Heights a hotbed for vehicle break-ins One resident has reported five break-ins in three weeks Brent Richter staff reporter
Residents in Burnaby Heights have noticed a rash of break-ins and vandalism of parked cars in recent weeks. “It’s happened five times to us in three weeks,” said Heights resident Trish Almeida. “We’re feeling frustrated.” Between friends and neighbours, Almeida said she is personally aware of at least 20 other incidents in the same time frame on Edinburgh Street, Gilmore Avenue, York Street and Oxford Street.
• Root Canal Treatment • Fixed & Removal Dentures • Crowns & Bridges • Orthodontics • Preventative Dentistry
Each time her car was targeted, thieves broke in by damaging the lock mechanism from the outside. Even though Almeida keeps nothing in her car to get stolen, it’s still costing her big time in insurance deductibles. Making repairs to the door and lock has cost her a $500 deductible after every break-in. Almeida has tried a number of different tactics to deter would-be thieves, including putting up signs and having her husband sleep in the living room to listen for the car alarm, but now you could say she’s switched from “prevention” to “harm reduction.” “After the first three, we put signs up that said ‘no cash or valuables in the vehicle,’” she said. “What we do now is leave the cars unlocked, obviously empty, and we opened
the glove box and everything so they see that there’s nothing in there.” Almeida said she would like to see some more presence from Burnaby RCMP, even if it is just one or two patrols through the neighbourhood at night in hopes that it may scare off whoever is targeting vehicles in the area. “At first (the RCMP) said, unfortunately, they can’t do anything, they don’t have enough staff, they don’t have enough patrol cars, and really it’s petty crime, I guess. But when it’s been five times in what is supposedly a safe neighbourhood, it does affect us. It’s a $500 deductible,” she said. Burnaby RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk said the detachment’s crime analyst Break-ins Page 4

It was about 1:30 a.m. on May 7 when Margarita Rivas’ 12-yearold son smelled smoke while watching TV. “He woke me, saying, ‘Mom, the fire alarm is going off,’” she said in a phone interview last Thursday. At first he thought it wasn’t a big deal, as fire alarms generally went off without incident at the Salish Villa apartment building at Kingsway and 19th Avenue, Rivas said. But as smoke spread throughout the building, he became concerned. Rivas, her son and her husband – who had arrived from Pakistan only three weeks before – went outside with the other building tenants. After 5 a.m., people were transported on an emergency bus and given hotel vouchers for the Best Western Kings Inn. Rivas had to take time off from her day job to look for a place last week. She was unable to find one right away because it was the middle of the month and most places weren’t renting till June 1. “I don’t know what I’ll do if I can’t find something,” she said. As of last week, she was trying to negotiate a time to go to the apartment building and retrieve what belongings she could, but she was unable to do so without a place to take them,

Penpals finally meet after 70 years Andrew Fleming staff reporter
Two lifelong friends finally had a chance to meet this month after nearly 70 years of corresponding together. Burnaby resident Muriel Corson, 78, was just a schoolgirl at David Lloyd George Elementary in Vancouver when she and her classmates were given the assignment of exchanging letters with students in England. Corson was randomly given one from a girl named Elsie and the two have kept in touch ever since “We wrote from the school in Chester to the school in Vancouver where she lived then,” said Elsie Bewley. “I was 11, she was 10-and-a-half and we’ve been writing to each other for 69 years and this is the first time we’ve met.” After decades of correspondence that saw the beginning and end of the Second World War and later marriage, children and eventually grandchildren, the two decided they weren’t getting any younger and that it was finally time to meet in the flesh. Bewley, who’d never been on board an airplane until this month, hopped on a flight to YVR and was met by her old and dear penpal at the arrivals gate. “She’s been very good to me, she and her husband Bill have been taking me out and about” said Bewley, who lost her own husband a decade ago. “This is my first time abroad anywhere. And being as I’ll be 80 in October, I’m not doing so bad.” Corson said that she’s enjoyed finally introducing her friend to the family she’s been describing in letters for so long. “We went to Stanley Park took her out to see my children, and had supper with my son,” said Corson. “She’s seen them all, I have three daughters and a son. We’ve been going for dinner and we’re thinking of taking her up to our cabin near Horseshoe Bay.” She said the two plan to keep in touch after Bewley returns to England, and have no intention of abandoning snail mail for email or attempting to talk face-to-face for free using Skype. “My son does all that, he’s very clever, but not me,” said Bewley. “I’m a bit too old for all that, I think.”

City stands firm on no-pigeons bylaw Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
Burnaby council passed a motion last Monday denying Sergio Batista’s request that the city amend its bylaws so that he could keep 10 pet pigeons at his residence. When contacted by the NOW last week, Batista said he wanted to speak with someone at the city before speaking with the media, as he wasn’t aware a decision was being made. Batista was charged with misuse of property by the city, he said in an earlier interview, and city staff told him that he had to get rid of the pigeons. The city filed a civil petition against Batista with the Supreme Court of British Columbia in February. The matter came before council last week, in a report from the city’s director of planning, recommending that the request be denied as the keeping 6

of pigeons for domestic or commercial purposes is already permitted in the agricultural and small holding districts zoning areas of Burnaby. Batista lives in the 8000-block of 11th Ave. in an R10 residential district. Mayor Derek Corrigan had told the NOW in a previous interview that it was unlikely such a request would be granted. “Council has been pretty firm about not wanting to expand the bylaw,” he said. “I don’t know if there’s going to be any changes to council’s inclination on that.” The report listed noise and odour, pests, disease, and abandoned or at-large pigeons as reasons for denying the request. The city says it took action against Batista after receiving a complaint from a neighbour. Complaints about Batista’s pigeons were first Pigeons Page 4

Break-ins: Burnaby RCMP targeting ‘prolific offenders’ in crime spike continued from page 1
has reviewed the number of reports from the area and found a spike in “theft from auto” incidents, albeit not quite as large as what Almeida has noticed. Year-to-date there have been 10 reports, which is an increase, but Gresuik said some of the other crimes Almeida mentioned could have gone unreported to the police or classified as something other than theft from auto depending on the circumstances. Gresuik said Burnaby RCMP is now working on the matter. “We are aware of the crime spike, and we are

directed to Burnaby’s bylaw department in June 2009, according to the bylaw office. Batista told the NOW previously that he has had pigeons for 20 years and lived in different communities throughout the Lower Mainland without a problem. “Then, all of a sudden, they said I can’t have it,” he said of the City of Burnaby. The neighbour who complained can’t be sure it was his pigeons that were defecating on the neighbour’s property, Batista said. He hasn’t lived long at the home on 11th Avenue but has lived in Burnaby with his pets before without a problem, he added. He wasn’t aware that there would be an issue when he moved his family and pets to the neighbourhood, Batista said. Batista belongs to a club of people who own racing pigeons. He said other members throughout the Lower Mainland keep pigeons in their backyards. His pigeons are temporarily being kept in another municipality. Fire: Donations for families continued from page 1
Rivas said. Rivas had found a place by Tuesday but said she can’t move in until June 1. She is staying at a hotel until then. As of Thursday, eight families were moved to the Happy Days Inn with funds from the community after provincial emergency program money ran out that day. Thirteen families were initially displaced, but five found housing before the weekend. Since then, five families found housing over the weekend, two had tentatively found housing as of Monday, and one family was still looking, according to BurnabyEdmonds MLA Raj Chouhan’s constituency assistant Laarni de los Reyes. Chouhan was part of a group of community members working to help the families this past week. The plight of the families spurred a community-wide effort to help them find housing, according to Doreen George, the coordinator of Edmonds Community School. “The community has really come together for this,” she said. Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian has also been involved, as well as City of Burnaby staff, representatives from the Deer Lake Rotary Club, the provin-
cial Victims Assistance Program, South Burnaby Neighbourhood House and The Helping Families in Need Society. The three-alarm fire took place on the third floor of the Edmonds apartment building at 1:40 a.m. on May 7, according to Burnaby Fire Lieutenant Miles Ritchie. A cause had not been confirmed as of press time. There were two rescues, Ritchie said, totaling four adults and two kids. “The guys did a good job,” he added, “keeping it in the original suite and the one next to it.” South Burnaby Neighbourhood House is collecting monetary donations for the families affected by the fire. Contact the office at 604-431-0400 or go to 4845 Imperial St. to drop off donations. Cheques should be made out to South Burnaby Neighbourhood House, with Edmonds Fire in the memo section, to indicate the purpose of the donation. Donations over $15 are tax-deductible. Families also need clothing and household items, such as kitchen sets and bedroom suites, as they find permanent housing. Donations can be made to the Helping Families in Need Society. For more information, go to www.helpingfamiliesinneed. org or call 604-294-3087.

and loved ones,” Clark said during her announcement. The tone of Monday’s news marks a welcome change from provincial policy makers. B.C. has tried to hit smokers over the head with the big stick of costs. There have been several increases to the provincial tobacco tax over the years, but little investment to help individuals quit smoking. Increasing a “sin tax” won’t stop people from smoking.
It just creates an underground economy for the products. B.C. residents are paying regardless of whether they puff. Health-care costs directly related to smoking that are covered by the Ministry of Health are pegged at $605 million per year. Rather than beating smokers into submission, this program will serve as an enticement to them to kick the habit. It seems as though common sense is finally clearing this hazy issue.

Dear Editor:
As a member of a visible minority, I grew up in the 1970s and ’80s in Metro Vancouver with racial slurs embedded in my psyche as I was always under the assumption that it is normal to be treated with disrespect because I am not white. I remember coming home from kindergarten crying to my immigrant parents asking them why God had not made our family white because the tormenting at school was unbearable for me and my friends. Although attitudes towards racism have thankfully changed generally for the better, I still get the same sickening feeling I used to get as a child when-

ever an ignorant person makes a racially bigoted comment or slur even today. I am now getting the same sickening feeling in my stomach as I see opposition being expressed by parents to the school board’s draft policy 5.45. The policy aimed at creating a framework to combat harassment and bullying of LGBTQ students in a society where it has become as acceptable to insult others by calling them “gay” or “faggot” as it once was for people to call me a “Paki,” “Punjab” or “Hindoo” as I walked down the street. Parents morally opposing the policy with the argument that it is the domain of parents and not schools to teach kids what is right and wrong have not fully considered what they are saying. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Students deserve rights continued from page 6
violence and bullying is wrong in our society, why is it not OK for schools to teach that? Would those parents not want schools to help them reinforce in our children the values of respect and dignity for all members of our society? By opposing such a policy, it seems to me that parents want their children to be able to target others that are different for bullying based on their own “religious morals.” Maybe their religious morals allow for bullying to take place? If they are concerned about their children somehow becoming sexually confused by being exposed to the fact that LGBTQ people exist in the world, I have some news for them; nobody had to teach me and tell me that I am supposed to be attracted to people of the opposite sex. My natural heterosexual feelings have not become confused by my knowing that people of a different sexual orientation exist in our society. Sexual orientation is not something we choose, and nothing that anybody says or does will change my sexual orientation. Unfortunately for many LGBTQ students, they may not have the ability to cry to their parents (like I did when I was racially targeted) due to their fear that their parents may not accept them for who they are. LGBTQ students live in an unforgiving society at a point in their lives when they are trying to learn and live a normal life like any other child. I feel that the Burnaby school board’s draft policy 5.45 is a positive step towards helping to create a positive learning environment for all children, and no argument based on “moral” grounds should override the right of an individual to feel safe from bullying. Harmel Guram, Burnaby
Liberty must be guaranteed Dear Editor,
Although I find the private sexual behavior of gays repulsive, my fierce belief in personal liberty sides with the proposed positive-gay policy of the Burnaby school board. Therefore, I was dismayed by the picture on the front page of the Friday, May 13 paper. After looking at it for a few moments, a refrain from a ’60s song, illustrating the futility of war, but also applicable to this situation, came to mind. It goes,”When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn.” And thank you for your editorial. I only hope that some of the people in that picture can and will read it. Beginning with the Magna Carta of 1215, and later developed by people like Locke, Hume, Kant and Mill, the concept of personal liberty has come a long way and has been enshrined in current law. As John Stuart Mill so eloquently wrote in 1869, “The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of the community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others.” This, in essence, is our social contract; this is how we get along. It the basis of a civilized society. Religious dogmas have no place in that discussion, no matter which dogma is waved under my nose, whether it is it a dogma to burn people on a stake for translating the Bible, or flying airplanes into buildings to please a particular god. Rather, it is a matter of human rights. I hope the school board has the wisdom and courage to go ahead with this policy and thereby guarantee the personal liberty of gay students. Policy: Time to do what’s right continued from page 6
We’ve had enough suicides based on homophobia – we don’t need any more. We do not need more tormented and grieving families. It’s time to do what’s right, it’s time to do what’s needed. Instead of sitting around and complaining about what the policy isn’t going to do, stand up for what it will do. I’ve started a GayStraight Alliance (GSA) in my school, and within
the course of one year, it’s grown from eight to over 20 members. Our school library now has its own designated GLBT section, books that are marked to give students a better time of finding them. We had a successful two-day event, with many students showing support – the last day being a school-wide day of silence, which was very successful in the whole. I know this is something not all schools have, whether through diffi-
culty or because it’s simply denied. The policy will give the right to a GSA. This policy is absolutely required, and it’s about time people stop being so hateful and hurtful to their fellow human beings for a difference they cannot help. It’s time to stop being ignorant to the truth, and to deny the protection and rights GLBTQ+ staff and students need. New faces on school board slate Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
Harman Pandher and Meiling Chia have been nominated by the Burnaby Citizens Association to run for Burnaby school board in the municipal election in November. The association’s slate for both the school board and city council was approved at a meeting on Saturday, May 14. All of the current councillors and Mayor Derek Corrigan are running again, according to the association’s president Gord Larkin. The other four candidates for the two vacant spots on the school board slate were Cherene Groundwater,
who was recently New WestminsterBurnaby MP Peter Julian’s campaign manager; Kaitlin Burnett, a community activist; Katy Alkins-Jang, a Burnaby parks commissioner; and Ramsan Anjum. Pandher was raised in Burnaby and graduated from Cariboo Hill Secondary, according to a press release from the association. He is a schoolteacher in Surrey and lives in Burnaby with his family. Pandher previously served on the board at South Burnaby Neighbourhood House and has been involved with the Burnaby Multicultural Society. Chia is from Taiwan and also works in Surrey, at the Canada Revenue
Agency’s Taxation Centre. She has been actively involved with the parent advisory committee at her daughter’s school in Burnaby. The current trustees running again are Larry Hayes, chair of the board; Baljinder Narang, vice-chair of the board; Ron Burton; James Wang; and Gary Wong. Trustees Tony Coccia and Diana Mumford chose not to run for the board again in the upcoming election. Both chose not to comment on why they weren’t running when contacted by the NOW in early April. Coccia was elected in 2005 and reelected in 2008. Mumford has been a school trustee for nine years. www.twitter.com/janayafe

The recipients of this year’s Youth Citizenship Awards are: Madison Arrotta, Kasra Azodi-Deylami, Brett Boland, Jerome Brathwaite, Priscilla Chen, Chelsey Darocha, Drucilla Dunn, Taylor Dunne, Rashmeen Kambo, Lynda-Marie McLeod, Irene Maravilla, Avery Marte, Celina Martin, Jessica Martinez, Niku Monavari, Annabel Ng, Naomi Richardson, Shima Sharif, Jennifer Shih, Richard Steer, Samantha Stewart, Benjamin Stolb,
Caitlynn Sturm and Nana Lena Takahara. Six nominees also received $100 bursaries: Steven Cayer, Letitia Chu, Kevin Hua, Sweetha Mahendran, Jenny Wu and Tiffany Yang. It is always a pleasant duty to award the future leaders of tomorrow, Mayor Derek Corrigan said, noting he had also given out certificates to Burnaby’s young Snow Angel volunteers earlier in the day. The recipient’s parents were also to be congratulated, he added, for raising people who help the community. “They’ve given them the right foundation and values,” he said. “That’s what I love to see.” www.twitter.com/janayafe

Portrait of an artist: Arnie Nouwens is surrounded by his work in his Burnaby apartment. On the wall are pieces from his new Abstract in Nature series, two of which will be on display in the Federation of Canadian Artists’ Canvas Unbound show, opening May 31.
Finding joy through art Julie MacLellan staff reporter
Arnie Nouwens can’t help getting emotional when he talks about his life as an artist. No words can really express what it means to him to be doing what he is, because he knows how much this life would have meant to his father. Nouwens was one of eight children, born and originally raised in Holland. His father was a talented artist, he says, but never had a chance to really pursue his talents. “He couldn’t paint because he had eight children to raise,” Nouwens says. “What has manifested is that I am living his dreams.” The walls of his Burnaby apartment are testament to that fact, filled as they are with the colourful paintings that represent various phases of Nouwens’ artistic life. Nouwens has a couple of recent accomplishments on his artistic resumé. He just won a $1,000 prize in the recent Experience the Culture Art Show, a celebration of Ukrainian culture, for his painting of two young Ukrainian dancers. He was also just accepted as a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and has two new works from his Abstract in
Nature series in an upcoming Canvas Unbound exhibition at the federation’s gallery on Granville Island. Now that spring has arrived, he’s also spending his weekends at Stanley Park, selling his artwork. “It’s been a trip,” he says with a smile. It’s been a long and not always easy journey for Nouwens, who’s been in Canada since he moved here with his family in 1954, at the age of nine. His early art training came from his father and, soon after high school, Nouwens landed a job as a junior artist for Woodward’s Department Stores. After that, he moved on to become an art director for an advertising agency, working in various art director positions for 20 years. In 1994 he and his son, Tyler, formed Nouwens Graphic Arts Inc., going into business for themselves. “I painted a little bit along the way,” he says. But, generally, he left his painting untouched – until some changes in his personal life sent him into a dark and difficult period. “The art had left me,” he says. “I didn’t even pick up a pencil.” It was his son who urged him to get back to art – and, when he did, Nouwens felt like a beginner.

Joy: Arnie Nouwen’s winning painting Colours of Dance.
“It was like starting all over again,” he says. “It was such a humbling experience.”
It was six years ago that he started painting again. Over the years since, he’s had a number of exhibitions – at the Ferry Building Gallery in West Vancouver and the Seymour Gallery in Deep Cove, and in art festivals in a variety of locations. It was several weeks ago that he got an email from someone who had seen his website, telling him about the Experience the Culture painting contest and urging him to enter. An art patron was offering a $1,000 commission to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Victoria-based Ukrainian dance group Veselka Dance. Nouwens checked it out and decided to enter, even though he doesn’t usually enter contests. “It just touched a chord in me. I felt so connected to it,” he says. He spent a great deal of time in research, watching videos of Ukrainian dancing and looking up costume details so that his painting would be as accurate as possible. The end result, Colours of Dance, captures the joy of dancing – depicting two young dancers, a boy and a girl, with the girl in the foreground and the boy leaping behind her in a move dubbed “the backbreaker.” “The kids aspire to that,” he notes. “It Nouwens Page 16

I
Chef Dez
love being a chef. Food is a universal language that touches the lives of almost everyone. No matter what road of life one travels along, chances are they have an appreciation for a good meal. If you know me and my wife, Katherine, you will know of our love for not only food but also for music. Recently we had the pleasure of being introduced to country music legend Toby Keith while he was in town for his American Ride tour. Toby Keith has taken his love for food and paired it with the success of his hit single I Love This Bar to create a chain of restaurants aptly named I Love This Bar & Grill. These popular honky-tonk style restaurants are dotted across the U.S.A., and his tenth location will soon be opening in Boston. Although we have not personally visited any of his locations as of yet, they
are definitely on our radar in the near future. When inquiring about any recipes from the menu he could share with my readers, we were provided with the following two. They may require a bit of improvisation on your part, depending on the ingredients available where you live, but creativity is half the fun about cooking. The other half is “drinking beer from a mason jar” while doing so. Southwest Cream Corn 2 bags of frozen corn 1 oz of bacon grease 1 corn set (see note below) 1/4 cup of Cowboy Blend (proprietary) or use favourite pepper seasoning. 1.5 lb. of cream cheese (1.5inch squares) 1/2 quart of half and half 6 strips of bacon (diced 1/4 inch) Place diced bacon and bacon grease in a large braising skillet, and cook over medium heat until done. Add remaining corn set and cook until peppers become tender. Add corn and cook until it begins to thaw. Stir in cream cheese, then add half and half Spread seasoning over
mixture and blend. Cook until texture is to your liking, approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Note: Corn Set 2 poblano peppers 2 red bell peppers (diced 1/4 inch) 2 white onions (diced 1/4 inch) Fry poblano peppers for 1 minute. Under running warm water, run your hand down outside of poblano to remove skin. Dice poblano peppers into half-inch pieces and mix all ingredients for set. ◆ Fried bologna sandwich We use a five-inch round chub of bologna and slice it 1/2 thick. Cook sliced bologna in a skillet or on a flat top grill until it starts to blacken or turn up on the edges. Serve on a hamburger bun with Toby’s Signature BBQ Sauce (sold in Toby’s I Love This Bar & Grill), a 1/4 cup of shredded jack and cheddar cheese mix, and top with two slices of tomato and shredded lettuce. Add mayo if you like. Send your food/cooking questions to dez @chefdez. com. Visit him at www. chefdez.com.

id you know that there is an International Safer Internet Day? Me neither. But I received a news release about it with some guidelines for parents that make a lot of sense. So, although we missed the actual day, let’s take a look at some basic common-sense messages about keeping our kids safe online. It would be nice to suggest that the easy way is to simply keep the kids away from the technology, but that’s not going to happen. It’s imperative that our kids learn how to effectively and safely use technology if they are going to
be prepared for school, for post-secondary education and for the workplace. Safer Internet use is all about parental involvement: setting guidelines and being involved and guiding your child in the online world the same way you do in their everyday lives. You need to be involved in their Internet use. At the same time, you need to respect their privacy. Their email, texts and instant messages are private.
General recommendations: ◆ Educate yourself about the Internet. It’s important to be knowledgeable about the Internet, because even if you don’t have a computer at home, your child can access it at school, at a friend’s house, or at your public library. ◆ Create a family agreement for Internet use,

A computer (iPad, tablet, phone or whatever) in the bedroom at night is a bad idea. They may spend hours online instead of sleeping. ◆ Look at the sites your child/teen visits. Have them show you their favourites and discuss why they chose those sites. ◆ Understand, however, that they will likely not want to ‘friend’ you on their social networking sites. Think about it; that is the equivalent of your parents listening in on all your conversations with friends. How would you have felt as a teen if that were happening? ◆ Set up your computer to

Nouwens: ‘It’s just been wonderful’ continued from page 11
really touched a chord with them.” Around the same time, Nouwens also decided to at last apply for membership in the Federation of Canadian Artists – something he’d always considered doing but had never worked up the nerve to do. Two of his newest works, part of a new abstract series, will now be on display at the federation gallery starting May 31. Nouwens admits he was nervous about the abstracts because they were a departure from any of his previous styles. He started out with portraits, with a series of jazz legends – originally inspired by Louis Armstrong, whom Nouwens met as a boy – having been one of his earliest successes. He then moved into landscapes, which he confesses he has always found challenging. The nature-based abstracts were just another step in his ever-evolving artistic style. “It keeps changing,” he says. “I can’t stay with a style. I love it, I do it, then I have to move on.” Now, around his other painting – which he pretty much does full-time during the
week, with the exception of his Friday golf days – he’s joining the artists who sell their wares in Stanley Park on weekends. And, though he notes that some of the artists are lamenting the passing of the “glory days” when they were rushed off their feet selling to American tourists, Nouwens sees every day as a positive one. “I’m having fun,” he says. “It’s important to have fun. People don’t have to cut off their ears to be successful. … I’m living my dreams. I’m doing what a love to do.” There’s not a day passes, he says, that he isn’t grateful for that fact. “I feel like I’m entering another phase of my life,” he says with a smile. “It’s like the fruition of all my efforts. For me, it’s grace. It’s all grace. It’s just been wonderful.” ◆ The Federation of Canadian Artists’ Canvas Unbound exhibition is on at its gallery on Granville Island, 1241 Cartwright St., close to Opus Art Supplies and Emily Carr University. It’s open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 31 to June 12. For more about Nouwens, check out www. thedutchmaster.myartchannel.com or e-mail arnie@thedutchmaster.com.

s lot sizes continue to shrink, plants, which give several pleasures, become more valuable. A few, such as chives, are useful in different places: in the kitchen, as fresh cut flowers, as dried flowers and outside as a pretty border edging. Chives accept most soils and have a very long harvest. The mild, onionflavoured leaves pop up in February and can be cut until frost. With small clumps, it’s best to cut about one-third of the leaves each time to keep fresh leaves coming. Like many other leafy herbs, chives love sunshine but tolerate semi-shade. The stems are sturdy, allowing the beautiful, pinkish-mauve ball-head flowers to be dried just by standing them in a vase without water. Mint is another popular flavour enhancer for salads, sauce, teas and vegetables. It can be picked from March to frost if you cut repeatedly to ensure tender, fresh leaves. One of

Rosemary is a musthave herb producing aromatic spiky leaves for meat and vegetable dishes and lovely blue flowers in early spring. It’s best in well-drained containers because it almost always needs to be brought inside for winter. Send gardening questions to amarrison@shaw.ca.

the prettiest kinds is golden-variegated ginger mint. This has a spicy mint taste and is relatively dwarf. Containers are really the only place for mint – but even here it may make a prison break through drainage holes. Golden oregano retains its colour (and flavour) best in full sun. It’s very dwarf and enhances garden beds by softening edges or spilling down retaining walls. Another golden spiritlifter is the golden variegated form of lemon balm. The flavour is milder than the green one, but in spring it looks spectacular. It self-seeds if you let it. Sage is a low, sunloving bush available in several hues other than plain green. There’s the hardy purple sage, the tri-colour sage with leaves of green, white and pink and a golden-variegated sage which may succumb in severe winters. Mauve flower spikes are easy on the eye, and the leaves are delicious (in small quantities) to flavour food. For delicate filigree foliage, dill is a fast-growing foil for more solid plants. Dill makes masses of seeds which volunteer freely outside and store well. Intricate and useful leaves make the curly-leaf parsley a nice edging for

Hyacks win high school district track and field title New Westminster Secondary won the combined Burnaby/New Westminster high school district track and field championships at Swangard Stadium last week. The Hyacks garnered 829 points to win the overall aggregate title over Burnaby South by almost 200 points. Burnaby North was a distant third with 461 total points. Glenbrook Middle School placed fifth overall, with its 282.50 total points all amassed in a runaway victory in the bantam division. New Westminster won both the senior and junior divisions handily,
beating runner-up South at the grades 11 and 12 level and North in the Grade 10 age class, respectively. South had a strong showing at the juvenile level, defeating New West by 125 points in the combined scoring. The zone qualifying meet for the B.C. high school track and field championships, including Richmond, Burnaby and New Westminster, takes place today (Wednesday) at the Minoru Oval in Richmond. Qualifying begins at 2 p.m. and runs until 6. Track events are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. The B.C. championships will be held at Swangard Stadium on June 3 and 4.
Burnaby squandered a three-goal lead in a second-half collapse against the Victoria Shamrocks in B.C. Junior Lacrosse League play Sunday. “We gotta learn how to close out teams,” said junior A Lakers head coach John Wilson. “If we score a couple more goals, that buries them. But we just didn’t do that.” The Lakers looked good in the opening period and a half, taking a 5-2 lead on the first two of three goals by Ryan Watson and solid goaltending by secondyear Patrick Bayliss. But, the Victoria club, made up of a core group from last year’s provincial intermediate championship team, kept working hard, outscoring the host Lakers 6-1 in the latter half of the match. Watson’s final tally of the game closed the deficit to 7-6 in the final five minutes of play. Watson leads the Lakers with a team-high 10 goals. Burnaby outshot the Shamrocks 55-38 but had a dickens of a time beating Scott Bannister. The Victoria keeper stopped 49 shots, including 19 in the final frame. “We got ahead of ourselves with that lead,” said Burnaby captain Ryan Spelling. “We thought we had it. We can’t take anything for granted. That’s what happened, we just let up.” Burnaby was collectively slower to the loose balls and for the most part chose to shoot the ball from the outside rather than follow the game plan, said Wilson. Spelling added that has to change. “Our mental focus has to be there 100 per cent of the time to win. Those lazy mistakes cost us,” he said.
