Citizens’ patrol takes drinking driver off street A suspected drunk driver and perpetrators of vehicular crimes were caught by local residents. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Two Citizen’s Patrol groups helped Langley RCMP scoop up a stolen car and stop a drunk driver in one evening last week. On Friday, June 14, an Aldergrove group

found a vehicle with stolen licence plates attached, said Const. Craig Van Herk. Police officers arrived and found that the car was uninsured. A second car, also with stolen plates was found nearby. This time, the car itself was also stolen from the same neighbourhood, three days earlier. Meanwhile in Brookswood, another Citizen’s Patrol group spotted a driver heading by with open alcohol in his car. The driver was pulled over by police and

they started an impaired driving investigation, said Van Herk. “Our Citizens Patrol are a very dedicated group of volunteers who are regularly contributing significant amounts of their time in a pro-active effort to keep our community safer,” said Supt. Derek Cooke, the head of the Langley RCMP detachment. “Over the years they have been instrumental in both preventing and solving many crimes.” The patrollers are trained to watch for and report suspicious activities in their communities.

Power boost saves cash Langley plans irk Metro Van

An energy efficiency program is paying immediate dividends for the Township.

A new community plan will guide how Langley develops for the next 40 years.

by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

by Matthew Claxton

The boilers at the George Preston Recreation Centre dated back to 1973, and were finally replaced earlier this spring. The old ones are now “on their way to the Langley Centennial Museum,” joked Langley Township facilities manager Earl Erickson. He was at Monday’s Township council meeting to talk about why the Township was getting a $21,072 cheque from Fortis B.C., the natural gas supplier. The cheque is a grant given for installing brand new, energy efficient boilers. It’s part of a project that Erickson and other staff have been working on across the community. “We’ve gone to high efficiency condensing boilers,” said Erickson. The vintage boilers, which supplied hot water and central heat for the rec centre, operated at about 65 per cent efficiency. The new ones will operate at about 98 per cent efficiency. The money from the grant will go into the next project, which will in turn likely generate another grant, which will be used for still further upgrades, and so on, Erickson said. The Township is in the middle of a virtuous cycle. It upgrades boilers and natural gas systems at community centres, Fortis gives it a grant for saving energy, and the grant is plowed back into more upgrades. Walnut Grove Recreation Centre will be the next target for a new boiler, which should save a lot of money due to the power needed to heat a pool. The only area where there will definitely not be

Langley Township is ready to do a complete revamping of its Official Community Plan, the first since 1979, but it could mean a dispute with Metro Vancouver. The OCP is being updated to match up with Metro Vancouver’s new Regional Growth Strategy. The first and second readings of the new policy, replacing one that has been amended and modified many times in the past three decades, were passed on June 17. There is already a concern that there could be conflicts between Metro and the Township. There are two sources of possible conflict, said Mark Bakken, the Township’s administrator. The new Regional Growth Strategy (RGS) is an attempt to set hard boundaries for urban sprawl. The Township has already sparred with Metro over growth issues related to the controversial University District plan around Trinity Western. The boundaries may also go right through single pieces of property, Bakken said. The other reason for conflict is the question of who gets to decide when the OCP is amended. Community plans are constantly being amended or updated across every municipality in the Lower Mainland. For example, if the Township decides to rezone land from single family houses to multi-family condos, the question of whether it is Langley Township or Metro Vancouver that rules on whether that change fits within the RGS will come up. Each side says it should have final say, said Bakken. These issues were laid out and discussed by the council Monday. If Metro Vancouver doesn’t like a vote by the Township, it could go to mediation or arbitration, with the province likely helping the process along. Councillor Bev Dornan noted that there are doubtless some things in the new OCP that will have to be tweaked, but it was good to get started. A public hearing will be held in the future on the project, and the council is expected to have more chances to talk about the overall plan next week. The OCP will guide Langley Township’s development for decades, and projects a rough doubling of population between now and the early 2040s, to more than 200,000 residents.

Matthew Claxton/Langley Advance

Two new boilers in the George Preston Recreation Centre will save the Township money every year, said facilities manager Earl Erickson. a grant is some upcoming updates to the Township’s Civic Facility, on 66th Avenue. Between new boilers and four solar panels to be installed later this month, there will be almost no need for natural gas at all. “We will be basically off the gas grid,” said Erickson. Natural gas will be needed for the building only on a few very cold days in the winter, he said. The initial costs of the upgrades around the Township are fairly high, noted Erickson. The George Preston boiler replacement cost $175,000. Between increased boiler efficiency and better control systems, it will save about $10,000 a year in energy costs. Overall, Erickson expects the system will take about 15 years to pay for itself.

Similar work has been done with lighting, through BC Hydro’s PowerSmart program over the last decade. Fluorescent and LED lights, which use less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, are coming on stream around the community, everywhere from the Operations Centre to the RCMP headquarters. The energy savings at the Operations Centre, where 70 watt bulbs were replaced with 18 watt LEDs giving the same amount of light, were considerable. “And we actually had a better colour of light,” Erickson said. Once replacing lights and boilers has taken efficiency as far as it can go, Erickson plans to use electronic controls and sensors to cut power use.

Aid for fire victims

Help continues for residents impacted by a fire at the Elm subsidized housing complex. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com

Residents harmed by the fire at the Elm apartment building will be getting some extra help. A fire on April 3 caused extensive damage. One man was killed and another was severely injured. As well many people were displaced. On June 17 the City handed out certificates of appreciation to the Township Fire Department, the Langley Lions Senior Citizens Housing Society, which owns the building, the Salvation Army Gateway of Hope, BC Ambulance and Southgate Church. Christian Life Assembly Senior Pastor Bruce Cantelon and Steve Nicholson, the associate pastor of missions, stopped by City council Monday evening with some additional help, a cheque for $25,000 to help residents get back on their feet. More than $19,000

came from a congregation collection and the church topped it up to $25,000 through a special fund. They presented the funds to Sid Gullion, chair of the Lions Society board, and Elm administrator Jeanette Dagenais. Some residents were forced to move away, and others found shelter in other Lions buildings, in Magnolia Gardens or with family and friends. Gullion said the last few units are ready for residents. Dagenais said the community has helped throughout. Soon after the fire, Southgate Church arranged for gift certificates for residents affected by the fire. “I called it the mustard fund,” Dagenais said, explaining that residents needed to buy the basics such as condiments. About half the residents were allowed to move back in days after the fire but the rest were displaced as repairs were done. “The residents were really, really amazing,” she commented. “I think there is a stronger bond in that building than ever before.” The Township Fire Department came out to help and was thanked by the City Monday. “If the same thing hap-

For those in a skills trade or technology based study program, being tested is part of the gig. But imagine being put up against your peers in a head-to-head, hands on contest of precision to test your abilities. This is exactly the makings of the annual Skills Canada National Competition. This year’s contest was held in early June at BC Place and Kwantlen Polytechnic University had three students place in the medals for their specific trades. The hectic pace of the competition is amped up by the time-limited nature. Students arrive knowing a small amount of what they are to do. At registration they are given detailed instructions and begin their tasks when the clock starts ticking. Nathaniel Printis, a welding student, earned a silver medal to add to the gold he won in the provincial competition. “Being able to compete nationally and represent B.C. as a welder in the Skills Canada Competition has been one of the biggest highlights of my life,” said Printis.

Kevin O’Connor, in the landscape apprenticeship program, together with his close friend, Langley resident Jason Thompson of the turf management program, each earned a bronze medal for their combined results in the landscape garden category. The pair also won a gold medal in the provincial competition. “It’s very much a test of our skill set and a test of our ability to follow the design,” O’Connor said. He credits his friendship with Thompson for making the outcome possible. “Having Jason there was definitely a great experience,” noted O’Connor. “We wanted something at the national level, we wanted to be on the podium and at day two we felt very confident,” he said. “It was a sense of accomplishment and pride.” The competition tests students against their peers from across the nation.

Flight still an exciting world

When the Langley Airport (now the Langley Regional Airport) was created in the late 1930s, it was two mowed strips in a field, plus a few lights. Now it has dozens of businesses, numerous private planes and helicopters, a museum, machine shops, a modern control tower, and multiple paved runways. It has completed all this change without ever getting any larger. Pinned between 56th Avenue and Fraser Highway, with a creek to the west and 216th Street to the east, the airport has had to grow up, both figuratively and literally. The Langley Airport will Email with never be a huge international airport – and frankly, local pople wouldn’t want that, anyway. What it is, and what we hope it will remain, is a mixture of things. A place where young people can learn about the joy of flying, whether through formal lessons or the Air Cadets. A place where people can learn about the province’s history of aviation through the Canadian Museum of Flight. A driver of the local economy as a source of well-paying hightech jobs. A spot to catch a flight to other parts of B.C., when a bus ticket just won’t do. A good place to grab a coffee and a sandwich and watch the planes take off. The airport is celebrating 75 years this weekend, with vintage and modern aircraft taking to the skies. We don’t exactly know what the future holds for the airport. It has developed almost all its available land, and it has turned into a major centre for the helicopter industry. Perhaps it can yet find new niches and new frontiers to conquer. Partnerships with universities, an expanded museum, new buildings for the Northside, these are all potential futures. Even if it had remained just a sleepy little rural airport, the Langley Airport would still be a valuable addition to the community. Who wouldn’t want to live in a town where people can sometimes just hop in a plane and visit the sky? – M.C.

about five feet into the crosswalk, and also to alert the driver to the fact that a pedestrian was in danger. He had plenty of time and space to stop. His response? He gave me the finger out of his driver’s side window, sped through the crosswalk, and almost killed the girl. Had I not honked, she would have proceeded and been killed, to the absolutely, no doubt about it. Do you know what it means to stick up your middle finger at someone? Now I ask, do you think his behaviour was appropriate for a businessman in a small town? How would you feel if your doctor, your waitress, your barber, or your banker gave you the finger? Worse yet, how would he feel if he had hit and killed the girl… after giving us the finger? Remember, this is a small town. People know us as businessmen. They hear and see things. They talk about these things among themselves. Wayne Boylan, Aldergrove

HandyDART service under attack TransLink has given 10,000 hours of HandyDART service to taxis. Up to 28 HandyDART drivers are to be laid off on July 22. Devastating working people’s lives and forcing vulnerable people into taxis is no answer to a crisis. HandyDART passengers are not “satisfied” while being stranded in their

homes. They receive safe, door-to-door service in a HandyDART. Taxi trips cannot replace a service that took over 30 years to build. HandyDART’s drivers have training and accountability that will never be equaled by the taxi industry. The provincial government ran under a familyfirst banner. Now untold HandyDART passengers are put at risk and drivers lose their jobs. Instead of using the carbon tax to improve public transit, the provincial government and TransLink hurt the very people they are meant to serve. Little value in TransLink promises

Dear Editor, Before the construction of the Golden Ears Bridge, the Ministry of Transportation (MOT) and TransLink hosted a number of open houses regarding the project. I asked about the tolls and was assured that the B.C. tolling policy guaranteed that “tolls will be implemented only if a reasonable untolled alternative is available.” I was assured that the Port Mann Bridge would remain untolled, and so I left, assuaged by their assurances. We all know how that promise turned out. As a resident of Walnut Grove, I am informed that the “reasonable untolled alternative” for me to visit Pitt Meadows is the Pattullo Bridge – which would only add an hour or two to my trip. In 2011/12, the MOT and TransLink hosted a number of open houses regarding the then unnamed 200th Street Exchange (now the Carvolth exchange). I expressed concern that the route under the highway would become a short cut to

Dear Editor, “Last year, TransLink delivered more and better service – more efficiently – and achieved record-level customer satisfaction.” That opening statement in TransLink’s invitation to its Annual General Meeting is a travesty. More than 30,000 HandyDART trips were denied last year.

go south of Highway One, especially considering the poor quality of 206th Street and 86th Avenue east of the exchange, where the road is extremely narrow and the very sharp corner is unlit, with no sidewalks for pedestrians or hard shoulders for bicycle users. At both meetings I was assured by the MOT and TransLink that the underpass would be HOV only, and would thus never become a general commuter route. Imagine my lack of surprise when it was announced, less than a year after its opening, that the road is being opened to general traffic as a “pilot project.” Even by MOT/TransLink standards, breaking a promise in the first year of operation is impressive. After all, it took them four years to break their word on the “reasonable untolled alternative.” Blair King, Walnut Grove

Dear Editor, A short time ago, I frequented a local businessman’s establishment. He did good work and was very polite, and I believe I gave him a tip larger than most do. That is my way. I value good service, and as a businessman here in Aldergrove, I think we should take care of the people who do good work locally. In a small town, one becomes readily recognized by a lot of people. Even if you don’t know them well, they become familiar with your face and associate you with the business you own or manage, or even just work there. Fast forward to the time when he left work on that Thursday evening. I was driving east on Fraser Highway with a passenger who also knows that businessman’s face. At 271st Street, a young girl was waiting to cross at a crosswalk. I stopped to let her cross (it is the law to do so, by the way). And there he was, driving very fast westbound. When I determined that he had no intention of stopping, I honked my horn, loud and long, to alert the girl, already now

That means an upgrade gets immediate results. In Langley Township, a few buildings were constructed that far back, but others were built in the 1990s or later, and were already fairly energy efficient.

Porsche next in auto mall

The latest luxury maker announces plans. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com

The next tenant at the Collection Auto Mall will be Porsche. Langley City council approved a development permit for a 41,604 square foot dealership by Open Road. It will sit on the southeast corner at Glover Road and the Langley Bypass. Initial plans for the Collection Auto Mall called for that space to be used as a mixed use retail and office space. The building will be a two-storey glass front structure with the car inventory on the roof. The City asked for the plans to change to include a sidewalk around the front of the building from Glover and along the Bypass to connect up with the dealerships along the back of the property. At the June 17 council meeting Councillor Dave Hall wondered about pedestrian safety as people go between these dealerships and the new Mercedes dealership being constructed across the Bypass. There was also discussion at the Advisory Planning Commission about a pedestrian overpass across the bypass. Staff said few people are expected to walk as they typically must have their vehicles with them for trade ins. The City received one letter from the community about light spillage from the site, which the project proponents said would not take place. Paul Albrecht spoke at the public hearing Monday evening. He asked about the environmental considerations in the construction, which there are none. Albrecht also put in a plug for the project using local businesses, builders and suppliers to support the community. So far the auto mall includes Mini/BMW, Audi, and Infiniti. Down the road a Jaguar/Land Rover dealership is planned.

Summer Maintenance of Rural Boulevards and Ditches

The Township of Langley uses three full-time and one seasonal roadside grass mower for ditch mowing. This equipment has predetermined routes or an assigned area to follow. If the equipment is pulled away to do a specific request, it only lengthens the time it takes to fully complete all the rural boulevards and ditches. If you have a request for mowing or brushwhacking, we ask that you be patient as we try to fit the work schedule in as efficiently as possible. The Township, along with Provincial and Federal agencies, have classified open channel water systems into three categories: Class A ditches are fish bearing and Class B ditches are fish habitat. Both of these categories require formal approval before any work can be completed. Class C ditches are deemed to have no fish or fish habitat issues whatsoever and only require notification for work to take place. How or when a ditch is cleaned depends on its classification. Community mourns the passing of a true business leader Store

Roxanne Hooper

rhooper@langleyadvance.com

My heart goes out to Kate Davies and her sons Garth and Grant following this week’s loss of a real gentleman and friend to this community. Langley is mourning the loss of a true business leader with the passing

of Craig Davies, who lost a brief battle with cancer Monday morning. Craig, who was owner of Design One Graphics and the 2011 businessperson of the year, was one of the very first business owners I met upon my return home

to Langley. In his capacity as president of the Downtown Business Association, he was sharing news about the upcoming Langley Community Day, and all that the merchants and City had on the books for the weekend festivities. His enthusiasm was contagious. And he was so sweet and patient with this relative newbie to the BIA. Trust me, that when I was last working with this newspaper in the early 1980s and the Langley Advance offices were Craig Davies on what has since become the one-way of Fraser Highway, I don’t remember there being an official merchants’ group and sure not one with members so passionately committed to the community as Davies. Craig, your compassion, dedication, and kindness are among the many attributes that will be missed. A celebration of life is still being finalized.

National Aboriginal Day to be marked with dancing, food and song in Langley City and Fort Langley on Saturday. by Ronda Payne news@langleyadvance.com

Proclaimed by the Governor General in 1996, National Aboriginal Day gives Canadians the chance to witness the uniqueness of First Nation, Métis, and Inuit cultures. Here in Langley, the celebration will come to life Saturday in Douglas Park and at the Fort Langley National Historic Site. Douglas Park at 20550 Douglas Cres. will be buzzing with sights and sounds from 5 to 8 p.m. with an event hosted by the Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society. “It’s a day to show the community what the Aboriginal community inside our community is about,” said Denbigh MacIntosh, a member

The concept for Walnut Grove Family Festival took root when Timothy Payne put the question to his children, 10year-old Sydney and nine-year-old Logan, asking what they’d like to see in the way of a new community event that he and his fellow Rotarians could put on. “Really, they were the ones that told me it would be good to have a fun day to end the school year,” said Payne, cofounder and coordinator of the family festivities being held this Saturday outside Walnut Grove Secondary. Giving his kids part of the credit, Payne also attributed a huge part of the event’s existence and success to Moe Cole Armour Wetzel and the Langley singer-songwriter members of the Walnut Grove Business Association. It was serendipitous that while Payne was pondering the festival idea, so too was WGBA president Wetzel. While fellow Rotarians in the Rotary Club of Langley Sunrise were game to help host a community event, it was the additional support of all the business owners in Walnut Grove that made the event possible, Payne said, noting it’s a costly undertaking. “Without all the businesses paying to be there, we couldn’t put it on for free,” he elaborating, noting that upwards of 50 food vendors and booths will be set up around the running track and parking lot during the day. This Saturday, June 22, marks the second year for the Walnut Grove Famliy Day, and the event will feature games, kids activities, a petting zoo, pony rides, and bingo. On the entertainment front, Langley’s own singing sensation Cole Armour and Bobby Bruce’s Nearly Neil act are headlining the day, accompanied by four of the 2013 Langley Has Talent contenders. continued on page A17…

Day raises money for less fortunate students …continued from page A13

This is a return performance for Armour, who took the stage last year anxious to help raise money and awareness about the issue of bullying in schools – one of the efforts that received funds from the event last year. Well, this year again, the Walnut Grove Family Day is a intended as a thank you to the community but also a fundraiser. And again, Payne said, the money will be earmarked for the Langley School Board Foundation – to aid less fortunate kids. To that end, there are a number of efforts being taken at Saturday’s event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the school sports field off Walnut Grove Drive, to raise funds. In addition to charging any participating business a fee and percentage to participate, money will also

be garnered from a 50/50 draw, bingo, games, and a voluntary admission donation at the gates. Once the $7,000 bill was paid for putting on the day, Payne said last year’s event generated $5,300 – about

$4,000 of which was given out – primarily to individual students in need. “We’re hoping that this year we can give away more,” Payne said, hoping to double last year’s attendance of about 2,500.

Other events will include hot air balloon rides, facepainting, bouncy castles, and tours of fire trucks, police equipment, and ambulances. More information is at www.wgba.ca.

Fort artists put aside colour by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@langleyadvance.com

A

rtists from the Fort Gallery are trying something different this month, with their show Black & White, which opened Wednesday. The artists who exhibit in the Fort Langley gallery have decided to put aside the colours they’re so familiar with, and work solely with black and white for one show, explained gallery manager Tim Fraser. “The resulting artwork is both dramatic and elegant, and on display now at the gallery,” he said, noting it’s not just paintings, but fused glass, pen and ink drawings, and printmaking on exhibit. The show runs at the Fort Gallery, 9048 Glover Rd. until July 7, with the artist’s reception on Friday, June 21, starting at 7 p.m. It’s open to the public. • More at www.langleyadvance.com, search “Fort”

Trying to get to Mainstage

M

embers of the Langley Players Drama Club are helping out their acting buddies from north of the Fraser River this weekend, by hosting two showings of Emerald Pig’s play, Trying. The Maple Ridge thespians won the provincial theatre championships recently, and earned a spot at the provincials in Kamloops next month. But to pay for the excursion – not only for the members but the entire set – the homeless Pigs needed somewhere to hold some extra fundraising shows. Langley stepped up. The Friday night showing of Trying is already sold out, but seats are still available for Saturday, June 22 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 and only available through Brown Paper Tickets at www. brownpapertickets.com/event/397282.

award-winning creations – are on display in Langley this weekend. For three days, Friday through Sunday, the George Preston Recreation Centre is being taken over by quilters from the Fraser Valley Quilterrs’ Guild, and while admission for women-folk is $5, men get in free. The quilt show, called Fabric Fiesta, will include the quilt display, as well as a merchants’ mall, a tea room, and a member’s boutique. And there will be a quilt or two raffled off, if you can believe their website [www.fvqg.org], and there’s even going to be an iron quilters challenge. The show runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

M

ore than 50 emerging artists and artisans will be showing off their wares against a picturesque South Langley winery this weekend. Township 7, in one of its frequent community events, is hosting Art in the Vines this Sunday, June 23, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with admission by donation to Osteoporosis Canada. The event will feature exhibits of crafts, jewelry, glass, pottery, paintings, photography, and clothing, among other handcrafted items. There will be a barbecue, and music by Fraser Valley music producer, multi-genre musician, and songwriter Ryan McAllister.

Summer adds size to flowers

A

s May merges into June, spectacular flowers begin unfolding – huge blooms, intense colours, and a presence that can be fondly remembered long after they fade. Oriental poppies fill this niche. An eruption of their fiery scarlet blooms (often 20 centimetres wide) is visible blocks away. Gentler whites and pale pinks are also available, as are purple-reds, bi-colours, picotees, and fringed or lacinated petals. The floppy, delicate

petals are deceptive. Oriental poppies are hardy survivors in any sunny, well-drained place. Their thick taproots guarantee drought-resistance, and they can live with little fertilizer. After flowering, they vanish into dormancy, leaving a bare patch, but fall rains bring fresh leaves that remain all winter.

Herbaceous peonies also love sun and good drainage, and are greedy feeders with an appetite for compost, bonemeal, or mushroom or other well-rotted manure. Their flowers are at least 20cm across, and some are very fragrant. One of the most fragrant herbaceous peonies is the heritage white, red-speckled ‘Festiva Maxima,’ which develops deep red foliage in fall, then dies down for winter. Their clusters slowly expand as they flower

through decades. It’s safer not to mulch the roots. Thick mulch prevents flowering. They can be divided in fall, but flowers may be smaller for a couple of years. Tree peonies like similar conditions to herbaceous peonies, but are shrubs that retain their woody framework and grow quite large. They can handle part shade. Their flowers are huge, sometimes 60cm across. They are not grown as often as herbaceous peonies, but are even more eye-catching. Usually, tree peonies are grafted, stems emerging from the base will produce small, single peony flowers, and should be removed. Rhododendrons also produce huge flower clusters and are easy to grow in our west coast climate, not least because these woodland shrubs like a sun-shade mix and an airy, well-drained, moistureretaining soil. Bark mulch is a good aerator mixed in the planting hole. The award-winning rhododendron ‘Lem’s Cameo’ sometimes produces up to 20 pinkish yellow flowers in its clusters. Also interesting is Rhododendron augustinii with its lavender blue flowers. All the dwarf Rhododendron yakushianums have pink or white

flower clusters that are relatively large. They fit nicely into small spaces. When the other flowers fade, some roses can carry colour and fragrance to the fall. The David Austin series offers large, double, fragrant blooms for long periods, longer if deadheaded. The two-metre pink ‘Heritage’ is said to be almost thornless. Some rugosa roses have very large blooms and repeat-flower, like the white ‘Blanc Double de Coubert’ and the heritage ‘Hansa.’ Rugosas are thorny and tend to sucker, but are very fragrant. Most rugosas are superbly disease resistant. Like other roses, they love rich feeding and water. Landscape roses are also extremely disease-resistant. Their healthy leaves are a pleasure to behold, but usually aren’t noticed since these bushes produce flowers from summer through to frost. The bushes have relatively small and usually non-fragrant flowers, but stand up beautifully in difficult situations.

Cycling

Tuft off to France A Langley cyclist will be riding in the Tour de France.

Langley’s Svein Tuft will make his Tour de France debut this month with the ORICAGreenEDGE team. Tuft, who has previously raced in two of the three Grand Tour cycling events – he’s done two Giro D’Italias and a Vuelta a Espana, in Italy and Spain – will be key as a time trial specialist for the team. The nine-man squad will be led by Stuart O’Grady, a Tour de France veteran who has appeared in every Tour since 1997. He has supported riders like Andy and Frank Schleck, and Carlos Sastre to six podium finishes. “The team objective this year is to win a stage at the Tour de France,” said sport director Matt White. “That’s our main goal. We’re bringing a more diverse team this year to give us a few more options for intermediate stages and days in the medium mountains.” Tuft is an eight-time Canadian National Time Trial Champion. “Svein is a worldclass time trialer,” said White. “He’ll be crucial for our team timetrial ambitions. He’s a strong guy with a huge amount of power to chase breakaways or look after the sprint train. We can use him in a lot of ways. I’m really looking forward to taking him to his first Tour de France.” ORICA-GreenEDGE is an Australian team, formed in 2011.

Niagara University and NCAA Div. 1 baseball is in the cards for a Maple Ridge pitcher who plays in Langley.

Langley Blaze pitcher and Maple Ridge resident Liam Stroud, 18, will play NCAA Div. 1 ball with Niagara University.

by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@langleyadvance.com

Liam Stroud is indicative of a new wave of Herculean-like baseball players. At 6’3” tall and a chiseled 205 pounds, the 18-year-old Langley Blaze pitcher looks more like a football linebacker or hockey power forward than a few notable pudgy MLB pitchers from eras present and past such as CC Sabathia (modern), Fernando Valenzuela (1980s and ’90s), and the original “Behemoth of Bust” Babe Ruth (early 20th century). Instead, Stroud’s physique resembles that of one of his Blaze predecessors Brett Lawrie, the strapping third baseman from Langley who is an everyday player with the Toronto Blue Jays. “I work out every day,” Stroud said. “I was always athletic, always played a lot of sports, but it’s only been the last eight or nine months or so where I’ve kind of focused on working out and fitness.” While his pitching arsenal includes a change-up and curveball, not surprisingly, considering his size, the righthander’s bread-andbutter pitch leaves his hand quickly and with volumes of velocity. Stroud says his fastball can hit a blurring 88 mph. “I feel comfortable throwing it at any time,” he said, during a morning break in classes at Westview Secondary in Maple Ridge, where he is finishing up his Grade 12 year. His fastball has worked for him so far this B.C. Premier Baseball League campaign. Heading into last weekend’s action with the Blaze, he had won five of six starts with a 1.76 ERA, 43 strikeouts, 12 walks, with just 24 hits allowed in 43 innings pitched. On June 11 Stroud threw a complete game 5-0 win over the

Troy Landreville Langley Advance

Coquitlam Reds, with nine strikeouts and five hits allowed. Stroud will start a new chapter in his ball career this fall when he heads to Niagara University on an NCAA Div. 1 scholarship. At Niagara, he plans on majoring in psychology with a possible minor in criminology, with the goal of, he said, “somewhere along the lines” of sports psychology, if a baseball career doesn’t pan out. “I’m nervous and excited,” he said. “I hope to become one of their starters by the end of my

freshman year. I’m excited to go there. It’s going to be something new. But I’m nervous because it’s totally different, across the continent.” Stroud flies out to New York on Aug. 28. “It’s coming up quick,” said Stroud, who received plenty of exposure from NCAA scouts by playing in the BCPBL and for the Blaze in particular. He didn’t simply decide to play in Langley because of the club’s proximity from his hometown. The Blaze program is considered by many to be the best in Canada and Stroud feels he has improved under the tutelage of head coach/ general manager Doug Mathieson, coach Jamie Bodaly, and Blaze alumni Denver Wynn and Mike Ellis. “It’s a great place to play,” he said. “When I first went there [to Langley] in Grade 10 I threw kind of hard but my control was not there, at all. My numbers this year show how far I’ve come.” Stroud has come a long way from his early days playing baseball. He started at five years old as a third baseman and pitcher. “I definitely developed,” he

said. “When I started with the Blaze, I was okay, but over the past couple of years with Doug and Denver and Jamie… it’s all come together.” Mathieson noted that Stroud is brimming with potential. “He’s a hard-working kid,” Mathieson said. “He’s got a Major League body and he’s certainly worked hard at it. He’s a kid who struggled through things early and this year has really found his way. He’s a good teammate, a good kid who works hard, and he’s very polite. He’s very well deserving to get that D1 scholarship.” Despite what’s been a fantastic season so far, Stroud wasn’t taken in this year’s MLB Draft June 6-8. That means, due to NCAA rules, he won’t be available to be drafted until his third year of university. Players at four-year schools are ineligible for the draft until their junior (third) year. Stroud is okay with that development, and was quick to congratulate his Blaze teammate, fellow Maple Ridge resident Tyler O’Neill on being selected 85th overall (third round) by the Seattle Mariners. O’Neill, 17, who plays right field, third base, and catcher, was the first B.C. player selected in the 2013 MLB draft and second Canadian overall. “We’re really good friends,” Stroud said. “We go to the gym together and we’ve played together for a long time.” Stroud hopes to follow O’Neill as an MLB draft pick in the nottoo-distant future. “I didn’t really expect to [get drafted],” he said looking back at the past draft. “I feel that if I keep working and keep progressing the way I have, then I have the potential to get drafted out of university.” Whether he ends up being a pro baseball player or follows a different path, Stroud will maintain strong values, a trait passed down to him by his mom, Patti. “I was raised by mom, and she has always taught me to appreciate what we have and to help others,” he said. Patti, who watches as many of Liam’s game as her schedule will allow, is also her son’s most honest critic. “When I do good, she’ll tell me I did good but when I’m not doing so good, she’ll offer constructive criticism,” Stroud said with a smile. “She’ll tell it as it is, and that’s what I need.”

A former Trinity Western University Spartan is playing pro volleyball in France. by Mark Janzen Contributor

Former Trinity Western men’s volleyball middle Dan Jansen Van Doorn inked his first professional contract last as he signed on to join Tourcoing Lille Métropole of France’s Pro B league this fall. The 6’8” 220-pound middle graduated from TWU this spring after an impressive five-year career in which he helped the Spartans to two CIS

national championships, in 2011 and 2012, a CIS silver medal, in 2010, and four Canada West medals, including gold in 2012, silver in 2010 and 2013, and bronze in 2011. Individually, the Langley native was named a CIS tournament all-star for his efforts in guiding the Spartans to gold in 2012. After training with Canada’s national senior B team last summer, Jansen Van Doorn was recently named to Canada’s 18member roster for the FISU Games in Kazan, Russia July 4-19. Of those 18 players, 12 will travel to Kazan. Initially, Jansen Van Doorn had planned on attending Canada’s Full-

And after Canadian national team coach Glenn Hoag – whose son Nicholas also plans to join Tourcoing this fall – encouraged Jansen Van Doorn to sign, it was an easy decision. “I had heard good things about Tourcoing,” Jansen Van Doorn said. “The first person I talked to was one of my good friends, Chris Hoag, and he talked to his dad [Glenn], who said they had a really good coach and it would be a good environment to play in.”

Baseball opponents faced a Devilish defeat The North Langley Devils returned home with gold medals.

Prayers came true for the North Langley Devils. The North Langley Diamond Sports (NLDS) U10 Mite Select Team (U10 Girls) won gold in Richmond over the weekend. The Richmond Girls Softball Association (RGSA) heldtthe annual U10 Mite Select Tournament. The North Langley Devils won all four games in the round-robin ranking first after the round robin. They won

the semi-final game against the North Delta All-stars which moved them into the final. The gold medal final was against the Richmond Islanders and when all was said and done, the score sheet read 13-0 for the North Langley Devils. Maya Moreno had a perfect pitching game in the final with five innings and 15 continuous strike-outs. A Langley team has never won in this tournament in the past. The weekend wasn’t all serious. The girls took part in fun contests such as team base races, fastest pitcher and longest hitter. And even there

the Devils did well. The North Langley Devils took home the first place trophy for the fastest team, Maya Moreno won third for the fastest pitcher and Anna Rudetsky took second for the hardest hitter. The squad is made up of Amber Caskey, Rylee Baly, Alysia Dickens, Anna Rudetsky, Maya Moreno, Makenna Baly, Abby McGlynn, Hailey Bowsher, Raya Crone, Olivia Sing, Nicole Nordal, Brooklyn Dougans, and Mikayla Tupper, along with coaches Steve Crone, San Caskey, Trevor Moreno, Chad McGlynn and Kim Payne.

How to Build a Part-time Business while keeping your present job? Leveraging your efforts to build a residual income!

Troy Landreville/Langley Advance

Track and field athlete Dustin Beard has his sights set on the upcoming 2013 Special Olympics BC Summer Games in Langley. The 22-year-old will be competing in the 1,500m race, long jump, and shotput at the July 11-14 Games.

Dad supports track athlete

Dustin Beard will attend his second Special Olympics BC Summer Games when the event comes to Langley. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@langleyadvance.com

Dustin Beard is a familiar face at the Langley Events Centre during the junior A hockey season. He hopes the same will be said around the medal podium in mid-July when he represents his hometown at the 2013 Special Olympics BC Summer Games. “I’m hoping to win lots of gold medals,” Dustin said. The 22-year-old has volunteered at junior A hockey games – first with the Langley Chiefs, then with the Rivermen – since the LEC began hosting sporting events back in 2009. He sorts and prepares sticks for the Rivermen players and does other volunteer duties for the B.C. Hockey League team during its home games. Dustin is an athlete in his own right. He competes in Special Olympics floor hockey and bowling in the winter, then switches to golf and track and field during the warmer months.

Info session June 25 @ 6:45pm QUALITY INN SUITES 6465 201 Street, Langley, BC RSVP to pameladaviesbiz@gmail.com

When the SOBC Games’ track and field event comes to McLeod Athletic Park, Dustin will be going for medals in the 1,500-metre, long jump, and shotput. He’s one of eight Langley track and field athletes involved in the July 11-14 multi-sport competition, joining Abigale Calvert, Jeannette Lavallee, Nikki Anderson, Andrea Zonneveld, Jennifer McCabe, Chris Wiens, and David Cairns. Dustin is getting lots of support from his dad Jim, a physical education teacher at Langley Christian School who doubles as the SOBC Langley track and field coach. The elder Beard said Special Olympics has given his son a peer group. “He went to a small school where there really weren’t other kids that were his peers,” he said. “It’s helped with his socialization and friendships.” This is the second SOBC Summer Games for Dustin, who competed in track and field at the Abbotsford event in 2009. That year, Jim cheered Dustin on as a parent and supporter. This year, Jim is a coach. “I’ve been coaching track for years, so I wanted to get involved in something he [Dustin] was doing,” Jim said. Dad has seen his son improve by leaps and bounds. “In training this spring he’s knocked about 16 seconds off his time from the qualifier last year in the 1,500,” Jim said. “And I think he can get even more time off that, too. There’s still three weeks to go. When I say, ‘A little faster,’ he just goes faster. He’s always got a bit more in the tank.”
