wo people were injured in a shooting late last Wednesday night near Mary Street. Police have released few details, but 86-year-old Beryl Arnold said a man clutching his bloodied head banged on her Mary Street door just before midnight. A vehicle with shattered windows was also driven to Chilliwack General Hospital, although it is not clear if the bloodied man came from that vehicle.
Few details released about incident near Mary Street that left blood stains on a resident’s home
When the man turned up at Arnold’s doorway, he was covered with blood. Arnold’s son, who is staying on the property with his mother, said he heard five gunshots before the man turned up. Shortly after the son, who didn’t want to be named, called 911, a pickup came speeding down Mary
Street and the man took off and ran into Arnold’s backyard. A trail of blood shows his path around Arnold’s house and into a neighbour’s backyard. There is blood on Arnold’s door frame, on the front of her house, on the corner of a garage and on the backyard fence. Mounties, meanwhile, instructed

BY TYLER OLSEN tolsen@chilliwacktimes.com reparation paid off for two Langley hikers who became disoriented on Ford Mountain Sunday evening but were found in fine condition by Chilliwack Search and Rescue teams the next morning. A 25-year-old man and a 21year-old woman aimed to climb Williams Peak Sunday and return home at 8 p.m. When they hadn’t turned up by 11 p.m., three search teams—along with the woman’s father and friend, who were also hikers—were sent into the bush to try and locate the missing couple. Crews located the couple just after 9 a.m. Monday morning at the base of the mountain and near the road. The couple, both of whom were experienced hikers, had been prepared for an overnight stay, so much so that they turned down an

Her son estimates the area was swarmed by some 50 Mounties. Arnold, speaking Thursday morning, said she hadn’t slept since the man banged on her door. Even after clearing the area of any potential suspects, she said police remained active until around 4 a.m. “I went to bed and laid down and said, ‘Forget it,’” she said. “I just sat at my door and watched the goings on. “I asked them why they were taking so many pictures; they said, ‘Because there’s so much blood on your house.’”

CSS Grade 11 international student Stephane Assante.
International students find our city a great place to learn
as a teenager. “The first three months were the worst months of my life,” said Schuetz, who’s been here since September. Still, every year more than a 100 international students from places like South Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Germany, Slovakia, Switzerland, Brazil and Ghana pay $12,850 a year in fees and tuition as well as $800 per month in homestay fees to come to Chilliwack schools. And that doesn’t include airfare. Why do they do it? According to a report recently presented to the board of education, Chilliwack holds a number of attractions. B.C. as a whole is popular among international students because of Canada’s international reputation for quality education as well as respect worldwide for the Dogwood diploma. But Chilliwack has another draw that districts in metro Vancouver don’t share: a student population comprised of over 95 per cent native English speakers. Unlike districts like Richmond and Vancouver, where more than half of the student populations speak a language other than English at home, Chilliwack offers thorough English immersion.
“In Vancouver there’s Chinese everywhere and Koreans too,” said Kim, who started at Vedder middle in Grade 7. But Li, whose parents picked Chilliwack for her older brother a few years ago because of the predominance of English speakers here, says even 95 per cent is no guarantee an international student will learn English. “Actually, I think no matter where you are, if you want to hang out with your Chinese friends, it would be the same,” she said. “It depends on people. People who want to try more things, experience more things, they will go for it.” International students brought in just over $1 million in revenue for the district this year, and although that’s a fair bit of gravy money, Glenn Tiechko, the program’s administrator, said Chilliwack is far from treating international

Stephane Asante, an international student at Chilliwack secondary from Kumasi, Ghana, misses her mom’s Jollof rice, while Joshua Kim, a Sardis secondary student from Seoul, Korea, misses his native country’s Internet speed—lightning fast compared to what he gets in Chilliwack. Anna Schuetz, a CSS student from Bremen, Germany, meanwhile, misses being able to walk into a pub or club, something that’s been legal for her in Germany since she turned 16, while Eva Li, a Sardis student from Hong Kong, misses being able to get around without a car. All of them, of course, miss friends and family. It’s tough coming to a new country

placed more signs back on city hall’s lawn—but also to pay for the permit and ask for their signs back. The city’s bylaw requires those wanting to put up signs to pay a $500 deposit that is refunded when signs are removed after the election. “This avoids our having to pay city staff members to remove them at the expense of the taxpayers,” Gaetz told Thompson via email on Thursday. “This is consistent with the principles of democracy because those people who do not agree with your views should not have to pay to clean up your election signs.” Thompson added that the issue is that in other communities, Surrey, for example, such a permit is not required and that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms should supersede the bylaw. City workers in Surrey did take down Fight HST signs but on Friday returned them, according to campaigners in that city. Surrey has a sign
bylaw that states political signs must be removed within 14 days after an election, but there is no permit required. At first, Surrey city hall said the HST referendum signs didn’t count as election signs but on Friday that stance had changed, and signs put up in that community will now be left alone. Fight HST campaign leader Bill Vander Zalm will be in Chilliwack at the Coast Hotel on June 16 at 8 p.m. On Thursday, the campaign issued a “friendly challenge” to Chilliwack MLA John Les to debate the HST with Vander Zalm. In an email response, Les said he could not make it as he was travelling on previously-scheduled government business. Both sides are ramping up the rhetoric as B.C. residents should begin to received mail-in referendum ballots this week.

SAR meal not needed LOST, from page 1 SAR meal. “Thankfully both of the hikers were fine when they were found,” said RCMP Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth. “They were offered food, but declined graciously and said they had already eaten a good breakfast.” The hikers told police that they had become disoriented Sunday evening and decided to spend the night and get a fresh start in the morning. After waking up between 3 and 4 a.m., they successfully made their way towards the road. Hollingsworth said the happy ending underscores the importance of preparation when venturing into the back-country. “This is the second incident within the past 10 days where SAR has been called to assist in locating disoriented hikers,” said Hollingsworth. “Luckily both incidents had a positive outcome because the hikers were prepared.”

Young BC Liberal keener than most adults BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com
I
t’s often said that the lack of interest in politics among young people is a serious problem. Well 14-year-old William Van Hoepen is making up for his peers with an enthusiasm for politics and, specifically, the BC Liberals that many teens reserve for video games. “I just really like politics,” the Mt. Cheam Christian School Grade 8 student says, adding that he’s got his future all figured out. “I want to be in city council first, to get people to know my name, and then get in to be an MLA and then Premier,” Van Hoepen said. “Then I want to be MP and then the Prime Minister.” Van Hoepen says his interest in politics began in Grade 5. At that time he discovered, as did his classmates and his parents, that he really likes to talk. “I’m blah, blah, blah and I never stop talking,” he says. “People always argue with me.” When he was 12 he begged his father to take him to the Legislature to watch question period, an experience that got him hooked further on politics and the BC Liberals. In the interest of full disclosure, Van Hoepen points out that his uncle is Chilliwack MLA John Les. But he says

mates and his friends to be more interested in politics.” He certainly tries, but Van Hoepen says neither his siblings nor any of his classmates share his passion, something he finds disappointing. “We need tons more kids in politics,” he says. “I don’t care what party it is, just get the kids in because they are the future.” Since joining the BC Liberals he attended the May convention held in Penticton. He went to take part in youth sessions but he said those who showed up were all older. “We do have a category of young Liberals and they are fairly active in our party,” Les said. “It’s unusual for someone as young as 14 to come to the convention and to be really, keenly interested.” His attendance and enthusiasm was so unusual that Premier Christy Clark picked up on it and mentioned it in one of her speeches. “I told the Premier, ‘You made William’s day,’” Les said. Van Hoepen has an idea how to get kids involved and that’s to have both Les and Penner hold town hall meetings every week. “Maybe that kind of thing we don’t do often enough,” Les said. “We get so caught up in the other things that we lose sight of the need to communicate.”
That’s Great! Now we have a good reason to cross the road.

Thinking about labour issues
I
’m told Canada Post is on strike. I hadn’t really noticed it but come to think of it, I haven’t been getting as many Kentucky Fried Chicken coupons in the mail. I honestly don’t recall the last letter I wrote or received, all my bills are sent and paid electronically and anything important that’s delivered to the door (usually BBQ accessories) comes by way of courier. I really don’t know there’s another so called “essential service” that could disappear and would have less impact. There’s a mailbox on my neighbour’s boulevard. Well, sometimes it’s on his boulevard. Usually it’s on its side and lying on the sidewalk. At least once a week, kids on the way to or from school knock it over and Canada Post sends someone to put it back up. I’ve been told the person gets paid quite nicely for doing so. I’ve often wondered why they don’t just put the mailbox across the street. There’s no sidewalk there so no one ever walks on that side of the street. But I guess someone wouldn’t have as much essential service to perform if it didn’t keep getting knocked over. It’s lying on its side this very moment. There’s another labour issue going on. B.C. has some problems with its sheriffs. Sheriffs in this province aren’t like the sheriffs on TV. They don’t keep law and order in frontier mining towns.
JOHN MARTIN
Crime Matters No, they do more mundane tasks. One of these is to provide security in courtrooms during trials. But there’s been a shortage of sheriffs lately. So criminal cases, including some very serious ones, are being postponed or cancelled altogether. Dean Purdy, speaking on behalf of the B.C. Government and Service Employee’s Union claimed, “They’ve been scrambling in Abbotsford and Chilliwack to provide security for a judge so he or she can run their courtroom.” I thought it would have made sense to hire some more sheriffs so justice could proceed in a safe and efficient manner. Instead, we just laid off another 34. But the province has found a partial solution. The sheriffs who still have their jobs are working overtime to try to cover the shortage. Somehow, that just doesn’t quite make sense. Workers in the public sector are worried about the federal government’s cost-cutting plans. Many people have little sympathy for government employees. Studies typically show that someone in the private sector performing the same
job with the same experience earns 23 per cent less than his government employed counterpart when benefits are factored in. How did that happen? I recently read a story about a public sector employee, much like myself, who would stop for a takeout coffee every morning on his way to work. After several months he would strike up a friendly conversation with the cashier, a woman almost old enough to be his mother. It turns out she retired a few years ago after running a restaurant her entire adult life. But her retirement income wasn’t enough to live on so she went back to work. It dawned on the gentlemen who stopped for coffee each morning that part of the taxes she pays will help fund his guaranteed, government pension. He tips her well. Personally, I’ve been very fortunate on the labour front in my lifetime. I’ve never been on strike and I’ve never been laid off. Sure I was fired a couple times back in the day but I kind of deserved to be. Making on air jokes about the radio station manager’s pot plants probably wasn’t my brightest career move. ◗ John Martin is a criminologist at the University of the FraserValley. John.Martin@ufv.ca. young. But the stories in recent weeks have all been about the young, in a Parliament in which the average age of MPs dropped significantly as a result of last month’s election. The senior-dominated Senate was disrupted briefly by Brigette DePape, a 21year-old student and page who raised a “Stop Harper” sign in an act of protest that got her fired. Less headline-grabbing but no less important was the election of the new Speaker, Conservative MP Andrew Scheer, at 32 the youngest in Canadian history. Then there’s Pierre-Luc Dusseault, the 19-year-old NDP MP who had to give up his summer job at a golf club when he unexpectedly became the youngest person ever elected to Canada’s Parliament. Those three might not have much in common aside from their age. They are, respectively, a protestor, a member of the ruling government, and a member of the opposition. But they are all well under 40 years of age. On some issues, Canadians can be divided by their party affiliation, by their religion, by the region where they grew up, or by their first language. But there are other issues that split us by age. Younger people are likely to have different opinions on the environment and on social issues than their elders. They also see and interact with the world in different ways. Young people, especially those still in their teens and 20s, grew up in an era defined by prosperity and boom times and now find themselves living in a much more uncertain world. They have been defined by wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, not Vietnam or Korea—or the Second World War. How this new cohort will shape Canada will be seen, perhaps for the first time, in this new Parliament.

Yale Treaty allows access
Pick up some light reading Editor: The initiative by Chilliwack MLA John Les to move British Columbia towards electing our senators is a step in the right direction. It might be nice if we could adjust the number of senators each

province is allotted but this is almost impossible under the terms of our constitution. Other changes are also needed such as limiting a senator’s term of office and this may be possible if an agreement can be reached between Ottawa and the provinces. One point that needs to be made is that while there is a lot of dissatisfaction over the makeup and role of the senate, very few people have read our constitution and have even the slightest understanding of the process for amending it. Our constitution contains a number of conditions that make amending it very difficult and it is not something the federal government or the provinces can do unilaterally. I would strongly suggest that all Canadians obtain a copy of our constitution and read it. Jack Carradice Chilliwack
Pre-teens need abortion lesson Editor: Gord Byers says, “that middle schoolers are too young to have to confront such graphic images and such a controversial issue” Really? According to Statistics Canada abortion rates, you’ll find that since 1974, teens 14 and younger have had 16,403 abortions. I think it’s clear that this age
group needs more sexual education, hindrance and a clear understanding of their actions and the consequences thereof. The sad truth is the average age to lose one’s virginity is 15. You’re right, Gord Byers, “middle schoolers are too young.” Children must be made aware of the consequence of their actions. Of course they will have sex if they think there is no consequence. They’re at the most critical age of learning, and this is precisely the time to hit them with the shocking results of their poor decisions. Unwanted pregnancies happen when children have sex and now that it’s legal to kill those babies, people view abortion as a method of birth control. Being too young to realize the responsibility of sex and the dangers of abortion, they close their minds to what they are doing not only to the baby but to themselves. I congratulate those who took the liberty to inform and share with those that don’t fully know the result of their actions. Yes, the images are graphic and disturbing. Abortion is a horrific process. These were simply bringing to our attention the cold, hard truth and the cold, hard truth is graphic and disturbing. Katey Montague Chilliwack
The Long Life Elixir
o cure some so-called “incurable” diseases, a formula containing 11 medicinal herbs (later named Swedish Bitters), was formulated by a Swedish physician by the name of Dr. Claus Samst. Dr. Samst lived to the ripe old age of 104 years old but died (in good health) from a riding accident. Swedish Bitters was originally developed as a digestive aid however, the health benefits that were realized far outnumber its original purpose. Over 200 years ago, Dr. Samst blended this mixture of healing herbs named ‘Swedish Bitters’ and then compiled a clinical reference describing 46 different conditions for which Swedish Bitters brought relief. After WWII, this elixir was further refined by Austrian herbalist Maria Treben. It is still one of the most sought-after remedies in Europe... truly worthy of its nickname, “The Long Life Elixir.” In many European countries and most of Scandinavia, Swedish Bitters is a staple for millions of families. It
seems every home has a bottle in the cupboard. Few products have ever achieved the status of Swedish Bitters as being “good for what ails you.”
While many people speak of health benefits such as renewed energy and vitality, others claim Swedish Bitters soothes and relaxes them. This amazing diversity of benefits is due to Swedish Bitters activity on the body’s basic metabolic responses. It seems to calm overactive systems and it stimulates sluggish ones. In addition, it has long been revered as a gentle laxative as well as a tonic that restores the natural acid balance in the stomach. It’s also an excellent liver detoxifier and it is ideal for your overall digestive health. Maria’s Swedish Bitters is the perfect tonic to improve your health. Editor: I would like to clarify a few points regarding your June 7 article (Yale treaty far from done deal): The Yale First Nation Final Agreement doesn’t give Yale the authority to approve who fishes in the Fraser canyon. The issue is access to certain lands along the river. Under the Final Agreement, Yale will allow reasonable public access to some of its treaty lands, for people to hunt and fish, including the Sto:lo. During the 16 years of Yale treaty negotiations, neighbouring communities, including the Sto:lo First Nations, were invited to participate in consultations and public meetings. All parties continue to work to resolve remaining overlap issues before the agreement is ratified and brought into effect. I recently met with Clarence Pennier and Joe Hall to ensure they are clear on these issues and to assure all Sto:lo members that this government is committed to protecting their rights and negotiating a resolution to this issue. I have made this commitment in writing to them. The Final Agreement resolves many issues, not least of which is the resolution of historic wrongs between an individual First Nation and the provincial and federal governments. This treaty is not an end, but a beginning. Mary Polak Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation

Three local ‘karateka’ off to Thailand tourney
BY TYLER OLSEN tolsen@chilliwacktimes.com
T
hree local karate students and their sensei have been chosen to compete in a major event to be held this summer inThailand. Zach Charlton, Amanda Kereliuk, Jacob Maud and Sensei Don Sharp have been selected to attend the Japanese Karate Association’s World Cup event in August in Pattaya, Thailand. Sharp is the students’ sensei at Valley Shidokan Karate. He and Maud, Kereliuk and Charlton were selected to compete by a committee evaluating the athletes on their potential for success at the event. For 13-year-old Zach Charlton, the tournament will mark the first time he has competed outside of Canada. “I am very excited and nervous,” said the well-spoken Charlton. “I’m expecting there will be quite a bit of competition and training.” Charlton earned his black belt a year ago, at age 12, and has consistently placed well in
Ken Goudswaard/TIMES
Zach Charlton (left to right) Amanda Kereliuk and Jacob Maud show off their karate moves. tournaments around the province. He currently trains five days a week and says he’ll be working on making his moves faster and smoother in preparation for theWorld Cup. Charlton hasn’t travelled abroad before and is looking forward to experiencing a
new culture. He’ll have some help from his mother, Tamiko, who will accompany her son and who knows a little Thai, having lived there before. Fifteen-year-old Kereliuk— who earned her black belt just two weeks ago—is similarly excited and said it was an
honour to be selected. “It’s almost like saying, ‘You’ve been doing a really great job and now this is how much we believe in you’ so it feels pretty awesome.” Like Charlton, Kereliuk has a lot of training ahead of her to prepare for competi-
tion against some of the best young karateka in the world. “I do expect a lot of intensity from the other athletes, especially the Asian countries,” she said. “I’ve fought a couple people who used to live and train in Hong Kong and China, and they’re very good. They seem very relaxed but once they get on the mat, they’re fierce competitors.” Asked if she’ll have to elevate her own intensity, Kereliuk gives a nuanced answer: “Yes,” she said, but“You can’t mimic what they have, you actually have to have it, but if you can show some ferocity and intensity in what you’re doing and that you want it and that you’re good enough, that’s fine too, because they don’t expect everyone to have that intensity all the time because the people who can do that, they live and breathe and do karate every day for three to six hours.” Maud, 13, says the upcoming tournament seems so fantastic, that it’s “almost unimaginable” at this point. “It’s going to be a gigantic
experience that I might never be able to see again,” the second-degree brown belt told theTimes. Maud says he will also be training more in a couple weeks to try and match the competition, following the example of Sharp. “He’s quite an inspiration to me,” said Maud of his sensei. “I look at him and think ‘Wow, he’s amazing’ and I’d like to be a whole lot like him, even out of the dojo as well.” Maud said he and the other Chilliwack students will be cheering on their sensei when Sharp, a champion in the 1996 event, hits the mat. “It’ll be amazing. We’ll get to watch him compete; we’ll all be supporting each other,” said Maud.

News GLOBAL, from page 3 students like the “cash cow” they’ve become in some Metro Vancouver districts struggling to balance their budgets. Chilliwack’s program is relatively small, with a capacity of about 150, and the district’s solid financial footing has allowed it to focus on quality instead of quantity, according to Tiechko. Over the last 16 years, he said, Chilliwack has built up a reputation as a very welcoming and accommodating place to study. For most international students, that reputation starts with home-
School easier, home life different stay families. “I actually experienced what a family is like,” said Li, whose parents at home are very busy and rarely talk over a shared meal. Schools, naturally, also play a big part. Most international students find school here easier than in their home countries where competition for jobs and university seats is fierce. Schuetz, for example, said the material taught in French 12 here, she learned in Grade 9 in Germany.
But the focus on achievement back home doesn’t necessarily mean a better education, according to Li. “I don’t like the idea that you’re practising to learn how to write an exam instead of learning something,” she said. Teachers here are more flexible, she said, and allow their students to try new things. “I think that’s a good thing,” she said. “I think here is like learning how to learn.” Teachers generally are considered
more friendly and approachable in Canada. “Here you can laugh together and have a good time,” said Schuetz. “Teachers are more open here,” said Kim. Most international students also agree Canadian schools offer more options than schools at home. Kim, for example, wouldn’t have learned to play the clarinet and saxophone at a Korean school because schools there don’t offer band. Schools in Germany, meanwhile, don’t offer school sports, and Schuetz, who ran track and crosscountry for CSS, also wouldn’t have had a chance to take journalism,
cooking and film and television courses at school there. Ghanian schools, meanwhile, have fewer resources than Asante has found at Chilliwack schools. “There’s more opportunities here,” said Asante. But providing international students with a positive experience while generating $1 million a year in revenue is only one half of a winwin equation, according to Tiechko. Hosting students from all over the globe also gives local kids a glimpse of the diversity beyond Chilliwack city limits. “To have our kids exposed to that is just as important,” said Tiechko.

The hugest, most jacked graduating classes in the history of Sardis Secondary! For the past three years, Sardis Secondary has offered its students a stable environment in which we learned to explore and grow, as the students develop their sense of individuality and originality. The graduating class of 2011 has managed to create an identity uniquely its own during its years of high school life, and would like to express their heart-felt thanks to all of the teachers, administrators, and staff that have aided them in achieving this great milestone. Also, to the future students of Sardis: take charge of your own life, and make the most of every opportunity. Get ‘er done, grad double one! Hessey Ohm -Valedictorian

Graduation: A time of celebration, a time of reflection. A time to realize how significant the connections we’ve made through our last 13 years have been. To date, graduation is the most important event in our lives, and it started when we took our first steps through the front doors. It all started back in 2006, when we were just a young group of immature middle school students, most of us hating the idea of school and waking up at 7:00 a.m. five times a week. Now, five years later, we’ve come to love and appreciate school for what it has given us. We have made ties with our teachers, gained a valuable work ethic and learned the meaning of respect. To put it simply, we have grown up. Not only have we become mature young-adults, we’ve become independent members of society who are ready to take on the world. Graduation is also a sad moment in our lives as we are all discovering are own unique paths that will take us away from our normal routines of high school. It’s hard to believe, but leaving school is not as easy as we thought it was. But it’s for the best, and the excitement of pursing our dream careers and lives will persevere through anything. The new friendships we’ll make, the life lessons we’ll learn and the added responsibilities we will take on are all part of life after high school. Whatever path we take, we know it’s the right one for us. It’s what makes us distinct and special people.

Looking at our grad class, there is so much to be proud of. The amount of scholarships and bursaries some students won are astounding. This has to go down in G.W. Graham history as one of the most successful grad classes ever. 06149107

CLASS OF 2011
CHILLIWACK SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL It feels like only yesterday that we, the Grad Class of 2011, began a journey upon a path that none of us had travelled. Grade 10 was only the beginning, for we had no clue what we would ďŹ nd ahead. The path seemed endless, with surprises at each and every corner, but by striving for the highest, together we continued on. In the remaining weeks of Grade 12, the conclusion to the path we have been wandering down for the past three years is upon us. Graduation may draw a close, but it is not the end, just the beginning. Shortly, we will embark on a new beginning. Yet, the journey ahead is much longer and continual; a future known as adulthood. Graduates, in the midst of Commencement, do not view any high school experience with a thought of regret, or mixed emotion. As Dr. Seuss once said, "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened." Chilliwack Secondary has assisted in brightening our horizons, and has shaped the young adults we have become today. On behalf of the Grad Class of 2011, I would personally like to thank the staff, teachers and students for everything you have done for us. We could not have done it without you; the countless time and effort put in by all of you has not gone unnoticed. Looking back on the years, I would not change a thing. Undoubtedly, Chilliwack Secondary is THE best high school in Chilliwack. Serving my role as Student Body President has impacted my life in a way that I cannot describe. Goodbye CSS, and thank you once again. To the Grads: all the best. I truly hope that each and everyone's future is exciting and full of adventure. Congratulations Graduates of 2011. Do not forget the time you spent at Chilliwack Secondary. For one last, ďŹ nal time: "Chilli! Chilli! Chilli! Wack! Wack! Wack!" Farewell Chilliwack, remember to "Stay Classy," as you "Strive for the Highest." Student Council President, Brock Wortman

HIGHROAD To the Grad Class of 2011... ACADEMY ow, what a journey it’s been. Some of us have been here since kindergarten, and we were joined along the way by 32 other individuals who came together to make this class the unique group

W
we are today. I am proud to be a part of Highroad Academy graduating class of 2011.
We couldn’t have done it without the amazing support of our families, our teachers and our friends. For all the sacrifices you’ve made for us over the years; the driving back and forth, getting us from one thing to another; the patience to teach and explain to us valuable lessons of life; and the never ending love and support you have shown us, we say ‘thank-you.’ As a class, we have had our fun times and our play times, our field trips to Victoria and all sorts of other places, our provincial sports trips and our grad trip: all filled with moments we will never forget. We’ve had our ‘family times’ where we were real with each other and shared from our hearts. These moments have brought us closer as a class. I have learned a lot from my time at Highroad, and as we graduate, we each take 13 years of experience and wisdom into the next chapter of our lives and the beginning of adulthood. As I consider all of these lessons and what is coming next, there are three that I consider of the most importance. First, be yourself. We are all unique individuals, with our own talents. We don’t have to try and be someone we are not because we have a role to play that no one else can fill. The second lesson is to choose good friends. Like our community here at Highroad Academy, we need to find friends who care about us and will be positive influences in our lives. Thirdly, and most importantly, we need to trust in God and put Him first in our lives. God has great plans for each and every one of us, and we should never give up on God because HE will never give up on us. As Paul says in Philippians 3: 12-14, “I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.” We are all about to embark on the biggest journey of our lives. There is so much in store for all of us, and we leave Highroad Academy grateful to all those who have helped us to be the people we are today and who have inspired us to be the people we will be tomorrow.

TRUTH IN ''EMPLOYMENT'' ADVERTISING Postmedia Community Publishing makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711, Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.

The new legislation allows for up to three years. Persons who deem that their interest in the properties is affected by the proposed amendment bylaws will have an opportunity to be heard at the Public Hearing or, if you are unable to attend, you may send your written submission, including your name and address, to the City Clerk’s Office by 4:00 p.m. on the date of the Public Hearing. All submissions will form part of the record of the Hearing. These proposed bylaws may be inspected between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, from Wednesday, June 8, 2011 to Tuesday, June 21, 2011, both inclusive, in the Office of the City Clerk at City Hall, 8550 Young Road, Chilliwack, BC. Please direct your enquiries to our Planning & Strategic Initiatives Department at 604-793-2906. Please note that no further information or submissions can be considered by Council after the conclusion of the Public Hearing. Karla D. Graham, CMC City Clerk
