oung Jaden Ferrario has an epic piece of Vancouver Canucks folklore. After Friday’s 1-0 victory over the Boston Bruins, world-class goalie Roberto Luongo handed his winning goal stick to the upand-coming Abbotsford hockey player.
“. . . security were really good. They said, ‘Not a hope, guys, it’s going to the kid.’” – Randy Ferrario dad
The eight-year-old centre/ goalie for the Abbotsford Chiefs is now preparing a shrine for Luongo’s shutout stick. “I’m going to put it in a trophy case,” the pleased-as-punch preAtom player said Sunday after a practice with the Chiefs. Jaden wasn’t the only youngster from Abbotsford to share a moment with the Canucks goalie. Jayson Smith, 10, from the Abbotsford Atom A2 Hawks led Luongo and the Canucks out onto the ice at the start of Game 5. Though he was close enough to ‘The Stick’ to share a private moment with the Canucks superstar, it was Jaden who ended up with the puck-stopper’s paddle once the dust settled. After the shutout win that put the Canucks one win away from the Stanley Cup, Luongo was circling the ice, drinking in the ovation from the crowd as he was named the game’s first star. “I ran up to the front, and

Jayson Smith of Abbotsford chats with Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo before Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. somebody picked me up,” Jaden recalled with an eager smile. “[Canucks mascot] Fin pointed to me. “The stick went a little too high, and the big people were fighting for it.” Jaden’s dad, Randy Ferrario, says there was quite a melee for the treasured keepsake, but eventually Jaden and the stick found each other. “All the guys went for it,” recalled Randy. “There was a little tug-of war action. “But security were really good. They said, ‘Not a hope, guys, it’s going to the kid.’”
Jaden became an instant celeb – ecstatic fans stopped the youngster so they could take a photo with Luongo’s history-making goalstick. “Everybody wanted photos with the stick. It took us an hour to get to our car.” Jaden plays for the Chiefs in spring hockey, but he now refuses to wear his winter-league gear – he played for the Abbotsford Bruins. Like superstitious Canucks fans everywhere, young Jaden has his own game-day ritual. Randy bought the up-andcoming goalie a signed Roberto Luongo stick before the playoff
run, and Jaden clutches it for the entire game, each and every playoff game. “For his birthday, he got a Luongo stick,” says Randy. “Every game, he holds onto the Luongo stick . . . If he goes to get a glass of water or goes to the washroom, somebody else has to hold onto it.” Leave it to younger brother Nikolas – another would-be hockey star – to dish the real dirt on Jaden’s obsession with Luongo’s stick. “For the Game 7 against Chicago,” said a wide-eyed Nikolas, 7, “he slept with it.” – WITH A FILE FROM CAM TUCKER/TIMES
bbotsford Canucks fan and bhangra singer Sony Dhugga had an epiphany while jumping up and down for joy in his living room with friends following Alex Burrow’s amazing OT goal in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final. “We were all cheering and jumping up and down and I thought, First reported @ ‘I need to so abbotsfordtimes.com something about this,’” said Dhugga. Punjabi-Canadians are huge Canucks fans and Dhugga wanted to create something that reflected that passion. “I’m really a fan of the Canucks and I like my team so I decided to act . . . and singing is my passion.” Dhugga phoned up buddy and lyricist Kulvir Sahota the next morning, and told him he wanted to create a bhangra tribute song to the Vancouver team. “He’s a very good writer, and he absorbed everything I was thinking about. He stayed up to 2 a.m. to finish it,” said Dhugga. The singer then contacted his friend and producer Nick Chowlia, and within about four hours the song – titled ‘Canucks Waleyan Ne’ or ‘Paying Tribute to the Canucks’– was born. The song, though only days old, is attracting loads of attention. It’s already hit the airwaves on the Punjabi station RedFM and the CBC, and Dhugga’s already fielded a TV interview. Dhugga, who also works as a trucker and a reserve gunner for the Canadian Armed Forces, is not surprised the energetic song is capturing people’s attention – even if they don’t speak Punjabi. “A lot of South Asians are Canuck fans and people see them on the street after games. In [the Stanley Cup] everybody in Canada is together and we all celebrate together.” ◗ To listen to Canucks Waleyan Ne’ visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjFzqm_MA&feature=youtu.be&hd=1. Nora. “No, no. Everything in moderation. But I take a glass of sherry before my meal.” Along with 50-plus family, friends and neighbours, a contingent of Abbotsford Police officers descended on the event to sing her a happy birthday armed with a cake, flowers, and an APD teddy bear. The five patrol cars parked on the road attracted a lot of attention in the condo complex. “Everybody thought they were going to arrest her,” teased granddaughter Dianne Jager. “What a birthday everybody’s given me!” exclaimed Nora. Along with a declaration of congratulations, acting Mayor Les Barkman presented the birthday girl with a blue fleecy scarf.

“It will be useful when I get old,” said Nora, who is surprisingly spry. Other than being a little hard of hearing and having to be careful of her right shoulder hurt in a fall when she was 100 years old, the senior is hale and hearty. “I have a little arthritis in my thumb, but I don’t take notice of it,” she says. An infamous card shark and bingo addict, Nora explains it’s all part of a concerted effort to keep her brain active. But it’s lucky she’s lived so long, as it’s given her a better chance of recouping her bingo money. 19-year-old Abbotsford skateboarder is in hospital in critical condition after being struck by a pickup truck at the intersection at Marshall Road and Majestic Crescent on Friday night. The teenage male on the skateboard and a Ford F150 truck headed east on Marshall collided at around 11:15 p.m., said Const. Ian MacDonald. “The next 24- to 48-hours are important in how well the young man will do,” said MacDonald. There were several witnesses to the incident, including a First reported @ westbound abbotsfordtimes.com driver who narrowly missed the same skateboarder a split second earlier as he entered the intersection. “The driver of the first vehicle had to make a hard right on Majestic [to miss the skateboarder] . . . the bad news is he continued past the centre line and put himself in the path of a truck.” The 27-year-old male driver of the truck, who was sober, remained on scene and fully cooperated with police, said MacDonald, adding the driver and his female passenger were badly shaken by the accident. The skateboarder, who suffered severe head injuries, was treated on scene by Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and BC Ambulance personnel before being transported to hospital and later airlifted to another Lower Mainland hospital. MacDonald said the collision analysts are still working to determine exactly what occurred, and are hoping to talk with the young skateboarder. Investigators still have no estimate of his speed, but witnesses report he came out of nowhere and they saw him get hit by the truck. The crash is yet another reminder for everyone to be conscious of pedestrian safety, particularly during the Stanley Cup playoffs which draws so many cars and pedestrians out onto the streets, MacDonald said. “We’ve had too many tragedies [in the past], which have involved pedestrians and another skateboarder,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured young man and his family members.”

“Every person he’s come across, they just end up completely loving the guy.” – John Smeysters Jr.
A man with a big heart and contagious enthusiasm, Opa will be missed by a great number of people. “Every person he’s come across, they just end up completely loving the guy,” said grandson John Smeysters Jr. “He had love for everyone. His whole life he was a giver. He didn’t expect much in return . . . trying to make other people feel the best they could about themselves.” The loss has also hit Hawks football program hard. Not only was Opa an integral part of maintaining the football field and ordering team uniforms and equipment, but he dedicated countless amounts of hours to helping players and coaches, making them smile and enjoy the game, said head coach

bbotsford lost of one of its funloving and good-hearted characters on Friday. John “Opa” Smeysters, a volunteer at W.J. Mouat and with the school’s football team, the Hawks, passed away on June 10 after a nine-month battle with asbestos cancer at the age of 74. A memorial bursary will be started in his honour.
– YVONNE CHURLY/FOR THE TIMES
John “Opa” Smeysters was a regular with the W.J. Mouat Hawks football team. Denis Kelly. “He was outstanding in terms of his influence on the kids,” said Kelly. “He was an unbelievable person for the school to have.” Opa worked at W.J. Mouat strictly on a volunteer basis. He was always at school functions, and was part of the lunchtime security group. He even spoke to classes about his experiences growing up in Holland during the height of the Second World War. “Every facet of the school he was involved in. He made some unbelievable contributions,” said Kelly. Added former Hawk linebacker Ty Declare on the Facebook memorial
page that has been set up: “Opa, you have touched all our lives, and you will never be forgotten. You have been such a big influence in my life alone, and all of my memories of Mouat are filled with your smiling face. I know you are in God’s hands now. You will always be in my heart.” A memorial service will be held on Thursday at the Northview Community Church (32040 Downes Rd, Abbotsford) at 11 a.m. All current and past Mouat football players are to asked to wear their Hawks’ jackets. People are asked to donate money to the bursary that will be set up in Opa’s name, instead of flowers or gifts.

stretch of the TransCanada Highway is being dedicated as the Highway of Heroes to honour B.C.’s 12 Canadian Forces members killed in Afghanistan, as well as one killed in Croatia in 1994. The section of the highway, between the 152nd Street exit in Surrey and the Sumas Way exit in Abbotsford, was unveiled Saturday during the second annual Memorial Ride for the Fallen. The dedication is especially meaningful to Ann Bason, whose son Master-Cpl. Colin Bason was killed by a roadside bomb in Kandahar in 2007. Her younger son, Beric, went missing on a fishing trip just days after his brother’s death. Bason said she was proud to see the highway dedicated to B.C.’s dead military personnel. “It takes a special person to do something like that,” she said. “We need to show appreciation for the sacrifices these young women and men have made.” Colin had deep respect for fallen soldiers, his mother said.
“He had holidays a couple months before he died, and he visited some [military] graveyards in Holland and Germany. “It was his way of paying tribute to those who had fallen.” Ann Bason and several other Silver Cross mothers rode on the backs of motorcycles Saturday as hundreds of bikers paid tribute to service people killed in the line of duty. A 5.5-by-2.4-metre sign marks the highway near the 232nd Street exit in Langley. Barry Drews, vice-president of the 3rd Canadian Army Veterans Ubique Unit, started the memorial ride last summer and inspired the dedication by nicknaming the stretch the Westcoast Highway of Heroes. The Ministry of Transportation contacted him shortly after to discuss officially renaming the highway, Drews said. A section of Ontario’s Highway 401 between CFB Trenton and Toronto was dubbed the Highway of Heroes in 2007 because it is routinely lined with civilians and veterans to honour each Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan during repatriation of the body.

Doctors tracing Mennonite blood
ROCHELLE BAKER RBaker@abbotsfordtimes.com
T
here may be more to having Mennonite blood other than family history. A pair of researchers with the Fraser Health Authority is investigating the link between too much iron in the blood and a previously identified genetic variation in a Mennonite family. Doctors Samuel Krikler and Chris Whittington are trying to establish if there is a link between iron overload in the blood – which can cause serious health problems such as liver disease and joint problems – and a modified gene discovered in
some Mennonites. “We have found a genetic variation in a Mennonite family, but we don’t know if it’s a spurious finding,” said Krikler. Some genetic variations, like the genes that control hair colour, are harmless, but others may cause disease such iron overload. “With an apparent correlation between one condition and another, we have to prove it’s not just by chance.” The researchers hope to test around 100 adult Mennonites of both genders to establish if the link between the gene and blood condition really exists.
People who participate in the study will not only help a scientific cause, but the larger Mennonite community and possibly even themselves. “Individuals may discover they have inherited iron overload that they weren’t aware of,” said Krikler, adding early identification means early treatment before the disease can damage the body. “But individuals who find the study attractive are probably altruistic individuals who are interested in the health of the whole community,” he said. People will have an opportunity to ask questions and read a consent form before
deciding whether they are interested in participating in the research. ◗ If you are of Mennonite heritage, and would like to find out more about the study, call 604-853-2611.

The beach can be used with caution, but the water will not be accessible. The Hayward boat launch and dog beach will be closed. The picnic grounds will remain open and available for public use. Trails will remain open; however hikers will be unable to complete the Railway/Reservoir Trail loop due to the closure of both Ruskin Dam and the Floating Bridge at Hairsine Creek. A Stanley Cup deadline diary I
t’s 8:26 a.m. Friday, June 10 and the puck can’t drop soon enough. Superman costume aside, the first T-shirt I remember pulling from my old cedar drawers was black, with three-quarter sleeves and a patch emblazoned with a thin white stick slicing across an oblong swath of blue. I was Trevor Linden on the streets of Hope, rushing home to the sounds of Stan Smyl’s (probably rookie) card ticking through the spokes of my all-black BMX bike so I could play King Richard Brodeur’s album one more time before bed. The kid down the road was always Patrick Roy in net; his glove hand flashing and thrusting theatrically in the middle of our street, even after the tennis ball whacked him straight in the bleu, blanc & (suddenly) rouge belly. Watching him flop like a doomed Sucker’s Creek salmon I’d think: “King Richard wouldn’t do that. He’s a real champ.” But he wasn’t. And as of this writing, nobody’s been. Nostalgia is taking hold.

Inside addition mugs and shirts, not to mention a coffee mug, shot glass, pillow, fleece blanket and, most recently, an old-school jersey – a birthday present from my younger brother and his lovely wife. But I also boast a heavy box of Boston Bruins booty, including a thick stack of mid-’90s Bruins hockey cards, and my junior high jersey with Bourque’s ‘77’ stitched on each arm. As high school ground to an end, so did my devotion for the black-and-gold bears, and Vancouver recaptured its crown. As corny and cliché as it sounds, having these two teams battle for Stanley’s chalice with Vancouver holding a slight lead has truly been a dream come true.
7:52 p.m. Friday
One win from the Stanley Cup!! Family member visiting from Calgary rooting for the Bruins looks pathetically sad. Trying to play good host, I tell him his team has a great goalie, but the rest are all losers bound to fail like hydrogen cars in front of millions of people. His mood doesn’t change.
Photographing a wedding in Chilliwack. Choosing a matrimonial Saturday that slides between Finals games reminds me of Henrik’s pass to Burrows through Niemi’s legs in Game 4 against the Sharks. Fighting irresistible urge to flee to my TV and break down the tape from Friday, but I’m stuck here capturing pure, inspiring bliss. Kind of like Max Lapierre’s game-winner last night.
10:16 p.m. Sunday
Just realized that by the time you read this, a new Stanley Cup champion could already be crowned. Column taking on the feel of a time capsule. Couch fire set by Calgary family member pretty much out.
t press time, the Vancouver Canucks were either on the verge of winning their first-ever Stanley Cup, or on the wrong end of a serious momentum swing. Either way, here’s hoping the Canucks and fellow finalist, the Boston Bruins, try to keep their emotions in check (as hard as that may be) and play with some form of etiquette – especially with record numbers of fans across North America watching them battle for “Lord Stanley’s Mug.” Here’s hoping fans won’t have to witness another chilling sight of a motionless player laying on the ice, his unblinking, open-eyed stare at the stadium lights a sure sign his brain had been whipped into scrambled eggs – the way Boston winger Nathan Horton looked after absorbing a hit from Canuck defenceman Aaron Rome. Here’s hoping the term “finger food” will apply solely to game-time appetizers like chicken wings and jalapéno poppers, and not to opposing players’ digits. Here’s hoping the Boston players don’t stick their fingers into the mouths of their Vancouver adversaries in a classless attempt to entice them to take a nibble. Here’s hoping the post-whistle calf jabs, face-washes, and chest-bumps that have plagued the series so far fall by the wayside. The same rules apply for the fans. Here’s hoping a potential Canucks’ series win (or, unlikely loss) won’t result in a repeat of the riot of ’94, when a lunatic fringe swarmed Vancouver’s Robson Street and created general mayhem, embarrassing the city, the province, and the fans who truly support their home team and the sport. Here’s hoping the Canucks and Bruins get back to playing some good, old-fashioned hard-nosed hockey. And may the best team win.

P3 deals can make taxpayers hostages Editor, the Times:
As a long-time previous resident of Abbotsford I am sincerely concerned with the welfare of the City of Abbotsford, mayor, council and taxpayers regarding finding an additional new source of water. My personnel opinion and additional information regarding P3 systems (Europe, etc.) are negative. Past information supplied that P3’s have world-wide derogatory effects regarding taxpayers, where privately funded water systems are concerned. This provincial government has signed secret contracts, with hidden penalties and payment fees for the Sea to Sky, Golden Ears Bridge, etc., and one way or another the taxpayer ends up paying as an end user, or in taxes. The Golden Ears Bridge has high daily commuter
costs, as well as privately signed negotiated Trans Link payments to the P3’s amounting to millions of dollars per year, as part of the contract. P3’s have shown the consumer can be held hostage, with little redress as to spiralling increase in costs – all at the peril of the consumer. I am also cognizant of the fact that mayor and council have the best interests at heart for the citizens of Abbotsford. They are in a quandry, but genuinely committed to ensure that the citizens of Abbotsford have a clean and continuous supply of fresh water for years to come, without being held for ransom at the peril of P3’s. I personally offer best wishes to mayor, council and the taxpayers of Abbotsford for a solution that is acceptable to all concerned. R.D. Machon Vanderhoof

Harper had no place at Stanley Cup Final Editor, the Times:
So the Prime Minister, his daughter and B.C. MP James Moore commandeered the government jet to the Vancouver CanucksBoston Bruins Game 4 in Boston. Apparently Mr. Harper justifies the action by saying he paid for his game tickets and reimbursed Canadian taxpayers for the amount it would have cost him to take a commercial jet. No word as to who paid for security members to sit through the game. This is considered acceptable action? What makes this any different from an individual using the com-

pany car for personal use? A habit, incidentally, that is frowned upon by Revenue Canada. Will Mr. Harper now claim the jet’s travel cost as a taxable benefit? And when he visited the press box in Boston, it’s too bad he wasn’t asked about spiralling federal debt, double-digit youth employment, deteriorating conditions on aboriginal reserves and G8 Legacy spending in Tony Clement’s riding. I view the prime minister’s actions as arrogant, hypocritical and representative of a sense of entitlement that is entirely off the scale. Sure, go to the game. But do it on your own time and your own dime. Regina Dalton Abbotsford
It’s time to do away with the Senate Editor, the Times:
PM Harper will reportedly be looking at cost cutting in various areas, which are not truly productive under present circumstances. Certainly it is long overdue that governments at all levels should continually examine what citizen’s money is being spent on. A really big expenditure is the Senate, and it should be totally abolished. At it’s creation, it seemed a good idea to have another group give “second sober thought” to proposed legislation before it was passed into law. However, the MPs who now sit in the House in Ottawa and who propose, debate and pass legislation, are elected to do so and must take charge. If a particular proposed bill needs more thought or investigation, the Speaker could have it held in abeyance, which would give the MPs from all par-
ties time to give it further thought. Finally, it would be helpful to the public to know the total cost of having the Senate. We should know current salary each senator is paid; the length of tenure 25 years or until 75 years of age; what other expenses are incurred such as separate facilities where they sit and salaries, etc., of attending staff; what pensions are senators awarded when they leave before age 75; what other items they can submit for reimbursement such as travelling, accommodation, medical for themselves and family during and after tenure, etc. And all this for being on hand for perhaps half the year or even less if they choose. Adding up all these costs for each of the present 39 senators would total many millions of dollars every year which could be better used elsewhere. Lila Rauh Mission

This award is given to the student graduating from a bachelor’s degree with the top grade point average. Prachnau’s 4.33 GPA over her past 30 credits earned her the distinction. That’s an A+ mark in every course that counted toward the calculation. Prachnau, who also minored in biology, isn’t completely sure of her future plans, but they include taking the Optometry Admissions Test, with the possibility of enrolling in optometry school at Waterloo University in Ontario.

Local Roadshow Expert Examines Some Gold Jewellery
After many very successful shows around the Lower Mainland, The Roadshow is now here here in inAbbotsford, Langley, BC. So you had better search through your attics and garages, go through your lock boxes and jewellery, because you may be sitting on a small fortune and not even know it! Roadshow experts are here to examine all your antiques, collectibles, gold and silver.
jewellery she was never going to wear anyways. Expert Elijah Gold explains, “We have noticed a substantial increase in the amount of precious metals such as gold and silver coming to the Roadshow, which makes sense considering how high it’s currently trading at. He added, “The Roadshow is great because it puts money in people’s pockets, especially during such hard times. Lots of items that are just sitting around collecting dust in basements and jewellery boxes can be exchanged for money, on the spot!”
During a show near Toronto, a woman came in with a jewellery box that she had just inherited from her late aunt. “I don’t wear jewellery,” explained Barbara Engles, “so it was an easy decision to come down to the Roadshow to sell it”. She was very excited when she was able to walk away with a cheque for over $2,100 for
At another Roadshow event, a woman, named Mira Kovalchek, walked in with a tin full of hundreds of old coins that were given to her as a young child by her grandfather. She finally decided to come in to the Roadshow and see what he had given her. She was ecstatic to learn she had coins dating back to the late 1800’s, some of which were extremely rare.
Roadshow consultant Perry Bruce explains “We had uncovered an 1871 Queen Victoria 50 Cent piece, valued at over $2,000!! She had a nice assortment of coins that were not rare dates, but she was able to sell them for their silver content”. She explains, “I never would have thought that my old tin of coins was worth so much! I can finally afford

to renovate my kitchen”. Perry Bruce continued, “Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value”.
Experts at the Roadshow will evaluate and examine your items, FREE OF CHARGE, as well as educate you on them. The Roadshow sees hundreds of people during a one week event, and they have been travelling across Canada to different cities and towns, searching for your forgotten treasures. Trains, dolls, toys, old advertising signs, pocket watches, porcelain and bisque dolls, pretty much everything can be sold at the Roadshow. Any early edition Barbie’s are sought after by the Roadshow collectors, as well as a variety of Dinky Toys and Matchbox cars. Lionel Trains and a
variety of tin toys can also fetch a price, especially if they are in their original box or in mint condition. If a collector is looking for one of your collectibles, they often make offers to buy them.
A man brought in a 1950’s Marx Tin Toy Robot, in fairly good condition, still in its original box. We were able to locate a collector for that specific toy within minutes, and that gentleman went home with over $700 for his Toy Robot and a few other small toys. So whether you have an old toy car, a broken gold chain, or a Barbie sitting in the closet, bring it down to the Roadshow, we will take a look at it for FREE and it could put money in your pocket!
See you at the Roadshow!

Tour Fraser Valley farms F
rom apples to buzzing bees, the Abbotsford Circle Farm Tour offers a farm fresh experience for folks of all ages. From country markets, flavoured honey, hand-crafted soaps, to gourmet ice cream and display gardens, the self-guided tour is a must for family stay-cations or for entertaining those out-of-town visitors this summer. With the self-guided tours, families can take in as many or as few stops as they want.
Some unique places to visit include:
■ Birchwood Dairy, a real working dairy farm. They offer 50 flavours of gourmet ice cream, European style yogurts, cheeses including feta, cheddar curd and more at 1154 Fadden Rd. Abbotsford. Visit
www.birchwooddairy.com for more details.
■ Bakerview Eco Dairy, the first demonstration farm of its kind in Canada, which includes a learning centre, animal exhibits, robotic milker, picnic grounds, market and more at 1356 Sumas Way. Check out www.ecodairy.ca for details. ■ Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery with self-guided and guided tours, fishing instruction, summer camps, birthday parties and more at 34345 Vye Rd. Plenty to do outdoors this summer
A bevy of back roads and ball parks and scoot an hour – or more depending on bridge traffic – into Vancouver. That being said, there are some fun activities in that direction, so lets cover them first. Summer was made for being outdoors. Fortunately, the Vancouver Whitecaps, B.C. Lions, who used to hold training camp in Abbotsford, and the Vancouver Canadians provide some of the best bang for your buck in terms of outdoor sports entertainment. Empire Field, temporary home of the Whitecaps and Lions, is once again about to close its doors with the renovations at B.C. Place nearly complete, so there is literally no better time than the present to check out both teams

elieve it or not the sun is supposed to, some day, find its way out of the dark dreary clouds and into its usual place amidst blue skies. Summer is right around the corner, seven days away in fact, and there are plenty of outdoor sports-related activities for just about everybody to enjoy. And they don’t all require the family to hop into the minivan
– FILE/ TIMES
There are many courses to challenge every golfer, regardless of skill level. on a nice summer night. Then there are the Canadians. Nat Bailey Stadium has long been known as the “most beautiful little ball park in North America,” and there is truly no
better backdrop to catch some of baseball’s brightest up-andcoming talent. Those activities are all well and good, but what if you don’t want to drive outside of Abbotsford?
There’s plenty of summertime goings-on and the price is right. For instance, Abbotsford is home to a handful of golf courses and driving ranges, most notably Ledgeview Golf and Country Club, which has produced some of the best Canadian talent to hit the links in recent years. Perhaps golf isn’t your thing. Abbotsford boasts both challenging and laid-back hiking and mountain biking trails that snake their way through the wilderness of nearby mountains. Not only does hiking or mountain biking allow you to get back to nature, but it’s tremendous exercise, particularly if you’re like me and nothing satisfies your hunger like a steak and potatoeshold-the-vegetables kind of meal. see OUTDOORS, page A15

Runaway con caught A
n inmate who escaped from the minimum security Ferndale Institution in Mission last month has been caught after 15 days on the loose. Burnaby RCMP arrested Andrew David Shizgal, 40, without incident in an area of south Burnaby on June 7, driving a BMW that had earlier been reported stolen. The BMW Shizgal was driving in was reported stolen on Tuesday morning. The family contacted BMW corporate office and the GPS tracking device was initiated, which
allowed police officers an opportunity to run surveillance on Shizgal courtesy of the RCMP Air 1 helicopter. Members of the Burnaby RCMP and its prolific offender team tracked Shizgal in the vehicle before making the arrest a short time later. Shizgal was nearing the end of a 10-year sentence for a plethora of break and enter convictions and was eligible for parole in 18 months before he walked out of Ferndale on May 23.

and she spent hours of her time contributing to the war effort by collecting newspapers to be recycled and picking blackberries, which were used to dye RAF uniforms. Nora immigrated to the country with her husband and daughter and settled in Abbotsford in 1949. “There wasn’t much when I arrived. When I sit and think about it, it’s amazing how things have changed.” The terrain in Canada was a far cry from the hills of Haselmere, England. Nora and her daughter got a shock on the journey to their new home when they stepped out of the train in Revelstoke. “We were surrounded by these enormous mountains. We broke out crying we were
so terrified.” Nora came to love the mountains of Canada, particularly her beloved Mt. Baker, which she’s always been lucky enough to see from her homes. At her party, much like a royal in a reception line, Nora was subject to a constant queue of well-wishers. In addition to congrats from local authorities, Nora also received official birthday wishes from Abbotsford MP Ed Fast, Premier Christy Clarke, and the provincial opposition leader Adrian Dix, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, B.C Lt.-Gov. Steven L. Point, David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and of course, Queen Elizabeth. “Oh well . . . we heard from her the last time,” said Nora’s granddaughter.

Two, to be making your own decisions and just being the guy where the buck stops. I want that responsibility. This is a good fit, it’s a good organization.” His new job also ensures he’s clos-

The Heat had among the worst travel schedules in the entire American Hockey League last season, mostly because they are the only team on the western seaboard. “The commitment that Abbotsford has is a lot of travel, it’s a lot of time away,” he said. This season, the Heat were once again victims of a nasty injury bug and failed to make the postseason, struggling to mount any offence as they pushed to make the playoffs. However, the writing may have been on the wall for Playfair for some time. He spent one season as head coach of the Flames in 2006/07, but was replaced by Mike Keenan before eventually taking a job with the Heat in June, 2009. The fact Feaster, who took over as the Flames interim GM in December 2010 and officially anointed full-time general manager duties in May, didn’t re-sign Playfair long-term meant the coach was expendable. xcellent pitching and clutch hitting helped the Abbotsford Cardinals come back in a two-game Sunday sweep over the White Rock Tritons. The Cardinals needed extra innings to defeat the Tritons 4-3 in the first of two games Sunday at DeLair Park, and again in the back half of the double-header that ended in a 2-1 final for the home team. In both games, the Cardinals found themselves down by a run and were able to forge wins on the strength of clutch hits in extra innings. “Offensively we just didn’t execute today,” said coach Andy Rempel. “We were all over the place but guys stuck with it and came through when we had to. They fought. We got down in the eighth inning of the first game and guys . . . They were resilient today. I think that’s the best way to describe it.” Alex Massier drove home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning of the series finale with a sharp single to left field that scored Matt Buse. His infield single with the bases loaded – again in the bottom of the eighth inning – scored Ryan Lucky from third base. But the underlying theme all afternoon was pitching. The Cardinals used just four chuckers on the day, and got seven innings each from both starters, Steve Federau and Ryan Martin. “I thought it was a good game, I struggled a little bit with my control but it was
well pitched game,” said Martin. While Martin and Federau were sensational, they weren’t credited for the wins. That fell to Matt Forsythe in the opener and Adam Balliet in the final. “Pitching wise we were great,” said Rempel. Sunday’s wins give the Cardinals three in a row, which puts them into the eighth and final playoff spot in the B.C. Premier Baseball League with 19 games remaining in the regular season.
