish. From a private escort by Betfair
representatives at the airport, to top-class pre-match meals in some of Kiev’s most exclusive restaurants, no expense was spared. And in typical VIP fashion, a great hotel was an essential part of the trip. The plush Royal Olympic, in the heart of Kiev, fit the bill perfectly. The stunning hotel is a stone’s throw from the iconic Olympic Stadium, and with cultural landmarks, such as Independence Square, and dozens of beautiful attractions on its doorstep, Betfair’s VIPs weren’t short of entertainment away from their rooms.
Tiki-taka-tastic! But football was always going to be the defining element of this once-in-a-lifetime trip. And, after a day spent familiarising themselves with Kiev, seeing the sights and drinking in the atmosphere among rowdy Italian and Spanish fans, the VIPs were chomping at the bit when the final rolled round. Spain were just too good for Italy, in an epic final
Thanks to front row seats with incredible views of the action, Betfair’s VIPs witnessed Spain make history in Kiev
Prior to the kick-off few people were predicting the game that eventually ensued at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev. With many pundits suggesting a tight match was on the cards, with Under 2.5 Goals trading at just 1.49 pre-game, the 4-0 scoreline was both a shock and a welcome surprise to some punters. Spain, accused by many of playing boring football in the run-up to the final, turned on the style and the floodgates opened with four different players scoring. One of the outside bets for top goalscorer, Fernando Torres, could even have taken the title outright had he not selflessly passed to Juan Mata for the final goal. It was a masterclass of football by one of the greatest international sides ever. The 2.24 on offer before the game now, in retrospect, looks like an opportunity to buy money. And if you were one of the lucky ones who got on the 4-0 correct score market, then we expect you are still celebrating.

This meant there was time to soak up the last drops of atmosphere from Euro 2012, before making their way home to tell their family and friends what they’d witnessed. But if you’re reading this all, thinking: ‘I’ll never win a package that good’, then stop right there. Yet while 60,000 fans spilled out of the stadium to make their way back home on a wave of celebration or despair, the trip wasn’t over for Betfair and its select group of VIPs. As the world digested what Xavi, Iniesta and the rest of Spain’s incredible side had achieved, for the VIPs there was still plenty more excitement to

Thanks to front row seats with incredible views of the action, Betfair’s VIPs witnessed first-hand as Vicente del Bosque’s Golden Generation swept aside Italy on their way to an historic 4-0 win and their second Euro title in four years. Beware a Ferguson scorned. That’s the message from Old Trafford this season. Manchester City’s dramatic title win last season was achieved with two late goals – it was like poking a hornets’ nest with a three-iron and tees up a tremendous intra-city battle in 2012/13. United don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Last season, they accumulated 89 points, the same as City, and the highest tally from a team who didn't win the title. United did that without hitting top gear, albeit with a miserly defence. They kept 20 clean sheets while David de Gea boasted the best saves-to-shots ratio. What United need is for new midfielder Shinji Kagawa to fire at the other end. United couldn’t compete with City’s David Silva though, who created 104 goalscoring chances last season. Kagawa missed half of the 2011/12 Bundesliga campaign and still scored 17, with 13 assists, as Dortmund lifted the title. We fancy him to score ten or more. City’s rear-guard is marshalled by the unflappable triumvirate of Joe Hart, Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott. The Citizens aren’t bad at the other end, either, converting almost a fifth of their chances last season. Can they go the season unbeaten? United will have a lot to say about that, but it’s worth a punt. Crucially, they can strengthen further.
Premier league
Trends value 1 Hard to find title-race The Premier League is rightly regarded as one of European football’s closed shops, with three sides – Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea – claiming 16 of the last 17 titles between them. With the outcome fairly predictable, it’s been difficult to find appealing prices in the outright market in recent years. That’s laid bare by the fact the pre-season favourite has landed the title in eight of the last 15 seasons and always finished in the top three. Over the last decade, the biggest-priced title winners were Manchester United at 7.5 in 2006/07 (the market made Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea virtually unbeatable at 1.44), but that was very much the exception to the rule. With hindsight Manchester City’s 5.5 antepost price to
win the title last season shows occasionally there’s some value out there, but the Citizens are unlikely to be such a big price for a long time to come. This season Manchester United represent the value at a decent 3.5.
The top guns Arsenal looked genuine title challengers at some stages, but drew games they should have won. Careless defending proved costly, and no other team made as many last-ditch challenges. Arsene Wenger is yet to plug those gaps, but his attack might not be so onedimensional as Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud have joined to provide new firepower up front. Chelsea moved quickly to add Eden Hazard, with 20 goals and 16 assists in 2011/12 for Ligue 1 side Lille, to their armoury. Chelsea can beat anyone on their day, but their league form under ‘Robbie’ di Matteo was inconsistent. The Italian’s biggest challenge will be to get the best from Torres, who showed signs of returning to his best towards the end of last season. Coming off the back of a strong Euro 2012, Torres might just top the goalscoring charts. Spurs meanwhile are an unknown quantity. Harry Redknapp has been controversially replaced by Andre Villas-Boas, who will be under 18+

? 2 wigan: cannon fodder It’s testament to Wigan’s staying power that they’re about to embark on their eighth consecutive season in the Premier League. Their top-flight run is all the more remarkable considering the Big Four steamroller them year after year. Against Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool (until the end of 2009/10) and Manchester City (since the start of 2010/11), the Latics have a crushing 80 per cent loss rate. No other team better embodies the theory that lower-ranking sides write off fixtures against the division’s elite in order to focus on more winnable games.
3 don't write off promoted sides The market is generally pessimistic about promoted sides’ chances of staying up. Twelve months ago, new boys Swansea, Norwich and QPR headed the relegation market, with the Canaries and Swans odds-on to go down. All three survived, with Norwich and Swansea finishing comfortably in mid-table and QPR staying up on the final day. The long-term stats show this is more common than you might think: over the past decade, only 13 of 30 promoted sides have gone straight back down, and the last time all three went down at the same time was 1997/98. Consider laying Reading, Southampton and West Ham in the relegation market.
4 cold nights in stoke ‘Ah, but could he do it on a cold night in Stoke?’ is one of those lines pundits spew to disparage foreign leagues. We’d never condone that – but there is some truth in the cliché that the Britannia Stadium is a tricky place to go to. Since being promoted to the top flight in 2008 the Potters’ home record is an impressive won 34, drawn 23 and lost 19 (a 25 per cent loss rate). And they’ve drawn eight of 16 games against the Big Four, including all four last season (0-0 v Chelsea, 1-1 v Man Utd, 1-1 v Man City and 1-1 v Arsenal). It seems Tony Pulis’ industrial style of football really is difficult to play against.

5 make united pay Sir Alex Ferguson’s side will still be smarting from relinquishing their crown to local rivals City last May, but the Red Devils’ home form remains one of the Premier League’s miracles. Over the past five seasons United have won a remarkable 82 out of 95 home league games (an 86 per cent win rate). Of course, you need more than an outstanding win rate to make money: what also matters is the price. United’s odds will be as short as 1.1 against some of the division’s weaker sides, so turning a profit by backing them blindly at Old Trafford is virtually impossible. Instead the smart approach is to purely back United at home against better teams. Over the past five seasons they’ve won an impressive 19 out of 25 times (a 76 per cent win rate) at home to sides that have eventually finished in the top six, with the crucial
EXPERTEYE Martin Lipton
point being the price on United will be bigger in such matches. Finally, if there’s a time to oppose United, it’s straight after Champions League fixtures. Their home win rate drops to 71 per cent as opposed to 86 per cent overall, and their away win rate falls to 43 per cent compared to 54 per cent in away games as a whole. Ominously, United have to travel to Liverpool, Newcastle, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Manchester City after Champions League games in the opening half of the season.
Chief football writer at the Daily Mirror
There’s only one title winner for me – Manches ter City. They beat their bi ggest enemy last season beca use now there are no psychologi cal scars or mental hurdles. I think they can win by a far more handsome margin, even as m uch as eight to ten points.

Smarter betting 1
Under/Over 2.5 Goals
One of the most popular football markets is Under/Over 2.5 Goals. Here you’re betting on the game having either two or less goals, or three or more goals. The term Under/Over 2.5 goals is the simplest way of expressing that. It’s that straightforward. If you think there will be two goals or less in a game, you bet on under 2.5 goals. If you think there’ll be three goals or more, you bet on over 2.5 goals. Some sides play freeflowing football and score (and concede) lots. Remember Blackpool? Others play a tighter defence-first approach. As a guide, the average number of goals per game in the Premier League last season was 2.81.
26
2
Betting the Asian Handicap
In games where the outcome looks like a foregone conclusion, the Asian Handicap market comes in handy. This is basically a way of increasing interest when one team is likely to win comfortably. Take Manchester City v West Brom as an example. City will be around 1.2 to win, which is hardly tempting. On the Asian Handicap, City may be quoted around evens to win with a -2 goal start. The handicap – minus 2 – is effectively added to the starting scoreline of 0-0. So with this bet, City start the game with a two-goal deficit. You back City -2 on the Asian Handicap. If City win by three goals or more, you have a winning bet. If City lose, draw or win by only one goal, your bet loses. If City win by exactly two goals, you get your stakes back, as the handicap has been equalled.
EXPERTEYE Matt Le Tissier Sky Sports pundit It’s going to be tight. Chelsea are already a far more attractive proposition because of their Champions League success, and the signing of Eden Hazard. Man City are going to be up there again, though, particularly after what they achieved last season. They were the best team in the country. 18+

pressure to prove that Abramovich made a huge mistake in sacking him last season.
Northern Lights Geordie expectations will have been enhanced by last year’s fifth-place and boss Alan Pardew will want to repeat. His eye for a player – with the help of super-scout Graham Carr – is without question. Demba Ba, 16 goals last season, and Papiss Cisse, 13 goals, are a potent attack, although Ba is yet to score with Cisse in the team. New Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has two tasks: win more home games and stop his players hitting the bar. The Reds won just six games at Anfield despite a strong defence, their propensity for hitting the woodwork their Achilles heel. Elsewhere, Southampton,
3
Laying and trading
Backing is the form of betting everybody understands. A bet on Chelsea to win the Premier League is you backing them. Laying Chelsea to win is the opposite – you’re saying they won't win the title. On Betfair, you can lay teams, or players in goalscorer markets, or the number of goals in a game, and so on. The beauty of being able to back and lay is you can trade. In simple terms, trading means you placing two opposing bets on the same market if and when prices change favourably in order to guarantee a profit. For example, you can back Liverpool at 42.0 to win the Premier League pre-season. If they get off to a flying start and their odds shorten you can lay them to make a profit regardless of whether they end up winning the league or not. See page 51 for more on trading.
Reading and West Ham United will be looking to repeat the class of 2011 and avoid the drop. Hammers’ striker Ricardo Vaz Te scored ten goals in his last 11 appearances in 2011/12 and could be a fantasy-football favourite. Swansea, Norwich and Queens Park Rangers will all want to avoid ‘second-season syndrome’. QPR’s finances find them best placed to do so while the others will be without the managers that got them into the top flight. One interesting bet is whether Norwich can finish above Aston Villa, managed by their former boss Paul Lambert. The Canaries and the Villians, along with Swansea, could all get dragged into a battle with Southampton, Wigan Athletic (who are unlikely to muster a third consecutive ‘Houdini’ act) and West Brom for the drop.

The bad blood might be gone but the competition at the Ryder Cup is as fierce as ever. We catch up with the captain of Team Europe as he bids to retain the trophy on US soil
T
Who was the first person you called when you were appointed captain?
30
Seve [Ballesteros]. We chatted about the great times we had together and laughed about his hyperactive leadership at Valderrama in 1997.
You and Seve forged a legendary partnership (15 matches, 11 wins, two halves, two defeats) but what was it like making your debut as his partner at Muirfield Village in 1987? I knew, standing on that first tee, that we were going to win: the way he talked, the way he looked at you, the way he looked at the opponents, the way he looked at the crowd. I was really nervous. He said: ‘Try to play your game, enjoy the moment, and I will take care of the rest.’
You’ll miss his influence in Chicago this September. I miss his desire, his passion, his will, his determination, all those elements that made him so special. He never gave up and he always believed we could turn things around, whatever the situation. The last time [at Celtic Manor], he spoke on the phone the night before the match and it lifted the whole team. I’ve never experienced so much energy around another player. I’ve seen great players – Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and Tiger Woods – but Seve was extra special. There was an aura around him. I’m sure his spirit will be with us in the team room at Medinah.

What will be your style of captaincy?

The more picks you have, the less value you give to the qualifying system. We have 20 players that are great
“
when you were vice-captain, has become legendary. What did you say to the team? What I said wasn’t that important – it was the way I said it, because it came from my heart. That’s the way I am. I will tell the players in Chicago what the Ryder Cup means to me and talk from my heart. Hopefully that will be enough to make them play a little harder. But what I have learned is that everything is either right or wrong. There is nothing in between. That is the way it is. You have to live with that.
Nick Faldo had only you as his vice-captain at Valhalla. You will have four. Why? I know you need fours guys to help you – to have one man with each group. That was the lesson from Kentucky [in 2008]. Seve was everywhere at all times at Valderrama [in 1997]. I’m not going to be able to do that.
Colin Montgomerie had three wild card picks at Celtic Manor. You will have two. Why? The more picks you have, the less value you give to the qualifying system. We have about 20 players that are great and can make the team. It’s different to, say, 15 years ago. We knew that we had six to eight good players, and three or four that would be a little weak. The standard has improved so much.
Well, I would rather keep that for the team. I’m not the kind of person who likes to talk a lot. Statistics are important. When I was at Celtic Manor, Paul McGinley did a wonderful job. He had all of the little details. It’s nice to have that kind of information, but it also comes down to how the player is feeling. So you have to combine those things. I’m going to try to be as close to the players as possible. I am keeping a close eye on them, seeing who is swinging the club well. What really counts, though, is being sharp for the week in Medinah.
Have you and US captain Davis Love III talked about ensuring there is no bad blood? It’s true we’ve had certain situations in the past that were not ideal, but it has improved a lot since then. The relationship between the players is one of respect. A lot of Europeans play in the States now and we know each other better. We have left behind those years when the atmosphere was not good. I know Chicago will be loud. They love their sport. But they will be fair. I’m not going to judge them based on two or three idiots that might say the wrong thing at the wrong time.
But it won’t be too friendly, will it? I am looking forward to seeing the action, to hearing the crowd, and to feeling all the emotions. Davis and I go back a long way. We’ve faced each other a lot. But don’t be mistaken – even though we have a lot of respect for each other, we are still competitive and are going to try to beat each other like hell, that’s for sure. l The 2012 Ryder Cup takes place 27-30 September at Medinah Country Club, Illinois. he 39th Ryder Cup takes place in Illinois for the first time in September. Europe has dominated in recent years, winning four from five, but the US team is strong and goes in as a marginal favourite.

Europe has the edge over the last 20 years, winning six of the last ten, and four of the last five, including the most recent at Celtic Manor Resort in 2010.

The winning margin in 2010 was a single point, with scores of 14.5-13.5. As the US team were defending champions a 14-14 tie would have seen them retain.

Tiger Woods picked up his third win of the season at the AT&T National in July. This propelled him from seventh to third in the US Ryder Cup standings. The top eight qualify automatically, with four captain’s picks.

Barcelona v Chelsea Champions League 24 April 2012 Market: Barcelona to win A moment of madness from the normally dependable John Terry left Chelsea with a mountain to climb in the Champions League semi-final. Chelsea took a 1-0 lead to the Nou Camp, but Barcelona were already back on terms when Terry kneed Alexis Sanchez in the back to receive his marching orders. Down to ten men, Chelsea conceded again shortly after when Iniesta made the most of a sublime pass from Messi. At the start of the second half Ramires scored a crucial away goal in one of Chelsea’s only attacks of the game. The visitors parked the bus and somehow held out until injury time. Then, with Barcelona pushing everyone forward in search of the goal that would put them through, Torres found himself unmarked and with an age to take the ball round Valdes before slotting home.

1.01 LA Clippers v Memphis Grizzlies NBA Playoffs 29 April 2012 Market: Memphis Grizzlies to win
The Grizzlies missed 12 straight shots
Momentum is everything in basketball, but when the Grizzlies found themselves 21 points up at the end of the third quarter you could have forgiven them for taking their foot off the pedal. Twenty-one points was the highest third-quarter deficit ever overhauled in the NBA play-offs and that obviously gave the Clippers hope. The Grizzlies missed an incredible 12 straight shots and the Clippers finished with a 28-3 run to take the game right down to the wire. Even after all that, the Grizzlies still had a chance to save the game with a shot in the dying seconds that Rudy Gay couldn’t convert.

Lukas Rosol v Rafael Nadal Wimbledon 25 June 2012 Market: Nadal to win Nadal hadn’t lost before the third round of a Grand Slam since his defeat to Gilles Mueller in the second round of Wimbledon in 2005. It made his loss to 100th seed Rosol this year all the more captivating. Rosol took a two sets to one lead, but when Nadal won the fourth the market decided any chance of a shock had passed. Play was halted
while the roof was closed and, as they resumed, Nadal wilted under a barrage of brutal groundstrokes. Nadal said afterwards he was ‘disappointed’, but that losing wasn’t a tragedy. Try telling that to the 1.01 backers who were left weeping into their strawberries.

LAY THE FAVOURITE
How do you get into Room 1.01? And what should you do when you’re there? Sport may be unpredictable but sometimes it can be so one-sided that the result never looks in doubt. When an In-Play event is considered an almost dead-cert it gains the coveted 1.01 price on Betfair. This attracts two types of punter. The first are those who want a quick buck with little risk. Back £/€100 on a 1.01 runner and you earn an ‘easy’ £/€1 profit if it comes in. The other side of this bet is to lay the heavy favourite for a small amount and pray that the sporting gods smile on you. Lay a 1.01 shot with just £/€100 liability and you would stand to collect a whopping £/€10,000 if the unexpected happens. As you’ll know by now, huge sporting upsets occur with frightening regularity – choose your 1.01 shot correctly and you’ll be laughing all the way to the bank. 18+

Delhi Daredevils v Rajasthan Royals Indian Premier League 29 April 2012 Market: Royals to win
two-minutes masterclas
The Delhi Daredevils consolidated their top-of-the-league spot with a thrilling win over Rajasthan Royals by a single run. The Daredevils posted a total of 152 after a rare lapse by Kevin Pietersen saw him score just five from five balls. A pretty regular chase saw the Royals needing just 15 runs from the last two overs, but Morkel took a wicket for three runs in the penultimate to leave 12 from the last. Yadev started with a full toss which Rahane missed, before he broke his bat (and got a single) trying to hit the next out of the ground. A single and a six seemed to have brought the match back for the Royals, and two more on the penultimate ball left two for victory, one for a draw. Rahane was run out making a desperate bid for the single and the Daredevils stayed top of the league.

Lock in profit either risk-free or by Green Booking and you simply can’t lose

Let’s say you backed Derbyshire to beat Leicestershire (see below) at a price of 1.5. With a stake of £/€100 you’d be looking to make a tasty £/€50 profit. With two overs left and the visitors needing 35 runs to win, you could lay your bet off for very little outlay. If you laid £/€100 at 1.01 you’d only lose £/€1 of your winnings, for a risk-free bet. If you didn’t, you’d have felt a sinking feeling as the runs poured in. On Betfair you can also create what’s known as a Green Book – where you’ll win whatever the outcome. For example, if you laid £/€150 in the match above at 1.01 and went on to lose the original bet, you’d still clear £/€50 profit. If your original selection held you’d only lose £/€1.50 of your original £/€50 profit. This win/win situation, which you can achieve on Betfair, is what separates us from a standard bookie.
Derbyshire v Leicestershire FLt20 North Division 29 June 2012 Market: Derbyshire to win Derbyshire enjoyed a good knock, setting up a target of 171 for their neighbours to chase. The opening Leicestershire partnership of Razzaq and Cobb posted an impressive 66 runs before the first wicket in less than six overs. Some fine bowling from Hughes and Naved-ul-Hasan, though, left Leicestershire looking for 54 from the last five overs, and when Naved and Park bowled overs 17 and 18 for eight runs and two wickets the game looked over. However, needing 35 off the final two overs, the visitors hit a massive 23 from over 19, and converted the final 12 to seal an improbable comeback.

Serena Williams v Virginie Razzano French Open 29 May 2012 Market: Williams to win Williams wobbled in the first round of the French Open when she lost her first two service games, but she steadied the ship and claimed the first set 6-4. The markets reacted by tumbling, and when Williams raced to a 4-0 lead in the second set tiebreak, victory seemed inevitable. But Razzano dug in and somehow dragged herself back into the game, winning six of the next seven points to earn herself a set point at 5-6. She converted and Williams shed a tear on her chair, losing the next five games and looking decidedly out-of-sorts. She won three games back before the drama really started. Razzano was docked a point for crying out in the next game, giving Williams a break point. She didn’t take it, and a visibly struggling Razzano eventually finished her off with her eighth match point three hours in.

Rodionova won the first set 7-5 before racing to a seemingly unassailable 5-2 lead in the second. Then, mysteriously, Rodionova started to crumble. At 15-0 she made three unforced errors before missing a simple pass to lose the game. Johansson grew in stature, winning the next three before Rodionova held serve to take the game to a tiebreak. It got worse for the 1.01 backers. Johannson won the tiebreak 8-6 and broke Rodionova in the third game of the decider. Rodionova took out her frustration on the referee, but to no avail – the rest of the games went to serve and Johannson won.

Rafael Nadal v Fernando Verdasco Madrid Masters 10 May 2012 Market: Nadal to win The portents weren’t great for Verdasco when he lined up against Nadal in the third round of the Madrid Masters. Despite pushing Nadal close on a couple of occasions Verdasco was 0-14 against his fellow Spaniard. The fact that this match was due to be played on clay made Nadal even more of a banker – but this was no ordinary clay. Controversially, this was the first year that the Madrid Masters played on a new blue surface. The world’s top
two players hated it and Nadal blamed it for his subsequent shock defeat to Verdasco, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Afterwards Nadal said: ‘I wasn’t good enough to adapt my game to this court... I am sad but if things continue like this next year there will be one less tournament in my calendar.’ Djokovic has also refused to play if the blue clay remains in 2013.

Nineteen behind in the third, Olympiakos were down and out against a rampant CSKA in this deciding game in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, before a 14-point run got them back into it. With a 60-55 lead and just over 90 seconds left on the clock, CSKA missed a raft of three pointers allowing Olympiakos to close to within two. With 20 seconds left though it looked like they were going to hang on when they were awarded two free throws. Only one went in and Olympiakos scored to close to one. CSKA then had another two throws to seal the win but, with just ten seconds on the clock, they missed, the ball bounced off the rim and Olympiakos pounced, setting up a scoring shot which was converted with just 0.7 seconds left to play.

2012 Wimbledon final Andy Murray’s bid to become the first Brit to win Wimbledon since 1936 made for a thrilling match and Betfair's biggest betting market ever
andy murray Age: 25 Nationality: British Career prize money: $20,926,752 Grand slam titles: 0
ith the weight of 76 years of expectation on his back, it was a remarkably calm Andy Murray who stepped out in front of a packed Wimbledon Centre Court for his final against Roger Federer. It was the Scot’s first Wimbledon final, and the first from a British player since 1938, so the media interest was intense. Tickets were reportedly changing hands for up to £25,000 beforehand, but the stoic Murray showed no signs of letting the pressure get to him as he began the match. The Betfair markets rated Murray as a 2.78 shot to stop Federer winning an extraordinary seventh Wimbledon title, but it was the Scot who took an early lead as he cruised to a comfortable-looking first set win. Murray was playing with pace and aggression, and testing the old master’s backhand to the limits with some booming ground strokes. And when Murray surged to a 2-0 lead in the second set, many thought this could finally be it. The Betfair markets flipped on their heads with Federer pushed out to 2.2 and Murray at 1.85 as even the cynical betting public started to believe Murray could do it.

Epic encounter But only a fool writes off Federer. And after an intense second set with some epic baseline rallies, the Swiss player finally made his move. Murray had missed two chances to break Federer’s serve in the set, but the Swiss made no mistake when he manufactured a break point from nowhere at 6-5 with a series of breathtaking shots to take the set. Murray looked devastated at having the set snatched away from him, and when the obligatory rain arrived during the third set it proved his death blow. Federer is regarded as the world’s best indoor player and, with the roof closed as the rain hammered down outside, he put on a masterclass of precision tennis. While Federer’s serve became a weapon, Murray was made to toil on his service games. And increasingly the game looked to be out of the Scot’s reach. He lost the final two sets 6-3, 6-4, and when Murray’s final shot hit the net Federer dropped to the floor, his place in history assured. Murray – and the British public – will have to wait a little longer.

Bluffer’s guide to laying You don’t need to back the winner to make money on Betfair – laying a market is sometimes the smartest way to bet What’s all this about laying bets then? That’s a new one on me.
So can I lay selections on Betfair? It’s one of the unique features of Betfair. If you’re fairly certain a horse is out of form, or outclassed in a race, you can simply lay that horse. In other words, you bet on it not winning. You can do this on every race, every day. Laying is the smart way to bet if you’re of the opinion that a horse is going to struggle to win, or is too short a price to consider backing.
Do I have to risk more than I can win? Not at all. In fact one of the best ways to lay bets is when there is a market with a really short-priced favourite. Sometimes the odds on a favourite become so short there is little value to be had in backing it. Take Astrology in the 2012 King Edward VII Stakes for example, who went off at a Betfair Starting Price of 1.82 and finished fourth. You only had to risk £/€82 to win £/€100 in a ten horse race, effectively backing the field against Astrology. 18+
www.gambleaware.co.uk
What are the other advantages of laying? It gives you a chance to make a smart bet when you think one outcome is unlikely, but are not certain how it will end up. Take a football match. If you think Norwich will struggle to beat Arsenal, but you think they might sneak a draw then you can lay Norwich to win. So long as they don’t, you do.
So laying is actually really simple? Exactly. It’s not complicated at all. It’s just the smart way to bet when you don’t know what will win, but you
Pick your moment to lay and lock in a profit
think you know what will lose. It’s also a really good way to hedge your bets when the match has started.
What do you mean, ‘hedging my bets’? ‘Hedging’ just means taking both sides of the bet. Let’s say, instead of laying Norwich to win in a match against Arsenal, you bet £/€100 on Arsenal at 1.65 to win and Arsenal have just gone 1-0 up. The odds have fallen to 1.25 on Arsenal, but you are worried about the draw and want to eliminate

No it’s not. In fact, you’ve probably done it already – every time you say to a mate, ‘I bet you can’t do that’, you’re laying a bet. Laying is simply betting against something happening by letting someone else bet against you. If you give your mate 2/1 odds they can’t do a standing backflip, you’ve just laid a bet. If he bets £/€10 and wins you pay him £/€20. If he loses you get £/€10.
your risk. To do this you could subsequently lay £/€100 at 1.25. That way if Arsenal win, you profit £/€40. If Arsenal lose or draw you haven’t lost your stake because you took the risk out with the lay bet. You could also choose to lay an amount that would give you a profit whatever the outcome of the game. If you decided to lay £/€130 on Arsenal at 1.25 you would win £/€32.50 if Arsenal went on to win and £/€30 if it was a draw or Norwich somehow completed the unlikely reverse. This ability to trade is what makes betting with Betfair so unique.
Field of dreams Lay a favourite horse and you’re effectively on ‘the field’ – we show you how it’s done.
1
Sprinter Sacre is the clear favourite to win the 2013 Champion Chase, but you don’t think he’s going to win. You don’t know which horse will win, but you’re pretty sure Sprinter Sacre won’t. Lay odds are in pink.
So should I just go out and lay all the 100/1 shots then as they’re never going to win? Unless you’re sure of what you’re doing you should steer clear of these types of bets, as you’re risking a lot to win a little. Would you want to risk £/€20,000 just to win £/€200? Remember the trick with laying is to think of the bet in reverse. What are you willing (or can afford) to risk? If you’re comfortable betting £/€100 that Andy Murray won’t win the US Open, you can click on his lay odds and then ‘Your liability’ above the market. By entering £/€100, Betfair will work out your lay stake, which you’ll collect if Murray fails to win.
2
You lay Sprinter Sacre for £/€100 at odds of 2.24. Your liability of £/€124 is taken out of your account. If Sprinter Sacre doesn’t win, you win the backer’s £/€100 stake and your £/€124 liability is returned. If he wins, you lose your £/€124.
What about laying a market with really short odds?
Thomas Chippendale won the King Edward VII Stakes, ahead of firm favourite Astrology
The shorter the odds of a selection, the more money you can win for less risk. Say a selection is trading at 1.01. If you lay a bet of £/€100, you’re only risking £/€1 if the selection wins. With odds like that you might not see many bets coming in, but plenty of 1.01 selections are derailed. See the latest upsets in our Room 1.01 feature on page 32.
Top Tips
Smarter Betting Betting against a selection is quite often the smartest way to go… Tiger Woods has had a torrid time since scandal engulfed him in November 2009. He has shown signs of getting his game back on track recently and won the Memorial at the beginning of June this year. This led to him going off in the US Open at a ridiculously short 9.8. He should have been at least double that price and smart layers cleaned up.
Prior to Euro 2012 England were written off as serious contenders to the crown. They still offered excellent laying opportunities though, especially in games against stiff opposition such as France and Italy. Their outright price of 12.5 was more realistic than in previous tournaments, but was still a license to print money.
Hurricane Fly was a strong favourite in this year’s Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham, and went off odds-on only to finish well beaten in third. He was recommended as a lay by one canny Betfair blog tipster, who also called the correct winner, Rock on Ruby. Keep an eye on the very latest tips at betting.betfair.com for other smart lays like this.
n Lay a selection if you think it is likely to lose, but you’re less certain who will win. n Always check your liability if you were to lose the bet, although remember that Betfair won’t let you risk more money than you have in your account. n Be mindful of where you put the decimal point. If you want to lay a bet at 2.3 make sure it is just that, and not 23. Otherwise it could be a very expensive mistake should your selection go on to win. 18+

cricket
Focus on... Ex pro-cricket player turned keen punter Iain Fletcher explains the basics of cricket betting and looks forward to the T20 World Cup here’s never been a better time to be a cricket fan – but where to start if you’re looking to make a tidy profit? The differing formats of the game demand different betting strategies and, as playing conditions can vary greatly, location is crucial.
Betting on Test Matches
44
There are two golden rules to follow. First, you need to analyse the results of the previous three-to-five years in the host country, and work out the number of results and draws. Next, you should analyse the results for each of the Test Match grounds, and use these stats to calculate percentages of victories by team batting first and batting second. For example, England have played 11 Test Matches at Lord’s in the past five years; they have won six and drawn five. Interestingly, batting first provided all but one winner. On nine occasions the team that won the toss elected to field as the pitch looked green or there was some cloud cover. These teams lost four, drew four and only won one – knowing that gives value. During the match there will be specific events you can target. England are very good bowling with the new ball and taking early wickets. However, there is a spell after the early shine and then the reverse-swing where the ball becomes soft and batting easier (around overs 55 to 80). During that time England will try to contain more and be less aggressive (unless they have the opposition in real trouble) and batsmen can accumulate runs steadily. Being aware of that allows you to either close positions, or be contrary and back the batting side for a short-term profit. Weather is a vital part of cricket but, unless the rain is long and torrential, it can have less effect than most punters think. The ICC regulations allow for time lost to be made up on subsequent days by early starts or late finishes – this 18+

means that, despite a heavy shower, little or no time may actually be lost. That does not stop the draw coming in aggressively whenever the players leave the field. Laying the draw can offer a simple profit when the prices adjust on restart.
Betting on one-day cricket One-day cricket is perfect for traders as every ball offers myriad options for prices

to swing wildly. Again, start with the baseline of statistics and be sure to account for whether the match is taking place during the day, or at night and under floodlights. At some grounds batting under lights is difficult. Teams have different tempos when batting, and that affects the odds. India may not be so good against the new ball, but accelerate with ease whenever they face spinners. The exact opposite

England don’t lose many Tests at Lord’s
The fourth ICC T20 World Cup should be a feast of hitting, spinning, slower balls and slogging – in short, an orgy of expressive shotmaking. But where should you be looking for an edge? Boundaries, like wickets, are points of emotion and will create big price moves. However, understand that this strategy is a trading call. Some bowlers are hard to hit – like Lasith Malinga – so favour the bowling side when they are on. Again, this is a short-term trade, but one based on previous performances. And because the game is based on hitting, be sure to know the size of the boundaries. Big fields mean spinners will take wickets with catches in the deep. The same shot on a smaller field will see the ball in the stands, the crowd cheering and the price moving the opposite way. The tournament is being played across three venues in Sri Lanka. Immediately this screams slow, low spinning pitches – but is this true and, in the hurly-burly of T20, does it matter?

happens with England, who are used to seam bowling but struggle to rotate the strike and lose wickets against spinners. What is noticeable in one-day cricket is the size of price swings for an event like a wicket. The actual price movement can often be too great, allowing the nimble punters to profit before the price resettles; this is especially true if a marquee batsman like Chris Gayle or Sachin Tendulkar is dismissed.

The T20 World Cup should be a feast of hitting, spinning, slower balls and slogging… an orgy of expressive shotmaking
This is a new ground constructed in 2009 and controlled by the Sri Lankan military. There have been two T20 matches played here, between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, in June 2012. Both sides won one each and each victory was achieved batting first. Interestingly the targets set were 133
and 123 but both chases failed to reach 100. Nuwan Kulasekara and Shahid Afridi excelled in both matches, but punters should be backing the side batting first, expecting a total around 120 to 130 to be competitive.
2 Pallekele International Stadium, Kandy Again, two T20 internationals have been played here, as Sri Lanka beat Australia 2-0 in 2011; and again both victories came batting first. This ground has runs, as the four innings with scores of 198, 163, 157 and 149 respectively prove.
3 R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo There were four matches played here in 2009 and Sri Lanka lost the lot. India, Pakistan and New Zealand (twice) defeated them. Guess what? Three of the four victories came batting first. Interestingly four of the eight innings were more than 170 so this ground can produce big scores. So we have a theme here. Win the toss, bat first and increase your chances of winning. Follow that in the T20 World Cup and you could be on to a winning strategy. l The 2012 T20 World Cup plays in Sri Lanka and starts 18 September. Cash Out

The ability to back and lay selections on Betfair gives you the opportunity to trade out of positions and lock in a profit before or during an event. Betfair’s unique Cash Out feature lets you do this with just one click! When you bet with a traditional bookie your options are limited. On Betfair, the Cash Out button cleverly tells you what you could take out at that very moment, to spare you having to nervously wait out the final minutes to see if your selection holds. Take football as an example. During the game the odds on your selection will change as the match progresses. For example, if you backed Manchester United to beat Liverpool at 2.0 and United take an early lead, the odds might come down to 1.4. This gives you a chance to ‘lay off’ your bet by betting against Manchester United and lock in a profit. You can do this using the Lay function on Betfair manually, but by simply clicking Cash Out, Betfair does all the hard work for you and works out the optimum profit on your bet instantly. And because Cash Out saves you time, it can also make you money when every second counts, as lots of you discovered during the gripping finale of last season’s Premier League. When Man City scored to go 1-0 up at QPR, Man United’s price to win the Premier

League soared to 12.42. Anyone who still had the faith, and other punters who’d backed Man United during the season, were on the edge of their seats when first Cisse and then Mackie put QPR 2-1 up and, seemingly, put Man City out of contention. When Dzeko scored for Man City to level the game with a diving header in injury time, canny punters quickly took the Cash Out option for Man United to win the Premier League at 1.09. A few seconds later Aguero stunned the red half of Manchester – and any stubborn red backers – with his last gasp winner. It can pay to Cash Out! l Look for the Cash Out icon on an applicable market to lock-in your profit. You can use the Cash Out function on your Betfair mobile app too, on either Android or iPhone.
Multiples Multiples, or accumulators, are one of the most exciting and entertaining ways to bet, and are all about backing your judgement and putting yourself in line for a big payday if your bet comes off. The simplest multiple is a double, where you place a bet on two selections. If the first bet is a winner, your winnings and your initial stake are placed on the second selection. So if you bet £/€10 on the outcome of two football matches with odds of 3.0 each you will get £/€90 back if they both come in. Your first bet paid out £/€20 in profit, which is added to your initial £/€10 stake for a £/€30 bet on the second match. If this bet wins you get £/€60 in profit plus your new £/€30 stake for a total return of £/€90. The more selections you add, the bigger your odds. Adding just another two 3.0 selections to your bet can boost your payout from £/€90 to over £/€800. It’s now even easier to place multiples with Betfair. Previously you had to navigate to the dedicated multiples section. Now you can place them directly from your betslip. Just make your singles selections as usual and then click the ‘Multiples’ tab on the
betslip. All the different options will be displayed and the odds calculated using Fixed Odds prices which means you don’t pay commission on your winnings. You can place cross-sport multiples too. So, if you think Man United will win the Premier League, India will win the T20 World Cup, and Phil Taylor will be this year’s PDC World Champion, add the selections to your betslip and click ‘Multiples’. You can then bet on the treble or different combinations. You’ll be able to use the new betslip to place multiples on horse racing and greyhounds soon. In the meantime you can place multiples on these markets at multiples.betfair.com.
£2 into £32k! Previously on Betfair you were limited to multiples containing eight selections. With the new integrated betting slip you can add more selections to your multiple for even bigger wins. Sergio Aguero’s late, late winner which secured Manchester City their first title in 44 years was not only celebrated at the Etihad Stadium
– it won one Betfair punter more than £30,000 on a huge 25-fold accumulator! The accumulator included matches from England, Scotland, Italy, Spain, France, Sweden, Argentina, Austria and Belgium – all odds-on shots. All of them came in, turning the original £2 stake into £32,662.73. Think big to win big!
Fixed Odds The Betfair Exchange – where you bet against other punters – offers you the unique proposition of taking either side of the bet. To complement this, Betfair has now also added Fixed Odds betting. With the added convenience of Fixed Odds alongside Exchange Odds, it’s now even easier to get an early bet on at Betfair. Take the Fixed Odds as soon as a market opens or where there are gaps in the market, and you’ll never have to wait for a price. The Exchange – with back and lay prices – is the default setting for Betfair. If you want to check any of the Fixed Odds prices, just click the ‘Fixed Odds’ toggle in a particular market and make the betting decision that suits you. Remember that you’ll usually find better odds on the traditional Betfair Exchange, but you won’t pay commission on any of your Fixed Odds bets as you’re betting directly against Betfair. Fixed Odds will be available for horse racing markets shortly.
Exchange betting With back and lay options and the ability to Cash Out and trade at any time, the Exchange is still the best option and should be your first port of call for the very best odds. The Exchange is the default setting for Betfair.
Fixed Odds By clicking ‘Fixed Odds’ above your market, the screen will change and your only option is to back a selection and bet directly against Betfair. If you can’t find a price on the Betfair Exchange, you’ll be able to get a bet on here.

The Ryder Cup is the ultimate slugfest in golf. Here, we tell you where the smart money will be as Europe and America prepare to do battle in Chicago this September…
Which team will be celebrating at the end?

The Ryder Cup
rom the outright winner to the individual points scorer, not to mention the endless In-Play opportunities and match bets, the Ryder Cup is always a thrill-a-minute ride from start to finish. Forget strokeplay, this is golf in its most stripped-out format, where players go head-to-head in matchplay. There is no appearance fee, no winner’s cheque – just pride and honour, as well as bragging rights for the next two years. So, the big question is: who is going to win? For Europe and captain Jose Maria Olazabal, the showpiece offers another chance to get one over the old enemy. But home advantage is crucial, and US captain Davis Love will shape the Medinah layout to suit his players. The famous Number 3 course is also a venue that Tiger Woods has enjoyed great success on, winning the last two Majors to be played there (the 1999 and 2006 US PGA Championships).

That said, Europe has nothing to fear and priced as underdogs at 2.34 they will relish the battle come 28 September. Here, we give you some early steers on the course, history and key players to make your Ryder Cup a winning one.
TRENDS TO FOLLOW 1983-2010 The Ryder Cup kicked off in 1927 when it was Great Britain and Ireland versus the US, but it was so one-sided – the Americans won 19 of the first 22 events – that in 1979 it was extended to include continental Europe. In reality it has only been a consistent contest since 1983 so, when looking at trends, it’s best to work from here. In a nutshell, from the 14 matches from 1983 to 2010, Europe has won eight times and the US five (the 1989 match was tied). Looking in greater depth, Europe has had the better of the Friday foursomes and fourballs in ten of those 14 matches, and they hold a slight
advantage in Saturday’s play as well. The US, however, have been more dominant in MATCH BETS the singles, taking the Friday morning honours nine times. matches are traditionally This confirms the very close, so 2-2 is a good argument that they shout for correct score. have had, by and Back Europe to rack up more large, the better points over the foursomes, individuals during but the Americans to this time.
haul them back in the Sunday singles.
OUTRIGHT TIP
It’s a home victory for us, so back the US team at 1.99. But expect the margin to be tight – seven of the last 14 events have come down to just one point or less.
Top points scorers Dustin Johnson
Webb Simpson
Luke Donald
Justin Rose
n A bomber from the tee, Dustin Johnson can dominate opponents when he gets on top – he thumped Martin Kaymer 6&4 in the singles at Celtic Manor in 2010. Injury curtailed his early season form but he has a fearless attitude and, with Medinah placing a premium on risk-and-reward golf, you can always expect fireworks.
n Making his Ryder Cup debut in Chicago, US Open champ Simpson has one of the best averages for making birdies from the rough, as well as one of the best putting averages on the PGA Tour. During last year’s Presidents Cup, Simpson was at his best in the foursomes and fourballs.
n Donald got to number one in the world largely because he is one of the best scramblers on the PGA Tour and his ability to get the ball close with his long-distance putting will be crucial in terms of putts conceded. He is a foursomes specialist and his Ryder Cup record is mightily impressive with 8.5 points from ten in three matches.
n Average in length, but with Rose it’s all about hitting greens in regulation and his PGA scoring average has ranked in the top ten for most of the year. He was impressive during his Ryder Cup debut at Valhalla in 2008 when he won three points from four, including a singles defeat to Phil Mickelson.
Things to look out for...
1
Fourball and foursome pairings
2
Media relations
Two great players do not necessarily make a good pairing, as was highlighted during the 2004 Ryder Cup when Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson paired up in the Friday fourball and foursomes and lost both matches. Players who are long off the tee can work well with those who have a good short game, but a lot of it comes down to personal preference. Possible pairings for the Europeans: Rose and Poulter; McDowell and McIlroy; Donald and Westwood. For the US: Mickelson and D Johnson; Kuchar and Simpson; Woods and Mahan.
Tension will mount in the build-up to the matches, and the mood of the camp is generally reflected during the captains’ press conferences. In 2008 at Valhalla Nick Faldo was in a constant battle with journalists who questioned his possible team selection. Both Love and Olazabal are calm personalities, but they will be wearing the strain and this can quickly spread to the playing ranks. Also, look at the players’ body language in the early stages, especially the debutants – they won’t have felt anything like this before.
3
Medinah: calm before the storm
49
Player form
The world rankings are a solid reflection of a player’s seasonal form, but they mean very little come Ryder Cup week and there is no guarantee that a guy ranked third in the world is playing better than a guy ranked 30th. Keep an eye on stats like driving accuracy and putting averages over the last three events before the matches – a player may have had an electric start to the year, but come Ryder Cup selection their form may have dipped while still having enough points to make the team.
4
The course
Medinah’s Number 3 course in Chicago is one of the most iconic layouts in American golf. Tight and tree-lined, at over 7,600 yards it is long. On paper the Americans are longer, while the Europeans are arguably more accurate in terms of fairways hit. Therefore, expect Davis Love to set the course up to favour his bombers. The rough is likely to be shaved down, allowing more freedom from the tee. Love will want fast greens. The PGA Tour this season has seen some of the slickest putting surfaces in recent history and this will be a clear advantage for the home side. Medinah will be set up for attacking golf, and Love will feel this will suit his players more with the galleries behind them. 18+

Trading places Trading turns gambling from an art into a science, and offers some rapid money-making opportunities. We explain how to get involved and lock in a healthy profit rading is betting against the market rather than a selection, and it requires a different mentality to traditional gambling. Traders will look to make a set percentage on each bet. So, if they start with £/€100 and end with £/€103, that is a good trade and a 3 per cent return. It might not sound like much, but these small amounts add up. A simple ‘trade’ would be backing the draw in a football match where the historic data suggests an early goal will be unlikely. The draw will be around 3.5 before the start of the game, and a smart trader can look to back the draw and trade out after a short time at 3.3. If you’ve placed a £/€100 bet on the draw at 3.5 and laid off at 3.3 you can lock in a guaranteed £/€5 profit in 20 minutes. This is the major change from betting to trading. You are no longer dealing with the entire match, but smaller snapshots where the market can move in your favour. If you’re trading on football your approach should be to try to break the match down into smaller periods. Find a trend and you can make money. How do you find these trends? It’s simple – do plenty of research, pour over every stat you can find and look for a reason why you think something will happen again.
Getty Images
T
Trading In-Play The opportunities to trade in football often come from how the action plays out once the match kicks off. There are two main reasons the prices move in a football match – time and goals. As time goes on in a match, for example, the draw odds in the Match Odds market will continue to shorten until a goal is scored. In last season’s 2-1 FA Cup game between Liverpool and Man Utd, the first goal wasn’t scored, by Daniel Agger, until 21 minutes in. And the final winning goal wasn’t scored until the 88th minute. So you could have locked in your profit before taking a gamble on a late goal.
Top tips for trading n Do your research, then do some more n Have a plan with exit and entry points. Have a back-up plan if things go wrong n Don’t be greedy. If you backed at 2.0 to lay off at 1.8, trade out when the price moves n Value is important. Don’t just take a price – Betfair allows you to ask for a price, so ask for the odds you want and see if it gets matched
You can also trade before the game starts. By using sites such as betting. betfair.com you can find out stats on games and price them up yourself. If you think Man Utd have a 60 per cent chance of winning (in other words they will win six times out of ten) then you might give them odds of 1.67. If there is a difference between your price and the odds on offer then you have a trading opportunity. Offer an early price and wait for the odds to shorten near to kick-off before trading out.
Making the right moves It’s also vital you know the effects certain actions will have on the market. If Man Utd are at home to Wigan then Wigan may trade close to 8.0 prior to kick off. If Wigan score early on it is not going to move the prices anywhere near as much as you might expect. And likewise, an early goal will not move the draw market a great deal. On the other hand, if you look at tennis, Andy Murray might be a 1.08 favourite to win in the early rounds, but he only has to lose an early game and the price will move out and you can lock in a profit. Look for opportunities like this where you can make a quick profit from trends or wrong prices, and discover the difference with betting on Betfair. 18+

hat would you do with £4.8 million? Retire and live on a beach in Barbados? Or buy a new house and stick the rest in the bank? This wasn’t just a daydream for one lucky player on the Beach Life slot game, who recently hit the Jackpot for a massive £4,835,763 payday! Beach Life is one of more than 20 Jackpot slots on Betfair Casino that, between them, always have more than £/€1m to pay out. Slots have come a long way since the days of one-armed bandits in smoky casinos up and down the land. With modern day online slots you can expect a blend of the richest graphics, the biggest brands and massive multipliers on your line bets. It will probably come as a surprise to find they are often designed by animators from the likes of Pixar and
W

Dreamworks using the very latest technology. That’s just one reason why they have become one of the most popular options on Betfair Casino. From the Incredible Hulk, to Jackpot Darts and Iron Man there is a massive variety of slots stuffed with bonus games, free spins and, of course, those enormous Jackpots.
Hitting the Jackpot Winning on slots is based on hitting a certain combination of symbols on a single line from left to right. The excitement though really lies in landing a symbol combination that gets you into either the bonus rounds (or features as they are commonly known), or free spins where you can expect big payouts
(sometimes 100+ times your stake if you get lucky). The more lines you play the more chances you have of hitting a winning combination. But the ultimate spin is the big one: the Jackpot. Jackpots work by taking around 1% of each bet from each player and adding it to a Jackpot fund shared across the site. If you’re lucky enough to trigger the Jackpot fund then you could be in for a huge payday. The conditions for winning vary depending on the game so visit the Pay Table within each slot game to see what reel combination will unlock the big prize. Winning a Jackpot, hearing that rush of noise and seeing your balance clocking up at light speed is a moment that every customer dreams of.
Winning on slots! If you’re new to online slot games, don’t let the zig-zagging win lines and terminology bamboozle you! They are actually really simple and great fun to play. Unlike a traditional slot machine with just one winning line, multi-line slot games give you the chance to bet
on many lines at once, with the most common being up to 20 lines in a single spin. This basically means that the number of ways you can win is increased. Simply choose the number of lines and spin the reels. Here are three things to look out for when playing online slots…
1
Check the Pay Table! Before you play any slot game look at the Pay Table to see what specific reel combinations will win you. You can also find out about the bonus features and how to win those elusive Jackpots!
2
Bonus features! Spin your way into a feature and you are taken into a veritable Aladdin’s cave of mulitpliers and madness. Every bonus feature is totally risk-free – the only thing you can do is win!

he ability to back and lay selections is what sets Betfair apart from traditional bookmakers. Exchange Games bring the power of Betfair’s exchange to the gaming world. That means that you can back and lay hands of poker and blackjack, or spins of the roulette table in real time. It’s a truly unique casino experience and one that’s running 24/7, so you can get a game and bet against other players whenever you want. If you understand the basics of each game, and the concepts of backing and laying, the games are extremely easy to play. Let’s take Exchange Blackjack as an example. Four automated players are battling against the dealer to see who can get closest to 21. Each player plays a perfect game 18+ www.gambleaware.co.uk www.gambleaware.com
using Betfair Games ‘Perfect Strategy’, and there are up to seven rounds of betting allowing you to back or lay each player as the action progresses. The first round is blind, and the next round shows you the players’ cards and one of the dealer’s. Depending on the hands, the prices for each selection will change, enabling you to back and lay, or trade out of existing positions. You can even profit from the house by backing the dealer to win or tie all hands. Other popular Exchange Games include Hold’em, Omaha Hi, Baccarat and Bullseye Roulette. If you want to know how to play any of Betfair’s Exchange Games, you can find the rules in the right side of the Betfair interface, or by clicking the ‘?’ icon in Card Derby Racing.

ancy a week in Las Vegas, a chance to play in the World Series of Poker, champagne receptions, private booths at the most prestigious clubs, waterskiing on Lake Mead and gourmet dinners? This July, 59 Betfair Poker players did exactly this. Welcome to the WSOP, Betfair style. The players qualified through a variety of different routes for a package that included a $1,000 buy-in to WSOP Event 59, seven nights accommodation at the five-star Palazzo and $1,500 in travel and spending money. But because this is Betfair Poker, they also found the red carpet was rolled out for them with everything from bungalows in Surrender nightclub to limos to take them to the Rio.

The package included a seat in the $1,000 no-limit hold’em tournament at the WSOP, and $1,500 for flights and spending money. Event 59. The $1,000 buy-in tournament attracted an epic 4,620 entrants with two starting days required to accommodate the huge field. From day 1A four Betfair players – Paul McCann, Rune Jacobsen, Louis Zettelmeier and Petar Zografov – made it through to day 2. But as this was 4 July, US Independence Day, they weren’t the only ones partying that night. The whole of Team Betfair, and several friends and family members, gathered together in the Palazzo’s luxurious Laguna bar for a champagne cocktail reception. The bar, in the heart of the incredible Palazzo, served as the Team Betfair meeting point for the duration of the WSOP and was a place for players to meet the friendly Betfair Poker team. Nobody was hitting the cocktails too hard on the Wednesday night, however, as a grand total of 47 players were in action on day 1B. After a hearty breakfast in the awesome Grand Lux Cafe at the Venetian it was time to head to the Rio. But this being Team Betfair, nobody was catching the bus. Betfair glossary Don’t know your green books from your back bets? Learn the lingo here…
Accumulator About to jump A race that is about to start.
A multiple selection of bets where a backer needs all the selections to win to have a winning bet. The most common accumulators (or accas) are in football. Backing a Premiership Arsenal/Chelsea/ Liverpool acca would require all three teams to win for your bet to return.
Asian handicap
A form of football betting which is very popular in Asia. The handicap means that one team receives a virtual head start, effectively leading the game by a differing amount or amounts before the start.
Application Programmers Interface (API)
The API is a way of accessing Betfair without using the normal interface, allowing members to build their own applications to access Betfair. For more information on the API, please see our Developers Program website, bdp.betfair.com.
Betfair Points odds Decimal
Points that you earn every time you place a bet on Betfair. The more you bet, the more you accumulate; however, strictly speaking, it is calculated on your net profit or loss on each market. These are used to determine your Discount Rate, which reduces the amount of Commission you pay on winning markets.
62
Delays
back
In some markets there is a small time delay present from placing a bet to it being matched. This is to protect our customers, as all pictures and reports have some delay from the actual live event. Without the delay one customer could be ahead of everyone else.
Favourite The lowest priced selection in a market, indicating opinion believes it is most likely to win the event.
bet shortening The action of betting an eventuality will win.
Dutching
Betting on more than one selection within that market to win.
When the odds of a selection get smaller, usually meaning more people are betting on it, or something has happened which means that the bet is now more likely to win.
18+
Betfair has a very active forum that allows you to exchange ideas, gossip, chat and betting-related information with other users.
Drifting A selection price which is lengthening, ie the odds of it winning are getting bigger.
Handicap
Green
Markets where one team is given an artificial head start over the other, levelling the playing field. For example, England may be given a 9.5 point handicap against Wales in a rugby match, expressed as England -9.5 points. The idea of handicaps is that betting prices (odds) should be around even money.
A green book is when all the figures in a Betfair market are green, meaning that no matter what the outcome, you are going to win. See page 34 for more.
markets
www.gambleaware.co.uk
Odds on Betfair are displayed in decimal (as opposed to fractional) odds. Odds of 4/1 would be displayed as 5.0. To quickly calculate your return on a bet, simply multiply your stake by your odds. £/€100 at 2.50 would therefore return £/€250 (this includes your stake).
book
discount
RATE A percentage rate that reduces the commission you pay at Betfair. Your Discount Rate is determined by the number of Betfair Points you accrue.
Unmatched
bet
This is when you have asked for a price bigger than the odds available on Betfair. Your bet will be unmatched until someone comes and matches it. If the bet isn’t matched then it will not stand. The same can happen if you attempt to lay a bet at odds shorter than those available. If no one takes that bet then it will remain unmatched.
betfair reference
Half Time Full Time
A bet that predicts the situation of a match at both half-time (HT) and full-time (FT). To win the bet, both predictions must be correct. So, DrawEverton would require the match to be drawn at half-time with an Everton victory after 90 minutes.
Hedging ‘Hedge your bets’ is a common expression, but not everyone understands the principle. Hedging is designed to minimise your exposure in a bet. Hedging can be done either to a positive position or a negative on Betfair. For example, if you’ve bet on Chelsea at 11.0 to win the Premiership and they’re doing well, you can lay them at shorter odds, locking in a profit. If they’re playing badly you can lay them at longer odds and get some of your stake back.
Market The market is where you place a bet on an event. Any event, such as a soccer match, may have a number of different markets, for example, Match Odds, Handicap and First Goalscorer markets.
Help & learning zone A video and FAQ zone to show you how to use aspects of Betfair that you need more help with – see page 61.
Keep bet
This is an option that you can select before the start of an event. When it goes In-Play your bet remains rather than being cancelled. The reason for selecting this could be that you want to back a team at a certain price but can’t get matched before the event. However, you’re happy to back them In-Play even with the odds lengthening. Using Keep bets also means your bet will not be cancelled even when one of the teams score.
Lay bet
The act of making a bet on something you don’t expect to win. So in a horse race that has ten runners, you decide to lay a horse at odds of 5.0 for £/€10. If the horse wins the race you have a liability or risk of £/€40. If any of the other horses win you win the ‘Backers’ stake of £/€10. You’re effectively on the rest of the field.
Liability This is the amount of money that you can lose if your bet loses.
Partially Matched Bet
K Y C refer and earn
Sometimes not all of the bet you ask for is available by the time you submit the bet. The My Bets tab will display two parts – a matched and an unmatched portion of your bet. The unmatched part of the bet can then be amended or cancelled until it is matched.
commission Betfair charges a commission on your net winnings on a market (the usual commission is 5 per cent), so you only pay if you are successful. If you have a net loss on a market you do not pay commission.
This stands for Know Your Customer. You may have already come into contact with this since registering with Betfair. It is a set of checks that we are legally required to perform to check you are who you say you are.
Refer a friend and you’ll both receive a bonus. Log onto your account, and find your unique referral ID. Your friend just enters this on the registration page.
They’re off
Usually used for horse and greyhounds. “They’re off” means the event has started.
This stands for Starting Price. Bets placed at SP are settled at Betfair’s SP, which, unlike other bookmakers, is calculated by balancing all SP bets This allows you to take a break from and exchange bets at the gambling, blocking access from your entire Betfair account for a minimum of six months. time the event starts.
Self-exclusion In-play Refers to betting on an event that has already started – see page 38.
arbitrage This is where you back a selection higher than you can lay on Betfair. Placing the bet and laying at Betfair enables you to profit whatever the outcome.
T I P s
The best way to make profitable bets is to arm yourself with as much information as you can from the best possible sources. The internet gives you access to experts in every field who can help you make a bet by giving informed advice on a market selection they think is likely to win or lose. You can find some of the best in the business at Betfair’s free tipping site, betting.betfair.com.
Liquidity Liquidity refers to how much money is in the market and available to bet.
Reduction Factor For our horse racing markets we guard against the possibility of non-runners with a system of Reduction Factors. Each horse is allocated a Reduction Factor, based on its likely chance of winning the race. If a horse is a non-runner, the Reduction Factor will be applied to the prices of all matched bets. This is to ensure that layers are not unfairly exposed to large liabilities when the chances of other horses winning have improved. The Reduction Factors are designed to be fair to both backers and layers.
