Metro builds farmland inventory
Delta councillor says regional project should provide clearer picture of what’s happening to valuable lands BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Metro Vancouver is trying to get to the bottom of who owns farmland in the region and what they’re doing with it. The district in the past few months began to compile a farmland inventory, which Ian Paton, a Delta councillor and member of Metro’s agriculture committee, says should provide a clearer picture of what’s happening to lands valuable for growing crops but also seen for their development potential.
“Hopefully they’ll come up with some kind of statistical booklet in six months or a year from now that’s going to outline what is privately owned by farmers, what land is owned by developers and investors, or foreign ownership,” he said. “There’s land in Delta that’s owned by people in Central America that farmers are farming, so everybody looks at it and thinks the farmers own that property when they’re only leasing it from a land management company that’s managing these properties for foreign owners,”
Paton said. The longtime farmer, noting the regional district will also look at irrigation issues, said the inventory will likely note certain addresses where properties are not being actively farmed or even abused. Paton said south of Delta municipal hall on Highway 17, for example, there’s a piece of farmland that’s been sitting unused for decades, going fallow and overgrown with vegetation. “I don’t know who owns it but I know it’s not a local farmer. I guess they’ll let it sit there until
some day somebody says we should put houses there,” said Paton. He also pointed out a large farm property along Highway 10 near 72nd Street that is only partially rented out for farming. The property has become an overgrown eyesore with old farm buildings crumbling. “When I was a kid growing up, people used to take a Sunday drive from Chilliwack and Abbotford down to Ladner to look at a couple of show places and that was one of them...it’s just an absolute travesty because these
are the guys who end up winning in the long-run. The South Fraser Perimeter Roads had to buy about eight or nine acres of land off them and I guarantee you they’re paying him huge money for it.” Paton said the region or municipalities have to look at either more effective incentive program or punitive tax measures to ensure farmland is at least farmed. Longtime Richmond Coun. Harold Steves, who chairs the committee, noted the inventory should also give a clearer picture of what parcels of farmland have See FARMLANDpage 3

Feet owner’s ID confirmed by coroner One foot discovered partially submerged in water and still encased in a shoe on Westham Island in 2008 BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
The B.C. Coroners Service this week announced it has confirmed the identity of the individual whose feet washed ashore on two separate islands in 2008. The feet were found on Feb. 8 and June 16, 2008 on Valdez Island and Westham Island respectively. Delta police were called to the 2800-block of Savage Road on Westham Island on the morning of June 16, 2008 after someone discovered the foot, which was still encased in a shoe, partially submerged in the water. Each foot was in a matching size 11 Nike running shoe. The coroner’s office said Tuesday that, through an exhaustive post-mortem investigation, the feet were identified by DNA analysis as belonging to a 21-yearold Surrey resident, who was reported missing in January 2004.
The person’s family has been notified but the name has not been released. “Autopsies indicated the feet had not been mechanically removed but rather separated through the natural processes that occur in a marine environment,” coroner Stephen Fonseca said in a news release. “Foul play has been ruled out.” The discoveries were two of several made in 2007 and ‘08. In total, seven feet belonging to five individuals were discovered between August 2007 and October 2009. So far, the coroner’s office, with the help of RCMP and municipal police department, has been able to positively identify four of the feet as belonging to three individuals. Efforts continue to identify the three remaining feet, which originate from one male and one female. “To date, no evidence indicates any of the deaths are suspicious.”

TFN member files injunction to halt work on SFPR Two First Nations members have filed for an injunction to halt the construction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road. Claiming the construction would disturb sacred burial sites, Tsawwassen First Nation member Bertha Williams and William Burnstick, of the Cree Sioux First Nations, filed a civil suit in Vancouver Supreme Court Tuesday against the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, the Minister of the Environment, and the Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.
They claim the new road in Delta would “go through a number of burial sites that are of spiritual and sacred significance.” They claim the government was well aware the highway project would have an impact on archeological and burial sites but took no steps to modify or redesign the plans. The area contains a site referred to as St. Mungo’s, which a government archeology and environmental assessment report stated contained human remains. The site, on the shores of the river near the southern foot of the Alex Fraser
FARMLAND from page 1 things like roads or churches on them. He explained that the exercise is necessary as the population will soon have to make some long-term plans on how it will feed itself. “How much land is being held by speculators and isn’t being farmed? We’ve got one farm in Richmond that’s a hundred acres, The Featherstone Farm, right by the (Massey) tunnel. It’s sitting vacant and the owners are offshore owners who have no intention of
farming it and are hoping some day they can get it out of the ALR (Agricultural Land Reserve) for industrial development,” Steves said. Steves said the future seems uncertain in Delta and Richmond where Port Metro Vancouver and B.C. Rail are quietly purchasing acreages, likely to convert farmland for other purposes. Another concern is that Port Metro Vancouver will end up buying lands from private interests and build, claiming they’re under fed-
bridge, was the home of a historical fishing village, and is believed to contain
middens with artifacts from three different Coast Salish First Nations cul-
tural periods dating back 5,000 years. The pair are represented by lawyer Jay Straith, who is also representing the Burns Bog Conservation Society in a separate lawsuit against the federal government. The government has 21 days to respond. A protest camp on River Road that had members of several groups opposed to the SFPR was recently disbanded after they were warned an injunction would be filed. The highway is to be completed in 2013. A 15-member community liaison committee for
eral jurisdiction, something Steves said the port authority already claimed it has the power to do. Noting the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture is working with Metro staff on the inventory project, Steves, saying he also wants to know why one individual in particular has been quietly acquiring Delta farm parcels, said the South Fraser Perimeter Road is another factor. “When the South Fraser Perimeter Road went through we got a report from the (agricultural) land commission on who the owners were and they con-
tacted all the owners and they found a whole pile of numbered companies where the road was going to go through. So at least some of the land in Delta has been acquired by private interests in hopes of getting the land out of the ALR for industrial use.” In his report on the ALR last year, Auditor General John Doyle noted the preservation of agricultural land is fundamental to securing food production for future generations, particularly given the uncertain effects of climate change on food imports and agricultural systems.
Coun. Ian Paton says it annoys him to no end to see farm properties such as one on Highway 10 in Ladner owned by those allowing the lands to go fallow and buildings dilapidate. He said he remembers when the property was actively farmed decades ago but it’s clear it’s being held for long-term development.

Preliminary hearing next year for accused in Szendrei murder BY
TOM ZYTARUK
Optimist contributor
The North Delta teen charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of 15year-old Laura Szendrei will have his preliminary hearing next April and May in Surrey provincial court. The hearing is set for 14 days, to begin April 10. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 27, for a pre-trial conference. He remains in custody. The accused was 17 years old when Szendrei was killed, so it is illegal to publish his name as the Youth Criminal Justice Act shields his identity. Szendrei died in hospital on Sept. 26, a day after she was viciously beaten in broad daylight while walking along a path in the Mackie Park forest, in the 8200-block of 110th Street in North Delta. The Crown plans to seek an adult sentence if the accused is found guilty. That would work out to life without eligibility to apply

Under the YCJA, a first-degree murder conviction carries a sentence of 10 years, with six in custody. Police have not released how Szendrei was killed. There’s speculation a baseball bat was used but police have not confirmed this. There was no sign of sexual assault.

Traffic, trucks, SFPR effects topics at meeting Mayor, in partnership with Delta Chamber of Commerce, host get-together for local industrial businesses Traffic, trucks and the effect of the impending South Fraser Perimeter Road were top of mind for many members of the local industrial business community at a meeting in North Delta last week. Mayor Lois Jackson, in partnership with the Delta Chamber of Commerce, hosted an early morning breakfast meeting last Thursday for businesses operating on Annacis Island and Tilbury Industrial Park. Geoff Freer, executive director of the provincial government’s Gateway Program, gave a presentation outlining the South Fraser Perimeter Road route, the current status of construction, as well as the intended effect it will have on traffic through that area. “Nobody wants a road through their community and yet we need some kind of transportation network,” Freer told the group of business representatives, several of who said they are supportive of the new road. The 40-kilometre, four-
lane SFPR will run along the south side of the Fraser River, extending from Roberts Bank to the junc-
of the $1 billion project will be completed in 2013, a year later than the original target. Delta police Insp. Kaare Coupar spoke to the group about crime trends in the area and what business owners can do to protect themselves. Two of the biggest concerns are tractortrailer thefts, which have seen a spike in recent months with 20 incidents in the last four months, and theft of metal. Coupar said theft of metal incidents, which tend to increase FILE PHOTO when the price Gateway Program executive director Geoff of certain metFreer gave a presentation on the South als, such as Fraser Perimeter Road at a meeting in copper, are on North Delta last week. the rise, usually result in fairly low losses but tion of Highway 1 and a lot of damage. worth of metal was stolen but the thieves left $20,000 in damage. Coupar gave business owners a few crime prevention tips, including: establishing strict in/out policies with mandatory ID checks, surveillance cameras, ensuring bushes and trees are trimmed and installing lights at all access points. Steven Lan, Delta’s director of engineering, gave an update on several recent improvements made in the area aimed a helping the flow of traffic; and deputy engineering director Hugh
Fraser brought the group up to date on this year’s flood risk. The snowpack is average this year, he said, and flooding is unlikely this year. However, with the cooler than normal temperatures this spring, Delta continues to keep an eye on the situation and is prepared for any increase in water flow. During a question period at the end of the meeting, many speakers voiced concerns about the effects of traffic congestion along River Road. Freer said the SFPR
would help to alleviate that problem and all agreed that other solutions would have to be looked at in the meantime. “The meeting was a great opportunity to interact with owners of local businesses in Delta,” Jackson said after the meeting. “I wanted to ensure they are aware of recent infrastructure improvements that we have undertaken, understand issues related to the South Fraser Perimeter Road, and, most importantly, I heard what they had to say and listened to their concerns.”

Sentencing today for man involved in schoolyard fight BY
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
The Ladner dad convicted of assault for his role in a schoolyard fight more than two years ago will learn his fate today. The 46-year-old was convicted in March of two counts of assault stemming from a fight outside Delta Secondary School in April 2009. He is scheduled to be sentenced in Surrey Provincial Court this morning. His son and two unknown males were also involved in the incident.

Neither can be named because the son is a young offender. The assault stemmed from an earlier altercation between the victim and the man’s younger son. The father, older son and two unknown males arrived at the school around 3 p.m. on April 15, 2009. Several witnesses testified that the accused brought his vehicle to an abrupt halt in front of the school before the two unknown males, one armed with what was described as a pipe, jumped out of the back of the vehicle, chased down and attacked the victim. The father and son caught up, and the father called the other two off to allow his son to “get in there.” The two youths started fighting, as the father “uttered words of encouragement and said ‘this is what you get,’” Judge Paul Dohm said in March as he handed down his verdict.
Another man tried to intervene to get the father away from the scuffle. The accused head butted the man, loosening two teeth and splitting his lip. The other victim’s injuries included a swollen nose and black eye, a bump on the head and cuts and bruises to the face. During the trial, the defendant gave a different sequence of events. He testified that he was only at the school to pick up his two sons for hockey practice when the older son unexpectedly jumped out of the vehicle and chased down the victim and started a fight. He told the court he did not get physically involved in the altercation and was trying to get his son out of the situation. As for the head butt, he said the man attacked him and the head butt was incidental. However, the judge said the accused’s version of what took place that day “lacked a ring of truth.”

Delta’s Park Patrol back on the beat JESSICA KERR
With spring upon us, Delta’s Park Patrol is back out on the streets working with the municipality and police department to try and keep local parks safer and reduce vandalism. Every summer, in cooperation with the parks, recreation and culture department, Delta police hires a group of students to patrol the many parks in the community during the evening hours to ensure that all park users are complying with municipal and provin-
cial laws. Beginning last week this year’s team of five students toured about 20 North Delta and 30 South Delta parks.
“When necessary, they can request a police response for any situation they can’t handle.”
A/Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer
“They interacted with many of the parks’ visitors,” said Delta police spokesperson A/Sgt. Paul
Eisenzimmer. “Constantly in radio communications with the Delta police dispatchers, the Parks Patrol team had to call the police to report one rowdy group of youths disturbing a North Delta park.” In past summers, the team has helped stop vandalism, interrupted parties and dissuaded other law breakers simply by their presence and constant patrols, he said. “When necessary, they can request a police response for any situation they can’t handle,” Eisenzimmer said.
“Additionally, the Parks Patrol is there to help is someone is stranded or encountered some other difficulty within the park.” Since the Park Patrol program was brought in, damage to public property within the parks has been reduced, littering has diminished and repair and maintenance costs have dropped. “Conversely, park usage has increased with families and seniors less concerned about risks associated to improper behaviour because of the regular appearance of the friendly park patrollers,” Eisenzimmer said.
Canucks fans celebrate series win at Delta intersection Canuck fans across the Lower Mainland were out in force Tuesday night celebrating the team’s first trip to the Stanley Cup finals in 17 years, with thousands converging at a Delta intersection. The celebrations started shortly after Kevin Bieksa’s surprising game and serieswinning goal halfway through double overtime of Game 5 to send the team to
the finals. Within minutes, thousands of fans took to the streets around the Lower Mainland with many in the Delta area making their way to the corner of Scott Road and 72nd Avenue in North Delta. Delta police estimated that around 5,000 fans made their way through the intersection to celebrate the win.
Delta police spokesperson A/Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer said the crowd, and the officers on duty, were in a celebratory mood “because most of us are Canucks fans as well.” Delta has been sharing policing of the intersection, which straddles the Surrey/ Delta border, on playoff game nights with Surrey RCMP. Eisenzimmer said the

Elections BC will be mailing out HST referendum ballots between June 13 and June 24. All ballots must be received by Elections BC by July 22 or in person at a Service BC Centre. The question for the HST is: “Are you in favour of extinguishing the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and reinstating the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) in conjunction with the GST (Goods and Services Tax)? Yes/No.” July 8 is the last day for unregistered voters to request a ballot from Elections BC. The results from the HST referendum are expected in August. In recent interview, Fight HST leader Bill Vander Zalm said, “I quite frankly believe the tax will disappear. They’re telling us it could take up to two years to get rid of it. It’s amazing how they can bring in a tax in a matter of weeks but when they want to get rid of it, takes years.” The government this week promised to cut the 12 per cent harmonized sales tax by two percentage points, provide rebates and hike corporate tax rates.

MURPHY’S LAW It was only a matter of time. The idea that garbage collection might be reduced to just once every two weeks would take some getting used to should it be implemented (and I suspect it will), but when you think about it, it’s really just a natural progression given our burgeoning environmental conscience. We’ve been weaning ourselves away from the disposable society of years gone by, so it’s not a stretch the next step would be to further limit how much we can dispose of at the curb. It wasn’t that long ago (OK, so it’s been more than 20 years now) that you could put out as much garbage at the curb as you pleased. There was a two-can limit in the contract even back then, so it really wasn’t supposed to be that way, but it was a time, before curbside recycling, when pretty much everything ended up in the landfill and two cans weren’t always enough to hold it all. I can’t remember the exact year, but I know it was in the late 1980s when Delta council made the decision to go with a new trash collector. That’s when the old company decided to enforce the two-can limit during its final run through town, which just so happened to be the week after Christmas, which probably has the largest volume of the whole year. I can recall the streets still littered with cans and bags even after the garbage truck had come by, the result of years of being able to put everything and anything at the curb. We’ve come a long way since then, but it’s clear we’ve still got a ways to go. Beyond the arbitrary garbage diversion targets set by politicians and bureaucrats, the bottom line is that it’s everyone’s responsibility to lessen our ecological footprint. And the simplest way to get us to do so is not to allow us to put as much at the curb, forcing us to change habits and dispose of our waste in other ways (and by that I don’t mean ditches or the neighbour’s yard). The once-every-two-weeks proposal is not ideal, particularly in terms of smell in the summertime and the very real possibility of attracting scavenging wildlife, but I take it it’s more cost effective to pick up two cans every other week than one can each week. The kicker in all of this is Delta doesn’t pay a tipping fee at the Vancouver Landfill, so there won’t be any savings (beyond what should be reduced collection costs) by sending less trash that way. Our reward is the knowledge we’re doing something beneficial for the environment, which is likely better motivation in the long run anyway.
Where are we supposed to find the money for these increases? IAN ROBERTSON
COMMUNITY COMMENT In a recession inflation is not normally present. Prices fall until a new level is set and the economy resets. Compared to Greece, Ireland, etc., we have come through this past recession in amazingly good shape. However, some recent events and announcements have left me wondering. BC Hydro announced a few weeks ago that it plans to raise rates by over eight per cent per year for the next five years, so that the total effect will be more than 50 per cent in this period. They say they must renew the system and provide for expansion. What happened to money spent in the past? Is it ‘pay as we go’ (BC Hydro used to issue bonds for this approach), or pay up front or in advance (new motto)?
BC Ferries has announced major increases — over four per cent/year on major routes and over eight per cent on other routes (such as Gulf Islands). They claim most costs are out of their control. I wonder about the geriatric condition of much of the fleet. The ‘Spirit’ ferries arrived for Expo ‘86 and only three new ‘Celebration’ ferries (already two years old) can be found. Would you trust an airline whose planes were averaging 30 to 50 years age? So — why the increase? We are told fuel costs and reduced government grants. Meanwhile the fares have increased over 50 per cent in the past few years. Fortunately, in both this and the Hydro situation the increases are now under political review and freeze by Victoria. TransLink continues to look for ‘pots of gold’ wherever they think they can find them. They continue to use only the most advanced form of rapid transit available. Cries to copy Calgary’s less expensive system for less travelled routes such as UBC continue to fall on deaf ears. The actual cost of a ride on the Skytrain or Canada Line is about three to five times what we pay so we need many hidden taxes (hydro,

tax bill, gasoline and parking, etc.) to make it work! Closer to home the Mayor and council have told how they held the line on the budget and taxes for this year. Aside from recognizing that this is an election year and taxes never increase in that period, they have raised taxes by 2.9 per cent. With garbage added, it’s over three per cent, and with all the Metro Vancouver charges it can be well above that. Looking at my own tax bill, the Delta portion has increased 5.3 per cent, and the total taxes I pay have increased by 6.4 per cent! Inflation, even with runaway gas prices, is less than three per cent. Many of us have seen little, if any, raises. Pensioners have seen only meager increases of 0.5 per cent in the Old Age Pension and 1.7 per cent in Canada Pension Plan. So where do all the bureaucrats — who are employed by us — expect us to find all the money for these increases? It’s the bureaucrats who control these factors who seem to say (under their breath): I’m alright Jack, how are you? This Jack says: too much!

Why the alektorophobia? Editor: I’m confused. There’s a multitude of green lectures, projects and programs, but why the alektorophobia (fear of chickens)? “Chickens are too noisy, too smelly, they might cross the street.” Oh, cats and dogs are silent, have no excrement that smells and never cross the street? “Chickens may be abandoned.” (As some dogs and cats are.) True, but on the other side, think of what chickens can teach about
responsibility, commitment, nature; what both adults and children will learn and enjoy. Are we green? Then why not replace, with backyard chickens, slug bait and other pesticides needed to keep the pest population down? If yes, why not allow two to four backyard hens in Delta? I hear, “Not in my backyard.” OK, but is it all right for your neighbour to have them? Homeowner gardens,

community gardens? Great! Why not fresh homegrown eggs as well as the fresh flowers and vegetables? One other question: Are we an agricultural community or not? If not, why all this ALR and Southlands discussion? If you are in favour of this green effort, please email mayor-council@corp. delta.bc.ca (in the title: Yes to backyard hens in Delta). Thanks for taking 60 seconds to make a difference. Vera Ganderton
Hey dog owners, clean up after your pooches Editor: This morning when my dog “did his business” in the park I noticed, as I went to pick it up, there was “the business” of someone else’s dog there too. So I picked that up. Later in the park my dog
discovered some more left behind mess and promptly rolled in it. Lovely! Last weekend while cutting my lawn I had to pick up two little bombs and when I mentioned this to my neighbour on the corner he told me he has to do a
“poop search” every couple of days and usually finds three or four. To all the dog owners who don’t pick up after their pet I have only one thing to say: “What’s wrong with you?” Tom Robb
Editor: This month, BC Guide Dog Services working in partnership with Autism Support Dogs, trained and placed its 100th service dog. We’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate our volunteers, donors, and supporters in this community for this tremendous achievement! We are so proud to be based in Ladner. All of our puppies are raised in the homes of volunteers, who provide love and care 24/7 for about 16 months. On average, it costs $37,000 to breed, raise,
and train one of our dogs, which is far too great of a burden to pass on to a recipient in need. Thanks to our donors and volunteers, we are able to provide guide dogs for visually impaired people and support dogs for families with autistic children at no cost to them. We are so thankful to have the support of our volunteers and sponsors. Congratulations again for making a difference in so many lives. Here’s to the next 100 dogs! William S. Thornton
Tory candidates headed to ‘graveyard of gov’t patronage’ Editor: With a view to the surprise Senate appointments of three failed Tory candidates, Larry Smith (QC), Fabian Manning (NL)
and Josee Verner (QC), to Canada’s graveyard of government patronage, it’s timely to reflect on the difference between the U.S. and Canadian senates:

Stick to the facts on Southlands
Editor: Re: Mayor in tune with shift in public sentiment regarding Southlands, letter to the editor, May 18 As is often the case when I read Helen Kettle’s letters, I wonder why she persists in distorting the facts? What shift in public sentiment does she refer to? Public sentiment of the majority of residents supports the agricultural designation of the Southlands. Mayor and council have ignored the will of the majority. Here are the facts: 1. Green shirts notwithstanding, as of March 7, 1,986 pieces of correspon-

designation of Southlands in the updated OCP. 5. There is nothing (and never has been) preventing Sean Hodgins from farming this land. The ALR designation has nothing to do with it. 6. Virtually all of Southlands can be rehabilitated to be productive farmland. This fact was confirmed during the Mayor’s Summit. 7. Summit participants have chosen to ignore viable alternative ideas to utilize Southlands for nondevelopmental purposes. 8. The Southlands Community Planning Team has been remiss in fully
examining the ecological impact of 1,900 housing units on our community, and thus reaching a selfserving conclusion that LEED-inspired design is ecologically friendly. 9. Acquiring agricultural land and allowing it to remain fallow for decades does not allow anyone the right to argue that the community must now concede to development because the land is “not productive.” That is a shallow and selfserving argument. The 1st Kirkland celebrated their annual link day at Deas Island park on May 14. Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and their leaders completed a variety of fun filled activities including, water bottle rockets, a catapult, potato guns and even building a trebuchet. They also found time for more traditional activities like a scavenger hunts, building wooden structures, tug of war (the youth beat the leaders) and hiking where they participated in the worldwide Jamboree on the Trail. The evening culminated with a campfire, skits and songs and a first class potluck dinner. Early registration for the 1st Kirkland Ladner Scout Group is now open until June 15. McHappy Day raises $5K for non-profit Reach
Society is raising money for new centre in Ladner McDonald’s Restaurants longest running fundraising event, took place May 11 across Canada and despite the rainy weather customers came in droves to show their support. This year the Ladner and Tsawwassen McDonald’s once again chose local charity Reach Child and Youth Development Society for McHappy Day proceeds. Reach, a charitable non-profit organization, has been helping children with special needs and their families in Delta since 1959. A total of $5,000 was raised for Reach through the sales of coffee, Big Macs and Happy Meals. Customers also donated cash on top of their purchases. For the past several
years McDonald’s owner Steve Krawchuk has chosen Reach as the charity of choice for the Ladner and Tsawwassen McHappy Day. “You have no idea how much we appreciate having a loyal corporate sponsor like Steve Krawchuck and the support of the Ladner and Tsawwassen McHappy Day patrons,” said Irene Forcier, Chair of the Reach Child and Youth Development Foundation. “The funding from McHappy Day will go towards Reach’s Building for Children Together Campaign to develop a community based child development centre in Ladner so that more children with special needs can be supported more effec-
tively.” Reach’s campaign is raising $4 million for the new Reach Centre. The centre will be located beside the Ladner Pioneer library, where the Ladner Kin House is currently located. It will have therapy and counseling rooms, youth program areas, specialized lending libraries and an inclusive preschool with an accessible playground. The centre will also have an expanded events room for community workshops, and space for other organizations in the community supporting children and youth with special needs. Delta has provided the land. Proceeds from McHappy Day brings them one step closer to their goal.

Road trip prompts Ladnerite to pen a memoir BY

adner’s Giuseppe Gandola got the ball rolling on his memoir while on a four-month road trip. After selling the La Strada Ristorante Italiano in 2004 he bought an RV and drove across Canada. During the trip he told stories from his life to his wife Sandra. “She said, ‘You should put them in a book,’” says Gandola, 64. “I’m not a writer or anything, but then it kind of developed into something.” That something is his new book Out of the Black Pot. “It took about six years to put it all together,” he says, adding that he got help from Sandra and a pair of editors along the way. Gandola is from Bellagio in northern Italy. He left home at 16 to travel and made his way around Europe, including, France, Germany and England. Gandola came to Canada in 1975 and has been in
Ladner since ‘76. He worked at the Hotel Vancouver, at La Belle Auberge and then at La Strada for eight years before buying the local restaurant. “Running a restaurant was an adventure. It was always my dream because I started off as waiter in Italy,” he says. Gandola says the restaurant had a family atmosphere and that he wanted to treat the staff well, recalling that he was treated poorly as a young waiter in Italy. He says he’s attended former employee’s weddings and still gets Christmas cards from some of them. Gandola’s daughter also helped him with the selfpublished book. “My daughter designed the front cover, I designed the back. It’s plain and simple,” he says. Out of the Black Pot is available at Heritage House Interiors and Glacier Beer and Wine in Ladner or by contacting Gandola at 604-946-0039 or gandola. giuseppe@gmail.com.

Darsey Meredith tries on a steady cam at the Gulf Islands Film and Television School.
Tsawwassen’s Darsey Meredith added another award to her resume earlier this month at the 16th annual EyeLens Film, Video and Animation Festival at the Rio Theatre in Vancouver. Meredith’s film, How Important Is It?, won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Public Service Announcement at the event, which serves as the annual prize festival for the Gulf Islands Film and Television School on Galiano Island. Meredith, 16, was there last year for a two-week directors program.
“We showed up expecting to get started on our two-week directors program and they said you have one day, make a public service announcement,” she says. “We had one day to come up with a concept, shoot it and edit it. That was exciting and fast but it turned out quite well.” How Important Is It?, which Meredith made with two other team members, deals with using cell phones while driving. “Picking up your phone while driving is one of the biggest dangers, especially with everyone in high school constantly glued to their cell phones,” she says. The film can be seen
at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=jFE05yA6r-I. The South Delta Secondary student saw another short film she worked on, Breaking Limits, win multiple awards at last year’s EyeLens festival. It took home honours for scriptwriting, youth drama, best actor and most YouTube views. The film, a dramatic piece about childhood depression, was screened at Reel to Real International Film Festival for Youth last month in Vancouver. It was cool to see her work up on the big screen, says Meredith, adding that a lot of work went into the project. “It’s your baby. You bring
it from this idea in your head to see it broadcast up there, it’s just amazing.” Meredith was back at the Gulf Islands Film and Television School last summer where she made her own film, Grandparents. “It was very meaningful for me,” she says, noting she’s very close to her own grandparents. Meredith, who’s in Grade 11, is enrolled in the acting academy at SDSS. She’s interested in going to UBC for the film studies program and would like to pursue a career in filmmaking. “All aspects of filmmaking and film production have really caught me,” she says. “I’d love to do it all.”

“Can you give me some advice on what plants to put on the north side of my house. It gets some sunlight but a lot of shade too. I need ideas of some pretty plants that don’t need a lot of sun. I do not like evergreen bushes or trees. Alison J. E-mail Heucheras are available in many beautiful leaf colours and the foliage remains throughout winter. They’re very hardy and enjoy shade. Some have pretty flowers too, but with many the leaves are the main attraction. Many ground-covers handle shade well including epimediums, bugleweed (Ajuga reptans) and violets – but ground-covers need a firm hand and a sharp

spade to stop them from over-running weaker plants. Primroses love shade increase discreetly when happy. Alpine strawberries (the smaller runnerless type) also grow well in partial shade and even fruit well there. One of the most striking shade-dwellers is pulmonaria which not only has bright blue flowers (that open pink) but leaves which in various cultivars vary from silver-spotted to totally silver. Medium-tall shade-lovers include columbines which, if allowed to self-seed, produce flowers of many different hues. Hellebores have a very long flowering period in spring and so does the blue-flowered brunnera. Some brunneras have stunningly-beautiful leaves, such as the form ‘Jack Frost.’ Bergenias also do well in shade. These produce fat heads of pink or white flowers in very early spring. Their evergreen leaves which often develop red-
dish shades through winter. These are rugged plants which slowly spread and can cover large areas. In summer shade, astilbes produce plume-like flowerheads usually in white, pink or red. Heights can vary from three-feet (1m) to very dwarf depending what you choose. For brightness in spring, the yellow daisy flowers of doronicums are a standout. Other easy shade-lovers include valerian, foxgloves and Fuchsia magellanica. This fuchsia is the oldfashioned hardy one with small single flowers in magenta and deep purple. If you live near the sea, you may be able to over-winter so-called ‘hardy’ doubleflowered kinds like ‘Dollar Princess’ or ‘Santa Claus.’ But it’s the species Fuchsia magellanica that comes through severe winters in southwest B.C. Well on Your Way 1. Stir the Pot - Picture 1 This exercise is designed to use your back and abdominal muscles to stabilize your spine (and hips for that matter as well). While it may look innocent, this one movement is a million times more effective that any abdominal crunch. • Place your elbows on a large stability ball and balance on your toes, feet hip width apart like Erika has done in the picture. • Keeping your elbows under your shoulders, stir the ball in a circle like it is a spoon and you are stirring a big ol’ pot of oatmeal. • Perform this stirring action for 20-30 seconds and then switch the direction of the stir. • Tip: make sure that you maintain a long straight

Devils off to Kamloops as Valley champs Senior girls soccer team earns record setting 10th consecutive B.C. berth after four straight victories in playoffs BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
The last time Kamloops hosted the provincial “AAA” girls soccer championships, Stephen Burns was a teacher at nearby South Park elementary who had successfully guided the South Delta Sun Devils into unchartered waters. Fourteen years later, the Devils return to the Interior city as one of the most dominant programs in the province and Burns is now a fixture on the SDSS teaching staff — also running the recently launched girls soccer academy at the school. South Delta secured a record-setting 10th straight appearance at the provincial tournament by capturing its third-ever Fraser Valley championship with a 2-0 win over Panorama Ridge last week at the Winskill turf field. The Devils will be seeking their second B.C. title when they begin pool play next Thursday in a group that includes Sentinel, Kitsilano and Lord Tweedsmuir. The 16-team tournament concludes next Saturday What makes South Delta’s decade long run even more impressive is the Tsawwassen school not exactly being blessed with a deep pool of elite players. On paper, the Sun Devils looked to be overmatched against a Charles Best team that featured 13 Metro level players in its line-up.
Instead, they produced a 1-0 semi-final victory. “It’s a big deal for these girls to be playing for the school,” said Burns of the winning environment. “I think continuity is important for any school athletic team to have success. These girls want to be here and understand what it takes to win.” When word leaked a former national team player and Vancouver 86er was teaching at South Park, Burns was convinced to help out a program that needed some stability and leadership. Sure he has enjoyed the success, but support of the players, parents and entire community is what he finds most gratifying. “I look back to 2002 when my father passed away. I had a special team that year that really helped me out a lot personally. I will never forget it,” said Burns who also has a close relationship with longtime assistant and SDSS staff member Brent Sweeney. Last season, the Sun Devils found away to qualify for the provincials despite having a roster that featuring mostly junior age players. The expectations for 2011, with relatively the same team intact, was to take another step forward but the girls have exceeded their goals to become a bonafide provincial contender. South Delta went unbeaten in league play to earn the top seed for the Valley tournament, then survived

South Delta Sun Devils Tara Nordin receives a hug from teammate Emma Mackie after her insurance goal sealed a 2-0 win over Panorama Ridge in the Fraser Valley “AAA” championship game, played last week at the Winskill turf field. an opening round scare with a 3-2 win over Heritage Woods. The team settled down to do what it does best — playing sound defensive soccer to produce three shutout wins en route to the title. The championship game avenged a quarter-final loss to Panorama Ridge a year earlier. Abbey Rekis opened
the scoring in the eighth minute and Tara Nordin added an insurance goal in the late stages of the second half on a well-taken free kick from 25-yards out. That was more than enough for goalkeeper Nicole Sydor to record her 16th shutout of the season in 23 games. “We pride ourselves in our defensive play and
the girls really do a good job of pursuing the ball,” added Burns. “I thought we had our best game of the season in the semi-finals (against Charles Best) and we changed up our formation a bit for the final (35-2) to counter (Panorama Ridge) having two (National Training Centre) players.” The provincials will be
the Devils’ third significant trip of the season. They earlier participated at tournaments in Kamloops and Victoria. To help keep the costs down for the players, the team is grateful of the financial support it has received from the Century Group (Tsawwassen) and the Saffron Restaurant in Burnaby.
Charuk named to national women’s volleyball team The senior team will train throughout the summer and compete in a number of international events, starting with the PanAmerican Cup, July 1-9, in Chihuahua, Mexico. Team Canada will also be competing at the NORCECA Continental Championship (Sept 12 – 17 in Caguas, Puerto Rico) and the Pan-American Games (Oct 15 – 20 in Guadalajara, Mexico).

Its first taste of international competition will be a an exhibition series against Argentina next month. “We are very excited for both the Senior and Developmental teams this year,” said head coach Arnd Ludwig. “I am confident we have put together the best team to compete internationally this year and challenge for a spot at the Olympics.”
Charuk, a former star with at the high school level with the South Delta Sun Devils, is on a full-ride scholarship to the University of Houston. For the second time in her career, she was on the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America Honorable Mention list after earning the award in 2008.

Berekoff does the trick against Lakers With two key offensive players out of the line-up, Mike Berkoff picked up the slack to lead the Delta Islanders to their fifth win in seven starts. The local product netted a hat trick and added one assist in a 9-6 win over the Burnaby Lakers in B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League action on Wednesday night at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The hosts were playing without all-star Mike Mallory and team captain Ryan
Keith. The Lakers took advantage of their absence to enjoy a 5-4 lead after two periods. Delta took control in the third with five unanswered goals, including a pair from Berekoff. Intermediate call-up Eli McLaughlin and Chris Jones each scored a pair. Singles went to Andrew Schwab and Trenton Matsuzaki Sam Clare, Jamie Malanfant and Dan McDermott had two assists each. Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Letters, emails, reports, short literature, calls, visits, short trips, errands, paperwork – these fill your life, especially midweek. The week is busy but not terribly important. Money themes continue, mostly good ones. Money might really rush toward you now to June 21 – but beware, you could spend it just as swiftly, or spend even more than comes. Bank it, be tight-fisted! Saturday (June 4) begins a year of grand money luck, especially in earnings and selling items. (Early hints of this Sunday/Monday, when all’s well in dollar-land.) Focus on home, children Friday/Saturday. Taurus April 20-May 20: The weeks ahead feature money, earnings and spending, possessions, memory, rote learning, and sensuality. All these, by June 4 onward will “tweak” or more deeply, give birth to, significant and beneficial “heavy money” situations. Heavy money = investments, mortgages, financial partnerships, dealings with other people’s money, inheritance: generally any money that is big, shared and intended to grow. (E.g., a car will not grow in value, but land often does.) Your charm and magnetism soar Sunday/Monday: impress someone! Money, midweek – beware a false idea. Speak humbly Friday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Congratulate yourself – you’re on top, winning! Your energy and charisma are climbing (and will increase more next week). Impress someone, seek attention, start significant projects, tackle formerly daunting tasks. Rest and plan and deal with government or head office Sunday-Tuesday. Then plunge into brave action Tuesday eve to Thursday. You might need to choose between your personal drives and a career/reputation situation. Either choice is OK: base it on your stage of life. Be cautious with money Friday: spend Saturday. Saturday begins 12 months of relative quietude: be patient.

Cancer June 21-July 22: The weeks ahead emphasize quietude, contemplation, solitude, lowered energy, particularly this Wednesday/ Thursday. Despite this, however, your social and optimistic side remains strong – especially Sunday to Tuesday. Your psychic and spiritual side emerges – so, hopefully, does your charitable side. This is a good time to contemplate your plans for the future, especially Sunday to Tuesday. June 4 begins 12 months of increased socializing, especially in your work environment. You might not feel the full effect of this until your birthday onward. Your energy bounces back Friday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The emphasis lies on wish fulfillment, social delights, light, friendly romance, optimism, the joy of living! Be ambitious Sunday to Tuesday. Soon (Saturday) you begin 12 months of super career luck. You’ll find bosses, parents and VIPs are more open to your ideas, willing to give you a boost up the ladder. Your creative, romantic and pleasure-loving side can help promote you and your ambitions. Midweek’s for social joys, entertainment and romance. Issue invitations. But retreat Friday/ Saturday – conditions are unstable Friday. Humour a “pushy” higher-up – until late June. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The weeks ahead bring pressure to perform and opportunities to enhance your status or prestige. Your career, relations with higher-ups and ambitions will occupy you. Until June 21, you might invest in a foreign country or international fund, etc. For this same three weeks, avoid legal hassles. Pay attention to Sunday through Tuesday – days when your mind will naturally drift toward the “larger questions,” toward international events, higher learning, compassion for all, and gentle love. This entire zone will be very luckily brought into prominence this June to next (2012).

May 29 - June 4, 2011
Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: A mellow, understanding mood flows over you this week and the next two (especially this midweek). Study abstract subjects, religion, philosophy – any higher learning – or to write, travel afar or handle legal matters. You might meet love. Sunday to Tuesday contains mysteries – look beneath surface appearances. Your sexual and financial instincts awaken. It’s a superb time to go for a health diagnostic, change your lifestyle, or make a commitment. All these things (from mysteries to sex to finances) face huge luck from June 4 to mid-2012. Your life is about to change! Caution Friday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Late May and June draw you into life’s depths. Mysteries, secrets, large financial manoeuvres, investments, sexual urges, lifestyle commitments draw you, especially midweek. Study this area for a clue to fortunate action, projects in the year-long phase between June 2012 and July 2013. Until then, though, play this area lightly. (Actually, if you’re planning that far ahead, mark July/August of 2012 as “highly questionable.”) Your true luck, for the immediate 12 months ahead, begins this Saturday: you’ll find it in relationships of every stripe. You might relocate, or marry! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The emphasis lies on relationships, relocation, agreements, contracts, negotiation, opportunities, competition, challenge, opposition, litigation, especially midweek. You’ll receive the positive side of these if you’re diplomatic, eager to please and a team-player. The negative needs no explanation. But one note: in general, it’s better not to vigorously pursue either side, now to August 2012. A Gemini might play a key role. You’ll accomplish a lot of work Sunday/Monday. Work will expand strongly now to mid-2012. Learn to relax! Invest or offer intimacy Saturday, NOT Friday!
Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Lots of work faces you, especially midweek, when a new chore could begin. Better plunge in these few weeks, as a major romantic, pleasure-oriented or “happy venture” phase begins very soon, and will last for 12 months. You’ll want to be relatively free of restricting duties by then. (In late June, a powerful relationship influence starts, bringing romantic urges to a tempting climax.) In fact, this romantic phase has already started, in minor ways. Sunday to Tuesday contain some tantalizing urges! Careful with relationships Friday. One affair might end, another start – soon. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The weeks ahead feature romance, creativity, pleasure, vacation, sports and games and successful risks. Something might start in a very small way in these areas midweek – something that can grow in future. But a lot of emphasis remains in your area of home, domesticity, security and children (especially early week). You have to avoid friction or sharp words here (or anywhere near a cafe or kitchen – watch cuts and burns, too) through June 20. On June 4, a year of luck begins in these areas: home, children, real estate, retirement, new beginnings. A new home? Caution Friday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The emphasis lies on your home, security, children, nourishment, on Mother Nature, retirement, endings and beginnings. A minor new phase or project might begin in these areas midweek. Usually this phase (late May to late June) creates a restful, sluggish mood designed to give you a mid-year rejuvenation. But this time a lot of errands, trips, visits, calls and paperwork keep you busy. June 4 starts a year in which your career will involve a lot of running around and communicating. Romance disappoints Friday, flows smoothly Saturday. One met before Friday isn’t compatible. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
