‘Whistler-style freak show’ feared

Plans for a gondola running up to SFU upset Burnaby Mountain residents Janaya Fuller-Evans

staff reporter

Residents on Burnaby Mountain are worried that a gondola to Simon Fraser University could adversely affect the neighbourhood. The gondola proposal went to public consultation in Burnaby this week, with two days of open houses. Members of Pine Ridge Heights Co-op told The Vancouver Sun last week that they were concerned about having tramlines overhead, and property values dropping. Members of the co-op and residents of the Forest Grove neighbourhood spoke at one of the open houses on Wednesday, angry at the route that was chosen for the line. “I think they will build it over the low income housing because those are the people that are easiest to bully,” Robin, a mother who lives in Pine Ridge Housing Co-op, said at the meeting. “We moved here because it’s peaceful and quiet for our children, and now we’ll have this beast going over us every 40 seconds. It’s horrible.” Not impressed: From left, Pine Ridge Heights Co-op residents One resident felt the route had already Glen Armstrong, Catherine Porter and Glen Porter are worried been chosen, and was being forced on the about safety, property values and privacy if a gondola goes neighbourhood. over the co-op. Extreme athletes tackle Burnaby Mountain Andrew Fleming staff reporter

The typically tranquil Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area will be uncharacteristically busy tomorrow when more than 200 athletes descend on it to compete in the 12th annual Mind Over Mountain Adventure Race Series (MOMAR), one of Canada’s biggest adventure race series. More than a decade ago, the EcoChallenge race and its accompanying reality TV series put adventure racing on the national radar. Since then, the former fringe sport

has gained popularity with a diehard demographic of outdoor athletes, and “MOMAR on the Mainland” will be making its Burnaby debut after being successfully hosted more than 30 times on Vancouver Island and near Squamish. The gruelling day will see individual competitors and teams alike mountain biking, kayaking, trekking and orienteering along either the 30 km sport course or the more hardcore 50 km enduro course, and some of the top names in the game will be there sweating it out. “With a great line-up of defending champs plus some talented MOMAR first timers, it’s sure to be an exciting

battle for the podium,” said race director Bryan Tasaka. “Look for Todd Nowack of Victoria, Bart Jarmula of Revelstoke and Norman Thibault of Nanaimo in the run for the top spot.” The actual course – which remains a well-guarded secret until the starter pistol sounds on Saturday morning – was designed by four-time MOMAR champion Gary Robbins and will take advantage of the expansive trail network of Burnaby Mountain, the Simon Fraser University campus and the waters of Burrard Inlet. “Gary has spent a lot of time perfecting the course, and it’s proving to be one heck of a route” said Tasaka. “Racers will love

the quality of the technical terrain, sweet single track, and the challenging navigation section.” Tasaka said the enduro course features roughly 10 kilometres of kayaking, 25 kilometres of mountain biking and 15 kilometres of trekking, with orienteering skills required to discover the actual routes. There is an eight-hour cut-off for all participants, although the top racers will likely finish in six to seven hours. HST: City leaders are split on cuts Janaya Fuller-Evans

staff reporter

The provincial government announced plans Wednesday to make the Harmonized Sales Tax more palatable to British Columbians in advance of a referendum on the tax next month. The plan would reduce the tax – which was introduced last July – from 12 per cent to 10 per cent in two phases; down to 11 per cent on July 1, 2012, and down to 10 per cent on July 1, 2014, according to Finance Minster Kevin Falcon. But business organizations, politicians, and HST critics all responded differently to the news. While the Burnaby Board of Trade does

not have an official position on the plan, because of the diverse make-up of its membership, the cuts are a good move, according to president and CEO Paul Holden. “The reduction would certainly improve anybody’s perception of the HST,” he said. “It’s a positive move by the government.” The board had not received feedback about the plan from members by Thursday, he said, but expects it is something the Burnaby business community will be discussing. The province plans to also issue onetime transition cheques to families of $175 per child and $175 to low and modest-income seniors as well, according to a report from the Ministry of Finance released Wednesday. The cheques would

be sent out by the end of the year. Funding for the transition cheques, which are estimated to cost $200 million, would come from a contingency fund, the report states. Increasing the corporate tax rate from 10 per cent to 12 per cent on Jan. 1, 2012, and indefinitely postponing the small business tax rate reduction planned for April 1, 2012 would cover the cost of the cuts. The report also states that programs would not be cut to compensate for the tax reduction. Critics, such as New Democrat MLA Raj Chouhan, say the plan will not help those most adversely affected by the tax, such as small business and restaurants in Burnaby.

Chouhan, MLA for Burnaby-Edmonds, called it a gimmick. “This is not a plan to protect B.C. families, it is a plan to protect B.C. Liberals,” he said in a phone interview Wednesday. He spoke with small businesses in his riding, he said, and was told they were disappointed. The only businesses who will profit from the HST are rich corporations, he said, calling it a tax transfer. “They’re trying to fool British Columbians, but British Columbians aren’t fooled,” Chouhan said. Association, said the association was also disappointed by the announcement. The tax has hit the industry hard, he said, at a particularly bad time. The corporate tax rate increase and the delay of the small business tax rate reduction would cause more problems for restaurants, while they still suffer from the effects of the HST, he said. That, on top of increased liquor taxes and increasing the minimum wage, could be devastating for restaurants, he pointed out. “It is an industry under siege,” Tostenson said. The government under Clark hasn’t been willing to communicate with the association any more than the government under Gordon Campbell, he added. “They’re trying to find a general solution,” he said. “They’re not keen on speaking to us individually.” But Liberal MLA Harry Bloy, who represents the Burnaby-Lougheed riding, said it is the best plan for both consumers and businesses. The tax rate drop is a direct result of listening to British Columbians, he said, particularly at town hall meetings and through surveys.

“This is what they told us they wanted,” he said. He pointed out that the Canadian Federation of Independent Business is more willing to support the tax with the reductions. “I don’t believe as many people were against the tax as the way it was introduced,” he said, adding the initial introduction was not handled well The HST motion was tabled this week, to be discussed and voted on by the Legislature next week. HST combined the GST with a seven per cent provincial tax rate last year, setting the combined tax rate at 12 per cent. The HST applies to most goods and services previously subject only to the five per cent GST. A referendum on the HST is set for June 24, with the results announced some time in August. If the HST doesn’t survive the referendum, said Bloy, who is also the Minister of Social Development, B.C. would go back to having the PST and GST, and those with a low or modest income would lose the HST rebate. The rebate is staying at $230, even with the tax reduction, he added. www.twitter.com/janayafe

Aging doesn’t have to be Painful f

W

hen Carol’s doctor suggested that she see LaserHealth® Solutions for sciatica, she wasn’t able to garden or hike with her friends any more. She had pain in her hip and butt that often went right down to her foot. Even sitting was uncomfortable. What made it even more frustrating was that she had worked hard for many years and looked forward to an active retirement. She was a little nervous thinking about lasers, but learned at her first appointment that this is not the kind that cuts or burns. Instead, this laser gets absorbed by soft tissue. The treatment is called photobiostimulation – a word that means the use of specific wavelengths of light to activate biochemical energy and accelerate the healing process. Carol was relieved to learn that this treatment is gentle and relaxing. It took 10 visits over 4 weeks and Carol was thrilled. After nearly a year of agony and missing out on her favourite things, the pain was gone. Frank heard about LaserHealth® Solutions from a fellow golfer. Frank had lost a lot of power off the tee due to a rotator cuff injury. He admitted that his shoulder was so sore that it wasn’t only his golf game that was suffering. He was missing out on sleep because he couldn’t find a comfortable position and kept rolling over on the bad shoulder. His range of motion had also become limited. Reaching up or behind was challenging - and painful. He didn’t recall doing anything in particular to hurt his shoulder. It just seemed to come out of the blue - and was not going away. At his first appointment Frank learned that as people age, the shoulder becomes more susceptible to injury while doing everyday activities. Some elasticity in the muscles and tendons is lost and degenerative changes occur over time. Certain areas of the shoulder also have a poor blood supply which means healing can be quite slow. The good news is that the treatment provided at LaserHealth® Solutions helps increase blood supply and helps resolve the chronic inflammation present in shoulder injuries. Frank needed 12 treatments. It made all the difference to his golf game. He doesn’t cringe anymore when he swings his driver. And he’s sleeping through the night again.

Carol’s and Frank’s stories are not unusual for LaserHealth® Solutions, which provides this therapeutic treatment in the Surrey, Burnaby, and Vancouver clinics. It’s used for a wide variety of soft tissue conditions, including tendonitis, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff injuries, sprains, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, tennis and golfer’s elbow. And though they treat different body parts, but it won’t cost you an arm and a leg! Pricing is reasonable and comparable to other therapies. The effectiveness of the therapy varies from patient to patient, but after just a few weeks of treatment, most patients report they are pain-free and have returned to their regular activities. At www.laserhealth.ca, you can view 486 patient testimonials from people who were putting up with pain until they learned about LaserHealth® Solutions. On the website you will also see patients receiving treatment and learn more about how muscles, cartilage, ligaments and tendons absorb the red and infrared light, stimulating cells to increase their metabolism and regenerate healthy tissue. LaserHealth® treatments provide cells with more energy, resulting in the resolution of inflammation, reduced scar tissue formation, increased lymphatic drainage and improved blood circulation. World-renowned cellular biologist Dr. Mary Dyson has extensively published papers related to photobiostimulation. She’s found that cells can increase their repair rate six to eight times when exposed to specific wavelengths of light. In the end, most LaserHealth® Solutions patients don’t care so much about how the treatment works, they’re just happy that it works! Call the Burnaby clinic at 604-293-2273 to find out how to get rid of the pain you are experiencing.

he annual joy of the Fraser Institute’s school rankings has once again washed over everyone, like a sticky wave of melted slushee. Every year, the debate goes like this: FI: “Well, based on a handful of standardized tests and a couple of extra things we tossed into the Pot o’ Statistics, public schools kind of suck.” Teachers/school boards/ province: “No, it’s way more complicated than that, there’s ESL kids and special needs kids and funding pressures, and children are not plastic widgets!” FI: “But behold the superiority of private enterprise! The private schools always dominate the top of our list!” Oh, hold your horses there, Fraser Institute. There are hardly any private schools in B.C. But wait, you’re saying. I drive past one every day. You can’t just show up and drop off your kids there unless you sign a cheque. It’s a religious school, or they make the kids wear blazers and sweater vests, or it has

a happy-hippie arts-and-yoga program. No. That is probably not a private school. It gets between 50 and 35 per cent of the per-student funding that a public school gets, from the province. There are a few fully private schools in B.C. They get no government cash. They enrol 544 students. The “private” schools getting government money enrol more than 69,000 students. These are public schools that you, the taxpayers, cannot access without paying extra. Usually thousands of dollars extra, per child, per year. This is the issue that no one wants to talk about in B.C. education, the boil they don’t want to lance for fear of seeing the horrible stuff that would seep out. We have a two-tiered education system in this province, subsidized by everyone for the benefit of the upper middle class and the wealthy. Ask yourself how you’d feel if there was a hospital down the street that you couldn’t use without paying cash, even as a truck drove up and poured tax money directly into the pockets of the doctors. This is how we run private schools in B.C. There are two classes of parents in this province. There are

than honest with us about the HST at the outset. That dishonesty is why Christy Clark is now premier of B.C., instead of Gordon Campbell. And that dishonesty is the chief underpinning for opposition to the HST. Knocking two percentage points off the tax is unlikely to take the bad taste out of the mouths of B.C. residents who were forced to eat it in the first place. What happens if the HST is killed? For instance, how do we repay the federal government’s $1.6 billion bribe to imple-

ment the HST? And if the HST is cut to 10 per cent, what is the real remaining cost to taxpayers? Unfortunately, the current government’s attempt at bribery will only put up a smokescreen around the issue of whether or not the HST should be abandoned in the June 24 referendum. It will serve to remind voters of the dishonesty that brought us the tax in the first place, instead of helping us focus on the real pros and cons of keeping or discarding the HST.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Don’t label us all ‘dangerous’ Dear Editor:

I oppose the draft policy 5.45 of Burnaby school trustees, on grounds of discrimination against heterosexual parents. It is totally unfair to label those children and families that believe marriage is between a man and a woman as upholders of heterosexism, homophobic and “dangerous to individuals and society.” If pro-heterosexual people were dangerous, as policy 5.45 cites in the section of definitions, this danger has been with humankind since Day 1 of human history! Children will be taught that their heterosexual parents perpetuate negative stereotypes if they follow the curriculum as promoted by the policy 5.45.

We already have code of conduct to address discrimination of sexual orientation. Why do we need another one? It is good to teach children not to despise people who have different opinions or values. However, there is no need to waste children’s time in studying what LBGTQ really is. Children and adults who uphold and believe that marriage is between a man and a woman are not dangerous. The Burnaby school policy 5.45 is just another kind of discrimination against people who have a different view from that of Burnaby school trustees with regards to marriage and sexual relationship. Those trustees need to review what they really want to achieve with policy 5.45. Wayne Lo and Wilson Chan, Burnaby

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Some students do need special protection

Let’s not lose the point of new school board policy

I listened to an interview on CBC radio this afternoon with a member of the parent group opposing policy 5.45. The interviewee was trying to stress that all students are the same, so they all need to be protected from bullying in the same way. Of course it is true that all students need protection, but it is absolutely not true that all students are the same and need to be treated exactly the same. It is the difference between equality and equity. It is shortsighted to resist the truth that the minority and oppressed groups need special consideration. Many gay and lesbian students are not just bullied in the school system, but they are often not accepted in their own home. I, for one, cannot imagine facing the threat of violence or social stigma due to something I have no control over, especially if I also had no support in my home environment, my neighbourhood or my community. If Christian students were indeed the subject of bullying because of their religion (something the interviewee mentioned repeatedly as an example) one could assume they would find support within their family as well as church, which may buffer, even in a small way, the pain they experience elsewhere. Many gay and lesbian students do not have that same place of comfort, acceptance and love within their own homes, neighbourhoods or communities. Special groups do indeed need special protection under the law – it cannot be any other way. I strongly support the intent of this policy.

We have a small minority of Burnaby residents protesting against the school board on the adoption of the policy 5.45. I firmly believe they’re inflating this issue totally out of proportion. Amongst their reasons to why the school board should not adopt this policy, the most popular one seems to be “the teachers should concentrate on education, not indoctrination.” Right there, in my opinion, they are contradicting/confusing the issue of the policy. Last time I checked the dictionary, indoctrination meant: “to teach the beliefs of a particular group.” Maybe I need to be re-educated, but I fail to see where/how the school board, teachers or the policy in itself are trying to enforce beliefs of any kind on anyone. Let’s not lose sight of the advocacy of this policy. At home, we are free to teach our children anything we want about religion, sex, culture, etc. We don’t all have to be of the same beliefs or religion, and we’re entitled to our feelings when it comes to sex and/or sexual orientation. The policy is not prohibiting any of the above. It is simply telling us that we must be tolerant of people that are different from us in any way shape or form. The policy is meant to teach our children, and us, only that we must respect others as we would want others to respect us. Bullying and/or ridiculing anyone in schools or elsewhere must stop. It’s as simple as that!

those who can afford a private school. Maybe they can simply grab some money out of the big jar of hundreds they keep by the front door, next to the key rack for the Porsche, or maybe they’re more middle-class folks, who have to scrimp and save. Then there are the other parents. The ones who can’t afford private school, period. Their money goes to putting a roof above their children’s heads, food in their mouths, and maybe

some cash left over for a college savings fund. Even by the most generous standards, there are tens of thousands of these kids in B.C. Children of single parents. Children of parents working two or three jobs, each. Children in rural areas, where no private school will set up shop. So here’s my plan: We cut off all those not-soprivate schools from the public teat. We let them charge the full freight to parents, and we see if they can sink or swim.

Then we put all that money we just saved back into the public system. You know, the system starved for cash, with school librarians for 5.5 hours per week and a couple of aging portables for the third-graders? Some would kick and scream and rend their clothes, of course, but frankly, they’ve had decades of being coddled. Let’s do something for the poor kids this time. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Distorting the real truth

Dear Editor:

Re: New policy has weaknesses, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, May 20. Ben Seebaran’s quote from the American College of Pediatricians has been discredited by the American Academy of Pediatricians. A quick search on Google will inform you that the college was created as a reaction to the academy supporting LGBT rights. When the college sent out information about the implications of homosexuality, they were criticized for distorting research and encouraging prejudice. The use of a quote from the college is misleading and potentially harmful to readers, as their information is ideologically based, not evidence-based or supported by academy of pediatricians. It is interesting that Mr. Seebaran questions whether there is a political agenda behind the Burnaby school board’s LGBT policy, when the quotes he uses come direct-

ly from a group that has clearly defined itself as “Judeo-Christian, traditional values that is open to pediatric medical professionals of all religions who hold true to the group’s core beliefs: that life begins at conception; and that the traditional family unit, headed by an opposite-sex couple, poses far fewer risk factors in the adoption and raising of children.” The group is composed of 200 doctors – as opposed to the academy’s 60,000 members. Propagating misinformation about homosexuality from unsupported sources is bad policy. Evidence indicating that the LGBT lifestyle is high risk is indicative of marginalization and a need for more inclusive and better programming. That also includes creating policy that supports rather than ignores the LGBT community. It is about time the school system stood up for its students who have been discriminated against and had the policies to back itself up. C. Chant, registered nurse

BURNABY SCHOOLS

staff reporter

Burnaby school trustees faced more opposition to a draft anti-homophobia policy at Tuesday night’s board meeting. Nine people showed up to present on the issue, some for and some against. Local resident Gordon World spoke as one of the representatives from Parents’ Voice, an ad-hoc group that opposes the policy. The group wants a 90-day extension on the public consultation period, partly to buy time to get documents from a Freedom of Information request on the matter. “One of our main demand was: ‘90 days Mr. Hayes’ – that was our chant,” World said, referring to board chair Larry Hayes. “We’re saying give us 90 days. We still have people who want to talk about it. We have FOI requests that are still being ignored.”

Since 2005, Burnaby NOW readers have named Hats Off Day as their favourite local festival, and this year’s celebration is fast approaching. Spend Saturday, June 4 taking in the colourful parade, vintage car show and street festival, with food, music and fun for all ages.

The party runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on the stretch along Hastings Street, between Beta Avenue to Boundary Road. Gondola: Feedback deadline June 30 continued from page 1

“At $44 (million) per kilometre that would make the Burnaby Mountain gondola one of the most expensive cable transit systems ever built with little justification for the price increase,” he wrote. Another concern mentioned by both James and Dale is the vague criteria for assessing different technology options, as presented in the information boards for the meeting. Diesel bus, trolleybus, SkyTrain, LRT, rack railway, Funicular rail, aerial tram, monocable gondola and 3S gondola technology was compared in the planning study, according to

the information boards. A three-rope gondola system – like the Peak 2 Peak gondola on Whistler Mountain – was the one recommended. The recommended route was the one that would run from Production Way SkyTrain station to the campus. The gondola would run about 40 metres above the ground and tree canopy, over the Forest Grove neighbourhood, according to TransLink. The line would consist of five towers, up to 70 metres tall to support the cables. Tower locations have not yet been determined. TransLink began meeting with stakeholders in the area last fall, and awarded

the business case study to consulting firm CH2M Hill last winter. At this time, approximately 25,000 transit users go up Burnaby Mountain daily, according to TransLink’s data, with that number expected to increase to 40,000 by 2030. The gondola could possibly transport 3,000 or more people per hour, in half the time of the current bus trips, TransLink’s backgrounder on the project stated. The deadline for feedback is June 30. More information, and feedback forms, is available at http://bit.ly/eNWTtX. – with files from The Vancouver Sun and Sam Cooper, The Province

Nikkei Place continues to host fundraisers for Japan relief Ashley Owens staff reporter

Nikkei Place in Burnaby continues to host fundraising efforts for earthquake and tsunami relief in Japan. The centre has donated about $5,000 worth of event space to various groups to help them raise money, according to Sherri Kajiwara, acting executive director at Nikkei Place. She said that a recent concert benefit at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre has also been

a big contributor to relief funds. Kajiwara said the organizer of the concert, Linda Ohama, hoped to raise about $150,000 but her goals were surpassed by the collection of over $200,000 in donations. The Sixth Annual Nikkei Classic Golf Tournament that is set to take place on June 26 will also be setting aside partial proceeds for earthquake relief. The tournament host, Ken Yada said if they raise $25,000, he would like to see $10,000 go towards the Red

Cross Japan Tsunami/Earthquake Emergency Relief fund. “I know they need all the funds they can get,” he said. “We decided this would be a good gesture.” As a whole, Canada has managed to collect $30 million in donations, according to Bas Brusche, B.C. provincial manager of public affairs for Canadian Red Cross. He said B.C. has been particularly strong, with more than 700 community fundraising events in the Lower Mainland.

Hitchhiking marmot needs a ride home Jennifer Moreau

staff reporter

The Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. has a marmot on its hands that’s looking to hitch a ride to the Interior. The yellow-bellied marmot, whose sex has not been determined, presumably climbed into an Imperial Oil truck en route to the Lower Mainland from Kamloops. Once discovered upon arrival in Burnaby, the marmot was captured and brought to the Wildlife Rescue Association about a week ago. Yolanda Brooks, the association’s spokesperson, said the marmot is doing really well. “It’s healthy, it’s got a big appetite, it’s eating a lot of apples and yams at the moment,” she said, adding they want to get it back in the wild as soon as possible before it adjusts to “the good life” at the rehabilitation centre. Marmots aren’t often found in the Lower Mainland. They prefer rocky habitats and higher elevations, such as the Hope Slide area, and that’s why the association needs to return it to its natural habitat. Marmots are social animals, Brooks added, and it’s a “pretty lonely existence in the city.” This is not the first time the Burnaby-based association has seen a stowaway. Brooks said they get a few marmots annually. Last year, a man dis-

Brooks said they had to dismantle the truck to get to the marmot, whose paws were burnt. They nursed it back to health and released it by the Hope Slide area. “That’s generally how they get here – they hitch a ride,” Brooks said. “They like narrow places to sleep. This truck is probably stationary when they get on, and they get a bit of a shock when it takes off and they’re stuck until the truck stops again.” As for this year’s marmot, Brooks said it’ll be put

in a kennel and fed before the trip so the volunteer driver won’t have to worry about marmot maintenance or getting bitten while on the road. The association needs someone to take it up to Kamloops, where another volunteer will take the marmot on the final leg of the journey north before it is set free. Anyone heading to Kamloops with room for a furry passenger can call the Wildlife Rescue Association at 604-526-7275 and ask for Crystal Simmons, the sooner, the better. “The marmot is basically healthy and ready to go,” Brooks said.

Pet’s memory inspires new business Waterworkz Paw Spa offers warm water hydrotherapy and other doggie care Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

Tanya VanderHammen’s golden retriever, Bear, had to be put down about six years ago because of mobility problems. This led VanderHammen to train as a warm water therapist for dogs. She had just sold her debit machine sales business, and was trying to decide what she wanted to do, and knew it would be something to do with animals. “I went for my training, and bam,” she says, “of course, I fell in love with it.” VanderHammen runs Burnaby’s only warm water hydrotherapy spa for dogs. The Waterworkz Paw Spa is located in a large building off of Still Creek Avenue, with low lighting, a soft green and cream colour palette for the walls, and cedar wall panelling in the pool area. There are also offices for a massage therapist for dogs, and a holistic veterinarian. “I wanted everything under one roof,” VanderHammen explains. It took eight months to find the right building, she says, and another eight months to finish construction. Her husband learned everything necessary to install the pool, and they were careful to do everything necessary to prevent mould or mildew issues, as VanderHammen had seen at some water therapy spas in the States. There are about 25 to 30 water spas for dogs in the Seattle area, she says, but none that she knows of in Burnaby. “People tell me, ‘I’m so glad I found you,’” she says. VanderHammen has had the business for a year and a half now, and hopes to set a standard in the industry, she says. “It’s all about the dogs,” she adds. Dogs go for a swim in the 32-degree salt-based pool with VanderHammen first. She holds and supports the animals through their sessions. Warm water therapy helps with a variety of ailments including mobility issues, arthritis, depression and soft tissue dam-

The majority of dogs that come in because of arthritis achieve a noticeable difference in mobility after just one session, VanderHammen adds, and she has the testimonials from pet parents to back her up. Most clients come once a week, she says, and a lot of dogs come to prevent surgery. Bear, who had to be put down because he couldn’t walk anymore, has been her inspiration and appears in her logo. “I wanted to do for other people what no one could do for me,” she says, adding she hopes to give pet parents at least

six months to a year or longer with their dogs. She has another golden retriever, Jigs, who loves the spa, she says. Waterworkz brought on a holistic veterinarian, Dr. Susan Pollen. She offers homeopathy, nutritional information, acupuncture, exercise instruction and medication advice for dogs. “It’s a wonderful place,” she says of the spa, noting that when most animals go to a clinic, they’re quite anxious, but not at the spa. “Pets tend to smell, see and hear things at clinics that make them anxious,” she explains. “(But) animals truly feel safe

here.” “It is a place where there’s joy and playfulness,” Pollen adds. An animal massage practitioner, Jolena Kusec, has just joined the team, as well. Kusec was an equine massage therapist for about a decade, she says, and recently got her certification to work on dogs. Manipulating the soft tissue, particularly after dogs have had a swim in the warm water pool, really helps with mobility, Kusec says. Waterworkz can be found at 3831 Still Creek Ave. Go to waterworkzpawspa.com for more information.

Land for sale

Canada Safeway Ltd. is putting a 42-acre property in the Edmonds area up for sale. The site is close to transportation and transit hubs, according to a

release from the company, and the land is designated as multi-family. Actor and former Burnaby resident Michael J. Fox will be named to the Order of Canada during a ceremony today (May 27) at the Governor General’s residence. Fox is perhaps best known for playing Marty McFly in the Back to the Future movie series, but he is being honoured for advocacy for people who live with Parkinson’s disease, just as he has since being diagnosed in the early 1990s. Canadians also became familiar with the actor in the 1980s, while he was playing Alex P. Lions looking to expand Ashley Owens EDMONDS EXPRESS Sparing just a couple of hours can make a world of difference for struggling Burnaby residents. And no one knows that better than the Burnaby Edmonds Lions Club. "It's never enough," said Darshan Mann, president of the Burnaby Edmonds Lions Club. "There are people in the streets, there are people who don't have any housing. It's quite well received by them." Mann said that the organization is willing to help anyone in need. The club is intended to help the community in any way possible and members volunteer at schools, churches and even contribute to relief efforts overseas. Of the 19 volunteers that make up the group, about nine participate frequently in meetings and events. Meetings take place once per month on Wednesdays, lasting about two hours while members discuss finances, programs and events. "We just wish that we had more members and we could do some more," he said. The group is always looking for new members, who are welcome to attend the monthly meetings to see what the club is all about. The Lions Club participates and volunteers in the annual Edmonds City Fair as well as the annual Edmonds Santa Claus Parade. This year the city fair will take place on July 24. Mann said that at some of the schools

that the group supports, 20 to 30 kids were showing up with no meals. The Lions Club stepped in by providing funds. Hot dog sales have also been a part of fundraising efforts – an activity that does not raise much money, but is a way of promoting the club and providing for kids and anyone else who partakes. "We have families in our neighbourhood that need that kind of help so it's really appreciated," said Sheila MacTavish, community school coordinator at Stride Avenue Community School. She said the Burnaby Edmonds Lions Club will be participating in a back-to-school barbeque in September and the response from the school has been very favourable. Along with Stride Avenue, the club also contributes frequently to Edmonds Community School and Second Street Community School. The Burnaby-based group started in 2004 and is one of about 45,000 Lions Clubs worldwide. The Burnaby Edmonds Lions Club has had a few big projects on its hands over the years. From 2006 to 2007 the club managed to collect about 45,000 English books to send to China for the opening of new English libraries. Members have also worked with Canadian Red Cross by sending donations for disaster relief. "The club is small but energetic and it's fun," Mann said. "It's not a moneymaker thing or anything of that nature, it's always a give and the only thing you get in return is the satisfaction that you've done something for whoever. It's selfrewarding."

for a better insurance experience!

One survey reveals as many as 66% of condo owners may be underinsured!* Insuring a condominium unit is complicated by the fact that there are two parties involved: 1) you, the owner of the unit, and 2) the strata/condo corporation. Strata/ Condo Corporation’s Master Insurance policies provide coverage for the building and its common areas such as hallways, elevators, and swimming pools. However, there are many assets and situations that are simply not covered by the Strata/Condo Corporation’s Master Insurance policy. Let’s explore a few: Personal Property: Your personal property such as furniture, electronics, clothing and even your appliances are not covered under the Strata/Condo Master Insurance policy. Personal Liability: E.g. If someone slips on a wet bathroom floor in your unit and suffers injury or if you accidently leave a tap running which causes damage to the contents in the unit below, any claims brought against you would not be covered by the Strata/Condo Corporation’s Master Insurance policy. Deductible Assessments: Some strata/condo corporations purchase Master Insurance policies that have a high deductible (i.e. $10,000), for property claims. If you, a resident or visitor to your unit are considered responsible for the damage or loss, it is quite common for the strata/condo corporation to require you pay the entire deductible. Betterments and Improvements: The Strata/Condo Corporation’s Master Insurance policy provides coverage for the unit as it was originally built by the owner developer. Therefore, any upgrades to the unit by you or by previous owners, such as lighting fixtures, flooring, cabinets, countertops, etc., require your own coverage, referred to as “Betterments and Improvements.”

Additional Living Expenses: In the event of a valid claim that renders your condo uninhabitable for an extended period of time, you will be required to find alternate living accommodations. Renting a new temporary residence while still keeping up with the mortgage payments could prove financially impossible and Strata/Condo Corporation’s Master Insurance policies do not provide coverage for these additional living expenses. Therefore, it is essential that condo or townhouse unit owner’s purchase their own insurance coverage called a Condominium Unit Owner’s Insurance Policy to fill in the serious coverage gaps that exist when relying on the Strata/Condo Corporation’s Master Insurance policy alone. With an appropriate Condominium Unit Owner’s Insurance Policy you can protect yourself from all of the scenarios described above and more. Call or visit us with your condo insurance questions, we are here to help. *R.M. Insurance Survey

Edmonds clean-up fills a dumpster and a half Theresa McManus EDMONDS EXPRESS Rain didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of community members who took part in the recent cleanup in the Edmonds neighbourhood. Community members took to Edmonds Street May 7 as part of the Edmonds Business and Community Association’s annual spring cleanup. The cleanup takes place each spring and fall.

“We partner with them on that event. We focus on the SkyTrain station and upper part of Byrne Creek Ravine,” said Paul Cipywnyk, president of the Byrne Creek Streamkeepers. “Depending on how many volunteers show up, we go upstream and downstream.”

"It was a good turnout for the weather," said Ryan Meadows, the association's president. "I think we had 50 or 60 people. It was definitely wet, but a good turnout regardless"

Participants of the Edmonds Business and Community Association cleanup met at Gordon Presbyterian Church to register before hitting the street to pick up garbage along the commercial corridor. After a two-hour cleanup, they returned to church to enjoy a barbecue sponsored by Burnaby firefighters.

The Byrne Creek Streamkeepers offers a cleanup in conjunction with the association. While the group has its own registration area, its participants join up with the broader community at the barbecue.

This year’s event had a low turnout because of the rainy weather. About 10 volunteers turned out for the streamkeepers’ cleanup compared to about 30 in past years. “We still managed to fill a dumpster and one-half,” Cipywnyk said.

A large armchair, a double stroller, and remnants from a former homeless person’s camp (cardboard and tarps) were among the larger items found. The most common items were cigarette butts, followed by fast-food containers and the free newspapers that are handed out at SkyTrain stations.

Camp, glamour and kitsch are coming to the stage at the River Rock Show Theatre – and a Burnaby performer is in the lineup. Burnaby’s Devana DeMille joins the Vegasstyle drag show Fit for a Queen on June 4. The show is a fundraiser for the Shooting Stars Foundation, raising money for its work supporting agencies that help those suffering from HIV/AIDS. Devana has more than 20 years of performing experience, bringing her dance skills – with some help from a new choreog-

rapher – to the stage with some new performances. “Thank you for all the support over the years, and sit back, fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride!” she says in a press release. The cast includes Isolde n’ Barron, Sienna Blaze, Kristina Cash, Dame Hope Diamond, Aliyah Ice, Jaylene, Mandy Kamp, Kiki, Conni Smudge, Syren, Symone, Willie Taylor, Vivian Von BrokenHymen, Iona Whipp and an array of dancers. “Enter into the quicksilver world of lipstick, high heels and hilarity, and enjoy a grand celebration of

Lively City: Silk weaving continued from page 22

The studio is marking its 25-year milestone on June 2, and it’s holding a month-long show in June. The Silk and Silver show is launching with a reception on June 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. A press release notes that the studio began life in 1986, when former Burnabyite Diana Sanderson opened the Diana Sanderson Studio, a working studio and shop where visitors could watch the creation of handwoven silk cloth. Now, 25 years later, the studio features the work of seven weaving artists, with woven and knit silk garments and accessories on offer alongside jewelry by local artists. Besides working and mentoring other artists at the Vancouver studio, Diana has also taken her skills to the wider world – she has worked in Laos, bringing her expertise to a group that’s working to revive the weaving tradition among local women. The Silk Weaving Studio is at 1531 Johnston St. on Granville Island. Check out more details at www.silkweaving studio.com.

What makes a home? Artists explore ideas of home in cabaret at Shadbolt Centre An evening of entertainment exploring the idea of “home” is coming to the Shadbolt Centre next week. Comedians Brendan Beiser and Kristina Agosti will host the Home Sweet Home cabaret, which will feature a roster of performers who each have 15 minutes to encapsulate what home means to them. It’s onstage June 2 to 4, with 8 p.m. shows each night. The cabaret will feature commissioned monologues from Damian Rumph and Melanie Yeats. Rough House Productions will also offer a multimedia presentation from their

new show in English and Spanish, titled A Last Resort – which embarks on a voyage into humanity’s dreams of paradise. Also on the bill will be an excerpt from a new show, Project Corndog, with Tallulah Winkelman, Tom Jones, Sarah May Redmond and Chloe Doucet-Winkelman. The cabaret also features the stylings of the trio of Beth Southwell, Jesse Waldman and Lakewood, performing songs from Southwell’s latest CD. The show runs nightly at 8 p.m. in the Shadbolt’s Studio Theatre. Tickets for the June 2 opening night are $15 general admission. For June 3 and 4, it costs $30 regular, or $25 for students and seniors. Call the box office at 604-205-3000 or see tickets.shadboltcentre.com. www.twitter.com/juliemaclellan

SOFTBALL

Burnaby grad named all-region Burnaby Mountain Secondary grad Cassidy Lee finished her final year at Cal State University – San Bernardino with an allWest region honour. The senior pitcher for the women’s softball team earned a spot on the regional second team on May 19.

Lee was nearly unhittable at the NCAA West 2 region championships, posting a 3-0 record, including an upset win over defending champion and host Hawaii Pacific. Lee also posted backto-back shutouts over California Collegiate

Athletic Association champion and league rival Sonoma State to win the region final. “Cassidy was outstanding,” said head coach Tacy Duncan in an online CSUSB press release. “When we needed her to deliver, she did.”

Coaches: 2012 worlds in Finland continued from page 29

Loewen was named a Div. II All-American in his sophomore year at Limestone College to name but a few. “What we’re seeing in college is everybody is seeing the need (for players from Canada). You can’t teach what the box game develops. They all want one or two players. It’s good for Canadian lacrosse,” Brown said. Wray, who was part of Canada’s national u-19 field team in 1999, said the upcoming world championship could see a much more level playing field when the world’s best junior field teams meet in Turku, Finland in 2012. “I think at this championship you will see an Iroquois team and a Canadian team that will have every opportunity to win, and a U.S. team that has never been beaten in international competition before,” said Wray, who is going into his fifth year as defensive coach at Lehigh in Pennsylvania. “For us and myself, it’s an opportunity to do something that has never been done.” While daunting, the former Burnaby

juniors have a historical background from which to draw from, said Brown. “What I remember best about us was we were just real competitors. We weren’t the best skilled team but that group with Snider and T-Wray, I remember going into Victoria in Game 6 and taking it to them and then beating them again in our own barn,” Brown said. “(Snider and Wray) are both tough as nails and competitive, and that’s what we bring to this team. We bring a lot of passion and our competitiveness, and we’re going to demand a lot from these guys to bring a championship to Canada.” Wray and Snider were both playing members of Canada’s 2006 senior field team that upset the United States at the World championships in Hamilton. Snider was named the MVP following the goldmedal final. “2006 was as big an outcome as there has been for me, but to do it as a coach, with the Canadian team, would be right up there,” Wray said. The u-19 world championships will be held from July 12 to 21, 2012.

Junior Lakers fall down in third to Delta Burnaby dropped its fifth straight B.C. Junior Lacrosse League game, falling 9-6 to the second-place Delta Islanders in Ladner on Wednesday. The Lakers led 5-4 heading into the remaining 20 minutes, but gave up five straight goals before Jaxson Lee scored in the final moments. Mackenzie Davis opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the campaign, but the Islanders struck back with three in a row to take the lead. Colton Dow, who currently leads all Lakers with 11 goals, counted his first of two tallies on the night to close the deficit to a single goal later in the first period. First-year Laker Alex Millin scored twice in the middle frame and Dow counted his second to put the visitors ahead in a period that Burnaby dominated, outshooting Delta 18-8. Cancer June 21-July 22: The weeks ahead emphasize quietude, contemplation, solitude, lowered energy, particularly this Wednesday/ Thursday. Despite this, however, your social and optimistic side remains strong – especially Sunday to Tuesday. Your psychic and spiritual side emerges – so, hopefully, does your charitable side. This is a good time to contemplate your plans for the future, especially Sunday to Tuesday. June 4 begins 12 months of increased socializing, especially in your work environment. You might not feel the full effect of this until your birthday onward. Your energy bounces back Friday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The emphasis lies on wish fulfillment, social delights, light, friendly romance, optimism, the joy of living! Be ambitious Sunday to Tuesday. Soon (Saturday) you begin 12 months of super career luck. You’ll find bosses, parents and VIPs are more open to your ideas, willing to give you a boost up the ladder. Your creative, romantic and pleasure-loving side can help promote you and your ambitions. Midweek’s for social joys, entertainment and romance. Issue invitations. But retreat Friday/ Saturday – conditions are unstable Friday. Humour a “pushy” higher-up – until late June. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The weeks ahead bring pressure to perform and opportunities to enhance your status or prestige. Your career, relations with higher-ups and ambitions will occupy you. Until June 21, you might invest in a foreign country or international fund, etc. For this same three weeks, avoid legal hassles. Pay attention to Sunday through Tuesday – days when your mind will naturally drift toward the “larger questions,” toward international events, higher learning, compassion for all, and gentle love. This entire zone will be very luckily brought into prominence this June to next (2012).

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Letters, emails, reports, short literature, calls, visits, short trips, errands, paperwork – these fill your life, especially midweek. The week is busy but not terribly important. Money themes continue, mostly good ones. Money might really rush toward you now to June 21 – but beware, you could spend it just as swiftly, or spend even more than comes. Bank it, be tight-fisted! Saturday (June 4) begins a year of grand money luck, especially in earnings and selling items. (Early hints of this Sunday/Monday, when all’s well in dollar-land.) Focus on home, children Friday/Saturday. Taurus April 20-May 20: The weeks ahead feature money, earnings and spending, possessions, memory, rote learning, and sensuality. All these, by June 4 onward will “tweak” or more deeply, give birth to, significant and beneficial “heavy money” situations. Heavy money = investments, mortgages, financial partnerships, dealings with other people’s money, inheritance: generally any money that is big, shared and intended to grow. (E.g., a car will not grow in value, but land often does.) Your charm and magnetism soar Sunday/Monday: impress someone! Money, midweek – beware a false idea. Speak humbly Friday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Congratulate yourself – you’re on top, winning! Your energy and charisma are climbing (and will increase more next week). Impress someone, seek attention, start significant projects, tackle formerly daunting tasks. Rest and plan and deal with government or head office Sunday-Tuesday.Then plunge into brave action Tuesday eve to Thursday. You might need to choose between your personal drives and a career/reputation situation. Either choice is OK: base it on your stage of life. Be cautious with money Friday: spend Saturday. Saturday begins 12 months of relative quietude: be patient.

May 29 - June 4, 2011

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: A mellow, understanding mood flows over you this week and the next two (especially this midweek). Study abstract subjects, religion, philosophy – any higher learning – or to write, travel afar or handle legal matters. You might meet love. Sunday to Tuesday contains mysteries – look beneath surface appearances. Your sexual and financial instincts awaken. It’s a superb time to go for a health diagnostic, change your lifestyle, or make a commitment. All these things (from mysteries to sex to finances) face huge luck from June 4 to mid-2012. Your life is about to change! Caution Friday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Late May and June draw you into life’s depths. Mysteries, secrets, large financial manoeuvres, investments, sexual urges, lifestyle commitments draw you, especially midweek. Study this area for a clue to fortunate action, projects in the year-long phase between June 2012 and July 2013. Until then, though, play this area lightly. (Actually, if you’re planning that far ahead, mark July/August of 2012 as “highly questionable.”) Your true luck, for the immediate 12 months ahead, begins this Saturday: you’ll find it in relationships of every stripe. You might relocate, or marry! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The emphasis lies on relationships, relocation, agreements, contracts, negotiation, opportunities, competition, challenge, opposition, litigation, especially midweek. You’ll receive the positive side of these if you’re diplomatic, eager to please and a team-player. The negative needs no explanation. But one note: in general, it’s better not to vigorously pursue either side, now to August 2012. A Gemini might play a key role. You’ll accomplish a lot of work Sunday/Monday. Work will expand strongly now to mid-2012. Learn to relax! Invest or offer intimacy Saturday, NOT Friday!

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Lots of work faces you, especially midweek, when a new chore could begin. Better plunge in these few weeks, as a major romantic, pleasure-oriented or “happy venture” phase begins very soon, and will last for 12 months. You’ll want to be relatively free of restricting duties by then. (In late June, a powerful relationship influence starts, bringing romantic urges to a tempting climax.) In fact, this romantic phase has already started, in minor ways. Sunday to Tuesday contain some tantalizing urges! Careful with relationships Friday. One affair might end, another start – soon. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The weeks ahead feature romance, creativity, pleasure, vacation, sports and games and successful risks. Something might start in a very small way in these areas midweek – something that can grow in future. But a lot of emphasis remains in your area of home, domesticity, security and children (especially early week). You have to avoid friction or sharp words here (or anywhere near a cafe or kitchen – watch cuts and burns, too) through June 20. On June 4, a year of luck begins in these areas: home, children, real estate, retirement, new beginnings. A new home? Caution Friday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The emphasis lies on your home, security, children, nourishment, on Mother Nature, retirement, endings and beginnings. A minor new phase or project might begin in these areas midweek. Usually this phase (late May to late June) creates a restful, sluggish mood designed to give you a mid-year rejuvenation. But this time a lot of errands, trips, visits, calls and paperwork keep you busy. June 4 starts a year in which your career will involve a lot of running around and communicating. Romance disappoints Friday, flows smoothly Saturday. One met before Friday isn’t compatible. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
