We might be biased but we think there are a lot of very good reasons why you’re better off betting with Betfair. Unlike traditional bookies, when you bet on the Betfair Exchange you’re betting against other punters like you. This means you can bet how you want – you can request prices, back or lay selections, and trade out of your positions at any time. The power of the Betfair Exchange means you never have to wait for a market to be settled to take a profit or limit your losses. Educating you about the Betfair Exchange and all of its unique features (see p20), and giving you the tools you need to make more informed sports bets (see p41), is central to our growth. It’s why we’ve produced this booklet – to help you get the most out of Betfair and become a better bettor. Every aspect of your interaction with us, whether it’s matching bets, fast payouts, prompt and courteous customer service, and transparency throughout our business, is important. We hope that this is reflected throughout this booklet and we welcome your feedback on anything – it helps us create an even better betting environment for you in the future. You can read our Customer Commitment on p63 and let us know what you think about us by emailing BetfairEdge@betfair.com. We’re working hard to introduce new features all the time. With our unique Cash Out, cross-sport multiples, In-Play betting (with hundreds of free videos of live events available to watch on the site), Fixed Odds (so you can get an early price on a market), and a massive range of options for betting on your mobile, we don’t think there’s been a better time to be a part of Betfair.

GOLDEN SUMMER! TOP 10 STARS FROM THE SUMMER OF 2012

I

t’s fair to say there’s never been another summer like it. The Premier League went down to the wire, before Bradley Wiggins smashed the Tour de France. Then, London’s Olympics and Paralympics both sold out, with record medal hauls for the Brits. After this few thought the Ryder Cup would be more than a footnote, but the ‘miracle at Medinah’ capped off an incredible few months. Join us as we count down the stars – and Betfair markets – from the best summer of sport ever.

1 Bradley Wiggins

6

Wiggins became the first Brit to win the Tour de France, before claiming gold in the Olympic time trial. This made him the joint-most decorated Brit (with Chris Hoy), with seven medals. ● Wiggins was tipped to win the Tour de France at odds of 2.74 on Betting.Betfair.com, where another tipster recommended a massive 10pt bet for time trial gold at 1.85.

3 Mo Farah After failing to qualify for the 5000m final at the 2008 Olympics – ‘the greatest disappointment of my career’ – Farah got redemption in London with double gold and introduced the ‘Mobot’ to the world. ● Farah was heavily tipped to win double gold at 2.52 (10,000m) and 3.0 (5000m).

4 Jessica Ennis

Murray finally delivered when he won the 2012 US Open, becoming the first British man to win a major in 76 years.

There was massive pressure on Ennis to deliver gold and with strong competition a lot of pundits doubted her… until she destroyed her rivals by a massive 306-point margin.

● The 2012 US Open final was Betfair’s biggest ever market with over £67m traded – see p30 for more.

● Ennis was as skinny as 1.93 to win before the event, but delivered for any punters who had the faith.

2 Andy Murray

STARTER’S ORDERS 5 Frankel

8 Usain Bolt

The wonder horse made it 11 in a row in the Queen Anne Stakes. He won by an amazing 11 lengths to earn a Timeform rating of 147, 11 higher than his nearest rival, Black Caviar. By the end of the summer Frankel retired 14-0.

Beaten by Yohan Blake in Jamaica’s trials, Bolt stumbled in his heat but still strolled it and went on to cement his legacy with double gold in the 100m and 200m.

● Frankel won the Queen Anne Stakes from a Betfair Starting Price of 1.12. He was responsible for £7.3m of the £7.7m traded.

6 Ian Poulter With the European team 10-4 down in the Ryder Cup, victory seemed improbable. Then Poulter found inspiration, and five consecutive birdies, to spark an incredible final-day comeback. ● Betting.Betfair’s Paul Krishnamurty tipped up the draw (with a view to trading) at 13.0 prior to the Ryder Cup.

7 Man City In the last game of the season, needing two goals in injury time to win the league, first super-sub Edin Džeko and then Sergio Agüero – with the game’s last kick – turned the English game blue. ● Man Utd were as short as 1.1 to win the league as the games went into injury time. Any Utd backers who didn’t Cash Out (see p37) would have been left singing the blues.

● Betting.Betfair’s Jack Houghton recommended a big bet on Bolt at 1.92 after his 100m heat. ‘For him to be nearly even money is ridiculous.’

9 David Weir The 2012 Paralympics wasn’t just a success for Team GB, but for disabled athletes the world over. David Weir made a great claim for performance of the games with four golds in the 800m, 1500m, 5000m and marathon. ● After his quadruple medal haul, Weir was named fifth favourite on the Betfair Exchange in the 2012 Sports Personality of the Year.

10 Glover and

Stanning

In the excitement of the Olympics you might have forgotten where it started – with Heather Stanning and Helen Glover winning the women’s pair. It was Team GB’s first gold and the first gold for any British female rower. ● After a slow start, Team GB were 17.0 to win 26 golds or more. They ended the games with a record 29. 18+

Betfair Starting Price

Betting.Betfair.com Did you know that last year around 25% of our customers were net winners compared to only 1% of the bookies’ customers? Making sure you are more successful is crucial to our success and to achieve this we’re investing significantly in educational tools and content. Home for much of this content is our blog site Betting.Betfair.com, which features exclusive tips, insight and analysis on a huge range of sports and other betting markets. We’ve gone to great lengths to ensure the content – updated daily – is among the very best you’ll find. Regular contributors range from Ambassadors such as Lee Dixon, Michael Vaughan, Will Greenwood and Paul Nicholls, to sports specialists such as football tactics expert, Michael Cox, and the Betting Writer of the Year, cricket tipster Ed Hawkins. Every major sporting event is covered, with crucial up-to-date information available whenever you want to place a bet. But don’t just see Betting.Betfair.com as a repository for tips. Our aim is to give insight and teach you how to make better bets for yourself, as well as offering immediate value from the experts.

Bet better at Betting.Betfair.com

Unlike other bookies, the Betfair Starting Price is calculated by balancing back and lay bets on the Exchange at the start of each race. We don’t add a margin for profit on the Exchange, which is why we think it can give you considerably better odds.

1

To enable the Betfair Starting Price, tick the BSP box directly above the market. To place a bet at the BSP, just click on the respective back or lay box. When you place a BSP bet you are not taking a price, you are asking for a bet at the close of the market. The BSP is calculated when the race begins.

2

You can make sure the BSP is right for you. If you’re backing you can set a minimum price for your bet. If the BSP doesn’t hit this, your bet is cancelled. Similarly, if you’re laying you can set a maximum price. To set these limits you need to click on ‘Odds limit’ on your betslip.

DID YOU KNOW? The longest-running market on Betfair is Next Man Utd Manager, which has been active for over 11 years and counting. The current frontrunners for Fergie’s job are José Mourinho, David Moyes and Pep Guardiola.

CAN TIGER WOODS BREAK JACK NICKLAUS’ RECORD OF 18 MAJORS? It seemed inevitable after he won 14 Majors in 11 years, but the odds have lengthened considerably on Tiger overtaking the great Jack Nicklaus

11

YES PAUL MAHONEY

ALEX NAREY

Assistant Editor, Golf Monthly magazine

To reach the magic number of 18 from 14, Tiger has to equal Phil Mickelson’s careerhaul of four Major titles; to get to 19, he has to match the great Seve Ballesteros’ five. That’s the size of the task that lies before him. Tiger probably only has five quality years left, so he needs to win one Major a year for the next five, but now the fields are deeper and there are too many good new players, like last year’s US PGA winner Keegan Bradley, and the winners of this year’s US Masters and US Open, Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson respectively. Tiger has it tougher than Roger Federer – he has to beat 155 other players, while Federer only has to defeat seven, and his physical fitness seems unlikely to be able to withstand another decade of top-flight competition. He may well reach 17 Majors to become the greatest player of the modern era, but Jack Nicklaus will remain the greatest ever – and his record will remain intact.

Tiger is never going to be the player he was – swing changes and four bouts of knee surgery mean he is unable to play with that same level of consistency. However, when he is at his best, he is still better than the rest. The argument that Tiger has limited time left is also debatable. Yes, his run of Major wins may have stuttered after the 2008 US Open – but he didn’t win one between 2002 and 2005. He then won six of the next 14. Even with only five ‘good’ years left, the law of averages suggest he’ll be at the business end in the majority of the Majors he’ll take part in, and for many golfers their best years start in their mid-30s. Let’s not kid ourselves about the number of players he has to beat. However, almost two thirds of those can be discounted straight away – they’ll be playing for the money, but Tiger, as always, will be playing to win.

Horse Racing Marketing Fixed Odds on horse racing offers you the opportunity to take an early price. Simply use the price switch toggle to view the different odds available, whether it’s Exchange, Fixed Odds or Betfair SP (BSP) and make the decision that suits you. You don’t pay commission on Fixed Odds bets as you’re betting directly against Betfair.

Use the ‘Keep’ bet feature. If you ask for a price that isn’t matched, select ‘Keep’ before a market goes In-Play and it will remain unmatched until the market hits your selected price. When this happens your bet is matched automatically. This is really useful for shorter distance horse races where there isn’t much time to trade. TOP TIP: Use the ‘Keep’ bet feature to get higher prices matched In-Play

hat do Asheswinning captain Michael Vaughan, two-time Premier League champion Lee Dixon, champion jockey Ryan Moore, master trainer Paul Nicholls and rugby World Cup winner Will Greenwood have in common? Well, apart from all being legends in their chosen fields, they’re all part of Betfair’s elite team of sporting Ambassadors.

Top of their game Betfair has chosen these Ambassadors as they all offer a real level of credibility in their fields. They’ve all been at the very top of their profession and can offer authoritative and insightful opinion that the rest of us are not necessarily privy to. It’s this information, available and regularly updated on Betting.Betfair.com, that can help you make more informed betting decisions. Intelligent thought processes that can swing the balance when you are deciding whether to back or lay a particular selection. Most of us haven’t had to make a call on whether to bat or bowl first during an Ashes Test Match at Lord’s. Or understand what is really required to handle the pressure of a rugby World Cup final, or the tactical approach that is needed to win a Premier League title. But these guys do. And we want to pass their knowledge on. You might not agree with everything they say, and you might not choose to follow their betting advice, but

you can rely on it being there to act as a pointer for your bets. You can find all of the main content from the Ambassadors at Betting.Betfair.com, but you can also follow them through our social media channels and their own Twitter feeds.

“THIS INFORMATION CAN HELP YOU MAKE MORE INFORMED BETS”

And they don’t just provide tips and insight. Betfair’s VIP team organises bespoke events with our team of Ambassadors (see p16 for more). Whether it’s breakfast at Lord’s with Michael Vaughan ahead of a Test match, or travelling in style to Paris to watch the England rugby team take on France with Will Greenwood, we can create money-can’t-buy events that add another dimension to your Betfair experience.

FIND YOUR EDGE

There are lots of good reasons why you’re better off betting on the Betfair Exchange – don’t settle for less

D

o you remember how you used to bet before June 2000? Chances are you strolled to your local bookies on the high street, placed a bet with the fixed odds available and waited for the outcome of the event to see if you’d won or lost. Betfair’s founders, Andrew Black and Ed Wray, had a different vision for the future, one that would revolutionise sports betting across the world. They came up with the concept of an online betting exchange that enabled punters to bet with each other, rather than a bookie who had to skew prices to factor in a margin for profit. In essence,

18+

www.gambleaware.co.uk

one punter would set the price on a market, the other would accept it, and the bet would be facilitated by the Exchange. It’s safe to say that the sports betting world hasn’t been the same since.

Ringing the changes If you’re used to placing a bet with a traditional bookie the world of exchange betting might look a little confusing at first, but it’s actually really simple. On the Betfair Exchange back prices are displayed in blue and lay prices in pink (see right). You can place a back bet in the same way that you would in a high street bookie. So you think Brazil are going to win the 2014 football World Cup? If you bet £/€100 on this, you’re backing Brazil. If Brazil win, you win the bet. If the odds are 4.3 you would get £/€430 back, including your original stake, pre-commission (Betfair usually takes 5% commission on winning bets only). However, with Betfair’s exchange betting, you can also take the other side of the wager and bet that Brazil won’t win the World Cup. You don’t know who will, you’ve just got a hunch that Brazil won’t. If you lay £/€100 at odds of 4.4, you stand to win the £/€100 stake (pre-commission) if any other team wins. If Brazil end up winning the World Cup your total liability is £/€340. And it’s as simple as that. All odds on Betfair are displayed decimally, which makes it easy to see at a glance whether one price is higher than another. 4.3 is obviously higher than 4.2, but it might take a while to work out that 100/30 is bigger than 16/5. (Hover over the decimal odds and you’ll still get the fractional equivalent.)

Backing and laying

1 2

On the Betfair Exchange, back prices are shown in blue and lay prices in pink. Click on 4.3 to back Brazil to win the 2014 World Cup or enter the odds you want to back them at using the arrows on your betslip. Lay prices are shown in pink. Click on 4.4 to lay Brazil to win the 2014 World Cup – you’re saying Brazil won’t win the World Cup. If they do, you lose. Your profit/loss is instantly updated in green and red. Green equals profit on the market taking into account all of your bets.

3 4

“Decimal odds make it easy to see what you could win, or what your liability on a bet might be”

Decimal odds also make it easy to see what you could win, or what your liability on a bet might be. They show you what you would get back per point, including your stake. So, if you successfully back a selection for £/€100 at 2.50, you would get £/€250 back, including your original stake, before commission. Betfair facilitates hundreds of thousands of wagers per

day, with state-of-the-art technology helping you to get your bet on. (On the very rare occasion that the Exchange doesn’t have liquidity, you can use Betfair’s Fixed Odds to get a bet on – see p23.) The real beauty of the Betfair Exchange is that you’re not just betting with a single punter, but possibly hundreds and even thousands of like-minded people who are all offering, or wanting to back, a selection at the same price. This generates huge liquidity and keenly competitive prices, which are often better than you’ll find on the high street.

Trading places You might have heard of people saying they trade on the Betfair Exchange – just 18+

22

like traders on the stock exchange. And it’s this ability to trade a bet that makes Betfair different. In simple terms a traditional bet involves placing a wager and letting the money ride until the outcome. Trading is different. Because of the nature of the Betfair Exchange, prices are constantly moving. Let’s take horse racing as an easy example. You back a horse the night before the race because you’ve identified value at an early price of 4.5. The next day, with tips from pundits and a favourable reaction on the day, the price on the horse starts to shorten. Before the race has started the horse has come in to 2.5, giving you the option to lay for a free bet or guaranteed profit. Say you backed the horse for £/€100 at 4.5. If you then layed the horse for the same

“Trading might take a bit more work but it also provides you with a bigger edge”

In-Play (see p36)

stake at 2.5 you would win £/€200 pre-commission if the horse went on to win. If any other horse won you wouldn’t lose anything as you’d get your initial £/€100 stake back. If you layed the horse for £/€180 at 2.5, you would win £/€80 pre-commission before the race has started and irrespective of what happens. This is an example of a very simple trade, but with the constantly fluctuating prices you can find very small edges and trade regularly to lock in small amounts of profit with very little potential downside. Of course, your initial selection might go on and win, and you might think that you’ve cost yourself money if you’ve traded out, but trading is one example of a sensible long-term betting strategy.

Day trader Trading might take a bit more work than simply placing a bet, but it also provides you with a bigger edge. If you don’t want to invest the time and effort you can use one of Betfair’s unique tools to trade with a single click. Betfair’s Cash Out feature shows you exactly what

FIND YOUR EDGE your profit (or liability) on a certain market is, and with a single click you could lock in a profit and move onto your next bet. Cash Out has been a massive success in bringing trading to the masses and it’s just one of the reasons why betting with Betfair can prove more profitable. (See right for more on Cash Out.)

Find your edge However you choose to bet, betting with fellow punters means that you’ve got a good chance of finding better odds. That’s because the prices on the Exchange aren’t set with a margin like a traditional fixed odds bookermaker. Plus, if you’re not happy with the prices on offer you can ask for your own. If you walk into a bookies and ask for a price of 4.0 on a horse that’s priced at 3.75, you’ll likely be refused. It’s different at Betfair. When a market goes up on the Exchange, the prices are blank. Betfair punters like you fill in the blanks and start building up the liquidity – or money that is available to back or lay. If you don’t like the price on offer you can ask for your own. It may or may not get matched, but it gives you the freedom to bet at a price that’s right for you. And finally, because you’re not betting against the house, Betfair loves winners. We want you to make the most informed betting choices you can, and we’re committed to helping you win as much as possible. We’ve got guides to betting on all the major sports in this booklet (starting on p41), and you can get daily tips from the experts on all the world’s major events at Betting.Betfair.com. Why settle for less?

Cash Out (see p37)

1

Cash Out is Betfair’s unique one-click feature that enables you to close your bet and take your profit/limit your loss when you want. Look for the orange Cash Out icon to show eligible markets. By clicking ‘Take £34.93’ at this point you would lock in £4.93 profit whatever the outcome of the game.

Fixed Odds

1

As well as betting on the Exchange, you can now also place Fixed Odds bets directly with Betfair. Just click on the Fixed Odds toggle to switch from the Exchange. Fixed Odds are shown in green to distinguish them from exchange bets.

2 3 4

Think of Fixed Odds as just like betting with a traditional bookie. You can only place a back bet. With Fixed Odds you can place bets in markets where the Exchange may not be able to offer liquidity at that time. You do not pay commission on Fixed Odds bets, although you may find better odds on the Exchange. Betfair will also often run Fixed Odds promotions. You can’t Cash Out or trade your position with Fixed Odds bets.

1.01

is the lowest price you’ll find on the Betfair Exchange. It signifies as much of a sure thing as you can get before the market is settled. Before the 2014 World Cup qualifier between England and San Marino, England were trading at 1.01 and the fact you could actually back them at all was surprising – they went on to win 5-0 with ease. If you want to make money from backing 1.01 selections, you’ll need a lot of it. Stake £/€100 on a 1.01 selection and if it wins, you’ll win £/€1 – and that’s before your commission is deducted. Lots of people do it though. But, sport being sport, for the hundreds that sail past and win as expected, there are the occasional upsets where the 1.01 backers are sunk. And laying 1.01 shots can be hugely profitable. Lay the same £/€100 stake on a 1.01 shot and if it fails to win you’ll only lose £/€1. Risk £/€100 and you could win £/€10,000 before commission. And as you’ll see, upsets can happen in any sport, at any time. If you’re a 1.01 backer you might want to look away now.

UEFA Champions League – 24 April 2012 Chelsea had a 1-0 lead to defend at the Nou Camp, but Barcelona were already back on terms when John Terry was sent off. They conceded again before Ramires scored a crucial away goal. The visitors parked the bus and somehow held out until injury time. Then, with Barça pushing forward, Torres broke free and rounded the keeper to equalise.

Madrid Masters – 10 May 2012 Verdasco was 0-14 against Nadal before this match and the fact it was due to be played on clay made Nadal even more of a banker. But this was no ordinary clay… Controversially, this was the first year the Madrid Masters was played on a new blue surface (for increased spectator visibility). Nadal blamed it for his subsequent shock defeat to Verdasco.

T20 series – 11 September 2012 New Zealand set 167 but India were still confident of making the chase, and after ten overs were ahead of the Kiwi rate. When they hit 16 off the 13th over the game looked done, but then India hit a slump and scored five, five, four and three in the next four overs leaving a huge ask. They rallied, but needing 13 off the last over, and four off the last ball, they fell short, losing by a single run.

World Cup qualifiers – 17 October 2012 Klose scored twice early on as Germany, on the back of a 6-1 thrashing of the Rep of Ireland, stormed into a four-goal lead against the hapless Swedes. Then, with less than 30 minutes left, Ibrahimavic scored the first of four incredible goals, the equaliser coming from Elm deep into injury time. It was the first time Germany had ever lost a four-goal lead.

id you know that you can combine multiple bets from different sports to win bigger on Betfair? Multiples, or accumulators, are one of the most exciting and entertaining ways to bet, and are all about backing your judgement and putting yourself in line for a big payday if your bet comes off. The simplest multiple is a double, where you place a bet on two selections. Both selections have to come in for you to win. So if you bet £/€10 on the outcome of a game of football and a tennis match, with odds of 3.0 each, you get £/€90 back if they both come in. This is because, splitting the two bets up, your first winning bet would pay out £/€20 in profit, which is added to your initial £/€10 stake for a £/€30 bet on the second. If this bet wins you get £/€60 in profit plus your new £/€30 stake, for a total return of £/€90. The more selections you add, the bigger your odds.

etting In-Play is a great way to add some excitement to a live sporting event. It’s also the smart way to use your judgement to get a jump on the market. You might be watching a game of football which seems to be going completely against the book. You can see the underdogs are on top, but the market is still going with the favourites. Betting In-Play on the Betfair Exchange also lets you trade your position. Get this right and you’ll win whatever the outcome. Say you’ve backed Roger Federer to beat Djokovic, and Federer wins the first set. You could now lay Federer at a shorter price (or use Cash Out - see right) and be guaranteed a profit. If you want to watch and bet at the same time, you’re not limited to the sport on your TV either. Betfair provides videos of hundreds of free live events to bettors each week through Live Video. To see which events are going In-Play click on the new ‘In-Play’ homepage. You can click to filter by what’s on TV or Betfair Live Video, and you can set up your own In-Play page to keep all your active markets in one place (see right). Once an event moves In-Play you’ll see the green tick icon in the market, and remember you don’t need to be in front of the TV or computer – you can bet In-Play wherever you are with Betfair Mobile. 18+

IN-PLAY BETTING

Cash Out

LOCK IN YOUR PROFIT WITH A SINGLE CLICK WHEN YOU WANT

Betting In-Play on the Exchange enables you to lock in a profit when you want, rather than waiting for the event to end. You can do this by backing and laying selections yourself, or you can use Betfair’s one-click Cash Out feature. Cash Out does all the hard work to offer you a value in real time of your bets based on live market prices. ■ Take football as an example. You’ve backed Man Utd to beat Liverpool at 1.9 on the Exchange and United take an early lead. The odds on a United win shorten to 1.4. By clicking Cash Out, you get the optimum profit on your bet at that moment (subject to the standard In-Play delay). ■ Cash Out can make you money when every second counts. When Man City scored to go 1-0 up at QPR on the final day of the Premier League, Man Utd’s price to win the trophy soared to 12.42. Anyone who backed at this price was looking good when QPR went 2-1 up to seemingly put City out of contention. When Dzeko scored for Man City to level the game in injury time, canny punters quickly took the Cash Out option for Man Utd to win the Premier League at 1.09. A few seconds later it would have been too late as Agüero’s last second strike won it for Man City.

IN-PLAY ACTION

2012 US Open final

Andy Murray's historic win in New York was a heart-stopping seesaw match that became Betfair's biggest betting market of all time hen Andy Murray stepped onto the court at the Arthur Ashe stadium there was a feeling something was in the air. After the Scot's heart-breaking loss in the Wimbledon final, his emphatic defeat of Roger Federer at the Olympics hinted at a man about to finally fulfill his destiny. The Exchange isn't one for emotion though and Murray was trading at 3.0, with Djokovic the heavy favourite at 1.5. These odds were made to look wrong early on as Murray surged to a one set lead before going 4-0 up in the second. Murray was now trading at 1.3. Djokovic rallied but to no avail. He lost the second set 7-5, but gained a foothold on the Exchange where punters had seen signs of a recovery to price it 1.4/3.8 in Murray's favour.

Make this football season the most exciting yet with our comprehensive guide to betting on the beautiful game

ootball is the most popular sport in the world for a reason. It’s exciting, dramatic and unpredictable – making it brilliant for betting. It is, however, a highly emotive sport, and some fans find it hard to separate heart from head. If you’re happy placing bets to make games more exciting then don’t worry – bet with who you want to win and bet against the team you want to lose. However, if you’re looking to profit you need to fall back on hard statistics.

There are plenty of stats out there. A web search will keep you occupied for weeks, but statto.com, soccerstats.com and whoscored.com are all great places to start. Form, home and away, is vital – some teams have

incredible records at home but don’t travel well. Recent form is crucial, along with injuries and suspensions to key players. If the top scorer, keeper or captain is out, it can have a big effect on the team. Finally, head-to-head form can show up trends that you wouldn’t have assumed from looking at overall form. For example, despite both being classed as big teams Tottenham have only beaten Man Utd once in their last 23 meetings in the Premier League, home or away.

Stats can show up trends that give you massive value. Take the Premier League for example. Certain teams – despite never threatening at the top – do consistently well at home, even against top teams. Stoke City, in particular, have an extremely impressive home record since being promoted to the top flight in 2008. Up to the end of the 2011/12 season they’ve won 34, drawn 23 and lost 19. They’ve drawn ten of 18 games against the big four including the last six – all four in 2011/12 (0-0 v Chelsea, 1-1 v

In the 20 seasons the Premier League has been running, Man Utd have won 12 titles. Seven of these were won when another team topped the table at Christmas, and they came within a squeak of making it eight last year. Things are a bit more settled at the bottom. Of the 20 teams that have been bottom at year-end, only one has gone on to avoid relegation – West Brom in 2004/05.

Find the value

44

Because of the sheer volume of football being played it’s wise to specialise if you’re going to go with your own judgement. Following a single league enables you to track form properly, and delving even deeper into more obscure markets lets you build up a decent predictive model and find value even in games that appear to have little in the way of match odds. Michael Cox, one of the football contributors at Betting. Betfair.com, is a keen advocate of finding value this way: ‘If you follow the cards market or the corners market throughout a season, and work out when and why sides collect them, you can often find bets that appear particularly overpriced. I think it’s wise to be expert in a niche area.’

Trading scores The correct score market can be very profitable, and on Betfair you don’t have to

“FIND PATTERNS LIKE THIS AND YOU’LL BE WELL ON YOUR WAY TO MAKING A PROFIT” predict the exact result to win. For example, after doing your research on a game you’ve identified that the home side very seldom fails to score.

www.gambleaware.co.uk

You also think the game will be tight – both sides are frequently involved in low scoring games. Assuming the home team is going to score at least once, by backing 1-0, 2-0 and 1-1 you cover all the results under 2.5 goals. You can then use the over/ under 2.5 goals market for insurance. If the game is still 0-0 after 20 minutes you can lay under 2.5 goals, looking to get at least your initial stake back. Once these four bets are matched, all you need is for the home team to score and you can’t lose. If it stays 0-0 until the end you’d lose all your bets, so you should consider taking a hit and cutting your losses using Cash Out if it’s still goalless after 65 minutes. You’ll make a loss but if you start taking these trading lines you need to protect your bank and have a strategy that takes all factors, including the worst-case scenario, into account.

horse racing Horse racing is the sport of kings, and with daily meets across the world there’s always a race to bet on and profit to be made 46

here are two main types of horse racing to bet on in the UK and Ireland: flat racing and National Hunt. In the former horses run on the flat, and in the latter the horses jump over obstacles. Within each of these general categories there are a host of variations it pays to get wise to. In horse racing the races vary by distance and category. The best races are Class 1, with Group 1 or Grade 1 the best of the best. Beneath these listed races are a range of lower graded runs, down to races such as sellers and claimers. The better races are the ones to focus on as there will be more reliable form to follow and fewer unknowns.

T

Flat racing Races on the flat are run from five-furlong sprints (there are eight furlongs in a mile) to stamina sapping contests run 18+

over two miles or more. As you would expect, a horse that can win a five furlong race is very different to one that can win over two miles. The distance also has an impact on the effect of the course and the draw. The draw is a unique factor in flat racing which doesn’t exist in National Hunt, where they don’t start in stalls. The draw is the position allocated to a horse in the starting stalls, with position one being furthest to the left from the position of the runners as they leave the stalls. This can have a significant effect – for example, horses running into a bend

from an outside draw are clearly at a disadvantage. It’s worth familiarising yourself with the layouts of a course before looking at the draws, and you can do this easily with the course guide at timeform.com/free.

National Hunt National Hunt racing is predominately a fixture of UK horse racing in the winter and spring months, culminating in the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National. Races can either be hurdles or chases. Hurdles are races with obstacles over 4.5 feet in height, while chases are races run with obstacles over 3.5 feet. As you would expect, a good hurdler is not necessarily going to make a good chaser and vice versa. There are also National Hunt flat races known as bumpers and hunter chases, but these are less common.

KEY STATS BETTING ON HORSE RACING IS AS EASY AS ONE, TWO, THREE… ■ FORM GET COMPREHENSIVE STATS AT TIMEFORM.COM/FREE ■ GOING THE CONDITION OF THE COURSE HAS A HUGE BEARING ON THE RACE ■ MARKET WATCH FOR SIGNIFICANT MOVES IN THE MARKET

DON’T MISS! CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL ■ 12-15 March 2013 Synchronised won last year’s Gold Cup, beating defending champion and favourite Long Run after Kauto Star was pulled up. The 2013 Gold Cup runs on 15 March.

EPSOM DERBY ■ June 1 2013 Aidan O’Brien and jockey Joseph became the first father/son combo to win the event, with Camelot beating Main Sequence and Astrology last year.

The key to being a winning horse racing bettor is finding the value in a race. This can be determined from a multitude of factors from the jockey to the draw. But there are always three things you should focus your attention on: the form, the going and the course.

Follow the form The form of a horse is simply how it has performed in its most recent races. Reading the form guide is fairly simple with the most recent results on the right. So a form guide of 12956 would mean a horse finished sixth in its most recent race, fifth in the one before that and so on. If you see a ‘c’ next to a horse’s name it means it has won a race at that course before and a ‘d’ means it has won over that distance. Beyond this there are also form ratings, compiled by ratings agencies such as 18+

training Timeform – the higher the rating the better the horse. So you just look for the horse with the highest rating and lump on? It’s not quite that easy. While in flat racing sprints (races under six furlongs) this might be wise, it rarely gives the full picture. In order to place a smart bet there are other factors to consider…

Horses for courses

48

Not all race tracks are created equally. In fact there are huge differences between the various tracks around the country, and it’s no surprise to learn that many horses will often perform better at certain courses. For example some flat courses are right-handed and some are left-handed. Some are undulating and some are flat. The most common example of this is the National Hunt course at Cheltenham, where the famous long uphill

finish means horses need real stamina to win there. As a result it tends to be wise to follow previous course form, and to place less importance on horses whose wins have come at less arduous tracks. Pay attention to the course and how the horses have performed there in the past.

Ground yourself

“Pay attention to the course and how the horses have performed there in the past” 18+

www.gambleaware.co.uk

The going is the condition of the ground, which can range from firm to heavy, and it can have a huge impact on the race. Most horses will have a preference for running on one type of ground. A horse that has won all his races on firm, fast ground is less likely to be found finishing up front in a tough slog in the wet. Horses who have shown a tendency in the past to act on heavy ground will really come

through for you in the tough winter months. If you can find a horse with a good record on heavy ground then it’s probably a good shout in bad conditions, even if its form guide is poor.

Specialise and profit It’s unrealistic to become an expert in all forms of horse racing, so try and focus on a specific area such as flat sprints. Focusing on a certain type of race will let you understand more quickly how going, form and the different courses affect the chances of a horse in a race. Stick to a certain type of race and you will soon find your knowledge and judgement of what factors to place more importance on increasing accordingly. From there you can start expanding the range of race types you study. Good luck!

tennis It’s the ultimate one-on-one contest and one of the best sports to bet on if you arm yourself with the right stats ennis is such a pure sport (the officials are largely there to call the score), it’s fantastic for betting on. Essentially you’re picking the winner on a number of factors you can more or less control, such as form, fitness, surface suitability and head-to-heads. The only outside influence that can’t be factored in is the weather. Rain stops play, but wind doesn’t and that can be a massive factor, as was highlighted in the 2012 US Open semi-final between Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych. Before placing a match bet, arm yourself with all of the relevant stats using free online resources such as tennis. matchstat.com and the ATP site. You need to know how your player has been performing recently in all tournaments and specifically on the surface the upcoming match will be played on. Previous matches between the two are very relevant unless they were played years ago, in different conditions. If one of the two players is left-handed, previous matches against lefties need looking at.

T

50

No quit Then there are the more subtle stats that need to be checked. 18+

www.gambleaware.co.uk

For example, US pro James Blake has a poor record against players who serve very big, such as Ivo Karlovic and John Isner. The surface plays a big part too because a player may have a poor record against another on clay, but might be a grass-court specialist. Court speeds have slowed down a lot in recent years and there is now not a big difference between grass, clay and hard.

In fact the quickest conditions of 2012 were arguably those found on the blue clay of Madrid at altitude, but it still holds true that many clay court specialists prefer to play on the dirt all year round. Specialists on the clay include Carlos Berlocq, Filippo Volandri, and Albert Montañés. You also need to look out for retirements. In smaller events certain players won’t think twice about quitting to protect an injury. Notable quitters include Michaël Llodra and Nikolay Davydenko. Players that rarely, if ever, quit are also valuable, like Roger Federer, Sam Querrey and Marin Cilic.

Profit In-Play Conditioning is crucial especially as we see an increase in slow surfaces that put emphasis on longer rallies. If your pick has had a long match the previous day you wouldn’t want to risk him

If your pick is scheduled to play someone against whom they have a poor record, that should enter your thinking. Often one half of the draw can appear much more straightforward so you could choose players in the easier half to back. And finally, there’s In-Play betting. With prices fluctuating on every single shot, tennis is a trader’s dream. Momentum and conditioning are key here. Look out for players that have played the day before and get into another epic. Djokovic did amazingly to claw back two sets when 2-0 down against Andy Murray in the 2012 US Open final, but his legs had given up in the fifth. Betting on... Ex-cricket pro turned punter Iain Fletcher explains the basics of cricket betting and how to lock in a profit whatever the game here are two golden rules to follow if you’re looking to bet on Test matches. First, you need to analyse the results of the previous three-to-five years in the host country, and work out the number of wins and draws. Next, research the results for each of the Test grounds, and use these stats to calculate percentages of victories by team batting first and second. For example, England have played 12 Tests at Lord’s in the past five years; they’ve won six, drawn five and lost one. Batting

cricket first provided all but one winner. On nine occasions the team that won the toss chose to field. These teams lost four, drew four and only won one – knowing that helps you find value. During the match there will be specific events you can target. For example, England are very good bowling with the new ball and taking early wickets. However, there is a spell after the early shine where the ball becomes soft and batting easier. And then there’s the possibility of reverse swing to consider! During that

time England will try to contain more and be less aggressive, and batsmen can accumulate runs. Knowing this allows you to either close positions, or back the batting side for a short-term profit. Weather is a vital part of cricket, but it can have less effect than most punters think. The ICC regulations allow for time lost to be made up on subsequent days by early starts or late finishes. That doesn’t stop the draw coming in when the players leave the field. Laying at this shortened

Betting on ODIs Again, start with the baseline of stats and account for when the match is taking place – day or night. Batting under lights is difficult at some grounds. Teams have different tempos when batting and that affects the odds. India may not be so

good against the new ball, but accelerate with ease whenever they face spinners. The exact opposite happens with England, who are used to seam bowling but struggle to rotate the strike and lose wickets against spinners. Betting on Twenty20 This is the adrenalin junkie’s perfect sport, but you should still adhere to basic stats before attempting to trade. The game is so frenetic that big wins or losses can happen quickly, so stick to a simple plan. If the pitch is good, back the side batting first, hoping for a good start. Boundaries, like wickets, are points of emotion and create price moves that you can profit from. Some bowlers (like Lasith Malinga) are hard to hit, so favour the bowling side when they’re on. ith more markets than ever before and a plethora of statistics available, few sports can yield potentially bigger betting profits than golf. Much like horse racing you have the chance to bet on the winner or a place – usually a top-four or top-ten finish. are players who will perform consistently well, but just don’t often convert their good form into a win. There are other profitable markets you should keep an eye on. Tournament matchbets enable you to bet on who will shoot the lowest score in a particular group. You can also bet on top US, European or rest of the world player in a particular tournament. In-Play betting can also give you a big edge. Golf is

constantly at the mercy of changing weather conditions and a player’s momentum as he makes a charge down the back nine. With groups scheduled to go out at different times you can take advantage when you spot potentially game-changing conditions.

The rule of three When it comes to picking a player to back, it’s logical that the book might start with the best-ranked in the field as favourite, but there are three important factors you should consider. Firstly, you need to look at a player’s form, which can fluctuate over the season. There are many demands on the modern-day golfer, with travelling and fatigue playing a big part. The secret is to catch a player at the right time; players often play their way Ian Poulter helped Team Europe to an incredible win at the 2012 Ryder Cup

TRAINING into form one week with a couple of good rounds, before winning a week or so later. Also, back-to-back wins are not uncommon. Do some basic research and try to spot patterns to give yourself an edge over the market. Another key factor for successful golf betting is studying the course. Some players just don’t have the necessary shape of shot to compete on certain layouts. Factor in a player’s relative weakness against a course’s defence. For example, Sergio Garcia has always struggled at the US Masters – while the Spaniard remains one of the game’s best ball-strikers, putting issues have plagued his ability to score well here. Alternatively, some players are course specialists. Luke Donald has had huge success on American-style target

Steve Rawlings (The Punter) ■ Rawlings has had a very profitable 2012. ‘Triple-figure priced winners are commonplace in golf,’ says Rawlings ‘and with a myriad of stats available for courses and players alike, the clues are all there to dig them out.’

Sergio Garcia has always struggled at the US Masters

KEY STATS CONSIDER THESE THREE FACTORS BEFORE BACKING A PLAYER ■ FORM LOOK FOR A RUN OF FORM THAT COULD SUGGEST A WIN IS COMING ■ COURSE CERTAIN PLAYERS SUIT CERTAIN COURSES – MATCH THEM UP ■ WEATHER CHECK THE FORECAST – SOME PLAYERS LOVE BAD CONDITIONS

DON’T MISS!

THE OPEN ■ 18-21 July 2013 Muirfield Golf Course, Scotland

THE MASTERS ■ 11-14 April 2013 Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, US

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP ■ 8-11 August 2013 Oak Hill Country Club, Rochester, NY, US

US OPEN ■ 13-16 June 2013 Merion Golf Club, Ardmore, US

Ernie Els won The Open in 2012, ten years after his last Major triumph

courses because his ability to hit it close with his irons is easily the strongest part of his game. Then there’s the weather. We’ve already mentioned how a round of golf can be completely altered by changing weather conditions, and some players relish the wind and rain. Darren Clarke’s win at The Open in 2011 came down, in no small part, to a combination of being relaxed on a links course and being comfortable in wet and windy weather. He didn’t start the week as favourite, but a number of punters would have backed him knowing his ability to perform in such conditions.

Final thoughts Finally, before you lump on, wait to see the tee times and check the weather forecast again. Look at the groups as some players perform better if there are no big names in their three-ball. Also, look to see how a player performed last time they played, even if it’s just the last round. And remember, defending champions have extra media commitments, which can have an effect on their form. 18+

the more chances you have of hitting a winning combination. But the ultimate spin is the big one: the Jackpot. Jackpots work by taking around 1% of each bet from each player and adding it to a Jackpot fund shared across the site. If you’re lucky enough to trigger it you could be in for a huge payday. The conditions for winning vary depending on the game so visit the Pay Table within each slot game to see what combination unlocks the big prize. Exchange Games Experience exchange betting on your favourite casino games, all with an In-Play twist! xchange Games bring the power of exchange betting to the gaming world. You can back and lay hands of poker and blackjack, or try your luck on the roulette table in real time, 24/7, so you can bet against other players whenever you want. If you understand the basics of each game, and the concepts of backing and laying, the games are easy to play. Let’s take Exchange Blackjack as an example. Four automated players are battling against the dealer to see who

can get closest to 21. Each player plays an optimal game using Betfair Games Perfect Strategy, and there are up to seven rounds of betting. The first round is blind, and the next round shows you the players’ cards and one of the

dealer’s. Depending on the hands, the prices for each selection will change, enabling you to back and lay, or trade out. You can even profit by backing the dealer to win or tie all hands. Other popular Exchange Games include Hold’em, Omaha Hi, Baccarat and Bullseye Roulette. There’s a tutorial for Exchange Roulette on the right, and you can find the rules for each individual game on the right side of the Betfair interface, or by clicking ‘?’ in Card Derby Racing.

How to play…

Bullseye Roulette IF YOU’RE A FAN OF CASINO ROULETTE, YOU’LL LOVE THIS EXCHANGE-BASED VARIATION – WE SHOW YOU HOW TO HIT THE BULLSEYE Roulette is probably the world’s most popular casino game. The sound of the ball gliding round the wheel and the excitement of seeing the ball nestle in your number is hard to beat. Bullseye Roulette adds a unique twist to the game with Betfair’s exchange betting, enabling you to trade in and out of your positions as the game progresses and the prices change. You can back any number of selections, but if you’re the person who never seems to hit your numbers, why not lay selections instead?

Placing bets

1

You can place bets through the ‘Board View’ by clicking the back or lay chips and placing them on your selections. Alternatively, click ‘List View’ to see a traditional exchange market and place your bets that way. So, you could back the first dozen at odds of 2.98 or lay at 3.05. The green circle in the centre of the roulette wheel lets you know how long you’ve got to finish your bets before the wheel is spun.

2

Once the blind bet round is over, eight balls are dropped in succession. The slot that each ball lands on converts the adjacent pockets into its number and colour. So, if a ball lands in Red 16, Black 24 and Black 33 become Red 16, and Black 24 and 33 are eliminated. As the balls drop, certain numbers and colours will start to become very dominant on the wheel and the prices adjusted accordingly.

3

You can bet again or trade out of existing positions before the second round. In the second round five balls are dropped and these expand pockets in the same way. After another round of betting, the third round drops three balls. You can then bet again before the final two balls are dropped. When the final ball is dropped there will be just two pockets left to define the winning number.

Betfair Poker TEAM BETFAIR AT THE

WSOP Fly to Vegas, live like a rock star and pit your game against the world’s best ancy a week in Las Vegas, a chance to play in the World Series of Poker, champagne receptions, private booths at the most prestigious clubs, waterskiing on Lake Mead and gourmet dinners? In July 2012, 59 Betfair Poker players did exactly this. Welcome to the WSOP, Betfair style. The players qualified through a variety of different routes for a package that included a $1,000 buy-in to WSOP Event 59, seven nights at the five-star Palazzo and $1,500 in travel and spending money.

Champagne supernovas Team Betfair arrived in Vegas on July 3, with a night to get over the jetlag, before the first 12 players sat down for day 1A of WSOP Event 59. The $1,000 buy-in tournament attracted an epic 4,620 entrants, with two starting days required to accommodate the huge field. Four Betfair players made it through to day 2. But as this was July 4, US Independence Day, they weren’t the only ones partying. The whole of Team Betfair, and several friends and family 18+

members, gathered together in the Palazzo’s luxurious Laguna bar for a champagne reception. Nobody was hitting the cocktails too hard on the Wednesday night, however, as a grand total of 47 players were in action on day 1B. After a hearty breakfast in the awesome Grand Lux Cafe at the Venetian it was time to head to the Rio. But this being Team Betfair, nobody was catching the bus... A few minutes later six limos rolled up outside the famous Rio Casino. Team Betfair filed out and headed up the red carpet to take their seats in one of the biggest tournaments of the year. By the time play finished later that night there were still eight players remaining, giving Team Betfair a total of 12 players returning to fight for the gold bracelet.

In the money! When the bubble broke at around 3.30pm on day 2, there were five Betfair players in the money – Louis Zettelmeier, Eli Heath, Rajesh Modha, Michael Team Betfair’s Ortner and Harald Harald Olsen Olsen. Sadly only cashed for Harald Olsen made over $20k it through to day

3, and he ended play in a really tough spot with just four big blinds left. Thankfully, that was a problem for another day, as it was time for the official Team Betfair dinner at Lagasse’s Stadium in the Palazzo. On Saturday morning, many of Team Betfair headed back to the Rio to rail Olsen. With his short stack he had to work a miracle, and he very nearly managed it. Olsen played the short stack like a star, and spun his chips up to 450,000 before suffering a cruel

After Olsen’s heroics it was time to celebrate with the Team Betfair player party at Surrender nightclub – Las Vegas’ most exclusive nightspot. With a view of the indoor pools, water features and the dance floor, Team Betfair players were treated to not one, but two exclusive bungalows, side by side, in the VIP area of the nightclub with full table service and $1,000

The final countdown It was an incredible end to an unbelievable week in Vegas. And we’re going to be doing it all again, and hopefully coming back with a gold bracelet, in 2013. If you want to take part, look out for the WSOP satellites on Betfair Poker. If you play your cards right you could find yourself in Vegas in 2013 playing for a life-changing sum of money. ACCUMULATOR A multiple where a backer needs all the selections to win to have a winning bet. The most common accumulators (or accas) are in football. Backing an Arsenal/ Chelsea/Liverpool acca would require all three teams to win for your bet to return.

64

APPLICATION PROGRAMMERS INTERFACE (API) An API is a way of accessing Betfair without using the normal interface. For more info see bdp.betfair.com.

ARBITRAGE This is where you have backed a selection at a higher price and you lay on Betfair at a lower price. It enables you to profit whatever the outcome.

ASIAN HANDICAP A form of football betting. The handicap means one team receives a virtual head start, ‘leading’ by a differing amount or amounts before the start.

BACK BET The action of betting that an eventuality will win.

BETFAIR POINTS You earn points each time you bet on the Exchange (Fixed Odds and multiples don’t earn you points). The more you bet, the more points you get, although it’s actually calculated on the net profit or loss on a market. These points determine your discount rate, which reduces the commission paid on winning markets.

COMMISSION Betfair charges a commission on your net winnings on a settled market (usually 5%), so you only have to pay if you’re successful. If you have a net loss on a settled market you do not pay commission.

www.gambleaware.co.uk

DECIMAL ODDS Odds on Betfair are displayed as decimals. Calculate your return simply by multiplying your stake and the odds. £/€100 at 2.50 will return £/€250 (including stake).

DELAYS In some markets there is a small delay in placing a bet. This protects customers, as there is always a delay from live events.

DISCOUNT RATE This reduces the commission you pay on the Exchange. Your discount rate is determined by the number of points you accrue on the Exchange.

DRIFTING A price that is lengthening, ie the odds of it winning are getting bigger.

DUTCHING To bet on more than one selection within a market to win.

EXCHANGE Betting on the Exchange enables you to back and lay selections, matching prices with other punters. You can trade out of your position, and use Cash Out to take a profit or limit losses.

FAVOURITE The lowest priced selection in a market, indicating opinion believes it is most likely to win.

FIXED ODDS As well as Exchange bets, you can now place Fixed Odds bets directly with Betfair. Fixed Odds bets are back bets only, and you can’t trade out of your position or use the Cash Out feature.

GREEN BOOK Because you can back and lay on Betfair you can achieve what’s known as a green book, where you will profit whatever the outcome.

HALF-TIME/ FULL-TIME A bet that predicts the situation of a match at both half-time (HT) and full-time (FT). To win, both must be correct.

HANDICAP MARKETS Markets where one team is given an artificial head start, levelling the playing field. For example, England may be given a 9.5 point handicap against Scotland in a rugby match, expressed as England -9.5 points. The idea is that odds should be around even money.

BETFAIR REFERENCE

HEDGING Hedging minimises your exposure in a bet. Hedging can be done either to a positive position or a negative one. For example, you’ve bet on Chelsea at 11.0 to win the Premiership and they’re doing well. You can lay them at shorter odds on the Exchange, locking in a profit. If they’re doing badly you can lay them on the Exchange at longer odds and get some of your stake back.

HELP & LEARNING ZONE A video and FAQ zone to show you how to use aspects of Betfair that you need more help with – see p62.

IN-PLAY Refers to betting on an event that has already started – see p36 for more.

KEEP BET The reason for selecting ‘Keep’ bet could be you want to back a team at a certain price but can’t get matched. If you select ‘Keep’ bet before the start of an event your bet remains rather than it being cancelled once the event goes In-Play.

KYC Stands for ‘know your customer’ and is a set of legally required checks to check you are who you say you are.

LAY BET An Exchange bet on something that you don’t expect to win. For example, you lay a horse at odds of 5.0 for £/€10. If any other horse wins, you win the backer’s stake of £/€10. If the horse you layed wins, you have a liability of £/€40.

LIABILITY This is the amount of money that you will lose if your bet loses.

LIQUIDITY This refers to the amount of money in a market on the Exchange.

MARKET The market is where you place a bet on an event. Any event, such as a football match, may have a number of different markets.

PARTIALLY MATCHED BET Sometimes not all of the bet you ask for is available when you submit a bet on the Exchange. The ‘My Bets’ tab will display a matched and unmatched portion of the bet. The unmatched part can be updated or cancelled.

REDUCTION FACTOR In horse racing markets we guard against non-runners by allocating each horse a reduction factor, based on its chance of winning. If a horse is a non-runner, this will be applied to the prices of all matched bets. The Reduction Factors are designed to be fair to both backers and layers.

REFER AND EARN Refer a friend and you’ll both receive a bonus. Log onto your account, and find your unique referral ID. Your friend just has to enter this on the registration page.

SELF-EXCLUSION This blocks access to your Betfair account for a minimum of six months. Selfexclusion can’t be reversed.

SHORTENING When the odds of a selection get smaller. It usually means more people are betting on it, or something has happened which means the bet is more likely to win.

18+

SP This stands for starting price. Bets placed at SP are settled at Betfair’s SP, which, unlike other bookmakers, is calculated by balancing all SP and exchange bets at the time the event starts.

THEY’RE OFF Usually used for horses and greyhounds. ‘They’re off’ means the event has started.

TIPS Arm yourself with tips from the best possible sources before placing your bets. You can find some world class tipsters at Betfair’s free content blog, Betting.Betfair.com.

UNMATCHED BET This is when you have asked for a price bigger than the odds available. If the bet isn’t matched then it will not stand. The same can happen if you attempt to lay a bet at odds shorter than those available.
