An Aldergrove man has died in an ATV accident in Mission over the holiday long weekend. Mission RCMP say that at about 6:20 p.m. on Monday, a group of visitors to Sylvester

Road found an ATV sitting mid-span on a bridge over a creek. The rider was found below the bridge in the creek. The 38-year-old victim had been travelling with friends on ATVs, but had left his group. He appears to have lost control of his vehicle as he approached the bridge, said Sgt. Miriam Dickson of the Mission RCMP. Dickson said the police are urging ATV riders to get training from qualified instructors, to wear approved helmets and riding gear, and to know their own driving limits.

There were 105 people found living without homes in Langley this year, up from 86 during the last count in 2008. However, there are significant changes in where those people are spending the nights. In 2008, Langley had no permanent homeless shelter, with church basements serving as temporary shelters during extremely cold or wet winter nights. The 2011 Metro Vancouver Homeless Count, conducted on March 16, was the first since the Gateway of Hope shelter was opened. This time, 44 of Langley’s homeless were listed as “sheltered” and 60 as “unsheltered.” One was listed as having no fixed address. That compares to 12 people in Langley who “There has to be that were homeless place where people but had some can settle in and form of shelter in 2008. figure out what to Unsheltered do.” homeless are Fraser Holland sleeping on the streets or in camps in the bush. Those listed as sheltered may be in some form of temporary housing such as a homeless shelter, drug detox or recovery, or transitional housing. Fraser Holland, a homelessness outreach worker, said that while services have improved, there is still a piece missing from the puzzle. “There has to be that place where people can settle in and figure out what to do,” Holland said. Even those homeless who want to move in to a place usually can’t afford to on their own. The cost of rental housing in Langley is generally above what is provided by social assistance, even for a one-bedroom suite, Holland said. Maureen Joyce, of Stepping Stone Community Services, said the same thing. “What we still need is the affordable housing piece,” she said.

New shoes for street folk A pair of Surrey foot specialists spent a day in Langley recently handing out free shoes to the less fortunate. On May 18, Brad Carpenter and Nicole Battistel of Bio Ped came to the Gateway of Hope to hand out footwear. Carpenter is a pedorthist,

and Battistel is an orthopedic race fitter. Both are taking part in a program called Goody2Shoes started by the firm for which they work. It began in Ontario, with the aim to collect and provide footwear to local shelters. This has expanded to 60 locations across Canada, and the scope has widened as well. In addition to simply handing out shoes, the Bio

Ped team also does gait analysis and a biomedical exam, and a pair of orthotic inserts. The donated shoes were donated by shoe suppliers such as Saucony, as well as from some patients who had donated their gentlyused shoes. Carpenter and Battistel said the day was a big success, as they saw several patients for gait issues and gave away more than 20 pairs of shoes in just one day.

More homeless finding shelter …continued from page A1

The Gateway of Hope shelter, run by the Salvation Army, has helped with its programs aimed at getting people to change their lives. “Gateway is very good at trying to establish a direction for people,” Holland said. But it still represents a temporary home, not a permanent one. Holland said the aging of much of Langley’s rental housing is also an issue. “There’s a lot of construction going on, but it’s not for rental,” he said. What is helping make things better for the homeless has been the partnership between many groups in Langley. Holland noted that, five years ago, there was little to no official government response to homelessness in Langley, and local churches took on the job themselves

of creating soup kitchens. Then the homelessness outreach workers were added. And a year ago, the Gateway of Hope was opened. “Langley works together as a community to try to do what’s best,” Holland noted. Overall homeless numbers in Metro Vancouver declined by one per cent, at 2,623 people living on the streets or in shelters. The drop in unsheltered homeless was not confined to Langley, but extended across the region, as a massive expansion of emergency shelters has taken effect in the past three years. Of the more than 2,600 homeless, just 731 reported sleeping on the streets, a 54 per cent decrease from 2008, when 1,574 people were unsheltered.

Top 10 woman arrested Langley RCMP helped collar one of the Lower Mainland’s most wanted car theft suspects. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Police have been looking for Stephanie Deschene for almost two months, but finally caught up with her in a Langley park on Thursday. Deschene, 20, was the only woman listed in the Top 10 Most Wanted Car Thieves list put together by IMPACT, the regional anti-car theft unit. On Thursday afternoon, there was

a break in at a Cloverdale home, said IMPACT spokesperson Sgt. Gord Elias. When the family came home and interrupted the burglary, the thief stole their mini-van and made off with it. The van was spotted by IMPACT officers, and the Air One police helicopter helped keep track of it. The van stopped when the suspect let her dog out of the van at a Langley park, where Deschene was arrested with the help of the Langley RCMP Street Crime Unit. Deschene is a suspect in the theft of several vehicles during the two-month period she was on the run from police. The car theft investigations are still ongoing.

Murder case verdict delayed Final resolution of a trial revolving around the death of a Langley man has been postponed. by Matthew Claxton

mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

The verdict in the trial of two Langley men accused of a killing two years ago has been delayed. Albert Jacob Jackman, 24, and Gregory Michael Barrett, 32, are charged with first-degree murder and manslaughter, respectively. They are accused of killing Kyle Barber,

who lived in a home at the corner of 244th Street and Fraser Highway. The trial heard from Barber’s girlfriend that the two accused burst in on Barber on March 28, 2009, suspecting Barber of stealing from them. The encounter turned violent, the court was told, and Barber was found dead outside his front window by police a short time later. Defence lawyers have suggested that the girlfriend’s memory was affected by drugs. The verdict was scheduled to be heard in court in New Westminster this week, but it has been delayed until 2 p.m., June 10, in the Vancouver courthouse.

Bribery is smoke Isn’t there a law against bribery? Apparently not when it’s a political exercise aimed at covering up blunders. B.C.’s government has announced that the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) will be cut by two percentage points, from 12 per cent down to 10 per cent, by July 1, 2014… IF B.C. voters agree not to discard the controversial – and highly unpopular – tax in the upcoming mail-in referendum… IF the current government is still in power by the time July 1, 2014, rolls around… And IF the government doesn’t decide it can’t afford to cut its tax base and postpones the reduction until better economic times. Let’s face it, we’re having an HST (many would call it an “anti-HST”) referendum next month precisely because the folks making the decisions in Victoria can’t be trusted to be honest with us about their intentions. It’s plain our government was less than honest with us about the HST at the outset. Plans to implement the tax were hidden from public view, when they weren’t masked by outright lies. That dishonesty is why Christy Clark is premier of B.C., instead of Gordon Campbell. And that dishonesty is the chief underpinning for opposition to the HST. Knocking two percentage points off the tax is unlikely to take the bad taste out of the mouths of B.C. residents who were forced to eat it in the first place. What happens if the HST is killed? How do we repay the federal government’s $1.6 billion bribe to implement the HST? And if the HST is cut to 10 per cent, what is the real remaining cost to taxpayers? Unfortunately, the current government’s attempt at bribery will only put up a smokescreen around the issue of whether or not the HST should be abandoned in the June 24 referendum (actually more like a mail-in survey). It will remind voters of the dishonesty that brought us the tax in the first place, instead of helping us focus on the real pros and cons of keeping or discarding the HST. – B.G.

Respect lacking at meeting

rebutted by an “official” in such a manner as she was, insulting the girl, her parents, and others at the meeting. For the official to pass the rebuttal off as “only a joke” just adds insult to injury. Obviously, she was not taking the public’s concerns seriously. How can we expect respect from our youth, when we have behaviour like this from an adult official who shows no respect towards a young girl’s concern? How the girl was treated will no doubt be in her young mind for years to come. Shame! Norm Iveson, Langley Township [Note: A fuller version of this letter is online at www.langleyadvance.com.]

Federal politics

PM strategy aimed at new senate

Dear Editor, Although all the statements made by Shane Dyson [Hypocrisy appointed, May 19 Letters, Langley Advance] would seem appropriate, some clarification of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s recent senate appointments is required. To the best of my know-

ledge, PM Harper is still in favour of senate reform and the establishment of a “Triple E Senate”: elected, equal, and effective. To date, he has not been able to pass any legislation to effect this change as, since becoming prime minister, the Conservatives have not had a majority in either

Environment

Green cans expensive error

Dear Editor, The notice we originally received introducing Langley Township’s “greencan” program said, “Your Green Can must be 80 L maximum and weigh less than 20 kg (44 lbs) when filled.” I do not put out yard trimmings. The “greencan” includes all the other stuff such as kitchen waste, etc. We have lots of racoons in our Brookswood area. I, like others, went out and bought a lockable Orbis container which is 44 L – certainly less than the 80 L max and 20 kg, it cost around $30. The notice I received when my green can was picked up indicates I cannot use this container, so all my food scraps and other acceptable stuff goes back in my regular garbage. But I also want the Township to buy my Orbis can, as this is the Township’s error. Sierra Waste does not want to be dealing with locked, attached lids. I see the Township’s web page noting the unacceptable containers, but that was not there when we got the original information notice. I was told the retailer will take them back, which highly doubt, as it has been filled with food waste for the past two weeks, and frankly, I don’t think they should have to, as this is the Township’s error, not their. parliament or the senate. The Liberals would defeat any such bill, as the last thing they want is democratic senate. They have used the “pork barrel” senate for years to appoint their friends and ensure their legislation is passed. Harper now has a majority in both Houses, so I believe we will see, in the future, legislation to have elected senators who are sent to Ottawa by the citizens in each province. Harper knows the Liberals will have great difficulty opposing this legislation, considering the fuss they have made over his recent appointments. I believe Harper’s recent senate appointments are part of a plan to get a democratic senate, with the Liberals forced to reverse their opposition to the idea. In the past, senate members were appointed for life, but they are now appointed to eight-year terms. As a result, it may take several years to get the senate we need in Canada. However, I also believe the senate will vote to get rid of itself once the required amendments are made to our constitution. Eric J. Bysouth, Langley

AIRING ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION A normal tire leaks about 0.5–1.0 pound per square inch (PSI) per month. Moreover, as the temperature outside changes, so does the pressure in the tires. It pays, then, to regularly check your tires’ air pressure. Merely eyeballing the tire will not work because it is impossible to discern low pressure just by looking at the tire, even one that is under-inflated by 5 PSI. Some tires have stiffer sidewalls that make tires appear to be properly inflated when they are not. A monthly check of the air pressure in your tires can pay big dividends in terms of improved fuel economy and driving comfort. While you’re at it, inspect the sidewalls for cuts or bulges, and the tread for uneven wear. Your tires are vital to the performance of your vehicle. At the first sign of uneven wear or other unusual characteristics, we recommend that you seek professional automotive care by coming to PRECISION AUTO SERVICE, located at 101–22575 Fraser Highway. We have a staff of technicians who are qualified to work on your vehicle and care about your car’s needs. If you have automotive issues that need to be resolved, call 604-530-9394. Tip: When a tire is inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure, it will extend its load-carrying capacity and stabilize handling, and the tires will run cooler at speed. The recommended pressure can usually be found on a sticker on the driver’s door or in the glove box, not on the side of the tire.

Dear Editor, These are comments of a near-70-yearold. Call me an old fashioned fuddy-duddy, if you wish. As young persons, we were taught to respect our elders. Further, we were also taught that respect was not a given, but had to be earned. The flip side was, if a young person had a genuine concern, then that concern should be respected. However, it seems some officials see themselves to be above this simple rule – or don’t take their position seriously. I find it inexcusable when a young person has the courage to stand up in a public meeting to speak to her concerns, only to be

Dear Editor, I read with some surprise your vitriolic attack on the prime minister [Surprises not surprising at all, May 24 Odd Thoughts, Langley Advance]. Perhaps it is your usual tone and slant, but I think you do a real disservice to the reading public to allow yourself the licence to voice what is evidently your own political conviction and water-cooler negativity. Do you exercise your political convictions by working in the trenches for the party of your choice, or do you prefer to just take pot-shots from your bully pulpit? My concern is that columnists and frustrated editors often attempt to gather a crowd through the use of strong opinion, negatively expressed – and then write about

EXPANDED SERVICES IMPROVE RECOVERY AND QUALITY OF LIFE FOR HEART AND LUNG PATIENTS

“The goal is to give patients the tools needed to control their health, so it doesn’t control them.” - Claire Prentice, Nurse Coordinator, Cardiac Programs, Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre

PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE Get a sneak peek inside the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, located at the corner of 140th Street and Fraser Highway in Surrey, by joining us at our public open house Monday, May 30 from 3pm – 7pm. For more details go to www.fraserhealth.ca Individuals with heart and lung conditions will find support and resources to help them enjoy life again, starting June 7 at the new Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre. The new Outpatient Centre will offer increased access to rehabilitation, education, exercise, diagnostic and other services through specialized heart and lung clinics and other programs to assist patients in better management of chronic health conditions. Returning to a Healthy Heart Patients who have experienced a heart attack can get back on the road to recovery through the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention Program, which is expanding with its move to the Pattison Outpatient Centre from Surrey Memorial Hospital. The program focuses on education, counselling, peer support, stress management and exercise. Services include a nine-week education series offered in English and Punjabi. An expanded exercise program with heart monitoring is also available to patients referred by a physician. “We empower patients to manage their chronic disease through lifestyle choices. The program enhances their knowledge and boosts their confidence,” said Claire Prentice, nurse coordinator for the heart programs. “The goal is to give patients the tools needed to control their health, so it doesn’t control them.”

Patients who’ve had a recent cardiac event will be referred to the rehab program from surrounding hospitals. Many referrals will also come from the on-site Heart Health Clinic, which is doubling its capacity from its former space at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The Heart Health Clinic is made up of a multi-disciplinary team including a cardiologist, nurse – and now a dietician and pharmacist – that will diagnose patients and help them manage their heart failure condition. The team will assist patients with medication, self management of lifestyle changes and emotional support for patients and their families. Within the Fraser Health region, the Heart Health Clinic will be one of three regional centres for complex heart failure care. Better Management of Lung Conditions Patients with diagnosed and stable chronic lung disease (such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) can be referred by their family physician to the Lung Rehabilitation Program, where a six-week lecture series teaches patients how to manage their condition. A companion exercise program helps patients gain stamina and develop a fitness regime. “The focus is to help people manage their disease to prevent flare-ups, and learn how to manage the flare-ups that do occur so they can avoid the emergency room,” said Jessica Erzinger, a respiratory therapist and clinical supervisor for the lung programs at the Pattison Outpatient Centre.

“It’s about improving quality of life for people. Folks who couldn’t take their grandkids to the zoo are now able to do that. People who couldn’t take their dog around the block are now going for walks. Some people who have gone through our program have even started dancing again!” The rehab program, which is also doubling its capacity in the new space at the Pattison Outpatient Centre, is part of a trio of lung services that patients can be referred to by their physician. This includes a lung diagnostic program (the largest in Fraser Health) as well as an expanded Lung Health Clinic, where a respirologist and respiratory therapist will provide diagnosis, management support and referrals for suspected or complex cases. Seamless Care Because the Pattison Outpatient Centre brings together a wide variety of disciplines, lung and heart patients will be able to address other health concerns – such as mobility, diabetes, mental health or other issues – in the same place, and often during the same visit. If you or a family member could benefit from the lung or heart programs at the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre please talk to your family physician. For more information call the Heart Health programs at 604-582-4584, the Lung Health programs at 604-582-4565 or email feedback@fraserhealth.ca.

Fraser Health believes you deserve the best health care. And Jim Pattison agrees. Give to the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation today and he will generously match your gift. Donate now at www.smhfoundation.com

Sunrise Langley Rotarian Jack Morrison and his wife Marg sold reams of 50/50 tickets during last year’s Tip ‘n Taste event while guests enjoyed sampling different beers and mingling.

Rotary fundraiser

Hoping hockey doesn’t derail event

A number of local businesses, including breweries, wineries, and eateries, will be at Tip ‘n Taste. by Roxanne Hooper

rhooper@langleyadvance.com

By adding a few wines, extending the hours, and offering discounts for bulk ticket buys, Rotarians hope to raise even more for kids at risk in Langley this year. Tip ’n Taste is an annual Rotary event that has become synonymous with sampling brew and socializing with friends. But moreover, this popular evening shindig – which last year raised about $20,000 for charity – is a fundraiser. Fun and fundraising seem to be an unbeatable combination for the three Langley Rotary Clubs that are once again joining forces to host this tasting event at the Coast Hotel and Convention Centre on Saturday, June 4. In addition to Aldergrove’s own Dead Frog Brewery returning to be part of this year’s event, Langley Sunrise Rotarian John Dance announced that Domaine de Chaberton winery in South Langley

Aldergrove’s own Dead Frog Brewery will once again be part of the annual Tip ‘n Taste fundraising event on Saturday, June 4. is on board this year, as well as a few other wine displays. With a total of 28 breweries (each displaying a few beers or summer drinks such as coolers and ciders) and wine displays, six restaurants offering samples, and a live entertainment from Brett Wade, Dance is confident this year’s event will again attract between 600 and 800 people. But that’s provided, of course, there isn’t a hockey game on that night. If there is a NHL playoff game on June 4, Dance vows to snag a few televisions to ensure participant viewing. While the Tip ’n Taste allows guests

to sample a variety of different and unique beers “they might not know about,” Dance said it’s the charity aspect that has prompted his involvement through the years. He likes to see the money going to special initiatives, the Boys and Girls Club, and other programs aimed at helping local at-risk children. That’s why he’s been willing, over the past five years as beverage chair for the event, to spend the better part of the year hunting down and securing new breweries and distributors to participate. “The number one reason for most people to come seems to be to sample different kinds of beer, just like those popular wine festivals,” he said. But, for others like him, this is more about the fraternizing and friendship. “When I was younger, I used to drink my share of beer,” Dance said. “But now, in my older years, I’m nursing drinks a lot more.” Tickets for Tip ’n Taste are $30 in advance from Langley Rotarians or online at wwwtipntaste.com, with a discounted rate of $250 for 10 tickets. A limited number of tickets are expected be available at the door, but the price is $35 each.

PATIO COVERS ON SALE!

Here’s a neat new idea – at least new to me – that’s being floated locally by Envision Financial to teach our youngsters about business through a very interactive and engaging initiative. I don’t know if there can ever be enough done to mentor and help budding entrepreneurs realize their dream of owning and operating their own business. Admittedly, entrepreneurship is not for everyone. But I fear, if we don’t foster the drive and spirit in the younger generations, then it will only be large corporations that run the future business world. I’m one for believing there has to be a strong blending, and that’s why I hailed the news of PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs. The program, sponsored by Envision, is active in five local elementaries already, and is being showcased to my old elementary alma mater – Wix-Brown Elementary – late this week. PowerPlay challenges students to start their own businesses. They each identify a need in the marketplace and create a business plan to effectively market their product. Then, they’re given a chance to sell their products at a Young Entrepreneur Show attended by the school community. WixBrown, for instance, is hosting its event Friday afternoon – but I’m sorry to tell you it’s not open to the public. I might try to stop in, though (as media). What caught my attention most about the description of these showcase session is the fact that after selling their wares, the kids must decide how to spend any profits, ensuring that a portion is donated to a charity of their choosing – that’s just good business practices and I’m elated to see it being fostered early in life. “This program is important because it teaches us to be more independent and to make our own decisions.” That’s how one Grade 6er at Langley Meadows Community School described PowerPlay, which I’m told will be expanding to more local schools this September. • More online at www.langleyadvance.com, click “News”

Two of Langley’s biggest providers of social services are merging into one organization. The Family and Youth Services Society (FAYSS) and Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services (ANS) are joining forces permanently. FAYSS will essentially be merged into ANS, which will add a few FAYSS members to its governing board. This will lead to ANS’s annual general meeting in September, which may see the merged groups adopt a new name. Discussions to bring the two groups together started in 2010, said Kim Prokopchuk, ANS board president. “The boards had developed a relationship,” she said. They’d noticed that, while they had similar missions, they focused on different areas. ANS works more on prevention throughout the Langleys, while FAYSS does more intervention work. One group works largely with young children, the other with teens and young adults. So they had little overlap, said FAYSS board president Jeremy Lyndon. “That’s partially why it’s such a good fit,” he said. It means the new organization will be able to work with the same children for years at a time, without passing a baton to another agency, and will allow administrative savings without the need to cut staff or combine positions when it comes to service. “Which means more money for kids and programs,” said Lyndon. It also means more funding stability. The two societies each get some funding from the provincial government, as well as grants and federal dollars. Merging will leave them less dependent on any one grant or donation. Prokopchuk said there were other options, but most would have involved joining regional groups. Both FAYSS and ANS want to provide services for Langley. “There’s a uniqueness to the Langleys that I’ve not seen in many other parts of the Fraser Valley,” Prokopchuk said. The new group wants to maintain that strong tradition. The new group will have about 36 employees, some full time and some part time, and a $1.7 million budget. Lynne Topham will be executive director. She has overseen day-to-day operations of ANS for many years. Lyndon and Prokopchuk both said the partnership’s goal is to do better for the kids they serve.

ne of Canada’s only Journey tribute bands is going to be rocking the Cascades Casino next weekend, paying homage to one of the biggest American rock bands of the 20th century. Based out of Vancouver, the Don’t Stop band presents an impressive swath of songs from Journey’s heyday in the 1970s and ’80s, including the local band’s namesake song Don’t Stop Believin’. The tribute band brings to life Journey’s power ballads like Open Arms and Still They Ride, explained show promoter Rob Warwick of Rock.It Boy Entertainment. DontStopTribute.com. Journey started in San Francisco in the early 1970s, made up of several former members of a band called Santana. While that group went through several ups and down, resurrecting and disbanding a few times, their music has lived on in

Questions & Answers

Shades of beauty “Can you give me some advice on what plants to put on the north side of my house. It gets some sunlight but a lot of shade too. I need ideas of some pretty plants that don’t need a lot of sun. I do not like evergreen bushes or trees.

H

Alison J., via email eucheras are available in many beautiful leaf colours, and the foliage remains throughout winter. They’re very hardy and enjoy shade. Some have pretty flowers, too, but with many, the leaves are the main attraction. Many ground-covers handle shade well, including epimediums, bugleweed (Ajuga reptans), and violets – but ground-covers need a firm hand and a sharp spade to stop them from over-running weaker plants. Primroses love shade and increase discreetly when happy. Alpine strawberries (the smaller, runnerless type) also grow well in partial shade and even fruit well there. One of the most striking shade-dwellers is pulmonaria, which not only has bright blue flowers (which open pink), but leaves that in various cultivars vary from silver-spotted to totally silver. Medium-tall shade-lovers include columbines, which if allowed to self-seed, produce flowers of many different hues. Hellebores have a very long flowering period in spring, and so does the blue-flowered brunnera. Some brunneras have stunningly-beautiful leaves, such as the form ‘Jack Frost.’ Bergenias also do well in shade. They produce fat heads of pink or white flowers in very early spring. Their evergreen leaves often develop reddish shades in

winter. They are rugged plants that slowly spread and can cover large areas. In summer shade, astilbes produce plume-like flowerheads, usually in white, pink, or red. Heights can vary from a metre to very dwarf. For brightness in spring, the yellow daisy flowers of doronicums are a standout. Other easy shade-lovers include valerian, foxgloves, and Fuchsia magellanica, the old-fashioned hardy one with small single flowers in magenta and deep purple. If you live near the sea, you may be able to overwinter so-called ‘hardy’ double-flowered fuchsias such as ‘Dollar Princess’ or ‘Santa Claus.’ But it’s the species Fuchsia magellanica that comes through severe winters in southwest B.C. Typically, it dies back to ground level then shoots up in spring. Hummingbirds love it. Dogwoods and ‘Cornelian Cherry’ (Cornus mas) can tolerate some shade. Cornus mas has a cloud of yellow flowers in early spring and red berries later. Kerria is a upright, suckering shrub which produces double (or single) yellow flowers and stems which remain bright green through winter.

Dear Anne,

“Is this a good time to move my calla lily to a spot in the garden?”

N. Howden ow that the nights are frost-free, this is a perfect time to move your calla lily into the garden. It would do best in a warm, sunny spot that can be kept quite moist. In coastal gardens and on sunny walls in Vancouver, calla lilies can do very well, and even over-winter if they are mulched to help them survive cold temperatures once frost and snow season

Senior A lacrosse

WLA cracks down following melee by Troy Landreville sports@langleyadvance.com

When it comes to engaging with fans, there is a line players simply should not cross. Well, on the surface, a pair of Langley Thunder players didn’t just cross that line, they bounded over it during a Western Lacrosse Association game Sunday at Planet Ice Maple Ridge. Late in the second period of the Thunder’s 9-6 loss to the host Maple Ridge Burrards, Langley’s Steve Hay tussled with a troublemaking fan in the corridor. Hay, in the sin bin for roughing at the time, was assessed a game misconduct for leaving the penalty bench. The Thunder’s Rob Van Beek was also involved. Prior to the altercation, Van Beek was handed simultaneous checking-from-behind and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties by the referee. Sparking the incident was a pair of belligerent fans who taunted Hay and Van Beek as they sat in the penalty box. The Thunder teammates responded by perching on the edge of the inside boards of the

penalty box and leaning over the glass to confront the fans. Van Beek aggressively swung his stick, twice, at the antagonists. Thunder general manager Gerry Van Beek (Rob’s dad) stepped in as a peacemaker and a melee ensued. Hay had seen enough. He quickly made his way behind the penalty bench and got into a physical altercation with a fan. Security promptly collared the two fans before forcefully escorting them out of the building. Gerry Van Beek said he could see the scene unfolding and because of the sequence of events, he “could not see their interaction turning into anything good. I wanted to remove the people from the area.” “I’m fine,” Gerry Van Beek added. “The one guy took a swing at me and didn’t hit me. I didn’t want it to escalate.” The WLA came down hard on the two Thunder players involved: Hay was slapped with a fourgame

suspension while Rob Van Beek faces a two-game ban. “Those guys [the fans] caused the problem,” Gerry Van Beek said. “It was unfortunate our guys were suspended as a result of it. We learn from those things” Thunder head coach Rod Jensen said leaving the playing surface to get involved with fans is not acceptable, but noted that Hay felt Langley supporters were in a predicament, so he tried to help them. “If the two guys jumped in the penalty box, it would have been a different story,” Jensen added. As far as how the game went, discipline and penalty killing stung the Thunder. The Burrards scored a trio of powerplay goals in the first period and led 4-0 heading into the second frame.

Chiefs’ deal done The BCHL is returning to Chilliwack and former Langley Chiefs head coach Harvey Smyl is the relocated team’s part-owner. by Tyler Olsen

Postmedia Network Inc.

Chilliwack hockey fans have another team to cheer for. The British Columbia Hockey League board of governors has unanimously approved the sale of the Quesnel Millionaires and the franchise’s relocation of the team to Chilliwack. The new ownership group includes Moray Keith, Jim Bond and, crucially, Harvey Smyl. “I’m very happy to have the great support of the BCHL board of governors and that they’d vote unanimously to bring Chilliwack back into our league,” said board chairman Darcy Rota in a league press release. “There are still some points that need to be cleared up before it’s official but we’re sure that will happen very soon.”

The franchise is expected to assume the name the Chiefs, although nothing has yet been announced. The Chiefs will play in the BCHL’s Interior Conference. Alignment will follow the next year, according to the league. The league says a conference call between the new owners, the BCHL and BC Hockey is scheduled for June 7, after which the sale will be official. It had not been clear before Tuesday what role, if any, Smyl – who coached the Langley Chiefs, but who still lives in Chilliwack – would play in a new BCHL franchise. But his role in the team’s ownership structure paves the way for the muchloved coach to again step behind the bench of a new Chilliwack Chiefs squad. – Tyler Olsen is a reporter with the Chilliwack Times

Langley golfer Sue Kim is headed to the U.S. Women’s Open in early July. A former junior star who recently turned pro, Kim qualified Monday for the biggest tournament in women’s golf. Kim, who won her B.C. Junior Girls titles in 2005 and 2008, survived a four-hole playoff to earn the third and final spot from that qualifier.

Kim rebounded from an 83 in her first round to shoot the only subpar round of the event, a one-under 71, in her second round to get into the playoff. She beat Surrey’s Taylor Kim and Kendall Prince of Lake Oswego, Ore., in that playoff. “I just played so steady that second 18,” said Kim, who is a rookie on the LPGA Futures Tour. “My coach kept telling me I could do it, that I had the game. And I guess I got my confidence back. I am very excited, but now I am going to have to practice my butt off to get ready for the U.S. Open.” The U.S. Women’s Open goes July 7-10 at The Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Burrards’ power play stings Thunder twice and added a pair of assists for the Thunder in a losing effort. Thunder 13, Victoria Shamrocks 13 In the Thunder’s season opener Friday in Victoria, the visitors scored back-toback overtime goals off the sticks of Iannucci and Kyle McEwen to earn a 13-13 tie with the Shamrocks. It was an even game throughout, with the Thunder leading 5-4 after the first period and 8-7 after 40 minutes of play. In the third period, the Thunder led 11-9 before the Shamrocks scored twice in the final two minutes of regulation to tie the score at 11-11. Victoria scored the first two goals of overtime before

The Burrards ended up going 6-11 with the man advantage to win by a threegoal margin. “Sunday night was not great from the get-go,” Jensen said. “We have to stay out of the penalty box, whether they [the players] think the penalties were bad and not warranted, or not.” The Thunder battled back in the second period and trailed 7-5 at one point in the third frame before Maple Ridge’s powerplay unit went back to work, striking paydirt twice to make it 9-5. Langley sniper Athan Iannucci rounded out the game’s scoring with 59 seconds to go in the third period. Kerry Susheski scored

the Thunder mounted a rally of its own. “We showed some ‘oomph’ getting back into the game but it was an even game all the way through,” Jensen said. Patrick Saunders with a hat trick, Andrew Potter (two goals, four assists), Iannucci (two goals, three assists), Dan Williams (two goals, two assists) and Alex Turner (a goal and two assists) had big nights offensively for the Thunder. ••• The Thunder played their 2011 home opener Wednesday versus the Coquitlam Adanacs at the Langley Events Centre. Results were not available due to Wednesday afternoon press deadlines.

Three local teams won medals.

Langley Minor Lacrosse teams were well represented at the New Westminster May Day Hyack Lacrosse Tournament. Local bantam squads were entered into the A2, B, and C divisions at the tournament. Langley Thunder A2 faced its nemesis Vancouver Burrards for the bronze. Both teams had previous wins against each other. Langley’s 13- and 14-year-old boys dominated on loose balls and faceoffs on their way to a 10-3 victory. This game was highlighted with a stellar performance by Zach Van de Leur who netted four goals for Langley. Coach Brock Rose coyly didn’t care

to mention “execution of play” or “trusting the game plan”; strategies which helped the team to victory. Comic relief went to goalie Roman Rose, desperately trying to catch his feet up with the rest of his body while running off the lacrosse floor with a mound of goalie gear, on a delayed penalty call. More seriously was his stoppage of all the shots, many of the sensational variety that gave Thunder the strength to push harder. All three Langley Thunder teams had solid placings, taking bronze in the A2 and B divisions with the C team going into two overtime rounds to take silver.

Const. Hayden Willems called his partners to report a distracted driver near the corner of Fraser Highway and Highway 10.

ICBC, police hit distractions Mounties were watching for distracted driving on Langley’s roads this week. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Const. Hayden Willems acted as a spotter on Wednesday morning. The officer, in plainclothes and plain sight, stood at the corner of Highway 10 and Fraser Highway near Langley’s Willowbrook Mall, watching for distracted drivers. When he spotted one, he spoke into the radio pinned to his coat collar, and RCMP officers posted a few hundred yards down the road pounced. On Wednesday morning, Willems said he’d seen a wide variety of offenses worthy of being pulled over – talking on a cell phone, texting while driving,

driving without a seat belt, running red lights. From his position, he can see everything a distracted driver does, he said, down to the brand of cell phone they’re texting on. While some drivers clearly noticed his microphone, and the wire running from his collar to his earpiece, the distracted ones are far too busy to look up. The crackdown, with the help of both local RCMP and Auxiliary officers, is part of an ICBC campaign against distracted driving. “Driving is one of the most complicated things that we do,” said Leanne Cassap, an ICBC road safety coordinator. Some drivers frequently do unsafe behaviours while behind the wheel, Cassap said. Following too closely, driving too fast, and improper passing are common. Yet drivers don’t realize such behaviours make crashing more likely.

Broderick MacKinnon-Westrop hasn’t gone as far as some with his Langley Advance, but Mom Angela might have thought she was heading for the Twilight Zone when he was five weeks old and his doppleganger – a ventriloquist’s dummy – appeared on the front page of the March 30, 2010, edition. Broderick is no stranger to coincidence. The youngest of seven kids, he was born on Feb. 23 – both his brother Alexander’s and his grandfather Malcolm McKinnon’s birthday.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Cancer June 21-July 22: The weeks ahead emphasize quietude, contemplation, solitude, lowered energy, particularly this Wednesday/ Thursday. Despite this, however, your social and optimistic side remains strong – especially Sunday to Tuesday. Your psychic and spiritual side emerges – so, hopefully, does your charitable side. This is a good time to contemplate your plans for the future, especially Sunday to Tuesday. June 4 begins 12 months of increased socializing, especially in your work environment. You might not feel the full effect of this until your birthday onward. Your energy bounces back Friday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The emphasis lies on wish fulfillment, social delights, light, friendly romance, optimism, the joy of living! Be ambitious Sunday to Tuesday. Soon (Saturday) you begin 12 months of super career luck. You’ll find bosses, parents and VIPs are more open to your ideas, willing to give you a boost up the ladder. Your creative, romantic and pleasure-loving side can help promote you and your ambitions. Midweek’s for social joys, entertainment and romance. Issue invitations. But retreat Friday/ Saturday – conditions are unstable Friday. Humour a “pushy” higher-up – until late June. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The weeks ahead bring pressure to perform and opportunities to enhance your status or prestige. Your career, relations with higher-ups and ambitions will occupy you. Until June 21, you might invest in a foreign country or international fund, etc. For this same three weeks, avoid legal hassles. Pay attention to Sunday through Tuesday – days when your mind will naturally drift toward the “larger questions,” toward international events, higher learning, compassion for all, and gentle love. This entire zone will be very luckily brought into prominence this June to next (2012).

Aries March 21 - April 19: Letters, emails, reports, short literature, calls, visits, short trips, errands, paperwork – these fill your life, especially midweek. The week is busy but not terribly important. Money themes continue, mostly good ones. Money might really rush toward you now to June 21 – but beware, you could spend it just as swiftly, or spend even more than comes. Bank it, be tight-fisted! Saturday (June 4) begins a year of grand money luck, especially in earnings and selling items. (Early hints of this Sunday/Monday, when all’s well in dollar-land.) Focus on home, children Friday/Saturday. Taurus April 20-May 20: The weeks ahead feature money, earnings and spending, possessions, memory, rote learning, and sensuality. All these, by June 4 onward will “tweak” or more deeply, give birth to, significant and beneficial “heavy money” situations. Heavy money = investments, mortgages, financial partnerships, dealings with other people’s money, inheritance: generally any money that is big, shared and intended to grow. (E.g., a car will not grow in value, but land often does.) Your charm and magnetism soar Sunday/Monday: impress someone! Money, midweek – beware a false idea. Speak humbly Friday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Congratulate yourself – you’re on top, winning! Your energy and charisma are climbing (and will increase more next week). Impress someone, seek attention, start significant projects, tackle formerly daunting tasks. Rest and plan and deal with government or head office Sunday-Tuesday.Then plunge into brave action Tuesday eve to Thursday. You might need to choose between your personal drives and a career/reputation situation. Either choice is OK: base it on your stage of life. Be cautious with money Friday: spend Saturday. Saturday begins 12 months of relative quietude: be patient.

May 29 - June 4, 2011

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: A mellow, understanding mood flows over you this week and the next two (especially this midweek). Study abstract subjects, religion, philosophy – any higher learning – or to write, travel afar or handle legal matters. You might meet love. Sunday to Tuesday contains mysteries – look beneath surface appearances. Your sexual and financial instincts awaken. It’s a superb time to go for a health diagnostic, change your lifestyle, or make a commitment. All these things (from mysteries to sex to finances) face huge luck from June 4 to mid-2012. Your life is about to change! Caution Friday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Late May and June draw you into life’s depths. Mysteries, secrets, large financial manoeuvres, investments, sexual urges, lifestyle commitments draw you, especially midweek. Study this area for a clue to fortunate action, projects in the year-long phase between June 2012 and July 2013. Until then, though, play this area lightly. (Actually, if you’re planning that far ahead, mark July/August of 2012 as “highly questionable.”) Your true luck, for the immediate 12 months ahead, begins this Saturday: you’ll find it in relationships of every stripe. You might relocate, or marry! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The emphasis lies on relationships, relocation, agreements, contracts, negotiation, opportunities, competition, challenge, opposition, litigation, especially midweek. You’ll receive the positive side of these if you’re diplomatic, eager to please and a team-player. The negative needs no explanation. But one note: in general, it’s better not to vigorously pursue either side, now to August 2012. A Gemini might play a key role. You’ll accomplish a lot of work Sunday/Monday. Work will expand strongly now to mid-2012. Learn to relax! Invest or offer intimacy Saturday, NOT Friday!

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Lots of work faces you, especially midweek, when a new chore could begin. Better plunge in these few weeks, as a major romantic, pleasure-oriented or “happy venture” phase begins very soon, and will last for 12 months. You’ll want to be relatively free of restricting duties by then. (In late June, a powerful relationship influence starts, bringing romantic urges to a tempting climax.) In fact, this romantic phase has already started, in minor ways. Sunday to Tuesday contain some tantalizing urges! Careful with relationships Friday. One affair might end, another start – soon. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The weeks ahead feature romance, creativity, pleasure, vacation, sports and games and successful risks. Something might start in a very small way in these areas midweek – something that can grow in future. But a lot of emphasis remains in your area of home, domesticity, security and children (especially early week). You have to avoid friction or sharp words here (or anywhere near a cafe or kitchen – watch cuts and burns, too) through June 20. On June 4, a year of luck begins in these areas: home, children, real estate, retirement, new beginnings. A new home? Caution Friday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The emphasis lies on your home, security, children, nourishment, on Mother Nature, retirement, endings and beginnings. A minor new phase or project might begin in these areas midweek. Usually this phase (late May to late June) creates a restful, sluggish mood designed to give you a mid-year rejuvenation. But this time a lot of errands, trips, visits, calls and paperwork keep you busy. June 4 starts a year in which your career will involve a lot of running around and communicating. Romance disappoints Friday, flows smoothly Saturday. One met before Friday isn’t compatible. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
