Housing component cut in half Hodgins unveils new vision for the Southlands that includes 950 units and 80% of land going to Delta BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

The latest proposal for the contentious Southlands property contains far fewer houses and more green space than its predecessor. Century Group president Sean Hodgins presented his revamped vision for the Tsawwassen property to Delta council and the public Monday night. More than 150 people packed council chambers to see the presentation. The plan includes 950 housing units with 80 per cent of the land, more than 400 acres, transferred to Delta, including a large parcel of contiguous agricultural land and the significant forested area. “I wish it was more and I think the community would benefit from more housing,” Hodgins said, “but if less housing allows us to go forward, then I will make 950 units work.” In the latest vision for the property, both the density and the footprint of the proposed housing component have been downsized. A variety of housing types would accommodate both young families and those wishing to downsize, Hodgins said. The housing has also been moved to the east and west ends See SOUTHLANDS page 3

The fall out from last week’s riot continues. As Vancouverites clean up the mess and try to bolster the city’s image, many have turned their attention to identifying those involved in the mass destruction and looting.

A local company fired an employee who posted favourable comments about the riot online. Justin Reitz, who owns Rite Tech Construction, said he received 100 e-mails and 25 phone calls, many of them threatening, within two hours of the employee’s comments, which were originally made on Facebook, being posted on a website devoted

to outing rioters. Reitz said the comments were “completely inappropriate” and damaging to his business. At least one Delta Secondary student was identified on the website www.vancouverriot.com, which has since turned its focus to those who tried to help during and following the riot. The student, who was pictured

kicking a large window, apologized for his actions. Aside from facing possible charges, many of those who took part in the riot have been receiving punishments in other parts of their lives. On Monday, Vancouver police announced the creation of the Integrated Riot Investigation Team, which has launched a mas-

sive investigation into the riot. Delta police spokesperson A/ Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer said this week the department is working with VPD to determine if any Delta officers will be sent to help with the investigation. As of Monday, 117 people had been arrested in connection to the riot. - With files from the Province

Boat ends up on road after collision in Ladner PHOTO BY

DAVID ROBERTS

A collision between a small blue Toyota and an SUV towing a long trailer with a boat on it took place at Delta Street and 47A Avenue in Ladner at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The force of the impact caused the trailer to skew sideways and the large boat fell off. The collision caused extensive damage to the front of the Toyota, though the occupants were unhurt. The trailer of the SUV was twisted and the boat sustained damage to the stern area. No one was injured. Traffic was held up in the area for approximately 45 minutes until the vehicles were cleared.

West Nile monitoring focused here

Delta is one of three communities where Fraser Health is intensifying its mosquito trapping this summer BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Monitoring is once again getting underway for the West Nile virus and Delta is one of the areas being watched. Randy Heilbron, West Nile co-ordinator for the Fraser Health Authority, said the risk of the virus usually begins in early to mid-July. Mosquito pools are already being tested but the coverage areas have been scaled back. “We no longer have traps that are distributed across

Fraser Health region. Now we’ve decided to focus on what we call three sentinel communities and are intensifying our trapping in those communities,” he explained. “So Delta, Surrey and the Mission/Abbotsford corridor are where we are going to be focusing our mosquito trapping this year. If we get a hit, we will then expand to areas that we presently aren’t trapping.” A Delta civic report last year noted the largest and most prolific sources of recurrent mosquito activ-

ity in the municipality are several tidal-influenced salt marshes. Burns Bog isn’t a viable mosquito habitat due to the acidic nature of the water. There had been a number of cases of B.C. residents contracting the illness over the last decade, but they did so elsewhere. Although the virus had been expected to make an appearance in B.C. for several years, for reasons still not clear it didn’t happen until 2009 when the first indigenous human case of the virus was confirmed in Kelowna.

SOUTHLANDS from page 1 of the property, with homes abutting Boundary Bay to the east and 56th Street to the west. Hodgins originally pitched a plan that included 1,900 housing units in a high-density development. Forty-two per cent of the land would have been given to Delta for small-scale farming. Land would have also been set aside for green space and a post-secondary campus. The proposal, which followed the concepts of new urbanism and agricultural urbanism, was years in the making. Hodgins submitted an official community plan amendment application two years ago for the property, zoned agricultural but no longer in the Agricultural Land Reserve, but not a specific development application. Council, however, would return his applica-

tion without considering it, citing the Tsawwassen Area Plan still needed to be updated. In a surprise move this year, council agreed with a recommendation to request the property be placed back in the ALR. A public hearing was required before the request could be sent to the Agricultural Land Commission, but after three nights it was terminated when it was evident the recommendation was a divisive one. Those who supported Hodgins complained at the hearing that he never got a fair chance with his proposal. Mayor Lois Jackson then organized a summit that resulted in Hodgins getting the green light to come back with a new proposal by July 1. Hodgins described the summit as “sober second thought” that allowed some

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control confirmed a mosquito pool sample collected from the south Okanagan tested positive for the virus. Also in 2009, a horse in the Aldergrove area tested positive, but that has been the only confirmed case of infection so far in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley regions. As far as why there haven’t been any reported cases of people becoming infected in the Lower Mainland, Heilbron noted the climate and geography

might have something to do with it. “When you look at British Columbia versus Alberta and Washington state and some of the others areas, especially where they’ve had activity, the climate and geography are completely different. We are mountainous with a lush ecosystem,” he said. “Where you look at Washington state, the activity has been in the low-lying areas with hot temperatures. As we’ve predicted, the Osoyoos and Okanagan area is where it has shown up in

British Columbia.” Heilbron said just because this area has been spared, it doesn’t mean the virus won’t start appearing and flourishing in the Lower Mainland. Most people who become infected with the West Nile virus through mosquito bites don’t experience any symptoms. Approximately 20 per cent will experience mild to severe flu-like symptoms, in most cases lasting three to six days. Some, though, are very ill for several weeks.

The City of Vancouver is going to spend major dollars improving the gas collection system at the Vancouver Landfill in East Ladner. “Over time the amount of landfill gas being generated at the landfill has increased and over the last few years, because we haven’t been as aggressive as we should have been around installing landfill gas infrastructure, the actual amount we’ve collected from 2005 has gradually decreased,” Paul Henderson, Vancouver’s director of strategic initiatives, told Delta council last week. Having better gas collection efficiency was discussed during an update council received on what’s planned for the Vancouver Landfill. That plan followed the establishment of a joint technical committee earlier this year to deal with concerns. In February, council learned the landfill’s gas collection system was working well below provincial standards. The system is supposed to help control odours and reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. Provincial regulations

state the landfill gas collection system must be at least 75 per cent efficiency to control odour and emissions. In 2009, it was working at 44 per cent; in 2010, it had improved to 52 per cent. In addition to not having adequate gas collection wells, an insufficient amount of soil cover was used on a closed section of the landfill. A temporary soil cap placed on another section still receiving waste but slated for closure has been determined not to be effective. Henderson told Delta politicians that Vancouver has approved the expenditure of $4.7 million for closure and gas collection projects, including the installation of new vertical gas wells this year. A further $20 million will be spent in 2012 as part of the closure plan. Vancouver is targeting a gas collection efficiency rate of 75 per cent by the end of 2012. A report to Delta council notes Vancouver, which owns and operates the landfill, is also reviewing the existing landfill plan to ensure phases are small enough to allow regular closure, with the goal of closure occurring every one or two years, compared to every three or four years.

Delta’s heritage advisory commission wants a Ladner heritage home preserved. The commission recently discussed a demolition application for the Gazely Residence, located at 5188 Central Ave. The owner has applied for a two-lot subdivision of the property, but the commission has recommended the home be retained on one of the lots. According to staff, the home is one of the last original Delta Manor homes and is structurally representative of the 1927 era. Its prominent corner location establishes it as a neighbourhood anchor and should be recognized and valued for its defining heritage character, noted commission members. Should Delta council approve a demolition permit, the commission suggested signage be placed on the property to ensure public awareness that the building can be purchased for $1 and moved to another location.

Ladner is the latest addition as Fatburger continues to expand Trenant Park Square restaurant offers premium, custom made burgers Fatburger opened its doors to Ladner diners last week. The chain, which got started in Los Angeles in 1952, is billed as the “last great hamburger stand.” “Since we introduced Fatburger to Canada back in 2005, Fatburger has

certainly carved out its niche,” said Frank Di Benedetto, the Fatburger franchisor for Canada and CEO of Frankie’s Burger Enterprises and the Ricky’s All Day Grill chain. “There’s definitely a market for a premium burger operator who uses very high quality beef and only cooks burgers custom made to order.” He said South Delta is a unique market area and that Trenant Park Square is a great location for the new restaurant.

The new Fatburger is located beside Ricky’s All Day Grill at Trenant Park in Ladner. The signature Fatburger is made with fresh AAA Canadian Alberta beef and can be dressed with all the usual condiments, plus choices such as chili, bacon, mushrooms, guaca-

mole, jalapeños, an assortment of cheeses and even a fried egg. Larger options include a one-half-pound Kingburger, a three-quarter-pound Double Fatburger, a

Triple Kingburger and a Kingburger Supreme. Fatburger also offers milkshakes, turkey burgers, veggie burgers and an assortment of chicken entrees.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW Is there such a thing as impartial information when it comes to the HST? I was pondering that question after concerns were raised in several corners last week following the arrival of the HST Referendum Voters Guide in the mail. There’s absolutely no doubt the Liberal government could have been more up front with voters on who compiled the guide, leaving many to assume it was non-partisan Elections B.C. that was providing the information. In reality, it was the far less impartial Ministry of Finance. So while the Liberals take heat for yet another misstep on the controversial tax, I’m not so sure the guide’s contents are too far off the mark or, should it have compiled the brochure, whether Elections B.C. would have done things a whole lot differently. It can provide the nuts and bolts of the referendum, including the balloting process, who’s eligible to vote and even the question that will be posed to voters, but with an issue as complex and contentious as the HST, it would be hard for any entity, even one as trusted and impartial as Elections B.C., to find some middle ground. I guess it could have provided contrasting viewpoints — one analysis singing its praises and the other contending the exact opposite — which is precisely what the guide offered. The problem I see is there isn’t a lot of definitive information about the tax at this point, with so much of the debate centering on whether its impacts will be beneficial for individuals and/or the economy. With far more supposition than tangible proof, this referendum looks a lot like a traditional election campaign where both sides frame the debate to suit their own purposes. I had to laugh when I saw a press release on the results of a recent Angus Reid poll that asked British Columbians which sources of HST information they trust. Only one of the seven options (small business) even hit the 50 per cent mark, which shows the level of distrust among voters when it comes to the tax. What’s more, it doesn’t matter which end of the political spectrum you’re talking about as British Columbians were as dubious about the information coming from Premier Christy Clark (40 per cent) and Finance Minister Kevin Falcon (33) as they were from NDP leader Adrian Dix (35) and big unions (28). Ironically, I thought one line from the embattled voters guide summed it up nicely: “It’s been hard to find an independent, unbiased analysis to help with your important decision in this referendum.”

Armpit reference troubling, but industrial signs are all around DEBBIE McBRIDE

COMMUNITY COMMENT How do you feel when you hear Delta being referred to as the industrial armpit of the Fraser Valley? I know how outraged I was hearing this term being used by those who know and understand what the industrial plans are for this area. How is it possible that an area home to the best farmland in Canada, is on the Fraser River estuary and a vital part of the Pacific Flyway could ever become a superport, covered by warehouses, containers, railyards and highways? Isn’t this land in the Agricultural Land Reserve and protected for our food production? Well, yes, it is, but it is still being bought up and optioned by those like the Emerson Group, which merely sees the ALR designation of the land as a temporary condition.

Former premier Mike Harcourt has been quoted as admitting that when he was on the board of the Vancouver Port Authority Delta was viewed as the natural place for the expansion of the port, moving it away from Vancouver, and the new home for industry. It seems, however, the implementation of the ALR threw a wrench into those plans and it has taken the last two decades to put that original plan into play. Should we be shocked? Not when you realize the South Fraser Perimeter Road is a plan that is over 20 years old. This road was sold as a quick way for trucks to move through Metro Vancouver and on to Highway 1. It was pushed through in spite of viable and cheaper alternatives and despite the loss of farmland, irreplaceable communities like historic Annieville and First Nation archeological sites. The actual reason for the the new highway, we are now recognizing, is the industrialization of Delta. The Tsawwassen First Nation treaty facilitated the removal of incredibly productive farmland from the ALR that had been expropriated from farming families

for port use. With the stroke of a pen, the government deftly got the industrial land it wanted. Delta has been complicit as it has stood by and allowed more and more land to be rezoned industrial. We are supposed to be placated by money given to mitigate the loss of farmland and threats to Burns Bog and accept platitudes there was nothing it could do. There’s lots of lip service being paid by Mayor Lois Jackson about the importance of agricultural land, yet when the Delta Optimist and Global TV reported on possible plans to implement a foreign trade zone in Delta and the flipping of ALR land by B.C. Rail and those close to the provincial government, nary a whimper was heard from Jackson or members of Delta council. There has been condemnation from MLAs Vicki Huntignton and Guy Gentner and organizations worldwide, yet instead of roars of outrage on Delta’s behalf, there has been silence from municipal hall. Unacceptable. Learn more by attending a Council of Canadians meeting at the Ladner Pioneer Library at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29 or log on to The Canadian.org.

June 22, 2011 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor

Editor: I was rudely awoken late last Wednesday night after the Canucks’ loss to learn that my son and two of his friends had been stabbed by some unknown loser downtown. Half asleep and in a state of worry, I hustled into my clothes and drove to Kitsilano where I parked the car and walked to St. Paul’s Hospital over the Burrard Street Bridge. (The bridge had been closed to all vehicular traffic.) As I walked north on the bridge, and was the only person heading into the battle zone, not out, I

passed by many inebriated youth leaving downtown. What struck me as really disturbing was the cavalier, almost joyful, attitude they displayed in their conversation. Comments like, “Yah, and then the guy got punched in the face before he fell into the window, ha ha,” and, “It was great! I’ve never seen such s**t going down! People were really getting f****d up!” I made my way to the hospital without being attacked and found my son in emergency with a fourinch long knife wound to his abdomen. Fortunately,

the knife did not penetrate his organs and he will recover, his friends as well. But will Vancouver ever recover? Or more to the point, will our youth ever get back on the right track? Certainly there were some very bad apples who set out to stir it up as much as they could, but what about the thousands of other participants, teens and young 20-somethings who yelled encouragement, who cheered and took pictures, who by not obeying orders to leave the area impeded police, fire and ambulance services ability to do their jobs? Are they not really

guilty by association? My son and his friends were assaulted as they tried to intervene when they saw thugs beating up on younger kids. Getting stabbed is not a just outcome for their attempt to help. What will be justice is when anyone who took part in the mayhem Wednesday night gets the book thrown at them and faces the consequences of their careless, and in some cases, evil actions. Parents, do you know where your kids are tonight? Do you care? Did you ever care? Ray Higgs

Gov’t didn’t hide fact it was behind the HST voters guide

Editor: Re: MLA takes gov’t to task over biased HST guide, MLA’s Report, June 17, and Much to question as Victoria gets crafty in bid to sell HST, Community Comment, June 17 For the sake of our province’s future, I hope Delta voters pay more care and attention to the governmentissued voters guide than their MLA and their local

columnist. In news releases and multiple public statements, the government clearly announced it would prepare, pay for and distribute a voters guide on the harmonized sales tax referendum. These public statements apparently were missed. The guide — clearly emblazoned with the official government logo on the front cover — contains

Amateur radio operators to show off skills during weekend exercise Members of the Delta Amateur Radio Society will join thousands of amateur radio operators from across North America to show off their emergency capabilities this weekend. Amateur radio operators are ready to provide critical communications during emergencies. Recently, operators helped out during the Slave Lake fires. When trouble is brewing, amateur radio operators are often the first to provide rescuers with critical infor-

mation and communications. This weekend the public is invited to meet and talk with members of the Delta Amateur Radio Society and see what amateur radio service is all about. The Delta Amateur Radio Society will be located at the old Vancouver Wireless Heritage site on 72nd Street across from the Boundary Bay Airport. The best times are after 11 a.m. on Saturday and until 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Co-workers get kicks by jumping from planes, not shopping for socks

LIVING MATTERS Tis about to be the season for patios. And lemonade. And hammocks. And, for some, skydiving. Some people, it has come to my attention, are applauding the return of the good weather because of the latter. The good weather presents them with the opportunity to do something I would never consider: leaping from planes. I recently discovered I happen to be surrounded by people who jump out of planes — and actually pay to do it. I was at work, and the discussion had turned to the weekend. “Going skydiving Saturday,” one colleague reported. “It’ll be my fifth time.” “Done it seven times,” said another. “Nine for me,” said a

Mention the word to my colleagues — or, at least, these particular colleagues — and they’d be imagining something else: the riveting, mind-blowing (and highly expensive) near-death experience. “So,” asked one, looking at me. “What’s on your plate this weekend?”

third. “How many for you?” He was looking at me. “Uh, zero,” I said. You learn things about your colleagues when you stand around the water cooler, but this was something I’d never expected. My colleagues, after all, are pretty normal people. And normal people, as far as I’m concerned, use airplanes as a means of travelling from point A to point B — as in, from airport to airport, or from check-in counter to baggage carousel. The colleagues sipped from their paper cups in silence and looked at me as if I had the word WIMP written on my forehead. Perhaps I am gutless. After all, when I get on a plane and it takes off into the sky, I prefer the doors and windows remain closed. I prefer to be accompanied, not by a parachute, but by a good book, a moderately challenging crossword puzzle and a little glass of Chardonnay. “Do you, um, actually enjoy this?” I asked the colleagues.

Lots of love for Ladner

The Optimist took the question, “What do you love most about Ladner?”, out to cyberspace, posing the query on the Optimist and Ladners Landing Facebook pages. HereDs what people had to say: “I love the sense of community here, and how word of mouth is so incredibly effective. When we like something, we let others in our community know, and they listen. That kind of community trust isn’t always easy to build.” - Robyn Thomson “Proud to be a third generation Ladnerite. It’s an undying love and genetically inherent.” - Carol Mowat-Haklander “I love Ladner’s lazy atmosphere, kind people, beautiful views, laid back attitudes, and bbqs on the river.” - Meaghan Ralston “We have an amazing Leisure Centre!” - Karen Pattullo Shumka “I love how safe it is! Love the people and how small Ladner is and even though the size is small there is still a lot to do.” - Tayler Brown “I think what I love most about Ladner is the community, and the people.” - Pat Irvine “Proud to be a ‘Ladnerite’, I love this community and the people who call it home. Great schools, awesome sports, great restaurants, and the best place to raise a family! Fishing, farming, boating and

BBQing, these are all just a few reasons we choose to live in the best town in B.C.!” - Cathie Greene Goodman “Although I have not lived in Ladner for many years, I often share my best memories with my children about life in Ladner. From its beautiful sunsets, to the smell of the ocean and laid back living. Spring was my favourite time — seeing all the blossoms on the trees and the pretty daffodils everywhere! Life was good there for me and I often dream of living there again one day. Still miss it!!!” - Michelle Voyageur “I love the small community feel, and how it is a 2 min drive to the grocery store and all the big box stores are located in other close by municipalities if I need them. I love our weather (and bragging about it to those who live in other ... rainier ‘burbs), and how that contributes to people spending lots of time outdoors. I see way more people walking, jogging, cycling, rollerblading here than I did when I lived in Coquitlam.” - Linda Chamaschuk “Ladner is a community that loves kids! I grew up in a community where kids were suspect — possibly aliens — so the fact that Ladner folks embrace kids and all their games and noise means a lot to me.” - Alison Acheson

“I have lived here for the past 19 years. When ever I’m out anywhere else soon as I cross that tunnel I feel safe that I’m home. I love my neighbours, I love the feel of a small town. I like that fact that most people say ‘Where’s Ladner?’ and I’m proud to call Ladner my home.” - Kashmir Dhaliwal

But everywhere you go there is a friend, or you can start a conversation with a stranger in the grocery aisle and chat about an old family recipe and you know you will get an e-mail when you get home to exchange those recipes. People just seem to care, they look beyond their universe, beyond their own motivations and needs. They coach your kids. They grow your food. They catch your fish. They let you in when traffic is nuts. they start conversations in line-ups. Ahhh Ladner!” - Sidnee Williams

“Coming through the tunnel and knowing you’re home and knowing there’s no better place than the uniqueness of Ladner.” - Ginger Thauli Dhamrait

“I moved to Ladner in ‘95 and I have a grateful sense of being let in on a special secret. There is a cohesiveness to this community, a collective reverence for the beautiful natural surroundings and a palpable respectfulness of one another. My family may have to move soon but this town will always hold a place in my heart.” - Charlene Davies

also known as Jiggle Machine! How it works:

A vibration platform is a resistance machine providing an outcome similar to ‘working out’ with free weights. The vibration platform forces your body to have involuntary muscle contractions and depending on the speed and frequency chosen, you can have thousands of muscle contractions per minute. This muscle activity burns calories and stimulates blood and oxygen flow through your body.

local charities like the Delta Hospital Foundation, Delta Hospice, Roberts Bank Lifeboat Society — Delta and the local food bank. The LBA also sponsors scholarships at Delta Secondary and the Kwantlen Polytechnic University trades program. “Many of the events we run, to help encourage business in Ladner generate some profits and our intention is to pass those through to some of our designated charities,” said past president Brad Cooper. In 2009, the LBA donated $5,000 to the families affected by the fire on 48th Avenue, contributed to the new roof on Fishermen’s Hall, and made contributions to both the Delta Hospital Foundation and Delta Hospice. “Our mandate is to support local businesses and encourage all in Ladner and South Delta to shop local,” Cooper said. To further benefit its members, this year the LBA developed an association-style benefit package for small business members. “Many small business owners have had difficulty procuring benefits and have left themselves and their employees at risk,” Cooper said. In recent years, the association has worked to revamp its website; www.ladnerbusiness.com has become a wealth of information and a communication tool for the LBA. It’s a one-stop-shop where anyone can go to look up a local business or get information on upcoming events. As well, members can look up minutes from recent meetings and even advertise on the site. The LBA currently has more than 130 members and is always looking for more. For more information about the association, or to register as a member, visit www.ladnerbusiness.com.

The Ladner Business Association has been fostering a healthy environment for the business community of Ladner for many years. The association, which is governed by a board of directors and made up entirely of volunteers, works to fulfill several different purposes: to promote awareness of the goods and services provided by the Ladner business community; to articulate and promote the interests of the business community to the community at large and to the surrounding areas; and, to promote the well being of the community of Ladner. The LBA believes that local businesses need a voice and that voice should represent all members — retail, service or the home-based entrepreneur. The association holds weekly meetings — 8 a.m. every Thursday at the Ladner Legion — where members can socialize, network and exchange ideas while taking care of association business. There are often guest speakers visiting to talk about a variety of different topics affecting the community, and local politicians also regularly attend the meetings to keep members abreast of what’s going on locally, provincially and nation-wide, and how it affects local businesses. Over the years, the LBA has continued to organize and sponsor many annual events in the community that help create lasting memories and keep families coming back year after year — the Easter parade and outdoor Easter egg hunt, the Quilt Walk and Car Show, Breakfast with Santa, tree lighting and children’s Christmas parade. The association also believes in giving back to the community. Over the years it has been actively supporting members of the community and

Membership in the Ladner Business Association is not just for businesses located in the downtown core. The association has a wide range of members from a variety of businesses. Laura Thomas is a selfemployed writer and professional storyteller, also known as Agent Story. She’s been self-employed for the past eight years and just joined the LBA last fall. She is already on the executive. Thomas said she first attended an LBA meeting last year when she was looking for sponsorship for a big storytelling event she was organizing. She said she was impressed by how well the meeting was run. Thomas said she was also impressed with the fact local politicians regularly attended the meetings and provided updates on many other things that were affecting the community. As someone who is selfemployed and works from home, Thomas said being an LBA member helps make her feel more plugged into the community and local business scene. She said membership is inexpensive and there is no pressure to attend the weekly meetings or volunteer.

This likely isn’t news to Ladnerites, but the community’s friendly residents and small-town feeling are seen as big draws to potential homebuyers looking to set down some new roots. “It’s a village community, everybody seems to take care of each other,” said Russ Nugent, a life-long Ladner resident and a real estate agent with Re/Max Progroup Realty. Nugent, who was born and raised in Ladner, said it’s the spirit of the community that draws potential homebuyers from other areas. He said many of his clients love the village atmosphere and comment that the people are genuine.

Teri Steele, an agent with Sutton-Group Seafair Realty, said the annual Ladner Village Market, which kicked off its 15th season earlier this month, has helped raise the community’s profile in the region. She said many potential buyers like the small-town feeling combined with the relatively easy access to the city. “They love the fact that it’s a small town and yet it’s good shopping,” she said. Steele also noted that she has seen many clients who grew up in Ladner returning with their own young families. “Because it’s so safe,” she said, adding the crime rate is low compared to some other communities in the Lower Mainland.

A barbecue to mark Thrifty Foods’ 10th anniversary in Tsawwassen attracted a steady line Saturday afternoon. The Tsawwassen Rotary Club helped man the grill while cake and ice cream was given out inside the store. Three of the four former store managers were on hand to take part in the celebration.

Deloitte & Touche-Langley donated $6,000 to the Kids 1st Capital Campaign. “The society that our kids are growing up in is so different than when we were children and we need to have facilities like this that will promote physical literacy for everyone. Our team is very happy to be helping the kids in Delta.” The Delta Sport

Development Centre is the new home of Delta Gymnastics Society, which has a 35-year history of providing programming to local youth. For information on how to donate, call 604-9430460 or e-mail info@deltagymnastics.com.

The Delta Sport Development Centre’s Kids 1st Capital Campaign is close to completion with less than $55,000 now left to raise to finish outfitting the brand new facility. Last week, Rick Budiltz, on behalf of the partners of Deloitte & Touche-Langley, donated $6,000 to the campaign. Although their office is in Langley, they have staff with children involved with Delta Gymnastics Society. “I was very impressed with the story of the Delta Sport Development Centre and recognized the importance of keeping our youth physically fit and active,” said Budiltz while touring the 15,000-square-foot facility that opened in Ladner in April of this year.

The event always includes a traditional May Pole Dance and the crowning of the May Queen. The May Days festival weekend kicks off what is always a busy summer season in Ladner. The annual Ladner Village Market returns every June. In its 15th year this summer, the market runs every other Sunday throughout the summer starting in early June. Featuring more than 140 artisans from across B.C., the tradition also includes local merchants and free entertainment. The market not only draws locals every week, but also brings in browsers and shoppers from around the Lower Mainland,

Vancouver Island, Washington and Oregon. Organizers have estimated that each market attracts around 10,000 people. The Ladner Village Market, which runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., started on June 12 this year. Upcoming market dates are: June 26, July 10 and 24, Aug. 14 and 28 and Sept. 11. The month of June also features Ladner Bandfest at Memorial Park. The park was alive with the sound of music on the weekend of June 11 and 12 this year. A full roster of concert bands from around the Lower Mainland is always on hand for the twoday event. The festival has become one of the largest gatherings of adult musicians in Western Canada.

The 11th annual Tour de Delta is set for July 8, 9 and 10 this year and will feature both local cyclists and professional racers from around the world. New this year is Friday’s MK Delta Criterium in North Delta. On Saturday night, the Brenco Criterium will see racers speeding through Ladner Village once again. The criterium has been described as being “like NASCAR on wheels, but [with] more passing” as riders battle over a onekilometre circuit, reaching speeds of up to 60 kilometres an hour. The LBA caps off the summer season with the annual Quilt Walk and Car Show, which is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 21 this year. The event features hun-

dreds of quilts, which are displayed in store windows, while hundreds of classic cars line the streets of Ladner Village. The show usually runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and also includes a pancake breakfast, entertainment and other refreshments. In the fall and winter, the LBA sponsors a number of events aimed at celebrating the season. Family Fright Fest, which replaced PumpkinFest in 2009, is usually scheduled in the days before Halloween and is aimed at getting Ladnerites in the spooky spirit. Last year, the LBA merged with the municipality to make the spooky shindig bigger and better. And as the year winds down, the LBA brings several annual Christmas events to locals. The annual tree lighting ceremony, children’s parade and carol ships, which all take place on the same night, mark the beginning of the Christmas season for many Ladnerites. And the yearly Breakfast with Santa usually follows the next morning at the Ladner Community Centre and is a tradition that has been a part of many Ladner families for generations. The tennis court area at Memorial Park gets its greatest usage as the home of Ladner May Days’ beer garden. A plan is in the works to make it a four-court sand volleyball area.

Volleyball court proposal losing the existing tennis courts, where the annual May Days beer garden is held, could be addressed. Beach volleyball, or sand volleyball, is an Olympic sport played by teams of two players on a sand court, similar to regular hardwood floor volleyball that has more players. The commission asked

for a formal written proposal and also noted there would be an expectation the alumni association would become a non-profit society. The tennis courts at Memorial Park haven’t been functional for years. There are tennis courts located at the adjacent high school.

The changing face of Ladner From waterfront revitalization to new businesses, Ladner marches into future

There are some big changes afoot in South Delta and Ladner is no exception. The Corporation of Delta has spent the last couple of years looking at redeveloping and revitalizing Ladner’s downtown waterfront area. Formed in 2009, the Downtown Ladner Waterfront Redevelopment Advisory Committee has met on several occasions with property owners to see what can be done “to achieve a vibrant, people-oriented environment, with strong linkages to the waterfront reflecting and celebrating the historical roots of the community.” Currently, much of the land facing the waterfront is vacant, but that could all change over the next couple of years with restaurants, shops, galleries and other amenities. “I think Chisholm Street is going to wind up becoming a real draw in years to come and we may have a mini-Steveston on our hands, possibly, attracting all kinds of different businesses and a very eclectic mix,” Coun. Scott Hamilton, who chairs the committee, told the Optimist earlier this year. Municipal staff and the committee have had several meetings with property and business owners, and the public, around what the area will look like going into the

More than 200 people attended an open house in April where several proposals, including allowing higher building heights, were discussed.

While there was general support for revitalizing the area and bringing in more public amenities, some who attended raised concerns about proposed building height increases of up to four storeys on the south

side of Chisholm Street, traffic volume and management, and the need to keep development at an appropriate scale for the village. Municipal staff has asked the committee review all the comments from the open house and provide council with some recommendations. Last month, Delta council approved several recommendations to move the process forward, including sending out a request for proposals for the re-use of the Seven Seas building and the Brackman-Ker site. Council also directed staff to consult with Hamilton, committee vice-chair Coun. Ian Paton and members of the committee and report back with proposed bylaws to implement the waterfront revitalization vision. ••• A local park is also getting a new addition. Earlier this year Delta council approved an agreement with the Ladner Community Garden Society to establish a community garden at Kensignton Park North. The park officially opened June 18. entrance to the heart of Ladner Village. John and Siu Lowe started the store at that spot in 1963. The family ran the store for 30 years before John and Siu retired and sold the business to the Lee family. Unfortunately the profitability of corner grocery stores declined over the years, and keeping in mind the condition of the building, John and Siu decided to rebuild the store to be more adaptable to the economy and neighbourhood. The development process began in 2006 but the project was put on hold for more than a year after John Lowe’s passing in January 2007. After two years of discussion and negotiation with Delta, the province and other committees, the Lowe family last year announced the beginning

of construction of the new building, which is currently underway. The two-storey building will feature retail on the lower level and office space on the second floor. ••• Changes are also taking place at Trenant Park Square. Construction on the London Drugs expansion is well underway. As well, the completely remodeled Ricky’s All Day Grill re-opened in March after six weeks of construction. The new Ricky’s is smaller but has been revamped to better utilize space. The room that was previously used for private functions was separated from the restaurant and is now home to a Fatburger, which opened for business last week.

The society also envisions an instructional and demonstration component where children can learn about local farming and growing their own food. The plan also includes a garden where produce can be grown for the local food bank. Ladner used to have a community garden for seniors next to the old McKee House before the new seniors’ facility was built. Boundary Bay’s Karen Pacheco had her photo win gold at the annual Crescent Beach Photo Club Black and White Invitational last month. “It’s very nice to be honoured by your peers,” she said, adding she was shocked and thrilled to win. Her photo, titled Fisherman’s Fashion, was taken in a small village south of Shanghai in 2009. It’s an image of traditional fishing clothing. Now retired, she was in China teaching for her final year of work.

Event at McKee Seniors’ Rec. Centre The monthly Birthday Lunch at McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre is a priority for the membership and they are always well attended. Members look forward to a wonderful lunch, entertainment, lots of fun and a small gift for all that have a birthday that month. The birthday lunches, held the last Friday of the month, provide diversity in both fare and performers. This month, McKee will honour members who are

over the age of 90. Almost 30 invitations have been sent to members 90plus. This event is on Friday, June 24 at 12:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance, no later than Thursday, June 23. The luncheon will include a cold plate, dessert, coffee and tea.

Members’ cost is $6 and guests (always welcome) are $7. Seniors over the age of 90 are free this month. Guitarist and singer Peter Tennant will provide the entertainment. For tickets and other information about the event, call the seniors centre at 604-946-1411.

Pacheco is also the new president of the Delta Photo Club. The group received the highest score among the eight local clubs participating at last month’s event. Pacheco noted being a member of the club has helped her develop her photography skills.

Karen Pacheco’s photo won gold at the Crescent Beach Photo Club Black and White Invitational. The club resumes meetings in September at the KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen. New

members are welcome, she said. Visit the club’s website at deltaphotoclub.ning.com.

Delta Lacrosse reaches out to schools

Elementary program not only introduces children to the sport but gets current players involved as mentors as well The Delta Lacrosse Association has successfully concluded the second year of its Elementary School Program. This year, the sessions were expanded within the Tsawwassen and Ladner area to include more primary aged students and the time frame was extended so that the leaders and mentors/helpers of the program were able to attend each school in consecutive weeks. Lacrosse demonstrations/skill sessions for approximately 250 primary aged students at Cliff Drive, Ecole South Park and Neilson Grove elementary schools were held over a two or three week period — starting in April and concluding in May. Head instructors, Les Wolanski and Andy Walters, were able to teach and have the primary aged students achieve the goal of learning some basic lacrosse skills, then having the lesson repeated and expanded the following week. “The program is really a two prong idea,” explained program coordinator Diane Manojlovic. “We wanted to allow each primary student an opportunity to participate and learn a little bit more

about the ‘fastest game on two feet.’ “Lacrosse is a game that requires a great deal of running, passing and catching. It develops the gross motor skills and the hand eye co-ordination of its participants. With this in mind, the program is geared for primary aged students to ensure the greatest benefit can be achieved by each student within the program.” “The second prong is that we as an association try to enlist Grade 6 or 7 mentors/helpers who currently attend the school that the program is being run out of. If we need to sublimate the program with past alumni or high school students we were able do this. This allows the young students a sense of familiarity with our leaders and mentors. “By having our mentors/helpers assisting the primary students within their own school it allows them an opportunity to take on a leadership role within their school. Our mentors were able to participate in an activity they love to do, but they also were able to learn a life lesson of the spirit of community and giving back which we feel is so important.” Delta Lacrosse’s Elementary School Program, which recently concluded its second season, took place (left) at Cliff Drive, Ecole South Park and Neilson Grove. The sessions also provided an opportunity for players to serve as mentors and give back to their sport. “Our volunteer leaders and mentors/helpers that participated were excited at the amount of development the children achieved in such a short time. “ Delta Lacrosse would like to extend its thanks to the 2010 Legacies Now Local Sports Program Development Fund. With these funds, the association was

able to expand the program and reach more students. Delta Lacrosse sends a large thank-you to the following volunteers of the Elementary School Program: Leaders — Les Wolanski, Andy Walters, Cam Summers, Patty Burr and Randy Kelder Mentors/Helpers — Jared

Beaton, Sean Cochrane, Hayden Dance, Riley Duimel, Hayden Grant, Liam Grant, Nic Hefford, Adam Husdon, Mitchell Kelder, Michael Manojlovic, Callum McDougall, Charlie Moore, Addy Park, Mitchell Robinson, Dylan Skujins, Meaghan Snow, Trevor Snow, Jordan Smith, Justin Smith, Dawson Trimble and Ryan Walters.

Sunday’s finals got off to a terrific start as the junior heavyweight eight crew edged Brentwood College by 1.58 seconds to win gold. The senior lightweight fours also reached the top of the podium with a 5.13 second victory. The junior lightweight eight crew rounded out a productive day with a bronze medal performance. George passed away June 8, 2011 at the age of 88 with his family at his side. In his youth, George was an accomplished athlete, coach, manager and promoter of sport in his then home-town, Kelowna. Throughout his life Dad also enjoyed the “Sport of Kings”, thoroughbred horse-racing. George spent 24 years with the Canadian National Telegraph as a Morse Operator in Kelowna, Vernon and Vancouver. His most enjoyable assignment of all was during the 40’s, transmitting live Vancouver Capilano baseball play-by-play from the press box of what is now Nat Bailey Stadium. In the summer of 1948, Dad married the love of his life Marguerite. Daughter Karen arrived in 1956, son Ken in 1957. Later in the 50’s, at the request of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, Dad assisted with the assembly of senior hockey players from across Canada, to be the first-ever Canadian hockey team invited to play in communist Russia. In the early 60’s, he co-owned and managed one of the first A&W franchises in Canada, in Trail, BC. From 1968 until his retirement in 1988, he operated the One Hour Martinizing dry-cleaning store in Tsawwassen. During this time, through community donations to the “Charity Barrel”, Dad dry-cleaned and laundered thousands of pounds of clothing, which he donated to numerous social service agencies throughout the lower mainland. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Marguerite, daughter Karen and her husband Barney, son Ken and his wife Sandy, two beloved granddaughters, Brooke and Courtney, and cherished nieces Maureen, Sylvia, Bessie, Kathleen, Susan and Diane and nephews Alwyn, David and Robert. The family wishes to thank the loving home support women who so ably met Dad’s daily needs for the last several years. Dad valued each of you for the friendships developed. Dad loved this little community of Tsawwassen which was his home for over 40 years. To all of the merchants and their employees who were so kind and helpful to Dad, especially in the last years while he cared for Mom at home, we are grateful. Your service and friendship to Dad were so important to his independence. Thank you all. No flowers or service by request. Donations may be made to the Delta Hospice Society or the Delta Hospital Foundation.
