Cummins takes party’s reins Longtime federal politician acclaimed as leader of the provincial Conservatives BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Former Delta-Richmond East MP John Cummins has been acclaimed as leader of the B.C. Conservatives. Party members gathered in Surrey Saturday to make official what had widely been expected since Cummins announced he was leaving federal politics in March. Cummins, who had been working with the party in an advisory role even before he left the federal

Conservatives, adds a major name and level of credibility to a party that had been in the political wilderness for years. “A new era in B.C. politics begins today,” Cummins stated. “I am honoured to be elected leader of the new B.C. Conservatives. Together, we will build a real choice for the voters of this province. Instead of revolving door Liberal and NDP governments, where all that is replaced is a set of insiders getting rich, B.C. needs a real choice. We are

that choice.” When Cummins announced his bid for leadership of the B.C. Conservatives, he promised to change electoral law to ban financial contributions from unions and corporations to political parties. On the weekend he rolled out his first policy as leader to scrap the carbon tax. “When gas prices are high we pay more for food, clothing ... pretty much everything,” said Cummins. “The largest component of the

price of gas is taxes. In B.C. we have a special tax, one that no one else in North America has: a carbon tax.” The party noted Cummins would continue to tour the province, meeting with constituents to listen to their concerns. In a recent interview with the Optimist, Cummins said the party has been busily establishing constituency associations in all 85 ridings and expects to field a full slate of candidates in the next election.

Canucks keep pubs hopping Watering holes draw big crowds but other local businesses experience a dip in sales on game nights BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

As the Vancouver Canucks embark on the team’s first Stanley Cup final run in almost two decades, Canuck fever is proving to be a boom for some businesses and a bust for others. With Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final between the Canucks and Boston Bruins tonight, many pubs are gearing up for brisk business. Bob Irwin, general manager at The Landing Pub, said fans have been flocking to his Ladner Trunk Road establishment to take in games. “We got a really good turn out,” he said, adding that, thanks in part to jersey giveaways in recent years, more than half of his patrons come out donning Canuck colours. Irwin said he’s not sure what the 5 p.m. starts throughout the final series will mean for business but

Signs of Canuck fever can be spotted everywhere, even at Ladner Baptist Church. his staff is ready for anything. To entice fans into the pub, Irwin said he is offering food and drink specials during games and giveaways every time the

Canucks score. In Tsawwassen, Shelley Metrow, managing partner at the Rose and Crown, said the pub has also been hosting a crowd throughout the playoffs.

However, she said, business is still feeling the effects of the province’s new impaired driving sanctions. Metrow is also offering a few incentives to entice

TFN doesn’t back lawsuit Court filing hopes to halt construction of South Fraser Perimeter Road BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

The Tsawwassen First Nation isn’t involved in a lawsuit against the South Fraser Perimeter Road, according to a First Nation’s official. The TFN government took steps to publicly distance itself from the lawsuit filed last week by one of its members, Bertha Williams, who wants to halt construction, claiming it would disturb sacred burial sites. Williams and William Burnstick of the Cree Sioux First Nation filed the civil suit in Vancouver Supreme Court against the minister of transportation and infrastructure, the minister of environment and the minister of forests, lands and natural resource operations. They claim the new road would “go through a number of burial sites that are of spiritual and sacred significance.” They claim the government was well aware the highway project would have an impact on archeological and burial sites but took no steps to modify or redesign the plans. Archaeologists dig at the St. Mungo site in the early 1980s. Some of the artifacts found date back 8,000 years. Road has a site referred to as St. Mungo’s, which a government archeology and environmental assessment report stated contained human remains. TFN lands and natural resource manager Andrew Bak contacted the Delta Optimist to note his First Nation had a few concerns but they have been addressed. “It’s a tremendously large and complex site of great antiquity and we wanted to make sure we had a hand in mitigating any potential impacts on the site, and we’ve had some great cooperation from the province,” Bak said.

“We went one step further during our treaty negotiations to make sure that site would be given all the protection it’s entitled to under the existing provincial legislation by asking the province of B.C. to designate it as a provincial heritage site, and they’ve done that.” Bak noted the design of the highway is still subject to adjustment and over the course of the environmental assessment there had been numerous changes to the route to address heritage and archeological concerns. Beginning at the foot of the Alex Fraser Bridge and stretching roughly one kilo-

metre eastward, it’s one of the most important archaeological sites in Western Canada. The St. Mungo archeological area contains evidence of activity by indigenous people dating back about 8,000 years. St. Mungo and Glenrose canneries were erected on the site in the late 1800s. In the 1970s, archaeologists undertook the first detailed study of the Glenrose cannery area and determined it was one of the oldest locations occupied by humans in the Lower Mainland. A decade later, the St. Mungo cannery was torn down to make way for the Alex Fraser Bridge and a hurried archaeological dig was undertaken to excavate as much as possible before the concrete began to pour. The discoveries at that time were determined to be so important the location of the bridge supports were moved to protect the archaeological site. The TFN notes it continues to work with Gateway and the government on all aspects of the SFPR, including ongoing archaeological and environmental matters.

people into the pub during games, including food specials and playoff ticket giveaways. In fact, tonight she will be drawing for tickets to Game 5. “It’ll be great,” she said

of the final series, adding she’s a little sad to see the run come to an end. Others, however, are hoping for a short series. For those not interested in hockey, game nights are a great time to run errands. Across the Lower Mainland, businesses with no connection to hockey are seeing a dip in sales during Canuck games as grocery stores and others are veritable ghost towns after the puck drops. While she is hoping to see the Canucks hoist the Stanley Cup, Ladner Videoland owner Michele Davie is also hoping for a quick series. Ideally, she would like to see it end in four games. “We don’t even need to be open,” she said of game nights. Davie said it’s like this every time the Canucks make it to the playoffs and she has stopped trying to entice people with special deals. “Nothing brings them in,” she said.

New regulations ban evening sprinkling effective today

A ban on lawn sprinkling during summer evenings comes into effect today. The new regulations will help ensure Metro Vancouver can deliver a sufficient supply of water at the required pressure throughout the summer. “The demand for water soars during the hottest days of summer, in part because of all the water we’re pouring on lawns for aesthetic reasons,” Metro Vancouver water committee chair Tim Stevenson said. “This is especially true during the evening hours when demand peaks as residents prepare meals, shower after work and turn on the dishwasher.” Eliminating lawn sprinkling during those periods of very high use avoids difficult-to-manage peaks by spreading out demand. Limits on lawn sprinkling also serve to defer the high capital costs of expanding the water supply system unnecessarily. “Established lawns only need sprinkling for one hour a week, or less

if it rains. Why waste our world-class drinking water on grass that will green up again after it rains?” Stevenson said. Beginning this summer, lawn sprinkling will only be permitted in the morning. Even numbered addresses can sprinkle lawns Monday, Wednesday or Saturday between 4 and 9 a.m.; odd numbered addresses can sprinkle lawns on Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday during the same hours. Although there are opportunities to sprinkle lawns three times a week, the regional district is encouraging residents to water lawns only once a week, or not at all. “We need to deliver billions of litres of water to homes, businesses and farms throughout the summer,” Stevenson said. “We have to ensure the water pressure remains at proper levels throughout the water transmission system to fight fires and for other uses that are more important than lawns,” he said.

this fall, Huntington said she expects “sparks to start flying” as the new premier assumes the reins. Huntington, noting former premier Gordon Campbell rarely answered opposition questions but it remains to be seen if Clark will do the same, said there seems to be a sense of discontent in both Liberal and NDP caucuses. As far as the issues impacting her riding, Huntington said she’s eagerly waiting to see the results of a government commissioned study into the benefits of foreign trade zones. What such a zone in B.C. would look like and whether municipal rezoning and property taxes would apply are questions that still need to be answered, she said, noting South Delta would be a prime candidate, possibly at the expense of valuable agricultural land. “I don’t know enough about what foreign trade zones are, but what I do know is that in a modern foreign trade zone it’s usually a huge industrial park. It often involves foreign workers, and sometimes foreign workers only, so it’s not necessarily a job creation element for a local community... if it were put in the right area and if it were local workers, not foreign workers, it may be an economic driving force,” she said. “What my questions have been to the minister (of Transportation and Infrastructure Blair Lekstrom) is where are you looking at this? Are you looking at it in Delta and if

so, is it being looked at in the ALR? Because if it is, just move on minister, we’re not interested and we’ve got to find a proper location for it.” Huntington noted B.C. Rail has a huge land bank in South Delta, including exercising its right-of-way on the Guichon farm, while the Emerson Group has been optioning agricultural land as well. She said while it’s only speculation at this point, there appears to be long-term plans to industrialize large sections of farmland. “I think it’s just one of those things where Gateway proposes and the government accepts and we have no opportunity to refine the proposals or adjust them. The SFPR (South Fraser Perimeter Road) showed us that and I’ve seen no changes in that attitude.” Huntington also went over ongoing issues regarding the SFPR, in particular several key points where intersections are to be built instead of interchanges. On the ongoing issue of the lack of funding for dredging the Fraser River secondary channels, Huntington said she raised the point that the province owns the waterlot leases and as a landlord is ultimately responsible to the tenants. She said the government is looking into the issue and it appears some headway is being made. When asked if she’d consider joining one of the parties, Huntington answered she’s happy where she is and wouldn’t join with anyone unless her constituents were consulted.

Beware of scam artist HARRIS NURSERY & FLORIST tion with his victim, such as a building manager,” said Delta police spokesperson A/Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer. Once a connection is established, he shares a problem with them, usually that his car is broken down, and asks to borrow money. Once the person agrees, he then accompanies his victim to the bank and encourages them to withdraw a substantial amount of money to lend him, with the promise of repayment. “The Delta police department wants to warn citizens, especially seniors, to be alert to this type of fraud,” Eisenzimmer said,

adding bank employees should also be vigilant when dealing with senior customers who are accompanied by a man matching Rupert’s description. He is described as a Caucasian male, 5’6” tall and weighing 140 to 160 pounds. He has dirty blond/ grey hair with a receding hairline. He is usually clean-shaven with a ruddy complexion and hazel eyes. Anyone with information about Rupert is urged to call Delta police at 604946-4411 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www. solvecrime.ca.

One local youngster has spent the better part of his young life raising money to fight global poverty. On Sunday, Tsawwassen 10-year-old Adam Mawji and his family were among the crowd at the World Partnership Walk at Stanley Park. The annual walk is one of 10 that takes place in Canadian cities every year to benefit the Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC), a non-denominational charity with more than 30 years of experience in finding and sharing effective and lasting solutions to the challenges of global poverty. Mawji’s mother, Zahara Mawji, said she has been involved with fundraising for the organization and got her son in on the act at a young age. With her help, he started officially fund-

raising for the annual walk at the age of three. To date, Mawji has raised around $15,000 and he has no plans of slowing down. The Grade 4 Southpointe Academy student not only aims to raise money for

raised to assist communities in making improvements. For example, money from the foundation helped the village of Chongongwe in Kenya improve the road to Mombasa to make it easier to get their produce to market. At the same time, the villagers are experimenting with different varieties of crops and planting techniques to improve the quality and quantity of the produce. Zahara Mawji, who was born in Uganda and moved to Canada as a youth, said she has heard stories about the work of the AKFC from her parents, who attended Aga Khan schools in Africa. In an attempt to spread the word, Mawji has made presentations at school and to his religious class. He recently made a trip to his mother’s workplace and after a successful meeting with the executive vicepresident, he signed up a new sponsor.

Josette Jorge is hoping to spend 10 days in a foreign city armed with only her PC. The Tsawwassen actress, who now lives in Vancouver, is one of 10 finalists in a Microsoft Windows Canada contest called Do or Die. “I jumped at the opportunity for that sole reason, just because I haven’t done it and that it would be really cool to see how I survive. I’m pretty sure I’ll do well, though,” she said. Three of the 10 finalists, expected to be announced next Monday, will actually get to test their survival skills. “Now the final test is how well I can work my PC and how well I can interact with the online community,” said Jorge, who teaches acting at New Image College of Fine Arts. TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW It’s no longer just the domain of the feckless. For years, the idea of plunking yourself down on the couch because the game was on TV had decidedly negative connotations. Although I’ve always been of the mind there’s a certain nobility in supporting the home team regardless of where it might find itself in the standings, it was often reasoned this time could be better spent on a host of more productive pursuits, activities like mowing the lawn, washing the dishes or even helping the kid with his homework. If flaking out in front of the tube wasn’t considered a waste of time ... who am I kidding, of course it was looked upon that way by pretty much everyone who wasn’t also making some serious indentations on their seat of choice. Thanks to the Canucks’ impressive playoff run through the NHL’s Western Conference, a ride that has captured the imagination of a Stanley Cup-starved province, that, I’m happy to report, is no longer the case. Most people know exactly where they’ll be when the puck drops today at 5 p.m. to begin the final series against the Boston Bruins. And for those not willing to sell their first born for tickets, that means they’ll be in front of a TV, either at the local watering hole or in their own living room. The question isn’t whether you’re catching the game, it’s where you’ll be watching. When the Canucks are in the playoffs, it’s become completely permissible to let the lawn grow, the dishes pile up and the kid to fend for himself while you kick back and watch the home team go for that prized mug. It’s nice to no longer be characterized as some indolent armchair jock because you’ve just spent three hours in front of, and sometimes talking to, the TV. Now, courtesy of this ever-growing playoff bandwagon, logging that couch time actually gets you points as a loyal fan. This devotion is considered fashionable, an outward display of pride in your hometown team, one that’s on the verge of accomplishing something that’s never happened in this franchise’s often-sordid, four-decade history. So, for the next two weeks, I’ll join the army of Canucks fans and park my backside in front of the TV for what should be a magical ride. My only reservation is the final series, and this new-found respect for couch potatoes, can last no more than seven games. It seems a shame now that we’ve gained acceptance by the mainstream to throw it all away after just seven more games. Anyone for a best of 25?

Spring’s amazing renewal is taking sweet time this year DEBBIE McBRIDE

COMMUNITY COMMENT Spring ... spring, wherefore art thou spring? I hope the Bard will forgive my misquoting his romantic words to lament the lack of warming sunshine on my ever hopeful bones. There is no doubt this spring has been woefully short of those warm days that announce the arrival of my favourite season and I rue their absence. Spring brings with it choruses of songbirds that start the mornings with a cacaphony of melodies as they go about establishing their boundaries and raising their young. The sound of children’s laughter comes to us more often as they play outside, unrestricted by layers of clothes. Does the spring air

Broaden scope of land inventory economy. Food, housing, jobs and infrastructure all demand land, yet Metro restricts use of agricultural land. Infill must accommodate all but farming needs. In Tsawwassen, and possibly elsewhere, we reject infill. Should not the Metro committee focus on the best use of land, not just land for food production? A balanced use of land for food, houses and jobs might sug-

gest freeing less productive farmland for non-farm uses while utilizing thoughtfully located greenhouses to increase food production. Local governments and hearings are unlikely to achieve optimal regional land use as, like in Tsawwassen, they deem local needs trump regional needs. paper to explain the rationale behind leaving these tied bags of excrement on the trail. Do people leave them there as trail markers or excrement markers? Normally any kind of feces in nature quickly biodegrades as a result of microbial action and exposure to the elements. But what happens to feces enclosed in tied bags? If these little bags are biodegradable, how long does it take before their contents break down? I have not seen a scientific study to address this problem. Perhaps one of the reasons for Delta council’s desire to reduce the frequency of garbage collection is to allow more time for collection of little white bags. Some answers are clearly needed. How often do you participate? 3 times a week. How long have you been coming to Roaming Rascals? Since we moved to BC in March 2010. Why did you get involved with this activity? It’s a terrific place for my sons. They have an endless amount of energy and never get tired of things because there is always so much variety provided. What do you like best about this activity? It’s a safe place for them to explore, and for me to meet other moms. How does it benefit your life? When my older son is in school, this adds something special to my younger son’s routine. His older brother has school, and he has Roaming Rascals! What other things do you do to keep active? We visit the skate park for my older son, the pool, gymnastics, beach, parks – all great places for them. In addition to being a great place for moms and kids to play together, activities like Roaming Rascals are a wonderful way for children to learn to interact with their peers, and for moms to connect with each other. To keep your preschoolers involved this summer, check out the week long Kids Kamps. And, for those who have completed kindergarten, don’t forget Delta’s fabulous Summer Playground Daycamps! Weekly themes are planned to excite your children & capture the feeling of fun and adventure. Come play with us! Editor: Several recent letters to the editor have highlighted the problem of the failure to dispose of dog feces in public places. Unfortunately these complaints only address half the problem, namely to package the excrement or not to package. However, I have noticed during my walks through local parks an apparent increase in the number of little white bags (sometimes alternate colours) deposited along trails and in people’s gardens. These bags are usually tied, and are perhaps left there for somebody to pick up later? Now, I have not untied any of these bags and checked, but I presume most of them contain dog excrement. If that is the case, then perhaps one of the depositors could write to this

LIVING MATTERS I have many types of relationships. I have family relationships. I have friend relationships. I have neighbour relationships. And then I have elevator relationships. My elevator relationships, however, are unlike those that connect me to the family, the friends and the folks on the block. Let’s just say that my relationships with elevator people are rather, well, limited. Take the folks at work. My building has 12 storeys. All day long, the folks get on and off. We travel together constantly, oh, but only for 20 seconds or less — or a lot less long than it takes to get to Vegas. “Good morning,” I say every day to the very tall man with the thinning hair. “Nice weekend?” “Too short,” he usually

replies. “Well, have a nice day.” And that’s it. You could say the tall man with the thinning hair and I have a relationship of sorts, but I know precious little about him — except that he works on the second floor, and that he carries a man purse, and that he wears far too much cologne. Elevator relationships, let’s just say, do not lend themselves to insightful discussion. As much as I value the people with whom I have elevator relationships, I never feel it appropriate to ask them about the world’s weighty matters. Like Lindsay Lohan’s latest jail sentence, for instance. Instead, it tends to go like this: Me: (to the gal who always tends to look as though she’s applied her mascara without the aid of a mirror): “Good morning.” Gal: “Morning, yourself. Could you hit three, please?” Me: “Will do. Windy out there.” Gal: “Yeah. Well, have a nice day.” That’s the weird thing

about elevator relationships. Just when you want to ask a penetrating question, the doors open and the elevator person is gone. And yet you travel together daily. When it comes to your elevator friends — if you can call them friends — there are few things you know for certain. You tend to only know (1.) what floors they work on; (2.) what lunch spots they patronize; and (3.) whether they use deodorant on a regular basis. “Hi,” I said on a recent Monday to a youngish woman in heel highs. “What floor?” “Hit seven,” she said. “Man, what a weekend that was.” “Really,” I said, stepping off on floor No. 1. “Have a good day.” Would have loved to have asked about her weekend, but that’s not the way it went. And that, I guess, is the oddest thing about elevator acquaintances. You never know them really well. But you share all those ups and downs.

One minute. Once a week. One really clean pool.

A community service from the

Ladner can now boast that it has the best hardware store in the province. Ladner Village Hardware was recently awarded the 2011 Orion Award from the Building Supply Industry Association of B.C. for best hardware and retail building supply. The store was also a runner up for the same award last year. Each year, the association evaluates all its member stores using an independent mystery shopper. The stores have no idea who the mystery shopper is or when they will be visiting the store. The shopper evaluates each store on a long list of criteria covering everything from the store’s appearance, inside and out, to customer service and staff product knowledge. This year, Ladner Village Hardware scored a perfect 202 points, said owner

James Price, besting more than 60 other stores in the province. “We think that’s pretty cool,” he said. Price took over the store 10 years ago. He changed the name and had strived to give it an old time hardware store feel while staying up to date with new products in the home improvement and building supply market. The shelves are full with all manner of different items, bins are overflowing with nuts, bolts, nails and screws, and the aisles are manned by staff members who can answer a question and help solve a problem. Price is quick to shift the spotlight, saying the success of the store is not based on himself or his staff. “It’s based on the fact that South Delta shops locally,” he said. “We have a lot of local support.”

Grand opening celebrations Gymnastics centre and skate park officially open in Ladner<s civic precinct

A giant ribbon was cut last Saturday afternoon to officially open the Delta Sport Development Centre, the new home of the Delta Gymnastics Society. many others took part in the celebrations. The Corporation of Delta provided $1.25 million in funding for the Delta Sport Development Centre and an additional $500,000 for site development. Delta also received federal funding in the amount of $753,000. The Delta Gymnastics Society contributed $1.2 million to the project and continues to raise funds for

equipment and furnishings. The Delta Gymnastics Society had lobbied for a number of years to achieve this new facility in an effort to expand its reach to all communities in Delta and provide an improved facility for gymnasts. The Delta Sport Development Centre was built to the highest environmental standards and features geothermal power to

cool and heat the building. The large gymnasium features a glass enclosed viewing platform, community room, first aid space, staff room and change rooms. Jackson thanked a number of individuals and organizations that have contributed to the project and congratulated club co-ordinator Carlene Lewall, who recently received a B.C. Community Achievement

Award. The Delta Sport Development Centre displaced the former Ladner Skate Park. This necessitated the need to construct a new skate park in front of the centre. A skate park committee was formed with local skateboarders and parks planning staff to ensure the skate park design met the needs of boarders of all

ages and skill levels. Jackson said the two new recreation facilities are centrally located in the municipal precinct and are great additions to Delta’s parks and recreation infrastructure. She recognized Corporation of Delta staff for their hard work in ensuring the completion of these projects on time and on budget.

James, an SDSS grad who’s currently pursuing her masters at Yale University on a full scholarship, was one of six finalists chosen from 20 submitted entries to compete at the contest held at Alberta College. She also gets the chance to solo with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at a future date. “I am very excited about performing a concerto with the Edmonton Symphony. Dad hopes to pump up Sun Devils program Jim Noel would like nothing more than to see South Delta become a provincial powerhouse in track and field BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

Jim Noel has gone from being an interested parent on the sidelines to rolling up his sleeves and making a difference with the athletics program at South Delta secondary school. This weekend, Noel will culminate his third year overseeing the Tsawwassen school’s track and field program at the provincial championships at Swangard Stadium. He will have the duo role of proud coach and father — supporting and cheering on his daughter Peggy Noel, who will be a contender in the 1,500 metre run and 1,500 metre steeplechase events. Sure, having your child be a standout track athlete makes it easier to be involved but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s the reason behind Noel’s intentions. Peggy already has expertise coaching as member of the Ocean Athletics track club in South Surrey, under 1984 Olympic medalist Lynn Kanuka (Williams). Noel would just like to see SDSS have program the students want to be part of and that’s why he plans on sticking around, even after Peggy graduates next year. “There really are a lot of good track and field people living in this area who have competed at the provincial and national levels,” said Noel who also oversees the school’s cross-country team in the fall. “I would love to see us have a duel meet with Delta secondary early in the season and maybe some more kids will stick around and want to try track. The main thing is creating a fun environ-

ment where they want to keep coming back.” When the SDSS track was built in 1987 for the B.C. Summer Games, SDSS was the envy of most Lower Mainland schools, having such a venue on its campus. Despite the efforts of longtime teacher Olga Heather and track and field promoted at the elementary school level, the program never really flourished to the point where it attracted a large number of participants. Among the hurdles was the school having a limited number of student athletes and track and field going up against a number of other popular spring sports, including rugby and girls soccer. The lack of proper maintenance and upgrading, due to a limited school district budget, has taken its toll on the oval. Noel was excited to at least see the lanes repainted for the first time in recent years. “It’s actually not a bad track when it’s dry. The other thing I wish they would do is clean out the drains once in a while but maybe there is some hope yet,” Noel laughed. “When I first got there, Olga (was running the program) but was very busy doing other things as well. I approached (athletics director) Neil Jensen and put together a program. It’s impossible to be running a team on your own. Luckily some former students have come back to help out and that’s been huge.” Noel has previously coached soccer and hockey but is more comfortable in this role, given he was an accomplished distance runner himself, having competed

Still, there has been lots of learning on the fly. “This is a sport that I at least know well but there is some much diversity too, especially when you consider the throwing and jumping events. I have had to learn some of the basics of those events to pass

on to the kids.” A rep for Imperial Oil, Noel finds coaching can be a challenge himself with his work often taking him throughout B.C. and the Northwest Territories. Still, if he has it his way, the SDSS program will grow to the point where it will rival some of the powerhouse

schools in the Fraser Valley. “I look with envy at some of the other schools,” he added. “Walnut Grove had something like 80 kids at the Fraser Valleys while Panorama Ridge has gone from five a couple of years ago to 60. It would be great if we can one day get to that level.”

South Delta Sun Devils tennis team captured the Fraser Valley Championship en route to advancing to last weekend’s provincial tournament in Burnaby.

$630,000 Raised! Thank you, Superstars!

Devils 8th at tennis provincials The South Delta Sun Devils concluded an outstanding season on the tennis court with an eighth place finish at last weekend’s B.C. “AAA” Championships in Burnaby. The Sun Devils made their first appearance at the showcase event in recent memory thanks to a surprise win at the Fraser Valley Championships. They knocked off undefeated Terry Fox in the opening round and then defeated reigning B.C. champion Seaquam Seahawks in the final. The team was coached by Jays Pham and Karen Burns. The roster included: Erin

Krawchuk, Sydney Delaney, Laura Burns, Molly Gatt, Marin Davidson, Meaghan Matthews, Ayla van Agteren, Courtney Nicholls, Rory Long, Scott Bailey, Jack Matthws, Billy Chau, Adam Musil, Taylor Carkner, Enrique Ciurlizza and Matt

Sheppard. South Delta’s success would not have been possible without a close working relationship with the Tsawwassen Tennis Club which generously provided court time for practices and tournaments.

The locals faced teams from throughout the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island including: Fraser Valley Fusion, Victoria, Ridge Meadows, Surrey Storm, Richmond and Abbotsford. Highlighted results included a memorable battle with Abbotsford in the semifinals. With the game tied at 3-3, the international tiebreaker (runner starts the extra inning on second) was required to determine a winner. Abbotsford struck for a pair of runs in its half of the inning and the Heat answered with an RBI single from Taylor Woodward and a game triple by Jordan Britten-Young. Laura Baldry then capped the rally with

The championship game against Surrey ’97 Storm wasn’t as dramatic as the Heat came out swinging and built up an early 5-1 lead. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Tia Lore cleared them with a triple to end the game and secure an 8-1 victory. The team was solid all weekend and received fantastic pitching from Montana Monk, Sierra

Outstanding performances were also turned in by Stephanie Isaksson, Addison Leigh, Jessica Naples, Lauren Watson, Baldry and Lore. The Heat are coached by Steve Couper, Bill Sherritt, Ike Isaksson and Jillian Cronin.

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
