Hit-and-run suspect turns self in Cayley Dobie staff reporter

The female driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a 72-year-old Burnaby resident on June 30 has come forward. According to Staff Sgt. Major John Buis, the suspect driver turned herself into police earlier this week following an emotional plea from the victim’s family last Friday. “She did the right thing and came in earlier this week after seeing media coverage where police and the family appealed to her to come forward. We’re appreciative of her cooperation, and the media’s assistance in this investigation,” Buis said in a press release. Ed Simpkins was killed when a car struck him while he was riding his bike along 13th Avenue at Wright Street. Police announced last week they had obtained surveillance footage from a nearby security camera that showed there was a second witness vehicle that was at the scene the night of June 30. “Our investigation is ongoing, however, and we still need a key witness to come forward, the driver of a four-door hatchback, possibly grey or brown, who we think came across the incident seconds after it occurred around 8:30 p.m. on June 30,” Buis said. In an earlier interview with the NOW, Buis said it’s unknown whether or not the second driver saw Simpkins or if he or she only saw the car stopped and decided to turn around rather than attempt to go around the scene. “We believe this driver is critically important as a witness to our investigation,” Buis said. “We urgently wish to speak with that person about what he or she may have seen that evening.” Anyone with information is urged to contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922. cdobie@burnabynow.com

Call it a mother’s intuition. Last July 31, Amanda and Matt Arneill’s five-month-old baby girl, Lauren, was losing weight and having trouble sleeping.

They called a nurses’ line and took her to a walk in clinic and the family doctor – everyone said she was OK, but Amanda knew something wasn’t right with her little girl. “She seemed like she was losing her spark,” she says. “I just felt like – I don’t know – there was something else there.” The new parents took Lauren to B.C. Children’s Hospital, where she was admitted to emergency. A doctor detected a heart murmur, and in the middle of further diagnostics, the baby girl’s heart stopped. Amanda and Matt were holding

her, when she had started to dry heave and suddenly seized up. They handed her off to doctors, who rushed her off to be resuscitated. “I just remember standing in the hallway screaming on the top of my lungs, ‘This can’t be happening,’” Amanda says. “It was terrible.” Doctors started CPR, trying to get Lauren back. “I can’t tell you how long it was. Time just stopped,” Amanda recalls. Then, Lauren started to cry. She was

Engineering director brings new perspective Stefania Seccia staff reporter

When you first walk into Leon Gous’s office in the engineering department, immediately hanging on the left wall is the famous 1990 Voyager photograph where, for a fraction of a second, the camera captures blue light reflecting from Earth – a tiny speck in the large dark cosmos – made famous in the late Carl Sagan’s book, Pale Blue Dot. “There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world,” Sagan states. “To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.” Beside the photograph featuring Sagan’s famous quote, a large world map hangs across from the new director of engineering’s l-shaped desk. The wall décor is an important backdrop to what Gous refers to as always keeping things in perspective. “I always used to tell my staff in Vernon, is you always have to keep some perspective in life,” he said. “And I always had that world map up … because the guys would come in at the city and always say to me, basically, there’s these end-of-the-world problems, and I’ll sit back and say, ‘look at that map and realize that seven billion people couldn’t give a damn about it.’” Gous said those ideas help him handle a problem while also keeping an eye on how it relates to everything as a whole. “The Carl Sagan (Pale Blue Dot quote) was one more perspec-

tive zoom out from the world map because if you look at that picture there … 6.5 billion miles away is the little Earth and that’s basically perspective. That particular piece is quite stunning, in fact.” Keeping the world in his purview, Gous hails from South Africa where he obtained his two engineering degrees; his relevant one is an honours degree in urban engineering. “I’m a civil engineer,” he said. “I got both of those in South Africa in Pretoria, and I worked a little bit there at the time, actually, for a municipality in South Africa.” Gous worked for a former town called Midrand, which is now part of the greater Metro Johannesburg. “It was a really interesting time I happened to be working for the city, and of course it was right around an election in ‘94,” he said. “It was the first real free election so it changed the face of a lot of organizations on the local government and provincial government levels. It was an interesting time. You could never take away that learning experience.” It was a dynamic time that would initially put Gous in the throws of public service, but in 1996, he and his wife left their families and moved to Canada. He worked for a private consulting firm on small hydro projects for six years and did his MBA at Simon Fraser University. “From there, I was actually recruited just at the end of my MBA to go and start up a regional water utility in the Vernon area,” Gous said. “I was hired to go set that up and become their project director, which was kind of

looking after a big capital investment program that they had to improve their water collection program.” After a year of working for the regional district, one of the City of Vernon’s general managers resigned. Gous took the position and then in 2005 took over the city’s top position as the chief administrative officer. “I left there after two terms,”

he said. “When I got hired on I did commit to two terms because we had a whole turnaround that we needed to do and I was committed to do that.” Gous left at the end of 2011 and moved to the Lower Mainland to work, once again, in the private sector. “(I) worked for Flour, which is a huge engineering and construction company and I was work-

City council stalls on emergency notifications Stefania Seccia staff reporter

It seems a group of North Burnaby residents who have been waiting 14 years for a city-wide emergency notification system will have to wait a bit longer. At Monday’s meeting, council decided to not approve $25,000 in funding to hire a consultant to update Burnaby’s 2005 mass notifications systems study at this time. Coun. Dan Johnston said there were issues with the report and council passed his motion to refer it back to the finance and civic development committee. 6

The report was a response to a May 6 delegation by Art Quan, who appeared on behalf of Capitol Hill residents on the community advisory panel for Chevron’s North Burnaby refinery. The group has been calling for a “speedy implementation” of a localized system that would notify residents near the refinery of an emergency, which could eventually cover the whole city. “The community advisory panel has been anxiously waiting many years to have a rapid emergency notification system in place,” Quan said at the meeting in early May.

Quan also told council that his group had been working with Chevron and waiting 14 years for an emergency notification system. Chevron’s proposed system would be web-based, requiring no hardware, which is the system used in North and West Vancouver. “We realize the neighbourhood around Chevron’s North Burnaby refinery is not the only community in Burnaby that could benefit from an emergency notification system,” he said. “We acknowledge that there are numerous pipelines that run throughout Burnaby and large crude oil storage and other petroleum product stor-

age facilities, as well as industrial facilities near other Burnaby neighbourhoods, all (have) potential for serious incidents.” Quan did not respond to the NOW’s request for comment in time for press deadline. The report that came up at the July 8 council meeting before being referred back would have used $25,000 in gaming funds to hire a consultant to update the mass notifications systems study from 2005. The consultant would have evaluated the feasibility and advisability of implementing a mass notification system for Burnaby, according to a finance report. sseccia@burnabynow.com

admitted to the intensive care unit, and despite the earlier medical opinions, it was obvious there was something incredibly wrong with her heart. Lauren had ALCAPA, a congenital heart defect so rare, only one in 300,000 births are affected. Most babies die within their first year unless they get surgery. But with Lauren, two surgeries and a pacemaker later, her heart functions are slowly returning to normal, and Amanda describes her as a happy and energetic 16month-old. “She’s going a mile a minute all the time,” she says. Amanda is convinced if she had not taken Lauren to the hospital that fateful day, her daughter would not have made it.

But with the one-year anniversary of the ordeal approaching, Amanda and Matt were looking for a way to reframe the harrowing experience, so they decided to hold a massive garage sale, with all proceeds going to the hospital. “That’s why we are doing this, to try to take this from a scary anniversary to something we can celebrate and give back,” Amanda says. The garage sale fundraiser is set for Saturday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 3795 Watling St. in Burnaby. Several people have donated items, and Amanda says there will be furniture, household items, kids’ toys and clothing. The family is hoping to raise $3,000 and they will drop the money off on July 31, the one-year anniversary of Lauren’s lifesaving trip to the hospital.

move,” he said laughing as he mentions he’s outnumbered in his household with his two daughters, wife and their female dog. Gous was drawn to the position in Burnaby because of the city’s reputation for being well managed. “What I really liked was it’s obviously a very wellrun municipality,” he said. “The size was, I think, also the right kind of range that I was interested in.” Gous started on July 2. “I think clearly my expe-

rience as (chief administrative officer) of the City of Vernon must have helped,” he said, when asked why he believes he was chosen for the position. “Of course, a very broad experience of running a city and these kinds of positions as a director – you do really need to have a city handle, not just focus on engineering issues – you need to be looking at the interest of the whole city.” He said another goal is to serve the community. “It sounds trite, always, but it’s still fundamental

to everything we do,” he added. “We have fundamental services we have to deliver and we deliver it to a customer base, and if we’re not meeting their need, you’re pretty much wasting your time. To me, customer service from a city’s perspective is important.” Barry Davis was acting director of engineering but decided the position wasn’t for him, according to Bob Moncur, city manager. Davis has returned to his position as deputy director of engineering.

The Chevron refinery sits cosily tucked away along the North Burnaby waterfront, near homes and parks and schools. We may welcome the business both bring to our city, but we cannot put on blinders to the fact that there are risks involved, as we saw with the pipeline rupture in 2007 and oil seepage at the refinery in recent years.

Mayor Derek Corrigan has said the refinery falls under the federal government’s jurisdiction, and he is unsure whose responsibility it is to issue emergency alerts. But if no one – whether it be on the municipal, provincial or federal level – steps in to set up a system that would offer valuable information to Burnaby residents during an emergency, you can be sure there will be plenty of blame to be shared by all levels of government, should such an emergency take place.

On July 3, MLA Jane Thornthwaite made a statement in the legislature about the opening of the seventh sound stage at Burnaby’s Bridge Studios. She went on to talk about the direct and indirect benefits the film industry brings to local businesses when Lions Gate (North Shore) Studios has projects in production. What she failed to note was the B.C. film industry’s downward spiral resulting from her Liberal government’s failure to keep film tax credits competitive with Ontario and Quebec, a move which Ms. Thornthwaite’s own statement indicates would spur more economic activity by employing film

The head of North Shore Studios announced 2013’s first quarter as his “worst ever.” Meanwhile, Ontario gained almost 8,000 new jobs in film since raising their tax credit. The B.C. NDP promised to increase the film and television tax credit last April, a promise that industry leaders praised as a move that would keep our province competitive so highly skilled film workers could stay in B.C. instead of chasing jobs that are fleeing our province. Why hasn’t Ms. Thornthwaite pushed her own Liberal government to take this needed action while

Re: Bikes bad for nature?, Burnaby NOW, July 2I As a longtime member of the Burnaby Mountain Bike Association, I have been very impressed with what the association has done over the past decade with the environmental concerns of this beautiful area. I am not speaking on behalf of the association, just a concerned hiker/biker of the mountain. When the association first started, they wanted to make sure they worked with all stakeholders and the City of Burnaby to do the best job possible for multi-use trails and environmental concerns. The first few years were full of many, many meetings with the city/parks board etc. to make sure everything was done with best practices for the environmentally sensitive area and all concerned user groups. The association has four trail days a year and works with the city to work on the trails for all users. We have had incredible volunteers from the Stoney Creek Environment Committee help us over the years, as well as the boy/ girl scouts from the Burquitlam area, other bike clubs and many others. We usually have 30 to 40-plus volunteers work all day to make the mountain a better place for all. Much of that work is erosion problems, drainage, safe low ladder bridges over sensitive areas, replanting of trees and native plants and garbage pick up etc. The boy/girl scouts are the experts in tree planting and all work is done under the supervision of the city and supervisors. We have learned plenty over the years … regarding the native plants and trees. We have had experts come in from the North Shore Mountain Biking club to help us with the latest and best trail main-

tenance practices. I cannot say enough good things about the community and all the user groups that come together for these trail days and other events on the mountain from the Great Salmon Sendoff to the Cardiac Challenge Bike Race. West Coast Cycling, who are the organizers of the race, have been very well organized and run a great race. They make sure everything is done right and help us and many others on trail days. The bike association is also big on getting kids out on their bikes. We have had many bike clinics over the years from Hats Off Days, Sapperton Days, the bike park on the mountain and Burnaby schools. We teach the kids about safe riding, safe areas to ride and bike maintenance. These bike clinics are always at no charge to the kids, and we work with incredible volunteer coaches and the Burnaby Optimist Club, which feeds the kids with an incredible barbecue. Many of these volunteers also help with the Velodrome racing and the Giro di Burnaby. Many of these young kids come back to help with our bike clinics and trail days and get credit with school volunteer/Scout/leadership courses. I have some concerns as well with this mountain and the environmental sensitivities. I feel the concerns are being well managed by the city and with the help of us all, will be looked after in the future. With all the wildlife and salmon in the area, it is an amazing gem in the middle of our city. For those that do not know about many of the trails that have been opened up (multi-use and pedestrian only), some are rarely used. Do yourself a favour and take a hike or bike ride on the quiet north side of the mountain. From the bike park you can hike Hang Your Hat or Mountain Air trail and see for yourself what all of us can do by working together. If you feel really good, head up the 500 very steep steps of the Velodrome Trail, 700-plus feet up to the Playground of the Gods. Last Thursday night, there were only four on the entire trail. Looking forward to working with all for our gem in the city. John Preissl, via email

dying out there – literally. One basic difference between human mammals and the canine variety is that we sweat better than they do. In fact, dogs sweat only from their feet. And when that tongue is hanging out as far as the dog can get it, the motivation is not joy; it’s the only other way the dog has to dissipate the excruciating heat that is building in its

body from the sun beating its rays down relentlessly, and the pavement radiating heat upwards, equally relentlessly. And while a bit of water from the hand of god now and again might help ease a little of the dog’s discomfort, it’s not enough. Your dog is dying, idiot. If you don’t believe me, next time you are possessed of the desire to submit your dog to concrete

and pavement on the hottest days of the year, put on a heavy fur coat and walk yourself downtown for an hour or two. Nick Gregson is dwarfed by the giant painting he’s done on a brick wall at the corner of Hastings and Holdom Streets. The black outline of a woman’s face and a cartoon character are the first stage of what will be a full colour painting to be completed later this summer. As well as the mural in Burnaby, Gregson is working on a wall on St. John’s Street in Port Moody, and on one on Commercial Drive in Vancouver as part of the Metro Vancouver Mural Project, a non-profit that works to provide local artists with donated wall space. Underneath the new image, it’s easy to see the dirt and graffiti tagging on the white wall. “It was pretty terrible,” he said, noting there are hundreds of walls in the city that could benefit from having murals painted on them to prevent graffiti and improve the aesthetic of the area. “I really think community art, public art, is one of the highest forms of art, and that’s what a lot of people desire,” he said. Gregson became a painter at an early age, being influenced by the “open wall” underneath an overpass near the PNE in East Vancouver where a skateboard park provides a legal space for graffiti artists to tag and paint. He said he has also been influenced by famous street artists like Banksy

Cayley Dobie staff reporter

A Burnaby mother who disappeared last Tuesday night has been found. New Westminster police spotted 30-year-old Susan Mitchell shortly after Burnaby RCMP announced they’d found video footage of Mitchell at a TD Bank on Kingsway on July 3, less than 24 hours after she went missing. Mitchell disappeared July 2 after tucking her two young children into bed at their Willingdon Avenue apartment. RCMP were alerted the next morning and deemed her disappearance “high risk.” According to the RCMP, Mitchell was found in New Westminster on July 4; about 90 minutes after Burnaby Staff Sgt. Steve Crawford held a press conference urging Mitchell to come home. Crawford couldn’t say why Mitchell went missing, but according to Burnaby RCMP the case is now closed. – With files from The Vancouver Sun

Sojourners ready to rock blues fest T

he Burnaby NOW arts reporter, Marelle Reid, recently chatted with Khari Wendell McClelland of The Sojourners about his career and upcoming performance at this summer’s Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival.

ON MY BEAT

Question: Where are you from? Answer: I’m from Detroit, Michigan. I’ve been in Vancouver now for eight years.

Marelle Reid

Q: What brought you here? A: Well, it started with a period where I had been really involved in academic life and I was working at a factory in Detroit. Also, it was the end of a 15-year relationship, and things changed really quickly. When I came out here I ended up being really connected with the arts community pretty immediately and my first employment when I moved here was as a florist. So that was the first thing I did when I moved here, but I knew that I wanted to do something artistic with my life, and I’d played music as I was growing up. And then I’d had a relationship with someone who was a touring musician and was a pretty prominent solo artist, and I started an a capella gospel quartet with her and some other friends. From there, I met The Sojourners in their original formation maybe six years ago now. It was at the Vancouver Folk Festival. We were all on stage together and I sang an old gospel tune and they just immediately started singing in harmony with me. From then on, every time I saw them it was like, ‘Hey, we should sing together,’ and then one of the members fell ill and they needed someone to sort of fulfill that role and that’s when I was called to ask if I would become part of the group and that’s been three years ago now. Q: Are the other two in the group also from the States? A: Yeah, Will (Sanders) was born in Alexandria, Louisiana, and Marcus (Mosely) was born in Ralls, Texas, and both spent time in California as they got older, so yeah, we’re all from the States and all found ourselves in Vancouver for different reasons. I think it’s been a great move for all of us. It’s been a healthy and creative career (move) for us. Q: Where do The Sojourners perform? Are you a touring group? A: Yeah, we just got back from the Winnipeg Jazz Festival last week and we’re going to be going to Dawson City for the Dawson City Music Festival in the Yukon. We’ll go back out towards the east again to play the Winnipeg BBQ and Blues Festival. We’ll be doing of course a variety of roots and blues festivals (this summer). Q: Can you tell me about your latest album? A: It’s really cool. It’s not titled yet,

Contributed photo/burnaby now

In tune: From left, Marcus Mosely, Khari McClelland and Will Sanders are The Sojourners, the

award-winning gospel-soul trio based in Vancouver. They will be performing at the Burnaby Blues and Roots festival being held at Deer Lake Park on Saturday, Aug. 10.

but it’s definitely, I would say, more blues centered. Still gospel, but centred musically and instrumentally around the song structure and arranging around the blues more … the last two albums were more on the folk side and this one’s, I don’t know, maybe a little bit more danceable and a little bit more energetic. It’s not a total departure (from our original sound), but we’re just sort of realizing we have a lot of fun when we sing certain songs and kind of went in a direction that kind of lended itself to an energetic show. Q: How would you describe your group’s genre? A: I would say it’s sort of rootsy gospel music. It’s three-part harmony in the style of the early gospel quartets. You know, people like Sam Cooke and Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye, and you know, the list goes on and on and on, and they almost all started by singing gospel music in churches. Q: Have you toured in the States? A: We’ve played in the States. We haven’t done much touring, but I think that’s going to change in the next little while. We’re actually going to Australia this year, to spend Christmas and New

Year’s touring festivals and we’re going to the U.K. and Denmark in the spring, so yeah, lots of things are going well. Q: What can your Burnaby fans expect from your set at the Blues and Roots Fest this summer? A: A really energetic show. I feel like the group really has an intention of addressing social issues. I think that it’s music that is good for reflection and, you know, sometimes we find ourselves with situations in our lives that are challenging and we don’t know which way to turn and we look for solace in music sometimes and I think the music that we do is a place for joyful recognition of brotherhood and sisterhood. I think it’s music the people leave feeling more themselves, leave feeling joyful (after hearing). … It’s the basic questions of existence, you know, why am I here? What’s my purpose here? And our group is not religious, we’re not trying to proselytize, or tell anybody anything, but rather (to perform for an audience) that is made up of multiple (beliefs) and different sexual orientations. There is no dogma in terms of anything besides trying to be kind and good to yourself and to others and that’s really the centre of what we’re trying to do. Q: Where does the name The Sojourners

To see a video, scan with

come from? A: Jim Byrnes, who’s won a Juno in the blues category, … before I was in the group, he had the group sing on a couple of albums and he just brought the three Sojourners Page 12 What: The 14th annual Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival. Headlining the festival is Blue Rodeo, the country-rock band on tour celebrating 25 years together. In addition to The Sojourners, the lineup includes funk/soul/R&B singer Charles Bradley, Canadian blues-rock musician Shaun Verreault, blues/soul/R&B singer Shakura S’Aida, multi-awardwinning blues guitarist David Gogo, folk-rock/reggae duo Jon and Roy, blues rocker ZZ Ward, multi-instrumentalist and Emmy-nominated composer John Lee Sanders, folk-rock artist Vince Vaccaro, singer Ndidi Onukwulu, and the six-piece ensemble band Brickhouse. The 12 bands will perform on three stages this year. When: The festival takes place on Aug. 10 from 1 to 10 p.m. Gates open at noon. Sojourners: Juno nominated Q: Are you looking forward to playing in Burnaby? A: Oh, yeah, I’m so excited to be playing. The couple that I’ve gone to, I’ve really appreciated the quality – like, whoever’s choosing the bands does a great job. I think we’re incredibly excited to see Charles Bradley. … He sings about the real challenges that people are facing and how they can do better, how they can rise up and live happy and good lives.

Q: What was it like to get a Juno nomination? A: It’s always nice to know that you’re being recognized and that people are listening to you, and I think that’s the goal of any musician, is to want to be heard by people and have it resonate with them and

it’s recognition that people who listen a lot to music and I think have a lot of experience within those genres, listen to something that we create and think it’s a mark of excellence. It’s always great to have that happen. mreid@burnabynow.com

How to track tankers, wildlife O

ur local MP, Kennedy Stewart, said something rather alarming about tankers at a June 27 meeting hosted by Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion. In Burrard Inlet, Port Metro Vancouver is responsible for overseeing the passage of tankers, which are pulled by tug boats to make the journey safer. At the meeting, Stewart told the audience that his office has received reports of tankers travelling in the Burrard Inlet with no tug escorts. I called Port Metro Vancouver to check, and they confirmed that it’s sometimes true – when the tankers are empty. Tug escorts are only used for tankers after they are filled with crude at Kinder Morgan’s Westridge Marine Terminal in north Burnaby.

Tracking wildlife

Speaking of interactive maps, I came across another interesting one, this time to monitor wildlife. We’ve been receiving a lot of calls about bear sightings and, in some cases, droppings (I’ll spare you the details). Conservation officer Dave Cox told me about Wild Safe B.C.’s Wildlife Alert Reporting Program,

which also has a map showing all the latest wildlife sightings. The icons are in the shapes of animals – bears, coyotes and cougars, for example – and they are colour-coded, with red being the most recent sighting. The map only lists sighting that are reported to the conservation officers, so make sure you call 1-877-952-7277, and not some random wildlife organization, to report a sighting. The conservation officers are concerned about wildlife behaving aggressively. They are not that interested in animals minding their own business when they are not causing trouble. To check out the wildlife map, go to www.wildsafebc.com/ WARP.

For more information, go to the centre’s website at www.nikkeiplace.org.

Green team

The Lower Mainland Green Team has been at it again. The crew of volunteers descended on Deer Lake on June 23, removing policemen’s helmet in the park. Policemen’s helmet is an invasive species, which can choke out native plants and overrun natural habitat. Thirty volunteers removed 1.8 cubic metres of the weed. The Lower Mainland Green Team is a collection of volunteers, organized by Lyda Salatian through Meetup. com. They regularly get together to help improve the local environment by removing invasive plants, restoring shoreline habitat, preparing and harvesting vegetable beds on community farms, planting native plants and trees and picking up litter. To get involved, go to www.meetup.com/the -lower-mainland-green -team. Have an item for Here and Now? Email jmoreau@burn abynow.com.

I also asked the port how people on shore can tell the difference between a tanker and a ship transporting grain, for example, and I was told unless you have a trained eye and can clearly see the apparatus on the ship, it’s very difficult to tell. That’s when Port Metro Vancouver mentioned this very handy interactive map on their website. The map shows which ships are in the inlet and what they are doing. You have to download an application to use the map, which doesn’t take long. The map shows blue icons for the various ships in and around the Vancouver harbour, and if you hover over the icons, you can see what kind of vessel it is. To check out the map, go the Port Metro Vancouver website.

Is There a Secret to a Good Fitting Bra? Studies say that 80 per cent of women are walking around wearing the wrong bra size. There’s a bra boutique that specializes in helping you find the proper fit, one where you can slip into a European-designed bra that is at once beautiful and more comfortable than you ever thought possible. Welcome to Change Lingerie. The European-based store features an exquisite selection of custom-designed bras to make any woman feel good about herself. Early on, Change Lingerie determined that more cup sizes were needed to account for the many variations in size and shape. To fit customers properly, the chain sells 100 bra sizes in eight different bra models, in cups up to K. Manufactured and designed in Denmark, not only do Change’s bras feel good, they look fabulous. “One of our most common sizes is 32G… not a size you would think of, “says Jenny Zucker, spokeswoman for Change Lingerie. “Custom fitting is at the core of what we do.”

Change offers free professional fittings anytime – just walk in, no need for an appointment. A bra fitting is one of the greatest things a woman can do for herself, adds Zucker. You will also be pleasantly surprised to learn that a great fitting bra doesn’t have to break the bank. “You don’t have to pay $100 or $150 for a beautiful European bra… ours start at $39.50 and the average price is $49.50,” adds Zucker. Change Lingerie is much more than a bra boutique. The international leader in bras also creates stunning swimwear in the entire size range, so you can get something pretty for any size. In B.C. since 2006, Change Lingerie opened its first store in West Vancouver’s Park Royal, followed closely with its Vancouver West Broadway location. Women soon realized how special the bra chain was and its Metrotown boutique opened a year later in 2007. Change Lingerie thanks its loyal clientele with its customer royalty program, Club Change. In addition to keeping track of your size and purchase history, the boutique offers special rebates to CC members and 10 per cent off regular price purchases each and every time you buy. Founded in 1995 in Scandinavia, Change Lingerie has more than 150 stores in 11 countries. Come and see for yourself why Change Lingerie makes for a truly wonderful bra and swimwear experience. SFU aboriginal program launches dream Marelle Reid staff reporter

A year ago, Janelle Dobson-Kocsis was dreaming of a career helping aboriginal people struggling with mental health issues, but she had no idea how to get started. The New Westminster resident had applied to the Douglas College psychiatric nursing program right after high school seven years ago but wasn’t accepted because her math marks were too low. However, after years of feeling trapped in low-paying restaurant jobs and understimulating care-aid positions, she discovered a program at Simon Fraser University specifically tailored to help aboriginal high school grads and mature students get into post-secondary health sciences studies. The aboriginal pre-health program (APH) is what Dobson-Kocsis, a member of the Kwanlin Dun Band, credits with getting her on track for her dream job. “If I didn’t take the APH program, I’d either be struggling with an adult learning centre math course or I would have tried to take one and dropped out of it,” she says. According to Natalie Wood-Wiens, indigenous programs coordinator at SFU, only eight per cent of aboriginal adults between ages 25 and 65 in Canada have a post-secondary degree, compared with 23 per cent of nonaboriginal adults, as per the 2006 census data. Having a program like this at SFU is a leg up that is sorely needed for aspiring aboriginal health-care workers, she said. “A significant number of health professionals in varying capacities are needed in aboriginal communities,” she wrote in an email to the NOW. “Educational institutions, in partnership with aboriginal communities and organizations, can play a key role in building this capacity through the development of appropriate and relevant programs such as the SFU aboriginal pre-health bridge program.” The two-semester program, started in 2009, offers courses that serve to enhance students’ academic standing to help them gain entry into post-secondary programs. So far, 19 students have completed the program, which covers study skills, cultural studies focusing on Canadian aboriginal people, and math. For Dobson-Kocsis, this was exactly what she needed. “What I wanted was that math, but I got a whole bunch of stuff on top of that, and then other opportunities came out of it,” she says. “It was everything I wanted and then some.” This spring Dobson-Kocsis finished the program with flying colours, as well as newfound confidence in her math skills – even volunteering this year as a math tutor – and got a summer job working in the SFU Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addiction. The math position was through the Math Catcher program at SFU, which instructs aboriginal youth around the province using culturally relevant stories, pictures and objects to explain math concepts and formulas. Dobson-Kocsis found her way into the summer research position through SFU’s training of aboriginal youth in biomedical labs (TAYBL) program, which mentors graduates from the pre-health program in preparation for health-related careers. Dobson-Kocsis is now working with health sciences professor Elliot Goldner, who says having her in his lab has been mutually beneficial. This spring, Dobson-Kocsis was accepted into both the Douglas College psychiatric nursing degree program as well as the SFU bachelor of arts in psychology program. She chose the Douglas College program, which she will begin in September, and then she intends to pursue a master’s in health sciences at SFU. “Janelle has an enormously bright future ahead of her,” said Wood-Wiens. “Her dedication, perseverance and commitment is truly inspirational, and we are honoured to have been part of her journey in the pre-health program. We look forward to her return to SFU graduate studies.” Having a clinical degree will also give Dobson-Kocsis hands-on experience in a hospital setting, which she says will be an important part of building her skill set in her chosen field. For more information about the aboriginal pre-health program at SFU, visit www.sfu.ca/continuing-studies. html. The application deadline for the September 2013 program is July 31.

RECALL AND INITIATIVE ACT

This notice is published pursuant to section 4 of the Recall and Initiative Act. Approval in principle has been granted on an application for an initiative petition. The petition will be issued to proponent Dana Larsen on Monday, September 9, 2013 and signature sheets must be submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer by Monday, December 9, 2013. The Title of the Initiative is: An initiative to amend the Police Act. Summary of Initiative: The initiative draft Bill entitled, “Sensible Policing Act” proposes to amend the Police Act to no longer use provincial police resources on the enforcement of current laws in relation to simple possession and use of cannabis by adults. The draft law would prohibit the use of provincial police resources for this purpose, would require police to report in detail to the Minister of Justice any actual use of resources for this purpose and why it was necessary, and require the Minister to publish that report. The Bill also proposes that the province would call upon the Federal Government to repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis, or give British Columbia an exemption, such that British Columbia is able to tax and regulate cannabis similar to the regulation of alcohol and tobacco. As well it proposes that British Columbia shall establish a Provincial Commission to study the means and requirements necessary for the province to establish a legal and regulated model for the production and use of cannabis by adults. Last, the Bill would make nonlawful possession and use of cannabis by minors an offence similar to possession and use of alcohol.

Initiative Advertising: Individuals or organizations who sponsor initiative advertising, other than the proponent and registered opponents, must register with the Chief Electoral Officer before they conduct or publish initiative advertising. WHEELS Deals Lexus continues tradition of reliable vehicles David Chao contributor

In 1989, Toyota decided to enter the luxury car market in a significant way. They did so by creating the Lexus brand that became the standard by which all other luxury brands were measured. Their first model introduced was the LS and this class-leading, full-size sedan has continued to be the range’s flagship ever since. I still remember driving one of the first Lexus LS to hit the market. I was shocked at how well the car performed against some of the established models in the market place. The car was so quiet and refined

that it felt like it was ‘riding on air.’ Lexus has always been respected for building luxurious, safe and reliable cars. However, they were sometimes criticized for being too conservative. Recently, their new models, such as the blazing LFA supercar and sharp-looking GS and IS models, have changed peoples’ opinion somewhat. Lexus never forgot about the car that started its brand, though. All along the way, the LS maintained its technological innovation and unsurpassed luxury. However, when held up against the established market leaders from Europe, Mercedes, BMW, Audi, and Jaguar, the Lexus flagship

lacked a performance element. Well, for 2013, that will end with the introduction of the new F Sport model.

Design

2013 marks possibly the biggest refresh this model line has ever seen. Half of the car’s 6,000 parts have been re-engineered. The basic size and weight remain the same as the outgoing model. The most obvious change is the front fascia. Lexus’ new spindle-shaped grill gives the LS a bold new look. Other refinements include chrome accents, a lower front bumper and a Lexus Page 21

bulge running up the centre of the hood. The chrome accents along the side lead to a sculpted rear end which continues Lexus’ dramatic new image. If eyes are the windows to the soul, the LS’s new headlamps project the sophistication at its heart. High-intensity discharge lights are standard but those seeking something special can opt for an all-LED setup. The Lexus-logo tail lamps are especially eye catching and definitely reinforce the confidence-inspired appearance. Available in rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, the F Sport does not receive any more horsepower upgrades but it does get more aggressive styling and unique suspension setup options. The results are startling as the F Sport can appear downcontinued from page 17

The area that sees the least significant changes in the refresh is the engine compartment. Lexus’ naturally aspirated direct-injected 4.6-litre eight-cylinder engine powers the majority of the line, except for the hybrid. The rear-wheel-drive models receive six more horsepower, up to 386-hp and 367 ft-lbs. of torque and the all-wheeldrive gets 359-hp with 367 ft-lbs. of torque. The only alternative is a hybrid powertrain which mates a 5.0-litre V8 to two electric motors using a CVT transmission. These combine to create 438-hp and 385 ft-lbs. of torque. Driving the new LS is also not a major departure from years past. Engine and

The Drive Mode Select feature allows the driver to further tailor the feel of their ride with Eco, Normal, Comfort, Sport and Sport S+ driving modes. Top seed Nick Coutts won this year’s men’s title at the Burnaby Open tennis championships. The former University of Utah scholarship student defeated No. 4 seed Riaan Dutoit 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in the final of the men’s singles at the Central Valley club on Sunday. Coutts, a full-time coach in North Vancouver who was the recipient of a Gary Caron Tennis Professionals Associaton scholarship earlier this year, advanced to the men’s final, defeating his open doubles partner Manuel Calvo in straight sets. Coutts and Calvo, the No. 1 seeded doubles team, went on to defeat No. 2 Steve Deakin and Jerry Turek 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a tight men’s doubles final. In the women’s open singles, unseeded Trudie Du Toit, a former Pac-10 academic All-American at the University of Oregon, won the Burnaby title, defeating No. 1 seed Kelsey Anonsen 7-6, 6-1 in the championship final. Du Toit, an Abbotsford native, also knocked off the other top seeds en route to the final. The South African-born player advanced to the final with a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 3 Saroop Dhatt. In the quarter-finals, Du Toit defeated second-seeded Tracy Dong 6-1, 6-1. In other finals, Plamen Marinov defeated Jonathan Kooy 6-3, 6-2 in the men’s 4.5 singles final.

Elmer C. Estacio and Denny Permana teamed up for a 6-3, 6-2 win over Steven Ling Feng and Greg Rash in doubles. It took three sets for Andrea Frustaci to get the better of Kim Le in the women’s 4.5 singles final 6-4, 2-6, 7-6. Frustaci upset No. 2 seed Jenny Fu 6-3, 6-3 in a semifinal. Le knocked off top seed Tatiana Petrova 63, 6-3 to also advance. In the women’s 4.5 doubles final, No. 1 Kira Draliuk and Camila Prado beat second seeded Lauren Atkinson and Anna Elizabeth McAlpine 6-2, 61. In the 4.5 mixed doubles, unseeded Stephan Witijono and Jenny Hong cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 2 seeded Marshall Mackoff and Draliuk, the women’s doubles co-winner. Witijono and Hong upset the top-seeded pair of Mitchell Didcott and Eliza Rouse by a 6-2, 6-2 score. The Burnaby Open is the second largest tennis tournament in the Lower Mainland to only Stanley Park, drawing 350 entries and approximately 200 more junior players from under-10 to u-18. The tournament also drew two divisions of wheelchair tennis players. “We’re pretty much there. You don’t want to get that big, where you’re pushing players off site,” said tournament director Glenn Richards. “We still did well. This is probably the first time there wasn’t a drop or rain.”

A last-minute strike by Marco Sherwood of Burnaby gave Royal City Youth Soccer’s Westminster United under-15 boys’ team the Provincial Cup it wanted. United avenged an earlier 1-0 Coastal Cup loss to 4District rival Killarney All-Stars, defeating the East Vancouver side 3-2 in the championship final of the Les Sinott Memorial provincial soccer championship in Prince George on Sunday. Sherwood, a Burnaby Central Secondary School student who had two goals in the match, scored the game-winning goal, firsttiming a Daniel Johnson cross from 12 yards out into the far corner of the Killarney net with just four minutes left in regulation time. “It was a sweet, sweet victory,” said United coach Ed Zacharuk. “In the Coastal Cup we had five chances. In this one, we just finished off our chances and we could have had more. It was the determination of the boys, they really, really wanted it.” Sherwood headed in his first goal of the game on a Joe Finlay free kick midway through the second half that gave United a 2-1 lead.

Three Burnaby golfers qualify for junior nationals Tom Berridge

St. Thomas More grad Kevin Vigna lost in a three-way playoff at the B.C. junior boys’ golf championships at Revelstoke Golf Club last Friday. The 17-year-old Vancouver Golf Club member missed a 12foot putt on the 18th hole that would have given him the outright lead after finishing the final round in a six-under-par 66.

Kimberley’s Jare Dutoit went one shot better, tying a course record 65 to tie for the lead with Vigna and Vancouver 15-year-old Jordan Lu, all at 11-under-par. The three went to the par 4, 405-yard 16th hole to begin the playoff. Vigna missed the green on his approach with his second shot, and then left his chip to the flag short, settling for a bogey five. Dutoit chipped to within four feet of the cup and drained the

putt for the win. The three boys will now represent Team B.C. at the upcoming Canadian junior boys’ championship to be held in Grason, Ont. from July 30 to Aug. 2. Burnaby’s Lucas Gatto and Alan Tolusso finished in eighth and ninth place, respectively, to also qualify for the nationals. Alex François of Burnaby finished in a tie for 17th place, missing one of the 16 quota spots up to the nationals by a stroke.

Vigna opened the 72-hole championship with a one-under 71 on the 6,537-yard Revelstoke course. The incoming Simon Fraser University freshman shot even par in round 2 before finishing off with a 68 and 66. Gatto finished at par with a 288 total. Tulosso placed two shots back at 290. François, who, at 15, won the recent Gold Cup interclub competition at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, finished with a

six-over-par 294. Kevin Li of Burnaby finished in a tie for 37th place, while both Wyatt Racette and Leon Lee missed the cut. At the B.C. junior girls’ golf championships at the Belmont Golf Club in Victoria, 13-year-old Sumi François finished in sixth place with a 297 score on the par71, 5,814-yard Vancouver Island course. Jamie Oleksiew of Surrey won the girls’ title with a fourunder 280 score.

Cliff Avenue United lost a three-way tiebreaker on goals against and had to settle for a bronze medal at the Les Sinnott Provincial Cup championships. Cliff went on to score a 5-0 victory over Campbell River in the under-16 boys‘ consolation final in Prince George on Sunday. “Honestly, I was really proud of the boys and how they handled themselves there, and how they represented Cliff Avenue and Burnaby,” said coach Vito Lore. “We’re proud of our achievements. It’s the only trophy we didn’t win.” Earlier this season, the Cliff Avenue team won the regular season league, district and Coastal Cup titles. In the bronze-medal final, Yousif Masoud led the north Burnaby club up front, potting a pair of goals. Flavius Turdeanu, Kyle Whitehead and Michael Di
