Big changes on the horizon for South Delta BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The winds of change are coming through South Delta on many fronts. There’s no denying the combined substantial new additions on the horizon will drastically alter the face of the community. While construction continues on the $1-billion South Fraser Perimeter Road, to be completed in 2013, protestors who vowed to block the new highway project recently dismantled their camp because of the threat of an injunction. Meanwhile, the Tsawwassen First Nation is working on plans for major housing and commercial developments. A spokesperson with the public relations firm hired by the mega mall developers wouldn’t confirm which big box stores could come here. Port Metro Vancouver has begun a process that would see an entirely new three-berth container terminal at Roberts Bank, called Terminal 2, open for business in a few years. Council recently heard from a port authority delegation that came to address concerns, including geotechnical test drilling now underway. The officials at the council meeting admitted they could be doing a better job communicating. On a separate front, the government is exploring the possibility of establishing a foreign trade zone. It leaves South Delta as the prime candidate, which prompted MLA Vicki Huntington to raise concerns prime agricultural land will become an “industrial wasteland.”

While that’s going on, in Tsawwassen the Southlands debate recently entered a new phase. The owner, Century Group president Sean Hodgins, who originally pitched a 1,900-unit development, has been given the opportunity to come up with a new proposal by this summer for his 538-acre property. The new plan would be a proposal and not a formal development application, CAO George Harvie noted. Also in Tsawwassen, the marketing campaign has just kicked into high gear for the $400 million Tsawwassen Springs development, comprising 490 homes, a new golf course and other amenities. In Ladner, things are moving forward to redevelop the face of the waterfront area. Over 200 people attended an open house last month hosted by the Downtown Ladner Waterfront Redevelopment Advisory Committee, where several proposals, including allowing higher building heights, were discussed. Coun. Scott Hamilton, who chairs the committee, told the Optimist the next step is to bring what’s been pitched to the property owners to see if there’s enough incentive for them. “Their incentive is obvious, to be able to make money. If they can’t find a point where they can at least break even, they’re not going to throw any money at it,” he said. “We’ll still have to make that decision what we want to do. If they say if they put up three storeys (and) they’re going to lose money, but put up four and they’ll make money, and

they’re prepared to do this and that, for it, then we’ll have to have those discussions.” Delta council agreed to issue a request for proposals to redevelop the municipally-owned Seven Seas building on Chisholm Street as well as the adjacent property where the historic Brackman-Ker building was located before it collapsed last year. Hamilton noted those sites could be the key catalyst for waterfront redevelopment. Meantime, when it comes to the developments at the TFN, Harvie noted Delta wants to see the results of traffic study now being undertaken by the band. “We’re waiting and having preliminary meetings, CAO to CAO. We are very concerned with regards to the traffic volumes that would be affecting our exits and entrances on 52nd and 56th Street,” he told the Optimist. Harvie noted water is available to the TFN though Metro Vancouver’s infrastructure, but the question of sewage remains unanswered, since Delta’s sewer main has limited capacity. The time it’ll take to get environmental approvals and build a new sewage treatment plant at the TFN isn’t clear, added Harvie. As far as the latest on the South Fraser Perimeter Road, Harvie and Mayor Lois Jackson arranged a meeting Minister of Transportation Blair Lekstrom to talk about several concerns, including the plan to build intersections instead of interchanges on the highway. • For more on this story go to www.delta-optimist.com.

The winds of change are blowing through South Delta with several major projects underway or on the horizon. Port expansion and the South Fraser Perimeter Road (top left to right), as well as development at the Tsawwassen First Nation and the Southlands (middle left to right) are some of the major changes looming in South Delta. The marketing campaign for the Tsawwassen Springs golf resort development (bottom) is now underway.

Local artists come together to decorate new Little House BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

A local organization is a little bit closer to seeing its dream become a reality. Last month, Delta council approved the development variance permit for The Little House on 12th Avenue Society. The society is working hard to raise money to rebuild the little white

house on 12th Avenue in Tsawwassen. The house, which was destroyed by a fire in 2009, for 27 years served as a meeting place for 12-step recovery groups. Last year, the society launched a campaign to raise funds to build a new house on the site. However, to achieve its goal the group needs to raise a total of $250,000. Society president Jim

Stimson said that while the community has responded overwhelmingly with donations of both cash and inkind materials or services, there’s still about $95,000 left to raise. “Here’s a community that’s just responded,” Stimson said. As the funding and materials to make the new Little House a reality come together, a local interior

designer Karen Marchand has been working to bring a little artistic touch into the finished product. Marchand, who works mostly in retail and commercial design, has been on board with the project for several months lending a professional hand with the overall design of the project inside and out. However, as a painter and photographer, Marchand decided to cre-

ate an original piece of art to hang in the Little House once it’s complete. She has also enlisted several other local artists to do the same and she currently has 11 other local artists contributing original pieces — all with a West Coast theme. Marchand said she is still looking for pieces of other local artists would like to contribute something.

For more information, or to make a donation, call Jim Stimson at 778-887-1828. Donations can also be made through Delta’s parks, recreation and culture department. For information about contributing art to help decorate the house once it’s complete, contact Karen Marchand at 604-9489628 or reflectionsofyou@ dccnet.com.

Another summer with old concession Metro Vancouver’s new building at Centennial Beach won’t likely be completed until later this year BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Those planning to enjoy Centennial Beach will have to put up with the old wash-

room/concession building for another summer. Last year, Delta council approved the permits to allow Metro Vancouver to construct a new concession

building at another area of the beach. Preloading took place last fall, but not much has happened since then and the regional district only recent-

ly awarded a contract to construct the building, said municipal parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz. “They don’t even have a fixed schedule. I talked

to them a few days ago and they won’t be done the building until late this year. I suspect it will be early next year when they do the official opening,” Kuntz said. The original plan was to have the new building open for beachgoers this summer and to shut down the current dilapidated concession/washroom, which has drawn a lot of criticism in recent years. The old building is eventually to be demolished. The regional district had been planning to build a washroom/concession with a destination-style restaurant on top. However, after a couple of years, the district wasn’t able to find a suitable private partner for the restaurant and that plan had been shelved. Area parks manager Mitch Sokalski said in an interview last fall the new concession building, which will be located next to the expanded playground, will have change rooms and washrooms as well as a food concession with some inside seating.

Sokalski said it may be possible to add a restaurant some time down the road. The location and design of the new building was a controversial issue before the final location was approved, with many claiming it was too large or out of place. Centennial Beach Park is municipally-owned land that is leased to Metro Vancouver to manage as part of the Boundary Bay Regional Park. Council recently approved a new master plan for the beach park that contains a number of improvements, including paving the northern parking lot, a plaza adjacent to the playground, three picnic shelters along the north/ south pathway and removal of the northern backstop and infield to allow for less structured play. Some of the other improvements include enhancing the existing tennis court, leveling an area adjacent to the tennis court for bocce ball and developing a formal beach volleyball space.

Kerry-Lynne Findlay, the newly elected MP for Delta-Richmond East, wasn’t included in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s 39member cabinet last week. The rookie Conservative MP, who won by a wide margin in the May 2 federal election, didn’t get a cabinet post, although there had been some speculation in the media she could be in line for one. The federal cabinet sworn in this week has nine new faces.

Delta council recently agreed to continue the crop identification sign program to help promote agricultural awareness. Started in 2007, the program sees signs erected in fields to let passing motorists know what’s growing there. Delta will spend up to $10,000 on the program this year, but hopes to get some of that from the Delta Agricultural Society. Last year, 28 signs were posted. Mayor Lois Jackson and farmer Pete Guichon are shown here with a crop identification sign.

Officer gets February court date JESSICA KERR

The trial of the RCMP officer charged in the 2008 crash that killed a Tsawwassen man won’t go ahead until next year. Cpl. Benjamin “Monty” Robinson was schedule to appear in New Westminster Supreme Court Thursday to set a date for his obstruction of justice trial. The trial is set for eight

days starting on Feb. 13, 2012. After a preliminary inquiry last month, a Surrey Provincial Court judge found there is enough evidence to go to trial. Robinson was involved in the Oct. 25, 2008 crash that killed Orion Hutchinson. The 21-year-old died after the motorcycle he was driving collided with Robinson’s Jeep at the corner of 6th Avenue and Gilchrist Drive.

The RCMP officer was off-duty at the time. Robinson’s obstruction of justice charge stems from his actions after the crash. The officer left the scene of the collision, which occurred at about 10:30 p.m., and walked home. He returned 10 minutes later and advised police he had two beers at a party and two shots of vodka at home before returning to the scene.

SFPR changes concern Delta BY

JESSICA KERR

Delta is holding the province’s feet to the fire when it comes to South Fraser Perimeter Road. At a meeting last week, civic politicians voted to

register the municipality’s opposition to proposed changes to the project’s table of commitments. According to a staff report, last month Gateway wrote to the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) to request

an amendment to the table of commitments and to advise of amendments to the detailed project design for South Fraser Perimeter Road. The Corporation is concerned that Gateway is proposing to install culverts

Mike Brotherston, Delta’s manager of climate action and environment, told council that while the environmental impacts of culverts are not significantly different than bridges at the two locations, clear-span bridges are the best practices standard for Department of Fisheries and Oceans and B.C. Changes to the detailed design for the interchange has resulted in a change to the connection of Burns Drive to the Vancouver Landfill in order to accommodate additional HOV lanes on Highway 99. As a result of the design changes, 1.2 hectares of forest west of the landfill will need to be cleared. “Gateway will undertake mitigation works for both projects, including small

Delta seeking input on John Oliver Park plan

+,""'!- *$'(%)#.&

With Whitecaps deal dead, work on civic vision underway sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Changes are on the horizon for John Oliver Park in East Delta. The municipality has been working on its own master plan for the 20hectare (50-acre) park ever since a proposed partnership with the Vancouver Whitecaps to develop the site died over a year ago. “We have a draft plan, a fairly high level plan. We went back to the (parks and recreation) commission about a month ago and we’ve all agreed to a format to get the public’s response,” said parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz. Over the summer, display boards highlighting the plan will be available at civic facilities, including recreation centres. The plan identifies “improvement areas” with a mix of sporting activities and longer term opportunities to have community-wide, or perhaps even region-wide, activities, explained Kuntz. “They’re really focusing on both shorter term and longer term goals where in the short term it might be improvements to the sports fields, but the longer term would be to preserve a piece of that property for that one right opportunity that comes forward where it can be more of a year-round

facility,” he said. The municipality already acquired four smaller parcels adjacent to the park to increase the site’s footprint and allow for greater sports field development.

to Highway 91. Without knowing for sure what that improved access looks like, it could limit our ability to make better use of the park, but that’s one piece of the puzzle,” Kuntz said.

John Oliver Park sits at the junction of highways 10 and 91. Kuntz said passive recreation opportunities, including more trails, would also be part of the plan. A major factor in determining the new uses for the park is vehicular access. The parks and recreation commission was told earlier this year the Ministry of Transportation would not concur with an engineering department plan to improve the entrance to the park. “There was some push to try to get the access improved off of Highway 10, but we’re running into a roadblock with the ministry in terms of creating an access point that might be signalized so close

The Whitecaps had pitched a $31 million plan for John Oliver Park that included a clubhouse for national and professional players, a training facility and seven new fields, five of which would be used by the Whitecaps while only two were earmarked for community use. The two sides came to a tentative agreement, eventually signing a memorandum of understanding, and the Liberals pledged $17.5 million for the project during the 2009 election campaign. However, community access turned out to be an issue Delta and the Whitecaps couldn’t resolve.

New book by local author aims to help youngsters get to sleep BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Tsawwassen’s Trish Factor has written a kids book to help youngsters deal with nightmares. Goodnight Angels!, Factor’s first published book, tells a story about a child who has a team of angels who help him fall asleep. Factor, the administration manager at the Optimist, wrote the book in late 2008 to help her young son Nathaniel

to not be scared of the dark. “I dedicated it to him since he inspired this,” she says. The illustrated book is geared towards kids from 0 to 6. “The illustrator (Kent Nevins) did a fantastic job,” she says. “It’s just really neat to see it in print.” It didn’t take very long for her to write. “Basically I just sat down and the words flowed out.” Partial proceeds from the book will

go to Families of SMA Canada to help find a cure for spinal muscular atrophy. Factor chose to help the organization because friends of hers lost a child to the neuromuscular disease. Factor has two local book signings on Saturday. She’ll be at Black Bond Books in Ladner from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and then Albany Books in Tsawwassen from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The book is available at both those local retailers. For more information visit www.gooodnightangels.ca.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW There will always be doubters out there, but Victoria’s announcement last week that it’s establishing a civilianled office to investigate police conduct should be a big step in improving public confidence. A series of high profile incidents involving B.C. police officers in recent years has left a black mark on the men and women in blue, a stain that’s compounded when the public believes said officers aren’t held to account for their actions. The concern is that justice isn’t properly carried out when police officers investigate fellow police officers, that some unwritten code trumps the desire for truth. Given our judicial system is quick to give many people, not just cops, the benefit of the doubt, I don’t necessarily buy the argument, but I do feel the practice puts police in a no-win situation. Delta police chief Jim Cessford found himself in such a predicament recently when he was asked by his Vancouver counterpart to investigate two officers after a man was injured while being arrested in a case of mistaken identity. Cessford, who’s as honest as the day is long, concluded, after a lengthy investigation, the officers in question used reasonable force and that an abuse of authority allegation could not be substantiated. What the public saw, however, were two officers responsible for making an innocent guy look like he’d just gone 15 rounds with Apollo Creed getting away scot-free. It raised the rhetorical, and inevitable, question: What did you think would happen when cops investigate other cops? There was enough concern over the finding the province’s police complaints commissioner stepped in and ordered a public hearing into the matter. I don’t think the fallout was fair to Cessford, who undertook the probe in good faith, but it exemplified the quandary police in B.C. face when investigating one of their own. With the creation of the Independent Investigations Office last week, it looks like they have finally extricated themselves from that dilemma. With civilians soon to take over the probes of police conduct, although the scope of the office at this point is limited to incidents that result in death or serious harm, it will spare officers from the unwelcome task. That’s not to say there won’t be criticism the first time this civilian-led office decides not to pursue charges against a police officer, but at least those voicing the disapproval won’t be able to claim the fix was in.

Boomer demands leave next generation with bleak future DAN SOUTHARD

COMMUNITY COMMENT Sometimes I’m tempted to fill this space with nothing but happy and joyous words that couldn’t even offend those who have a pathological need to inappropriately lash out at anyone they disagree with. However, some issues are so important, they can’t be left unexamined. So, if you’re a left-leaning baby boomer who thinks the political and economic policies you’ve supported over your lifetime will benefit our children, get ready to be angered. Consider this: Baby boomers grew up in a time of great economic growth, when the overall tax burden of the average family was exponentially lower than it is today. It was a time when health care made up a relatively small percent of governments’ overall budgets,

and when five workers supported the government pension of one senior. It was also a time when the cost of a nice house was about equal to the average Canadian’s annual salary. As good as those times were, baby boomers felt the need to create a whole host of social programs for themselves. Now, let’s juxtapose the times the baby boomers enjoyed to the future our children face. Currently, we are passing along $40 billion in unfunded liabilities to our children. That’s $40 billion the government has promised in social security payments to baby boomers. Each one of our children will be supporting the pensions of three seniors. We will also be passing along a debt of $563 billion and growing, and that’s just the federal debt. Health care and education will gobble up the vast majority of provincial revenues. As well, our children will never have the benefit of buying a house for $20,000 then at retirement being able to sell it for $500,000. If we continue down the road we’re on, we are creating a bleak future for children. Their economic

prospects will be lower than that of their predecessors, yet they will be forced to hand over more money to the government and receive far fewer government services. They’ll be like the people trapped in the house in Night of the Living Dead. Rather than zombies, though, they’ll be stalked by aged baby boomers moaning: “More, more... give us more.” So, am I a bad guy for pointing out that our children can’t afford to make poor life choices, and that they can’t rely on government for their economic prosperity? Or, for pointing out that we need to do a better job of educating our children in economics? I mean, really. Does anyone believe that if young voters had a complete understanding of the economic future we’re creating, any of them would have cast a ballot for Jack Layton’s NDP? I’d say the answer to all the above is no. Perhaps if I was a properly orthodox Canadian, I’d pretend that the young people of today will be inheriting a country in which they’ll always be protected by the warm embrace of government. After all, in Canada, nice lies are far more popular than hard truths.

Majority’s voice not being heard

Editor: Re: Vision never sees light of day, May 6 Like Sue Lloyd, my faith in democracy is at a very low level right now. Unlike Lloyd, however, I am upset that at an alternative agricultural vision for the Southlands was tossed out the window at the Mayor’s Summit. I attended all of the Tsawwassen Area Plan forums/meetings over 20-plus months. I heard

either serious concern or strong opposition expressed regarding farmland being used for housing as well as concern over increased traffic and subsequent deterioration of quality of life that would result. Even though a majority of residents (over 60 per cent) through a professionally conducted survey said they support agriculture on the entire property and a majority said through written submissions they

support Delta’s proposed application to return the Southlands to the ALR, they were ignored. Instead, Mayor Lois Jackson and council shut down the recent public hearing because consensus could not be reached. In my dictionary, consensus is a majority of opinion. Since 50 per cent plus one equals a majority in this democratic society, what happened? Jean Wightman

Don’t confuse Westminster Avenue for highway Editor: Last year my daughter and I were struck by a car while in a crosswalk on Westminster Avenue. The driver was speeding and then not paying attention as she turned the corner into us. I underwent surgery and my daughter was required to be followed by a spe-

cialist at B.C. Children’s Hospital. Today as my son was crossing Westminster Avenue, a car narrowly missed him. The car was far away as he started to cross and within seconds was honking at him as he sped around him. Slow down! Westminster Avenue is not a highway. I

see the parents speeding to drive their kids to school, drivers speeding by in their work trucks and then workers speeding to get home after exiting Highway 99. I’m tired of having to wonder if the car is going to come to a complete stop as I cross the crosswalk. Don’t hit us, just slow down. Carrie Beisick

Getting back in the swing can prove tiring

Never-ending basket of range balls soon has golfers thinking of other pursuits, like that delicious dim sum BARBARA GUNN

LIVING MATTERS Golf is a game of decisions. With every shot, you need to decide which club to use. You need to decide how to stand and how to position your hands and where to aim the ball. But even before you get that far, you’re faced with a raft of decisions. Even when you’re practicing.

The golf mates and I were doing just that. At the range. It was early season, and our swings were decidedly rusty. We would find ourselves some practice stalls, we decided, and get back, well, in the swing. We were forced to make a decision before we even pulled out a club. “Range balls,” said the sign. “Thirty for $3. Sixty for $5.50, 120 for $10 and 180 for $15.50.” “Oh dear,” said one of the mates. “What do you guys think?”

Not a kennel, but an affordable, fun and exciting pet resort is now available at YVR (Vancouver International Airport). Your pet has their own fun time. It is an excellent location for a new 24 hour pet resort. Jet Pet Resort offers a growing selection of toys, blankets, beds, bedding, clothing, dishes, food, spa products and other keepsakes to help make your pet’s stay complete. They welcome you to visit their boutique often as they are always bringing in new products that are proven winners with the pets in their care. Jet Pet Resort is a pet-centered resort and spa, specially designed and built with your pet’s comfort, care and relaxation in mind. Featuring 15,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor amenities it offers your pet: • An 8,000 square foot interior pet and spa resort with dedicated facilities catering to pets of all shapes and sizes. • 7am to 11pm drop off and pick up (earlier or later times available, must pre pay and be scheduled, $15 per hour fee will apply). • A full team of pet care professionals on staff day and night, bringing your pet decades of experience, knowledge sensitivity and training in animal behaviour to serve your pet’s needs. • Sheepskin bed covers that wick away moisture and offer anti-bacterial protection to enhance you pet’s comfort and ensure superior hygiene.

Luxury Pet Suites

“I think 30 is not enough, but 60 is too many,” I said. “And 120?” wondered the other mate. “Way too many.” The 180-ball $15.50 package was also out of the question. That many balls would take, well, far too long, especially when we had a date with dim sum. The woman behind the counter looked at us, possibly wondering if we’d lost our minds. Or perhaps if we had any minds to begin with. Thirty-four balls, I figured, would have been per-

fect, or maybe 35, but those weren’t among the options. “If we get the 120 balls for $10,” asked the more assertive of my golf mates, “would be we allowed to split them?” “Yes,” said the woman behind the counter. “But would we each be able to have our own basket?” continued the golf mate. “I mean, we all want our own baskets. Are we allowed to do that?” “Yes,” said the woman behind the counter. That meant 40 balls per golfer.

• Infrared dog beds for older dogs and pets recovering from surgery or injuries, which promote healing and contribute to improved quality of rest and relaxation. • Relaxing lounges with plasma TVs and web cams that enable you to connect with your pet while you’re away. • Fully equipped pet spa offering a tranquil oasis for baths, shampoos, relaxing pet massages and special pet pampering. • Fully outfitted kitchen for preparation of special meals that cater to your pet’s special dietary needs and preferences. • Central indoor courtyard which features a man-made 20ft. tree, dog toys and customized play equipment. • A separate Kitty Wing with cat suites and a lounge complete with large plasma TV. From full spa services and dedicated cuddle times to delicious, healthy meals and snacks, indoor/outdoor play time and exercise fields, the pet care professional at Jet Pet Resort offer your pet a fun-filled vacation while you’re away. Because your pet deserves a vacation too! Do you know what to do if an emergency occured with your pet! Well Jet Pet Resort knows what to do and so can you. They offer Pet First Aid Training. the empty baskets — was everywhere. And then I imagined the dim sum: the sticky rice, the pork buns, the spring rolls and those darling shrimp dumplings. I lined up my five remaining balls and whacked them one after the other, without even paying the slightest attention to how I was standing, how I was positioning my hands or how I was aiming. There’s always a time for decisions in golf. But not when the stomach is rumbling.

Forty was too many!” “I hear you!” I said. “Thirty is too few, but 40 is way too many!” “Do you think it’s OK to leave some?” I wondered. “Do people always hit every ball in the basket?” We imagined they did. May 25, 2011 The Delta Optimist A17 Feedback

Delta is considering collecting garbage every other week. The idea is part of a new municipal solid waste reduction plan that will be presented to Delta council in the coming weeks. Council is looking

at ways to divert garbage from the landfill to meet certain targets established region-wide. The Optimist asked:

What do you think of reduced garbage pickup?

April Gagne You might end up with just more dumping of your garbage in different places or people putting it out and letting it build up for the week then having the raccoons get in it and tearing it open everywhere.

Carol McKee For myself, I’m entirely in favour, as long as it encourages recycling. I guess I’m concerned for young families that have more garbage.

Lorraine Campbell For us, we don’t have a lot of garbage so as far as filling the cans that would work very well for us. I just worry about the smell when the warm weather comes along.

You can have your say on this issue by taking part in our web poll at www. delta-optimist.com

Brian Kent I have a feeling it would just end up being the same amount of garbage picked up less often, but who knows.

Gladys Gibson It’s concerning with the hot weather.

Last week we asked you:

Will John Cummins make the Conservatives viable? • 42.86 per cent said yes, he will. • 4.76 per cent said only time will • 52.38 per cent said no, he won’t. tell.

South Delta’s Peggy Noel leads the pack en route to winning the senior girls 1500 metre steeplechase event at last week’s Fraser Valley Championships in Coquitlam. The Grade 11 standout also won the 1500 metre race and will be competing in both at next week’s B.C. Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships.

Big first period lead Pioneers to victory over Timberman and back to .500 mark

The Ladner Pioneers are poised to surge past the .500 mark with two of the worst teams in the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association on deck this week. The Pioneers will be looking to extend their win streak to three games with the 1-5 Chilliwack Mustangs visiting the Ladner Leisure Centre on Thursday. Ladner then travels to North Vancouver on Friday to face the 1-3 Indians.

After a shaky start to the season, the locals now sit at 2-2 thanks to a 14-8 home floor win over the Nanaimo Timbermen last week. The Pioneers blizted the Island visitors for nine goals in the opening period and never looked back. Quinn Waddington and Mike King led the first period surge with two goals each. Kevin Wilson, Cam Taylor, Scott Boyle, Derek Murrell and captain David Yee also scored

A pair of victories by standout distance runner Peggy Noel led the charge for the South Delta Sun Devils at last week’s Fraser Valley Track and Field Championships at Town Centre Stadium in Coquitlam. The Grade 11 student captured the senior girls 1,500 metre race in a time of 4:46.06. Noel also won the 1,500 metre steeplechase (5:23.48) and will be looking to approve upon her sixth place finish a year ago when she competes at the B.C. Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships — June 3-4 at the Swangard Stadium. Other highlights from the Valley meet included Hailea Caldwell placing sixth in the Grade 8 girls discus and qualifying for the provincials. Making this feat even more impressive is Caldwell had only begun throwing the discus two weeks earlier. Grade 9 student Mackenzie Connors produced a personal best performance, with a time of 9:49.36, to place fifth in the junior boys 3000 metre event. He followed it up with a solid run in the 1500, finishing in 14th place with a time of 4:41.42. Harrison Wade turned in a strong performance in the senior boys’ 800 metre race — not only qualifying for the final but placing seventh overall. The event was arguably the highlight of the meet, featuring two of the fastest at that distance in North America for their age — Fleetwood Park’s Keffri Neal and White Rock South Delta’s Hailea Caldwell qualifed for Christian’s Sean the provincials in the discus event. Keane. Neal went on to finish first in a Fraser Valley record time of 1:50.70. Harrison also enjoyed excellent runs in the 1500 (4:45.26) and 3000 (10:34.42) metre races. Also rising to the occasion against elite competition was Lauren Dewar placing seventh in the junior girls 400 metre race in a personal best time of 64.99 seconds. She also enjoyed a personal best in the 800. Competing against over 1100 athletes representing 80 schools from throughout the Fraser Valley can be a very intimidating experience for the younger Grade 8 and 9 athletes. It also brings stronger fields and the opportunity to achieve higher levels of performance. Georgia Wright and Jenna Palmer improved on their results from the Delta championships to set new personal records and gain valuable experience in the Grade 8 girls 1500 event. Wright managed to place 10th with a time of 5:34.94. Monika Bains also had a strong run in the Grade 8 girls 100 metre final. Not to be outdone, Jordan Baum improved his time by over 40 seconds in the junior boys 3000 metre event. Key to the success of all these athletes performances was the assistance of Mrs MacIntosh, who is invaluable as a coach and school liaison.

The championship run began with a late evening 3-0 win on Friday against the Chilliwack Mustangs. On Saturday afternoon, the Islanders defeated the tournament host — Kamloops Rattlers — 11-2 then, later that day dumped the Ridge Meadows Burrards 10-2 in a chippy, penalty filled game. Delta them moved a step closer to the gold medal with a dominating 11-0 win over the Rattlers in the semi-finals on Sunday morning. Up to that point in the tournament, the Islanders had led in each game and outscored the opponents in every period, except one. The championship game was against Chilliwack — in what was a probable preview for the upcoming provincials. It proved to be a low scoring and closely contested game. The Mustangs drew first blood and the Islanders suddenly found themselves behind for the first time the entire weekend. They did manage to equalize but Chilliwack used its quick transition game to take a 2-1 lead. The Islanders realized they had to play a hard checking game to keep the score close. On one play, Ryan Marquardt had to run down a Mustang breakaway and was able to keep his stick in front of his opponent’s face from behind while sprinting at full speed to prevent a clear shot on goal. The Islanders managed to earn a 3-2 lead, for the first time in the game, at the end of the second period. In the third, the Mustangs scored two breakaway goals, less than a minute apart, to take a 43 lead with under 13 minutes to play. Chilliwack

appeared to have all of the momentum at that point. The Delta parents in the stands were silent and nervous. Forty seconds later, they erupted when Presley Jang scored to even it up at 4-4. The two worthy teams battled back and forth; as overtime was becoming a possibility. With about three minutes left, team agitator Callum McDougall scored what proved to be the winning goal on a set-up from captain Brady Boyd, his fourth assist of the contest. The Mustangs enjoyed a power play with a minute to go, but the Islanders held on to win an entertaining and exciting Snake Bite championship game, 5-4. Every player scored at least two points during the tournament. The large number of assists on the scoresheet is a testament to good team play and passing. The Islanders were backstopped by the stellar goaltending of Zach Wickett, who earned two shutouts. The top goal scorer was Will McColl. The power play units, including Boston Smith, Kale Harris and Jordan Smith, were very effective in peppering opposing goalies with shots. The penalty killers, including Kurtis Thrasher, Austin Pearson, Brycen Jacobi and Thomas Locke, were hard hitting and tireless on defence. The team is also blessed with great speed and solid two way play by Jeff Richardson, Justin Poulin and Braeden Perfonic. Jayven Gill and Sean Phillips were unavailable for the ournament. The team is coached by Delta Lacrosse Association’s omnipresent Head Coach Trevor Smith.

The Vancouver Pacific Wave 12 and under team will be performing at the club’s Water Show on Saturday at Watermania in Richmond.

Pacific Wave hosting Water Show

What do Justin Bieber, Knox gelatine and nose clips have in common? Everything, if you are on the Vancouver Pacific Wave 12 and under synchronized swim team. The group will be performing their swimming routine to a Justin Bieber Fever mix at club’s Water Show on Saturday (7 p.m.) at Watermania in Richmond. Knox gelatine is a secret weapon of synchronized swimmers for keeping hair in place during routines as it does not dissolve in pool temperature water. Nose clips are a mandatory piece of equipment for athletes spend more time up-side down than right side up in the pool. “Synchro is the perfect mix of strength, agility and grace... not to mention the gorgeous suits,” said VPW coach Aly Plecash. “The suits are made for each athlete to reflect the theme of the music. “This year, our team’s suits are modelled after a turquoise hoodie - zipper and all!
