Tiny feet (and tails) plague city Residents say they’ve never seen so many rats in Metrotown neighbourhood

Rats in Burnaby are a major problem, from Metrotown to North Burnaby, according to some local residents. The NOW was contacted by residents throughout the city after Wednesday’s article on the rat problem near Metrotown. “After dinner we go for walks, and we frequently see fairly large rats either live or as road kill in our area,” Barb Andreis, who lives near Central Park, wrote in an email. “My husband walks home from Joyce SkyTrain station, and someone in that area also feeds the birds, so it’s very common to see rats under the tracks.” Tom McCafferty, another Burnaby resident, posted a YouTube video of a large rat he saw on a bus bench in North Burnaby, near Kitchener Elementary School, in the early evening hours of June 15. The problem in South Burnaby was brought forward to council on Monday night by Craig Wilson. Wilson has lived in Burnaby for 34 years and says he has never seen the rat problem as bad as it is now. “I’ve noticed it for about five years, but for the past two it’s been an epidemic,” he said. He said he’d seen many rats in spots in the Metrotown area, including the Beresford Street parkway, Metrotown SkyTrain station, and Central Park. The problem in South Burnaby along the Beresford Park strip was brought Rats Page 3

Police investigators are investigating a suspicious fire at a construction/renovation site in the Buckingham Heights neighbourhood on Wednesday morning. According to Darrell Smith, assistant fire chief for the Burnaby Fire Department, the fire at the unoccupied renovation site between 7517 and 7529 Lambeth Dr. started around 6 a.m. Wednesday. While firefighters fought the blaze, several investigators from the Burnaby RCMP also arrived at the scene on Wednesday morning. “The fire appears to be suspicious in nature,” Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk of the Burnaby RCMP told the Burnaby NOW on Thursday morning. “We are the primary investigators on this case, and our arson investigators are looking at it. The initial outlook is the fire looks suspicious.” Smith said the fire department had five engines, two ladder trucks, a rescue truck and the command centre on site for the fire, with more than 30 firefighters working to put out the blaze. “When crews arrived, the original house, that was gone, but we noticed that the house next door was on fire, and we had our crews start trying to save that building,” said Smith. The house at 7517 Lambeth Dr. did sustain some extensive damage to its exterior. “We had to wake up the people inside that residence, and we did get them out safely,” said Smith. “Nobody was hurt.” On the other side of the fire, at 7529 Lambeth Dr., the house sustained no damage. In addition, flying embers from the fire also landed on two adjacent houses, so fire trucks were sent to contain those incidents. “We got everything under control in about one-and-a-half hours,” said Smith.

Climbing in memory of Jeremy Jeremy Chen was 30 years old and a non-smoker when lung cancer claimed lis life Jennifer Moreau staff reporter
What started as a mild cough ended in a fatal case of lung cancer for Burnaby resident Jeremy Chen. In a matter of four months, the seemingly healthy non-smoking 30-year-old had passed away, and his story serves as a reminder of the need for more research and treatment for one of Canada’s most deadly diseases. Last December, Chen was feeling short of breath and had developed a mild cough. His doctor thought it was bronchitis until the symptoms worsened. After an X-ray and further testing, Chen found out he had lung cancer. His wife was devastated. “Jeremy was only 30 years old. He was a healthy man, with a good job and a happy life,” said Scarlett Chen. “It was almost impossible to process what the doctors were saying. Jeremy never smoked, and neither did anyone in his family. There was no history of exposure to harmful toxins.” Chemotherapy didn’t help as he grew weaker and the cancer spread to his liver. By the end of March, he was dead. In 2011, an estimated 25,300 Canadians will be diagnosed with lung cancer and 20,600 will die from it, according to the B.C. Lung Association. Most cases are related to smoking, but 10 to 15 per cent are nonsmokers like Jeremy. Smoking-related lung cancer usually hits people in their 60s and 70s, but non-smokers can get it in their 30s and 40s. Doctors often do not suspect lung cancer in non-smokers, so by the time it is diagnosed it can be too late. While researchers have identified some possible causes – secondhand smoke, radioactive radon gas or asbestos, for instance – more work is needed, according to the lung association. “We have a lot to learn, and more investment in research is desperately needed. While progress has been made, we need

And we need effective screening technologies that will detect lung cancer in the early stages, when more can be done for the patient,” said Dr. Menn Biagtan, the association’s program manager. “Sadly, lung cancer – the leading cancer killer in Canada – doesn’t get enough attention. People with lung cancer are commonly assumed to have brought it upon themselves by smoking. And the 10 to 15 percent of patients who have never
smoked are tarred with the same brush,” she added. To honour his memory, Jeremy’s family, friends and co-workers participated in the B.C. Lung Association’s Stairclimb for Clean Air fundraiser in February. Proceeds from the event fund lung research, advocacy and education programs. At the time, Jeremy was well enough to attend the event with Scarlett and their 14-month-old son Xavier. “I know how happy Jeremy was to be there and how much he appreciated his
friends’ efforts,” Scarlett said. “It made him feel really good to know the money contributed to the B.C. Lung Association on his behalf could help lead to a better prognosis for future lung cancer patients. And it comforts me to think his story could serve a purpose.” Jeremy’s supporters raised more than $60,000 – the most ever donated by a single team in the event’s 10-year history. Jeremy’s former employer, TSI Terminal Systems Inc., donated $30,000, and CP Rail and CN Rail donated $10,000 each.

forward to council previously, by a delegation in June 2009. This led to council banning bird feeding in Burnaby parks, but not on private property. City staff was first contacted with complaints of people overfeeding birds in May 2009. They posted signage asking people not to feed the birds, but kept getting complaints. Staff met with the birdfeeder that seemed to be the source of the problem in 2009. She 6

said she would stop once she ran out of bird food, but complaints still kept coming in. Residents in the area reported buildings covered with bird feces, noise from the birds and more rats and mice. The city does not have any bylaws prohibiting people from feeding wildlife in local parks. Council said city staff would look into the problem, working with Fraser Health on the issue, as well as speaking with TransLink about how to deal with the problem on TransLink’s property, along the
SkyTrain route. Drew Snider, a spokesperson with TransLink, said the problem is people feeding the birds and leaving garbage in the area. “It’s not so much a rat problem as a people problem,” Snider said in an interview Wednesday. “What happens is, we take care of the garbage and make sure the garbage is all picked up and so forth, but there are some people in particular who go to this location just east of Metrotown station and leave

birdseed for pigeons,” he explained. However, TransLink doesn’t have enforcement powers in the area to prevent bird feeding, he said, as Burnaby doesn’t have a bylaw against feeding wildlife. “It’s a bit complicated as to who is responsible there,” he said, mentioning Vancouver’s Park Board has a bylaw against feeding wildlife. TransLink is looking into putting up a sign, Snider said, but added it wouldn’t have any enforcement clout. Twitter.com/janayafe

Skyward? A conceptual drawing from Canada Safeway Ltd. shows highrises – but the community plan doesn’t allow for highrises in the area. But Kellsey said the design would be up to the developer, who would have to work within the city’s bylaws and requirements. “We presented a marketing plan on our website as well as to any potential purchasers of the site,” she said, “(with) a variety of conceptual drawings as well as options and suggestions.” “But we’ve also made it extremely clear to all interested parties, including the City of Burnaby, that certainly it would be up to the new owners of that property to work directly with the city, cooperatively, to ensure the best possible development for that 42acre site,” Kellsey added. This is something any
developer would be well aware of, she said. While there were previous industrial activities on the site, including underground fuel storage tanks, the company removed the tanks and undertook phase 1 and 2 detailed site investigations, completing a full remediation of the site before putting the property up for sale, Kellsey said. However, any remediation required after the sale would be the responsibility of the new owner, she added. The site was operated by Summit Logistics from 1996 to 2011, but Safeway ended its agreement with the company in February. Bids are being accepted up until July 5.

The sky’s the limit for a large multi-family development in the Edmonds area, but exactly how high in the sky is up to Burnaby’s city council. Canada Safeway Ltd. has put the 42-acre property – next to its Lucerne milk plant – in the Edmonds area up for sale. “It is very unique in that it’s the largest undeveloped piece of property in the area,” Betty Kellsey, the public affairs manager for Canada Safeway, said in a phone interview Thursday. The site is within about 800 metres of the Edmonds SkyTrain station, she added, and is surrounded by the Edmonds residential neighbourhood. “We believe it really offers an incredible opportunity to a future developer to take this parcel of land and turn it into a beautiful residential area,” she said. The property is being sold as one parcel, Kellsey said. The site was a distribution centre for the company for 40 years. It lies between 11th and 14th avenues, and 15th and 18th streets. While Safeway has not specified to develop-

ers what the multi-family development should look like, Burnaby’s mayor responded to the company’s marketing materials – which included a graphic with highrise buildings as a possible concept – with a notice in The Vancouver Sun on June 22. “To clarify, this Safeway vision is not consistent with the city’s adopted plan for the area, and was not shared with city council or staff prior to its release,” said the notice, signed by Derek Corrigan. “In fact, the site is currently zoned industrial and the city’s counciladopted community plan for the Edmonds town centre designates it for lowrise multi-family residential redevelopment.” Corrigan did not respond to repeated requests for an interview on the subject before press time. None of Safeway’s print materials specifically refer to the possibility of highrise development, though a press release from the company did mention the view potential. “This site offers the opportunity for development of apartments, townhouses or luxury penthouses that would have mountain and city views,” the release stated.

The hardest part of it all is trying to understand potential impacts of extinguishing or not extinguishing the HST – far more difficult than the actual referendum question itself. The government has had nearly a year to explain, and it still hasn’t done so sufficiently. Premier
Christy Clark’s eleventh-hour manipulations to convince taxpayers to vote “No” have served to make it still more difficult to calculate ramifications. And has Opposition leader Adrian Dix got a hidden agenda for the PST? Or is that more B.C. Liberal hype? It’s expected to take weeks to count the referendum ballots – results aren’t expected to be announced before Aug. 11. Here’s hoping the results are as confusing as the question – and not as confusing as the politicians have made it.
First spectator sport was a riot IN MY OPINION Matthew Claxton
T
he jerseys have been folded away, the flags have been removed from car windows, and the Green Men have rolled up their spandex suits until next fall. After that outpouring of fannish energy for the Canucks, I was inspired to write about the first spectator sport that worked its fans into a lather. How far back do we have to go to find a team sport that combined passion, high pay, violence, and occasional riots the way modern hockey does? Farther than you might think. The concept of modern team sports was essentially invented (or reinvented – I’ll get to that later) by the Victorians, who then spread their ideas around the world by conquering bits of it. The Victorians gave formal rules to sports that had begun as rough peasant games. At first, many of these were intended as activities for gentlemen. In other words, you were supposed to do them for the sake of manly competition, healthy exercise, and so that you
would be fit enough to beat the tar out of some other nationality’s menfolk. But people liked watching them. The mass media spread the glory of winners far and wide. So professionals, usually from working-class backgrounds, dominated the sports, driving out the upper-class amateurs. Much the same thing had happened more than 2,000 years before. The sport wasn’t polo or soccer, it was chariot racing. Like modern cycle racing, it was a team sport with an individual winner. During the Roman era, two competing teams, the Reds and the Whites, arose. By the later imperial era, and during the Byzantine Empire, they were joined by the Blues and the Greens, which soon became dominant factions. The races were brutal. Drivers from the same team worked together to put the best driver in position to win. Forcing an opponent to crash into the stone pillars in the centre of the arena was an acceptable tactic. Drivers were tied to their horses, so if their chariot crashed they had just seconds to slice through their reins with a knife, or be dragged or trampled to death. Few professional charioteers lived long enough to retire, and most were slaves.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR School policy is divisive Dear Editor:
Some statements that were made and attitudes that prevailed following the adoption of policy 5.45 by the board has prompted my response. I feel that those who have presented moral and religious objections to the policy have been unfairly singled out and attacked. Supporters of the LGBTQ community were holding up a huge banner at a rally in front of the school board offices on the night the policy was adopted with the words: “We apologize for what the Church has done to the LGBTQ community.” Without questioning the propriety of such a sign being permitted on the premises, it is clear that this will create divisiveness, which policy 6.40 (on race

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR New policy is redundant continued from page 6
the policy. I am not so sure that that attitude will eschew divisiveness among people who hold different views. God forbid that he is not infringing a policy that he himself helped to create (policy 6.40). It is wrong and unfair to conclude that being against the policy is being against the LBGTQ community. There is a difference between acceptance of the group and approval of their sexual orientation, identity or what have you. I have written before expressing my view that the policy is redundant and reiterates the goals of policies 5.10 and 6.40, which I still firmly adhere to. After all is said and done it is my hope that the people of our community and schools can live in harmony in spite of differences in sexual orientation and beliefs, so that we can together move forward and respond to other critical needs in education. Step in the right direction
Dear Editor:
Re: Home is sweet, compared to Cuba, In My Opinion, Burnaby NOW, June 10. I wouldn’t want to frighten Jennifer Moreau by saying I consider us to be “kindred spirits” in our political philosophies, but it is always satisfying to see a movement towards political or ideological reciprocity. Thus it was most refreshing to see that first small step on the Damascene road to enlightenment. That said, I suspect she will sense some chastisement from her fellow travellers on the left. First, I am impressed that she, as a member of the mainstream media, admits to being an “activist” of sorts, even if this is an editorial view. I have learned too, some interesting
facts that, though noble, are as impossible to enforce here as there, i.e. the sharing of house work in such a machismo society; and there may be some practices we may want to emulate – the death penalty for drug-related crimes. I am not, on the other hand surprised to hear that HIV/AIDS rates are so low, given homosexuality is so heavily repressed. (We recall this being a reason for Svend Robinson’s lover being allowed to jump the immigration wait line, though he never explained why he spent his (our) hardearned money in a country with such homophobic policies.) I suppose it was because it was such a workers’ paradise! He is not alone in his naivete here; I recall Carole King crooning You’ve Got a Friend to the dictator, and who can forget that it was Pierre Trudeau who let this murderer dandle his children and put his arm around his young wife? Still her observations are a step in the right direction, even coming as late as this. The “successes” she speaks of must be framed in the understanding that literacy is of little use in a country that allows only certain literature to be read, and only certain concepts to be aired. Also, she sticks to the belief that there is such a thing as “free health care and education.” A quick search of the Internet would show pictures covertly taken of the insides of the “people’s” health-care system (not what tourists and party apparatchiks have access to) where people are lying in their own excrement, and educators who could only dream of making half of what teachers in this country make, never mind that striking for better benefits, wages, classsizes etc., would likely lead to imprisonment if attempted. In short, there is nothing “free” under the sun.

Sports: A walk through history continued from page 6
But they were slaves who could rise high and become wealthy beyond measure. One of the most famous was Gaius Appuleius Diocles, who accumulated 35,863,120 sesterces in prize money in the second century. One professor, Peter Struck, noted that this was enough money to fund the entire Roman army for more than two months. He compared that to the amount needed to fund the U.S. Army for the same time – $15 billion. While not a perfect comparison, that would make
Diocles the best-paid athlete in history, period. Partisans of the Blues and Greens became split between different social classes, and Byzantine emperors publicly supported one team or the other. The Emperor Justinian supported the Blues; his wife Theodora was a commoner whose father had been an animal trainer for the faction. They almost fell victim to the partisanship of the hippodrome. In 532 AD, unhappy with high taxes, the Blues and Greens both started a week-long riot
(called the Nika Riot; Nika means “victory” or “conquer”) and a siege of the palace in Constantinople, after a chariot race. The riot ended when a popular general bribed the Blue leaders with a literal big bag of money. The Greens were slaughtered. The Nika Riots burned half a city to the ground and almost toppled an empire. Kind of puts the Stanley Cup in perspective. Room honours McGeachie The City of Burnaby plans to officially dedicate the Pixie McGeachie Reading Room at the Burnaby archives on September 24. The ceremony is scheduled to take place from 2 to 4 p.m. in the public programming room next to the archives, located in the McGill branch of the Burnaby Public Library. The event will be by invitation only, as space is limited, with members of council, the community heritage commission, the Burnaby Historical Society and McGeachie’s family in attendance. The cost of the ceremony, and the design and manufacturing of the bronze dedication plaque is estimated at $2,500 and is expected to be covered by the heritage commission’s 2011 budget. In March, council approved plans to dedicate the reading room to McGeachie, a Burnaby historian who passed away last August. McGeachie wrote five books on the history of Burnaby, including her first, Bygones of Burnaby – an Anecdotal History, which contains the stories of Burnaby’s last living pioneers. Her last book, Burnaby Scrapbook: An Anecdotal History of Burnaby, was published in 2009. She was given Burnaby’s Citizen of the Year Award
in 2002 and won the Ruby Nobbs Award from Heritage B.C. in 2008. McGeachie was also honoured with the B.C. Historical Federation’s Certificate of Merit. She was behind the Friends of Interurban 1223 project, which restored one of the last interurban trams. McGeachie helped establish Burnaby’s Heritage Centre in 1971. She also served as president of the Burnaby
Historical Society, from 1991 to ‘93, and was a community archivist with the society before the city started its own archives. She served six terms on Burnaby’s community heritage commission. She was also a reporter and editor with the Burnaby Examiner. McGeachie passed away on Aug. 14, 2010 from heart failure. The historian was 88 years old. – Janaya Fuller-Evans

Parents’ group challenges policy Letter encourages parents to pull their kids out of class over moral objections Jennifer Moreau staff reporter
Parents’ Voice, a group against the Burnaby school district’s new antihomophobia policy, is circulating a letter encouraging parents to pull their kids out of class over moral objections. The letter is the latest in an ongoing controversy over policy 5.45, which is designed to protect staff and students from homophobic bullying and harassment.
Parents’ Voice claims the policy infringes on their rights to educate their children according to their moral beliefs. The letter requests alternative delivery for all curriculum that may undermine parents’ moral convictions regarding “non-heterosexual inclinations and/or behaviours.” “Our deeply held beliefs hold as an ideal the concept of the family as founded on the lifelong commitment of one man and one woman to one another in marriage and on their commitment to the welfare of their children. Furthermore, our deeply held beliefs hold that human sexuality is realized in a truly human way only if it is an integral part of the
love by which a man and woman commit themselves to one another in marriage,” the letter states. “Nothing taught to our child in the school should undermine our beliefs, nor cause our child to question the moral teaching of our family. The school should seek to protect all children entrusted to it and to the best of its ability protect all from harassment, but it shall in no way teach our child concepts of the family or human sexuality that diverge from our moral convictions.” The letter was sent out through the group’s email list and includes instructions, recommending parents make multiple copies, get principals Letter Page 10

Teen stabbed in North Burnaby
A 17-year-old boy was stabbed with a knife on the afternoon of June 2 in North Burnaby. At approximately 5 p.m., the teenager was walking alone on the Burnaby Mountain urban trail in the area of Union Street and Duthie Avenue when he was approached by three men. The men demanded that the teen give them his “stuff.” When he refused, one of the men lunged at him with a knife and slashed his right shoulder. Once the men realized they had wounded the boy, they fled, running north towards Union Street. They did not manage to steal anything during the attack. After the attack, the teen patched himself up at a nearby friend’s place and eventually made his way to the Royal Columbian Hospital with the help of a Good Samaritan he met on the SkyTrain. He was treated for
a knife cut on his shoulder and released. The suspects were all described as darkskinned and between 5-6 to 6 feet tall. The first one was wearing dark blue baggy jeans with a colourful design on the back pockets, black sneakers, a white hat with a flipped-up brim and a black jacket with diamond tribal patterns on the front. He also had big diamond earrings in each ear. The second man was wearing black track pants with either a white or grey strip down the leg and an overly baggy red sweater with a hood. He had black hair combed into a faux-hawk. The third man is only described as wearing a grey sweater. Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call the Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922.

Life and love in two generations Burnaby resident makes directorial debut with Three Days of Rain at Studio 16 Stefania Seccia staff reporter
Utilizing light to create space and two generations to tell a story, the Ninja Pirates Theatre Society is presenting Three Days of Rain by Richard Greenberg. Burnaby resident Victor Ayala is making his directorial debut with the production, which opens on June 28 and stars Anthony Shim, James Pizzinato and Kendra Anderson. The story follows two generations of one family taking place in the 1960s and 1995. In the first act, the children of two architect parents try to piece together their parents’ love story in 1995. Then in the second act, it flashes to 1960 where the audience witnesses the parents’ life together. “The kids are looking back on their parents’ life,” Ayala explained, in a phone interview on his way to a rehearsal. “Then we see the parents’ love story.” The play touches on subjects ranging from mental illness to physical impediments and carrying pain from the past into the present. Overall, it’s a story about overcoming hardships. “The play drew us in because we’re in our 20s, right when we’re starting to feel like adults,” Ayala said. “We’re starting to look at our parents and ask, ‘What was it like for them?’” The script is a challenging portrayal, incorporating characters who are related over two generations, for the actors who will have to illustrate their skill set. The cast members actual age range is from 17 to 28. “Although they are playing roles that are intended for older actors, these actors are at a point where they are entering a new stage in their lives so that they are able to bring forward the maturity that is

When he read the script for the first time, Ayala knew they had to make it happen. “We were really responsive to (the script),” he added. “When we first finished reading the script, you feel like you’ve grown up a little bit.” One of Ayala’s favourite aspects of the script is its ability to show love in the face of imperfect relationships of different
types. “(People will) have a better appreciation for family,” he noted. “We invite people to bring their parents out. It’s more of an adult play.” Ayala suggests taking your parents out to dinner afterwards because you might walk away with a new perspective. “The play gives you an appreciation for who these people are, even though you’ve known them for all your life,”
Ayala said. “The play has got very beautiful dialogue.” The performance will have unique lighting patterns and a set featuring 1960s architecture. “The play deals with the concept of life and death, it deals with architecture,” he said. “Because we’re using light to create space, it has an ethereal effect: here one minute and then it’s gone.”

On June 28, the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts’ James Cowan Theatre will play host to El Jaleo (The Shout) presented by Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy. “The dance recital features students from four years old to 55 years old,” said Kasandra La China, of her dance company’s upcoming performance night. “It’s a good way to close the year.” The show features students from the academy, professional
musicians and dancers. “It’s been eight to nine years since we’ve performed in Burnaby,” La China noted. The academy began in 2002, but La China has taught flamenco in Burnaby since 1998. “It’s a nice community thing,” La China said. “We have students from Surrey, White Rock area and lots are from Burnaby. Everybody’s doing fun things.” La China also said it’s a great way for students to exhibit what they’ve learned on the stage platform. The program includes Bulerias de los Niños, Tangos por Fiesta, Soleares, Garrotin and much more traditional, spirited performances. “It’s all types of flamenco songs, such as Solea, which is
about a lonely man, Mr. Solitude,” La China said. “We’ll also feature a famous song from a class dancing with sombreros.” La China will also be doing a special performance as part of the moving force that is flamenco dance. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www. mozaicoflamenco.com. The performance is June 28, starting at 7 p.m., and tickets are $22.50 for adults, $19 for students and seniors and $12 for kids 12 and under. Tickets are also available at the Shadbolt Centre box office, 604-205-3000. Check out the Burnaby NOW’s Facebook page at www.facebook. com/BurnabyNOW to find out how you can win two tickets to the performance.

With the play around the corner, Ayala said they’re fine-tuning little things, but nothing’s ever “perfect, perfect.” “Everybody is ready,” he said. “There’ve been quite beautiful moments in the rehearsals right now.” The society is composed of young actors committed to encouraging new audiences to enjoy what the stage has to offer. Previous projects include Beyond Therapy and This is Our Youth. At the end of the day, it’s about creating great theatre.

Celebrate Canada Day in the city By Stefania Seccia
Shelton Burgie enjoys a hot dog for lunch at last year's festivities
The parade will be complete with a bagpiper and colour party, but it's not the only activity to look out for. "There's a few new entertainging groups," Pleshakov added. "The Temples are a youth choir with vision impairment." Children can also take part in heritage games, face painting and watch entertainer Marc-Andre Lafleur. Lafleur is a famous circus entertainer, comedian and juggler who's known for his performances in the Lower Mainland. Adults can enjoy music by Celticalia or dance to the North Shore Celtic Ensemble beats. The ensemble is composed of a culturally diverse group using strings, percussion and wind instruments. It performs lively original compositions and arrangements of Celtic-based music. Academie Duello is back to impress the crowds with their swords. It's an international centre and school of European swordplay and Western martial arts. "It's the largest Canada Day at the Burnaby museum this year," Terelle Wong, marketing assistant at the city, said. "All the volunteers on staff will be dressed up in costume." The Burnaby Art Gallery is also inviting the attendees to grab a paintbrush and create a colourful masterpiece. Throughout the day, Footlight Theatre will also perform Vaudeville Varieties at noon, 1, 3 and 4 p.m. Canada's birthday cake will be served at 2:30 p.m. Prepare to be amazed by the Living Statues, who always have a few tricks up their sleeves. End the day with Tradition, who will perform a series of French Canadian dances. For more information on the day's events visit www.burnabyvillagemuseum.ca.
The Burnaby community will be abuzz on Canada Day from picnicing in small parks, paddling on the lake or watching a parade. The Burnaby Village Museum is the official hot spot for all things Canada Day this year. "Last year we had 8,500 people attend," said Sanya Pleshakov, the museum's program coordinator. "With that number, you feel like you're with and a p art of the community." With the backdrop of the 1920s, the village will be hosting a plethora of entertainment such as a parade, musicians, a vintage car display and RCMP officers in their red serge uniforms. Admission is free for the day and carousel rides are only $2. "One of the highlights is our photos theme this year," Pleshakov added. There will be photo displays, such as the one from the Burnaby Photographic Society, who will be showcasing its pictures of the museum. There will also be photo stops for people to stop and take a photo in. "We'll have a pioneer family from Burnaby's past," Pleshakov said. "People can stop and take a photo and pose with a pioneering family." But, since it's also the museum's 40th anniversary, there will be a living room set up from the 1971 era, complete with shag carpeting and a fringe lamp. Along with the photo stops, participants are encouraged to bring their cameras along to pose with the Burnaby RCMP detachment dressed in their red serge uniforms as well. "It's our own special way of celebrating," Pleshakov said of the July 1 event.

Name that lichen HERE & NOW
I
Jennifer Moreau
f you have ever dreamed of a lichen species with your namesake, now’s your chance to achieve immortality. Naming rights for two recently discovered species of lichen are up for grabs to the highest bidder. It’s all part of a fundraiser for The Land Conservancy of B.C., a non-profit habitat protection group, and the Ancient Forest Alliance, which focuses on saving B.C.’s old-growth forests. Botanical researcher Trevor Goward discovered the two species of lichen in recent years. The organizations have auctions running on their websites, and as of press time, the going bid for TLC’s lichen was $3,000. Lichens are often mistaken for plants, but they are actually small organisms born of a symbiotic relationship between alga and fungus. They usually grow on trees and rocks. The Ancient Forest Alliance is auctioning off a horsehair lichen, which (according to a rather poetic press release) “forms elegant black tresses on the branches of old growth forests,” while The Land Conservancy is selling a type of crottle lichen, which consists of “strap-like lobes, pale grayish above and
black below.” As Goward points out, the modern system of classification has been around for three centuries, and the names of those attached to plants are still with us today. “With any luck, your name will endure as long as our civilization does. Not even Shakespeare could hope for more than that,” says the internationally acclaimed lichenologist. To make a bid, call the TLC office at 1-877-4852422 or visit the Ancient Forest Alliance website at www.ancientforestalliance. org. The auction closes on Sept. 10, 2011. Let’s hope some botanical enthusiasts win, so these lichens are not left with names
like Exxon helveticum or Microsoftus sulcata for all eternity.

Awareness day shines light on lymphedema Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
Despite its obvious physical appearance, lymphedema is a difficult condition for doctors to recognize, according to Lucette Wesley, president of the B.C. Lymphedema Association. To change that, the association is holding its second annual Lymphedema Day event at the British Columbia Institute of Technology to educate medical professionals and others about the condition. Lymphedema is a condition where lymph – protein-rich fluid – gathers in the limbs, or sometimes other parts of the body such as the face or groin. “A lot of people can feel alone with this condition,” Wesley says. It generally only affects one limb. The resulting swelling can cause pain, decreased mobility and even wounds, if not cared for properly. Elephantitis is a chronic, severe version of the condition. There are two kinds of lymphedema – a congenital condition passed down genetically, which usually shows up in infancy, or secondary lymphedema, which can occur after damage to the lymphatic system. “Lots of people who have cancer develop lymphedema, and especially those with breast cancer,” Wesley says. “People who’ve had cancer and have been free of the cancer for years, and think, ‘Hey I’m past it,” she said, “and then they get lymphedema, and now they’re stuck for life. It’s a condition that never goes away.” Doctors often don’t know much about
it, Wesley says, making it difficult to get a correct diagnosis. “Sometimes it starts off with very mild swelling, and that’s the problem,” she explains. “They often don’t know what causes it, and there’s no easy way to test it.” There is no diagnostic test for the condition. Those with lymphedema often work with massage practitioners, and use compression garments to keep the swelling down. It is very costly and time-consuming, according to Wesley. “There are people who have to spend two hours a day putting on their compression bandages,” she says. The association hopes to educate people, particularly doctors, about the condition, Wesley says. To that end, the registered non-profit is hosting a Lymphedema Awareness Day event at BCIT this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will include an address from keynote speaker Dr. Neil Piller, the director of the Lymphedema Assessment Clinic in Australia, as well as forums for health-care professions and for patients on how to approach self-care. The event includes a breakfast and buffet lunch. The Lymphedema Awareness Day event is being sponsored by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s B.C. and Yukon branch, with a $5,000 donation. Those interested in attending can register online until Friday at www.bclymph. org. The cost is $30 for members of the association and $40 for non-members. Second-year Burnaby Laker forward Trevor Moore was recently named an All-American honourable mention for a second consecutive season in NCAA Division I field lacrosse. Moore, a senior captain at Robert Morris University, became the school’s first All-American in program history last year. He was also named the Northeast conference player of the year for a second straight time. “I just took advantage of all the opportunities I got,” said Moore, who currently has eight goals in eight games with the Western Lacrosse Association Lakers. “I took a shot when I had to and luckily they went in when they did.” The Port Coquitlam native led the nation with 3.33 goals per game, while scoring a single-season school record 50 tallies. He also bettered his own school record for total points with 61 this season. The 5-10 RMU attackman placed fifth in the NCAA and first in the NEC with 4.07 points per game. Last season, Moore also led the NEC in points per game and was the only player in the conference to average more than 3.50 points per game. Earlier this season, Moore set a single-game school record with seven goals against Canisius. During the regular season, Moore recorded 10 hat tricks and tallied at least five goals on three sepa-

Nationally, Moore finished among the top 10 with a 43.9 shooting percentage. He was also ranked second in the conference with five gamewinning goals. Moore leaves Robert Morris as the most prolific

what the numbers were until the end of the season,” Moore said. “I didn’t want it to get to my head. I just told myself it didn’t matter and focused more on the team’s success.” Nevertheless, Moore also tied the program record with 21 hat tricks, while also being ranked first overall with seven
game-winning goals. “It wasn’t just me,” Moore added. “It was the way our coaches put us in the right positions and worked on our skill set.” Moore is also thankful that the coaches at Robert Morris chose to build the field program’s offence Field Page 33
Three Burnaby girls were named to Team B.C. in readiness for the national bantam lacrosse championships in July. Xenia Dumont, Aime Morrison and Jolene Robinson were selected to the 20-player bantam provincial team that will host this year’s Canadian championships in New Westminster from July 23 to 28. New Westminster players proved the lion’s share on both the bantam and midget girls’ lacrosse provincial teams. Bianca Ballarin, Kristin Hackett, Zoe Loewen, Emily Manville, Naomi Noda and Allison Shanks of New Westminster made up a core group of the bantam girls on the B.C. team. Coquitlam also landed three players on the bantam squad. Seven Royal City runners were named to the Team B.C.’s midget girls’ team. Rianne Wilkinson, Shaya Sandhu, Jenna Chernoff, Morgan Sherley, Tristan Ranford, Mary McQueen and Lauren Stewart were all chosen following tryouts in Richmond June 12. Port Coquitlam was also well represented with five players on the midget provincial team. The B.C. bantam and midget girls’ lacrosse teams will take on provincial sides from the Maritimes, Alberta, Ontario and the Iroquois Nation at Queen’s Park Arena.
Burnaby premier women join forces with Columbus Tom Berridge sports editor
After two seasons under the BGSC Canadians banner, the premier women’s soccer program has reaffiliated with Columbus FC. Calling the move a “bit of a change in direction,” women’s team head coach Matt Holbrook said the formation of the women’s premier team in the storied Azzuri blue colours of Columbus is a perfect fit for both clubs. “(Columbus) was ecstatic. They want to have the top men’s, top women’s and top masters’ programs in the province,”
Holbrook said. “It’s a real good fit for us.” Since Burnaby Canadians director Dick Fryatt helped create the women’s merger with the Burnaby Girls Soccer Club in 2009, club executives have turned over and support for the senior program has lessened, Holbrook said, adding Fryatt is “fully supportive of the club’s move to Columbus.” “In two seasons, we’ve established ourselves as a very competitive team in the (Metro Women’s) premier division, and this exciting partnership with Columbus will help us take another step in our team’s development,” Holbrook
said in a Columbus press release. “Our players are excited to enter our third season in existence, and moving under the Columbus club umbrella will give us the support and structure we were looking for to grow our program on and off the field.” The press release went on to say the new partnership will build on the rich history and tradition of the Columbus club and help create a truly top level club program for elite female soccer players in the Lower Mainland. This season, the women’s team will continue to play its league matches on Sundays in Burnaby. Next year, Columbus hopes to
play its club matches at Empire Field after the MLS Vancouver Whitecaps vacate the PNE grounds and move into B.C. Place. “The women’s premier team is a welcome addition, as it will add a new dimension to our already strong club and will help Columbus FC achieve its goal of being the top senior pro-am club in Canada,” said Columbus FC directors Rob Mascitti and Carmen D’Onofrio in the press release. Last season, the women finished with a 7-3-2 league record and a second-best goal difference of plus-14.
Holbrook expects to field the same back line that allowed just eight goals against last season. However, the club will have to go searching for some scoring punch after losing two of its strikers off last year’s squad. Another member of last season’s team, Kylla Sjoman, is currently playing in the FA women’s professional league in England with the Doncaster Rovers. The Columbus women will kickoff the upcoming season on Aug. 25 against Capilano University. The team also has dates set for friendly matches against Trinity Western and Simon Fraser universities.

Burnaby lax star retires as a pro
Matt Brown of Burnaby ended a five-year Major League Lacrosse career with an announcement of his retirement from the Denver Outlaws on Wednesday. Brown stepped down to give more time to his position as assistant coach with the University of Denver field lacrosse team. “Matt has been an important part of the Outlaws franchise from the very beginning,” said Outlaws general manager Brian Reese, in a Denver Outlaws press release. “He is a great team player, a tremendous ambassador for the sport in Colorado and he is one of the best goal scorers in MLL history. “We are completely supportive of of Matt’s decision to put more time into his new position at University of Denver. He will still be impacting Colorado lacrosse in a positive way and will go down as one of the all-time great Denver Outlaws.” In five seasons with Denver, Brown scored 138 goals and 160 points in 56 career games, ranking him
second in club history in goals scored and third in total points. Brown finished his MLL career ranked 20th in overall tallies. The former Minto Cupwinning Burnaby Laker lefthander graduated from Denver university with 113 goals. At DU, Brown earned All-Great Western Lacrosse League honours as a senior, leading the conference and ranking eighth in the nation with 2.57 goals per game. He holds a school record with seven consecutive hat tricks as a freshman at Denver. Brown is entering his fifth season as an assistant coach at Denver. “Since … the day I accepted this position at DU, Matt Brown as been at my side. Without him I would have been lost. He is loyal, trustworthy and tireless in his efforts for our program. He played at DU, he knows and loves the place, and there is absolutely no better man to fill the role as my first assistant,” said University of Denver head coach Bill Tierney in the release.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Your energy, effectiveness, magnetism, and optimism rise for the weeks ahead. You’re on a winning track! That is, if you don’t get knocked off it Sunday/Monday by insisting too strongly on your own way. Be flexible, discern others’ desires. Your popularity rises the rest of this year, and this Monday it could bring you love! Wish, hope, see opportunities, not oppositions. Retreat for a rest and some deep thinking Tuesday/Wednesday – good plans can hatch, and civil servants favour you. Your energy, clout rise Thursday-Saturday: but a domestic or realty problem needs solving. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Take life easy, roll with the punches this week and the next few.Lie low, rest, plan, meditate, deal with shut-ins, fulfill old obligations, be charitable and spiritual, especially Thursday to Saturday. Study career, employment, government and head-office situations Sunday/Monday – think about the changes these areas face now to 2023. Your health faces changes too: a chronic condition disappears. The decade ahead brings digestive concerns, so eat sensibly. Vegetables cure ills. Your hopes rise Tuesday/Wednesday: enjoy a pleasant interval. Saturday night brings “potent glances.” Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Hopes and wishes come true over the weeks ahead. Your optimism grows, your popularity rises. Expect flirtation, light romance, entertainment, social delights! Issue and accept invitations. Wisdom, understanding visit Sunday/Monday. You could see friends struggle, or gravitate toward one another. Be ambitious Tuesday/ Wednesday – you can make headway, all is smooth, especially in money areas related to career. Your hopes and happiness rise Thursday to Saturday, but impediments arise to money, earnings, sensuality and romance – practical impediments. Smile, bide your time.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: The weeks ahead feature property, family, security, gardening, retirement, and the establishment or strengthening of foundations (concrete and emotional/spiritual). You’ll say goodbye to some people or situations, and greet new ones. Snip off wilted vines. Chase money Monday/ Tuesday, but pay attention to major developments: 1) the change in your life and goals causes a change in your home and foundations; 2) this “home change” must face and deal with a change in status or career. Both are long-term, fill the decade ahead – many heartfelt wishes will come true before 2018! Taurus April 20-May 20: Short trips, paperwork, errands, calls, news and casual acquaintances fill the weeks ahead. It’s a busy but not important time. A new project could arise in these areas Thursday onward. Your energy and charisma hit a beautiful peak Sunday/Monday – both days feature a critical development, one which will mold your character going forward. Not in a “war” or conflict way, but in a wisdom way. Chase money Tuesday/Wednesday – but reasonably. Information comes Thursday to Saturday – avoid taking risks in property, legal, and employment zones. Avoid gossip all week; think first. Gemini May 21-June 20: Chase money, seek new clients, buy/sell, and deal with all money matters for the few weeks ahead. Your overall financial, investment, net worth situation is changing – has been changing since 2008, and will continue to do so until 2023. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. Hints of this (and perhaps of tension between your social needs and your money desires) appear Sunday/Monday. Now through August 2012, don’t make the wrong financial decision based on anger, selfishness, over-independence, or a “fed up” feeling. Your energy, charisma surge mid-week – start good things!

June 26 - July 2, 2011
Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The cosmos nudges you toward career, business, ambition and prestige situations for the next few weeks (especially late this week). Simultaneously, a deeper, perhaps unconscious force pulls you toward domesticity, security, foundations. You could experience this as a try-versus-quit tug-o-war. It’s there strongly Sunday/ Monday. Best approach: make changes to your career (etc.) goals in order to conform to new realities. The year ahead favours major life changes, and these could also touch a lucky wand to your investments and/or intimate life. For success: talk, be curious! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: This is a gentle, sweet time of understanding and wisdom. You might meet a love who could become a life mate – though this is more favoured after July 2, as practical impediments lurk all this week (e.g., that handsome guy is a single father with 10 loud kids.) But in the big picture, you’re finally on true love’s road – though your destination could appear in any one of the fifteen years ahead. The 12 months ahead bring lucky relationships and splendid money opportunities. Love’s choice arises Tuesday. Finances, sexual urges are easy midweek, but might be subtle traps. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Mysteries, secrets, changes and commitments fill the weeks ahead, especially this Thursday-Saturday – though so many practical barriers and traps arise this week that you should wait until next week to act. (Especially to invest, change lifestyle, seek a health diagnosis, undergo surgery, seek sexual intimacy, or make any kind of important commitment or new start.) Sunday/Monday are for chores – practice safety, and eat/dress sensibly. Relationships are smooth and benign Tuesday/Wednesday – still, be wary of committing yourself (and of offered advice). Joy, Saturday late!
Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Relationships are paramount during this irritating week. Be diplomatic. Bosses and VIPs seem un-amused, and practical matters run into soft, subtle but strong impediments. Opportunities will come, but the good ones arrive after July 2, not before. Sunday/Monday are romantic – you could meet someone who finds you mysteriously attractive. This could grow to “deep heights.” Tackle chores Tuesday/Wednesday, but don’t take on so much it will interfere with other activities. You’re meant to find love and pleasure this year: to deny it would be a loss. Go slow Thursday to Saturday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The month ahead holds chores, health and nutrition concerns, and nudges you to attend to kids and pets. It’s a good time to seek employment – after this week. Though Sunday/ Monday might contain stress (Sunday) and a feeling of alienation (Monday) these days also highlight home, recuperation, Gaia, property – all imbued with good/ great fortune over the months ahead. A nice romantic breeze is wafting its way through your life June/July, and you should feel its light touch Tuesday/Wednesday. Handle chores, but avoid romance, machinery purchases, dull people, Thursday-Saturday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The accent lies on romance, pleasure, beauty, creative surges, speculation, risks and self-expression, now through late July (and especially this Thursday-Saturday). This week’s a little dicey, though, filled with practical barriers, so a bit of waiting or hesitation isn’t unwise. Sunday/Monday indelibly link your romantic and social sides, or cause a tug-o-war between the two. A friend might become a lover (or hints thereof) – or you might have to choose between the two. Domestic matters flow smoothly Tuesday/Wednesday, but might not be beneficial long-term. Talk aids career. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
