eighbours of an Abbotsford home targeted in both an arson and shooting attacks are rattled as the calm of their cul-de-sac is shattered. Abbotsford Police were called out at 2:50 a.m. Wednesday after a home in the 2000 block of Monteray Place in east Abbotsford was shot up. The incident occurred within 24 hours of a suspicious First reported @ abbotsfordtimes.com fire at the same home where a portion of the front of the house was burned early Tuesday. “I’m scared. I’m worried about my child,” said one resident. “I didn’t hear anything. Everybody was sleeping and the policemen knocked on my door.” Another resident said there had never been any trouble in the neigbourhood before. “I’m not comfortable. It’s a shock,” said the resident, who also didn’t want to be named. “My [child] said, ‘it’s just like a movie.’ But it’s far from a movie because it’s real.” Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said no one was injured in the shooting. The home, which suffered damage to the front window and front of the house from gunfire, is being targeted, MacDonald said. However, he stressed neither the occupants nor the home itself has a “criminal past.” “People can be targeted for a variety of reasons,” said MacDonald. “Clearly after a suspicious fire and this brazen act there’s no doubt the home is being targeted. But who the suspects are and the motive still have to be determined.” Investigators have received information that a male was seen running from Monteray Place to a vehicle on nearby Marshall Road following the shooting. There have been three other incidents of shots being fired at homes this year. In two of those shootings, it appeared there was some link to gang or criminal violence. A woman was almost shot in her vehicle making her way down the driveway of the family home of Barinder or Brian “Shrek” Dhaliwal in the 2500 block of Bradner Road on Jan. 4. A home on Hope Road was also mistakenly shot up Feb. 20. Police believe the attack was aimed at gang associate Lance Wust who actually lived in a different house along the same street. Anyone with information about the recent arson or shooting should contact the APD at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

ayson Smith will get the chance to do what so many young Canadians dream of their entire lives. Jayson, 10, will skate out onto the ice at Rogers Arena with his hero, Roberto Luongo, when the Vancouver Canucks take on the Boston Bruins in what could be a historic Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Friday night. “I’m really excited,” said Jayson, who plays goalie for the Abbotsford Hawks Atom A2 team. “It’s cool to skate out and meet all the Canucks.” Understandably, the young netminder is just a little nervous about his impending brush with fate. To hit the ice in front of more than 18,600 towel-waving diehard Canuck fanaticals with the Stanley Cup on the line seems easier than it looks. The first series went seven games, the second went six, the last one was in five and it just seemed like it would be a sweep for this one.” His schoolyard friends at McMillan Elementary and his family all think what he’s about to do is “pretty cool,” said Jayson, adding maybe a few are a bit jealous. Even his father Brian, who helped register Jayson for the great skate through a Canucks contest, admitted he wouldn’t mind taking a twirl around Rogers Arena when the Canucks take to the ice. “This is something that not every kid out here gets to do so it’s pretty neat,” said Brian. “I told him I’d do it if I could.” The reality that Jayson could skate out with the Canucks on the same night the team wins its first Stanley Cup in the franchise’s 40-year history suddenly struck the young puck stopper on Monday night after Game 3. “I could get to see the Stanley Cup and that sounded really cool,” he said.

Upfront Briefly City seeking spirit
The City of Abbotsford is looking for citizen participation around the issues of both spirit and service. The city has launched a Neighbourhood Spirit Contest complete with prizes. Residents who plan and undertake some sort of community project – a neighbourhood cleanup, a street hockey tournament, or even painting park benches – can enter the competition. Entrants just have to form a group, come up with an idea, submit their idea and story online to the city and take some pictures of their progress. Prizes include donations of a barbecue from Rona, a patio furniture set from Canadian Tire, a week’s canoe rental, a block party, dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory and more. Van Dongen steeled for Gill’s Liberal run

bbotsford-South MLA John van Dongen is quashing rumours he will not seek re-election when the next provincial election is called. The veteran provincial politician, first elected to Victoria in 1995, was responding to the announcement from Moe Gill, an Abbotsford city councillor, who said he would run against van Dongen when the next liberal candidate nominations become open. “What’s happened is there have been persistent rumours for two years that I was not running for re-election,” van Dongen told the Abbotsford-Mission Times on Tuesday. “Those rumours have always been untrue . . . I will be seeking re-election in the next provincial election, whenever it is called. I’ve always been very clear about that.” Van Dongen was contacted just hours after the online publication, Public Eye, reported Gill would seek a

Abbotsford MLA John van Dongen is adamant he will be running for re-election. nomination for the B.C. Liberal Party for the Abbotsford-South riding just as soon as it became available. The report indicated that Gill had made aware his intentions to seek nomination to van Dongen, Premier Christy Clark, constituency asso-
ciation president Ron Gladiuk, the Liberal election readiness committee and its president Sharon White. Van Dongen denied Gill contacted him first, and insisted it was the other way around. “I contacted him and suggested we

He didn’t come and talk to me and he didn’t initiate any contact.” However, Gill seems set on representing the Liberal Par ty in Abbotsford-South as soon as it’s possible. A city councillor for 15 years, Gill had previously said he wouldn’t make the jump into provincial politics, but had a change of heart after increased support from members of the community over the past year. “What made me do it was many of my supporters had been coming to me . . . for almost over a year now, saying I should give it a shot,” said Gill. “I had been saying no at this time, but finally they said ‘we would like to show you how much support you have.’” Gill finally decided to make his intentions clear following a meeting on May 8, in which a ‘number of key players’ proclaimed they would back him for nomination.

THE ROAD RULES
In a May 26, 2011 news release, the IIHS reported its latest crash test results for new fuel-efficient ‘small cars’ including hybrids and gasoline-only models. And unlike the results when this class was first tested in the late 90’s, “none… earned a poor rating in any evaluation.” Indeed, said David Zuby, the Institute's chief research officer, "At a time of high gasoline prices, consumers have never had a bigger selection of small cars that earn Top Safety Pick."
Winners were the 2012 Ford Focus and Honda Civic, and the 2011 Hyundai Elantra, Lexus CT 200h hybrid, Nissan Juke, and Toyota Prius hybrid. The Civic, CT 200h, Elantra, Focus, and Prius have at least one version with a government fuel economy rating of at least 40 mpg [17.01 kpl] on the highway.
In 1997, when the IIHS first put small cars through its 40 mph (64 kph) frontal offset test, none of the 11 small cars earned a ‘good’ and 3 were ‘poor’. In 2005, the side test results were no more encouraging — none were ‘good’, and 14 of the 16 models were ‘poor’. Despite this commendable trend—“more safety in smaller packages”— Mr. Zuby points out, however, “the laws of physics always are in effect for cars,” which means that small, lightweight cars "don't protect their occupants as well as bigger, heavier ones. …That's why it's important that the crashworthiness designs of smaller cars be as good as possible. The new ratings demonstrate that small cars are certainly much safer than they used to be." Cedric Hughes L.L.B. Leslie McGuffin L.L.B. www.roadrules.ca

es indeed, there are Vikings among us. And you can meet them on Saturday, June 11 when they descend on Trethewey House for the 7th annual Optimist Family Fun Fair. Come meet the Norsemen and their women of Reik Felag, a society of the Scandinavian Iron Age, who will bring their swords, armour, spinning and weaving, storytelling, arts and crafts, music and more as they mingle amongst the commoners. “This is a totally different concept,” said Christina Reid, collections manager with MSA Museum, of this year’s fun fair. “We’re changing from a museum to a discovery centre. We’re no longer putting things behind glass. You put your hands on it, you do it, you try,” she said. That will include having a hand at sword fighting and wearing the armour, trying out musical instruments from the seventh century, playing a version of Viking lawn bowling, and more. There will also be storytelling, wood and bone carving, other crafts and spice booths. Reid, an archeologist specializing in the Scandinavian Iron Age, is excited to give visitors a taste of what it was like to live during that time, 200 A.D. to 1100 A.D., when her ancestors first discovered metal and started making

Robinson had been charged with second-degree murder, but Justice Brian Joyce ruled that recent crack cocaine use and inconsistent use of anxiety medication combined to render the Abbotsford man unable to form the intent required for a murder conviction. After the manslaughter conviction, Crown counsel sought to have Robinson termed as a dangerous offender, a designation that carries with it an indefinite prison term. member, the 1992 attempted robbery of his landlady, the 2000 assault of his then-wife, uttering threats to his thenwife in 2001, and another assault in 2005. Defence counsel conceded that while Robinson met the criteria to be designated a dangerous offender, the the danger he posed to the community could be substantially reduced and thus Robinson should instead be termed a “long-term offender.” Canadian case law dictates that when a criminal meets both the dangerous offender and long-term offender criteria, that a long-term offender order should be imposed. With that ruling, it fell to Joyce to impose a jail sentence. Crown counsel asked for a sentence of 10 to 12 years, while defence asked for a sentence of eight to 10 years. Joyce sided with the Crown, sentencing Robinson to 12 years in jail. However, because Robinson’s crime was convicted in 2007, when sentencing guidelines encouraged judges to give two-for-one credit for time served before sentencing, Robinson will spend four more years in jail.

man and woman, both in their 50s and from the Chilliwack area, were killed yesterday when their vehicle missed a turn on Highway 1 and crashed into the Vedder Canal around 4:30 a.m. Two police officers arrived at the scene within moments and, wearing personal flotation devices, tried to rescue the occupants of the vehicle. Their efforts failed and the officers had to be treated for hypothermia. Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash. This tragedy follows a crash Saturday night, when a 32-year-old Abbotsford man died on Highway 1 near Langley. Jeremy Pinette, 32, died after the green Dodge Viper he was driving hit a ditch at about 160 kilometres per hour, rolled and pinned him inside. Pinette was driving west along Highway 1 around 10 p.m. Pinette had a long list of driving infractions, and was a known associate of the Hells Angels. – POSTMEDIA NETWORK

A fan’s view . . . from inside the ropes I
t’s difficult to comprehend just what the Vancouver Canucks have accomplished this season, and now that the hallowed prize, the Stanley Cup, is within reach, excitement in these parts feels like it’s breaking the sound barrier. Having spent the last two months rubbing shoulders with some of North America’s finest sports reporters while covering the NHL playoffs for a cocktail of U.S. papers, it’s amazing just how the world of professional sports has changed over the years. The excitement is palpable. The Canucks have a chance to make history by winning the franchise’s first Stanley Cup in its 40-year history. That’s a scary thought, although not quite as frustrating as the Toronto Maple Leafs, who last won a championship in 1967. Driving this bus of momentum are the Canucks themselves. Love them or hate them, and a large sum of people outside the Lower Mainland, Abbotsford and B.C. truly detest this group, the Canucks have written one captivating script this spring. And that’s when the sports writers are at their finest. It seems not one inch of these games is untouched. The slightest play, which one observer may think has no influence on the final score, is questioned into the ground.

Inside Sports It’s truly a wonder. It’s crazy and stressful at times, but a wonder nonetheless. And the role of social media has taken all the media hype and fast-forwarded it right to your computer screen within seconds of the final horn. People, believe it or not, lap it up. As you’ve seen at the Times’ website, www.abbotsfordtimes. com, fans have been sending photos of themselves decked out in Canucks colours that we have posted to the site for all to see. There’s even a Twitter battle going on between a group of women in Vancouver and Boston over who has the best . . . well, let’s just say the Ben Eager flasher kick-started this jousting match. As a writer, it’s exciting. But it’s interesting the perils of this job. One of them is trying to maintain a level head at times. Objectivity can sometimes be thrown to the wind – there’s a fervour between some members of the Boston and Vancouver media as we speak.
I must admit that as a child growing up, and even into my earlier 20s, I was a Canucks fan through and through. I was seven years old when the Canucks last made it to the Stanley Cup final in 1994. I was about as tall as I am now, which is to say I’m not tall at all, had a mullet and wasn’t allowed to stay up past 8:30 p.m. The fan in me has since been coiled. Making deadlines, covering the scoop, and getting lost in media scrums is the life now. But much like when Canada won gold in men’s hockey at the Olympics, it’s not hard to get enthused about what the Canucks are doing, and more importantly how this great sport is being played out. The Stanley Cup has long since been hailed as the hardest trophy in professional sports to win, and with darn good reason. The Canucks have written 40 chapters full of angst, dreadfulness, shallow promise and heartbreak. They’re on the verge of scripting a euphoric passage, and you know what? It’s exciting. ■ Cam Tucker is a freelance reporter
and columnist with the AbbotsfordMission Times, and has covered the Canucks playoff run for newspapers in Chicago, San Jose, and Boston. Contact him at camtuckertimes@ gmail.com.
he stereotypical images we have of Canada’s Parliament are of a group composed mostly of men, with the old far outnumbering the young. But the stories in the past week have all been about the young, in a Parliament in which the average age of MPs dropped significantly as a result of last month’s election. The senior-dominated Senate was disrupted briefly by Brigette DePape, a 21year-old student and page who raised a “Stop Harper” sign in an act of protest that got her fired. Less headline-grabbing but no less important was the election of the new Speaker, Conservative MP Andrew Scheer, at 32 the youngest in Canadian history. Then there’s Pierre-Luc Dusseault, the 19-year-old NDP MP who had to give up his summer job at a golf club when he unexpectedly became the youngest person ever elected to Canada’s Parliament. Those three might not have much in common aside from their age. They are, respectively, a protester, a member of the ruling government, and a member of the opposition. But they are all well under 40 years of age. On some issues, Canadians can be divided by their party affiliation, by their religion, by the region where they grew up, or by their first language. But there are other issues that split us by age. Younger people are likely to have different opinions on the environment and on social issues than their elders. They also see and interact with the world in different ways. Young people, especially those still in their teens and 20s, grew up in an era defined by prosperity and boom times and now find themselves living in a much more uncertain world. They have been defined by wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, not Vietnam or Korea – or the Second World War. How this new cohort will shape Canada will be seen, perhaps for the first time, in this new Parliament.

We owe the Canucks this at the very least Editor, the Times:
It is admirable that the AESC has opened to Canucks fans during the Stanley Cup final, and while the intentions of one writer (Janet Trout, Times, June 7) are noble to suggests donations to the food bank, I would add a far more reaching and beneficial opportunity for all here in Abbotsford and the Valley would have been to follow the lead of Rogers Arena. A modest admission charge with all proceeds going directly to Canucks for Kids and Canuck Place. With Canuck Place about to shine upon the landscape of Abbotsford, what better way to express our appreciation and say thanks to the Vancouver Canucks? Rob Ironside Abbotsford
Not painting a pretty picture about costs Editor, the Times:
I am writing to ask if I am the only person in Mission who wonders why the city spent all that money painting bikes on the streets? And the signs, how much did they cost? Many of the roads are in need of paving and would need to be repainted soon. In addition, Mission is basically a mountain making cycling difficult for the average person. I realize there are cyclists in Mission but to me this was really a waste of money. Debbie Driediger Mission
Smart meters aren’t a bright idea Editor, the Times:
BC Hydro has been hitting the hustings lately with the
message that its wireless smart meter program will save us money – it won’t. And that we need it – we don’t. Where the utility company introduced it in California, the residential rates went up by as much as 300 per cent. In Ontario, they’ve gone up by an average of 80 per cent. Everywhere the wireless smart meter has been introduced, rates have increased. Even Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty admits that their billion dollar program isn’t saving money. And why is that? Because that clever smart meter figured out that shifting major utility use to overnight when the rates are lower will save money. Imagine that. Who would have guessed? But Ontario residents decided that such a shift in pattern is disruptive, inconvenient, and, since day and night rate are practically identical, without sufficient incentive. There are many reasons for B.C. residents to oppose our own disaster-in-waiting. Cost is only one. The smart meter communicates through wireless technology and is easy to hack into. Further, it emits harmful electromagnetic radiation in spurts that some electrical engineers report ranges in frequency between 4,000 hz to 60,000 hz. And this every 30 seconds, 2880 times a day. Many that have the meters are complaining of headaches and sleep disturbance. Added to the plethora of wireless devices that are now assaulting our systems every moment we live and for every breathe we take, our health costs are going to skyrocket. All in all, BC Hydro’s wireless smart meter program is an

expensive and nasty piece of work. One billion dollars is their estimate cost to radiate us with microwave in our home. We deserve far better representation from our politicians than this. Better they spend the billion dollars to reduce our power bill. Robert Riedlinger Mission
We need control over our own water Editor, the Times:
Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Abbotsford council have a public meeting in early April where residents voiced their opposition to P3 Water and didn’t Mission have a similar meeting? What is it that Mayor Peary and company doesn’t understand about no we don’t want P3 water? Mission council understood but Peary on CKNW said that he will not allow Mission to deny his city access to the potential of federal funding. But why is the Stephen Harper government’s tempting carrot of $65 million public money attached to a P3 deal? Could council be under some pressure from MP Ed Fast, as the Harper government is very pro P3, and pro corporation. The New York Times had an online debate about whether privatization is bad for U.S. cities and states, and discovered that there was poor service quality, lack of cost savings and
problems with monitoring. I also read that similar findings are reported in studies from around the world. New York City’s administration is bringing once privatized work back in house to save money; can our local council learn from that? Please Abbotsford council, keep control of our water and be careful of whatever else you may think is a good idea to privatize because privatization means that we all lose control. Gary Huntbatch Abbotsford
At least Mission’s council listens Editor, the Times:
When Mission’s mayor and council failed to kowtow to Abbotsford’s mayor and council by leaping to obey their commands and demands on the matter of the P3 water proposal, Abbotsford’s mayor was all over the media belittling, heaping scorn on and verbally abusing Mission’s mayor and council. He threatened to go the P3 route alone and then charge Mission a premium for water. Apparently someone pointed out the obvious to Mayor Peary; if Abbotsford wanted to go it alone it would need Mission to grant it right-of-way for the pipeline. So Abbotsford sent a request to Mission asking them to grant a right of way.
Unsurprising that Mission didn’t leap to attention, salute and grant Abbotsford their right-of-way. What Mission did was table the matter without saying yes or no, leaving Abbotsford in the wind. And while this behaviour from Abbotsford’s mayor and council is depressing, it is not nearly as depressing or frightening as wondering how long it will be before mayor and council start talking of a better plan that involves going around Mission. After all, the money to pay for water is coming out of city taxpayer’s pockets and mayor and council have repeatedly demonstrated their commitment to maximizing taxpayer dollars spent in reckless abandon. This is the council that, against all common sense, bulled ahead to build that money consuming black hole, the AESC, and ignored the fact it was illegal and put taxpayers on the hook for a decade for up to $5.7 million a year. Hopefully, despite the best efforts of Abbotsford’s current crop of politicians to engage in another expensive financial debacle, they will find themselves thwarted by a Mission council that had the audacity to listen to the opinions of the people who pay the bills. James Breckenridge Abbotsford
Reader would rather be gardening Editor, the Times:
My plan was to spend the coming summer working in my backyard. But with the Harper majority win, a wheelbarrow full of material has fall-
en onto my compost heap and needs to be dealt with. Gardening is for pleasure but not giving Harper an inch is the duty of everyone who didn’t fall for his evangelical based CONservative message. Harper’s performance at the G8 meeting in Europe only served to highlight his presumed God-given arrogance. His lecturing the Greek prime minister on democracy was as embarrassing an event as I could imagine. That was also a warning to us to fall in line just in case you didn’t notice it. I only wish we weren’t such wimps here as direct action such as is being staged on the streets of Athens would prove more effective in blunting the worst excesses of Harper’s future plans for us. Certainly more effective than letters to the editor, apparently. In case you miss the point, we’re all parasites to the Neo-Cons, so don’t flatter yourself in thinking that you are anything more than that to them. In short, Harper’s appearance at the G8 only confirms the low opinion I already had of him and his supporters. Submit to your betters and forget that in a democracy majority rules. Not a chance. So I ask you, how can I not make time for Harper bashing even though the garden beckons? I suspect my lap top will be seeing a lot of the backyard this summer as I’ll need to keep it handy. And don’t worry, evangelicals, I’ll always make time to show you the errors of your ways. Robert T. Rock Mission

Local Roadshow Expert Examines Some Gold Jewellery
After many very successful shows around the Lower Mainland, The Roadshow is now here here in inAbbotsford, Langley, BC. So you had better search through your attics and garages, go through your lock boxes and jewellery, because you may be sitting on a small fortune and not even know it! Roadshow experts are here to examine all your antiques, collectibles, gold and silver.
jewellery she was never going to wear anyways. Expert Elijah Gold explains, “We have noticed a substantial increase in the amount of precious metals such as gold and silver coming to the Roadshow, which makes sense considering how high it’s currently trading at. He added, “The Roadshow is great because it puts money in people’s pockets, especially during such hard times. Lots of items that are just sitting around collecting dust in basements and jewellery boxes can be exchanged for money, on the spot!”
During a show near Toronto, a woman came in with a jewellery box that she had just inherited from her late aunt. “I don’t wear jewellery,” explained Barbara Engles, “so it was an easy decision to come down to the Roadshow to sell it”. She was very excited when she was able to walk away with a cheque for over $2,100 for
At another Roadshow event, a woman, named Mira Kovalchek, walked in with a tin full of hundreds of old coins that were given to her as a young child by her grandfather. She finally decided to come in to the Roadshow and see what he had given her. She was ecstatic to learn she had coins dating back to the late 1800’s, some of which were extremely rare.
Roadshow consultant Perry Bruce explains “We had uncovered an 1871 Queen Victoria 50 Cent piece, valued at over $2,000!! She had a nice assortment of coins that were not rare dates, but she was able to sell them for their silver content”. She explains, “I never would have thought that my old tin of coins was worth so much! I can finally afford

to renovate my kitchen”. Perry Bruce continued, “Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value”.
Experts at the Roadshow will evaluate and examine your items, FREE OF CHARGE, as well as educate you on them. The Roadshow sees hundreds of people during a one week event, and they have been travelling across Canada to different cities and towns, searching for your forgotten treasures. Trains, dolls, toys, old advertising signs, pocket watches, porcelain and bisque dolls, pretty much everything can be sold at the Roadshow. Any early edition Barbie’s are sought after by the Roadshow collectors, as well as a variety of Dinky Toys and Matchbox cars. Lionel Trains and a
variety of tin toys can also fetch a price, especially if they are in their original box or in mint condition. If a collector is looking for one of your collectibles, they often make offers to buy them. A man brought in a 1950’s Marx Tin Toy Robot, in fairly good condition, still in its original box. We were able to locate a collector for that specific toy within minutes, and that gentleman went home with over $700 for his Toy Robot and a few other small toys. So whether you have an old toy car, a broken gold chain, or a Barbie sitting in the closet, bring it down to the Roadshow, we will take a look at it for FREE and it could put money in your pocket!
See you at the Roadshow!

ARTHRITIS
Pain free in 2 weeks!
This is what happened to me personally. After suffering for years I desperately tried everything, drugs, natural products, physiotherapy, acupuncture, magnets and nothing was of any real help. Finally I had relief in 2 weeks by taking shark cartilage that was specially processed to preserve the natural active ingredients. This is the kind we are now promoting. I realized then that there are over 50 million men and women that are battling the same illness and getting treatments that are not working well, otherwise we would not have this ongoing huge health problem. In the last 10 years we have helped tens of thousands of men and women to have less pain or no pain at all. This is a by-product of the food industry. No sharks are caught because of their bones/cartilage. Don’t let anybody #1 confuse you. Nick A. Jerch, President We have real EVIDENCE that it works. On our web site you find over 100’s of testimonials with full names and towns. All 100% true. Skeptics may call them. Here are some examples: ! Doctor suggested knee replacement after all his options failed with drugs and cortisone shots in knee and lower back. I recommend Bell Shark Cartilage to those millions suffering needlessly like I did for 40 years with arthritis in my knees. It's a shame that I was given drugs and injections all these years when a natural medicine could have spared me the endless torture day and night. Pat Laughlin, Coldwater, ON !My hip is 95% pain free. Pain killing drugs mask and Bell Shark Cartilage heals. Rebecca Hite, Oroville, CA!I tried another brand and pain came back. 2 weeks on Bell and pain is gone again. Gert Dupuis, Hanmer, ON!Cancelled knee replacement. I was in pain and limping. Have no more pain now. Can square dance for hours. Anton Melnychuk, Porcupine Plain, SK. We supply EVIDENCE!

A12 ❘ FAITH ❘ THURSDAY, JUNE 9, 2011 THE TIMES
It’s good to (Christian) rock out sometimes T
he top 25 most played songs on my iPod are all songs that, I’m quite certain, my wife hates. Artists in this collection of misfits and vagabonds probably smell like liquor from time to time, would choose a house in East Van over West Van, and their fan base could care less about Lady Gaga, Kenny Chesney, or your favourite soft rock radio station. It’s fast, hard-hitting rock and roll – tattoos and all. Missing from my collection of top played songs and albums is church music. I don’t really have angst or feud with church music, it just doesn’t get played as often. And here’s why; I don’t really like the genre and style of a lot of wor-
ship music. That’s not to say I dislike it, country infused three-chord soft rock just isn’t my style. Music and worship has been an ongoing debate in church circles for a long time. In fact, the debates have often moved to sparring and outright division as people from all sides pick up ammunition and enter the battle field of worship wars. Unfortunately, much of what has been called ‘the worship wars’ are actually culture and style wars (i.e. methods of how we worship). For example, a hip young indierocker may walk into a church and be totally annoyed by a creaking organ. The slow rambling 16th century hymn doesn’t fit his style and so concludes, “I am

Faith that matters unable to worship.” Or, take for example, a kind grandmotherly type who loves Jesus and the Gaither Gospel Hour but can’t stand the searing sounds of an electric guitar playing the Christian Top 40 and, likewise, concludes that she cannot worship based on the style of music. The problem with this is that the question of why we worship is often answered by how we wor-
ship. “I worship because the band is my style and culturally relevant to me.” Really being said in statements like this is, “I don’t worship God because he is good, I worship God because the music is good.” In fact, what is being worshipped is the music. Music in the church should definitely be well done and fit the cultural context of the local church. However, the style and genre of music, the culture that it represents, and whether it’s skilled or not doesn’t change why Christians worship. Worship is our response to what God has done, is doing, and is going to do. This means that when God does something or shows us some part of his character, we respond appropri-

ately. A byproduct of knowing why we worship is that there comes an incredible freedom and joy to worship regardless of what one thinks or feels about the music. While I don’t expect that my favourite style of music will ever be played on a Sunday morning, I am free to whole-heartedly join with my church in praise and worship of Jesus, my King and Saviour. Why I worship always trumps how I worship. I hope it does for you too. ■ Jeremy Postal pastors twenty-

There’s esthetic appeal in a balcony that has containers filled with growing vegetables.
Growing great veggies up on your balcony
Q
: As a condo gardener, I am hoping you can help me with a question I have about growing vegetables. I was recently reading an article about growing things like radishes and even beets in very shallow containers. Have you heard of this, and will it work? It would be great to be able to grow some of my vegetables in containers that can be easily moved around when I need the space for entertaining. I also wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your new book and loved the fact that you devoted a chapter to us container gardeners.
A
: You most certainly can grow things like radishes, green onions, beets and other shallowrooted vegetables in shallow containers like old cake pans. The container should be around 15 to 20 centimetres deep and should have adequate drainage. If you are recycling containers such as cake pans, you will have to drill a few holes in the bottom to allow the water to drain away. The great thing about recycling containers is of course it is an eco-friendly thing to do plus you can easily move the containers around. If you have a balcony where the sun disappears only to reappear in another exposure later in the day, you can move the container to follow the sun. I think a pan of green onions or radishes has

an esthetic appeal when placed on a patio table in an outdoor setting. I can hear that snickering out there. Yes, I really do think that vegetables look cool. An old cake pan that has been painted a bright colour with a bunch of green onions growing in it makes a great centrepiece, I’ll have you know. Those of you who have been regular followers of my columns will remember my talking about growing potatoes on balconies or decks in potato bins that you can buy from the local greenhouse or garden centre. I recently read a great idea about growing potatoes in a garbage bag. You take an ordinary, heavy-duty garbage bag and add about 10 centimetres of potting soil to the bottom. You then plant your seed potatoes on top of the soil and add enough soil to just cover the potatoes. Roll the bag down to within five cm of the top of the soil. Once the potatoes sprout and are about 10 cm high, add more soil. Add enough soil so that only the very tip of the shoot is visible. Roll the bag up to accommodate the added soil. Keep doing this as the sprouts grow until you reach the top of the bag. Then stop adding soil and let the shoots mature. Water the bag regularly and make sure you punch a few holes in the bottom to allow for drainage.

At Home In the kitchen: being
proud of your tastes
T
here are people who feel that their food preferences or knowledge may not reflect what is correct or up-todate in the culinary world. This is completely understandable as there is always an endless supply of information and techniques. This does not commensurate however that one should be ashamed, or be denied of the right, to express their passion for this necessity in our lives. One of the many things that I love about food and food preparation is that I never stop learning. One can never know everything in this industry and I consider it to be one of “the arts” like music or painting. Never can every musical note and lyric, colour and design, or food flavour combination be “used up”. It is literally impossible. No matter how much or little you know, chances are you have preferences in your appreciation of this medium that is both an essential and an indulgent part of our lives. This individuality not only guides you to determine likes or dislikes, but defines you as who you are. Carving a baron of beef in a buffet lineup at a hotel many years ago, I was approached by an elderly woman with an empty plate. As always, I asked the level of doneness preferred. Looking nervous, she whispered, “I know it’s not the right way, but I prefer an extra well-done piece”. So I asked her “what do you enjoy?” and she repeated “extra well-done” with a sense of bewilderment. “If that’s what you enjoy,” I stated to her “how is that the wrong way?” Many people lose sight of this and in the meantime get blackballed by a definition governed by the culinary world. The “textbook” doneness for red meat is medium-rare for optimal flavour, juiciness and tenderness. This is merely a guideline however, and not meant to overrule one’s preferences. If you don’t enjoy red meat medium-rare, then it is not the right way for you.
As long as one seizes opportunities to try new foods and preparation techniques, then there CHEF should be nothing wrong DEZ with their final individual evaluation. On The culinary world is cooking full of guidelines, but the sooner people realize that these “guidelines” are not necessarily “laws”, the better off everyone will be.

What if your mortgage helped fund what’s around the corner?
Dear Chef Dez: Recently I went to a restaurant and ordered a well-done steak. The server advised me that the chef in the kitchen refused to cook my steak of choice to that degree of doneness. What is your opinion on this? Peter F. Langley Dear Peter: Depending on the cut of steak, most restaurants will fulfill your request. Some however feel that for a top grade cut of beef, cooking it well-done is a waste. It just dries out the optimal flavour and tenderness that a choice cut is expected to offer the consumer. I think the situation should have been handled differently. You should have been advised that the kitchen doesn’t recommend “well-done” for the selection of steak you made, and offer you a different cut. If at this point you still insisted on your original choice, then your request should have been honoured. I feel as professionals it is our obligation to educate people on the culinary guidelines that we are trained in and to make appropriate suggestions. If, however, the consumer still chooses otherwise, their wish should be respected and their individuality recognized. Send your food/cooking questions to dez@ chefdez.com or P.O. You may be required to pay additional fees, which would increase your APR. Rates subject to change without notice. Terms and conditions apply. See staff for details. ATLANTA FLOORING
Here come the ants
W
ith spring finally here, this would be a good time to talk about ants. It is going to be another bad season for them even though we have a lot water around. It is important for gardeners and homeowners alike to get to the ants early. Going after this problem early means you will be preventing the ants from foraging and bringing food back to the nest, and in turn feeding the queen and giving her the ability to lay eggs. The sooner you do an application of Doktor Doom Residual to eliminate this problem, the better.
The benefit of this early application is that you will need fewer applications throughout the rest of the season. If you observe ants “farming” aphid larvae in Manitoba maple trees or on any other trees, spray a line of Doktor Doom Residual around the limbs and tree trunk. This application will get the ants coming and going and does exactly what an application around your paving stones and existing ant hills will do – namely, preventing the queen from getting food and thus laying fewer eggs. – POSTMEDIA NETWORK

THE TIMES THURSDAY, JUNE 9, 2011
Bikes are back, and big announcement is around the corner Cyclers see celebrations
T
he high-energy, four-day, 200-kilometre Cycling for Diversity Tour is history, and all 10 team members are safely home. Our message for the nine-city journey focused on building an inclusive community, and we believe we were successful in inspiring others to break the barriers that exist. Certainly the civic officials we met in each major city were impressed with the message. Meaningful partnerships were developed along the way, and Korean drummers, Const. Mary Boonstra’s flash mob, Bhangara dancers, assemblies of colourful flag-waving students and a huge segment of the community attended our opening celebration hosted outside Canada Safeway. Actually, things turned out better than I expected. Having only started our preparations in March, we pulled off some strategic miracles to make this trip a huge success, one this community won’t soon forget. With 24 planned stops, including eight schools, several cultural centres, temples, community services centres, major malls and city halls, we arrived at every destination on time. If there’s anything I appreciate more than ever now, it’s bike lanes. Cycling is a wonderful way to travel and stay healthy, and it’s encouraging to see designated routes. One stop that stands out was on this trip was at Mission Indian Friendship Centre, where we were spiritually heralded with a bandana and drum ceremony to wish us the best of luck. Our gift to our hosts at most stops was our trademark diversity T-shirt. We launched the trek at Griner Park in Mission with five cyclists (Sukhi Dhami, Alex Mitchell, Abbotsford Coun. Bill MacGregor, Abbotsford Deputy Police Chief Rick Lucy and myself ) where we planted a tree with a crowd of local dignitaries. With us was team driver Rick Rake, who documented the entire trip on social media. To view trip photos,

On the edge search “Cycling for Diversity 2011” on Facebook. I thought the tree-planting would be a fabulous idea to kick-start our journey to Victoria because diversity is similar to a growing tree. We need to nurture and protect diversity like we would a tree. With layovers in Langley, Burnaby and Tsawwassen, we celebrated World Day for Cultural Diversity on May 21 with acting Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto on the steps of the historic BC Legislature. We even met noted musician and composer David Foster there. With our success, an army of people have come forward to participate in Cycle 2012. I’ve not made any official plans for next year, but I’m 99.9 per cent sure we’ll hit the pavement again. I would have liked to have spent more time in all of the great Lower Mainland celebrations for us along the way. The reason for this ride’s success were the people who stepped up when I asked for assistance. I cannot highlight this point enough. People and organizations put tremendous faith in this ride and trusted me to make this work. The message of diversity is only as good as those who work in tandem with us. I would like to express my appreciation to Deesh Photography, Quadra Homes, Dwayne De Souza, Susan Archer, Randy Kailey, Andy Sidhu, Khalsa Diwan Society, Fraser Valley Indo-Canadian Business Association, VanCity (Mission branch), Canada Safeway, Envision Financial (Mission branch), Mission (Sunrise) Rotary Club and Wenting Cycle & Mountain Shop for their undying support. An announcement will be held June 17 at 11 a.m. at MLA Mike de Jong’s office in regards to this year’s Cycling for Diversity ride. ■ Ken Herar is a columnist with

Making that perfect match T
h e madcap comedyadventure-romance, The Matchmaker, by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, Thornton Wilder, has all the fixings for an entertaining night of live theatre, when it opens Friday on the Gallery 7 stage in Abbotsford. “The Matchmaker is a farce with real heart. The characters, and the adventures they embark on, are great fun,” says Gallery 7 artistic director, Ken Hildebrandt. “I think this production will be an outstanding way to celebrate the arrival of summer.” Horace Vandergelder, a shrewd and wealthy merchant, has decided to get married. Securing the services of a matchmaker, he entrusts his shop to his clerks while he heads to New York City in search of love. Tired of their mundane lives and longing for romance, the clerks close up shop and embark on their own adventure to the city. Things really get complicated when they nearly run head-long into their blustery boss. A series of hilarious episodes of hide-and-seek ensue in this farcical adventure that inspired the smash-hit Broadway musical, Hello Dolly. “The very first play I ever recall seeing was a high-school production of The Matchmaker,” recalls Hildebrandt. “I was so intrigued by how the actors could make people respond with laughter. In celebrating 20 years of theatre at Gallery 7, I thought it’d be fun to include the play that was a personal inspiration for getting involved in theatre. Who knows? Maybe it’ll inspire a new generation of actors

Abbotsford athletes place well at 2011 B.C. high school track championships aybe it was only a matter of time, and maybe she doesn’t know this yet, but Natasha Miller’s B.C. high school track and field record for girls triple jump was broken – by a large margin – over the weekend. The previous record, which Miller set in 2005 with a jump of 11.37 metres, fell over the weekend, and one of those who set the new one is Abbotsford Grade 12 student Aisha Klippenstein of ASIA Sumas Mountain.

abbotsfordtimes.com Klippenstein, who came close to the record in her gold-medal winning triple jump at the Fraser Valley Championships three weeks ago, fell short on her first attempt, then leaped 11.52 metres in her second jump to capture the record. Despite the accomplishment, Klippenstein finished second in the provincial competition to Ayla Alehurst of Carihi Secondary School in Campbell River, who won the event after posting jumps of 11.7 metres and 11.68 metres respectively. Klippenstein also took home third place in the girls 100-metre hurdles event. Her time of 14.89 in the finals was a shade over twotenths of a second faster than her qualifying time. after another fourth place finish. Perhaps overshadowed by the historic firstplace performance of Nakai Luyken in the boys 100-metre sprint, the Yale Lions’ girls 4x100-metre relay team came out of nowhere to earn third

bbotsford golfer Adam Hadwin will be packing his bags for the 2011 U.S. Open, which gets underway June 16 at the Congressional Golf Club in Bethesda, Md. Hadwin punched his ticket to golf ’s second major championship of the season after carding a five-under par 139 at a 36hole sectional qualifying event on Monday at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. He is one of only three Canadians to qualify for the tournament, bumping notable Canucks Mike Weir, 2003 Masters champ, and Stephen Ames. “It feels pretty good,” Hadwin said Wednesday on the drive back from Kamloops. “I really don’t know how to describe it. It’s a great tournament because it allows anybody to get in. I just went out there on Monday and did my thing. “I’m sure it all won’t soak in until I get there.” Time and time again, the U.S. Open has proven to be a test of survival for some of the world’s best golfers. It has made the cream of the crop look awfully silly throughout its history, but Hadwin said he’ll try not to let that bother him. “I don’t really have any expectations,” he said. “I just want to try and have fun and enjoy my time.”

he Abbotsford Angels baseball association held an All-Star game for players in the Mosquito level, which includes players between the ages of nine and 11. Twenty-six of the best baseball players in that age range were divided into two teams – the American League and the National League. In the end, the National League came out victorious with a 4-1 win, but the score hardly mattered. “It was a great day of baseball,” said Bobby Braich, commissioner of the Mosquito division. The event, albeit a fun one, was also meant to show the City of Abbotsford just what kind of baseball talent is living right here in town. While Abbotsford is known for producing talented ball players at both the professional
and collegiate level, the city itself doesn’t hold enough resources to promote the game at a higher standard, said Braich. “Not withstanding mediocre equipment, Abbotsford has produced some great ball players,” he said. “There are no formal batting cages in the city. We are under the gun to keep proper facilities.” Baseball facilities in Abbotsford need to be upgraded, he said, comparing local resources to communities like Chilliwack, Aldergrove and Langley. Last week, the City of Abbotsford announced a plan to build a sports complex behind the UFV campus. Braich said the Angels organization would like to be considered a front-runner to be able to use the planned facility, should the city go through with construction. The Angels organization acts as a feeder system for the Abbotsford Cardinals.

LEENDET, Buskop October 4, 1930 - June 5, 2011 Leendert Buskop passed away peacefully on June 5, 2011 with his family by his side after a long battle with prostate cancer. Len will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 56 years Dora Buskop and his children Jeanette Doodson (Pat), John Buskop (Suzyn), Ann Philps (Henry), Yvonne Joudrey (John), and Christina McNabb (Jim). He will also be deeply missed by his ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Len was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Len and his wife immigrated to Canada in 1964 from Holland with four of their children. After trying many different jobs when first in Canada, Len settled on becoming a Corrections officer for Correction’s Canada, he retired from that in 1995. Our family would like to give a very special thanks to Dr. Brown and all the nurses and medical staff on the Tertiary Hospice Palliative Care Unit at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. As your life went on you flourished like a tower you burst with happiness just like a blooming flower. Loved ones know you are gone but we know you are watching us dusk till dawn. Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: The accent continues on paperwork, messaging, errands, travel, news and casual friends. It’s a busy but not important time. Sunday’s full of mysteries and subconscious urges (so is good for seeing within or seeking critical advice). But these – and sex, finances – can meet irritation Monday. Wisdom, a gentle outlook creep in late Monday to late Wednesday – you might spend too much on travel, culture, education or a legal matter, but these things also come to a satisfying climax. Be ambitious Thursday/Friday. You’re popular Saturday, but driving, high tech are erratic. Taurus April 20-May 20: Continue to chase money. Buy sources of knowledge and co-operate with teachers. Relationships flow well Sunday, but they might run into friction Monday a.m. Ignore a financial or sexual decision/idea Monday night – these meet success Tuesday/Wednesday (although you might overspend for an investment). Be careful with ethical or legal “assumptions” (or travel ideas) Thursday to suppertime – the practical reality is far different. These matters flow with superb luck, though, Thursday night to pre-dawn Saturday. Be ambitious – but drive carefully, and forgive computers – Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness continue high. You’ll be given almost anything you ask for – but you need to be aware that asking for a partner, marriage, relocation, litigation or a contract could lead to restriction or unexpected solitude. But these are not necessarily bad. Relative solitude will come anyway, over the year ahead, as a blessing, a healing. Do ask for advice. Take this general attitude for the whole 12 months ahead: that you will, to whatever degree you can, sacrifice your own time/energy to support another (or others). This will bring good results.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Lie low, rest and recuperate. Be thoughtful, plan, seek advice, deal with government agencies or institutions, or corporate head offices. Your charitable and spiritual side remains prominent. Next week, you’re going to burst forth with a blaze of energy, so store it up now. Sunday’s romantic, but anyone who’s attractive Monday morning is also a quarrelsome type – fair warning! Tackle chores and health concerns Monday to Wednesday. Relationships can frustrate you Thursday to suppertime (so don’t pursue new ones) but this night and Friday bring sweet, even passionate harmony! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Wishes can come true! You remain popular, optimistic, happy. Make and accept invitations (but keep them near in time – after June 20 you’ll tire of social involvements). The year ahead is very lucky for career, ambitions, etc. Use Sunday to ground this – to examine and/or shore up your foundations, your platform for launching an ambitious bid. For example, when you’re handling long days and career pressures, a supportive family is a good foundation. Or mapping out the right territory, or lining up allies. Tuesday/Wednesday are romantic, creative – love could reach a sweet climax! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The accent remains on ambition, status, prestige relationships. Show the boss (or parents, etc.) what you can do. Sunday’s great for puttering around the neighbourhood, reading a fat newspaper, calling friends, errands and paperwork. These need a diplomatic (but opportunistic) approach Monday a.m. You reach a climax and an “ending note” in career matters Tuesday/Wednesday – all is well. Perhaps a project matures. Study long-term income and investments Thursday: these will undergo change this decade – safety key. Thursday/Friday are romantic. Chores Saturday – practise safety!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Gentle love, understanding, a wide view, far travel, legal affairs, higher education, religion, cultural involvements – the accent continues on these. During the 378 days ahead, you are going to face superb luck in investments, lifestyle changes, sex/intimacy, therapy/healing, and/or research. Use Sunday to see what you already have, and what you accept as true – these are not where your luck lies; these will remain static. Monday morning, a partner’s or competitor’s comment, even if irritating, or a spied opportunity, shows where your luck lies. Romance unpredictable Saturday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Changes are still on the agenda, in lifestyle, commitments, intimacy, finances. But the biggest change involves your relationship sphere: it’s growing splendidly lucky. The year ahead will bring at least two opportunities to marry, form a business partnership, relocate, attract the public (e.g., as clients to your store) – almost all of these have a very beneficial money result! Remember for the past 15 years I kept saying that your true love phase would begin in 2011? This partnership year is part of that. Your energy’s good Sunday. Chase money midweek. Love late Thursday? Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The emphasis remains on relationships, partnerships, opportunities, relocation, negotiation. Remember, this area needs a light touch until late August 2012. Actually marrying or relocating is not a good idea, unless “life brings it” – e.g., your employer transfers you. Depend more on your own efforts, carve out your own destiny, rather than chasing perceived “opportunities.” Lie low, rest Sunday/Monday. Your energy rises nicely midweek. Chase money Thursday/Friday (but expect barriers up to Thursday suppertime). Someone’s sweet, reliable. Travel Saturday – safety first!

June 12 - 18, 2011 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: You face nine more days of drudgery work, so just keep on plugging. (As hinted earlier, perform only necessary work all year; don’t make machinery, chores, health or employment a primary focus.) Soon, fresh air, new opportunities and exciting relationships will enter. The last of these is especially significant, as the 12 months ahead bring splendid romantic openings! The same period creative and speculative luck. Optimistic risk is your friend, especially risk that, if it “wins,” will bring you more responsibility. Joy Sunday. Rest midweek, charge forth Thursday/Friday! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: This is your last week of romance, creativity, pleasure and beauty for awhile – enjoy it while you can. Be ambitious Sunday. Higher-ups are still impatient, temperamental, so be diplomatic, especially Monday morning. Your popularity surges Tuesday/Wednesday! Flirtations, entertainment, optimism abound. A romance could swell to “mad love.” But retreat Thursday/Friday: meditate, contemplate, plan, deal with government agencies, and fulfill obligations. (All these will go better Thursday night and Friday, not before.) Your energy, charisma spring up Saturday – careful driving. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The accent continues on your domestic scene, on security, property, children, retirement, gardening, nature and nutrition. Luxuriate in laziness. Sunday/Monday are wise, gentle – contemplate the why’s, not the how’s. You might feel a tug-o-war between your ambitions and your home (or your tiredness) Tuesday/Wednesday. All’s well, whichever extreme you favour. Your hopes meet barriers Thursday daytime, but this night ad Friday could bring fulfillment, especially to home-related wishes. It’s a splendid time to decorate, landscape. Weariness returns Saturday – rest, plan. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
