The sweet taste of fresh strawberries heralds the start of warm weather in Langley – although traditionally that start comes several weeks earlier. Alf Krause of Krause Berry Farms has been in business here for 35 years, and said this year is about the latest the farm has ever begun harvesting. “It’s always up to Mother Nature what she wants to give us,” Krause said. The previous spring has been one of the coldest and wettest in recent decades, with rainfall above normal in March, April, and May. May had 33 per cent more rain than average, according to Environment Canada. However, as warmer weather finally rounded the corner, the forecasters were calling for a hot,

Langley City is holding off on declaring winners in its name the trails contest until it creates a policy on how to name trails within the municipality. The City Parks and Recreation Committee had been reviewing naming suggestions on about 10 trails but members were divided over just how to choose, whether it should be based on people’s names, history, nature or other criteria. “Although we want to maintain the momentum with the naming of trails, it would be prudent and appropriate for the City to establish such a policy first prior to the evaluation of the suggested trails names,” explained City adminstrator Francis Cheung. “This policy will provide the community with a clearer understanding and more defined parameters for generating names for the trails and for PEAC and staff to evaluate the merits of those names for council consideration.” So the issue was brought to City council for the June 20 meeting to delve into creating a naming policy. The parks committee had been holding the contest to name trails in the Nicomekl Floodplain. The names would be used on signage and information products as the City also works on a wayfinding strategy to make it easier for residents and visitors to find their way around the community to its different amenities. Councillor Dave Hall said the Parks Committee will oversee a naming contest with people voting online for their favourites from suggested names. “In our enthusiasm to name some trails we probably should have created a policy first,” commented Mayor Peter Fassbender.

City vandals proving pricey The mess caused by a few is costing many taxpayers. by Heather Colpitts
hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com
Vandals are making a mess of Langley City finances. By the time 2011 is over, the City will likely spend $100,000 to repair their damage and replace what they’ve stolen, said Gary Vlieg, the City director of engineering. At Monday’s council meeting, he gave council a heads up on the spike in vandalism being seen in the City and what it will mean for the bottom line. “It affects every person that lives in the community,” Vlieg said. The City budgeted about $10,000 to cover the costs of wire theft for 2011 but has already spent more than that. “So we are about 120 per cent over budget for wire theft in 2011,” he said. He said wire thefts will cost $32,000 to $45,000, based on what has happened so far in 2011. In 2010, the City spent $8,480 to replace stolen wire and repair the damage. There have been other notable
FIBREGLASS
One of Langley’s listed prolific offenders has been arrested and faces some new theft charges. On June 18, the RCMP were called about a theft of some prints of paintings from the Penny Pincher, in the 20200 block of 56th Avenue. Police found the suspect a short distance away and arrested him. Scott Barlow, a 47-year-old of no fixed address, who frequents Langley and Abbotsford, is charged with two counts of theft under $5,000. His second charge is based on the theft of a gas powered weed eater from a parking lot on the Langley Bypass on May 16. Barlow is one of the 24 area residents who have been labelled prolific offenders by the Langley RCMP. Those typically come to police attention more often than average, with five or more “negative contacts” with police over a three month period. They are also usually on probation or release while awaiting trial. The prolific offender program was set up last October, and Crown counsel have laid more than 120 charges against the group since then.

ing “street furniture” such as benches and wastebaskets. Vlieg spoke to the RCMP about the incidents and was told there are four prolific offenders doing much of the thefts and vandalism. Three of the four are in custody. The four have trials pending. He encouraged people who see incidents or crimes to contact the police, noting it does make a difference. “We very much appreciate the public’s assistance in apprehending these people,” Vlieg said. Langley City is hoping the public anger over the Vancouver riots will help it convince the courts to be tougher on vandals. Councillor Dave Hall pitched the idea of asking the government to impose sentences that help make up for the damage they cause, such as restitution and community service, or even public shaming. Mayor Peter Fassbender commented that the courts have not been open to public shaming in sentencing. Council passed a motion to write to the Crown counsel that covers Langley and the provincial government asking that restitution and community service be used more for vandalism and wire theft cases.

incidents. Vandals have also stolen plants from Innes Corners, and tagged graffiti on the fountain at Innes Corners while the water was shut off for repairs. “The Spirit Square cover was very badly slashed earlier this month,” Vlieg said. That repair cost $3,000. The washrooms at Portage Park were sprayed with graffiti and wire was stolen from Buckley Park and Duncan Way. In 2010, the tab for park vandalism came in at $57,000 so the City budgeted for $68,000 this year. The City is looking at putting security measures, such as devices on light standards. Vlieg estimated that the measures could cost up to $50,000. Langley City will spend $15,000 to take steps at the most often targeted locations. The Township has not been immune to thefts as well. Terry Veer, manager of roads for the Township, said wire theft has amounted to between $50,000 and $60,000 so far this year, an increase from 2010 but not quite as bad as it was during the height of metal prices a few years back. The use of tamper-proof bolts on some municipal fittings seems to have helped reduce thefts, includ-

Road unwelcome
Residents of a Walnut Grove subdivision are worried a new neighbour will add traffic. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
A new through road will endanger kids, pets, and property values, residents told Langley Township council Monday night. The residents of Redwood Bridge, a townhouse complex on 96th Avenue east of 216th Street, are worried because the property to their west is about to be developed. At a rezoning hearing, they said they don’t want to see their private road connected with the two lots to the west. If the road is connected, it would create a continuous road from 96th Avenue through both complexes to 216th Street. “Don’t use our roads,” said Letitia Eakins, one of the residents. She noted that road maintenance comes out of residents’ strata fees, so more traffic could mean more costs. She also worried that the change could slash the value of her $400,000 townhome by about $100,000. Redwood Bridge strata president Dave King said the strata association has passed a resolution to deny access to the private road from the west. He noted a playground was built about 20 metres from the complex’s western property line, near the road. About a dozen other residents also spoke, voicing fears about safety, truck and construction traffic, and loss of parking spaces to outside visitors. Several residents asked that the road be kept closed, either completely or via an emergency gate or bollards. Representing the new developer, Colin Hogan of Focus Architecture noted that a road easement was registered in 2005 between the four landowners of the area, before Redwood Bridge was developed. A road easement is an agreement to allow traffic through one property to reach another. They are common for adjoining housing complexes of shopping centres. • More online at www.langleyadvance.com, click on “News”

Asbestos stance is pure lunacy There are some issues that should be above politics. Cancer is one of them, but the newly elected Conservative government has managed to drag even this issue down into the mud and muck of partisanship. Canada’s representatives have singlehandedly blocked a UN treaty – the Rotterdam Convention – from listing chrysotile asbestos as a dangerous chemical. Chrysotile asbestos causes lung cancer, a particularly nasty form of it. It typically affects people who work with the material. Not in Canada, mind you, but in developing countries. Canada bans the use of the fireproof material in construction. But it does export it to countries like India and the Philippines, where workers have less protection, both legal and physical, from breathing in the noxious particles. Listing asbestos under the Rotterdam Convention would have forced exporters to warn importing countries. They could then turn down the shipments on safety and health grounds. It’s worth noting that Canada is the only country to now block the new rules. Other countries had come around. But now, to protect Canada’s right to export death, our government has stepped in to scuttle the deal. This shouldn’t be a surprise. During the recent election campaign, PM Stephen Harper publicly stood up for the carcinogenic industry when he stumped for votes in Quebec – which is where the only current, and possible future, Canadian asbestos mines are located. Not every Conservative is so deeply out of touch. Langley MP Mark Warawa recently spoke of doing something about asbestos exports, and we hope he continues to go against the grain and stands up to his party. He can expect support from retired MP and cancer survivor Chuck Strahl. The sad thing is that this is an issue at all. Preventing cancer should be an issue that all can support. – M.C.

Anniversary
Congrats on 80 years Dear Editor,
On behalf of the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce I wish to express our gratitude for the article in the June 21 edition of the Langley Advance recognizing the Chamber’s 80th anniversary. The Chamber of Commerce congratulates the Langley Advance (the Chamber’s longest standing member) on your 80th Anniversary of serving the citizens, businesses and organizations in our community. We look forward to working with you to promote Langley as a great place to invest, live and play! Again, congratulations on your milestone anniversary.

LMH nurses top notch
Dear Editor, I always hear and read about negative experiences at hospitals, so I would like to write a letter thanking the nurses of the ambulatory care ward at Langley Memorial Hospital. They were professional, empathetic, and above all, had a great sense of humour. This “healthy young guy” was nervous, and seeing and hearing how efficient the nurses were helped me get through my procedure. Great work. I look forward to seeing them next year. Writer explores HST impact Dear Editor,
Most real estate transactions require the services of a lawyer or notary. You are charged HST on their services. Most transactions require a land appraisal. You are charged HST on this. Most transactions engage the services of a real estate agent. You are charged HST on this. You use the services of a mover or rent a truck to move. You pay HST. Most moves involve two transactions – you sell so you can buy. The HST then has double the impact. Dean Holcombe, Langley

country. I am 50 years old and have lived in Langley for the past 23 years. I have been a motorcycle rider most of my adult life, and will be for years to come. I was recently pulled over by the RCMP on Highway One in Burnaby, due to the helmet I chose to wear. It is not a D.O.T.approved helmet, and I am fully aware of that. I’ve been wearing the same helmet for six years and never had a problem. I’ve been through road checks and even asked a few RCMP during my travels what the laws are and received many different answers. This RCMP officer told me that I wasn’t going to get a ticket for the nonDOT helmet, but I wasn’t going anywhere until I got a proper helmet. He told me to leave my $42,000 HarleyDavidson on the side of the freeway and take a cab to get a proper helmet. His attitude towards me from the start was horrid. He told me that the helmet laws have been in place since the ’80s, and I should know that. I called a friend and waited for two hours for him to bring me a “proper” helmet. There is lots more to the story concerning that RCMP officer but that’s not really important. I hold a flawless Class 1 drivers licence and have been driving professionally for the past 30 years – no speeding tickets or accidents in all my years on the road. I have seen a lot from the driver’s seat of my rig. My question for MP Mark Warawa is, what are the helmet laws? New leaders chosen at chamber of commerce The changing of the guard was held at the chamber’s AGM. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
A new team has taken over the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce as the business advocate entered its ninth decade. At Tuesday night’s annual general meeting, the 80-year-old chamber acclaimed a new president and executive, and group of district directors, as well as electing six directors at large. Denni Bonetti of Bonetti Meats will be the new chamber president for 2011/12. As well as working at the familyowned butcher shop in Aldergrove, Bonetti has had an 18-year career with the Aldergrove Credit Union. Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender led Bonetti through the oath of office.
Township Mayor Rick Green took the task of swearing in the whole group of the new executive and directors at large. Both mayors took the opportunity to give the chamber kudos for its work in the community. The new president is joined by Angie Quaale of Well Seasoned Gourmet Foods as first vice president, Jeremy East of BDO Canada as second vice president. Kristine Simpson of KPMG will serve as secretary-treasurer, and Milt Kruger is the past president. Bonetti began her tenure by thanking Kruger, and noting that he has just been elected to the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, so she will continue to work with him both locally and at a provincial level. The new president said she will continue to seek positive change, ensuring that the voice of the chamber is heard in Langley. Promoting the Langleys as a place to live, play,

Big year, big hearts at Country Lumber
Country Lumber has been in a bit of upheaval with the recent expansion of its Murrayville facilities, but still found time this spring to care about kids. At the end of May, Country Lumber and its staff held a fundraiser, and together, with the support of its customers, they raised $3,078. The company then matched the funds to raise the total to more than $6,100. And as a Timbr-Mart dealer, the TimbrKids Children Foundation then donated a further $4,000 to raise the total contribution to more than $10,000 – and all earmarked for the kids. Specifically, the money is going to the BC Lions Society’s Easter Seals campaign, which helps pay for about 800 children with disabilities around the province attend a one-week camp each summer. What an unbelievable gift considering it costs upwards of $2,500 per child. And thanks in big part to the annual Easter Seals 24-Hour Relay and donations like the one from Country Lumber staff and management, 27 Langley children will be able to attend camp this year – that’s two more than last year.

As usual, this meeting begins with registration at 6:45 a.m. and kicks off with the presentation at 7 a.m. Pre-registration is required by contacting the chamber at 604-530-6656 or events@langleychamber.com. Chamber of Commerce
Polak gives HST pitch once more Langley’s MLA gives the business community another pro-HST argument.
She also pointed out the $175 bonus for children under 18 years, and the increase in the business income tax. Those changes, particularly the business tax changes, were made after consulting people around the province, Polak said. She noted that it was seen as unfair to shift the tax burden from businesses to consumers. If voters choose to reject the HST, it will mean a higher tax rate, Polak said. She noted tobacco taxes are set to go up again as well. This is the second presentation on the HST in recent months. A pair of financial experts also spoke at the chamber recently, also advising that the HST be kept. They said it will create jobs, will eventually lower the prices of consumer goods, and will be good for the economy. However, they also admitted it will increase costs for consumers.

Mary Polak, MLA for Langley, called on local businesspeople to vote to keep the HST as the mail-in referendum continues. Polak, who sped through a presentation Tuesday night at the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce meeting, focussed on the changes made since May. “There’s a reason why we changed. Not just because the HST was hugely unpopular,” Polak said. She pointed to two upcoming rate reductions, by one percentage point each, that will take effect in 2012 and 2014.

he membership fee was $1 when the Langley Weavers and Spinners met in 1974. The group was actually formed in 1971 under the sponsorship of the Langley Arts Council.
Langley’s Inge Burg set up the group’s first weaving class in the spring of 1972. The guild had applied for and received an $800 grant to purchase equipment that would be used to teach the art form.
The guild was able to offer classes in the Langley City swimming pool building when it wasn’t being used in the winter months. Since that restricted classes to when people weren’t splashing about, the guild and City found a solution and the group met at Portage House, which was torn down in 1978. The group held its meetings at various locales, moving into Beaulieu House in 1978. Guild members past and present gathered at Sharon United Church Tuesday for a celebration of the group’s 40th anniversary. It was also an opportunity to reflect on why they continue to love these ancient crafts and why it’s important to keep these skills alive. The members come from different walks of life. Some are immigrants who had done fabric arts before moving here and wanted to continue. Many members have found their way to the guild through 4-H because of the group’s support of young people and the desire to pass on these skills. “One of the things I value about our guild is the fact that at any given time you are a teacher or a learner,” said Diana Twiss. She joined around 2000, frustrated at not being able to find quality wool yarns for her knitting and wanting to learn how to make her own. working in post-production for the film and TV industry and moved to Langley recently from Abbotsford. After collecting art most of his adult life, he decided to try making some and found a new passion. Moes has lived in Langley most of her life, save for a stint in Nova Scotia when she studied international development at Dalhousie. That didn’t develop as planned. “I missed creating and moved back home,” Moes said. She’s recently graduated from the University of the Fraser Valley’s visual arts program. “The pieces for the show are part of a series I started in my last semester of university and have continued since,” she said. “They are embroidered (yes, thread) paintings of broken glass and embroidered prints of drawings I’ve done.” The show runs June 24 to July 10.
The family-run company is owned and operated by Ed Murphy, who is joined by his daughter Melodie and sons Chris and Todd. Murphy bought the 30-year-old business in 1994 and moved it to a nearby larger location where he expanded the operation from a one-garage bay to the existing 8,000-sq. ft. facility. Store manager Al Chrzanecki, who has been with the business for about a year and a half, said he is especially proud of the new hardware division. “We expanded the company by adding a hardware division, to the existing rentals and lawn and garden divisions,” Chrzanecki said. “It is going extremely well. It is continuously growing,” he added.
Whether buying or renting tools and equipment, or picking up a part to repair your lawn mower, Brookswood Rentals has the experience and expertise to help you get the job done. Brookswood Rentals is an authorized dealer for hard working, top-of-the-line name brands like Toro, Stihl, Lawn-Boy and Shindaiwa. Rentals include air tools, compressors, augers, compaction equipment, barbecues, generators, lifts, paint sprayers and pressure washers. Scaffolding, concrete equipment, sanders and many more tool and equipment rentals are also available. Serving both contractors and homeowners alike, Brookswood Rentals is there to help, and yes, they deliver.
“The support from the Brookswood community has been fabulous,” said Chrzanecki, who added that many customers comment they love that the store is right in Brookswood and they can avoid the busy downtown core. The hardware division was added to the already thriving business to make Brookswood Rentals a one-stop shopping hub for all lawn and garden needs.

Stephanie T., Langley Dear Stephanie, am so glad you asked this question, as I always use this as a topic of discussion with my students. Firstly, if you are boiling your potatoes, try steaming them instead. Potatoes will take on excess unnecessary water while being boiled, and water has no flavour. Steaming will help to prevent that, plus they will cook faster, as steam is hotter than boiling water. If you insist on boiling, then at least make sure that the water is liberally salted so the potatoes will become seasoned as they boil. The most important thing to do, however, is to “taste” the salad. Dressings are usually prepared separately and then mixed with the bland potatoes. People are very careful to taste their dressings in progress, and adjust the seasonings as needed, but we often forget to taste the salad once it is combined. Always taste and adjust the seasonings in anything you make, just before you are serving it, so that you can assess it in the same form that your guests will.

pockets are the perfect item to serve it in. They eliminate the need for paper plates and plastic cutlery, while adding a gourmet aura to your salad eating experience. If carbohydrates are a concern, lettuce leaves also work great as salad holders. That brings our conversation to the next common picnic item – sandwiches. Instead of peanut butter and jelly or egg salad, why not make Italian pressed sandwiches filled with a variety of Mediterranean meats, cheeses, and complementary flavours? This is not as hard as it sounds, as it is made in a large loaf and then cut into individual sandwiches. To ease the preparation, purchase a large ciabatta loaf from the bakery counter. Cut it in half lengthwise and hollow out the majority of the centre while keeping

ow many people are tired of the same old picnics items? Do memories of bland potato salads and boring sandwiches persuade you to buy fast food or, worse yet, keep you locked indoors? Whether it’s a romantic picnic for two or a family outing, easy-to-prepare gourmet ideas will liven-up your picnic basket for this holiday long weekend. One of the simplest things to pack for a romantic picnic for two is a fruit and cheese assortment, as there is virtually no preparation required. A grocery store with a delicatessen counter will be able to provide you with a number of small cheeses and specialty meats. While you are there, pick up an assortment of fruit, like grapes, pears, and local fresh berries, along with some gourmet crackers and pepper jelly. Wash the fruit but leave everything else in its original store packaging. You will want to pack a small cutting board, a couple of sharp knives, and if legally feasible, a bottle of wine. If wine is not an option, then juice in wine glasses will create the same seductive ambiance. Too many family picnic gatherings are bombarded with the usual potato salads and coleslaws. However, no matter what salad you choose, it will require some assembly, so it’s better to expend that energy by making something different. The variations of salads are endless. A quick and easy way is to create one from the ingredients you already have in your fridge and pantry. If you don’t have the confidence to go this far, then blow some dust off the cookbooks you have piling up, and try something you have never made before. Whatever salad you choose to prepare, pita

tudents at the Langley campus of Kwantlen Polytechnic University could have an easier time affording higher education. The school has announced its largest scholarship ever. The Katherine Cummings Award, valued at approximately $5,000, will be awarded to a student either entering or currently enrolled in Kwantlen’s Music Diploma program. “To a deserving student this award brings both encouragement and the opportunity to focus entirely on their studies,” said Dr. Zdenek Skoumal, who chairs the music department which is based in Langley. The first scholarship went to a Surrey student studying voice. Kwantlen has more than $1 million worth of scholarships available to students in various disciplines. It opened its doors more than three decades ago as a college and was named a university a couple of years ago. It has campuses in Langley, Cloverdale, Surrey and Richmond.

Moss replaces lawn grass Dear Anne,
“I like moss in my lawn, unlike most people. It is soft, dense, and green, and really wants to live in our front yard. I have decided to let it take over. How do I go about it? Do I take out the grass? Do I stop aerating my lawn and feeding it?”
Y
Maryke Messchaert, via email es, it would be best to take out the grass and stop aerating. In time, the grass would likely dwindle and die anyway, but in the meantime, you’d need to mow it – and lawnmowers are difficult to move over deep, soft moss. To encourage moss to spread faster, you could take a handful of moss (without soil) and put it into a bowl (or a blender) with two cups of buttermilk and two cups of water. Mix until you have a thin, creamy liquid. If it is too thick, add more water. Then pour the liquid anywhere you would like to establish more moss. It might be hard to get even coverage. The easiest way of applying the moss would be hand-watering with a cheap plastic can, because their roses
(the shower spouts) have fairly large holes. If they plug, you could try thinning the mossy liquid even more. Because moss loves shady, acidic, moist conditions, watering that area in long, summer droughts might be necessary (though if it did get brown, I’m sure it would green up with fall rain, just as grass does). Since the moss is growing well anyway, shade and acidity are already present and I don’t think you’ll need to enhance them. Dear Anne,
“I had three lilies in my garden last year. One had beautiful large buds but it was eaten by deer. The second one had five huge, fragrant flowers, but I came home from work to find it cut one inch from the ground. The third one wasn’t doing well, so I transplanted it. Now they all look wet and soft. Can I save them, or are they finished?”
Gwen Richardson, via email f you mean the bulbs look soft, then yes, they are finished and can’t be saved. You should dig up one and check for sure. But if you mean that the old, dead stems look soft, then the bulbs may still be fine.
I
In the Garden by Anne Marrison
Lily bulbs are usually very hardy, and easily come through even hard winters. But I suspect you may not have been growing true lilies. Unfortunately, bulbs which are not lilies at all are sometimes sold under names which include the word lily. Many of them aren’t nearly as hardy as true lilies, and some aren’t hardy at all in our climate. Some examples include ‘Lily of the Nile’ (agapanthus) and ‘Pineapple Lily’ (Eucomis), both of which are sold here as patio plants to be grown in containers and placed outside after frost season. After flowering outside in summer, they are brought inside before frost strikes, and kept inside all winter. Dear Anne,
“When is the best time of year to put more topsoil on the garden?”
Gill Edwards, via email he very best time to add topsoil to flower beds is in early spring, before the perennials and spring bulbs reach any kind of height. In the vegetable garden, you need to spread soil before putting in seeds, sets, or transplants. That is usually best done in spring, but can be done in early fall, if that’s when you plant garlic and shallot sets.

Basketball
Rio ultimate destination for B.C. team member A young wheelchair basketball player with Paralympic aspirations is honing his craft at Langley Fine Arts School.
Troy Landreville/Langley Advance
Wheelchair basketball player Jack Kosterman practises at Langley Fine Arts School three times per week. den to put weight on his leg. “I started using a wheelchair, then crutches, then I went back into a wheelchair,” Jack explained. “I think I was in a wheelchair for about a year, then
I was non-weight bearing for another half a year on my left leg, so I used crutches.” At one point, it looked like he would lose his leg because the blood supply was severed by the
severe break. To keep pressure off his leg, he had to sleep for more than a year in traction. However, doctors eventually put him on an experimental chemotherapy program, which slowed down the disorder and allowed the bone to heal and retain its shape. The blood supply was reattached. Eventually, he’ll need a hip replacement. “Jack can walk. He’s been walking since January,” Jack’s dad Mitch pointed out. “He can’t walk very far and he still has a moderate amount of pain but he is no longer wheelchair bound. He usually uses a cane.” ••• With little offered for disabled athletes in Langley, BC Wheelchair Basketball and BC Wheelchair Sports worked with the Kostermans to launch the Langley Gold Rush Wheelchair Basketball Club this spring. Jack is one of the club’s pioneer members. Practices were held at Alex Hope Elementary and players ranged in age from 10 years old to adult. Kari Olesen, a Langley School District physiotherapist who has worked with Jack, said he has embraced wheelchair sports. “Jack is a passionate kid who is a great advocate for wheelchair sports. He was an athlete before the injury and has taken to wheelchair [basketball] in particular. He’s working with his family to bring wheelchair sports to Langley and to the community. I’m not running into too many kids in Grade 7 who are willing to give up their own time.” Once his wheelchair basketball season came to an end, Jack sought out venues to sharpen his skills on the hardcourt. continued on page A33…

Fans get to name new mascot Boxing brothers Can you think of a better name for the Langley Rivermen’s mascot than our suggested “Paddler Pete?”

Just a couple of the suggested names circulating around the Advance office for the Langley Rivermen’s new mascot are “Paddler Pete” and “Backwoods Billy.” Now it’s your turn. The B.C. Hockey League team is getting its fans involved, to put a name to the Rivermen’s identity and Name the Mascot. “It’s important to get the fans’ input,” said co-owner and team president Roy Henderson, who knows the value the mascot has for the community and the young fans who attend the games. “We want people to see him in the community, and be excited and know that they played a role in his name.” The contest was launched via the club’s social media and website, www.langleyrivermen.com on Wednesday, June 22. Fans can visit the team’s website and submit names. If Twitter and Facebook is your preference, head to @langleyrivermen on Twitter or find the Rivermen fan page on Facebook and add your opinion. The “Bruise Brothers” highlight this Friday’s Clash at the Cascades 9 amateur boxing show. Siblings Jake and Caleb Weitzel will be in action as boxing returns to the Coast Hotel and Convention Centre June 24, starting at 7:30 p.m. The card is set with a variety of matches, including a women’s bout. The main event will see a much-anticipated rematch as super lightweight champion Jake Weitzel of Abbotsford takes on Akbar Qurban of Burnaby. The two clashed a couple of years ago in a bout sanctioned by Boxing BC that uses computer scoring. The British Columbia Combative Sports Association will sanction this match that uses the 20point must system. This was the scoring method used by amateur boxing for decades, and is
still used in the U.S. Qurban won the first bout by decision, however will face a much different Weitzel, who has not only been active, but has not tasted defeat in a while. On the line: Weitzel’s B.C. super lightweight title belt. Caleb Weitzel will face Jonathon “The Pit Bull” Dubois for a City cruiserweight championship. These two tangled back on May 6, when Weitzel won a split decision that both Dubois and many fans thought was the wrong decision, according to City Boxing trainer Dave Allison, who is organizing the event. “This will be a fourround contest and will give both a chance to settle the issue,” Allison said. The card will also feature two rising stars in Mat Andreatta, 17, of City Boxing and undefeated Ibriham “The Dream” Ibriham of Raw Academy, a Vancouver Club. Both are prospects and bring their own advantages to the bout, said Allison, who trains Andreatta. continued on page A35…

Paralympic hopeful trains at LFAS
…continued from page A31 Thanks in large part to the efforts of vice principal Susan Perkins, Langley Fine Arts School has become Jack’s new training ground. He practises there three times a week, on average of three hours per session, free of charge. “I think shooting is my game,” he said. “I practise three or four times a week and for an hour or so I just keep shooting all around the net,” he said. “I really like shooting, yeah. I think I can get a lot better.” Jack’s brother Stuart attends Grade 11 at LFAS. Before LFAS offered its gym, the Kostermans had their share of setbacks in their search for a place for Jack to train and play. “The sad thing is, Langley has no sports for disabled athletes. None,” Mitch wrote recently, in a letter to a local politician. “We have travelled several days a week for two years now to Richmond, New West, Surrey, Chilliwack and several other cities in order to participate in programs these communities offer to disabled athletes. Surrey is the province’s centre for sledge hockey. New West is the province’s centre for wheelchair basketball. These two are sports where Canada dominates worldwide. No country has more medals in these two sports than Canada.” ••• To get Jack to Rio in 2016, his family started a bottle drive last year.

The Kostermans have experience with bottle drives thanks to the many years they’ve spent in Scouting. The family collects bottles from Mitch’s co-workers, as well as from neighbours and others who support Jack. A major contributor to Jack’s “Road to Rio” is the TV show Supernatural where Mitch’s brother Clif works. During the season, Clif keeps a utility trailer at the studio and, throughout the work day, crew members and cast tossed their bottles and cans into it. Every couple of weeks, Clif brought the trailer to his brother’s house and unloaded the bounty, which was then sorted through and deposited. ••• 2016 will be a transition year for Jack, who has designs on attending the University of Illinois after high school.
Illinois has an established wheelchair basketball program, and competes against NCAA universities in the U.S. such as Alabama and Texas. Jack will get a preview of what he hopes will be his future home starting this weekend when he visits the university for a training camp. “A player from Saskatchewan who I just competed against in Halifax for the Canada Games is going to the University of Illinois next year, as well as a few players from Quebec,” Jack said. Beyond Rio and Illinois, Jack wants to play basketball for a living. “I’d love to play professionally, someday,” he said, noting pro leagues exist in Germany, France, Italy, Turkey, and Australia.

BARRETT, Andrew James
Andrew was born on August 30, 1964 in Swindon, England and tragically passed away on June 17, 2011. Andrew is survived by his loving fiancée, Rosanna, and her children Ryan and Leah; his daughter Nadine, and her children James, Angel and Drake; brother Steve and his wife Gordana and their children, Andrew and Natasha. Andrew is predeceased by his parents John Edward Victor and Ruther Ester Barrett. Andrew lived a life of kindness for all, with a great sense of humor and a profound love of family and friends. We will always remember his hard working nature as a Roofer, Mechanic, Construction Worker, a jack of all trades. The family would like to thank all the Doctors and Nurses at Royal Columbian Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital, Langley Fire Department and Helicopter Rescue Service. You will forever be in our Hearts. Family and Friends are invited to a Celebration of Andrew’s life, to be held on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at Royal Canadian Legion, 2643 - 128th Street, South Surrey, BC, at 12:00pm.
BERG Loren Hermann
It is with broken hearts that the family announces the sudden and unexpected passing of Loren Hermann Berg. Born in Vancouver on March 3, 1952, Loren was the middle child and only son of Donna and the late Hermann Berg. He leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife Sandi and his adoring children - Shane and Ashley; Tara; Tam and April; Jody and Bruno; Danielle and Jason; Justin and Tara; Randy and Debbie; Lillian, Richard, Barbara and Kyra; together with his most precious grandchildren - Rylee, Amanda, Natasha, Victoria, David, Bodhi, Kyler, Carsen, Todd and Ryan; his mother, Donna Berg, his sisters, Wanda Jones and Lois Hill (Elroy) and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He also leaves behind his good coffee friends at Tims whom he met faithfully every morning. Loren was the strength of his family. No matter what the crisis, Loren could be counted on to lend his support. For those he loved, there was nothing he would not do – no trip too far – no obstacle too high. He spent his life helping others, especially children in need. His willingness to bring them SPACE into his heart and home was selfless and a true reflection of who he really BOOKING was. His children considered him to be their tower of courage and strength. For: He loved themCANNON, unconditionally, and they knew that.NORMA To his grandchildren, he was a gentle giant, warm, playful and loving, always quick with a friendly Rep: VMcGinnis poke or a heartfelt hug. Ad#: 1318418 Loren helped us all with his quick wit and gentle humour. He showed us that there is more to life than position, or fortune or fame. There is family, and nothing was more important to Loren than those he loved. Through our grief, we thank God for the privilege of being part of Loren’s world. As we struggle to understand how he could be gone so soon, we know that we have been part of something special. We have been in Loren’s circle of loved ones. And for that, we are grateful. The family expresses its heartfelt gratitude to those - including our sons Jason and Justin, good Samaritans Glen and Brenda, Paramedics, Firefighters, and RCMP – who worked heroically to try and save Loren’s life during the crisis at home. We also deeply appreciate the attention and kindness of those we encountered in the Emergency Ward of Abbotsford Regional Hospital. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 25th at 1:00 P.M., at the Stebanuk property, 2708 – 204 Street, Langley. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Loren’s name to the Dark Horse Riders (The Enbridge Ride To Conquer Cancer), an event which Loren, as a cancer survivor, held very close to his heart. www.remembering.ca

Renting or buying, we’ve got what you’re looking for.
Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: The weeks ahead feature property, family, security, gardening, retirement, and the establishment or strengthening of foundations (concrete and emotional/spiritual). You’ll say goodbye to some people or situations, and greet new ones. Snip off wilted vines. Chase money Monday/ Tuesday, but pay attention to major developments: 1) the change in your life and goals causes a change in your home and foundations; 2) this “home change” must face and deal with a change in status or career. Both are long-term, fill the decade ahead – many heartfelt wishes will come true before 2018! Taurus April 20-May 20: Short trips, paperwork, errands, calls, news and casual acquaintances fill the weeks ahead. It’s a busy but not important time. A new project could arise in these areas Thursday onward. Your energy and charisma hit a beautiful peak Sunday/Monday – both days feature a critical development, one which will mold your character going forward. Not in a “war” or conflict way, but in a wisdom way. Chase money Tuesday/Wednesday – but reasonably. Information comes Thursday to Saturday – avoid taking risks in property, legal, and employment zones. Avoid gossip all week; think first. Gemini May 21-June 20: Chase money, seek new clients, buy/sell, and deal with all money matters for the few weeks ahead. Your overall financial, investment, net worth situation is changing – has been changing since 2008, and will continue to do so until 2023. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. Hints of this (and perhaps of tension between your social needs and your money desires) appear Sunday/Monday. Now through August 2012, don’t make the wrong financial decision based on anger, selfishness, over-independence, or a “fed up” feeling. Your energy, charisma surge mid-week – start good things!

Cancer June 21-July 22: Your energy, effectiveness, magnetism, and optimism rise for the weeks ahead. You’re on a winning track! That is, if you don’t get knocked off it Sunday/Monday by insisting too strongly on your own way. Be flexible, discern others’ desires. Your popularity rises the rest of this year, and this Monday it could bring you love! Wish, hope, see opportunities, not oppositions. Retreat for a rest and some deep thinking Tuesday/Wednesday – good plans can hatch, and civil servants favour you. Your energy, clout rise Thursday-Saturday: but a domestic or realty problem needs solving. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Take life easy, roll with the punches this week and the next few.Lie low, rest, plan, meditate, deal with shut-ins, fulfill old obligations, be charitable and spiritual, especially Thursday to Saturday. Study career, employment, government and head-office situations Sunday/Monday – think about the changes these areas face now to 2023. Your health faces changes too: a chronic condition disappears. The decade ahead brings digestive concerns, so eat sensibly. Vegetables cure ills. Your hopes rise Tuesday/Wednesday: enjoy a pleasant interval. Saturday night brings “potent glances.” Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Hopes and wishes come true over the weeks ahead. Your optimism grows, your popularity rises. Expect flirtation, light romance, entertainment, social delights! Issue and accept invitations. Wisdom, understanding visit Sunday/Monday. You could see friends struggle, or gravitate toward one another. Be ambitious Tuesday/ Wednesday – you can make headway, all is smooth, especially in money areas related to career. Your hopes and happiness rise Thursday to Saturday, but impediments arise to money, earnings, sensuality and romance – practical impediments. Smile, bide your time.

June 26 - July 2, 2011
Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The cosmos nudges you toward career, business, ambition and prestige situations for the next few weeks (especially late this week). Simultaneously, a deeper, perhaps unconscious force pulls you toward domesticity, security, foundations. You could experience this as a try-versus-quit tug-o-war. It’s there strongly Sunday/ Monday. Best approach: make changes to your career (etc.) goals in order to conform to new realities. The year ahead favours major life changes, and these could also touch a lucky wand to your investments and/or intimate life. For success: talk, be curious! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: This is a gentle, sweet time of understanding and wisdom. You might meet a love who could become a life mate – though this is more favoured after July 2, as practical impediments lurk all this week (e.g., that handsome guy is a single father with 10 loud kids.) But in the big picture, you’re finally on true love’s road – though your destination could appear in any one of the fifteen years ahead. The 12 months ahead bring lucky relationships and splendid money opportunities. Love’s choice arises Tuesday. Finances, sexual urges are easy midweek, but might be subtle traps. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Mysteries, secrets, changes and commitments fill the weeks ahead, especially this Thursday-Saturday – though so many practical barriers and traps arise this week that you should wait until next week to act. (Especially to invest, change lifestyle, seek a health diagnosis, undergo surgery, seek sexual intimacy, or make any kind of important commitment or new start.) Sunday/Monday are for chores – practice safety, and eat/dress sensibly. Relationships are smooth and benign Tuesday/Wednesday – still, be wary of committing yourself (and of offered advice). Joy, Saturday late!
Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Relationships are paramount during this irritating week. Be diplomatic. Bosses and VIPs seem un-amused, and practical matters run into soft, subtle but strong impediments. Opportunities will come, but the good ones arrive after July 2, not before. Sunday/Monday are romantic – you could meet someone who finds you mysteriously attractive. This could grow to “deep heights.” Tackle chores Tuesday/Wednesday, but don’t take on so much it will interfere with other activities. You’re meant to find love and pleasure this year: to deny it would be a loss. Go slow Thursday to Saturday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The month ahead holds chores, health and nutrition concerns, and nudges you to attend to kids and pets. It’s a good time to seek employment – after this week. Though Sunday/ Monday might contain stress (Sunday) and a feeling of alienation (Monday) these days also highlight home, recuperation, Gaia, property – all imbued with good/ great fortune over the months ahead. A nice romantic breeze is wafting its way through your life June/July, and you should feel its light touch Tuesday/Wednesday. Handle chores, but avoid romance, machinery purchases, dull people, Thursday-Saturday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The accent lies on romance, pleasure, beauty, creative surges, speculation, risks and self-expression, now through late July (and especially this Thursday-Saturday). This week’s a little dicey, though, filled with practical barriers, so a bit of waiting or hesitation isn’t unwise. Sunday/Monday indelibly link your romantic and social sides, or cause a tug-o-war between the two. A friend might become a lover (or hints thereof) – or you might have to choose between the two. Domestic matters flow smoothly Tuesday/Wednesday, but might not be beneficial long-term. Talk aids career. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
