Ladner could become home to another artificial turf field, but it won’t be happening in the immediate future. Delta council agreed Monday to begin discussions with user groups to examine the feasibility of adding another synthetic turf playing surface somewhere in the community. Ladner currently has one such field at Holly Park, while Tsawwassen also has one and North Delta has two. Coun. Robert Campbell, who chairs Delta’s parks, recreation and culture commission, said it was a particularly wet winter that saw FILE PHOTO Ladner fields closed to play Delta is looking to add a fifth turf field to its twice as often as fields in inventory. the other two communities. Rotating strike hits Ladner
North Delta man was reported missing in mid-April BY

Delta police have identified the body that was found in the water earlier this month near the George Massey Tunnel as that of a North Delta man who was reported missing in April. Bhupinder Singh Rahelu,
41, was reported missing by his family at about 7:45 p.m. on April 16. He was last seen at 9:30 a.m. that day at his family home in the 8300-block of 118A Street. Early the next day, police found Rahelu’s vehicle in the 9200-block of River Road. The van was unoccu-
pied but contained some of his personal belongings. A/Sgt. Cal Traversy said the death does not appear to be suspicious. Ken Rosmus found the body June 1 while out in his boat with a friend on the south arm of the Fraser River. The pair pulled the body onto the boat.

The Ladner post office was one of the targets of rotating strikes by unionized Canada Post employees Tuesday. CUPW, representing 48,000 postal workers, has been staging 24-hour strikes since June 3. Contract negotiations had taken place for seven months prior without a resolution. The union is calling the current situation a “partial lockout” because its members’ hours were being cut. Canada Post says it has lost $70 million since the strike began.

Delta police called in the bomb squad yesterday morning after a suspicious package was found by the
pedestrian bridge on Arthur Drive in Ladner. Officers closed the road to all traffic while waiting for the RCMP explosive device unit to arrive and investigate the package.
Officers from the unit used a charge to detonate the package and could be seen sifting through what was left shortly after noon. For more, visit www. delta-optimist.com.

a contention echoed by Coun. Bruce McDonald, who noted that’s essentially how all other recreational projects in Delta get off the
ground. CAO George Harvie said Delta already has $7.5 million in the bank thanks to municipal land being
impacted by the South Fraser Perimeter Road, while another desirable civic property in Tilbury will hit the market later this year. “This would not affect the taxpayers. There would
be no new taxes in Delta,” explained Harvie. Sport user groups didn’t have to financially contribute to the Holly Park field when it opened six years ago, although a short-lived coalition of user groups
Canuck fever is everywhere as the playoffs continue and the team remains just one win away from taking the Stanley Cup. Studio West Dance in Ladner held its year-end recital over the weekend and a couple weeks ago owner and director Jyla Davis decided to choreograph the grand finale number, which includes all the students at the school, with a Canucks theme. Davis said the 10-minute number used lots of “hockey” songs, like We Will Rock You, the Hockey Night in Canada theme song and the national anthem. As well, some of the students dressed as referees, hockey players, the Green Men, Don Cherry and Ron McLean. “It was quite the production,” she said, adding she would normally take a month to teach the dance to all 200 to 300 students at the school. With Canuck fever running rampant in the Lower Mainland, the dance school’s performance has garnered media attention, including coverage on both Global TV and CBC.
originally planned to make a contribution. A new fee has been introduced to groups using turf fields in Delta, a cost that has trickled down to players. Coun. Ian Paton said he’d
prefer seeing another artificial turf field in Ladner but also in Tsawwassen as well. The Ladner turf field proposal is now in the hands of Delta’s parks, recreation and culture commission to pursue.

Work on rebuilding the Little House in Tsawwassen started over the weekend. It began at a ceremonial groundbreaking Friday afternoon and by Saturday work on the foundation began in earnest. Originally a family home, the little white house on 12th Avenue was purchased by the Corporation of Delta in 1979 where it served as a home for programs offered by Delta Mental Health and Richmond Alcohol and Drug Action Team. In May 1982, it was made available for 12-step meetings and in 2004 The Little House Society was established to oversee the facility. In 2009, the house was destroyed by fire and late last year the society launched a fundraising campaign to rebuild it. “You have changed many people’s lives by helping them deal with their addictions,” Mayor Lois Jackson said at the groundbreaking. Aside from rebuilding the house, the society is aiming at expanding its services. Community education about alcohol and drug abuse and addiction is a key part of the society’s goals and something it hopes to facilitate through the new house. The 1,800-square-foot facility will also be available to the community for
use as a multi-purpose space. “This facility that will be on this property is available to any group in the community,” Little House Society president Jim Stimson said Friday. “That’s the kind of commitment that this board is making to this community.” The society’s aim is to help everyone affected by an addiction, not just the addict. “It takes down not only the person with the illness but the family,” Stimson said. One local woman attested to that as she spoke to the crowd about her son’s addiction, the toll it’s taken on her family and the difficult road to recovery. “There were times when absolute despair took over,” she said. Stimson helped her son find his way to treatment, and she has found support through the Heart of a Mother workshops offered by the Little House Society earlier this year. The society’s fundraising work is not over. With more than $180,000 in in-kind donations of materials or labour and more in cash, there is still money left to be raised. For more information, or to make a donation, call Jim Stimson at 778-887-1828. Donations can also be made through Delta’s parks, recreation and culture department.

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington will be setting up her office at the KinVillage Recreation Centre in Tsawwassen on Wednesday, June 22. In an attempt to be more accessible to all of her constituents, Huntington is relocating her office to the seniors centre for the day. “There are no doubt many people who may have trouble coming to my Ladner office, so I thought it would be convenient for some if I came to them,”
says Huntington. The Tsawwassen “office” will be open from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. People are invited to drop in and have a private discussion with Huntington or, if they prefer a specific time, they can call 604-940-7924 for an appointment. “I believe this is really important and plan to continue the Tsawwassen ‘office’ on a regular basis,” said Huntington. KinVillage is at 543010th Ave.

New laser helps podiatrist deal with toenail fungus
It’s a common problem for many and a local podiatrist now has a new tool in the fight against toenail fungus. Dr. Thomas Troy introduced the PinPointe FootLaser to his Tsawwassen practice at the end of March after it was cleared by Health Canada earlier this year.
The laser is a fast, effective and drug-free way to deal with toenail fungus, he said. Toenail fungus is a common problem. Troy said about 10 per cent of the population has it, a rate that increases to 30 per cent at the age of 50. Keeping toenail fungus at bay is both an issue of aesthetics — it causes the nail to become thick and discoloured — and keeping a communicable disease from spreading. A fungal infection can lead to more serious health
issues for patients with diabetes or immune disorders. Aside from the aesthetics, a fungal infection can be disfiguring and painful. Until the advent of the laser, toenail fungal infections were usually treated with medication or topical ointments. The laser works by penetrating the nail, without causing further damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. The heat of the laser kills the fungus. Troy, who has PHOTO BY CHUNG CHOW been practicing in Dr. Thomas Troy shows the new the area since 1987, PinPointe FootLaser. said all 10 nails mean the end of toenail must be treated at fungus but, as with any once. treatment, for some the funThe nail won’t clear up gus could return. immediately. TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW When you look at young people today, it’s hard to feel too sorry for them, what with their flat stomachs, full heads of hair and effortless grasp of technology. They’ve got it so good they’re probably under the impression Vancouver has always had a fantastic hockey team. However, life is not all roses for these young folks. In fact, when it comes to real estate, there is ample reason for older generations to pity them. An email that came my way earlier this month from the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver paints a rather distressing picture if you’re a first-timer looking to break into the market. According to the board’s statistics for May, the typical South Delta home has increased in value by 138.4 per cent over the last 10 years to where it now sits at $727,723. Townhouses are up 185.6 per cent during that time, and now average a tidy $478,206, while apartments have risen by 132.4 per cent to a not so insignificant $369,350. These numbers are fantastic news for homeowners able to sit back and watch their equity grow, but they’re horrifying for young people not yet in the market. And every upward bump of these prices makes home ownership more and more elusive. The absolute cheapest home in these parts is in the half-million-dollar range, which equates to a mortgage payment pushing $3,000 a month. If you dare to dream about an average home, your monthly payment rises to the $4,000 range, which doesn’t include property taxes, utilities and all the other costs associated with a household. How many young people have aftertax incomes capable of handling those payments? Forget young people, how many people period could afford them? I realize it’s the reality of living in the shadow of a big, desirable city, but it’s a shame that real estate prices have altered not only our quality of life and communities, but our dreams as well. It wasn’t that long ago that buying a house was within the grasp of most people. Families moved to Delta to find a nice house on a nice lot in a pleasant, safe neighbourhood. Those homes and neighbourhoods still exist, but unfortunately they’re now out of reach of a great many, particularly the young families they were originally built to accommodate. According to a BMO housing report, the average priced home in Vancouver is now 11.2 times family income, more than double the ratio of a decade ago. It’s great if you’re already in the game, but I pity the young folks who aren’t.
Is there Hollywood ending to aspiring screenwriter’s tale? DAN SOUTHARD
COMMUNITY COMMENT Life can be very weird sometimes. As I write this, it’s Thursday, June 9 and I’m sitting in a hotel room in Southern California having just had a day of meetings with various Hollywood people. By the time this is published, I’ll be home, and darn grateful for it. I drove down here, something I’ve done on numerous occasions, but usually with more breaks along the way. While the distances can be grueling, it’s a nice drive. I particularly like the Shasta area in northern California, and always give a wave to the velvety aliens that live inside Mount Shasta when I pass by. Tomorrow, I’ll start the journey home, with a stop in Monterey to unwind for a couple of days. For
those planning a drive through California, I strongly suggest a visit to Monterey. When you’re there, take a drive around the bay to Phil’s Fish Market in Moss Landing ... best cioppino you’ll ever taste. Back to the purpose of my trip: Last year on a whim I entered a screenplay in a contest Francis Ford Coppola holds annually. Much to my surprise, when the results were announced in February, my screenplay had placed in the top 10. Since then my life has taken a turn for the, well, weird. I had been told to expect calls from agents and producers. I assumed this meant that maybe some small independent outfit might like my script, would want to toss me a couple of bucks, then have a real writer re-do it. Again, to my surprise, the opposite happened, and I was instead called upon by some prominent people in the industry to produce more screenplays, with bigger budgets and thus greater value. Since then I’ve completely re-written another script I did last year, and written two others as well. So, here I am in Hollywood with

people whom I can’t believe are willing to even give me the time of day, and listening to them talk about “my career.” Like I said, life can be weird sometimes. Still, nothing may come of all this. In fact, I keep expecting someone to shout, “April fools,” or say, “Oops, we got you mixed up with somebody else.” Nevertheless, it’s been an interesting experience, and I’ve learned a lot. Mainly, that Hollywood people are much nicer than we’ve all been led to believe. So, why am I telling you all this? Well, all too often people are afraid to go out on a limb and take chances, or try new things. Our society makes it too easy for people to succumb to their fears or adversity. I wrote recently that anyone can succeed if they only work hard and recognize opportunities when they appear. Strangely, those words actually angered some people. I guess some people believe that when the odds are stacked against you, your only option is to throw in the towel. Ignore these naysayers. No matter what your circumstances, you can beat the odds. Just give it a try.

June 15, 2011 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor
Editor: With all the negativity being expressed about politicians these days, I would like to relate a very positive experience I recently had with our MLA, Vicki Huntington. I work for a fledgling B.C. company that has developed a technology to improve the stability of certain configurations of heavy trucks and trailers. In seeking approval for the on-road use of this technol-
ogy, we were experiencing some difficulty navigating through the bureaucracy in Victoria that regulates such things. Understanding her concerns regarding heavy truck safety in South Delta, we approached Huntington for some advice and help with our issue. Over the course of two months, she proved to be very generous with her time for us; there were two meetings each lasting more than an
hour and at no time did we sense a lack of interest in our plight. Within a short time of the second meeting, the bureaucracy responded to our issue and has since approved our technology for use on B.C. roadways. Despite being an independent, Huntington has proved to be effective in serving her constituents while helping to improve highway safety. Eric Amlin
OWL visit is a real hoot
Editor: I recently had the pleasure of entertaining my out-of-town five-year-old grandson for the afternoon. He shows a lot of interest in birds, so I decided to take him to visit the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society’s centre in Ladner. I have lived in Tsawwassen for 30 years, and although very aware of the good work OWL does, had never taken the time to go there. What a wonderful after-
noon we had. We were escorted around by a very well informed volunteer who explained in detail what type of bird was in each cage, why they were at the centre, what they ate, etc. The hospital is out of bounds, but I learned that so far this year 153 raptors have been brought to the centre in need of care and
attention. On our departure, we viewed a very large peregrine falcon in the office, were able to sponsor an owl and, of course, buy a T-shirt. I encourage grandparents to do as I did. It was a pleasant, relaxing outing and my grandson still talks about what he saw. Anne Durie 05250803

Name: Mateo & Brian Age: 1 Occupation: Pilot and baby What is the activity? Parent & Tot Lessons Where and when does this happen? Mondays at the Ladner Leisure Centre. How often do you participate? Once week. How long have you been coming to lessons? Since October 2010. Why did you get involved with this activity? I really want him to be comfortable in the water when he grows up. It is also a lot of fun! What do you like best about this activity? It is a great thing to do with my son and it is nice to see him relaxed in the water. How does it benefit your life? Did you know that bringing your children to the pool frequently teaches them how to relax and have fun in a safe environment? Drop in anytime to an aquatic centre - the teach pools are always warm! Or, with the arrival of warmer weather, you can enjoy the summer sunshine at one of Delta’s outdoor pools. New Red Cross Preschool Programs start July 1st, 2011. SEMINAR & PRESENTATIONS. A GATHERING PLACE WHERE NON-TRADITIONAL HEALING PRACTISES ARE DISPLAYED.
At one time, it seems to me, coaches were people you found only on ice rinks and on baseball fields and in lacrosse boxes. Not so any more. Today there are “coaches” of every description. Need a career coach? They’re in abundance. A life coach? Them, too. Need a colour consultant? They’re everywhere, apparently, and more than willing to help homeowners break out from that beige, little world. There are, I have discovered, even “organizing professionals” — or coaches, for want of a better word. They’re the people who will come to your home, tell you what clothes you should turf, what you should keep and what items you should place in those handy-dandy stacking wicker baskets. And then hand you a bill.
Recently, I have learned there are also people called gardening coaches. I am not entirely sure what they do, but I suspect they come to your home, advise you what flowers to plant and then politely advise you to water them more than once a season. Brilliant, I say. This is all, well, news to me. I have never had a coach, but I am pretty sure I’d like one — or perhaps three or four. If I had my druthers — and enough money — I think I’d go for the life coach. That, I am guessing, would be the individual who pretty much covers all the bases. A life coach, I assume, would come into my private space and do a massive overhaul. He or she would probably have my happiness uppermost in mind, and tackle all of life’s great questions. Should I be a vegetarian, instead of a lover of ribs? A student of Chinese philosophy, perhaps? A quilter or a poker queen? The life coach, I expect,
would also cover the smaller things. He or she would determine whether I am spending too much on my laundry detergent and whether my shoes are sensible enough and whether I ought to wear more plum and less yellow. I do not know how people become life coaches, or coaches of any kind, but I imagine the training must be intensive. I am betting an organizing coach, for instance, probably goes to school for a good four or five years and takes a rigorous course load. One subject, I am betting: The ABCs of the Underwear Drawer. Another? No-brainer. That would be: Bookshelves — Getting the Spines in Order. At the moment, alas, I am afraid I am spending too much on ribs and laundry detergent and yellow clothing to be able to afford a coach of any kind. I envy people who can, however. The underwear drawer, let’s face it, is something in need of a pro.

“Getting out of the culde-sac” to help provide vital, fair income to people in developing countries is bringing Fair Trade Ten Thousand Villages “into the cul-de-sac” of St. David’s Anglican Church on Saturday. Bob Peters, chairman of the Father’s Day weekend fundraiser, members of last year’s craft fair committee and Olga Nickel of Ten Thousand Villages have been working together on a global-themed fair that will feature handcrafted products from around the world. The parish-sponsored sale offers the community an opportunity to invest in that world and shop fair trade with a non-profit organization linked with a program of the Mennonite Central Committee (a relief, service and peace agency). Fair trade changes lives and for many visitors on June 18, that begins with a cup of Fair Trade Coffee at St. David’s Kitchen Cafe. Home-baked bread, frozen fruit pies, as well as banana and other fruit loaves, will be offered for sale by St. David’s bakers, as well as light refreshments for that

This photo of Breanne Beal and her dad, Rick Beal, is full of memories. Two years ago on a trip to New York they went to a Yankees game, which was being played in their new stadium. Breanne says she loves to watch hockey, baseball, basketball and soccer with her dad. They go golfing every chance they get when the weather is good. Despite an embarrassing loss by the Yankees, Breanne says that day with her dad was probably one of her favourites.

Seven-year-old Adam Glockl says his dad, Andre, is awesome because he does cool stuff with him. Adam’s dad has taught him how to play golf and tennis, ride a bike and how to play poker. Adam says he loves him like the whole solar system and universe.
Ninety-one-year-old Doug McColl is surrounded by his girls: Maureen McColl (sitting), Karen Day (top left), Joanne Fee (middle) and Cheryl Streeter. Dad lives at Mountainview Manor extended care unit in Ladner and although he has had a stroke and one leg amputated, he still keeps his sense of humour and his love for his family.
Amanda Robinson says she has so many great photos of her dad, Stu Robinson, it was hard to pick just one. This one won because it is of him and her girls. Her dad and his wife left their amazing property in the Kootenays to be closer to their grandchildren. He told his wife, “How can we have a positive influence on them if we live so far away?” Amanda says she has always known she was lucky to have a great dad — kind, loving, attentive and supportive — and now her love and admiration just grows.

Dany Loyer says growing up with her dad, Ron Martens, was as challenging as it was rewarding. He was, and still is, very active and outdoorsy. Dany and her sister had the privilege of hiking the West Coast Trail, camping under the stars, canoeing and backpacking, all before entering junior high. When she was younger, Dany was sure her dad had wanted boys. She figured that could be the only reason he had her chopping firewood and digging holes in the yard. It wasn’t until she was much older she realized what she once thought to be a punishment was actually what made her into the strong — physically, mentally and emotionally — woman she is today.

Alex is almost two and is fascinated by everything his dad, Doug Schultz, does. Whether it’s watching a hockey game, pulling weeds, sleeping on the couch or playing outside, Alex watches closely. The photo shows Alex still struggling to talk and his actions and grunts are just so apparent as he attempts to figure out what dad is doing on the ground and how he can help.

Father’s Day Special This photo is of Nathan and his dad, Stephen Norcross, hanging out in the pumpkin patch. They looked all over for the perfect pumpkin before finding it. They got really mucky that day and had to wash off with the hose when they got home. Dad helped Nathan carve the pumpkin and then they roasted the pumpkin seeds for a snack.

Her love was for softball and he encouraged her to follow her dream of playing internationally one day. All his dedication helped her get there. The 15th season of the popular Ladner Village Market got underway Sunday as 150 vendors set up shop along three blocks of 48th Avenue. The market runs for a total of seven Sundays throughout the summer. Future market dates are: June 26, July 10 and 24, Aug. 14 and 28, and Sept. 11. Left: Wes Mackey provided some entertainment for the crowds. Bottom left: Although a cool, wet spring has not been kind to farmers, local produce was available. A26 The Delta Optimist June 15, 2011 Feedback
British Columbians will soon be receiving ballots in the mail for the province-wide referendum on the harmonized sales tax. Finance Minister Kevin Falcon previously announced that if B.C.ers vote to
keep the HST, the rate would be cut from 12 to 10 per cent by 2014. The HST took effect last year. The Optimist asked:
What do you think of a 10 per cent HST?
Paul Bach It’s better than 12 (per cent).
Darcey Walker I want the HST gone. Taking off two per cent doesn’t do it for me.
You can have your say on this issue by taking part in our web poll at www. delta-optimist.com
Stephanie Poulin I just think that it’s another way for the government to screw us. They’re trying to make it look good with those stupid commercials.
Robert Nowak It’s better than 12 (per cent).
Alex Jones I’d prefer 10 (per cent) over 12 (per cent).
Last week we asked you:
What do you think of reduced garbage pickup? • 20 per cent said sure, once evit once a week. • 20 per cent said do a trial run ery other week sounds fine. and see how it goes. • 60 per cent said no thanks, keep

Hosted by Ladner’s own Delta Music Makers Community Band, the two-day festival brought together 21 adult community bands from throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond. It has become the largest gathering of adult musicians in Western Canada. Left: The Maple Ridge Concert Band performs on the main stage. Sports Hall of Fame welcomes 8 inductees Former NFL kicker, rowing club co-founder and national champion senior lacrosse team are part of 2011 class Canada at the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta. Today, Murray is a Vancouver Police officer and has remained active in her hometown, having served on the Delta parks and recreation commission. Mitch Berger Football/Basketball A two-sport standout at North Delta secondary, Berger quarterbacked the Huskies to the provincial playoffs in his Grade 12 year and also was a huge presence on the basketball court. He earned MVP honours at the Fraser Valley Championships and was a first-team all-star at the B.C. “AAA” tournament as North Delta defeated Richmond High in the title game. Berger earned a fullride scholarship to the University of Colorado as a punter/place kicker. He was taken in the sixth round of the NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles and would go on to play professionally for 14 seasons, capped by a Super Bowl win in Pittsburgh in 2008. Team 2004 Ladner Pioneers Lacrosse One of the most difficult championships to win for Canada’s official summer sport is the President’s Cup for senior “B” lacrosse supremacy. The Pioneers looked to be in a huge hole when they dropped their first two games of the round-robin tournament. However, they stayed alive with a win over Newtown, then avenged an earlier loss to Barrie in the semi-finals. The turnaround was complete with a 6-3 win over the Kahnawake Mohawks in the championship game. It took about two hours on Saturday night to better understand the rich history of athletics in Delta and level of excellence this municipality is still producing. Delta Sports Hall of Fame’s impressive seventh annual Banquet of Champions at the Coast Hotel in Tsawwassen not only recognized athletic achievements past and present, but the valuable contributors away from the field who make it all possible in the first place. The Hall of Fame’s class of 2011 features eight inductees including arguably one of Delta’s greatest athletes of all-time. Mitch Berger not only spent 14 seasons as a kicker in the National Football League, he played a starring role for the last senior boys basketball team from this municipality to win a B.C. title — the 1990 North Delta Huskies. The sold out banquet, which included Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington, Mayor Lois Jackson and members of council, also heard an inspirational message from two-time Olympian Alexa Loo. Here’s a closer look at the 2011 Hall of Fame inductees. Friday’s paper will feature the Delta Sports Champions winners. Athletes Candice Murray Softball After a stellar career at the minor level which included winning four provincial titles with North Delta teams, Murray wasted little time in enjoying success at the collegiate level, earning all-star honours in her freshman season at Simon Fraser University. She would go on to be named NAIA Division One Player-of-the-Year and also become a fixture with the national team program. The standout infielder started for

It was a picture perfect weekend for the Delta Islanders tyke lacrosse team at the 2011 Galpin/Latimer Tournament in North Delta. The Islanders came through with a big effort, winning all four games. The undefeated run began with an impressive 11-0 against the Chilliwack Mustangs; a result that displayed a strong defensive team performance and a quick breakout game that led to goals by Silas Richmond, Cian Currivan, Euan Aitcheson, Lane Sharpe, Tristan Sambrook, Nathan Macpherson and Mathew Burt. The locals then played a tough team from Ridge Meadows in a game that featured excellent defense at both ends of the floor. The Islanders fell behind early 1-0 but regrouped to score late in the first to bring it to a 1-1 at the intermission. Stellar defensive performances by Payden

Purchase-Duch, Charlie Morrison, Ryan Hughes, Jacob Pearson, Dylan Maskell, and Ethan Chadd led to a four goal second period outburst that included tallies by Jayden Scott and Marek Gunn. An exciting tightly played yet scoreless third period secured a 4-1 Islanders win. Delta then faced its biggest test of the tournament against an excellent team from Surrey. The Islanders trailed 3-1 after one period before buckling down defensively and taking advantage of their opportunities. The end result was a tied game after two periods and the Isles going on to a hard fought 5-4 win. The ever-improving squad closed out weekend with an 8-1 victory over Ridge Meadows. Head coach Greg Rennie, and assistants Greg Sambrook and Todd Burt were very proud of the team’s hard work in each game.

SCLATER Alison Janet May 12th, 1938 - June 11, 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alison Sclater. Alison was born to Sidney and Eleanor Smith, May 12th, 1938 in Vancouver. Alison was recently predeceased by husband Elliot (Slate), April 3rd, 2011. She will be lovingly remembered by son Jamie (Charlotte), daughter Karen Kilpatrick (Mike), grandchildren Nolan and Payton Kilpatrick, sister Susan Mitchell (Brant), and many dear family and friends. Alison graduated from Lord Byng Secondary in 1956 and from the VGH School of Nursing in 1959, working in the maternity case room until 1969. Alison married Elliot in 1960 and lovingly raised her two children in their Tsawwassen Beach home. Over the years Alison found a passion for cooking, travelling, tennis, and PEO Chapter AS. Alison was an amazing woman who showed great love and delight for her family and friends and will always be remembered for her remarkable grace, dignity, and courage. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Irene Thomas Hospice for the loving care mum received this past month. A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, June 21st at 1:00pm at the Beach Grove Golf Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Delta Hospice Society.
George passed away June 8, 2011 at the age of 88 with his family at his side. In his youth, George was an accomplished athlete, coach, manager and promoter of sport in his then home-town, Kelowna. Throughout his life Dad also enjoyed the “Sport of Kings”, thoroughbred horse-racing. George spent 24 years with the Canadian National Telegraph as a Morse Operator in Kelowna, Vernon and Vancouver. His most enjoyable assignment of all was during the 40’s, transmitting live Vancouver Capilano baseball play-by-play from the press box of what is now Nat Bailey Stadium. In the summer of 1948, Dad married the love of his life Marguerite. Daughter Karen arrived in 1956, son Ken in 1957. Later in the 50’s, at the request of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, Dad assisted with the assembly of senior hockey players from across Canada, to be the first-ever Canadian hockey team invited to play in communist Russia. In the early 60’s, he co-owned and managed one of the first A&W franchises in Canada, in Trail, BC. From 1968 until his retirement in 1988, he operated the One Hour Martinizing dry-cleaning store in Tsawwassen. During this time, through community donations to the “Charity Barrel”, Dad dry-cleaned and laundered thousands of pounds of clothing, which he donated to numerous social service agencies throughout the lower mainland. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Marguerite, daughter Karen and her husband Barney, son Ken and his wife Sandy, two beloved granddaughters, Brooke and Courtney, and cherished nieces Maureen, Sylvia, Bessie, Kathleen, Susan and Diane and nephews Alwyn, David and Robert. The family wishes to thank the loving home support women who so ably met Dad’s daily needs for the last several years. Dad valued each of you for the friendships developed. Dad loved this little community of Tsawwassen which was his home for over 40 years. To all of the merchants and their employees who were so kind and helpful to Dad, especially in the last years while he cared for Mom at home, we are grateful. Your service and friendship to Dad were so important to his independence. Thank you all. No flowers or service by request. Donations may be made to the Delta Hospice Society or the Delta Hospital Foundation.
