his victims, all but two of whom were boys, and had at least five aliases he used to make initial contact with the young people. He would get telephone numbers and call the victims, posing as a police officer. Goddard sometimes offered gifts or highly paid work opportunities to try and convince the teens to meet him. One 15-year-old even ran away from his foster home to stay at Goddard’s apartment, where Goddard made sexual advances. Defence lawyer David Gable argued that his client is a young man entitled to the benefit of the doubt when it comes to his chances at
B.C. Provincial Court judge refused to allow youth and sexual confusion to excuse the behaviour of an Abbotsford man who used the Internet to lure teenagers. Jeffrey Goddard, 21, pleaded guilty last year to invitation to sexual touching, luring a child under 16 using a computer, impersonating a police officer and two breaches of his bail conditions. Judge Suzanne MacGregor s e n t e n c e d G o d d a rd o n Thursday to 20 months less a day in jail followed by three years of probation. Goddard primarily used Facebook to connect with
JEFFREY GODDARD being rehabilitated. He said Goddard’s crimes clearly demonstrate the insecurity and immaturity of a confused young man.
“This is a young man who . . . is a person who has had difficulty coming to terms with his sexuality,” Gable said. “He needs to be counselled as opposed to incarcerated.” MacGregor cut him short. She said that as far society is concerned, it’s inappropriate for Goddard or anyone else to impose their frailties on teenage boys and girls. “These are serious offences,” MacGregor said. MacGregor said Goddard is intelligent and mature in other areas of his life and was able to deliberate and hunt for his victims. “I do not agree with your c h a ra c t e r i z a t i o n o f M r.
Goddard’s actions being as innocent as playing with the computer,” MacGregor told Gable. Gable had asked for a sentence of time served plus 35 days so that a residential placement could be set up for Goddard. MacGregor instead imposed the sentence earlier sought by the Crown. Terms of his probation include: not living with his mother, not using or possessing a device capable of accessing the Internet and not maintaining any social media accounts in his name or anyone else’s. MacGregor said the sentence was necessary to reflect the effect Goddard had on his victims and the community of Abbotsford.

Jay Hamilton believes his beloved Boston Bruins will win the 2011 Stanley Cup. Bruins flag that flies from the rear of his car, the jersey on his back or the giant foam bear paw aren’t exactly subtleties at a time like this. His style seems to be getting under the skin of a few overzealous Canucks fans. “People have fingered me; people yell at me. I had somebody swerve right over from the other lane to stop in front of me to show me their hand gesture,” he said. “I’ve had a bus driver who gave me a thumbs up. People think I should be cheering for the Canucks like everybody else, but there’s no reason why
I shouldn’t cheer for who I want to cheer for.” Fortunately, those petty squabbles aren’t work related. He still gets a hard time from his colleagues, but it’s all in fun and the spirit of competition. “After the loss the other night, I came to work and had a voicemail on my phone and all it was, was the audio from the Canucks goal,” he said. The Canucks and Bruins played Game 3 of the best-of-seven series last night; however scores were not available before the Times’ deadline.

Second murder suspect arrested “Tracking [MacKinnon] was the result of good police work by some very determined officers.”

second man, captured in Nova Scotia, has been charged in connection to the 2008 double murder of a Mission couple. Two charges of first-degree murder were laid against 25-year-old Justin Andrew MacKinnon Thursday in the shooting deaths of Lisa Dudley and Guthrie McKay. MacKinnon was arrested Monday in Sydney, N.S., after homicide investigators tracked him through four provinces during the 32-month murder investigation. Jack Douglas Woodruff, 52, of Surrey is also facing murder charges following his arrest by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) May 12. Mission residents Lisa Cheryl Dudley and her boyfriend Guthrie Jolan McKay were discovered on Sept. 22, 2008 by a neighbour four days after being shot in their Greenwood Drive home. McKay, a father of three, was dead but Dudley was tied to a chair and clinging to life despite gunshot wounds to her neck. She died before she could be airlifted to hospital. The RCMP was criticized for its response to the report of shots fired in the area the night the couple was killed. An officer was dispatched and spent

in connection to a November 2008 conviction of assault and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm in Surrey. He was also convicted of assault in Terrace, B.C. in January 2007. Woodruff has a prior criminal record, but nothing that involves violence. He has pleaded guilty to a number of offences including fraud over $5,000, possession or use of a stolen credit card, possession of stolen property, personification with intent to gain advantage, and false pretense to commit fraud or obtain credit. Criminal records show police also knew Woodruff by the names of Jack Batke, Jason Douglas, Jeffery Douglas, and Jack MacIntyre. Thiessen said the recent arrest and charges were due to hard work by IHIT investigators and cooperation from out of province police agencies. “Tracking [MacKinnon] was the result of good police work by some very determined officers,” he said. “It’s due to effort, the gathering of evidence and some very tedious police work.” MacKinnon was expected to make his first B.C. appearance in Abbotsford provincial court June 6 whileWoodruff is next due in Abbotsford court June 9.

The officer was later disciplined and the RCMP made it mandatory for members to talk directly to 911 callers who report gunshots. IHIT investigators say the couple’s deaths weren’t random, but targeted. However, police won’t disclose whether the murders were gang or drug related. RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said MacKinnon has a criminal history in a number of provinces, and resided in B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan before being located in Nova Scotia. MacKinnon spent six months in jail

violent sex offender on the run from Abbotsford Police is out of cash and likely poses a greater danger to the public. James Douglas Campbell, 60, who violated parole and fled his Abbotsford residence without authorization on May 27, is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant. Const. Ian MacDonald said that investigators know that Campbell, who has a history of victimizing young girls, has emptied his bank accounts. His last transaction was at a convenience store at 12 p.m. on Sunday in Hope. “Our fear is now that he
will be looking to interact with the public more because he’s without resources and dependent on the goodwill of others for food, transportation, and accommodation,” said MacDonald. Investigators also know that Campbell was in Deroche, just east of Mission, last Wednesday using an ATM, said MacDonald. There have been several reported sightings of Campbell since he went missing, even within the community of Abbotsford. “People need to remember that if they see [Campbell], that’s an immediate 911 call.” A diagnosed pedophile, Campbell was serving a 24-

He has more than 60 criminal convictions dating back to 1967, including the sexual assaults of several young girls, aged five to 12, and one seven-year-old girl who was abducted while she was walking to school. Campbell is five-foot-nine, weighs 161 pounds, is balding with grey hair, and has blue eyes and wears glasses. STAVE FALLS / HAYWARD LAKE NOTICES ONE LANE ROAD CLOSURE—DEWDNEY TRUNK ROAD June 13–July 22, 2011 Monday–Friday, 24 hours Stave Falls Spillway Gates Reliability Project and Completion of Gantry Crane Installation The Stave Falls Spillway Gates Reliability Project has begun. The project involves the replacement of the four existing radial spillway gates and the existing radial gate hoists. To operate the gates, BC Hydro installed a new crane in 2010. This crane is required to lift and lower the gates and is moved into position on a rail that is embedded in the roadway. BC Hydro will be replacing these rails starting mid-June, 2011. A one lane closure of Dewdney Trunk Road for six to eight weeks is required to complete this work. Priority access will be given to emergency vehicles and the school bus. Periodic road closures of Dewdney Trunk Road will continue to be required over the next two years to facilitate the replacement of the spillway gates. In general, these will be short-term (10–15 minutes) or single lane closures. To install the new gates, a full road closure of approximately three days will be required four times during the two-year project. Loop Trail will be closed over Blind Slough Dam during construction. BC Hydro will re-open road and pedestrian access over the dam when construction schedules allow (e.g. primarily evenings and weekends).

Vye Road safety at a crossroads A
bbotsford city council has refused to shut down the Vye Road train crossing, despite significant safety concerns, due to a perceived lack of cooperation by B.C. Southern Railway.
First reported @
abbotsfordtimes.com Southern has applied to make temporary closures of the Vye Road rail crossing permanent from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. from Monday to Thursday to address safety issues until the city can construct an elevated bridge at the site. Council rejected the proposal last week, suggesting that despite safety concerns, Southern had done little to provide the city with viable alternatives for vehicle crossings, despite having the power to do so. Eric Samuelson, railway safety manager for B.C. Safety Authority, said the Vy e Ro a d c r o s s i n g w a s one of the most dangerous crossings in the country due to the high train activity and heavy traffic.
– JEAN KONDA-WITTE/TIMES
The Vye Road railway crossing is one of the most dangerous crossings in Canada, says a Southern Railway spokesman. There have been two collisions between cars and trains in the last eight m o n t h s, a n d n u m e ro u s instances of cars “shooting” the tracks in an effort to beat stop signals, the provincial safety spokesman said. Samuelson told council he had the jurisdiction to close the crossing unilaterally. “I don’t want to go that route, but it’s a ser ious issue,” he said. “Somebody from the city of Abbotsford will be seriously hurt if something is
not done.” Coun. Lynne Harris, chair of the city’s traffic safety committee, questioned the usefulness of solving the safety issue at one crossing only to create similar problems at the one remaining rail crossing south on 4th Avenue just west of Sumas Way. If Vye Road is closed, traffic will be forced down to 4th Avenue, which could cause potential havoc with heavy vehicle traffic along Sumas Way to the border crossing.
Coun. John Smith dismissed the notion of closing Vye Road out of hand, citing the city’s long history of fruitless negotiations with Southern to secure a more northerly railway crossing at McConnell Road. “What motive do we have for restricting our citizen’s movements . . . to pacify Southern Rail,” said Smith. “I share the safety concerns, but there is a lack of urgency as evidenced by the rail company. If Southern in good faith agrees to open McConnell, then once it’s open, perhaps we could see about restrictions on Vye Road.” Smith said the city has been wrangling with Southern for over a decade to secure the McConnell Road crossing, and even had to return $100,000 to big box merchants in the adjacent shopping complex for failing to secure the promised crossing. Smith also said proposed closures, if they occurred, should not fall during the rush hour. “Southern has not been cooperating and has been refusing us that [McConnell] crossing. I say Southern has the solution here.”

elta Police are trying to locate an unidentified nurse and Good Samaritan who helped save the life of an Abbotsford toddler earlier this year. An Abbotsford couple was in their vehicle with their three young children driving down 72nd Avenue the afternoon of Feb. 26 when their 18-month-old son began to choke on a candy. The father pulled the car to the curb and he and wife tried to help their son while bystanders called 911. An off-duty Delta police officer, Const. Aaron Hill, observed the activity and stopped to help. Seeing the child was only semi-conscious and struggling to breathe, the officer began trying to resuscitate the boy. A woman emerged from the crowd and identified herself as a nurse. She helped Hill by attempting to clear the child’s airway and performing CPR. Paramedics arrived, took charge of the boy and transported him to Surrey Memorial Hospital. The toddler has fully recovered but may have died had
it not been for the heroics of the Hill and the unknown nurse who assisted him, said Delta Police spokesman, acting Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer. The woman saved the life of this young boy and spared his family from tremendous grief, he said, adding the DPD would like to nominate her for its yearly citizens’ awards as well as pass on her name for corresponding provincial or national honours. “We are interested in contacting and identifying her to commend her for her actions,” said Eisenzimmer, who added many people tend to shrug off heroic behaviour. The DPD knows nothing about the woman and don’t even have a description of what she looks like. “It’s funny we’re supposed to be such great observers,” said Eisenzimmer. “But [Const. Hill] was so focused on helping the child he didn’t pay attention [to the person helping him].” The Abbotsford parents are reluctant to put themselves in the media spotlight, said Eisenzimmer. ◗ Anyone with information on the mystery nurse should call the Delta Police Department at 604-946-4411.

Beat summer heat with movies I
love summer. I know it feels like it isn’t coming at all this year, but the Earth’s orbit is inevitably bringing this hemisphere closer to the sun (which is often hidden behind clouds, but is still there!). The days are getting longer, the nights shorter. My tan is making a valiant attempt at a comeback. More importantly, this is summer movie season. There are a few big blockbusters I’m planning to see in the theatres, sure. I’ve already seen Thor (fun popcorn movie, as goofy and good natured as its main character), and I’ll probably see the new Pirates of the Caribbean sequel (the book it’s very loosely based upon, On Stranger Tides, is my all time favourite magic-and-pirates novel) and maybe Cowboys and Aliens. But this is also the season when I like to sink back on the couch on a warm evening and pop a movie in the DVD player. For the list of movies I might see this summer is rather short, and the movies I won’t see is rather long. I’d rather be dragged across hot coals than watch Michael Bay direct a bunch of robots spewing horrible dialogue. Also, I understand there are Transformers in his new movie. So let me share with you my short DVD list for the summer. If the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie sinks like a

the painful truth leaky galleon, I can always rent a few good pirate movies. Like Captain Blood, one of Errol Flynn’s first big roles. This is a classic swashbuckler, with a big mid-movie duel between Flynn and Basil Rathbone. As far as westerns go, there are plenty of big-sky adventures on the video store shelves. I tend to gravitate towards the ones where white hats and black hats aren’t much in evidence. Anyone who’s seen the classic The Searchers remembers watching John Wayne’s dogged pursuit of his kidnapped niece. The question of whether he’ll kill her or rescue her lingers until the end of the movie. Or, on the funny side, there’s Destry Rides Again, one of Jimmy Stewart’s early westerns. Stewart rides into a typically rough, brutal western town and takes over as sheriff, then proceeds to wander around without a gun, avoiding fights, and carving napkin rings. He spends most of the movie baffling the local thugs, rather than gunning them down.
Some of the best stories being told on film aren’t coming from the movie theatres. They’re coming from television. You can have your big, Hollywood dramas with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. I’ll take another season of Breaking Bad, thank you very much. Breaking Bad is the story of a brilliant chemist who flailed his way through life until he found himself an underpaid high school teacher in New Mexico, working a second job washing cars to pay for his family’s new late-in-life baby. Then he gets the brilliant idea to solve his financial problems in one fell swoop: he’ll just cook up some methamphetamine. Things go about as badly as you might predict. Rather than allow Brian Cranston’s main character to justify himself, the writers continually show that he’s motivated not by his family’s welfare, but by a twisted mixture of pride, stubbornness, and anger. Over the first two seasons, he’s gone from a misguided schlub to a ruthless kingpin in the making. The third season of the show is out on DVD soon. So between pirates, outlaws, and cowboys, I think I’ve got the dog days of summer just about licked. ■ Visit Matthew Claxton’s blog,

he first muted alarm bells began going off this week, as reports of “consumer fatigue” began circulating. Apparently, Canadians are not capable, or perhaps simply not willing, to spend the economy back to the stratospheric heights it reached pre-recession. Spending growth in the first quarter of the year was the lowest since about 1998. Canada’s economy spent much of the recent decade artificially juiced up. Largely due to the U.S. sub-prime housing boom, and the rise of China, money was flowing in from every direction. Asia needed oil, minerals, and lately, lumber. Canada could provide them, prices rose. At the same time, there was a sense that the good times were never going to end. So Canadians spent, and kept spending. And then it all crashed back down to earth. Canada was lucky, relatively speaking. Our recession was not quite as brutal, our housing stock not quite as bubbly as in the United States. But the three-legged stool our economy was built on – Chinese demand, subprime mortgages, and debt – is still wobbly. During those free-spending years, Canadian household debt reached new, shocking levels. The average Canadian owes $112,000. Debt is growing at more than six per cent a year, while wages are growing at about 4 to 4.5 per cent per year. In December, the level of Canadian household debt exceeded the American level. Yet despite these unsustainable numbers, we’ve got commentators worrying that Canadians will stop spending. Canadians will stop spending eventually, no matter what happens. They can either stop now, pay off the credit cards, and work on saving, or they can stop later – when they go bankrupt. Frankly, we’d rather they slowed down a bit now, even if it does give the economy a bit of a shock. ■ To comment on this editorial, e-mail us at letters@abbotsfordtimes.com.

How about Canucks for a cause?
Intolerance still has many faces Editor, the Times:
As I read the differing views expressed in the “gay” debate, I cannot help but think to myself, does not intolerance towards another come in many forms? Is not that intolerance by those who engage in it justified in so many ways? If one feels their intolerance is justified, does that give them the moral right to view another as inferior to themselves? Do we not want to rise above our intolerances and move beyond those polarizing views that create so much contempt towards one another? Stanley Thompson Abbotsford
Should be nicer to PM Stephen Harper Editor, the Times:
Mr. Groeneveld, you use language of very harsh and intense opprobrium to characterize our Canadian prime minister, Stephen Harper (Times, May 26). I quote you: “Stephen Harper wasted no time in proving himself a two-faced, mealy mouthed jerk with absolutely no respect for his office or for the people who entrusted him to it (sic). It should read “it to him”. I ask you why the venom? Why the acid? Just how has he hurt you, or betrayed you, or insulted you?” Yes I read your diatribe, but my sense is that you will criticize him regardless of what he does, or how, now he starts his tenure in office. Did you vote? Remember, you will get another chance four years from now to dismiss him from Ottawa. You have the liberty to “dis” this man from now until then. Hm-m-m. Only in Canada, you say! You unloaded freely because of your position with the newspaper. People have read you, and I with a lot of others are now wondering if what you write is worth reading. Yes I will continue to read you because I have tended to see you in a positive manner until this last toxic lashing out at a man you have

probably never met. What do you really know about this man? I lived in Zimbabwe where, for 15 years I witnessed both verminous white and black tyranny. I have observed both Ian Smith’s and Robert Mugabe’s villainous ways of political leadership. My friend, here in Canada we live in absolute paradise, and it is you who needs to do a bit of self-examining as to your attitude toward democracy. As yet I do not see you as a mealy mouthed jerk. Should I? Man, change your mind and have respect for your office and the people who entrusted it to you. Just a minute; wasn’t that Conrad Black, come to think of it – a very accomplished coach. I am a lover of democracy, free press, free speech, freedom to think and to move – all such good stuff. Cliff Ratzlaff Abbotsford
Still working on a proper definition Editor, the Times:
Jack Ellis faithfully repeats the egregious error of Richard Peachey when he confuses etymology with meaning. There is nothing thoughtful – in any context – with pretending that the etymology of a word somehow limits its meaning. By and large, if we want to know what a person means by a word he uses, we simply ask a plain, respectful question, “What did you mean, please?” This humble, thoughtful question leads to understanding. Specifically, if we sincerely want to know what “homophobia” means, we easily ask the speaker to give a synonomous expression. This is exactly what we do with “racism”. Synonomy, not etymology, is the key to meaning. It is a pedantic waste of time and not at all legitimate to belabour the Greek/Latin meaning of “homo” and reach the fallacious conclusion that the meaning of “homophobia” is inaccurate, according to the wrong-headed semantic theory of Peachey/Ellis. We speak English, not Greek or Latin.
Following the worthless Peachey/Ellis theory, we must conclude that there is something wrong with the word “automobile” because of its etymology. After all, “auto” means “self” in Greek, and so an automobile must be mobile all by itself and without a driver! But this conclusion is as deliberately obtuse as that of Peachey/Ellis in regard to “homophobia”. Don’t take “automobile” literally i.e. etymologically. The word “semitic” applies to certain MidEastern languages. There are semitic languages just as there are Finno-Ugaritic ones. Following stupidly the Peachey/Ellis theory of meaning, we must conclude that a Nazi antisemite is really just against a class of languages! We correct this egregious error by abandoning etymology (good riddance to bad rubbish) and focussing on the actual behavior of people identified as anti-semites. Likewise, we understand a homophobe by focussing on the behavior of people identified as homophobes. There is nothing original about Peachey/Ellis semantics. It is neither legitimate nor thoughtful. Instead, it is recognizable and derivative and has been moving around certain Christian (unannointed) web-sites in the United States for years and years. Greg Lanning Abbotsford
Pay phones are already being missed Editor, the Times:
The removal of pay phones has caused me a lot of inconvenience as I cannot use a cell phone for health reasons. I had car trouble late at night and could not find a pay phone. A friend from long distance that came to visit for the first time had brought my phone number but not my address also could not call me. Now that some reports are suggesting that cell phones can cause cancer I feel that we should not be forced to use a cell phone. My message to Telus and Mission council: bring back the pay phones. SIRLOIN STEAK............. 599
Editor, the Times:
Storm clouds are gathering once again and all indications are that our community is facing another potentially harmful change that appears to be largely promoted by councillor Moe Gill and local trucking associates. This of course relates to the new task force on commercial truck parking. I along with a number of colleagues attended a meeting on Tuesday, May 31 where we understood that we would have an opportunity to voice our concerns. However, with the large number of obviously very angry residents present, this was suddenly changed at the last minute and we were denied this privilege. The recommendations noted in the draft copy make it rather obvious that we are going to see a continuing overall decay to our community especially in the residential areas. I am sure that Mayor George Peary who has done so much for our community during his long and distinguished service finds himself in a quandary as new municipal elections rapidly approach. In as much as it was never his nature to support anything that will damage our community, he knows that if he obstructs the new truck parking bylaw he will once again be on thin ice and may face defeat at the next polls. This would be such a shame and it is imperative that we prevent this from happening by rallying to his support and show Gill and all of his supporters that you and I still have the majority vote in this community and that we are a force to be reckoned with. The Abbotsford Police have been involved in this task force ever since its inception, and be assured that they have constantly voiced their disapproval of any changes to the current bylaw which is in force right now. They insist that it is an excellent law which has done an good job at controlling traffic issues in our community and it ought to be left just as it is. If Gill and his associates cannot understand that there is to be no truck parking in our residential areas under any circumstances, then he has outlived his welcome on city council and the time has come for you to do your duty. t was spectacle within spectacle during Cirque Du Soleil’s Dralion at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre on the weekend. “People were very excited and the response I got from the media, they all loved it. It was all very favourable,” said show publicist Marnie Wilson. The show was a flurry of contrasting colours, cultures, costumes and sounds expertly woven together with astonishing physical feats that symbolized the search for harmony between humanity and nature. In Dralion, the four elements of fire, water, air and earth took on colourful human personas that evoked visions of Asia, India, Arabia, and Africa, and transported the audience to a realm chock-full of dazzling acrobatics and magic. Invited or not, a lovable trio of bumbling clowns tagged along with the mythical creatures to provide some very down-to-earth comedy. The seven local shows were extremely well attended, with people filing in not only from Abbotsford but from throughout the Lower Mainland, said Michaella Petrik, director of marketing with AESC. The show’s name is derived from its two emblematic creatures: the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West. Performers in the show reached for the heavens, with seemingly effortless stunts that prompted exclamations from the audience stunned by the level of agility, skill and strength on display. A troupe of 50 international gymnasts, acrobats, dancers, musicians and singers showed off a range of acts that included hoop

diving, trampoline tricks, balancing on balls, and aerial flight. As much as Dralion’s players, the mammoth set was a dynamic character in itself. Its huge metallic wall, with plates suggestive of Asian armour, provided a platform for artists to leap and land upon. Suspended high above the stage, three large concentric inter-working rings acted as the gateway through which enchanted creatures ascended and descended into the world of Dralion. And the show was a realm in itself that featured two hours of non-stop energy and sensory sensation that, at its end, left bedazzled visitors wonderfully bewildered upon their return to reality. ◗ Dralion is now off to Oregon, for two days, before returning to Canada with stops in Victoria and then Penticton.

Grooming good business with the Chamber

oving what you do for a living is very important to Krista Folk, the owner of Krista’s Dog Grooming Salon in Abbotsford. “I love my job. I love coming to work everyday,” said Folk. “Everyday is different, but I always get to be around dogs.” There aren’t many people who can combine an outside passion with their work. Dogs, which Folk has always loved ever since she was a child, have been her key to a successful grooming business. “I’ve always done something with animals, and grooming was a natural progression.” Folk, who specifically loves poodles and is the owner of one-yearold Shyla, has been grooming dogs professionally for more than 20 years, both in Nelson and here in Abbotsford. Being the owner of a poodle, it’s a necessary skill, and not something that just anyone can do. In fact, it takes up to six years of
training and education. Folk has three certificates up on her wall to prove it. She’s a certified master groomer, an achievement that included a number of steps such as grooming a poodle and having it critiqued – a score less than 79 per cent and the test counts as a fail.
“It’s very busy and a wonderful business. You get to be friends with people and their dogs.” – Krista Folk
Then those who pass the test must apprentice before they can be certified. Folk’s hard work has paid off, and her business continues its steady stream of canine-friendly clientele, which she said is in large part because of her training.
“It’s very busy and a wonderful business. You get to be friends with people and their dogs,” she said. “Most people who have pets are kind and wonderful people. They love their dogs. They bring them in to have them groomed and they want to take care of them. “They want to see their pets are well-loved by their groomer or vet.” Now Folk is hoping her reputation as a dog lover and certified groomer can mix with the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, the local business networking organization she joined recently. “I have heard a lot of good things about the Chamber,” she said. “I was a member of the [Nelson Chamber of Commerce] when I lived up there 10 years ago. “I do find it very informative and that they do a lot for businesses.” ◗ For more information, check out www.kristasdoggrooming.com, or call 604-850-1213.

B
.C.’s new $3-million Targeted Skills Shortage Pilot Program ( TSSP) was launched in May across the province, and Bowman Employment Services, Inc. has been selected to exclusively deliver the program in the Fraser Valley Region including Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Langley, Abbotsford, Mission and Chilliwack. This pilot program is designed to help low-skilled employees who lack postsecondary training or other credentials gain new skills to improve productivity, take on new responsibilities and advance their careers. The TSSP targets four high-growth sectors where the demand for skilled workers over the next decade will be strong:

The program focuses on assisting lowskilled workers within businesses or nonprofit organizations with less than 100 employees. Through the program, up to $1,500 per employee or $7,500 per employer is available to pay for tuition fees and purchase training services, books, manuals and other study materials. ◗ For more information contact Susan Sambol with Bowman Employment Services at 604-466-1375 or ssambol@bowmanemployment.com.

Opportunity in the Middle Kingdom Trip to China opens eyes to economic possibilities

PRESIDENT’S Report
ǐ hǎo!! Thanks to the Google translation application, I was able to phonetically write “Hello” in Man-
darin. I learned this plus about two other words on our recent trip to Beijing and Shanghai, while representing the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce as a part of the Abbotsford trade mission trip to China. As all of us have heard, the growth of this country is hard to fathom, and difficult to grasp or understand. Believe me, nothing you have heard can really prepare you for what you will experience on the ground in this fascinating country. From the towering skyscrapers that are popping up everywhere on the outskirts

of Beijing to the endless string of barges we watched moving down the river in Shanghai, it is obvious that China is on the move and we ignore it at our peril. Of course there are many concerns with how China is managing its growth; from the smog in its cities to the many new high rises that are seemingly empty. However, the sheer size of their population and aggressive agenda of their one party government pretty much guarantee China is the next economic super power. As always, change and risk also spell

using a municipal police force as to those contracting the services of the RCMP. “We were extremely pleased with the support our resolution received on the floor,” said Abbotsford Chamber board chair Patrick Giesbrecht. The Chambers also called upon Victoria not to sign a new contract with the RCMP until the inequity was addressed. The Chamber feels there is no acceptable rationalization for vast discrepancies in policing costs for communities in B.C., suggesting communities utilizing the RCMP through the provincial policing agreement with less than 5,000 population essentially do not pay for policing, while those over 5,000 up to 15,000 pay 70 per cent of the cost and the large communities pay 90 per cent of cost. The 12 municipalities with their own police force pay 100 per cent of the costs.

A
bbotsford Chamber member MD Cosmetic & Laser Clinic celebrated its 10 year anniversar y last week with an open house complete with prizes, specials and a fundraiser for the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley. Since 2001, Dr. Haneef Alibhai and his team have treated more than 8,000 patients and have trained over 900 doctors in aesthetic medicine. When the clinic first opened it was the only full service cosmetic clinic in Abbotsford to offer procedures such as Botox Cosmetic, injectable fillers like Juvederm and laser skin treatments. “We are so proud to be a part of this community and have
found it so rewarding to provide services to thousands of people that truly make them feel better about themselves,” said Dr. Alibhai. “We wanted to use our anniversary as an opportunity to celebrate, but also give back to our community in a meaningful way.” At the heart of the MD Cosmetic & Laser Clinic celebration was a fundraiser for the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley ( WRSFV ), an organization that works for the safety and security of women and children by providing emergency shelter and transition houses. Congratulations to MD Cosmetic & Laser Clinic.

ever before has Sandy Chambers seen such dogged determination, such tenacity, such perseverance. Six days later, the head coach of the Heritage Park senior girls rugby team still spoke of her team’s goal line stand against Shawnigan Lake in the B.C. Double-A championship on May 28 with sheer amazement. The Stand, as it’s become known at Heritage Park, lasted more than eight minutes, right down to the final whistle. It preserved a precarious 3-0 lead and earned the Mission high school a senior girls B.C. Double-A championship in just its sixth year of competition. “I can’t even count how many times the kids turned them back,” said Chambers. “It was ferocious defence. It was amazing. I’ve actually never anything like that in high school sports; how determined and aggressive they were to keep Shawnigan from scoring. It was incredible.” Grade 12 student Lindsay

The Heritage Park senior girls rugby team from Mission celebrates its B.C. Double-A championship. The play came at a time when Heritage Park appeared to seize momentum, but with the score deadlocked 0-0 and the two teams clearly entrenched in a defensive struggle, Chambers decided
to take whatever points her team could get. The decision, albeit an unpopular one amongst her players at the time, paid off. “They were just giving me the dirtiest looks,” said the coach. “It ended up to be a good situation in the end.” A large factor in not just the
championship win, but the championship season was the large contingent of Grade 12’s, said Chambers. In fact her daughter, Erin, was named to the Presidents 15 for the tournament. Heritage Park defeated Williams Lake 67-0 and Lord Tweedsmuir 44-0 to advance to the final.
Local schools cooled at rugby B.C.’s The Rick Hansen Hurricanes placed fourth at this year’s B.C. High School Senior Boys Double-A Rugby Championships in Abbotsford. The Hurricanes lost to Rockridge in the bronze medal game at Rotary Stadium by a score of 28-17. However, this year’s team made it further in the provincial rugby championships than ever before in the school’s history. But their run for a provincial championship ended Thursday. The Hurricanes fell to powerhouse Collingwood by a
score of 29-7 in Thursday’s Double-A semifinal. The Yale Lions finished sixth in the Triple-A tournament, which also took place at the Abbotsford Exhibition Park. The Lions lost to St. George’s 41-24 in a wide open offensive contest. The Lions lost previously in the quarter-final to Carson Graham. The Robert Bateman Timberwolves defeated G.P. Vanier to finish ninth.
