Police costs soar with cup run
Chief estimates bill could be as high as $140,000 if final series between Canucks and Bruins goes to Game 7 BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
Policing the post-game celebrations during the Canucks’ playoff run could cost upwards of $100,000, Delta’s police chief said this week. Back in April, when the playoffs started, Jim Cessford told the Delta police board he expected enforcing celebrations at Scott Road and 72nd Avenue in North Delta could cost as much as $100,000 if the team had a long run. On Wednesday, Cessford said those costs could run as high as $140,000 if the final series goes to Game 7. Round one, which went to seven games, cost the department an additional $16,500, while rounds two and three, which went to six and five games respectively, cost an extra $11,500 and $13,500. As the Canucks have made it closer to the Stanley Cup, the number of people heading to the intersection at the border of North Delta and Surrey has increased significantly. Cessford said during the first round, crowds were averaging between 500 and 800. That number has grown to around 7,000 during the final round. With more people heading out to celebrate every Canuck win,
Fans gather at the corner of Scott Road and 72nd Avenue on the Delta-Surrey border to celebrate Canuck playoff victories. the department has to deploy more resources. Cessford said there are between 40 and 50 Delta officers and reserve constables at the ready on game days. Surrey RCMP is also supplying the same
number of officers. “We had no idea that the number of celebrants would be as high as it is,” he said. Cessford stressed officers are not deployed to spoil anyone’s

The 15th season of the popular Ladner Village Market gets underway Sunday. An estimated 150 vendors will set up shop along three blocks of 48th Avenue in the first of seven installments in 2011. The market will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tracey McKnight, one of the market co-ordinators, says foodies will be in their glory this year as over 50 food vendors will offer samples of their products. The market will also feature art, cloth-
ing, jewelry, handcrafted items and much more. McKnight says while there will be a good selection of produce to start the season, more vegetables and fruit become available as the market dates progress. A range of musical performers will be playing at the market this season. Blues artists Wes Mackey and Kenny (Blues Boss) Wayne are scheduled to perform on Sunday. The market will run on alternating Sundays through to early September. See full story on Page 18.

Life for the Berger family changed abruptly in May 2003. At the age of two-and-ahalf, Mary Berger was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. “She had been exhibiting the classic signs of diabetes — excessive thirst and urination, as well as insatiable hunger for about a week,” said Anne Berger, Mary’s mom, adding the family was in denial about the possibility of Mary having diabetes because the disease does not run in the family. “I have a friend whose daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 the year prior to Mary,” Berger said. “I met up with her at a play group and had her test Mary.” What should have been a blood sugar reading of around four was 26. “Our lives changed immediately.” The family spent the next four days at Children’s Hospital, although Mary was allowed to return home each night. “Our initial reaction was one of great sadness, similar to a death in the family,” Berger said. “Many tears were shed for what was lost, just wanting to go back to the way things had been.” Life for the young family changed immediately. “We had a newborn at home — Mary’s brother Brian had been born just 11 weeks earlier,” Berger said. “Mary’s schedule and her well-being became the priority, taking away the precious moments we should have had with our son. The fun and spontaneity was taken out of everything and juggling the schedule of a newborn and a newly diagnosed toddler became the norm.” Mary had to eat seven times a day from specific food groups with three 90minute fasting periods to help regulate her blood sugar levels. “This could be a challenge to get a toddler to do this, not to mention all the needles that she had to have each day just to stay alive,”

Twelve-year-old Mary Berger, a youth ambassador with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, will lead Mary Marchers in Sunday’s Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes. The team has raised $45,000 over the years. she said To date, the family has calculated that Mary has had about 38,000 finger pokes since her diagnosis. Now 12, Mary, who is in Grade 6 at Sacred Heart School, plays more of a part in managing her disease. She has to test her blood sugar about 10 times a day with her mom or dad, Tom, taking turns testing it two or three times at night. In 2005, Mary made the switch to an insulin pump, a programmable electromechanical device (about the size of a cellphone) that delivers a continuous supply of insulin that also allows her to give an instant extra dose for food or to correct a high blood sugar. The pump allows her to have a more relaxed schedule. She does not have to
eat at specific times any more and it lets her be a bit more like everyone else. However, she still has to closely watch what she’s

difficult to regulate her blood sugar. “It is the most burdensome disease,” she said. “Not much more than an hour goes by each day that I don’t have to make a decision about managing my diabetes — whether it be counting carbs, checking
blood sugar, giving insulin or drinking a juice box.” Type 1 diabetes does not prevent Mary for doing anything but it does interfere with every aspect of her life. “It affects me at school. If my blood sugar is too high or too low I can have difficulty concentrating on my work,” she said. Diabetes also interferes with sports. An avid young athlete, Mary plays on the Invaders 99 Rep B girls fast pitch softball team and the Ladner U13 Pumas Rep soccer team. She’s also on her school’s track and field team and likes playing basketball and volleyball. However, Mary has to monitor how she’s feeling while she’s playing. “If I feel my blood sugar is low, I have to immedi-
ately stop what I am doing, take fast acting sugar and stay out of the game until my blood sugar stabilizes,” she said. “This is really hard for me to do since I just want to play.” There are two types of diabetes. Type 1, also known as juvenile diabetes, occurs when the body does not produce insulin. It is commonly diagnosed in childhood. There are no known preventative measures that can be taken to prevent the disease and people affected by it are usually otherwise healthy and are at a healthy weight. Type 2 diabetes is predominately diagnosed in adults and occurs when the body becomes insulin resistant. Its occurrence is usually due to lifestyle choices such as diet, weight and exercise. Mary said she finds it frustrating when the two types get lumped together as the same disease. “Type 1 diabetes is completely different that Type 2 diabetes,” she said. “It is not related to eating a lot of sugar or any specific lifestyle. Neither I, nor my parents, could have prevented this.” Mary is a youth ambassador with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to bring awareness to people living with the disease. The family has also taken part in the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes every year since Mary’s diagnosis and her team, Mary’s Marchers, has raised about $45,000 over the years. “When I was diagnosed, my mom was told there would likely be a cure in 10 years,” Mary said. “Next May will be my 10th anniversary of being diagnosed and I would like to make this dream come true for me, my family and everyone else with Type 1 diabetes.” This year’s walk is on Sunday in Stanley Park. Farmhouse restrictions called unfair
Realtor and farm owner says multi-generation families are being discriminated against by legislation SANDOR GYARMATI
Restricting the size of homes on farms is blatantly unfair, according to a Ladner farm owner. Saying farmers are being denied any meaningful consultation, Gurdial (Dale) Badh, a realtor who also owns an 80-acre blueberry farm and a smaller farm on Ladner Trunk Road, is angered at efforts to limit the size of houses in the Agricultural Land Reserve. “I was told we shouldn’t be building a big house on a farm and asked, ‘Why not? Are you telling me I should live somewhere else and farm these properties as an absentee farmer? Why can’t we have two or three generations living in one house?’” The Ministry of Agriculture recently announced it’s inviting comments on possible guidelines for properties in the ALR. Metro Vancouver earlier called on the ministry for regulations. Delta already has a bylaw in place that contains restrictions. Also an owner of South Boutique Blanche Intimates

He pointed out where he wanted to build his family home — near the edge of the property with poor soil conditions. In a letter to his ALR neighbours, outraged Richmond property owner Roland Hoegler said, “Politicians are trying to score brownie points with the general public, knowing that ALR property owners are fewer in numbers and have less impact at the polls.” Huntington, who was on council when it passed Delta’s farmhouse bylaw, said the suggestion there was any racism is nonsense, noting it was the same accusation leveled when a house size cap was introduced in North Delta. Whether it’s a mansion on a hobby farm or a home the size of a hotel on the ALR, the productivity of the land is being diminished and abused, she said.

MLA votes in favour of reducing HST to 10% Ballots go out this week in province-wide referendum
(“This is the Hottest AND Coolest Deal of the Century” ... especially if your furnace is over 8 years old) Kevin Falcon Finance minister B.C. Chamber of Commerce president and CEO John Winter, saying there’s been a lot of misinformation about the blended tax, said small business in the province would be the biggest winners by keeping all of the benefits of the HST and making their products more affordable to consumers. The HST took effect July 1, 2010. According to the Fraser Institute, many are likely hesitant to show support because they believe the HST shifts the tax burden from businesses to consumers, not aware businesses passed on the old tax in the form of higher prices. Fight HST leader and former premier Bill Vander Zalm said Falcon’s hint that previously exempt goods and services, such as restaurant meals, could be subject to PST if the referendum doesn’t go their way is a “total betrayal” of citizens. Depending on a work stoppage at Canada Post, the mail-in ballots were to start arriving at households this week. Completed ballots must be mailed by July 22.

Delta South independent MLA Vicki Huntington voted in favour of the amended HST rate in the legislature last week, but it will be up to voters to give the final stamp of approval in a mail-in ballot. Prior to the vote by MLAs, Huntington told the Optimist it’s difficult to predict the result of the referendum. Saying the plan does shift the tax burden slightly, she added, “There’s certainly a large number of people who feel it’s a tax worth saving and the problem was it was too high and it should come down a couple of points. Then there are other people who continue to be annoyed about the deceitful way in which it was brought in and the fact with this incentive is over a three-year period, you have no change in the exemptions.” Finance Minister Kevin Falcon announced recently that if British Columbians vote to keep the HST in the referendum, the rate would be cut from 12 to 10 per cent by 2014. Some British Columbians, meanwhile, would receive a one-time “transition” cheque. After Falcon’s announcement, the NDP said it’s just an attempt by the Liberals to buy votes. Families will pay more for many items previously exempt from the PST, noted New Democrat finance critic Bruce Ralston. “Their claim that it’s a choice between 10 and 12 per cent is absolute fabrication and a deliberate
misrepresentation of what the HST vote is all about,” he said. “The truth is voters will be voting to get rid of the B.C. Liberals’ 12 per cent HST in favour of going back to a fairer system where items such as prepared food, nutritional supplements, basic telephone and cable services and countless other items would only be taxed with a five-per-cent GST.” However, returning to the PST/GST would not necessarily mean bringing back all the old exemptions, Falcon said, noting the government would face an estimated $2.3 billion cost over three years if voters reject the HST. John Cummins, who was acclaimed as the provincial Conservative Party leader recently, said the government’s proposal is bad for business. “By increasing the corporate tax rate two per cent and delaying the small business tax cut (to offset lowering the HST rate), the Liberals are hurting our economy — and in turn families. As it is, since the introduction of this tax, economic growth has slowed 36 per cent. “The initial purpose of the HST was to help business, and these changes eliminate that purpose. This current tax regime combined with the minimum wage hike, tells business that the NDP might as well be in power.” Cummins also accused Premier Christy Clark of blatantly trying to buy votes by offering one-time rebate cheques.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW When you look at it in the context of Delta’s history, Lois Jackson’s run as mayor is quite remarkable. Nearing the end of her 12th year at the helm of the municipality, Jackson’s time in Delta’s top job is the longest in the last half-century. You have to go back to John Kirkland’s tenure from 1945 to 1959 to find a reeve (or mayor) who has served the community for a longer period. If she were to win a fifth term this November, she would surpass Kirkland and would find herself behind only Alex Paterson’s 25-year run during the early part of the last century in terms of mayoral longevity in Delta’s 132-year history. Considering politics is likely a much tougher game today than it was 100 years ago, it makes Jackson’s staying power all that more impressive. Enter Krista Engelland. The former five-term councillor, who came up short in a bid to unseat the incumbent mayor three years ago, announced this week she’ll be giving it another try in November. Engelland came up more than 3,400 votes shy in 2008 despite beating Jackson by over 1,000 in Tsawwassen and losing by only 100 or so in Ladner. Her South Delta support was no match for Jackson’s immense popularity in North Delta, which has carried the veteran politician to victory in four straight elections. So, does Engelland stand a chance this time around should Jackson choose to seek re-election? It’s undoubtedly a hill to climb, but it might not be insurmountable. Any politician, particularly one in a lead role such as a mayor, premier or prime minister, has a shelf life, one that usually starts to expire around the decade mark. The longer you’re around, the more decisions you make and the more voters you’re bound to alienate. In that sense, Jackson is playing on borrowed time, although it should be noted she’s as good as any politician in recognizing which way the political winds are blowing and how to adapt to them. There’s no galvanizing issue here to get voters excited, but a bunch of smaller matters, everything from taxes rising above the rate of inflation and the Delta Arts Council debacle to the clumsy handling of the Southlands and the mayor’s Metro Vancouver commitments, will likely translate into lost votes. Jackson can counter by trumpeting the many amenity improvements, Delta’s lower debt, the preservation of our envied quality of life and more as reasons for giving her another term. Voters still have five months to make up their minds.
Grads leave with optimism — and burden of student debt NATHALIE HEIBERGHARRISON
COMMUNITY COMMENT At Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s convocation ceremony Wednesday morning, 211 students gathered to walk across the stage and shake the school president’s hand. We had a lot in common, too, not counting our matching red polyester robes and one-size fits all caps. We all made the decision, however which way, to start a postsecondary program. We had all, I’m sure, spent more than a few late nights trying to scrape our way through the program. We all managed, somehow, to see it through. And sadly, with a few exceptions, we’re leaving school and embarking on the next part of our lives with empty pockets and a burden of debt. This is not the sur-
prising part, seeing as student debt nationwide has topped $13 billion. (That doesn’t even include provincial and private loans, just those through Canada Student Loans.) So when the new federal budget was announced Monday, I was feeling optimistic. (You’ll find that recent graduates tend to be optimistic.) Sure, the Conservatives have the luxury of a majority, but I thought maybe, just maybe, they would throw a couple left-wing bones to the 60 per cent of Canadians who didn’t vote them in. Unfortunately (and surprisingly) not. Aside from money for university-level research, there wasn’t anything substantial offered for the more than one million university students registered in Canada. In the budget they expanded the Canada Student Loans program, but by the time it’s fully implemented, it will just be to the tune of $34 million a year. They’ve also set aside $10 million a year for students who study abroad, through tax relief and Registered Education Savings Plan assistance, and are making occupational, trade and professional examination fees eli-

gible for tax relief. If you’ve dabbled in math, or common sense, you’ll know this doesn’t amount to much. The Canadian Association of University Teachers was critical of the budget too, for both its allocation of research money and lack of funding for students’ tuition. In a press release, the association’s executive director, James Turk, said the government’s priorities were out of whack. “You build a better society by investing in education, not in prisons,” he wrote. It’s a sentiment we’ve heard a million times over, but it doesn’t make it any less true. Education is what all 211 students at the convocation ceremony had invested in. We all made the decision to continue with our schooling so we could get better jobs, upgrade our skills and, quite simply, keep learning. What we were given in return, though, was record high tuition prices and stagnate funding from all levels of government. Our matching red polyester robes may have felt stifling out in the sun, but I can assure you, student debt is even more stifling.

to see all agricultural land be made available for residential or industrial uses? It would certainly appear so. Pretty sad if that’s true; shortsighted and sad. Incidentally, he refers to a mysterious group of people, that appeared out of nowhere, as being the ones who suggested returning the farm to the ALR. The “mysterious group” that he alludes to was in fact Delta council; which, by the way, can often be found congregated at municipal hall. After council put forward its proposal to place the land back into the ALR, over 70 per cent of the people who wrote in said they supported it. Editor: Re: Discussion to return property to ALR is illadvised, letter to the editor, May 27 Firth Bateman’s letter is another unfortunate example of the misinformation and lack of knowledge that surrounds the ALR as it relates to the Southlands. He attempts to promulgate the misconception that by putting property into the ALR it somehow affects the rights of the landowner; he is wrong. The Southlands was and is designated agricultural. Putting it into the ALR simply reinforces that designation and in no way impinges on the owner’s rights to farm that land. The ALR was actually formed without the permission of the various landowners. In 1973, 12,000 acres of land zoned municipally as agricultural was given new, additional protection from development by inclusion in the newly created Agricultural Land Reserve. Additionally,

HST makes common cents for farmers
Delta Farmers’ Institute president welcomes the benefits that a streamlined taxation system provides
GUEST EDITORIAL As president of the Delta Farmers’ Institute, I would like to provide a farm perspective on the ongoing HST debate. Pre July 2010: “Taxes just keep on coming. PST for this, PST for that, although I can file for allowed exemptions. Oops, we also have GST, but we can also file on that for allowed exemptions. Hmm ... now I have to get my accountant to file one exemption for PST and another exemption for GST. “It’s sure nice to have exemptions, but wow, the cost of getting those exemptions is sure hard on my farm budget, and all that paperwork is driving my accountant and me crazy. It seems to me I am spending more of my time tracking available exemptions in
processes. That type of spending might also help the local supplier that I deal with and help them keep their business profitable. That would be good for me and for our community.” While the above comments may seem far-fetched to a lot of readers, it is important to a farm business, or any other small business, to take advantage of available cost reductions to meet the marketplace and, in some instances, just to be in the market to begin with. Farmers have been at a serious disadvantage ever since the introduction of the GST with a double handling of exemptions. Those allowable exemptions under PST were not always consistent with the exemptions allowed under GST, so it was a burden on our time to ensure the proper documentation was in order. All of that added significant cost to our business bottom line. Farms today, to be competitive in local and international markets, must

Think about your own tax spending today, and ask yourself some questions, such as: Will it be more efficient to have a provincial PST administration for tax, plus a federal GST administration for tax, or is it more efficient to have one combined HST administration for tax? Wouldn’t it be better to save those administration funds to put into other government programs or further tax reductions than to waste effort on duplicate services?

Seems to me it would be good for a lot of small businesses where they also have allowable exemptions, like my farm has, to go to a system where we can reduce costs.” Post July 2010: “HST tax — wow. They took my wondering and did it. “Now I can reduce my cost to file for exemptions as there’s only one filing. Maybe I can spend that cost savings on something to improve my farm processes. It might just help me reduce the costs and become more competitive. “Just maybe I can get a larger share of the market and allow me to increase my output and start upgrading our equipment and

Sacred Heart students enjoy the ‘Odyssey’ Ladner students travel all the way to Baltimore to take part in the Odyssey of the Mind world competition JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
The Sacred Heart Odyssey of the Mind teams may not have won any medals last week but they came home happy with the experience. The two Grade 6/7 teams were in Baltimore, Maryland for the Odyssey of the Mind world competition after placing first in their respective divisions in provincial event. Odyssey of the Mind is an international education program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students. In teams, the students are challenged to apply their
creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting an interpretation of a literary classic. Sacred Heart entered four teams in the B.C. competition — two made up of students in grades 4 and 5 and two with students in grades 6 and 7. The local teams competed against 68 teams representing 35 schools in the province. The two Grade 4/5 teams placed second and fourth in their respective divisions. The two Grade 6/7 teams, however, both placed first in their divisions, which qualified them to move on to the world competition. Both teams faced some
additional challenges, said Clare Goguen of Sacred Heart School. One team had a box of props go missing and had to improvise and make do with what they could find while some of the other team’s props arrived damaged and they had to spend several hours trying to fix them. “Both teams placed in the middle of the pack for their problem and age division — low 30th placement out of 65 teams,” Goguen said. “This is very impressive given the depth and experience of the American teams in their divisions,” she said. “Our goal is to end up
somewhere in the middle and the teams once again rose to the challenge.” In the spontaneous portion of the competition, which requires teams to solve a new problem on the spot, both teams surpassed their scores from the provincial competition. “Judges, organizers, coaches and parents alike felt that these students had been wonderful representatives of our school and were impressed with their friendliness, great teamwork skills, creativity and respect shown to other competitors and coaches alike,” she said. “The teams come home tired but pleased with their
performances and with the new friendships they had

Skor
Sweet sweet Skor was surrendered to the shelter because her previous owners added a baby to their family and kept finding Little Miss Skor sleeping in the baby crib. They were concerned about this behaviour and so decided to surrender her. Skor has been around other cats, dogs, children and everything in between and has been tolerant and friendly with most. She is a little timid and unsure of her new surroundings and doesn't seem to handle stress very well; though we believe that it will not take her long to go back to her old ways!

Ladner teen Rachel Wilkinson got some new wheels thanks to the Shriners Wednesday. She was presented with a special three-wheel bike worth about $4,000 at Delta Secondary. “It’s specially designed for her, with her needs. It’s adjusted for her, with the safety strapping based on her medical condition so she’s safe on the bike,” said Karan Schwartz, Rachel’s mom. She didn’t wait long to try the bike out and was cruising along the Ladner high school grounds in no time. Rachel, 15, has a genetic disorder known as 22q13 Deletion Syndrome, is nonverbal and had major hip surgery last year. She still has difficulty walking and riding the bike will give Rachel more freedom, Schwartz said, adding that riding will be good from a physical therapy standpoint as well.

The review was the culmination of the squadron’s training year and in part involved a formal parade and the showcasing of the many activities the cadets were involved in. Exhibits ranged from first-aid, aviation ground school, band, field craft and marksmanship. While on parade the cadets stood polished and proud as the reviewing officer, Major A. McCorquodale, took time to inspect and briefly chat with several of them. The cadets received honours and awards for their performance and contributions to the local community.

Attractive relationship In a world that is spiritually hungry, “Jesus,” “church” and “Christianity” have become troublesome and negative words. Darrell Johnson (Regent College) reflects that when Christianity was founded on Palestinian soil it was about having a relationship with a person named Jesus. When it landed on Greek soil, it became a philosophy, on Roman soil an institution, on English soil a culture and on North American soil a commodity to be sold in books and pamphlets. I would add that people on monologue and not dialogue sometimes share Christianity in an arrogant and offensive way. He continues that what attracted persons to Jesus was he cared for people in a way we humans are unable to. His “com-passion,” his
love, his concern and his willingness to give his life for the transformation of humanity — even his enemies — drew people almost magnetically to follow him. They wanted to experience and share this kind of life. Beyond essential human needs, the greatest pain of human existence is to believe that no one cares or understands. I began following Jesus because I experienced in him, and through those who were already his disciples, care and compassion beyond human measure. We call it “Grace” or “Agape” — the love that gives of itself — free, unearned, unmerited unconditional love and acceptance. That fact alone still makes a relationship with Jesus attractive to me. Jim Short can be reached at minister@ladnerunited.org.

The Ladner Village Market kicks off its 15th season on Sunday. Around 150 vendors, as well as local merchants who stay open, are expected to offer their wares at each installment of the market this year. Foodies in particular should have plenty to choose from. “There’s all sorts of different foods we’ve got at our market. People just love it,” says Tracey McKnight, one of the market co-ordinators. She notes over 50 food vendors will be offering samples of their products. Offerings that are new this year, or haven’t been available at the market for some time, include maple sugar and glutenfree products, seasoned salts (which are great for marinating), chicken and curries, McKnight says.
There will also be pesto sauces, humwould be a conservative estimate when mus, cheeses, infused vinegars, hothouse asked how many people she expects to tomatoes, mushrooms and artisan breads. attend. A native of New Brunswick, Richard’s website notes “jazz, blues, bossa nova, musical theatre, traditional French songs all meld into her music.” The three-block open-air market, which takes place rain or shine, runs along 48th Avenue, from Elliott to Delta streets. The event is billed as Western Canada’s largest open-air market. It runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on alternating Sundays in June, July and August while there’s one market date in September. The market, a Ladner Business Association event, is a member of the B.C. Association of Farmers’ Markets. Visit www.ladnervillagemarket.com for more on the event.

Bandfest brings the music The seventh edition of Ladner Bandfest is bigger and better than ever. A record 21 adult community bands will perform on two stages in Memorial Park tomorrow and Sunday in the free, family-friendly event. “The Ladner Bandfest has become the place to be in June for all the community bands around B.C.,” says chair Curt Jantzen, who is also the music director for the host band, the Delta Music Makers. “We had 24 applications for 21 spots this year, so three bands are on the waiting list. This is very exciting, since we had only three bands performing at our first event.” Ladner Bandfest has rapidly become the largest gathering of adult musicians in Western Canada. Two new bands are included this year: the Metro Vancouver Firefighters Band, which rehearses in Burnaby, and the Vancouver Volunteer Band, which is a pickup group that travels to many parades and festivals around B.C. “Bring your lawn chairs and your whole family to Memorial Park and enjoy a weekend of fabulous band music,” says Jantzen. Food services will be provided by the TOOBs and large tents will be set up for the audience to escape from the sun (or rain). On Saturday afternoon, MLA

Memorial Park will be filled with music this weekend with the seventh annual Ladner Bandfest.
Vicki Huntington has been invited to say a few words of welcome to the musicians and audience. Also, Mayor Lois Jackson and band-leader Dal Richards have each been invited to support the Ladner Bandfest and the work of all the community bands. The Ladner Bandfest is hosted by Ladner’s own Delta Music Makers Community Band, which is performing at 1:40 p.m. on Saturday. The 10-member organiz-
ing committee is comprised of dedicated band members, who meet and plan all year for this weekend event. “For musicians, the magic of this event lies in hearing all the other bands,” says Jantzen. “By definition, a community band performs in its own community, thus rarely hears other groups. The Ladner Bandfest allows this opportunity, while also providing a weekend of outstanding free entertainment for the public.”

Khajuraho’s racy temple carvings Erotic depictions bring tourists to buildings constructed from ninth to 14th centuries BY
I
MARGARET DEEFHOLTS Optimist contributor
n the Judeo-Christian world, the sacred and the profane are polar opposites — the one hallowed, the other obscene. In Hinduism, the two concepts meld into one another-indivisible and eternal as the cosmos. Nowhere is this more evident than in the erotic temple carvings of Khajuraho in northern India, where spirituality and sensuality, playfulness and profundity meet in a joyous celebration of life, energy and passion. It is a gloriously sunny, but mild January morning and the temples are silhouetted against a deep blue sky. Tourists cluster around their guides; some of them gaze bemused at the explicit sexual positions depicted on the walls, others snicker and exchange sly winks. My own guide, Jagdip, is an earnest young man and he has his spiel down pat. “Originally about 85
temples were built here between the ninth and 14th century, but today only 25 survive.” He gestures across the site’s manicured lawns and bordering flowerbeds filled with orange marigolds and scarlet cannas. “We are in the Western group and we will visit the rest in the Eastern group a little later.” He turns back to the temple façade before us. It is adorned with divine and semi-divine figures — celestial dancers, heavenly beauties, musicians, cherubs and, above all, several amorous couples. In one frieze, a voluptuous woman, her hip outthrust, looks flirtatiously up at her partner; he looks adoringly down at her while cupping one of her full, rounded breasts in his palm. Along the base of another temple an elaborately carved band runs around the parameter depicting couplings in every conceivable position. Standing in front of

the Kandriaya Mahadeva temple, I goggle at a pose so contorted it prompts me to remark, “How could they possibly be enjoying this?” The pose in question shows a male standing on his head while straddled by a female, the pair of them in coitus, the female supported by two heavenly maidens. Jagdip clears his throat. “Yes...well this is a yoga pose, and is possibly Tantric in origin.” Tantric rituals are often linked to dark occult
practices, but it is also a philosophy that centres on sexual energy as being part of the cosmic circle of rebirth arising from death and destruction. The arousal of sensual passion also brings with it a karmic awakening, and a god such as Shiva, the Destroyer and the malevolent goddess Kali, are yoked to pure energy (“shakti”) a force that fuels the universe and all things within it. Sexuality and spirituality went hand in hand even before the temples

in Khajuraho took shape. Back in the sixth century AD a scholar, Vatsyayana, who was (get this!) an ascetic and a yogi, authored the Kama Sutra, a detailed and explicit treatise on the art of love-making. This instruction manual not only lists 64 sexual positions but also gravely discusses a wide range of philosophical concepts such as Dharma, (virtuous living), Artha, (material prosperity) Kama (aesthetic and erotic pleasure) and Moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth). Indian erotic paintings mirror the sculptures that adorn Khajuraho. Like the amorous couples on the temple facades, paintings depict curvaceous women and well endowed men gazing tenderly into each other’s eyes while engaged in sexual couplings. About the same time as the Kama Sutra was written, professional temple dancers known as Devadasis were to be found in temples
throughout India. Young virgins, dedicated to the temple deity, were trained as erotic dancers; their role was also to pleasure patrons in the temple precincts using techniques described in the Kama Sutra. Today’s India, in fact, seethes with repressed sexuality. Arranged marriages are the norm, so many couples come as virgins to the nuptial bed. Carnal desires lurk in the shadows. But for the shy there is a whole world of sexual voyeurism — Bollywood movies! Indian movies do more than cater to the lascivious. They feature dramatic tales of human passion and divine adoration. They speak to universal emotions; they transcend time. Much like the erotic temples of Khajuraho. ...we look forward to meeting you soon.
The Help by Kathryn Stockett I hurried to finish reading The Help by American author Kathryn Stockett, not because I was enjoying it but because in a strange way I wasn’t. This unsettling novel centres on race relations in Mississippi in 1963, told through the personal voices of three women. The problem is, these women are all in grave danger – danger they have brought on themselves by refusing to accept the ongoing, ingrained cruelty of segregation. Stockett speaks from
experience. She was born and raised in Mississippi, and her family had a coloured maid. She states in an afterword: “I’m pretty sure I can say that no one in my family ever asked Demetrie what it felt like to be black in Mississippi, working for our white family. It never occurred to us to ask. It was everyday life. It wasn’t something people felt compelled to examine.” In this novel, Stockett finally asks that question. She speaks through Skeeter Phelan, the white, college-educated daughter of a cotton plantation owner. Skeeter isn’t pretty like her mother Charlotte, a beauty pageant runner-up. As Skeeter describes it, “Mrs. Charlotte Phelan’s Guide to Husband-Hunting, Rule Number One: a pretty, petite girl should accentu-
ate with makeup and good posture. A tall plain one, with a trust fund. I was five-foot-eleven but I had twenty-five thousand cotton dollars in my name and if the beauty in that was not apparent, then by God, he wasn’t smart enough to be in the family anyway.” In the small-town culture of Jackson, Mississippi, Skeeter knows Aibileen, Minnie and the other black maids of her friends’ families. The novel unfolds in the parlours and on the front porches of Jackson houses. Of course, the white women are typically sitting and visiting while the blacks are cooking their food, cleaning their messes and raising their children. Skeeter dreams of becoming a writer in New York City. Challenged by a senior editor to come
up with a usable idea, she begins to realize that every black maid has a story, and no one has told it yet. However, the year is 1963 – a watershed in civil rights (and wrongs) in America. Aibileen cringes but acquiesces when her boss installs a separate bathroom for her in the garage, believing “coloreds” have diseases in their urine that whites have no immunity to. The maid explains: “I don’t know what to say to her. All I know is, I ain’t saying it. And I know she ain’t saying what she want a say either and it’s a strange thing happening here cause nobody saying nothing and we still managing to have us a conversation.” Minnie goes through many jobs because she can’t help saying out loud what black servants are expected
to keep inside. Stockett’s cultural references are a weak point: her dates aren’t always accurate, and the history is too recent for readers not to remember when an important Beatles or Bob Dylan song was released. She refers to long hair and peace signs, which were not yet typical in 1963. But the murder of black activist Medgar Evers in Jackson, and Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech that August in Washington, anchor the story well in its time. The Help illustrates a deep fault line in American history. But by recounting kindness and even love between masters and servants as well as injustice, these maids show us that segregation was not a simple matter of black and white.

“ON THE ROAD AGAIN” PAYMENT PLAN
Robson top Canadian in MLB draft Ladner pitcher hopes to get deal done soon with Toronto Blue Jays after being selected in fourth round, 139th overall MARK BOOTH
After being under the microscope of Major League Baseball
scouts for the past 12 months, Tom Robson finally has a potential path in front of him. The 17-year-old right-handed pitcher from Ladner lived up to
the billing of being the top prospect in Canada when the Toronto Blue Jays selected him in the fourth round (139th overall) of the MLB Draft.

Ladner’s Tom Robson starred for Canada at last summer’s World Junior Championships, pitching six scoreless innings against powerhouse Cuba. The Grade 12 Delta secondary student was the country’s top MLB prospect.

Toronto is not only Robson’s favourite team but, along with the San Diego Padres, had expressed the most interest leading up to this week’s draft proceedings. He had been in regular contact with Blue Jays’ local scout Jamie Lehman and other evaluators got to see him shine on the mound for the national junior team, especially at last summer’s World Junior Baseball Championships in Thunder Bay where he pitched six scoreless innings against powerhouse Cuba. “Any time Toronto or San Diego was up, we turned the TV down a bit,” said Robson who followed the draft on the internet while watching the Price of Right with his friends on Tuesday morning. “I knew (the Blue Jays) had a lot of picks in the early rounds so there would be a good James chance. “It’s something I have been thinking about for a long time so there is definitely a sense of relief to it. You’re aware of all the scouts (at the games) but you just had to block out of your mind and focus on pitching. I have grown up watching the Blue Jays and I can’t wait to start playing for them.” For that to happen, Robson must come to terms with the team prior to August 15 — a deadline imposed by the MLB to sign college eligible draft picks. If things go his way, it will happen quicker than his 92-mph fastball. His Seattle-based advisor Jim Lindell, whose clients include AJ Burnett and North Delta’s Jeff Francis, has already begun discussions with the Blue Jays on a potential contract. The main hurdle is expected to be the amount of his signing bonus. MLB teams typically follow a signing bonus slot based on where a player is selected in the draft. The amount is usually higher for high school age prospects who could play at the collegiate level on a scholarship. In 2010, the Blue Jays signed
14 of their top 15 picks, with signing bonuses ranging from $2 million to $250,000. Robson is among seven high school age pitchers taken with their top 10 selections and the Jays have indicated they will be aggressive to keep all of them. Robson is committed to pitch at Central Arizona Community College this fall — considered the top junior college baseball program in North America. However, he’s hoping the Blue Jays make the decision easy for him. “(General manager) Alex (Anthopoulos) says he wants to sign me as soon as possible and that’s what I am hoping for,” said the Grade 12 student at Delta secondary school. “But ultimately it still is a business decision. It’s got to make sense for me and for them. Paxton Usually high school players are looking for (a bonus) that would at least pay their four years of education (equivalent of a scholarship) and then some.” Robson is hoping for a different outcome than one of his off-season training buddies who was drafted by the Blue Jays two years ago James Paxton was a sandwich first round pick but didn’t come to terms with Toronto and went back into the draft. He was taken by Seattle in the 2010 draft and is now considered one of the best starting pitching prospects in the Mariners farm system. In seven starts with the Class A Clinton LumberKings, Paxton has an impressive 2.11 ERA, while recording 54 strikeouts. He has been selected to play in the upcoming Midwest League All-Star Game. “We did some throwing at the DSS gym and at Holly (park),” added Robson. “Pretty neat to think a couple of guys coming from the town the size of Ladner, with 25,000 people, would both be drafted by the same Major League team.”

They first met in Grade 1 at English Bluff elementary and now they are national rowing champions. Tsawwassen’s Robert Bracken and Graeme Dawe were members of the Shawnigan Lake School gold medal winning senior boys lightweight eight crew at the 66th annual Canadian Secondary School Rowing Championships in St. Catherines, ON. The winning boat featured two other student athletes from Delta — Saeed Naguib and Jordan Johl. The prestigious high school regatta, also known as School Boys, is one of the largest events of its kind in North America. It attracted over 2500 athletes, representing 130 schools from around the world. In a fierce battle, Shawnigan Lake hit the finish line just .82 seconds ahead of its nearest rival in the six-boat final race held over the 2 km course. The victory came on the heels of winning the same event at last month’s 41st annual Brentwood Regatta. After growing up together in elementary school, Bracken and Dawe teamed up again for Grades 11 and 12 at Shawnigan Lake — a Vancouver Island private school recognized for its outstanding rowing program. As a result of their academic and rowing achievements, the boys have received offers from prestigious universities, ensuring there will be more exciting times ahead. When they are not on the Island, the national champions train at the Burnaby Lake Rowing Club.

South Delta ’96 Invaders girls fastpitch team celebrate its tournament win at the Bantam “B” Pepsi Challenge in South Surrey.
Breakthrough win for ’96 Invaders
It was at last a golden finish for the South Delta ’96 Invaders at Softball City’s Bantam B Pepsi Challenge. After a fourth place finish the previous week at the Kelowna Summer Sizzle and earlier tournament results in North Delta (third) and Tsawwassen (fifth), the girls rep fastpitch team put it all together to reach the top of the podium. The Invaders coaches and supporters are thrilled to watch the players’ steady progress throughout the season. South Delta’s success includes a powerful pitching staff that features Zoe Gillis, Shae Dunzl and Kiana Carreiro; its hard-working catchers Carley Bogress and Haylei Smith;
great hitting by Indra Hayre, Chelsea Ezzy, and Rachel Landrigan; solid defensive plays from Taylor Critchley, Courtney Bogress, Veronica Rally and Devon Rodriguez, and the support of injured catcher Alyssa Baltzer. The team is coached by Julie Gillis, Ken Bogress and Brian Critchley. The Invaders look forward to the upcoming Delta Playdowns on June 17-18 in Tsawwassen, as well as the Lower Mainland Cup, also being held at Tsawwassen’s Brandrith Park — July 1-3. The goal is to reach the Bantam “B” Provincial Championships, being hosted by North Delta — July 22-25.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: The accent continues on paperwork, messaging, errands, travel, news and casual friends. It’s a busy but not important time. Sunday’s full of mysteries and subconscious urges (so is good for seeing within or seeking critical advice). But these – and sex, finances – can meet irritation Monday. Wisdom, a gentle outlook creep in late Monday to late Wednesday – you might spend too much on travel, culture, education or a legal matter, but these things also come to a satisfying climax. Be ambitious Thursday/Friday. You’re popular Saturday, but driving, high tech are erratic. Taurus April 20-May 20: Continue to chase money. Buy sources of knowledge and co-operate with teachers. Relationships flow well Sunday, but they might run into friction Monday a.m. Ignore a financial or sexual decision/idea Monday night – these meet success Tuesday/Wednesday (although you might overspend for an investment). Be careful with ethical or legal “assumptions” (or travel ideas) Thursday to suppertime – the practical reality is far different. These matters flow with superb luck, though, Thursday night to pre-dawn Saturday. Be ambitious – but drive carefully, and forgive computers – Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness continue high. You’ll be given almost anything you ask for – but you need to be aware that asking for a partner, marriage, relocation, litigation or a contract could lead to restriction or unexpected solitude. But these are not necessarily bad. Relative solitude will come anyway, over the year ahead, as a blessing, a healing. Do ask for advice.Take this general attitude for the whole 12 months ahead: that you will, to whatever degree you can, sacrifice your own time/ energy to support another (or others). This will bring good results. Cancer June 21-July 22: Lie low, rest and recuperate. Be thoughtful, plan, seek advice, deal with government agencies or institutions, or corporate head offices. Your charitable and spiritual side remains prominent. Next week, you’re going to burst forth with a blaze of energy, so store it up now. Sunday’s romantic, but anyone who’s attractive Monday morning is also a quarrelsome type – fair warning! Tackle chores and health concerns Monday to Wednesday. Relationships can frustrate you Thursday to suppertime (so don’t pursue new ones) but this night and Friday bring sweet, even passionate harmony!

★CATS & KITTENS★ FOR ADOPTION !
Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Wishes can come true! You remain popular, optimistic, happy. Make and accept invitations (but keep them near in time – after June 20 you’ll tire of social involvements). The year ahead is very lucky for career, ambitions, etc. Use Sunday to ground this – to examine and/or shore up your foundations, your platform for launching an ambitious bid. For example, when you’re handling long days and career pressures, a supportive family is a good foundation. Or mapping out the right territory, or lining up allies. Tuesday/Wednesday are romantic, creative – love could reach a sweet climax! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The accent remains on ambition, status, prestige relationships. Show the boss (or parents, etc.) what you can do. Sunday’s great for puttering around the neighbourhood, reading a fat newspaper, calling friends, errands and paperwork. These need a diplomatic (but opportunistic) approach Monday a.m. You reach a climax and an “ending note” in career matters Tuesday/Wednesday – all is well. Perhaps a project matures. Study long-term income and investments Thursday: these will undergo change this decade – safety key.Thursday/Friday are romantic. Chores Saturday – practise safety! Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Gentle love, understanding, a wide view, far travel, legal affairs, higher education, religion, cultural involvements – the accent continues on these. During the 378 days ahead, you are going to face superb luck in investments, lifestyle changes, sex/intimacy, therapy/healing, and/or research. Use Sunday to see what you already have, and what you accept as true – these are not where your luck lies; these will remain static. Monday morning, a partner’s or competitor’s comment, even if irritating, or a spied opportunity, shows where your luck lies. Romance unpredictable Saturday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Changes are still on the agenda, in lifestyle, commitments, intimacy, finances. But the biggest change involves your relationship sphere: it’s growing splendidly lucky. The year ahead will bring at least two opportunities to marry, form a business partnership, relocate, attract the public (e.g., as clients to your store) – almost all of these have a very beneficial money result! Remember for the past 15 years I kept saying that your true love phase would begin in 2011? This partnership year is part of that. Your energy’s good Sunday. Chase money midweek. Love late Thursday?

Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The emphasis remains on relationships, partnerships, opportunities, relocation, negotiation. Remember, this area needs a light touch until late August 2012. Actually marrying or relocating is not a good idea, unless “life brings it” – e.g., your employer transfers you. Depend more on your own efforts, carve out your own destiny, rather than chasing perceived “opportunities.” Lie low, rest Sunday/Monday. Your energy rises nicely midweek. Chase money Thursday/Friday (but expect barriers up to Thursday suppertime). Someone’s sweet, reliable. Travel Saturday – safety first! Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: You face nine more days of drudgery work, so just keep on plugging. (As hinted earlier, perform only necessary work all year; don’t make machinery, chores, health or employment a primary focus.) Soon, fresh air, new opportunities and exciting relationships will enter. The last of these is especially significant, as the 12 months ahead bring splendid romantic openings! The same period creative and speculative luck. Optimistic risk is your friend, esp. risk that, if it “wins,” will bring you more responsibility. Joy Sunday. Rest midweek, charge forth Thurs/Fri! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: This is your last week of romance, creativity, pleasure and beauty for awhile – enjoy it while you can. Be ambitious Sunday. Higher-ups are still impatient, temperamental, so be diplomatic, especially Monday morning. Your popularity surges Tuesday/Wednesday! Flirtations, entertainment, optimism abound. A romance could swell to “mad love.” But retreat Thursday/Friday: meditate, contemplate, plan, deal with government agencies, and fulfill obligations. (All these will go better Thursday night and Friday, not before.) Your energy, charisma spring up Saturday – careful driving. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The accent continues on your domestic scene, on security, property, children, retirement, gardening, nature and nutrition. Luxuriate in laziness. Sunday/Monday are wise, gentle – contemplate the why’s, not the how’s. You might feel a tug-o-war between your ambitions and your home (or your tiredness) Tuesday/Wednesday. All’s well, whichever extreme you favour. Your hopes meet barriers Thursday daytime, but this night ad Friday could bring fulfillment, especially to home-related wishes. It’s a splendid time to decorate, landscape. Weariness returns Saturday – rest, plan. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
