The support air traffic control Bryson Katzel, of Langley, and YVR Airport, has for the Vancouver Canucks is clear, through a banner that hangs off the control tower. However, the banner soon had to come down for repairs after it was damaged by high winds. With the banner in his truck early Tuesday morning, May 24, Katzel drove to Supergraphics in Port Kells. The main office was locked, however, down the side of the warehouse past the closed gates, Katzel saw people working. “I hoisted the banner on my shoulder, opened the gate and

I explained my situation and to my surprise four employees stopped what they were doing and scrambled to help,” Katzel explained. “It had to be Canucks fever. In less than two hours the banner was reinforced, additional grommets added, and ready to go. They were awesome and I was on my way back to the tower.” By 2:30 p.m. that day, the banner was back in place. “We’re going to keep it up until the Canucks win the Stanley Cup and then it’ll stay up after to celebrate it, I’d think,” said Brent Bell, manager of Vancouver’s air traffic control tower. “It looks fabulous, it goes great with the architecture of the tower, it looks like it fits right in, [and] it looks like a big Canucks jersey up there. And it’s a real sense of pride to have that on the side of the tower, all the controllers get a good charge out of it and they get lots of feedback from everybody in the airport. Everybody just really loves it.” Katzel said he plans to put up the banner every post-season, whenever the Canucks make the playoffs. “It will become a permanent fixture at YVR,” Katzel said. – With files from the Vancouver Canucks’ website, canucks.nhl.com.

Stanley Cup
Finals still possible at LEC by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
The Langley Events Centre may yet host big-screen showings of the Canucks playoff games. However, it wasn’t to be for the June 6 game. On Monday night, the LEC was booked up for practices and couldn’t be opened to show the game on screens in the arena, said Jared Harmon, head of marketing for the centre. Township administrator Mark Bakken said the goal is to show the games on the main screens above the rink. However, that may not be possible if it would disrupt the activities of
Ho, ho, hockey
various user groups. The Township and LEC staff were still working to find time, but Harmon noted that the facility was very busy with practices and lacrosse games. It was a struggle finding new spaces for the groups which would have to be moved to make way for a Canucks game showing. Langley City and the Downtown Langley Merchants Association looked into getting a big display screen to show the games outside – but the cost was prohibitive, said Councillor Terri James. It would have been $10,000 per game for the screen and extra security, and would have depleted the DLMA’s budget by quite a bit, she said.
Hockey fans are hoping for Christmas in June which is what it will feel like if the Vancouver Canucks win the Stanley Cup. Game 3 was Monday evening with Game 4 on Wednesday, June 8. Fan submission

Attention Lower Mainland Home Owners: 56 of you are about to make an important financial decision...
“Frustrated Contractor ‘Giving Away’ $4946.00 Furnaces for $1181 with Off-Season Central Air ...” (“This is the Hottest AND Coolest Deal of the Century” ... especially if your furnace is over 8 years old) Dear Friend I’m about to make you a deal that’s hard to refuse if you’ve got an “older” (and probably less than optimally efficient) furnace. I’ll replace your old furnace AND heat pump as a “package deal” for at least $3136.00 less than you would pay any other time of the year. Sound too good to be true? It’s not and here’s why. I’m making you what sounds like an unbelievable offer because it actually makes good sense for my business. And you come out a winner, as well! You see, I know from experience that in my slowest months I actually end up losing money ... then I have to spend the rest of the year trying to make up for it. Right now, I have no reason to believe 2011 will be any different.
with the manufacturer, and then committing to buying 56 systems outright, I got BOTH the furnace AND the heat pump at a price that would have made Sam Walton proud. This means when you buy one of these 56 new, premium-quality heat pumps I will “give” you the furnace and ask you to pay only the $1181 in labor it costs to install your furnace. Pick up your phone right now Simply call me at 946-1000 at anytime so I can come out and measure your home (to see if I’ve got the proper size unit). Remember ... I’ve got only 56 matched systems in 3 sizes so you’ll want to let me know VERY SOON that you’re interested. When these 56 systems are gone, they’re gone, and this offer is null and void. Call me right now so we can get the ball rolling!
That’s why I’ve decided to give up trying to make a profit during these months and minimize my losses ... so I can come out ahead the rest of the year.
As part of the deal, I’ll show you how much the heat pump costs ... how much the furnace WOULD have cost ... and your savings when you buy your new heat pump and furnace as part of this special offer. The price I show you will include all installation materials and labor. There’s no fine print, nothing left out.
So here’s how I can make the incredible offer at the top of this letter.
Earlier I said that making you this amazing offer is also good business for me
Every year the biggie furnace manufacturers guesstimate how many furnaces to produce. Since there’s no way of knowing what the weather will be like and other factors that affect sales, these guys always have leftover inventory they have to hold onto until the next heating season.
The way I look at it, by letting YOU win big now, I’ll win at the end of the year. And I won’t have to “make up” for the lost sales during my slowest months.
I saw a great business opportunity in this and went to one of these biggie companies (they won’t allow me to use their name in this letter) and contracted for the purchase of 56 of these furnaces that were going to just be sitting around. Plus, I bought 56 heat pumps all in the 3 most popular sizes used in Lower Mainland homes. Because of the number I bought and the time of year I purchased them, I got an unbelievable deal ... rock-bottom prices. Don’t get me wrong - these are brand-new, top quality, 2011 models. Not “seconds.” Not “blems.” Not builder-grade. These are premium furnaces and heat pumps fresh from a name-brand factory with a full factory warranty. How to Get Your Name Brand Furnace for Virtually Nothing By putting together this furnace-plus-heat pump package (I call it the “Hottest AND Coolest Deal of the Century”), going through some heavy negotiations
I figure if I make you an absolutely irresistible offer .. if your furnace is pushing 8 years or more ... and if I barely mark up the price I paid, I’ll accomplish 2 major objectives that will allow me to reduce my losses the rest of the year. I’ll be able to ... • Pay my overhead (rent, utilities, insurance and taxes) during the slow period • Keep my service & installation technicians busy enough to pay them to work instead of sit at home. As you can see, when you take me up on my “Hottest AND Coolest Deal of the Century,” EVERYONE IS A WINNER! And by the way, there’s no obligation when you have me come out to measure your house and explain the installation If you decide you don’t want to take advantage of this incredible deal (although I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t want to save this kind of money), it’s no problem. You’re not obligated in any way. In fact, just for taking time to read this letter and having me out to survey your house ... I’ll give you a Very Special Free Gift Coupon ($50 value). Why? Even if we don’t do
business together now, I want you to remember us in the future. If you’re thinking a new furnace (& heat pump) isn’t in your budget - don’t worry! You don’t have to pay me right now Because I’ve tried to think of every reason possible why you WOULDN’T take me up on this spectacular offer, I’ve even made arrangements for a super bank rate financing plan. And I’m not “marking up” the interest rate like so many other companies do. While I can’t promise you this, it’s possible that with this financing plan your monthly investments in a new system could be more than paid for by the savings you see on your monthly utility bills. My Disappointment-Proof Guarantee Talking about lower utility bills, I’m so sure you’ll see at least a 25% cut in your heating and cooling bills (in reality, it may be more like 35%+), if you don’t I’ll pay you twice the difference for 2 years. Not only are you getting a new, first-quality furance virtually free, plus a first-quality heat pump at a great price, I guarantee you’ll lower your heating and cooling bills by at least 25% or I’ll pay you double your savings for 2 years. (This alone should convince you that these systems are some of the very best quality and most efficient available). But you’ve got to act fast ... call me at 946-1000 right now! This offer ends June 24th no matter what Don’t wait to call me. Here’s why. I have only 18 of each of the 3 sizes. When all of the air conditioners are sold and all the furnaces “given away” in a certain size, the “Hottest AND Coolest Deal of the Century” is over. And if I still have any of the 56 systems left on June 24th, this offer still ends. The reason is that my business only slows down for a short time. Since these furnaces cost me so little, if I’ve got any left, I’ll sell them next winter at last year’s prices and still come out ahead. So call me right now at 946-1000 Thanking you in advance, Scott Campbell Owner P.S. Remember, there’s no obligation and - even if you change your mind once I measure your house and give you the estimate - you still get that Free Gift Coupon worth $50.

Businessman killed An Aldergrove man and his brother from Kelowna died in a plane crash in Alberta. by Brent Wittmeier Postmedia Network Inc.
An Aldergrove man is one of two brothers killed in a small plane crash. Dean and Lee Sorken were killed Friday night when their plane crashed in a farmer’s field 22 kilometres northeast of Stettler, Alta., about 100 kilometres from Killam, where they grew up and were headed for a family wedding on Saturday. Dean, 44, had flown his Mooney M20C Turbo plane from Langley, B.C., stopping over in Vernon to pick up his 39-year-old brother Lee. But the brothers never came home. Dean became the owner of Real West, an equestrian and clothing business based in Aldergrove. He built corrals and helped build worldclass equestrian centres. After the crash, the wedding went
on. Speaking from Killam, Alta., Kevin said his younger brothers wouldn’t want people to be sad, but to live life with the same abandon Lee and Dean had pursued. “If they had things they wanted to do, they did it,” Kevin Sorken said of his two younger brothers. “They enjoyed life, they were full of life.” The three brothers were born and raised in an “old-style farm family,” in Killam, Alta., with countless cousins, uncles and aunts nearby. They learned about hard work and the joys of life. And they had an early love of flight. Their father was also a pilot, and the family would jump in his plane to head to air shows or other destinations. Dean and Lee both owned planes and were experienced pilots. Dean had bought his plane – the one that crashed – from Lee just a couple of years ago. Exactly what went wrong on Friday’s trip is unclear. The Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation to find out why the plane went down. Kevin said he firmly believes something went wrong with the mechanics.

A Dodge Viper lost control and rolled in the median of Highway One near 248th Street Saturday night, killing the driver, police say. The car had just sped past an unmarked RCMP cruiser minutes earlier, said Sgt. Peter Thiessen, spokesperon for the Mounties. At about 10 a.m., the Dodge sped down 56th Avenue westbound, heading for the highway onramps at 264th Street, Thiessen said. The Langley RCMP officer in the unmarked car turned around and activated his lights and sirens, but the Dodge had already vanished. The officer turned off his emergency equipment and headed onto the highway. He noticed cars slowing down near 248th Street – two miles from the onramps – and found the Dodge upside down in a ditch with the driver pinned inside. Three witnesses told police the Viper was driving very fast, about 160 km/h just before the crash. The driver was identified as Jeremy Pinette, an Abbotsford man. He was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency crews managed to get him out of the vehicle. “This is the second fatal crash in less than three hours in the Lower Mainland District that has tragically taken a life as a result of excessive speed,” said Thiessen. Pinette was a former Langley resident, whose family owns Ponds Beautiful, a plant supplier in Milner. His sister Monica Pinette has represented Canada in the Olympics in pentathlon. His family also drew attention several years ago when his father Roger complained about police blockading their street during a party by the Hells Angels, who have a clubhouse on the same road. Justin Pinette acted as a driver to and from accommodations for some visiting bikers. Any witnesses who have not spoken to a police officer are asked to call Const. Becker at Port Mann Traffic Services at 604-526-9744.

Youth defines new Parliament The stereotypical images we have of Canada’s Parliament are of a group composed mostly of men, with the old far outnumbering the young. But the stories in the past week have all been about the young, in a Parliament in which the average age of MPs dropped significantly as a result of last month’s election. The senior-dominated Senate was disrupted briefly by Brigette DePape, a 21-year-old student and page who raised a “Stop Harper” sign in an act of protest that got her fired. Less headline-grabbing but no less important was the election of the new Speaker, Conservative MP Andrew Scheer, at 32 the youngest in Canadian history. Then there’s Pierre-Luc Dusseault, the 19-year-old NDP MP who had to give up his summer job at a golf club when he unexpectedly became the youngest person ever elected to Canada’s Parliament. Those three might not have much in common aside from their age. They are, respectively, a protestor, a member of the ruling government, and a member of the opposition. But they are all well under 40 years of age. On some issues, Canadians can be divided by their party affiliation, by their religion, by the region where they grew up, or by their first language. But there are other issues that split us by age. Younger people are likely to have different opinions on the environment and on social issues than their elders. They also see and interact with the world in different ways. Young people, especially those still in their teens and 20s, grew up in an era defined by prosperity and boom times and now find themselves living in a much more uncertain world. They have been defined by wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, not Vietnam or Korea – or the Second World War. How this new cohort will shape Canada will be seen, perhaps for the first time, in this new Parliament. – M.C.

Planning shortsighted
Dear Editor, In Langley we have a problem with long term planning, in our schools, in Township government, and in collaboration of the two. The school board was officially told that poor long term planning and failure to have a healthy level of questioning has been a part of the current devastating situations, creating uncertainty in our schools. Township council repeatedly adjusts long term community plans and zoning (which the people count on), and display obtuseness towards ANY level of questioning, creating uncertainty for citizens. We have a problem in the Township of Langley; it is lack of true long planning for the future. Some on council are misguided in thinking (long term) unplanned development will help with long term budgets, while some trustees feel school closures are good for the district education. I would no sooner put revenues from drug dealing as good for our community as close more schools or quickly jam in more controversial developments. I have sat in council meetings, listening to “surprised” talk about money being
required to better control traffic around now overcrowded schools, and now the school district has decided to switch school location properties, as if these decisions should be ad hoc and without community input? How can the people of Langley thrive in our community when we don’t know which schools will close to pay for operating the new ones, or if a high rise will appear in our backyard? How can we be sure of strong fiscal management when we are unsure of school budgets, or we are told we need to spend millions on an overpass that goes nowhere? Don’t show me a Mufford overpass without a solid, comprehensive, long term plan around it, and don’t discuss closing another school unless you can assure me of the next 10 years. While both the school district and the Township of Langley claim to have a plan, it seems to change every month, leaving residents living in a pool of uncertainty, rising taxes, and community chaos. Consider this in the November elections: so far, proven results of the old-school leaders is uncertainty, and that is the only thing certain in Langley. Mike MacDonald, Langley
Transportation taxes

Vehicle levies, road pricing, and tolls are flagrant insults to those who
live in rural areas and have no viable option but to use our own vehicles. You cannot keep digging into our rural pockets to subsidize projects that, for the most part, service only those living north of the Fraser. Debbie Atkinson Langley

Willoughby
Park name questioned ’Grove pest population exploding Dear Editor: When the Langley School Board ignored all the suggestions to name a new school in Willoughby for a Willoughby pioneer or Willoughby related geographic name, I didn’t say anything, but now that the Willoughby clear-cut pave-over council has named a new park in Willoughby after the same name, enough is enough. This park should be named after a Willoughby pioneer. Seems that the council wants to also pave over Willoughby history. Sort of ironic as one of the more appropriate names could have been Jack Bray, an early member of the council who donated the land for the Willoughby Hall. Probably the easiest way to name new schools, parks would be to use the name of the road that it is being built on, so this park could be named for Scholes Road (83rd Avenue). Dear Editor, The last thing Aldergrove needs is a chance to attract more rats and mice with sloppy wet kitchen garbage put out in a “green can.” Local stores can hardly keep up with the demand for traps, poison, etc. to combat the epidemic of rats and mice in this area. Who thought this through? Is it someone in the pest control business, which could profit from encouraging more of a feeding frenzy for these pests? Or a print company business, with several costly print projects to fill our recycle cans? Pat Stockbrocks, Aldergrove

Local Roadshow Expert Examines Some Gold Jewellery
After many very successful shows around the Lower Mainland, The Roadshow is now here in Langley, BC. So you had better search through your attics and garages, go through your lock boxes and jewellery, because you may be sitting on a small fortune and not even know it! Roadshow experts are here to examine all your antiques, collectibles, gold and silver.
jewellery she was never going to wear anyways. Expert Elijah Gold explains, “We have noticed a substantial increase in the amount of precious metals such as gold and silver coming to the Roadshow, which makes sense considering how high it’s currently trading at. He added, “The Roadshow is great because it puts money in people’s pockets, especially during such hard times. Lots of items that are just sitting around collecting dust in basements and jewellery boxes can be exchanged for money, on the spot!”
During a show near Toronto, a woman came in with a jewellery box that she had just inherited from her late aunt. “I don’t wear jewellery,” explained Barbara Engles, “so it was an easy decision to come down to the Roadshow to sell it”. She was very excited when she was able to walk away with a cheque for over $2,100 for
At another Roadshow event, a woman, named Mira Kovalchek, walked in with a tin full of hundreds of old coins that were given to her as a young child by her grandfather. She finally decided to come in to the Roadshow and see what he had given her. She was ecstatic to learn she had coins dating back to the late 1800’s, some of which were extremely rare.
Roadshow consultant Perry Bruce explains “We had uncovered an 1871 Queen Victoria 50 Cent piece, valued at over $2,000!! She had a nice assortment of coins that were not rare dates, but she was able to sell them for their silver content”. She explains, “I never would have thought that my old tin of coins was worth so much! I can finally afford

to renovate my kitchen”. Perry Bruce continued, “Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value”.
Experts at the Roadshow will evaluate and examine your items, FREE OF CHARGE, as well as educate you on them. The Roadshow sees hundreds of people during a one week event, and they have been travelling across Canada to different cities and towns, searching for your forgotten treasures. Trains, dolls, toys, old advertising signs, pocket watches, porcelain and bisque dolls, pretty much everything can be sold at the Roadshow. Any early edition Barbie’s are sought after by the Roadshow collectors, as well as a variety of Dinky Toys and Matchbox cars. Lionel Trains and a
variety of tin toys can also fetch a price, especially if they are in their original box or in mint condition. If a collector is looking for one of your collectibles, they often make offers to buy them.
A man brought in a 1950’s Marx Tin Toy Robot, in fairly good condition, still in its original box. We were able to locate a collector for that specific toy within minutes, and that gentleman went home with over $700 for his Toy Robot and a few other small toys. So whether you have an old toy car, a broken gold chain, or a Barbie sitting in the closet, bring it down to the Roadshow, we will take a look at it for FREE and it could put money in your pocket!
See you at the Roadshow!

Olson may have had the easiest team recruitment in Langley Relay for Life history. Arne asked fellow flyers about doing Relay for Life and received an enthusiastic response. “It was like throwing a lot of gasoline on a fire,” Olson chuckled. Olson said they all have their personal reasons for doing the cancer fundraiser, further testament to the far-reaching nature of the disease. “Arne was very persuasive,” quipped Dave Christian, one of the pilots who was at the Relay during the early morning hours, more than 10 hours after the walk had started. The members enjoyed some early morning coffee, and seem to have used the event as an
opportunity for their usual practice when flying, which is to gather and tell a few stories. “Some of them are true, some of them aren’t,” said pilot Ken Ayre. The group has done flights out as far as the Hope area and went to Vargas Island recently, where 19 aircraft took part in an outing. Sometimes they are not the only ones out there. Helicopter pilots are the only other flyers who can land in these remote sites. There are some gravel bar pilots around Kamloops who use sites in the Thompson River but it’s not a common kind of flying. “There’s just endless opportunities for aviation in areas most people couldn’t get to,” Olson said about the appeal of this flying.

The rubberized track and artificial turf at McLeod Athletic Park were off limits to pets during Langley’s recent Relay for Life, with a few notable exceptions. This rule didn’t apply to working dogs, of course. So it was no surprise to see cancer survivor Zosia Ettenberg there with her four-legged companion Rumour. Likewise, Peggy Howard was also there with her dog Brody. But Brody’s no working dog. So why was the eight-year-old golden retriever allowed to be part of the 12-hour relay fundraiser?

Where some people would see just a sandbar jutting out of the Fraser River, they see a landing strip. The Gravel Bar Cowboys were one of the brand new teams in the 2011 Langley Relay for Life, which raised money for the Canadian Cancer Society on May 27 and 28. The Cowboys are a collection of friends united by their love of flying, especially around the mighty Fraser. Team captain Arne Olson said they are expert gravel bar flyers, doing things others wouldn’t dare, such as landing where the water starts and continuing onto the gravel bars. It allows them to land in very short distances/small areas. The water also helps slow them down. “They can land and take off in just several hundred feet,” Olson said. This was the first time Olson has captained a Relay team. He said he felt it was quite a bit of responsibility – despite the fact that he actually created the Langley Relay seven years ago. His son Joel Olson was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a bone cancer, when he was just 14 years old. Now 29, Joel walked in the survivor lap of this year’s Relay with his own child on his shoulders. Arne Olson brought Langley’s Relay into being as a way to give something back to the community. In recent years, he’s stepped back from his hands-on organization efforts, so

Health
No time for ‘why me’ A Brookswood woman is battling Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Experience the Beauty in Education MA Academy has to offer.
by Heather Colpitts
hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com
Canadian Sue Rodriguez fought in the courts in the 1980s and ’90s for the right to end her life before it was ended by amyotropic lateral schlerosis (ALS). “I remember thinking, ‘Oh boy, that is one disease I would not want to get,’” said Brookswood resident Elaine Welch. Years later, she couldn’t handle a brisk walk while on a February 2010 cruise to Panama. And between June and November, she fell about 15 times. There was testing by a specialist, and when the diagnosis came back as ALS, her doctor said that couldn’t be right. So it was off for more testing. Elaine had ALS. The mother of two sons and grandmother of three has never gone in for the “Why me?”

Elaine Welch has found comfort in her faith since being diagnosed with ALS.
A walk for those battling Lou Gehrig’s disease
The walk begins at 11 a.m. with preliminaries and registration starting at 10 a.m. at Bear Creek Park, 13700 88 Ave. Proceeds go to the ALS Society of British Columbia & Yukon. The society supports people with the disease, funds research into a cure and works to increase awareness about ALS. ALS is a rapidly progressive, neuromuscular disease that attacks the motor neurons that transmit electrical impulses from the brain to the voluntary muscles. The muscles lose strength, atrophy and die. ALS is terminal and can hit anyone at any time, regardless of age, gender, or ethnic origin. The cause is unknown. Elaine Welch is like 90 per cent of sufferers. She had no family history of the disease. Those with a family history tend to have a faster progression.

‘Oh boy, that is one disease I would not want to get’ …continued from A19
In fact, she’s taken on the role of comforting family and friends, determined to maintain a positive attitude and continue living as much as the terminal illness will allow. So she still cooks but has taken to giving lessons to her husband John. “I’m teaching him how to cook now, to make it easier for him if I go fast, so he can carry on,”
she said. The ALS Society has connected them with physical therapy. And Elaine has attended an ALS support group and has found others in Langley with the disease. ALS strikes about one in 50,000 people. Elaine can’t do as much as she would like. The naturally independent woman has to watch her exertion.
“If you overdo it, the muscles will die faster,” she explained. Elaine admits one of the big hurdles was coming to terms with having to use a walker in public. There is one medication but at $1,000 per month, she’s opted not to take it. Elaine and John try not to dwell on what’s ahead. “I’m trying not to look too far down the road, otherwise it’s
too overwhelming,” said John. She doesn’t believe researchers will find a cure in her lifetime, but she supports efforts like the ALS Walk which helps fund scientific work. The Welches are Jehovah’s Witnesses, and her faith has comforted her. “I’m not afraid of death,” Elaine said. They believe that God will create a paradise on Earth and her
faith teaches her that, even if she has died, she will be resurrected when it happens. She just has one hope about when it happens, so she can spend eternity with the man she loves (not possible if he remarries). “My problem is I have this gorgeous husband,” she said with a chuckle. “I want him to stay single until the resurrection.”

In addition to introducing players and coaches to the community Thursday at the Langley Events Centre’s banquet room, the Langley Rivermen unveiled their new mascot. If you win more battles, you are probably going to win the game.” Joining O’Rourke on the bench as an assistant coach will be Roy Henderson’s eldest son, Bobby. The 29-year-old finished his first full season coaching the Mission Ice Breakers of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League. He was also heavily involved as a scout in the BCHL and with
his family’s business, Global Sports Camps. Bobby Henderson played five seasons with the BCHL’s Chilliwack Chiefs, serving one year as captain, before moving on to a scholarship with the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Someone Bobby Henderson is familiar with will share office space with him. Jordan Emmerson, who coached with Henderson with the Ice Breakers last year, has signed on as an assistant coach, as well. Emmerson spent two years in the BCHL before earning a scholarship with the University of Alaska Fairbanks. There, he earned two degrees, one in kinesiology and the other in psychology. Emmerson’s primary role with the Rivermen will be strength and conditioning. The Rivermen will have a solid nucleus of returning players from last year’s Langley Chiefs squad.
They include defencemen Brandon Scholten and Tyler Miller, and forwards Mason Blacklock, Michael Tebbutt, Darnell Dyck, Kit Sitterley, Josh Hansen, Kody Dhaliwal, and Austin Plevy. Plevy, a centre and Langley resident heading into his sophomore year in the BCHL, said having “old friends” coming back is good for him and the team. “It’s a change but I think it’s going to be exciting,” said Plevy, who is hoping to play a bigger role with the team this year. “Last year was great being a 16year-old rookie and everything. I felt I had a good year but this year I want to step up and be more of a go-to guy.” On Thursday, the team signed 11 new players, including Jackson Playfair, son of Heat head coach Jim Playfair. continued on page A26…

The Langley Jr. Thunder ran out of steam in the third period of its B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League game versus the Burnaby Lakers Sunday at Bill Copeland Arena. The Lakers out-scored the Jr. Thunder 5-2 in the final frame to win 10-8. The Jr. Thunder led 6-5 after two periods of play. The loss foiled the Jr. Thunder’s efforts of reaching the .500 plateau. Langley’s record dropped to 4-6, good for fifth in the BCJALL standings. Brandon Bull with a hat trick, Zack Porter with two goals and an assist, and Reegan Comeault with a goal and three assists led Langley’s attack in a losing effort. ••• A finish doesn’t get more dramatic than the one that unfolded Thursday at the Langley Events Centre. Bull scored a powerplay goal with a second left in the contest, snapping an 8-8 tie and lifting Langley to a 9-8 win over the Port Coquitlam Saints. “It was a dramatic win,” Jr. Thunder coach Chris Levis reported. “We ended up with a good bounce that found its way into [Bull’s] stick and he took a smart shot to beat [Poco goaltender Carson] Michaud, who had played well all game.” Langley trailed 7-5 after two periods of play before battling back in the final frame, out-scoring PoCo 4-1 over the final 20 minutes of action. “I think our team showed some signs of fatigue last night against Poco,” Levis said. “We’ve had a heavy schedule the last 10 days but the guys rose above, played tough mentally and stuck around. Lacrosse is a game of swings, and you could tell the momentum had swung our way the last five minutes of the game. I liked our chances even if we had gone to overtime.” Comeault scored twice and assisted on four Jr. Thunder goals, including Bull’s game winner. Adam Will tallied a pair of third-period goals, while Danny Shields, Dylan Quinn, Kevin Lemond, and James Jackson also found the net for the Jr. Thunder. The Thunder outshot the Saints 51-41, including 23-8 in the third period. Poco remained winless at 0-9 with the loss. After a stumbling start to their season, the Jr. Thunder recently hit a winning stride with victories over Poco, Nanaimo, and New Westminster heading into Thursday’s game. The greatest improvement has been the Thunder’s goaltending. Ryley Brown has been nothing short of sensational between the pipes during the recent hot streak.

E.WEIR MUIR
February 22, 1921 - May 22, 2011
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father Weir Muir. He is lovingly remembered by his two sons Gavin (Susan) and Cameron (Linda) along with grandchildren David and Jennifer as well as many relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Kathleen (Kathie). Born in Nanaimo, B.C. he began his long career with the Royal Bank of Canada in 1938. In 1941, he enlisted in the RCAF and in 1942 he was posted overseas joining the #410 RCAF Night Fighter Squadron. After the war, he returned to the Royal Bank of Canada working in Nanaimo, Kemano, Youbou, Kerrisdale, New Westminster and Langley branches as the local manager. He retired from banking in 1981. He was active in many community activities in Langley including co-founding the Langley Chapter of SPEBSQSA (Langley’s First Capital Chorus) in 1969 along with singing lead with his own barbershop quartet The Fraser Highway Men. He spent 9 years on the Langley Memorial Hospital Board, 10 years as President of the Langley City Parks Foundation, and 4 years on the Fraser Valley Regional Library Board. He served a 2 1/2 year term as the President of the Langley Chamber of Commerce, not to mention his support of both Kiwanis and Rotary service clubs. He was also a long serving member of the Eureka Lodge #103 and lent his support to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #21. He was also known as “Langley’s Singing Alderman” during his 9 years as a Langley City Alderman. A life-long songwriter, composer and singer he spent his later years in the pursuit of these hobbies and also found time to write a monthly story for the Seniors Choice Newspaper for over 18 years. He shall be greatly missed. A celebration of his life will held at the Sharon United Church in Langley on Thursday June 9, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Agency. May you rest in peace, dear father Until we meet again

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! June 7
