siz, Harrison Hot Springs and Hope had to travel even farther. “Midwifery care is just very difficult to access,” said Mount. “Our waitlists are often longer than our actual clients lists. It’s crazy and I think it was last year that midwives delivered 15 per cent of all babies in Fraser Health.” There are only about 150 midwives in British Columbia spread all over the province and there is certainly more demand than they can keep up with. Registered midwives are primary health care providers who provide pregnant women with prenatal care. Midwives also attend women
he B.C. government is seeking to forfeit three properties, four vehicles and three boats from two Chilliwack residents it alleges have violated their medicinal-marijuana licences. Ken Blais and Ursula Walker had two medicinal marijuana-production licences allowing them to produce pot at a property on Cultus Lake Road. The licences together allowed them to grow and cultivate a maximum of 74 marijuana plants, according to court documents. Acting on a tip from a confidential source, two dozen police officers from the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team, the Abbotsford police department and the Chilliwack RCMP raided the home on June 3 and found more than 450 plants. Police also seized 20,000 ecstasy pills, approximately one ounce of cocaine and small amounts of methamphetamines, along with two guns and a bullet proof vest. Street value for the ecstasy was pegged at $60,400 and the marijuana had a street value at about $126,000, according to police. Three men, a woman and a 15year-old teenage boy were arrested during the raid. Charges are pending against four of those arrested. The police estimated that more than $6,000 in hydro fees per billing period were charged to the

o say that mothers-to-be in Chilliwack have been underserviced when it comes to midwifery care would be an understatement. That’s because until Joy Allan and Cheryl Mount came to town, there hasn’t been any midwives here at all. “We found there was a gap in services and a real need for midwifery care based out of Chilliwack,” Allan told the Times in an interview. “Right now in Abbotsford, about 40 per cent of the clients come from Chilliwack and that told us there
Chilliwack’s first midwifery clinic fills important Fraser Valley need
was a real need and we were very keen to fill it.” Mount and Allan opened Cheam Midwifery on Main Street downtown on May 1 and started prenatal appointments on June 1. Prior to starting the clinic both worked with Valley Midwifery Group in Abbotsford, a clinic run by Kim Campbell. Because of the longterm nature of midwifery care, the two have a transitional period as the Chilliwack clinic starts up and they continue to work for Camp-
bell until two replacement midwives are in place. But there was and is such a lack of services in the eastern Fraser Valley that the Chilliwack clinic is not competing with clinics in Abbotsford and Mission. It’s taking up the slack. “Until now, if pregnant women in Chilliwack wanted a midwife they had to travel to Abbotsford for all their prenatal appointments,” said Allan. in labour and deliver babies. They then remain primary health care providers for the woman and her baby for the first six weeks after the birth, according to Allan. At that point the woman and baby return to the care of their family physician. Midwives deliver babies in hospital but also provide women the option of delivering at home. Allan said she was quite happy with the support from the local hospital and local doctors who provide maternity care. “Definitely the obstetrical care providers in Chilliwack have been more than supportive,” she said. “The three OBs in town have put their support behind us and have recognized it as a gap.” Tanesha Vaughan lives in Chilliwack and will be giving birth to her second child any day now. She has seen Mount and Allan for midwifery care at the Abbotsford clinic but wishes there had been a local clinic when she was first pregnant. “I’d definitely use them again,” she said, adding that she didn’t plan on having any more children. “Now that there is another office, it will allow more people to experience it.” Because of waiting lists at Valley Midwifery, Vaughan was only able to get in for the last half of her pregnancy. Mount and Allan have been open for just a few weeks, they have done no advertising except for a Facebook page and they are taking clients now who are due to give birth in January 2012 or later. And already they have a waiting list for February 2012. ◗ Visit www.cheam-midwifery.com for information on the clinic.

Lockout halts mail delivery
BY TYLER OLSEN tolsen@chilliwacktimes.com
M
ail delivery ground to a halt Tuesday night after Canada Post locked out its employees in the face of rotating strike action. That has local postal workers upset and hoping an agreement can be reached soon that will see them back delivering the mail. “We don’t want to be out. We want to be delivering the letters,” said Peter Butcher, the president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers Upper Fraser Valley local. Prior to Tuesday night’s lockout, Canada Post had cut delivery to urban centres, including Chilliwack north of Highway 1, to three days a week. That led to information pickets being set up outside of the Chilliwack Canada Post
outlet Tuesday afternoon. Residents in Sardis, Rosedale and Agassiz had continued to receive five-days-a-week mail because the postal workers who service those areas have a different contract with Canada Post, but that mail delivery has also come to a halt. In Ottawa, Canadian Union of Postal Workers president Denis Lemelin said the union will request a meeting with Canada Post CEO Deepak Chopra to get a “commitment” from the Crown corporation that it will allow postal workers to continue delivering socialassistance cheques despite the shutdown. He said the union will also ask to have its collective agreement reinstated so that workers can return to work and negotiations can continue.

THERMAGE Q & A ®
Question: I have heard there is a non-surgical neck and facelift called Thermage® – is it safe and does it work? Tracy, Surrey Answer: Thermage® is a non-invasive treatment for tightening loose and sagging skin. The most common areas treated are forehead, around the eyes, the mid and lower face and the neck. After one treatment results appear gradually over a 6 month period. Typically there is no downtime required.
We are finding that Thermage® treatments used in conjunction with Botox, Fillers and Fraxel® create dramatic improvements to achieve a more youthful appearance. At our office we refer to the combination of Fraxel® and Thermage® as “the facelift bypass procedure”.

MARIJUANA, from page 1 property, with Blais being the current hydro subscriber. The notice of civil claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court says the director of civil forfeiture believes the property was used to store and traffic marijuana, ecstasy and cocaine. “The director says that, at all material times, the defendants were aware of the unlawful activity being undertaken at the properties and that they directly benefited from same,” says the lawsuit. The director alleges that the properties, vehicles and boats are “instruments of unlaw-
ful activity” and should be forfeited. According to the lawsuit, Blais, who is identified as a hairdresser and/or self-employed, is the owner of a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado and a 2006 Hummer. Walker, also a hairdresser, is said to be the registered owner of two Mini Coopers. Blais is said to share ownership with his son of the three boats. The two other properties include another home on Cultus Lake Road and a home on Chilliwack Mountain Road. No statements of defence have been filed. The defendants could not be reached. A notice of civil claim contains allegations that have not been proven in court. – with files from Tyler Olsen, Chilliwack Times

The letter, Strahl told Parliament, “was written by the local Chamber of Commerce, put on its letterhead and put on its website, because it wanted everyone to know about its position on this issue. “Some of the most prominent members of the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce are also prominent members of the local federal Liberal association. In a press release, Chilliwack’s new MP expressed enthusiasm about his new duties. “My grandfathers both served in the Canadian Forces, and I grew up in a community that had a strong military presence,” said Strahl. He added: “Every Canadian is affected by our health care system and Canada’s health related regulations. “There are numerous, high profile issues that will need to be considered by the

Donor breast milk at CGH First site in Fraser Health W to operate dispensary
h e n b a by L u re sa was born last month at Chilliw a c k G e n e r a l Ho s p i t a l (CGH), her mother’s milk was slow to come in, and she would have had to go without the health benefits of mother’s milk if it wasn’t for a new Fraser Health pilot project. Thanks to the new Donor Breast Milk Dispensary, the hospital was able to provide Luresa with safe, nourishing milk six times during her critical first few days of life. CGH is the first site in Fraser Health to offer nutrientrich mother’s milk to babies through the Donor Breast Milk Dispensary, a threemonth pilot project that will run until August. The donated milk,
screened and pasteurized by the Milk Bank at B.C. Women’s Hospital in Vancouver, is available with a doctor’s referral as an alternative to formula, which lacks some of the benefits of breast milk The milk is shipped frozen from Vancouver to the CGH maternity unit and kept frozen until it is needed by a newborn. CGH was keen to run the pilot program, part of Fraser Health’s Baby Friendly initiative, because of strong local support for the option of mother’s milk—a safe, nutritional food for young infants.
Once the project is complete in August, health officials will review the data to see if the service could be made available at other Fraser Health sites. Through the Donor Breast Milk Dispensary pilot, the health authority aims to increase the use of donor milk, decrease the use of formula supplements and increase milk donations from the community. Mothers who would like to know more about donating milk to B.C. Women’s Hospital’s Milk Bank—the only milk bank in Canada—can call the Chilliwack Health Unit at 604-702-4920.

B.C. Court of Appeal panel has upheld a ruling finding liability against a Chilliwack school teacher for a student’s field hockey injury but has reduced the amount of the $1.3-million award. Devon Hussack was a 13-year-old Chilliwack student playing field hockey in 1998 when he was struck in the face during a physical education class by a female student
who was winding up to take a shot. He suffered a concussion that developed into a serious “somatoform disorder.” Those suffering from the disorder are often referred to as hypochondriacs. At trial, a B.C. Supreme Court judge found the P.E. teacher was negligent and awarded damages of $1,365,000. The Chilliwack School District appealed but three judges of the B.C. Court of Appeal have upheld the liability finding of the trial judge, but reduced the award to $1.1 million.

Measles could have killed me I nearly died. I think. At least that’s how I remember it. Sort of. I can’t remember much of it. I know people whose memories go all the way back beyond their second birthday. Me? I’ve got a couple of memories that I can trace back to five . . . maybe four. And one of those is a hazy blotch of visuals and feelings from when I had the measles. Strangely, I remember feeling—all at the same time—warm and close to my mother, and also scared and distant, with an odd feeling like I was disappearing (at least, that’s how I interpret that fuzzy memory-feeling now). And that’s about all I can pull out of my own head today. I also remember that it was New Year’s Eve… although, I’m not actually sure that it really was. It was round about that time of year, though. I know that from the bits and pieces of stories I heard years later—the kinds of nebulous stories that float in and around families to remind us of who we are and the ties that bind us to each other. You know . . . what sociologists would probably call family folk history, or some other similar term. I don’t recall anyone ever talking directly about that night, but the subject of how dreadfully ill I was did surface as addenda to other stories from time to time.
BOB GROENEVELD
Odd Thoughts There were stories that included a hospital visit and an oxygen tent and parents and siblings fearful for my (unlikely) future. The hospital and oxygen tent really hit home many years later, when I realized that my close encounter with my own mortality must have occurred before universal, government-funded health care. You have to understand that my parents were not rich. They had recently left Holland with very little (born here, I was our first official Canadian citizen)—and although there was a lot of hope and prospects for prosperous futures in Canada, drawing tens of thousands of immigrants like my family, the reality was that, by today’s standards, rural Canada was a Third World country—a developing country suffering a lot of post-war growing pains. Indeed, we were poor. And although I know—have always known—that my parents loved me dearly, I must have been extremely ill for them to scrape together the money for hospital
treatment. They must have been incredibly scared for my survival. It was never, in my entire life, said out loud to me . . . but I can impute from tangential evidence that I probably would have died without that dramatic intervention. The measles probably would have killed me. That’s why today’s anti-vaccination trend, fueled by charlatans and idiots preying on ignorance, flabbergasts me. I do not get it. It’s not just measles, although it is the potentially deadly outbreak running through Quebec that brings my own past back to mind. I’m one of those people who have an irrational fear of needles. I don’t understand it. They don’t hurt (much), and through the years, they have undoubtedly saved me from a whole storehouse of uncomfortably hazy memories— or no memories at all! The only thing that I know to be more irrational than my fear of needles is that parents today would risk putting their children—for want of a simple vaccination— through a near-death experience like mine. Perhaps it’s because the vaccinations they received when they were children spared them such memories of their own. ◗ Visit Bob Groeneveld’s blog, Editor’s Notes, at http://tiny.cc/v7b94 at www.langleyadvance.com
he HST referendum is effectively underway right now. Here’s the question: “Are you in favour of extinguishing the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and reinstating the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) in conjunction with the GST (Goods and Services Tax)? (Yes/No).” Actually, it’s a straightforward question. You can vote Yes to “extinguish” (kill, drop, end, remove, dump . . . replace with your own euphemism, if you wish) the HST. Or you can vote No to “not extinguish” it (keep it). But with all the noise about how difficult it is, some folks may start thinking it really is more difficult than it seems—and they may begin to second-guess their response. The referendum process is easy, too. Elections BC was to begin mailing out ballots on June 13, and most eligible voters in the province are expected to receive them by June 24. Those who don’t get their ballots by then need to get in touch with Elections BC by July 8. The only tough part: marked ballots need to be back to Elections BC by July 22, whether or not there is a postal strike. The hardest part of it all is trying to understand the potential impacts of extinguishing or not extinguishing the HST—far more difficult than that actual referendum question itself. The government has had nearly a year to explain, and still hasn’t done so sufficiently. Premier Christy Clark’s 11th-hour manipulations to convince taxpayers to vote No have served to make it still more difficult to calculate ramifications. And has Opposition Leader Adrian Dix got a hidden agenda for the PST? Or is that more BC Liberal hype? It’s expected to take weeks to count the referendum ballots—results aren’t expected to be announced before Aug. 11. Here’s hoping the results are as confusing as the question—and not as confusing as the politicians have made it.

Why doesn’t U.S. dollar parity and HST lower prices? Editor: I am confused but mostly angry and starting to get frantic. Mine is a single income household. Most of my “career” has been working with the general public so I’m living on survival wages. My small pay cheque is gone before I get it. There are no tips at my job. I haven’t bought any meat since February. I haven’t bought clothes this year. Why? Because I can’t afford them. There are a lot of things I need but I just can’t find any money to buy them. Yet, I keep hearing how the HST savings are being passed on to the consumer. Where? Just because they say it, doesn’t make it so. Our dollar has been worth more than the U.S. dollar for a while now, but I see nothing dropping in price to reflect that parity. Can anyone point out to me anything, anything at all, that has dropped in price since this time last year when the HST was introduced and our dollar became the same as the U.S. dollar? It seems to me that everything just keeps getting more and more expensive for less and less of it. This year I planted a huge garden and I hope it

Charter doesn’t allow for this Editor: Re: Abortion Protest Crosses the Line, June 7, Times I have no children in school anymore but I don’t think I have ever been so outraged by the City of Chilliwack’s clearly fundamentalist position on the “rights” of the
protesters to distribute graphic and frightening anti abortion material to children as young as 12, many of whom have not even reached puberty. I was so angry, I phoned city hall and spoke to Starlee Renton to express my concerns. She very kindly explained the city’s legal interpretation that, as long as the protesters were not creating a health and safety issue, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms allows them to be there. She also indicated I could make a formal complaint to the bylaw office which I did. I understand that the Charter allows the freedom to practise the religion of your choice and that the
protesters have a right to protest on a public street. However, I challenge that it allows people the right to accost others, particularly minors, in an attempt to pass on their belief system in the manner these protesters did. I suggest it is a health issue—a mental health issue. Can you imagine the anxiety these images could cause a child? Since moving to Chilliwack I have become aware of the large population of religious fundamentalists here and I respect them and their beliefs. What I expect from them, however, is the same kind of respect for the beliefs of others in return. I do not believe that in any other community in the Fraser Valley would this action have been supported by the city. If you agree and would not like to see this happen again, I urge you to make a formal complaint to council. Barb Lock Chilliwack
Kids need wake up call on sex Editor: I just read the article
“Abortion protest crosses the line”. I am a mother of three children, one of whom is a 10-year-old girl. For my husband and I, this is a scary time to raise a daughter. I remember what the tail end of elementary school and all high school were like. The pressure to be sexually active and “go all the way” was bad enough then, over 15 years ago. With the music videos, TV shows and movies targeted at our kids these days, I can only imagine what the pressure is like now. For those of you who don’t think your kids in middle school and high school should be exposed to the possible consequences of an unplanned pregnancy, wake up! When my daughter was in Grade 2, sex was already being talked about by the kids on the playground, and not in the “Eww that’s gross” kind of way. I agree, images may not always be appropriate for young eyes; however, have you seen the games played these days on the game consoles? And don’t get me started on the music videos. Between Lady Gaga and Britney Spears, kids today have become desensitized to a lot. What

would have brought a blush to our faces at their age, barely causes most tweens and teens today to blink. I don’t know about you, but that scares me. I wonder if the general mentality is the same as it was when I was a kid: It’ll never happen to me. If graphic photos of abortions are what’s needed to wake these kids up to possible consequences of irresponsible sexual behaviour, then so be it. Maybe it will save some families from the heartache of an unplanned pregnancy. For those of you that are outraged by the fact that your kids were exposed to this, maybe turn this into a learning experience and a conversation opener with your children. Ask them what they thought about the demonstration, the photos, the information being presented to them. You might be surprised where that conversation leads. I know that I will be discussing this with my daughter and hoping and praying that she will make the right decisions when the time comes. J. Goodwin Chilliwack

Eighty-six-year-old Vancouver Canucks fan Marg Engstrom took a few lumps after tangling with an unruly Boston Bruin fan recently. OK, OK, that’s not entirely true: the Morris Valley resident actually tripped while wearing her lucky Canucks jersey and ended up with some stitches and nasty bruises. But she was a good sport about it and made it clear: Don’t mess with Grandma.

By the time you read this, Lord Stanley’s mug will have been awarded and the 95th presentation of the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America will go into the record books. I hope this third time in the final will be a good memory, a great story of winning in the seventh game. I hope the Canucks win and I will be cheering loudly for them to succeed. Which got me thinking: in what ways will a win/loss influence and impact my life, our lives in one year? Five years? Ten years? What difference will it make? I know we need heroes and role models and

I applaud the positive attitude and benefits of community spirit, the enthralling and thrilling emotion of camaraderie. Those all are huge and important, as is leaving a legacy. I recognize that I may be skating on thin ice, even lumped with doomsday heralds, vilified as much as the weather person forecasting rain on a long weekend when I suggest that wining the cup may not dramatically make a huge difference to our lives down the road, or in the long haul. What we will remember is the friends we watched the game with, the people who believed in us and did not give up, those moments that define

that they had good memories of growing up. Sadly, many children are not able to say that. Good, in that they knew their parents supported them and were there for them. That love is spelled t-i-m-e. Good, in that they were encouraged and equipped to meet and address the challenges and disappointments that are part of growing up, indeed are part of life. Only one team will win the cup. Good, in that they were challenged to find and be comfortable with their abilities, their calling and identity. Good in that they had great memories of helping others. what really matters in the end. Teams, and many individuals, make one-, three-, five-year plans, demarcate a clear vision that spells out desired outcomes and direction. The Canucks want to have their names inscribed on the Cup for the first time. When I first became a dad, I thought about my role and responsibilities. My wife and I set out a vision and desired outcomes for our children. We defined the task of being a parent as “creating more good memories than bad.” In other words, when our children reflect on their childhood, we wanted them to be able to say
a good memory and Sedin and the lads will have proudly hoisted the cup. More important, I want to live in such a way that I will be a good memory. I think that will make a difference. Emerson said it well: “To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics; to appreciate beauty; to give of one’s self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived—that is to have succeeded.”

Smyl’s smile is back L
ast Christmas, Harvey Smyl was preparing to kiss the Chiefs’ crest goodbye. Today, he’s one of just two Chiefs employees. When an agreement was reached to sell the Langley Chiefs last December, Smyl, who coached the Chiefs for 13 of their 16 years in Chilliwack and for the franchise’s last five seasons in Langley, knew that the club’s incoming owners had a vision that didn’t include his face. Despite the Chiefs’ relocation to Langley in 2006, Smyl had remained in Chilliwack, where his children went to school and his wife worked. But the franchise’s new owners wanted someone local, and Smyl was about to be a free agent for the first time in 20-odd years. “It was extremely difficult during that December,” he said, in a wideranging interview with the Times last week. “But once I came to that realization that it was maybe better for the township of Langley that they get someone local, after Christmas it started to seem that it’s not such a bad thing both for the team and the community.”
Long-time Chilliwack Chiefs coach has his team back in town
Smyl says at the time, he had no indication that the Western Hockey League’s Bruins would flee Chilliwack, nor that Moray Keith and Jim Bond—who had just sold the Langley Chiefs and whose company owns and operates Prospera Centre—would bring another BCHL team to town. Instead, he was focused on his team’s run to the playoffs. But somehow, everything has worked out perfectly for Smyl, if not for those who became accustomed to major junior hockey. The Langley Chiefs have become the Langley Rivermen, the Quesnel Millionaires have morphed into the Chilliwack Chiefs and Smyl now has a whole new challenge ahead of him. (While the incoming Chilliwack Chiefs are not directly descended from the team that played here earlier in the decade, the ownership is the same, as is the guiding philosophy behind the team, according to the owners and Smyl.) Last year, with his role in the team
coming to an end, Smyl had to put his annual recruiting drive on hold when it became apparent that the Langley sale would go through. It’s only been in the last few weeks that he has been able to ramp up efforts to recruit top talent. At the same time he tries to entice young up-and-comers to make Chilliwack their hockey home, Smyl has been tasked with learning about, and contacting, those players who skated with the Millionaires last year. Smyl said he has been able to make contact with all but a couple Millionaires and that the enthusiasm level is high. “Ninety per cent of the ones I’ve talked to—95 per cent—are jacked, love what they hear, are excited about it, know the history of the Chiefs and get a good feel of what it’s all about and want to come,” said Smyl emphatically, although he added that a couple have reservations. Smyl’s knowledge of the incoming

Chilliwack hockey fans have their Chiefs back
Cricketeers dim Stars Chilliwack’s Eastern District Cricket Club Stags dimmed the Surrey Stars in British Columbia Mainland Cricket Club action Saturday at Meadowbrook Park. Eastern won the toss and batted first, allowing Captain Scott Anderson to build his season aggregate to 244 runs in five innings with a score of 49. Jamaal Joseph blasted two enormous sixes on his way to 37 runs as the Stags established a first innings total of 186 all out. The Surrey team struggled immediately with Eastern’s left-arm spinner Roger Pressly—last season’s highest wicket taker. Pressly ended with figures of six wickets (out of a possible 10)

Jock scraps for just 25 runs. Surrey were eventually dismissed for just 68, keeping Eastern’s perfect winning record intact. With a loss by ACC from White Rock, Eastern District now sits alone at the top of Division 2. On Sunday the women’s cricket team played its first ever match against West Vancouver. The girls fielded first in hot conditions and bowled and fielded superbly, restricting the well established West Vancouver club to just 82 runs. The run chase started badly for the Chilliwack ‘No-Ballers’ with a confusing run out followed by three quick dismissals leaving the Chilliwack side to bat defensively and take their time in trying to chase the now formiddable 82. Solid batting from Jen Gafka, Rita Bergsma and Lisa Steinbichler nearly saw the girls to victory but the ladies fell short in their first run chase. Cougars end on high note Chilliwack’s PeeWee AA Cougars closed out their spring season by beating Ridge Meadows Black 7-4 in Abbotsford on Saturday. Shane Rutley, Colin Kellington and Tanner Ohlsen each scoring in the first inning and Tyson Loewen batting in a pair as the Cougars jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. Reece Howden started on the mound and allowed a single run in two innings of pitching. Howden tallied a run in the third, Jack McIssac added another in the fourth inning, and Bailey Whitehouse and Rutley scored in the sixth to round out the Chilliwack offence. Gabe Olivares and then Whitehouse took over pitching duties and held Ridge Meadows in check throughout the game.

At a press conference Wednesday, Harvey Smyl (right) said he plans to ice a hard-working team.
SMYL, from page 17 players comes from weeks of watching game tape and speaking to coaches and officials close to the Quesnel squad. Smyl also got the chance to see the players up close twice last year—his Chiefs split its two-game season series with the Millionaires. “They’re a close bunch with great work habits,” he said of the squad. “In terms of talent and ability, I don’t exactly know.” Nevertheless, Smyl said
the goal will be to make the playoffs this year, even though only four teams from each conference will qualify. “There’s some real hurdles to clear, but our goal is to be right in the mix,” said Smyl. “In this game, at the junior level, if you can have a good work ethic and strong chemistry, you can do OK, so we’re just trying to find out the character of the individuals,” he said. “If we can mixand-match the right pieces and add a little bit, hopefully we’ll be competitive. That’s
the goal.” For Smyl, meanwhile, the return to coaching in Chilliwack is full of excitement, in part because his family and friends will once again be there in the stands to cheer his team on. The hope is they won’t be alone. The Times asked Smyl what he thinks the first Chiefs game will be like. “You know, I don’t know,” replied Smyl. “I’m anxious for it. Excited about it. I’m hoping it’s a real positive turnout.” He paused for a second before continuing: “Personally, it’ll be nice to get behind that bench, though, after the years I spent back there.”
Full of excitement about return to coaching at home

At Home
N
ow that the temperature is close to normal, at last, people are hastening to buy annuals for summer containers. But some gardeners concentrate at least as much on containers of perennials and trees for more permanent plantings. A Burnaby gardener working with a very small, flat space has put dwarf trees in tall planters to add a vertical accent to the rear and centre of his three tiny garden beds. Because they’re dwarf trees, he knows they will stay in pots for years with very little need to root-prune and top-prune. After his yard was dug up twice so that workers could repair service pipes, he began preparing in advance for emergency plant removals. That’s why he pots-up plants in containers, then plunges them in garden beds where they look permanently rooted—but can be whisked up and away at a moment’s notice. When Oriental poppies finish blooming, a Coquitlam gardener shears their dying leaves down to the ground and puts a brick on either side. She then pops a plantfilled container on the bricks so she can enjoy some colour instead of bare earth. In early fall, when the poppies put out new, green leaves, she removes the container and the bricks. The same gardener loves the tall evergreens in her

Green Thumb backyards, but not their invasive roots which compete with delicate woodland plants growing nearby. That’s why her vulnerable plants are now in containers under the trees but not battling their roots. More rugged in-soil plants screen the pots. The movability of containers is a huge asset. A North Vancouver gardener enjoys the powerful scent of sarcococca and moves containers of it close to doorways and sitting places when it’s in bloom. She moves them away again when the blooms and fragrance are over. In Vancouver, a gardener whose deck has two very large containers, filled them with a combination of winter heather and bergenias for a flower-filled winter and spring. The contrasting foliage clothes the deck all year—and the big bonus, she says, is that the huge, glossy bergenia leaves (normally riddled with slug bites) are always immaculate. Gardeners who have mystified guests by placing potato flowers in a vase sometimes go further.

4-H members learn to judge
T
he Chilliwack 4-H Dog Club has been busy lately, planning out speeches and finding partners for demonstrations. They were also invited to the Canadian Tire Jump Start event, where they demonstrated agility, and showed how to teach dog agility to the passing public. The members also gladly helped in the recent Salvation Army Walk and Knock, gathering cans and boxes of food for the Salvation Army. Both of those events were very, very fun and interesting. B u t n ow t h a t’s d o n e, they’ve joined with other 4-H members from clubs throughout the district for judging. You might not know what that is unless you have some history with 4-H. 4-H’ers are always the ones being judged at various events and competitions, so why can’t they get a turn judging? In May, that’s what they finally had the chance to do. May was judging month, and 4-H members who wished to compete in judging finally got their chance. The top 10 from our district can go on to com-

Senior council (leaders from Chilliwack clubs) plan out where these different judging sessions will be, when, and what kinds of classes the kids get to judge. Often it will be subjects of 4-H clubs, such as cows, sheep, market hogs, market lambs, meat hares, horses, dogs, plants, healthy lunches, and sometimes silly things like patio chairs. Junior and senior members gather at a specified location and receive their judging cards. They use a new card with each class. Members are sorted into groups and the official judge for the class gives pointers on what they’re looking for. Then, 4-H members get about 10 minutes to examine the animals/things in the class and determine a
placing and reasons on their cards. You get to place them however you think they are ordered, from best to worst, depending on what you’re looking for in that class. Then you hand it in to the judge. Senior members must give oral reasons in order to earn their judging certificates. Juniors earn badges. The judge will then give the official placing and you see how many you got right. You are marked on how you placed the class and also the reasons for why you placed them the way you did. The members’ best four classes of the three sessions will be taken into consideration for judging awards at the end of the year at the District Awards Night.
4-H Brings you puppy tips
While potty training, take puppies out every 30 minutes and after every nap. Praise them when they pee outside, and keep them in a kennel while you’re away for a few hours. Don’t get mad at a puppy for making a mistake when you were not there to see it. Dogs don’t understand why you’re mad because they have short memories.

Top doc Leo for local filmmaker Series lets aboriginal ‘city slickers’ taste traditional life
BY CORNELIA NAYLOR cnaylor@chilliwacktimes.com
A
Chilliwack-area filmmaker nabbed top honours at the biggest night for B.C.’s movie and television industry Saturday. Back in the Day: On the Mighty Fraser, a six-part television series written and conceived by local screenwriter Andrew Genaille, won the Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of B.C.’s coveted Leo Award for best documentary series. A first-time nominee, Genaille a d m i t s h e w a s a l i t t l e ove rwhelmed. “I had a huge adrenaline rush, so I don’t actually remember much,” he said of his moment in the spotlight at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, where the awards were handed out. Back in the Day is a documentary series that follows the lives of six aboriginal city slickers who spend six days out in the natural world to experience the ways of their grandfathers and grandmothers and to see how much nature is really left in their blood. Genaille, who grew up on a small reserve between Hope and Chilliwack, came up with the idea during a year spent living in Vancouver with an aboriginal friend who was city born and raised. “It was a year of her asking me millions of different questions on what it’s like to live on a reserve out

That experience gave him an idea. “What if we took First Nations people that never had the opportunity to be out in the bush or near a reserve or to learn some of the things that we take for granted?” Not that Genaille, whose mom is from the Sto:lo nation and whose dad is Objibway and Cree, claims to be any kind of paragon of aboriginal bush savvy. He doesn’t know the first thing about hunting, he said, and he doesn’t eat salmon—a running joke among his friends, made fun-
nier since that was the dish served at the gala Leo dinner. Once the idea for the series was in place, Genaille et al. rounded up six suitable urban aboriginals. “We looked for people that, first off, were interesting, but also had that feeling of disconnect, that wanted to try this out.” The lucky half-dozen were then taken into the bush for six days and exposed to traditional skills, like fishing, hunting with bows and arrows, carving, storytelling and canoeing—all without the aid of Tim Hortons or Starbucks. For historical authenticity, Genaille leaned on his brother Rob-
ert, a high school history teacher, whom Genaille calls a “walking encyclopedia.” T h e s e r i e s a i re d o n A P T N (Aboriginal Peoples Television Network) last year and is set to re-air starting July 2 at 3 p.m. Winning the Leo should ease the way for the series’ second season, according to Genaille, who is off to Edmonton next week to interview the next round of participants. “It’s great for selling it afterwards, when we’re trying to look for credibility,” he said. The second season will be set in the bush two hours north of Edmonton on a large lake, and the
ultimate vision for the series is to shoot it all the way across Canada, season by season. But Back in the Day wasn’t the only one of Genaille’s projects to catch the attention of the Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of B.C. this year. He was also nominated for Best Screenwriting in a Feature Length Drama for Two Indians Talking, a comedic drama about two First Nations cousins who have conflicting opinions about a roadblock they are preparing to set up. For Genaille, who got into filmmaking in high school and later studied at the Victoria Motion Picture School, maintaining a sense of humour while taking on dark subjects is a bit of a trademark. “Humour is that hope,” he said. ◗ For more information about Back in the Day, visit www.backintheday.ca.

P
atrons of the Chilliwack Cultural Centre have attended live entertainment for almost a year now, and on every occasion, a volunteer has welcomed them, served beverages, assisted with their coats and ushered them to their seats. With the 2010/11 season completed for the Chilliwack Arts & Cultural Centre Society, there are many feats to celebrate, including a successful season and the generous volunteer hours put in by community members. The society grew especially proud of the centre’s volunteers when the overall hours reached 4,400, and nine volunteers recorded over 100 hours each, with Ruth Niemann recording well over 200 hours. The nine volunteers the society is honouring include Ruth Niemann, Lesley Slot, Anna McElroy, Annabelle Cook, Bonnie Mason, Sharon Pauls, Lorraine Britton, Deanna Gow, and Ann Aicholz. Though volunteers at the centre tend to take in numer-
ous shows, from Broadway productions to local Players Guild performances, the men and women also ensure many important tasks are accomplished before, during and after a show. When asked to pick a personal favourite performance, Cook replied, “Every show has been a highlight—with many really expanding my horizon.” “Volunteering isn’t a free ticket, though many enjoy that added benefit,” said booking manager Theresia Reid. “I am extremely proud of our volunteers and the extra mile many of them go, particularly with the patrons who are physically and mentally challenged.” Though the centre’s volunteer team has reached well past 150, the society welcomes new participants. Orientation sessions are held bi-monthly. For those interested, contact Reid by phone at 604392-8000, email theresia@ chilliwackculturalcentre.ca, or in person at the centre box office.

The Franchise is a group of dancers from Project Dance aged 10 to 13.
Locals hip hop to Vegas
or the second year in a row, Chilliwack will be represented at the world hip-hop championships in Las Vegas. That right was earned by The Franchise, a group of eight dancers from Project Dance aged 10 to 13, when an outstanding qualifying round propelled them to Las Vegas July 26 to 31, to compete amongst the world’s best in hip-hop. The win was a brilliant capper to a great competition season for Project Dance, beginning with the Chilliwack Music & Dance Festival, followed by Dance Power in Chilliwack, Rising Star in Mission, the Surrey Dance Festival, Synergy in Surrey and 5678 Showtime in Surrey. Among the multitude of placements, highscore trophies and bursaries, 10-year-old Halle Konrad emerged as the provincial representative. She competed for the provincial junior title in Kamloops the week of June 6. “There are too many accomplishments
to do everyone justice” said Project Dance owner/director, Amanda Quinton. “In only our third year of operation, we are a force to be reckoned with. Commitment to their craft was also evidenced in the recent Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) ballet exams, where 75 percent of those tested earned “distinction.” “I’m constantly amazed by these young dancers,” said Quinton. “Whether they are on the world stage in front of thousands of spectators, or dancing on a small school stage for a group of elementary school students, they consistently perform with professionalism and a great sense of teamwork.” Dancers in The Franchise will be hard at work fundraising in the coming weeks to prepare for the Las Vegas competition. Any community support would be appreciated. ◗ For more information, contact Amanda Quinton at 604-846-3262 or projectdance@ shaw.ca.

THE HIGH COST OF TRAFFIC JAMS
Road Rules has written about the ‘social costs’ of traffic congestion: the collective waste of enormous amounts of time, the negative health impacts, the strain on family relations, the ‘cocooning’ trend, not as a seismic shift in cultural taste but as a reaction to traffic congestion. A recent Slate.com article— “Driving ourselves Cedric Hughes mad”— summarizes some of the latest research wrapping numbers around these social costs: • From Umea University in Sweden the finding that couples in which one partner commutes for longer than 45 minutes are 40% likelier to divorce. • The Gallup Healthways Well-Being Index finding that 40% of employees who spend more than 90 minutes getting home from work “experienced worry for much of the previous day” …and that …workers with very long commutes feel less rested and experience less enjoyment…. • The same survey finding that one in three workers with a 90-minute daily commute has recurrent neck or back problems. • The finding by Robert Putnam, the famed Harvard political scientist, that long commuting times are one of the most robust predictors of social isolation — every 10 minutes spent commuting resulting in 10% fewer “social connections.” • From Thomas James Christian of Brown University the finding that each minute you commute is associated with “a 0.0257 minute exercise time reduction, a 0.0387 minute food preparation time reduction, and a 0.2205 minute sleep time reduction.” • From UCLA and Cal State-Long Beach the finding that vehicle-miles travelled had a stronger correlation with obesity

Personal Injury Law, ICBC Claims
Home owner’s grants may also be claimed online at www.chilliwack.com If you bought property in 2011 but didn’t receive a tax notice, please confirm that the 2011 taxes are paid. If you did not receive a notice, please contact our office immediately. Provincial legislation requires payment of taxes by July 4, 2011 with or without a notice.
than any other lifestyle factor. In summary, said Slate. com, “We hate commuting. It correlates with an increased risk of obesity, divorce, neck pain, stress, worry and sleeplessness. It makes us eat worse and exercise less. Yet, we keep on doing it.” In January 2011, an article by Andrew Coyne “Stuck in Traffic” in Maclean’s Barrister & Solicitor magazine summarized “some of the most popular non-answers” to traffic congestion as follows: less urban sprawl, telecommuting, staggered work hours, car-pooling, ‘mass defections to public transit, or even bicycles’, better synchronized traffic lights, more roundabouts, more roads or conversely fewer roads. What these ‘non-answers’ do offer, however, is a pointer to what Mr. Coyne calls the ‘real answer’ because they at least suggest that traffic levels are not a given and that people can (and do) make changes in numerous ways. The ‘real answer’ is a matter of “incentivizing” change by means of the same mechanism we use to “allocate resources everywhere else in the economy” — pricing or tolls — but in the latest iteration: electronic road pricing based on satellite tracking technology. Tolls, Mr. Coyne writes, “ would no longer be discreet events, but more like your phone bill: the price you paid to use the road system, much as you pay to use the telephone network. The tolls would vary dynamically ... Satellites…could … update drivers on the prices of different roads as they came up; [and] route-planning software could … predict the costs of alternative routes.” Traffic jams and “death on the highway” are unacceptable norms and Road Rules looks forward to technological developments providing answers. Obituaries
Leah was the oldest child born to the late William and Mary Bischke of Irvine, Alberta on August 1, 1924. She grew up on her family farm, along with her three siblings, Rueben, Alice and Edna. At the tender age of 18, Leah met Herb, a young pastor who would often come to the farm for ‘Sunday afternoon visits’. They were married on October 7, 1943, their son to follow August 5, 1944. They served as Pastor in many churches throughout BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan in the following years. Leah served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, taught Bible Study and was Evangelical Women’s president for several years. She loved books and had always dreamed of becoming a elementary school teacher. Leah was an amazing cook and home maker. The family had many wonderful meals of her strudels, chicken, cinnamon buns, maple walnut chiffon cake and her plum kuchen. She was a skilled seamstress and her grand-daughters wardrobe benefitted from this talent. She is predeceased by her husband Herbert T. Ginther on May 16, 1986 and her parents William and Mary Bischke. She leaves to mourn her son Larry (Renate) Ginther, 2 grand daughters Jennifer (Gary) Lau and Stephanie (Chris) MacDonald and 4 great grand-sons Braedon Will, Jake MacDonald and Nathan and Jackson Lau. She also leaves to mourn her siblings, Rueben (Agnes) Bischke, Alice (Ephraim) Haas, Edna (Don) Kanewischer and many nieces and nephews. Our family would like to express a heartfelt Thank you to the staff at Cascade Manor for their loving care and attention of Leah over the past 5 years. In addition, Thank you to Dr. Markey who tended to Leah health and comfort for many years! You have been a blessing to Leah and our family! In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation can be made to either the Evangelical Missionary Church Memorial Fund and/or the Gideons International in Canada. A Memorial Service will be held at Evangelical Missionary Church on 9310 Williams Street on Friday, June 17th, 2011 at 2:00 pm, followed by a tea.

Mom lived life and always had a purpose. Her favourite saying was “God has given me a job to do on earth and I have lots of unfinished business”. Mom treasured her family and always gave of herself tirelessly in her cause to help us be strong, independent, loving and compassionate to others. We hope we will honour your memory with what you have taught us. Mom’s favourite pastime was to travel. Before she lost her beloved husband Ewald, they both travelled all over the world experiencing such places as Australia, Egypt, Russia, Peru, and many other exotic locations. In later years we her children were fortunate enough to travel to some of these wonderful places and have the most incredible memories. Our family is deeply grateful and in awe of the wonderful care provided to Mom from Dr. Heather Leyen and her staff throughout this journey. We were also so amazed and fortunate to spend out last weeks with Mom at the Cascade Hospice where we were able to concentrate on just loving our Dear Mother while warm compassionate staff took care of all her needs. MOM Your glowing smile will always be in our hearts forever. A Viewing will take place from 9:30am – 11:30am on Monday June 20th at Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, BC, followed by entombment in South Mausoleum, Ocean View Burial Park. Cancer June 21-July 22: A month of quietude and weariness ends Tuesday, as four weeks of high energy, charisma and effectiveness begin. Start important projects. Ask favours, call in markers. Until June 28 (next week) you might face opposition, or be attracted to a deeply alluring person. As usual, love is better than war. In the present week, especially Sunday to Tuesday, watch what you say to others: avoid secrets, gossip, etc. You are just beginning a splendid year-long popularity surge, especially at work. After Tuesday’s confusion/worry, grand inspiration flows Wednesday – follow hunches! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Tuesday begins a month of retreat, quietude and rest. Your career luck will stay high, even rise. You can work in the background to advance your position: you’ll be especially good with government, institutional or head-office contacts. (Though these present some difficulties this Sunday and Tuesday.) Your hopes and optimism will rise also, and despite your need for solitude, you could receive an unusual amount of calls and invitations. So grab your rest when you can. This week isn’t easy, so remain realistic and diplomatic, particularly in legal, travel, sex and financial zones. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Tackle your work Sunday/ Monday. Tuesday begins a month of celebration, flirtation, entertainment, optimism and popularity! You might meet someone very compatible in a group, someone who lifts you to humorous, good-natured heights. The year going tforward favours love – and far travel, learning, culture. Various problems and barriers confront you Sunday to Tuesday – don’t invest nor make any important commitment. This advice applies Thursday also. Inspiration returns Wednesday – and relationships turn from delusion to sweet knowing. Friday’s sexy, Saturday night’s loving, wise.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: The weeks ahead emphasize home, children, real estate, security, retirement, gardening, soul, nutrition and Mother Nature. It’s a splendid time for a camping vacation. (Better not to leave before June 28. You face many “home concerns” until then.) You will be ending some associations and projects now, perhaps to give new ones room to grow. Although this is usually a sluggish, restful period, you’re kept busy with a lot of communications, paperwork, errands – or wanderlust – now through July. Since your curiosity is up, investigate new income sources/ideas – they’re lucky! Taurus April 20-May 20: Be ambitious Sunday/ Monday – despite a subtle disagreement or heavyhanded legal or educational “pronouncement,” you’re on the path to success (for at least two years, financially, so be optimistic, make plans and go forth these months ahead!). Now to Aug. 2, you might spend too much, or be pushed to spend by government fees. Saving is your friend! Tuesday begins a month of paperwork, short trips, errands, casual acquaintances – you’ll be busy! Love is gentle, easy Monday to Wednesday, but you might doubt it: relax. Retreat, rest Thursday/Friday. Your energy surges Saturday p.m. Gemini May 21-June 20: This week isn’t easy for anyone. You could meet barriers or the need to compromise in finances or sex, especially Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday/Friday. On the plus side, your courage and determination grow now to early August, and so does your optimism. Group affairs grow; you’ll feel befriended. If someone criticized you to a group (secretly) these past few weeks, they prove ineffectual now. The month ahead emphasizes earnings, spending, possessions, sensuality and memory. Sunday’s gentle, mid-week’s ambitious (Wednesday best) and late week brings optimism and popularity!

June 19 - 25, 2011
Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: You feel romantic Sunday/ Monday, but events don’t help. Be cautious. Monday begins six weeks of partnership opportunities, possibly of legal hassles. Seek convergence, not dispute. If a partner begins talking about an international move, be wary. Recently, after a five-month respite, the sober side of your life returned to prominence – you can once again re-make your domestic, security, property and child-oriented situation – much more fortunately! (To next June.) Tuesday starts a month of ambition, and dealings with authorities. Reject relationships Thursday, embrace them Friday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Mysteries fade; enlightenment comes Tuesday onward (for a month). Expect widened understanding, gentle love, international contacts, religious, educational and cultural involvements. Your life, for the next three years, will be filled with opportunities (especially financial ones) and, if you’re single, with cheerful, attractive love prospects. Every odd-numbered month, and the 10 days before it, will promote these (relationships and opportunities). E.g., July (seventh month) qualifies, with late June. Minor communication snafus this week. Romance calls Wednesday and Saturday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The (semi?) exciting events of the past few weeks yield now to a deeper, slower thrill, as intimacy, commitment, financial investment or clearing debts, grow more important for the month ahead. (It starts Tuesday morning – but make no commitments before June 28.) Secrets, research, intuition, dreams and hunches accompany this commitment trend. You might fall for someone new, or raise an ongoing romance to a more mature level, now through early August. If you’re the feisty type this phase can bring arguments and fights. Your choice! Domestic intuition strong Wednesday.
Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Finish a project or chore Sunday/Monday. By late Monday onward (to August) a new task enters; and by Tuesday, a month of new horizons, fresh air and relationship excitement begins. This happens every early summer, but it’s more significant this year, as your romantic luck is beginning to climb strongly! If you’re married, the month ahead brings joys through children, vacation, sports and “winning.” (Singles get this, too.) Watch what you say – and legal parameters – midweek. Rest, rejuvenate, strengthen foundations Thursday/ Friday. Romance Saturday p.m. – join a group. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: It hasn’t been a strong summer for you, Aquarius, but the months ahead (12 of them) bring a strong, beneficial rebuilding period, which might be marked by the purchase of a new home, better rental, the entry of a new baby, lifefreeing therapy, or other good foundational moves. One of the first requirements of this new foundation will be work, which confronts you Tuesday onward for a few weeks. Dive into this eagerly (but cautiously before June 28, as the path’s a bit rocky). You could be fooled about money Tuesday, and make a bad bet. But money inspiration’s great Wednesday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Rest deeply Sunday/ Monday – Monday p.m. onward, your energy and charisma rise, and Tuesday morning begins a month of romance, creativity, pleasure and adventure! But Monday also starts six weeks of friction on the home front. Be gentle with parents and kids. Romantic urges outside the home might cause dissention within it. These same six weeks, you might have an opportunity to buy or sell real estate – OK, but strictly avoid moving into a new residence before Aug. 3. (It would “set up” long-term friction.) You might change sources of income. Joy Wednesday: thank God. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
