The Dog Days of Summer was so popular in 2010 that Metro Vancouver has decided to hold another canine-themed afternoon. From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. this Saturday, June 11 at Derby Reach Regional Park, there will be plenty of barking, sniffing and wagging at this dog-focused event. • More online

Frightful fans

Walnut Grove’s Rick Hunter front-yard display is sure to scare fans of the Boston Bruins. The die hard Canucks fan is also a lover of Halloween, and covers his front yard with ghouls every October. This year, he broke them out early to don a variety of Canucks Jerseys, flanking a tiny, weak skeleton clad in Boston’s colours. His neighbours have been enjoying getting pictures of the game-night displays, Hunter said.

Residents can find out if they’ve been heard by the Langley City and other groups behind the Roberts Bank Rail Corridor street and overpass projects. A public information meeting is June 14 at Nicomekl Elementary from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Residents have received notices saying the meeting is “to discuss how public input has been interpreted into the development of the proposed design,” said City engineering director Gary Vlieg.

Langley residents planning on heading for the big celebrations in Vancouver and Surrey should check out changes to the public transit schedule being made to accommodate the games. During game four on Wednesday night, Vancouver’s Georgia Street was closed between Homer and Richards for the new location of the Celebration Site. Transit users going to Rogers Arena or the Queen Elizabeth Theatre via SkyTrain Expo/ Millennium Line had to get off at Stadium-Chinatown Station or Granville Station and use the Dunsmuir Street exit. On game nights, spontaneous celebrations have been taking place in areas such as 72nd and Scott Road and 49th and Fraser. Others may start up in other locations and all of them may result in bus re-routes if roads are closed. Transit customers should follow TransLink on Twitter (@ translink) or sign up for transit alerts via its website (www. translink.ca) to get up-to-theminute service bulletins.

The neighbourhood falls in the Willoughby Elementary catchment. Despite the invitations to various levels of government, only some media attended. Routley parents have appeared as delegations at Langley Township and school board meetings to ask that the three-way land swap between the two and a developer not take place and that a school be built in their neighbourhood (around 70th Avenue and 198th Street).

Police and Langley residents gave a suspected thief reason to break into a sweat Tuesday, chasing him down after a midday break in. At about 1:30 p.m., a resident in the 23300 block of Old Yale Road arrived back home to find an unknown man walking out of the house, carrying a black travel case. She followed the suspect as he tried to run away, simultaneously calling the Langley RCMP, said Cpl. Holly Marks, speaking for the local Mounties.

The suspected thief headed into a wooded area. Officers quickly arrived and surrounded the green space. One of them spotted a man who matched the description of the suspect running south on 232nd Street. A passing driver stopped to give police more details on which way the suspect had headed. By the time officers found and arrested the man, he was sweating profusely, Marks said. The 21-year-old now faces a possible charge of breaking and entering. The man has no fixed address, Marks said.

Yoga day to help girls

A yoga session aims to enhance the lives of young women. by Matthew Claxton

mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

A discipline used for health and wellness will bring some benefits to young women in Langley this year. A yogathon was held at Langley Fine Arts School on June 4 to raise money for a girls conference. Janine Orlando, a school counsellor and yoga instructor, organized the event. She has spearheaded the girls conferences several times, first in 2008 when she was in Maple Ridge, and more recently in Langley.

More Photos Online

The conference is to be themed around “The Power of One,” Orlando said, referring to the famous quote attributed to Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Past girls conferences have worked with young women on a variety of issues, including introductory yoga classes, constructive problem solving, and self esteem issues. “It starts with each individual making a change,” Orlando said. Her yogathon saw more than two dozen participants spread their mats on a gym floor at Langley Fine Arts and follow the directions of four local instructors who donated their time.

Raymond Hoogland has been riding in the Fraser Valley Grape Escape for three years, but his reasons for riding have changed. Hoogland began by organizing a team at Langley’s Shark Club, which he was then managing. The annual Grape Escape, a twoday bike tour of Langley, draws hundreds who amble through the comPhotos munity, stopping at vineyards and Online wineries for tastings and snacks. For Hoogland, it was a chance to get involved and do something fun with his staff. After his first ride in June 2008, however, he met and began dating Heather. She has MS. “It became a passion after that,” Hoogland said of his future wife. Hoogland, now at Moxie’s, is still riding, but his team is now family and friends, as much as co-workers. The ride began at the Sandman Inn in Walnut Grove, and travelled up and down the community’s roads over two days. Riders had the choice of long or short routes depending on their level of fitness, and how long they wanted to spend in the saddle.

No class effort

At press time, the Vancouver Canucks were either on the verge of winning their first-ever Stanley Cup, or on the wrong end of a serious momentum swing. Either way, here’s hoping the Canucks and fellow finalist, the Boston Bruins, try to keep their emotions in check (as hard as that may be) and play with some form of etiquette – especially with record numbers of fans across North America watching them battle for “Lord Stanley’s Mug.” Here’s hoping fans won’t have to witness another chilling sight of a motionless player laying on the ice, his unblinking, open-eyed stare at the stadium lights a sure sign his brain had been whipped into scrambled eggs – the way Boston winger Nathan Horton looked after absorbing a hit that was way too late, way too high, from Canuck defenceman Aaron Rome (subsequently banned from competition for the rest of the series). Here’s hoping the term “finger food” will apply solely to game-time appetizers like chicken wings and jalapéno poppers, and not to opposing players’ digits. Here’s hoping the Boston players don’t stick their fingers into the mouths of their Vancouver adversaries in a classless attempt to entice them to take a nibble. Here’s hoping the post-whistle calf jabs, face-washes, and chest-bumps that have plagued the series so far fall by the wayside. The same rules apply for the fans. Here’s hoping a potential Canucks’ series loss won’t result in a repeat of the riot of ’94, when a lunatic fringe swarmed Vancouver’s Robson Street and created general mayhem, embarrassing the city, the province, and the fans who truly support their home team and the sport. Here’s hoping an identical scenario doesn’t play out if the Canucks happen to hoist the Stanley Cup on Friday, or if necessary, this Monday, or if the series stretches out to seven games, next Wednesday. Here’s hoping the Canucks and Bruins get back to playing some good, old-fashioned hard-nosed hockey. And may the best team win. – T.L.

Obituary

Blue tarps apt memorials

Dear Editor, Sometimes it’s the things that are missing from the Township of Langley that we too easily overlook – like the absence of blue tarps signalling leaky condos. Retired chief building inspector David Chesney made it his top priority to beef up the building code to go over and above the accepted requirements for a “pass,” to pretty much guarantee that leaky condos would not be built on his watch. Some builders didn’t like Chesney much. They’d call then Mayor John Scholtens and complain. When they admitted that it would cost an average of $75 a unit to comply, the mayor deferred to Chesney. On a tour through a leaky condo in Langley City, David showed me how the wallpaper in the lobby peeled back to reveal black mould; how the balconies sloped

inward, soaking the rugs and floors and making the units unlivable; how he could claw his fingers through a joist and present a handful of wet, soggy wood fibre as evidence of water infiltration; how stucco didn’t stick because it wasn’t allowed to cure between coats. Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, David Chesney died of cancer on May 30 at the age of 80. The service should not be more than an hour, he had requested. And it wasn’t. It was just long enough for the overflow crowd to consider the family man, the man of God – and the man the taxpayers of Langley Township should thank every time they see a blue tarp covering up a multitude of sins. BC Rail

Investigate

Dear Editor, Now that our premier has a seat in the Legislature, it is time to come clean. It is time to announce an independent, full public enquiry into the BC Rail scandal. It is a common allegation that Christy Clark was involved in this up to their eyeballs. How can she have any credibility with the people of B.C. until this is done? Christy must do the honorable thing… unless she has something to hide. The people of this province deserve no less. encroachment on our economy. B.C.’s move to the HST is a giant step in giving Canada to corporate control of all aspects of our lives. Eileen Spencer, Aldergrove

Dear Editor, Can we please get one thing straight on the HST? The government’s propaganda that all business love the HST is utter nonsense. I own my own business, and because I sell in all of Western Canada, with each province having different tax rates, the HST has been a nightmare. Even sillier is the notion that businesses are going to “pass on” the savings to consumers. Do people really believe that? Michael Belway, Langley Dear Editor, The issue is not whether the HST is a good thing or

not. The issue is the arrogance of this government, actually any government, to unceasingly spring tax increases on us without public consultation while they continue practising fiscal irresponsibility. Vote against it. Brian G. Wood, Langley Dear Editor, It is a tragedy that not enough owners of small businesses in B.C. do not challenge the pro-HST spin that is being put out by their nominal leaders. Consumers will be two billion dollars poorer with the HST, compared to the PST. That means small businesses, collectively, will be two billion dollars poorer. Dr. H. Spencer, Aldergrove [Note: Fuller versions of these letters and others on this topic are online at www.langleyadvance.com.]

Langley Township

Taxes reveal alien concept

Dear Editor, Our Township of Langley 2011 property taxes, compared to last year, increased by 13.45 per cent – which is just a bit higher than I remember estimated property tax increases to be. By contrast, the average Canadian wage increased four per cent last year. If deductions from the increase in that income are taken into account (i.e. income taxes) that means the maximum increase a person would have got would have actually been only 3.2 per cent. It seems that the idea of “living within your means” is an alien concept. I hope that your newspaper, in advance of the municipal elections, will publish the names of the councillors who voted for such an increase, so that I can vote accordingly. Dear Editor, I get the impression they don’t want us to understand too much about the HST. Why are the feds so willing and anxious to bribe us with $1.6 billion of our federal tax dollars? Is it because it gives them more control over the provinces? Now the Liberals have resorted to playing head games with the twisted psycho-babble referendum question: Yes means No, and No means Yes. Christy Clark already appears to be making big deficit blunderer Gordon Campbell look good. I can’t believe these people are in charge of our future and they want to be re-elected. Then we have the socialist NDP salivating for power to replace them. Roland Seguin, Langley

Even some die-hard Canuck fans came out to the Rotary Club Tip n’ Taste at More the Coast Hotel and Convention Centre Saturday night, glad to be able to show Photos support for the charity event while also Online taking in the Game 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs on a 72-inch television in the lobby. Admittedly, there were a lot fewer people in attendance at this year’s Tip n’ Taste. Last year’s event attracted more than 600, where Saturday’s event saw 400 tickets sold and only 300 people attend. About a third of those people showed up after the playoff hockey game, Truman said. And about 30 people arrived extra early to secure a seat to watch the game. The casino staff even brought in extra chairs to facilitate the game viewers. “It’s down from last year, but we

knew we were competing with the hockey game this year,” Truman said. “We’re just hoping for a later date next years, so we won’t be running into hockey season.” While the numbers of visitors and subsequently the money raised is down this year, Truman said he’s received feedback from vendors who appreciated having a little more time to spend explaining their products to the guests, and who have all vowed to return. • This story first appeared online at www.langleyadvance.com.

Beer and hockey proved to a winning combination Saturday night at the local Rotary Club Tip ‘n’ Taste at Coast Hotel and Convention Centre. While attendance for the beverage-tasting fundraiser was much lower than organizers wanted, they were still pleased with the turnout for the annual charity event that raises money for kids at risk in the Langleys, said chair David Truman, president of the Langley Rotary Club. It didn’t hurt that those in attendance could watch game two of the Stanley Cup playoffs on a 72-inch television screen set up in the upstairs lobby. It was fun to watch as patrons dashed into the ballroom to get a sample of beer, cooler, or wine and a bite to eat between breaks, scrambling to get back to their seat before play resumed. The annual fundraiser is hosted by three of the four Rotary Clubs in Langley, and Truman was optimistic the event will still generate more than $10,000 (about half of last year’s total) for various kids at risk programs supported by the different Rotary Clubs.

During the summer, lawn watering and other recreational uses can account for 50 per cent of home water use. As a general rule, watering your lawn “one inch one hour” per week is an adequate amount of time to keep your lawns healthy. If using a running hose to wash your car you can be wasting up to 400 litres of water. However, by using a bucket and a sponge with a trigger nozzle on the hose you can save 300 litres of that water. These nozzles are included in our outdoor water saving kit for $15, available at any recreation centre. Use sprinklers that produce large fat droplets of water. Sprinklers that finely spray water into the air quickly evaporate. Set sprinklers to water only your lawn. Omit any driveway/sidewalk watering. If water runs off your lawn easily, split your watering time into shorter periods to allow for better absorption. Adjust lawn mower to a higher setting. A taller lawn shades roots and holds soil moisture better than if coarsely clipped. Engineering Division 604.532.7300 enginfo@tol.ca

Those pesky Canucks games – they can be a little disruptive for nonhockey fans like me. But for those who are fans and who were intent on being at the reception for the relaunch of the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Walnut Grove next week, they’ll be glad to know dates have been changed to accommodate the Stanley Cup playoffs. General manager Jeff Leung of Holiday Inn actually thought he had his bases covered when originally planning the celebration. But due to the unexpected late start of the finals, it turned out the opening was going to fall on a game night – and that could not be. So revisiting the calendar, Leung announced the reception is happening next Tuesday, June 14 – when

Natural disasters. Peace-of-mind protection. With natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis devastating cities around the globe, it’s becoming more and more important that we understand the risks and take precautions. In B.C., its almost forest fire season - and we have seen firsthand the devastation these can cause to our belongings and homes. While it’s impossible to prevent a natural disaster, the guarantee of peace-of-mind protection should be expected from an insurance company. How will your insurance company respond if disaster strikes? There are some fundamental things your insurance company HOME should do:

Help to get you back on track. Depending on the extent of damage, you may need a team of tradespeople to help you restore your home. Though your insurance company may approve a certain amount of funds for restoration, you should still have the option to quote with a contractor of your choice. Or, if you prefer, your insurance company should provide the names of skilled professionals. The benefit of working with a local insurance company is that they will be able to give you qualified recommendations in your area.

INSURANCE OUTLOOK

INSURANCE

WITH Assist with the emergency. LORI TAYLOR In the event of a natural disaster, you should be able to contact your insurance company any time day or night. Once coverage is confirmed, they should assist by calling in professionals to help and arrange for items like humidifiers, or tarp for your roof, to help reduce further damage. Explain coverage details. Once an adjuster has spoken to you, or viewed your loss, your insurance company should explain to you what is and isn’t covered under the policy. They should also discuss repair or replacement of your contents to help you decide how to move forward with your claim. If a natural disaster renders your home uninhabitable and coverage allows, your insurance company should also provide options for alternate accommodations until it can be restored.

Keep you informed. You shouldn’t be kept guessing. From beginning to end, your insurance company should keep you updated on progress and possible delays so that you have the confidence of knowing when your home will return to normal.

there’s no game scheduled – instead of Wednesday. “After all we all know how important this series mean to our city,” he said. It’s been three years in the planning and a year-and-a-half of solid renovations, but the proverbial veil on the 88th Avenue facility will officially be lifted. Actually, the recently renovated 85-room hotel continued operating throughout the renos that was completed in April, and the reaction thus far from visitors has been astonishing, Leung said. In the process, every corner of the Walnut Grove facility, which was originally built in 1999, was renovated or remodeled – even Leung’s office. “We’re writing a new chapter for the Holiday Inn,” he said, noting that the makeover cost more than $3 million and included new furnishings, carpets, curtains, LCD televisions in each of the rooms. The facelift impacted the interior and exterior of the building, including tiling of every bathrooms, remodelling of the pool, sauna and

Aldila Boutique celebrating 6 years of style in Langley The Canadian family-owned business has 11 locations across Western Canada, all which sell brand names not found in department stores. It¹s a dilemma for many women: as they get older, they want a more mature fit in their clothes, but without compromising on style. At Aldila Boutique in Willowbrook Centre, the owners are always working to solve this dilemma, aiming to dress women over 30 in trendy clothes with flattering fits. We’re gaining more new customers as we focus on the sophisticated woman, said Elif Costello, an owner of the family-run business. This last spring we went to L.A. and tried to see if we could find some new things that other people [in the Lower Mainland] don’t carry. Aldila carries clothes from brand names like Joseph Ribkoff, Spanner and Sandwich, and jean brands Miraclebody and Not Your Daughter’s Jeans which have both been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Along with unique brands, Aldila’s elite customer service keeps women returning again and again. Our boutiques are really about one-on-one service and making sure the customer loves shopping with us, Costello said. We have customers that will come in and ask for staff by name. We want to make everyone feel comfortable. Aldila is celebrating 25 years

o stopping those Langley Players, who are still abuzz about the success of their last play, Lost in Yonkers, which won at the regional theatre competition and earning them a spot in next month’s provincials in Kamloops. The long-time thespian group is planning a series of encore fundraising productions of Yonkers later this month, but in the meantime, they’re already preparing for the next production. The audition call went out this week for five women for the fall show. Director Helen Embury is holding auditions next week, Monday and Tuesday, June 13 and 14, for women to share the stage in the John Murell production of Waiting for the Parade. The play, set in Calgary during the Second World War, features five women whose lives are profoundly affected by a war being waged across the ocean. “Waiting for the Parade is alternately dramatic, poignant, and funny, and also features some of the great songs made popular during the war years,” Embury said. Those interested in auditioning are asked to contact the director (hembury@ shaw.ca) to obtain a short monologue from the play as well as a list of songs, singing ability will be assessed for all characters both a capella and in harmony with a pianist accompanying songs taken from the play. Embury is looking for one woman who must be able to play late 40s or late 50s. The other four women are on various ages, between mid-20s and late 30s. To book an audition time, people are asked to email Leslie Gaudette at lgaudette@gmail.com. Headshots and resumes are also requested. Rehearsals will begin in August, and the production will run Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturday evenings – as well as matinees on Sundays – from Oct. 20 to Nov. 19 – with a possible holdover Nov. 24-26. The process started with motivational speaker Bruce Sellery meeting with community members in the spring to discuss finances and the psychology of money. The show’s goal is to open up a conversation among community members and get people to think about their role in a community’s success or failure, and even what people want to accomplish in their lives. an extra well-done piece.” So I asked her, “What do you enjoy?” She repeated, “Extra welldone,” with a sense of bewilderment. “If that’s what you enjoy,” I replied, “how is that the wrong way?” Many people get blackballed by a definition in the “culinary world.” The “textbook” doneness for red meat is medium-rare for optimal flavour, juiciness, and tenderness – a guideline, however, that is not meant to overrule personal preferences. If you don’t enjoy red meat medium-rare, then it is not the right way for you. As long as one tries new foods and preparation techniques, there should be nothing wrong with their final individual evaluation. Dear Chef Dez,

Recently, I went to a restaurant and ordered a well-done steak. The server advised me that the chef in the kitchen refused to cook my steak of choice to that degree of doneness. What is your opinion on this?

Peter F., Langley Dear Peter, Depending on the cut of steak, most restaurants will fulfill your request. Some, however, feel that for a top grade cut of beef,

cooking it well-done is a waste. It just dries out the optimal flavour and tenderness that a choice cut is expected to offer the consumer. I think the situation should have been handled differently. You should have been advised that the kitchen doesn’t recommend “well-done” for the selection of steak you made, and offer you a different cut. If at this point you still insisted on your original choice, then your request should have been honoured. I feel that, as professionals, it is our obligation to educate people on the culinary guidelines that we are trained in and to make appropriate suggestions. If, however, the consumer still chooses otherwise, that wish should be respected and his or her individuality recognized.

here are people who feel that their food preferences or knowledge may not reflect what is correct or up-to-date. That is completely understandable, as there is always an endless supply of information and techniques. But that does not mean anyone should be ashamed or denied the right to express their passion for this necessity in our lives. One of the many things I love about food and food preparation is that I never stop learning. I consider it one of “the arts,” like music or painting. Never can every musical note and lyric, colour and design, or food flavour combination be “used up.” It is impossible. No matter how much or little you know, you have preferences in your appreciation of this indulgent as well as essential medium. That individuality not only guides you to determine likes or dislikes, but defines you as who you are. Carving a baron of beef in a buffet line-up at a hotel many years ago, I was approached by an elderly woman with an empty plate. As always, I asked the level of doneness preferred. Looking nervous, she whispered, “I know it’s not the right way, but I prefer

Questions & answers

Ugly disease harmless “This is the third year we have had an azalea problem. It begins with swollen leaves on the new growth, progressing to white mold, and finally the leaves blacken and die. We have used a variety of fungicides and cut the azaleas back. The problem is mostly limited to 40-year-old azaleas of the same variety, but it has moved to some of the neighbouring azaleas. We are prepared to remove the diseased shrubs.”

“What is the best time to prune my clematis Vyvyan Pennell? Should I prune it in spring or fall, cut it down drastically or only by a certain amount. Is it too late to prune it this spring?”

Brian Cronkhite, via email

Y

our azalea problem sounds like leaf gall – a fungal disease that’s not uncommon in cold, wet weather. It’s actually harmless to the plant, though very ugly. It can be controlled organically by picking and garbaging or burning the affected leaves as soon as you see the infection. The pruning would have helped more had the weather been drier. Fungicide tends to be an endless and time-consuming solution, since you need very good coverage, under the leaves as well as over them. While the weather remains wet and cold, the

Valerie Ahwee, via email yvyan Pennell flowers on last year’s wood in spring, and flowers again in late summer, on new shoots. It is too late to prune, unless you don’t mind losing most or all of the blooms this year. By pruning now the new shoots may not mature quickly enough to produce any flowers, although they’ll be well positioned to give you lots of bloom next spring. People often simplify pruning this type of clematis by cutting everything down

to about 30 centimetres (12 inches) from the ground in late winter. The clematis will make masses of new shoots which will flower in late summer and early fall. But there is an alternative. In late winter next year, you could cut half the clematis shoots down to about 30 cm from the ground. Leave the remaining stems long enough to fit the support structure you have set aside for them, and cut each of the ends back to a healthy bud. The shoots that are cut down to 30 cm will make new growth that flowers later at the end of summer, and the older stems that are trimmed just enough to fit the trellis will flower in spring.

spraying may need to be done every month or so. Also, since our weather seems to be falling into a long-term pattern of very wet winters and springs, the problem may recur every year. Removing the azaleas would save a lot of work, and also remove a source of infection for the other azaleas. Dear Anne,

Langley Athletic FC is now a firstplace team. A 3-1 win over the Revolution Football Club from Surrey on Sunday, June 5 at McLeod Athletic Park (MAP) vaulted LAFC into first place in Group A of the United Soccer Leagues Super20 Northwest Division. The local boys will try to improve their record to a perfect 4-0 this Saturday when they host the Victoria Highlanders FC at MAP. Game time is 5 p.m. On Sunday, LAFC travels to Washington State for a date with Snohomish United.

Blaze hurler thrilled LAFC foils Revolution to be drafted by Jays

‘I can’t wait to start playing for them,’ says Tom Robson by Howard Tsumura

Postmedia Network Inc.

Tom Robson, come on down. Okay, okay, it didn’t go quite that way for the pitcher who on Tuesday became the first Canadian selected in this year’s Major League Baseball draft when the Toronto Blue Jays picked him in the fourth round, 139th overall. But it was close. “I was excited for today,” explained the 6’4” 210-pound right-hander. “And when they picked me, I was with my friends watching The Price Is Right. We had the draft going on the computer and The Price Is Right on the TV, and when we heard my name, we all started jumping up and down, screaming. I haven’t felt like this before. I have grown up watching the Blue Jays my whole life. I can’t wait to start playing for them.” A senior at Delta Secondary School and the ace of the staff of the B.C. Premier League’s Langley Blaze (2-2, 0.89 ERA), Robson was the highest rated Canadian player heading into the three-day selection meeting which continued today, Wednesday, June 8. He is also a member of the Canadian junior national team. For Robson, who had committed to play collegiately at Central Arizona junior college as a backup plan, the feeling that came with joining his favourite team was nothing shy of surreal. “The first person to call me with the news was the area scout, Jamie Lehman, who I

am close with,” Robson said of the Jays’ chief Canadian talent evaluator. “Next I got a call from the scouting director Andrew Tinnish, and then the last call I got was from [GM] Alex Anthopoulos, and that was pretty sweet. He said he hopes I’ll become a big-leaguer with them, and then he said he wants to get me signed as soon as possible and that he really wants to see me in a Blue Jays uniform.” Doug Mathieson, Robson’s head coach with the Blaze, describes an arsenal of pitches that Robson will have an opportunity to refine in a much more magnified environment. “He has a very clean, easy arm,” Mathieson said of Robson, who has 42 strikeouts in just under 24 innings of work this season. “He’s a big, tall very projectable right-hander with a 90-92 m.p.h fastball which has some run and sink on it, which is important. He has what I would call a solid curve ball and he has a good feel for his change-up.” ••• Dustin Houle decided two seasons ago that if he was going to make his baseball dreams come true, he had to make a move to the Lower Mainland from his home in the Penticton area. On Tuesday, the move paid off after the Milwaukee Brewers selected the third baseman/ catcher from the Blaze in the eighth round of the MLB draft, 251st overall. “It was an easy decision to leave, but it was tough leaving my friends and my family,” said Houle, a senior at Brookswood Secondary. continued on page A26…

Langley Athletic FC’s David Malamura celebrated with teammate Connor Jones after scoring against Surrey Sunday at McLeod Athletic Park. LAFC won 3-1.

Volleyball

Spartans suit up for national teams A pair of Trinity Western players will represent Canada this summer. Both of Canada’s women’s volleyball teams this year will have a Trinity Western University flavor. TWU setter Lauren O’Reilly Canada West rookie of the year and CIS allrookie team member Alicia Perrin will play middle for the senior B team that will compete at the FISU Games while Spartans setter Lauren O’Reilly, a Langley resident, will compete for Canada’s senior team that is looking to qualify for 2012

Olympic Games in London. While this will be first opportunity for Perrin to wear the red and white at the senior level, as she will represent Canada in China from Aug. 12Alicia Perrin from TWU 23 at the 2011 World Universiade Games in Shenzhen, China, for O’Reilly, this will be her third go-round with the senior team as she was the starting setter with Canada’s top unit last fall at the world championships. Last year, O’Reilly joined the Spartans after playing with Canada in the fall and, upon her return to Langley, helped Trinity Western to a CIS bronze medal.

ARTHRITIS

Pain free in 2 weeks!

This is what happened to me personally. After suffering for years I desperately tried everything, drugs, natural products, physiotherapy, acupuncture, magnets and nothing was of any real help. Finally I had relief in 2 weeks by taking shark cartilage that was specially processed to preserve the natural active ingredients. This is the kind we are now promoting. I realized then that there are over 50 million men and women that are battling the same illness and getting treatments that are not working well, otherwise we would not have this ongoing huge health problem. In the last 10 years we have helped tens of thousands of men and women to have less pain or no pain at all. This is a by-product of the food industry. No sharks are caught because of their bones/cartilage. Don’t let anybody #1 confuse you. Nick A. Jerch, President We have real EVIDENCE that it works. On our web site you find over 100’s of testimonials with full names and towns. All 100% true. Skeptics may call them. Here are some examples: ! Doctor suggested knee replacement after all his options failed with drugs and cortisone shots in knee and lower back. I recommend Bell Shark Cartilage to those millions suffering needlessly like I did for 40 years with arthritis in my knees. It's a shame that I was given drugs and injections all these years when a natural medicine could have spared me the endless torture day and night. Pat Laughlin, Coldwater, ON !My hip is 95% pain free. Pain killing drugs mask and Bell Shark Cartilage heals. Rebecca Hite, Oroville, CA!I tried another brand and pain came back. 2 weeks on Bell and pain is gone again. Gert Dupuis, Hanmer, ON!Cancelled knee replacement. I was in pain and limping. Have no more pain now. Can square dance for hours. Anton Melnychuk, Porcupine Plain, SK. We supply EVIDENCE!

Spartans excel at California tourney The Langley players enjoyed Disneyland, and a tournament championship.

The Langley Spartans had good reason to be happy at the Happiest Place On Earth. The collection of bantam-aged (13- and 14-year-old) hockey players recently returned home champions, after capturing gold in a tournament held near Disneyland, in Anaheim, California. During the week, the Spartans found a balance between hockey and amusement park rides. After winning their first three games, they faced a The Langley Spartans skated to an overtime victory team from San over a team from Las Vegas in the championship Diego in the final of a tournament in Anaheim, California. semifinals. A solid team effort earned the Spartans a shutout win and a spot in the finals. Their gold medal opponent, a team from Las Vegas, went into the third period with the lead from a first period goal. The two teams combined for five goals in the final frame, ending the period in a 3-3 deadlock. During the four-on-four overtime period, it only took 33 seconds for the Spartans to light the lamp and win the game, and the tournament championship. The Spartans are Cayden Birch, Trevor Crowe, Tanner Duy, Dylan Geiger, Wyatt Hicks, Noah Hillsdon, Jackson Kemmis, Peter Ko, Josh Redekop, Matthew Romero, Christian Svangtun, and Quinn Visram. The 10 skaters and two goalies trained extremely hard prior to the tourney, going through weekly endurance drills as well as off-ice core training over the past two months. Spartans coach Barry Hicks said he was very proud of each of his boys and “hoped they took the lessons learned with them back to their minor hockey teams in the fall.”

Langley Rams defensive back Jordan Linnen attended the BC Lions three-day rookie camp last week in Kamloops, and when it was all over, earned an invite to play with the big boys at the Canadian Football League club’s main camp. Main camp kicked off this week in Kamloops. Linnen is officially at camp as a non-counting junior but Lions head coach and general manager Wally Buono has made it clear in the past that there are no tourists, and no one is ever invited to main camp in a gesture of goodwill. The Lions training camp depth chart shows Linnen lining up at left side corner behind Davis Sanchez, an 11year CFL veteran and former Rams player himself, and second-year defensive back Hamid Mahmoudi. “Like all prospects at the camp, the graduate of Surrey’s Frank Hurt High School could be sent home any day, but if he keeps up his compete level there is a good chance that the Lions coaches will keep him in camp for at least the first full week,” the Rams stated in a press release.

Relationships can frustrate you Thursday to suppertime (so don’t pursue new ones) but this night and Friday bring sweet, even passionate harmony! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Wishes can come true! You remain popular, optimistic, happy. Make and accept invitations (but keep them near in time – after June 20 you’ll tire of social involvements). The year ahead is very lucky for career, ambitions, etc. Use Sunday to ground this – to examine and/or shore up your foundations, your platform for launching an ambitious bid. For example, when you’re handling long days and career pressures, a supportive family is a good foundation. Or mapping out the right territory, or lining up allies. Tuesday/Wednesday are romantic, creative – love could reach a sweet climax! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The accent remains on ambition, status, prestige relationships. Show the boss (or parents, etc.) what you can do. Sunday’s great for puttering around the neighbourhood, reading a fat newspaper, calling friends, errands and paperwork. These need a diplomatic (but opportunistic) approach Monday a.m. You reach a climax and an “ending note” in career matters Tuesday/Wednesday – all is well. Perhaps a project matures. Study long-term income and investments Thursday: these will undergo change this decade – safety key. Thursday/Friday are romantic. Chores Saturday – practise safety!

Aries March 21 - April 19: The accent continues on paperwork, messaging, errands, travel, news and casual friends. It’s a busy but not important time. Sunday’s full of mysteries and subconscious urges (so is good for seeing within or seeking critical advice). But these – and sex, finances – can meet irritation Monday. Wisdom, a gentle outlook creep in late Monday to late Wednesday – you might spend too much on travel, culture, education or a legal matter, but these things also come to a satisfying climax. Be ambitious Thursday/Friday. You’re popular Saturday, but driving, high tech are erratic. Taurus April 20-May 20: Continue to chase money. Buy sources of knowledge and co-operate with teachers. Relationships flow well Sunday, but they might run into friction Monday a.m. Ignore a financial or sexual decision/idea Monday night – these meet success Tuesday/Wednesday (although you might overspend for an investment). Be careful with ethical or legal “assumptions” (or travel ideas) Thursday to suppertime – the practical reality is far different. These matters flow with superb luck, though, Thursday night to pre-dawn Saturday. Be ambitious – but drive carefully, and forgive computers – Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness continue high. You’ll be given almost anything you ask for – but you need to be aware that asking for a partner, marriage, relocation, litigation or a contract could lead to restriction or unexpected solitude. But these are not necessarily bad. Relative solitude will come anyway, over the year ahead, as a blessing, a healing. Do ask for advice. Take this general attitude for the whole 12 months ahead: that you will, to whatever degree you can, sacrifice your own time/energy to support another (or others). This will bring good results.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Gentle love, understanding, a wide view, far travel, legal affairs, higher education, religion, cultural involvements – the accent continues on these. During the 378 days ahead, you are going to face superb luck in investments, lifestyle changes, sex/intimacy, therapy/healing, and/or research. Use Sunday to see what you already have, and what you accept as true – these are not where your luck lies; these will remain static. Monday morning, a partner’s or competitor’s comment, even if irritating, or a spied opportunity, shows where your luck lies. Romance unpredictable Saturday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Changes are still on the agenda, in lifestyle, commitments, intimacy, finances. But the biggest change involves your relationship sphere: it’s growing splendidly lucky. The year ahead will bring at least two opportunities to marry, form a business partnership, relocate, attract the public (e.g., as clients to your store) – almost all of these have a very beneficial money result! Remember for the past 15 years I kept saying that your true love phase would begin in 2011? This partnership year is part of that. Your energy’s good Sunday. Chase money midweek. Love late Thursday? Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The emphasis remains on relationships, partnerships, opportunities, relocation, negotiation. Remember, this area needs a light touch until late August 2012. Actually marrying or relocating is not a good idea, unless “life brings it” – e.g., your employer transfers you. Depend more on your own efforts, carve out your own destiny, rather than chasing perceived “opportunities.” Lie low, rest Sunday/Monday. Your energy rises nicely midweek. Chase money Thursday/Friday (but expect barriers up to Thursday suppertime). Someone’s sweet, reliable. Travel Saturday – safety first!

June 12 - 18, 2011 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: You face nine more days of drudgery work, so just keep on plugging. (As hinted earlier, perform only necessary work all year; don’t make machinery, chores, health or employment a primary focus.) Soon, fresh air, new opportunities and exciting relationships will enter. The last of these is especially significant, as the 12 months ahead bring splendid romantic openings! The same period creative and speculative luck. Optimistic risk is your friend, especially risk that, if it “wins,” will bring you more responsibility. Joy Sunday. Rest midweek, charge forth Thursday/Friday! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: This is your last week of romance, creativity, pleasure and beauty for awhile – enjoy it while you can. Be ambitious Sunday. Higher-ups are still impatient, temperamental, so be diplomatic, especially Monday morning. Your popularity surges Tuesday/Wednesday! Flirtations, entertainment, optimism abound. A romance could swell to “mad love.” But retreat Thursday/Friday: meditate, contemplate, plan, deal with government agencies, and fulfill obligations. (All these will go better Thursday night and Friday, not before.) Your energy, charisma spring up Saturday – careful driving. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The accent continues on your domestic scene, on security, property, children, retirement, gardening, nature and nutrition. Luxuriate in laziness. Sunday/Monday are wise, gentle – contemplate the why’s, not the how’s. You might feel a tug-o-war between your ambitions and your home (or your tiredness) Tuesday/Wednesday. All’s well, whichever extreme you favour. Your hopes meet barriers Thursday daytime, but this night ad Friday could bring fulfillment, especially to home-related wishes. It’s a splendid time to decorate, landscape. Weariness returns Saturday – rest, plan. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
