“I want to see something life-giving and good arise from the seeds of this tragedy,” Carol Barber said. She offered the possibility of forgiveness to the two men who killed her son Kyle Barber, even as one was sentenced to life in prison Friday. A man who can be identified only as AJ was found guilty of first degree murder, and received a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no parole for 25 years. With time served awaiting trial, AJ will be eligible for release in 2034. The killer, who intimidated his victims by showing them his Red Scorpion gang tattoos during the attack on March 28, 2009, cannot be named. BC Supreme Court Justice Sunni StrombergStein placed a publication ban on his name as the sentencing hearing began in a Vancouver courtroom. AJ has another trial approaching. Gregory Barrett, who helped in the home invasion but didn’t directly attack Barber, was convicted of manslaughter. The duo burst into the home Barber shared

Portraits treasured
Langley Fine Arts School students drew 36 portraits of deceased Canadian soldiers between November 2008 and November 2009 that were displayed and garnered national attention. Those works will now part of the permanent collection of the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa and will be shipped off at a special ceremony this Friday. • More online

Highway marked to honour war dead
A stretch of highway in Langley is dedicated as a memorial to fallen soldiers. by Matthew Claxton
In 2007, a part of Highway 401 in Toronto was given that name. The recent dedication was a dream of the Ubique Unit of the 3rd Canadian Army Veteran Motorcycle Units, a group of veterans and supporters who ride
bikes and support communities. They wanted to see another such highway in the west. “It is important to salute the sacrifices of the fallen men and women who have given their lives in Afghanistan and honour
the Silver Cross families they have left behind,” said Ubique vice president Barry Drews. The group worked with the Honour House Society and West Vancouver MLA Joan McIntyre to make the dedication a reality.
mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
Part of the Trans-Canada Highway running through Langley got a new name on Thursday, dubbed a new “Highway of Heroes.” The section of road was officially renamed by the provincial Ministry of Transportation in a ceremony in New Westminster with the families of soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan. The highway will memorialize the 13 B.C. soldiers who lost their lives in that conflict. One was Aldergrove’s Master Corporal Colin Bason, who was killed by a roadside bomb in 2007. The bomb also killed a translator working with the Canadian Forces. Bason left behind a longtime girlfriend and an infant daughter. It is the second Highway of Heroes named in Canada.
Search and Rescue
Lost Langley hikers were prepared Two Langley residents were found after getting lost on a mountain near Chilliwack. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
A search for missing hikers had a happy ending Sunday morning, with a young man and woman from Langley found safe on Ford Mountain. The Upper Fraser Valley RCMP was called by the father of a 21-year-old woman. She had gone hiking up to Williams
Peak with a 25-year-old man, but had not returned. After the 10:45 p.m. phone call, three search and rescue teams were deployed within about 15 minutes. The woman’s father and a friend, both experienced hikers who knew the mountain, went along to help. The two were found just after 9 a.m., near the place they had entered the bush. They had become disoriented and lost their way, and had decided to spend the night on the mountain to start fresh the next morning.
The pair woke up between 3 and 4 a.m. and started down the mountain again. Both were fine, having come well prepared for the outing. “They were offered food, but declined graciously and said they had already eaten a good breakfast,” said Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth, speaking for the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP. It is the second incident in 10 days in which the search and rescue teams have gone looking for missing hikers in the area. In both cases, the hikers were prepared for emergencies, and were found safe and well.

Swimming hole dries up An era has come to an end at Aldergrove Lake Regional Park. Over the weekend, work crews continued to fill in the lake’s former swimming hole, which has been a gathering place for local families for more than four decades. The concrete-lined bowl has been filled with water annually for 40 years, and was almost shut down last year, amid concerns over health issues and environmental concerns. Last July, the “lake” part of Aldergrove Lake was used for the swimming portion of the triathlon event during the 2010 BC Summer Games, hosted by Langley Township.

No confusion in referendum The HST referendum is effectively underway right now. Here’s the question: “Are you in favour of extinguishing the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and reinstating the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) in conjunction with the GST (Goods and Services Tax)? (Yes/No).” Actually, it’s a straightforward question. You can vote Yes to “extinguish” (kill, drop, end, remove, dump… replace with your own euphemism, if you wish) the HST. Or you can vote No to “not extinguish” it (keep it). But with all the noise about how difficult it is, some folks may start thinking it really is more difficult than it seems – and they may begin to second-guess their response. The referendum process is easy, too. Elections BC was to begin mailing out ballots on June 13, and most eligible voters in the province are expected to receive them by June 24. Those who don’t get their ballots by then need to get in touch with Elections BC by July 8. The only tough part: marked ballots need to be back to Elections BC by July 22, whether or not there is a postal strike. The hardest part of it all is trying to understand potential impacts of extinguishing or not extinguishing the HST – far more difficult than that actual referendum question itself. The government has had nearly a year to explain, and still hasn’t done so sufficiently. Premier Christy Clark’s eleventhhour manipulations to convince taxpayers to vote No have served to make it still more difficult to calculate ramifications. And has Opposition Leader Adrian Dix got a hidden agenda for the PST? Or is that more BC Liberal hype? It’s expected to take weeks to count the referendum ballots – results aren’t expected to be announced before Aug. 11. Here’s hoping the results are as confusing as the question – and not as confusing as the politicians have made it. – B.G.

Canucks
Sometimes hockey matters
Dear Editor, Sometimes I watch hockey. In fact, I do whenever the Canucks play. Sometimes they make it to the finals. I’d like to say sometimes they win the cup. Sometimes the highs of expectation bring the lows of defeat. Sometimes the highs of victory bring sore throats. Sometimes when I am watching I am entertained. Sometimes I watch millionaire players skate to and fro without so much as a successful pass or an on-goal shot. Sometimes this frustrates me, but sometimes I just nod off in my chair. Sometimes I am entertained by the whole
package. Sometimes even CBC gets it right. Sometimes rules apply and sometimes they don’t. Sometimes a slash is not a rule during the play and sometimes it is after a whistle is blown. Sometimes players get hurt. Sometimes subsequent discipline is lacking. Sometimes I wonder why we fans put up with such foolishness. Sometimes I consider not watching the game any more. Sometimes I wonder about things to do with NHL hockey. Sometimes I don’t. Brian G. Wood, Langley [Note: A fuller version of this letter is online at www.langleyadvance.com.]
Referendum
Facts favour HST over prior system Dear Editor, Now that the referendum for the HST is coming closer, there seems to be a lot more letters in the paper advising us on what to do. It seems most want to vote YES and go back to the PST system. Here are some facts, not opinions, by people who know finance and business. The HST will make business more competitive, reduce the administrative costs, reduce the cost of producing goods, and create more jobs. I think the problem with our society is that we all want instant gratification; if we don’t see a benefit immediately, we aren’t in favour. We also think we are entitled to get everything and not have to pay. We complain about long wait times for surgeries, small schools being closed down, funding cuts to programs, and yet, when the government sees an opportunity to fix this problem
long term, we complain about that, too. At 10 per cent, the HST will cost us less for most things than the PST/GST system. So yes, when you go out for dinner or get a hair cut you pay an extra few dollars, but does that warrant going back to the PST and costing taxpayers billions of dollars? Are we really willing to put our economy on a downward trend, and fork over billions to go back to an old system, just to teach the government a lesson? Sounds a little petty to me, and not at all money wise. Instead of thinking only about ourselves, maybe we should look at the big picture, and see what benefits the province the most. In the long run, that will benefit you the most, as well. Vote NO to going to back to the old ways. Township politics
Dear Editor, My letter regarding the budget process at Langley Township council [Budget council responsibility, April 29 Letters, Langley Advance] precipitated a rush of letters, both for and against my position. I appreciate the concerns raised and the various points of view on my candidacy for mayor. I believe the democratic process is well served by encouraging debate around the import-
ant issues facing Langley Township. I am writing this letter to clarify my position on a very important matter that may have been misinterpreted. It was stated by Robert Moats [Backrooms no place for decision-making, May 17 Letters, www.langleyadvance.com] that I would support the “existing” council, and by doing so, I “will obediently take direction from the backroom” as a

Gas fuels better alternatives
Dear Editor, Ms Hogan’s concern over the increase in gas exploration in the Horn River Basin of B.C. and impending harm to air quality in the Lower Mainland is emotional, rather than factual [Easier gas brings dark days, May 31 Letters, Langley Advance]. For the most part, the gas is being pre-sold to Asia, at $12 a unit, as opposed to North America’s $4 price. A check of the numerous air quality web pages and recent reports will show the air quality in the GVRD has improved dramatically since 1988, and continues to do so. I cannot comment on the condition of the Burrard facility, but the Sumas expansion and cancelling of the project was driven by emotion and a decided lack of facts. As to alternative fuels to power Co-Gens, again no facts: currently, hog fuel, gas, and coal are used – coal or gas being the only ones that can generate enough BTU’s required for a Co-GEN large enough for the population of the Lower Mainland. rubber stamp for some of the councilors. Every three years, the voters go to the polls to vote for a mayor and eight councilors. Some of the faces may be the same, but with the addition of a new mayor and/or councilor(s), “council” is renewed. Unlike the premier, the mayor does not have the luxury of selecting his cabinet. After November’s election, there is an expectation that the mayor will work with the duly elected council. Provincial legislation for local government, the Community Charter, states that the mayor must “provide leadership to council” and “reflect the will of council.” The mayor has one vote on council. After allowing healthy debate on issues facing council, a vote is called, and the outcome becomes the will of council. I believe that, for Langley Township to move forward and brand itself as the very best place to live and work, we need a mayor who speaks for council. This is not a “rubber stamp,” but good government. Jack Froese, Langley Marketplace B-Section* Sherwin Williams* Staples* The Province Sports* *in selected areas

Langley City firefighters are going to help people work up an appetite at Community Day on June 18. Each year the local firefighters put on the barbecue that raises funds for the Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. But the department also puts on the firefighter challenge, where people can get a taste of the work involved in being a firefighter. For the past few years, the firefighter challenge was for children. They could dress up in a child-sized fire coat and helmet and do the challenge, a fire-related obstacle course. But each year, adults would ask if they could do something similar. “There’s always been this ‘Oh, wouldn’t it be neat if we could do a firefighter challenge for the adult side of things,” explained firefighter Dave Skidmore. He said there used to be bed races for adult teams. The adult fire challenge is intended to fill the gap, offering a friendly competition for the grown-ups. In it, they will do such things as a dummy drag, hose tossing and rolling, spraying a charged hose and more. For this first adult challenge, the fire department has lined up teams. Skidmore said City Mayor Peter Fassbender readily signed on and will be challenging RCMP Supt. Derek Cooke. “All six [City] councillors are going to challenge six police officers,” he added. The action starts at 2 p.m. The firefighters’ other big contribution to Community Day is the annual barbecue. “Typically we go through 900 hamburgers and 700 hot dogs,” Skidmore explained. All the food is donated so that all the funds raised can go to the hospital auxiliary. “Last year’s total was almost $3,500,” he noted. The firefighters recently conducted their spring inspections of elementary schools within the City and it’s then when they also judge their cleanest school contest. The contest is a way to encourage kids to take pride in their community. The winner is acknowledged at Community Day. Nicomekl Elementary is this year’s winner.

’Bellies early barrage overwhelms Jr. Thunder Langley fell behind 5-0 after the first period. by Troy Landreville sports@langleyadvnace.com
Play a full 60 minutes; put your game faces on – those sports clichés certainly applied to the Langley Jr. Thunder’s 11-7 loss to the New Westminster Salmonbellies Sunday at the Langley Events Centre. The Thunder didn’t play the full 60, nor did they have their game faces on (whatever that looks like) – falling behind 5-0 to the Salmonbellies after the first period. By the time the Jr. Thunder found their form, it was too late. Langley had the edge over the final two periods, out-scoring the visitors 7-6. “New West came out and played hard right from the beginning of the game and I don’t think we were were ready,” Jr. Thunder head coach Chris Levis said. “I’m not sure if it was a bad warmup, or nerves, or what it was. You have to be prepared right from the first whistle and the guys found out.” Levis said the Jr. Thunder players have to be ready from the start of the game because they don’t know where they’ll be later on. A highlight was yet another strong effort from Reegan Comeault, who stands second in BC Junior A Lacrosse League scoring with 58 points in 12 games.

Langley Athletic FC got a goal from Nate Turner, set up by David Malamura, and that was all the local squad needed to beat the visiting Victoria Highlanders Saturday, June 11, at McLeod Athletic Park. “I don’t think we played particularly well,” LAFC head coach Pat Rohla said of his team’s 1-0 victory. “They [the Highlanders] are very organized and hard to break down, and it was one of those games where we had to remain organized. Courtney Davis will go from being a Dino to a Spartan when the next Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s volleyball season rolls around. Trinity Western University women’s volleyball coach Ryan Hofer recently announced the signing of libero Courtney Davis, out of the Dinos club in Calgary. “We are excited to have Courtney join the Spartan family,” Hofer said. “There is no doubt in our minds that she is one of the best in her age group in the country. She possesses the skills we are looking for in this position, she is an outstanding passer and fantastic defender, she takes charge of the back-court and she’s a fierce competitor. We are looking forward to the impact she is going to make in our program.” The 5’7” graduate of StrathconaTweedsmuir School Courtney Davis comes to the Langley-based Trinity Western University recruit campus after an illustrious career at both the high school and club level. In high school, Davis’ team won the 2010 provincial championship, a silver medal at the ’09 provincial championship and, along the way, three consecutive league championships (’08, ’09 and ’10). Her high school team also earned a gold medal at the 2010 Western Canadian Independent Schools Tournament where Davis was named Tournament MVP and earned the award for best server. Playing with the Dinos women’s volleyball club, Davis won the Alberta provincial championship with both the U18 and U17 teams and, most recently, her U18 Dinos finished in a tie for fifth at the 2011 national championships in Abbotsford. Prior to joining the Dinos, Davis played three years for the Elite Volleyball Club (now the High Performance Volleyball Club), winning a provincial title with the U15 team and a provincial silver medal with the U16 team, in which she was named to the tournament all-star team. “I’m excited to contribute to this close-knit, successful, and extremely well-coached volleyball team, as well as obtain a highly respected degree from a university that shares my values and beliefs,” said Davis, who plans to study psychology at Trinity Western. Off the court, Davis has participated in a number of missions trips, two to Mexico and one to Columbia, as well as being a first class honours student from Grades 7 through 12.

“Reegan’s been great,” Levis said. “He’s been a go-to, goal-scoring guy all through his career, and he’s one of the few who has gone up to next level and has actually been a goal-scorer. He’s embraced that [role] well. He is still very young and playing a mature role on our team.” Jr. Thunder 10, Port Coquitlam Saints 8 The big period for the Jr. Thunder was the second, in which they out-scored the Saints 6-3 on their way to a narrow victory Friday at the Poco Rec Centre. Keenan Lambright picked up the win in net for the Jr. Thunder while Comeault led the offence with three goals and three assists. Adam Will found the net twice for the Jr. Thunder.
“We knew from the get-go we had to be focused, and when we needed the goals, we got them,” Levis said. ••• Just past the midway point of the season, the Jr. Thunder are sitting with five wins and seven losses, and stand fifth in the BCJALL standings. This is the most wins the team has had in a single season since 2005. I think the guys are learning their roles,” Levis said. “I like our roster and I like the guys we have on our team. We have a good solid base to build from.” The Jr. Thunder host the Burnaby Lakers tonight, Tuesday, June 14. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.

DOVE, Donald Spencer September 9, 1917 – June 11, 2011 Donald Spencer Dove passed away peacefully on June 11 at the age of 93. Born in Saskatchewan to Spencer and Dorothy Dove, Donald is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lydia, daughter Dorothy, and sons Danny, Leroy, Stephen, Peter and David, their spouses, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Donald was a consummate handy man, a printer by trade and a carpenter by passion. Always hard at work, Donald also gave himself in faithful service to God, to nature photography, and to exploring the Great Outdoors. Donald was not a man of many words. His loyalty, generosity, hard work, warm smile and insatiable curiosity will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held on Thursday June 16, 1:30 pm at Northside Community Church, Mission, BC.
LOCKEN, Henny,
Dec. 21, 1921- June 9, 2011 Born north of the Artic Circle December 21, 1921 in Melbu Norway. Mum will be greatly missed by her 7 kids, Barb (Del); Judy VanderVeen (Ted); Kurt (Brenda); Kim (Carol)); Karl (Tina); Sherry (Greg) and Cindy, 5 grandkids Shawn, Elan (Mike), Aaron, Julia (Sean); Kevin (Candace) and 3 great grandkids, 1 sister Solveig and brother Arne; niece; nephews & friends. Mom came to Canada at 9 years old with her Mom to be with her Dad. Mom grew up in Maillardville, in time joined the Navy. After she married she again spent time in Maillardville. 54 years ago she moved the family to Langley, she stayed at the same place until she died. Mom always thought Langley was a great place to raise kids. Mom made sure we all had a great childhood. Mom enjoyed life to the fullest. Knitting, making dolls and gardening were some of her favorite things. We will celebrate Mom’s life Saturday, June 18th at 1:00pm in her much loved garden. Motto to live by: Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, rather skid sideways chocolate in hand, wine in the other, totally worn out and screaming woohoo What A Ride!
