Students from four local elementaries put their French language skills to the test. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com
Verb, en Francais, was the word inside the Maple Ridge Secondary gymnasium. Canadian Parents for French Ridge Meadows sponsored a district-wide Verbathon competition involving French Immersion (FI) students from four elementaries: Pitt Meadows, Eric Langton, Laityview, and Golden Ears. While being cheered on by boisterous schoolmates, students from Grades 2 to 7 raced against the clock, and each other, during an event focused on conjugating French verbs. Students sorted cards with different verb forms, and had to place them as quickly as possible in the correct order. Even FI students from Maple Ridge Secondary volunteered as timers and judges during last Thursday’s competition. Verbathon is the invention of FI teacher Emmanual Escueta, who coordinated and emceed the district competition. Escueta, who teaches Grade 2 and 3 FI students at Irvine Elementary in Port Coquitlam, created Verbathon as an occupational survival tool in the classroom back when he was teaching in Manitoba.
“I had a very challenging first year of teaching,” he recalled. “I had students who I had to really work with to try to motivate. These were Grade 7 and 8 kids. I was challenged to… become more and more inventive on how I deliver the curriculum.” In any language, verbs are vital, and most who have taken French in school have what Escueta describes as “post traumatic verb-learning stress syndrome.” He decided to address an issue that he has to deal with every day in the classroom. The challenge was, how does he deliver the competition in such a way that would motivate students while at the same time allowing them to have fun? He came up with the INFINITE principle. INFINITE is an acronym for INclusive, Fun, INteractive, Integrative, Teamwork, and Empowerment. “It makes for a very powerful teaching tool in the classroom,” Escueta said. From there, he devised Verbathon, which has since reached beyond B.C. boundaries and now includes schools in Quebec, Ontario, and the U.S. There are even Spanish and German versions of Verbathon. “It’s like a snowball that’s gathering more and more steam,” said Escueta, who holds a national competition every two years.

Alison Dawn Menz
by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
At 38, Alison Dawn Menz is graduating.
The Maple Ridge resident, originally from the Pasqua Reserve in Saskatchewan, received the Si: yam Cultural Leadership Award at Wednesday night’s school district 42’s Aboriginal Achievement Awards for her work helping students on the Katzie Reserve. Menz’ ultimate goal is to become an aboriginal support worker. She said she feels aboriginal students
could relate to her because of her First Nations heritage and the “rough” background she and many First Nations have had. Menz went back to school last September to complete her Grade 12 education, and she expected to be there for a few years. But, to her own surprise, she was able to complete all requirements in one year, and was also awarded a
graduation award at Wednesday’s ceremony. “I didn’t think it would happen so quickly,” Menz said. She is coming up to her threeyear sobriety in August, and finishing high school and planning for her career as an aboriginal support worker is “all a part of sobriety,” she said.

A week of activities are planned for local elders. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Looking after the environment and reaching out to a disaster zone are two of the highlights of seniors week from June 6 to 10. The seniors in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are an active group, and they have organized a week of activities during seniors week next week. The seniors society normally puts on two variety shows each year, one in the fall and one in the spring. But this spring, the flu hit the cast and with half the members down, the variety show was cancelled. As the seniors recovered, they decided they wanted to put on a smaller variety show. And learning of the disastrous earthquake and tsunami that wreaked destruction on Japan, they felt they could help. Helping Hands for Japan is the multicultural show that grew out of the desire to reach out to the devastated country. The society is hoping to

Police blotter
Resident hurt in theft by Amy Judd
ajudd@mrtimes.com
A Maple Ridge man was hit and kicked by two thieves who broke into his home at about 11:30 p.m. on May 27. Two men, both Caucasian, broke in to the house on Wharf Street through the front door, but the home owner challenged them. That’s when he was assaulted and injured, before the suspects made off with a PlayStation 3. The victim was taken to hospital, but police said his injuries are not thought to be long-lasting. One suspect is described as being 6 ft. tall, weighing about 200 pounds, with a shaved (bald) head. His partner was about 6 ft. 1 in. tall, with long curly brown hair.
Police searching for victim
A man called police on Monday night, about 8:20 p.m., saying he was assaulted by three men outside the 7-Eleven store on the Lougheed Highway at Laity Street in Maple Ridge. When the Ridge Meadows RCMP arrived, they received a report of a possible break in to a home on Cliff Avenue, where the same three men were apparently located, identified, and two were arrested on other charges. Police said it did not appear that the victim was injured, but they don’t know the full details of the assault.
Mounties are now looking for any information regarding the identity of the victim of this alleged incident.
Cyclist struck by pickup
Luckly, a 64-year-old cyclist was not seriously injured when she was hit in a crosswalk on the Lougheed Highway at 226 Street at 12:10 p.m. on Tuesday. The truck was making a left turn, and hit the woman, knocking her off her bike. She was taken to hospital by members of the B.C. Ambulance Service, and the driver of the pickup was charged with a motor vehicle act offence of failing to yield.
TV, money, jewelry stolen
Ridge Meadows RCMP think thieves forced open a garage door to a home on 224th Street on Tuesday night, and stole a number of expensive items from inside the house. The break in happened between 10:50 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on May 31, and the thieves stole a flat-screen television, money, a leaf blower, and pressure washer, and numerous pieces of expensive jewelry. Ridge Meadows RCMP are now investigating. Anyone with any information in regards to any of these, or other, crimes is asked to contact Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604463-6251. For those wishing to remain anonymous call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or leave a TIP online at www.bccrimestoppers.com. CrimeStoppers will pay a reward of up to $2,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

BE WATER WISE
CENTURY
New Lawn Sprinkling Regulations effective June 1st – September 30, 2011 Starting this year, Metro Vancouver has restricted residential lawn sprinkling hours between June 1 and September 30 to 4:00 am to 9:00 am. This is the time when the least amount of water used on lawns will evaporate and the most is absorbed. These restrictions help to ensure that the water demand does not exceed what our existing distribution system can deliver. Residential addresses: • Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 4-9 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. • Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 4-9 a.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

Non-residential addresses: • Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 1-6 a.m. Monday and Wednesday. • Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns 1-6 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday. • All non-residential addresses can also sprinkle 4-9 a.m. Friday. TIPS FOR WISE WATER USE • Leave grass clippings on your lawn to reduce evaporation. • After you’ve finished playing in an inflatable pool, re-use the water by draining it in the garden. • A healthy lawn only needs to be watered for one hour, once a week - or less if it rains. • Use a hose faucet timer so you don’t have to get up to turn on the sprinkler at 4am

The Port Haney West Coast Express station doesn’t have a parking lot causing side streets to fill up during the day.

Commuters fill Haney ‘Hide and ride’ is becoming a problem near West Coast station. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
PST – parking, safety, traffic. That’s the new subcommittee of the Port Haney Neighbourhood Initiative looking for “positive solutions” to vehiclerelated problems in the area. There’s a lot of dangerous driving in South Haney, said Yvonne Desabrais, cochair of the neighbourhood group. But there’s also a lot of dangerous foot traffic, as well. For example, people avoiding walking through the tunnel to the West Coast Express, running across the busy Haney Bypass instead. “Pedestrians can’t run 100 kilometres an hour – that’s definitely a safety concern,” Desabrais said. A recent meeting in South Haney was held to discuss how residents can resolve the parking problems resulting from commuters taking the West Coast Express. The Port Haney station was originally intended as a “drop-off-and-go” station.
Commuters, however, are doing the “hide and ride,” said TransLink spokesperson Ken Hardie. Haney resident Chris Iverson pointed out residents often can’t find parking at the south end of 223rd Street in front of their own homes in Haney because commuters have filled up the area. “[TransLink has] realized that people do park,” Iverson said. Iverson said he hoped TransLink would be able to partner up. For example, with a new hotel being planned near the station, maybe it could provide extra parking during the week. Other problems the parking, safety, and traffic subcommittee is looking at include excessive speeding and disrespect for the rules of the road, Desabrais said. The group also needs to work with the RCMP and the District of Maple Ridge to find solutions. “The focus is we’re working together to [find] positive solutions,” she said Since the Port Haney Neighbourhood Initiative began last summer, Desabrais said she’s seen improvements in the area when residents contact the District, for example, cleanups, lights fixed.

WATER MAIN FLUSHING
The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be flushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximately twelve weeks beginning March 21, 2011. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until the water clears. The City thanks residents for their patience during this routine maintenance of the water mains. If there are any questions or concerns please call 604-465-2434. Mounties aim to keep Pitt Meadows Day a family affair
Residents will get a chance to learn what the Ridge Meadows RCMP are all about during Saturday’s festivities. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
Festivals are a time for fun, family, and celebration, and the first Saturday in every June is no exception as locals gather along Harris Road and beyond to celebrate all things Pitt Meadows. However, with increased crowds comes the chance of increased calls. But the Ridge Meadows RCMP is always ready for whatever
comes their way, said RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. “Every year we kind of work into our plan that we’re going to have a zero tolerance,” she said, speaking of the potential for the presence of alcohol on the day. “We want it to be a family and community event,” Dunlop added. The Mounties will be conducting foot and vehicle patrols, and will also be out on bikes – rain or shine. They are not alone, however, as the auxiliary police officers will also have a presence. “We have some great volunteers who we can count on every year,” Dunlop said, noting that uniformed auxiliary officers complement the uniformed Mounties also present.
Dunlop said the RCMP always also be the chance for residents prepares for more calls on to meet some local officers, ask Saturday, as part of the Pitt questions, and learn more about Meadows Day plan, but she policing in our community. hopes The people police will “Every year we view the be putting event as a spotlight kind of work into one of on a few our plan that we’re family of the and fun, going to have a zero resourand not as tolerance… We want ces that an opporthey have it to be a family and access to, tunity to get into such as community event.” trouble. the RCMP Cpl. Both will be on

The Police Fair will provide people an opportunity to meet officers and learn about some of the tools used to keep the community safe. That event takes place from 11 a.m to 4 p.m.

A decision to close the Salvation Army Thrift Store on Lougheed Highway was reversed. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
The Salvation Army Thrift Store won’t be shutting down after patrons protested its impending closure. When the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Maple Ridge announced it was closing a month ago, they started getting a stream of people into the store upset at the news, said Tanya Henton, who is district manager of the Salvation Army National Recycling Operations and oversees the Ridge Meadows location. “We’re going to give it a concerted effort to stay open in the community,” Henton said. The thrift stores serve two purposes, Henton said, first to raise money for Salvation Army programs, and secondly, to have a positive influence in the community. The decision to close a thrift store location is difficult, Henton said, but the Ridge Meadows store was not generating enough funds. But when people came in saying “You can’t close, we feel you’re needed here,” the recycling operation

Residents of Pitt Meadows who want to help welcome new businesses to the region and aid in community and business development can now sign up for the new ambassador program being launched at Pitt Meadows Day this Saturday. “It’s been in our work plan since last year,” said Vicki McLeod, interim CEO of the Pitt Meadows Economic Development Corporation (PMEDC). “When we established our 2011 work plan, the ambassador program is one we wanted to implement,” she added. The goal of the program is to bring together residents, business people, and key leaders in the community to help promote Pitt Meadows as the community to live, work, play, Vicki McLeod and invest, explained McLeod. Every ambassador is a volunteer who will Interim CEO of PMEDC act as a link between residents and businesses. “An engaged community is a strong community,” said Terry Becker, chair of the PMEDC board. “The ambassador program offers business leaders and residents an opportunity to work together and celebrate what is great about doing business in Pitt Meadows.” “Be a booster for Pitt Meadows and the community and businesses,” added McLeod. Ambassadors will help to welcome new businesses and assist with business participation in community events as well as ground-breakings, grand openings, and business anniversary celebrations. They may also speak to associations, trade and business groups, and generally help raise positive awareness of PMEDC’s development initiatives. For information visit www.thinkpittmeadows.com, or at the PMEDC tent at Pitt Meadows Day on Saturday.

Dog owner found guilty of animal cruelty
A local man had taken 11 Pekingese dogs to three clinics between 2008 and 2010, all suffering from suspicious injuries.
When a Pitt Meadows resident took his seven-month old Pekingese, Bosco, to the vet on Feb. 9, 2010, the vet found the dog to be suffering from a broken hip, and two fractured hind legs. Bosco was euthanized at his owner’s request.
That vet was suspicious of the dog’s injuries, and alerted BC SPCA constables about the case. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that David Chan had taken 11 different Pekingese dogs to three different clinics between 2008 and 2010, and all had been suffering from suspicious injuries and ailments, according to Marcie Moriarty, general manager of cruelty investigations for the BC SPCA. “Some of the dogs were already deceased from their injuries when he brought them to the clinics,” added Moriarty,
“others were suffering from burns, deep cuts, hemorrhages, ulcerated lesions, inflamed ears and eyes, serious fractures and malnutrition.” Moriarty said the BC SPCA pursued animal cruelty charges and executed a warrant on Feb.
16, 2010 to take Dolly, Chan’s remaining Pekingese, into protective custody. Another Marcie Moriarty Pekingese, named Taffy, which was purchased by Chan in 2010, was also taken into SPCA care. “There is obviously a troubling

history with Mr. Chan and his animals and we are very pleased that the courts have taken this case very seriously,” said Moriarty. Chan pleaded guilty and was sentenced on May 26 to criminal code charges of causing unnecessary pain, suffering, or injury to an animal. He has now been given a lifetime ban on owning or having custody of animals, a one-year probation. He is required to perform 70 hours of community service, and must attend court-mandated counselling.

Mitch McCrea is worried about the safety of his animals after a bear killed a pygmy goat and two rabbits this week on his family’s hobby farm in the Iron Mountain area in east Maple Ridge.

The McCrea family lost two rabbits on Tuesday night and a pygmy goat on Sunday to a very hungry bear prowling in their east Maple Ridge neighbourhood. The family, who’s had a hobby farm on 287th Avenue near Dewdney Trunk Road for 16 years, is worried sick about their other animals. Marlou McCrea can’t understand why the bear, that’s been destroying items in their yard, won’t go into a trap laden with smelly bear treats. They’ve laid out herring, dog food, tuna, and other items they thought bears liked. “He’s not going into a trap that has a smorgasboard of food,” she said. The bear killed the McCrea’s pygmy
goat late Sunday night, and, worried about the safety of their other two goats, they relocated the animals off site. McCrea said she can’t understand why the bear isn’t spooked by their rottweiler, which has always kept other bears away. “I’m just so scared,” she said of what she described as a “whacked out” animal. McCrea said the situation is her “worst nightmare” and their country lifestyle has been “shattered.” McCrea is also worried they’ll go into the yard at night and come across the bear unexpectedly. The McCreas have been in contact with conservation officers, who subsequently placed a bear trap on their property. But the family would like to have tracking dogs looking for the bear as it seems like it doesn’t seem deterred by their dog and not tempted by the treats in the trap. The family will look into putting up electric fencing, but McCrea said she’s not sure if it will deter the bear with its thick fur and padded paws.

Our View
Finally, wallet fatigue sets in The first muted alarm bells began going off this week, as reports of “consumer fatigue” began circulating. Apparently, Canadians are not capable, or perhaps simply not willing, to spend the economy back to the stratospheric heights it reached prerecession. Spending growth in the first quarter of the year was the lowest since about 1998. Canada’s economy spent much of the recent decade artificially juiced up. Largely due to the U.S. sub-prime housing boom, and the rise of China, money was flowing in from every direction. Asia needed oil, minerals, and lately lumber. Canada could provide them, prices rose, and whole towns were born to extract tar sands and copper. At the same time, there was this sense of elation – fed by every cablechannel market guru – that the good times were never going to end. So buy! So Canadians bought. They bought houses and condos, they bought furniture and TVs to put in those houses. And then it all crashed back down to earth. Canada was lucky, relatively speaking. Our recession was not quite as brutal, our housing stock not quite as bubbly as in the United States. Our banks did not implode outright. But the three-legged stool our economy was built on – Chinese demand, sub-prime mortgages, and consumer debt – is still wobbly. We’ve propped up one of the missing legs. Now we still have to worry about consumer debt. During those freespending years, Canadian household debt reached new, shocking levels. The average Canadian owes $112,000, from mortgages to credit card bills. Debt is growing at more than six per cent a year, while wages are growing at about 4 to 4.5 per cent per year. In December, the level of Canadian household debt exceeded the American level. Yet, despite these unsustainable numbers, we’ve got commentators worrying that Canadians will stop spending. Canadians will stop spending eventually. They can either stop now, pay off the credit cards, and work on saving, or they can stop later – when they go bankrupt. Frankly, we’d rather they slowed down a bit now. – M.C.

Dredging keeps river down There has been a very large snow pack in the high country this past winter. Will that mean a huge flood situation for the Fraser Valley? Yep, it’s very likely I’d say, and it may make the flood of 1948 seem like pretty small potatoes. The valley is a flood plain. There are two things to make this more and more of a certainty. A rapid warming trend and some good ol’ heavy rain can and it will be very bad news indeed. There is another thing to consider. With all those sand islands that one can see in the river, it strongly suggests the river is not deep enough to handle
anywhere near the vast volume of water that is assuredly coming. There will be no time at all to do any meaningful dike building now. Dredging is the only answer – but it cannot be done for the flood this year of course. The mere suggestion of dredging will cause a lot of wailing. It will be said, it will cause too much damage that will impact on the salmon. It will, too. And a major flood won’t? Those of us who were alive at the time of the flood of 1948 will remember that there was a small pond caused by the flood where nearly a mile away a sturgeon was found flopping around in what was
left of the flood water. Perhaps the same sort of scenario as that will be true for the salmon. Then there is the nearly complete loss of crops in the valley for that year. It did not recover completely for agriculture that year either. Farming is not a way of becoming rich; in fact, many farmers would be driven into bankruptcy. This is already happening in Manitoba – and for the second year at that. In Mission, flood water came up to First Avenue in the flood of 1948. If that same scenario were to happen again this year, the Junction Mall would likely be destroyed.

Editor’s column disrespectful Is Bob Groeneveld aware the election is over? Will someone explain to him that Stephen Harper is the prime minister of Canada, duly elected with a majority government? No, it’s no “real surprise,” the amount of invective and sour grapes there is from the disappointed minorities.

Also, if Mr. Groeneveld wants respect, he should try to show some himself. Calling the leader of Canada “a twofaced, mealy-mouthed jerk,” is disrespectful to the office of the prime minister, as well as to the people who voted for him. The title of his column should be renamed Odd Man Out.

More malls Tax hike insane couldn’t hurt Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
In reaction to the letters about more malls not being the answer, I wish to offer an opposing view. I have worked retail in the past and can tell TIMES’ readers that senior managers and assistant managers do make a good living wage and have life-time careers. Other full-time staff also make a wage well above minimum wage – all with medical, dental, and pension benefits. Senior part-time staff do make above minimum wage and junior part-timers do make the minimum wage of $10. The positive side of new malls is not only the jobs and wages that are brought into town, but the tax benefit to the community – along with the convenience of shopping locally. Looking at the facts of economics. Maple Ridge has a tax ratio of seven per cent commercial and a 93 per cent residential, and this means residential property owners pay the lion’s share of taxes. Chilliwack has a tax ratio of 88 per cent commercial whereby 12 per cent of the 88 per cent is paid by productive farms. This means commercial pays the lion’s share of all taxes payable to the city. Take a look at this productive and progressive city of Chilliwack – we are the same size population 75,000. It shows, commercial and retail development matters to every citizen.
Jim Bulpit, Maple Ridge

Pitt Meadows residents are getting financially shafted with approximately $300 annual increases in property taxes over the past three years, which is nothing less than needless gouging of the local residents of this community. We need to publicly expose the salaries and perks of the overpaid parasites/leeches (City hall employees) to see where our tax money is going and to audit the City to expose their wild spending with transparency and honesty. These tax increases are outrageously crooked and maybe it is time for City hall to come clean. Residents are probably being soaked for the fancy cement privacy wall along Lougheed Highway, near Superstore, and for the pricey and stylish welcome signs with the Pitt Meadows icon on it. City hall employees, like other greedy municipalities and their sleazy unions, are gorging themselves off the “pig trough” of tax money with their cohesive unions and outrageous employee benefits. There is no way a civic employee should make more than $40,000. Pitt Meadows City hall is out of touch with reality and property tax assessments as I am sure there is no “academic, moral, or professional will” in City hall to cut municipal costs that have soared wildly out of control. Shame on these twits in City hall and their lack of civic restraints. I hope someone carries the ball and asks for a legal audit because we are getting raped. Gerard Francois Paradis, Pitt Meadows

Kwantlen and Katzie played an honour song for retiring aboriginal education principal Doug Hoey. Maria Rantanen/TIMES
Plethora of awards distributed …continued from page A1
At the Aboriginal Achievement Awards, Trevor Groening from Garibaldi Secondary received the Spirit Eagle Award, which is given to a student who “has overcome immense adversity in their life to continue with their education.” The award comes with $600 cheque. Lucas Gallagher from Maple Ridge Secondary received the Kwantlen Community Impact Award, worth $300, from the Kwantlen First Nation. The Five Year Award of Excellence goes to students who have received an award of excellence – being on the honour roll all year – for five years running. Brittany Johnni from Maple Ridge Secondary and Garibaldi’s Andrew McComb both received the five-year award. In addition, the aboriginal education department puts out a logo contest, and the winners this year were Rylan Frith from Albion Elementary and Natalie Hamelin from Whonnock Elementary in the elementary school category. Jessica Harnett from Thomas Haney Secondary won in the secondary school category. In the past, the aborig-

But five years ago, when Doug Hoey took over as principal of aboriginal education, he noticed only 40 students and parents attended the awards ceremony. “Our students and families weren’t coming out,” he said. He decided it was time to have a local awards ceremony, and the first year participation at the event was 400. It has grown over the past four years, and this year the attendance was around 600 including Katzie and Kwantlen digni-
taries, school district staff, the aboriginal education department, and about 100 students. Having the awards locally “establishes a stronger sense of... local culture,” Hoey said. At the end of the evening, Hoey, who was master of ceremonies, was asked to hand over the microphone. Because he’s retiring at the end of June, he was blanketed and honoured by the Katzie and Kwantlen, and honoured by the school district staff. Hoey will be replaced by Alan Millar who is currently principal of Maple Ridge Elementary.

Children and youth in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will have a festival to call their own next year, and organizers are hoping a new contest will help with some much needed start-up funds. The Maple Ridge Mountain Festival Society, which is behind projects such as the Spirit Wood Festival, has entered a contest run by The Keg Steakhouse and Bar, and need the public’s help to get more votes. “Rather than move forward this year with another Wood festival and another carving, we thought we would focus on something around children and “…we thought families,” we would focus said Cheryl on something Johnson, vice-presaround children ident of the and families.” Maple Ridge Cheryl Johnson Mountain Festival Society. All the details have not been finalized at this time, but Johnson said they are hoping the festival could go ahead either late May or early June of 2012. She added that Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have the highest proportion of children in Metro Vancouver, but no festivals specifically dedicated to children and youth. “If you go into the library or leisure centre on any given day, it’s no surprise to them because they’re inundated with kids,” said Johnson. The Mountain Festival Society wanted to use the contest as an opportunity to involve not only families, children, and youth, but community groups as well. In honour of 40 years in business, The Keg decided to donate $1 million, 40 $25,000 grants, to communitybased projects or initiatives. The Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Family Festival is the only finalist from this community. “We’re very honoured and thrilled to be considered a finalist,” said Johnson. “Holding any event costs a huge amount of money,” she added. “When you’re putting on a new event there are always start-up costs. The $25,000 really helps to get this off the ground.” To vote for the project, go to www.kegsteakhouse. com and click on ‘vote for a project.’ Then go to ‘view by region’ and scroll down to the ‘Vancouver Outlying’ category. Everyone can vote once a day from now until June 14. Winners are announced June 29.

Fundraisers
Family crusades against cancer Maple Ridge family’s team has raised $100,000 over the years for Relay for Life. Chris Caverly, a special education assistant and a new father with a year-old daughter, was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the stomach, or stomach cancer, at 31 years of age. He was told by his doctor he had approximately six months to live and that the survival rate for stomach cancer patients beyond five years was zero per cent. Caverly was diagnosed in 1997. Today, 14 years later, he is a happy father of two living with his wife Sara, daughter Katy and son Rhys in Maple Ridge. He’s had 80 per cent of his stomach removed with surgery, but he maintains 100 per cent of his enthusiasm for life. “You know you’re in trouble when the doctor phones you and tells you to bring your spouse and they take you into their office instead of their examining room,” Caverly recalled of that day in February 1997. “I remember she was very blunt on the situation. She said ‘You have stomach cancer and there’s nothing much you can do.’ I was shocked; we were both shocked. Sara started crying right away” Caverly said. What followed was an immediate operation, followed by an intense three months of chemotherapy. The Caverlys were told that, should the operation be successful, there would be a 70-per-cent chance that the cancer could
The Caverly family, otherwise known as the Caverly Crusaders, will participate in the Relay for Life this weekend in Coquitlam. return and that the chemotherapy would virtually obliterate any opportunity for them to have children in the future. “I was devastated,” said Sara. “But Chris didn’t dwell on it. He did everything he could to fight. He looked at that 70-per-cent chance the cancer could return and said ‘There’s a 30-per-cent chance that it won’t, so I’ll take it’.” Sara also didn’t sit still while her husband battled his illness. That same year, she got them involved with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life after seeing signs in the neighbourhood. “I felt like it was something we should do,” she said. “We couldn’t just continue with our lives and pretend like nothing happened.” Since then, Caverly’s Crusaders has been a regular team participating in the relay each year and
the team has raised more than $100,000. “I don’t think I could have done it without Sara – she was the rock of the family,” Caverly recalled. “While I was trying to keep myself together, she was busy trying to keep everything else together. She was always there to kick my butt whenever I started to lose focus. She wouldn’t let me falter. I can’t even describe what she means to me for saving my life.” “One of the big things for us is the survivor lap at the relay,” said Sara. “Chris ran it in 1997 and he’s still doing it 14 years later. We always have a good cry during the survivor lap. The whole day is like an emotional rollercoaster.” For the Caverlys, the relay is all about people supporting people and banding together as a team against cancer. In 2000,
despite the odds against them, they were blessed with the birth of their son. For Caverly, his struggle against cancer hasn’t slowed him down. “I made two goals for myself at that time,” he said. “I wanted to reach the age of 40 and I wanted to walk my daughter down the aisle when she gets married.” He has already accomplished one of those goals, having surpassed 40 years of age, and is eagerly waiting to accomplish the second. “I want people to know that cancer isn’t necessarily a death sentence,” he said. “I looked at it as a life sentence. It helped me find out what is important in life. It’s about spending time with your family. It may sound strange, but getting cancer is one of the best things that happened to us. It brought us so much closer and our relationship has never been stronger.” Caverly has some more advice for people who are suffering from the debilitating disease. “I want to encourage people to talk about it. I want people to know that there are survivors out there and if you’re going through it now, you can be a survivor too. You don’t have to go through it alone.” Expect to see Caverly’s Crusaders in their 15th year at the Relay in June and every year for as long as they are able. The Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is celebrating its 20th anniversary. For information on Coquitlam’s Relay For Life, visit www.relaybc. ca/coquitlam.

Running to help those in need
The eighth annual Fund Run benefiting the Meadows Hospital Foundation takes Tam named MVP Ridge place this Sunday, June 5. On Deck
Maple Ridge’s Ultimate disc league was blessed with some sunny weather this past Sunday. Alan Tam was named MVP in what league organizer Dan MacMaster called “a colossal battle” between Strangers With Candy and Huckstables. The Tree Huckers maintained their first-place position with a win over LimeLight 13-1. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

Jinaya Towson had her head shaved to raise more than $400 last Saturday for Locks of Love.
Vixens beat Tankers The Reign Valley Vixens, featuring Maple Ridge’s Annie Autopsy, defeated Edmonton’s Oil City Tanker Girls last Saturday. The win in Abbotsford was made even more special by the fact that the daughter of the Reign Valley Vixen’s #77, Deathtrap Diva aka Vikki Towson, had her head shaved and donated her hair to Locks of Love. Jinaya Towson raised more than $400 for the charity. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”
A strong start The Haney Neptunes Water Polo U16 team beat Metro Vancouver last Sunday 39-9. The 2011 season has just started, and already the local water polo team is showing signs of a successful one ahead. The Haney Neptunes U16 coed team enjoyed a sunny day in the water at Burnaby’s Central Park outdoor pool, and engaged Metro Vancouver teams to end with a final score of 39-9 in four games. In its first match against Vancouver, Giordano Marconato led the charge for the Neptunes. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

Sam Denoni was looking for a way to get healthy and drop some pounds after quitting smoking 12 years ago. She started running, and as an employee of Ridge Meadows Hospital, in the Sterile Processing Department, she decided to take part in the Fund Run to benefit the Hospital Foundation. She missed the first year, but has not missed one since, and this year she even asked for pledges in lieu of birthday gifts. “This year was a milestone birthday,” she said, “and I don’t need anything.” The Fund Run is held every year, and participants can walk or run five kilometres, or run 10-km. This year, the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation has committed to raise more than $800,000 to provide health care equipment, fund new programs in the community that encourage healthy living, and provide education opportunities for the medical staff. For Denoni, who works closely with the medical equipment, she knows how important it is to replace the equipment and the money has to come from somewhere. “You see equipment wearing out or it becomes a dinosaur,” she said. “And you need new stuff. There are always new techniques but you need new equipment.” “Everything cost,” she added. Denoni had some trouble late last year when she broke her foot in December, so she couldn’t start training as soon as she wanted to for the run. She is still determined to take part however and do the best she can. “I’m going to make it,” she laughed, “no record breaking time however.” Hospital employee Carol O’Brien, who works in clinical nurse education, has also been involved in the run right from the beginning, only missing last year’s event. While she has done the 10-km run in the past, she is now more focused on her job of organizing all the volunteers, as this event could not succeed without them. “We need about 40 to 50,” she explained, “but we’ve almost got that much already. We’ve had some people volunteer every year.” O’Brien said she enjoys the event because so many families come out to take part, and local businesses and community groups often organize teams for the event. “Every year we seem to get a few more,” she said. “We got about 300 last year.” She said last year the run raised about $30,000 and the hospital is hoping to better that target this year. “They’re good fundraisers,” she said, “and everybody gets involved.” She also sees the benefit a healthy lifestyle can have on a community, and encourages people to keep running even after the Fund
Sam Denoni, above and inset, sees the Fund Run as a way to raise money and stay healthy. Run is over. “It really does a lot for the community,” she said. Denoni agrees, and as a runner, she also enjoys seeing all the people taking part in the run, and the more the merrier in regards to the money coming to the hospital. “Each person is at least $25 to $30 a head,” she said. Even for those not wanting to take part, any runner can be sponsored, and each donation more than $10 is eligible for a tax receipt. “I want people to just be aware that procedures change and things wear out,” said Denoni. “Just like the toaster wears out at home and has to be replaced,” she added. “That’s what the foundation does, it fixes the old and the broken.” The eighth annual Fund Run takes place this Sunday, June 5, starting at 9 a.m. Both the five kilometre and 10-km event starts and finishes at Fairview Elementary School, located at 12209 206 St. in Maple Ridge. A wedding fit for a Canuck
Maple Ridge resident Sandi Fox and fiance Sam Fisher will tie the knot during game two of the Stanley Cup final. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
www.mrtimes.com
It may not be the ideal wedding location. Surrounded by screaming fans, guys in tight green spandex, beer in plastic cups, and thousands of white towels, Rogers Arena could be the last place anyone would want to say ‘I do.’ But for one Maple Ridge Canucks fan, it couldn’t be more perfect. Sandi Fox and fiance Sam Fisher were one of three winners from a Postmedia competition that asked fans ‘what would you do?’ for a chance to go to a Stanley Cup final game. Neely set to go right back to the beginning
Maple Ridge native Cam Neely is back in his home province as president of rivals Boston Bruins. by Tony Gallagher
Postmedia Network Inc.
There is a reason why Cam Neely is so successful in life. He is one of those special men with a down home, genuine charisma that just invites people around him to work hard with him in whatever he’s doing, and usually whatever he’s doing is something pretty special. Whether it’s heading up his own
foundation for cancer research and treatment in the Boston area or acting as president of the Bruins where he made a name for himself as one of Boston’s legendary sports stars in the company of Bobby Orr, Carl Yastrzemski, Ted Williams or Tom Brady, good things just happen around him. Now coming home where his two sisters Christine Lisowsky and Shauna McDonald still live, as well as a cousin and an aunt, Neely and his Bruins will contest the Vancouver Canucks for the Stanley Cup in what should be a contrasting series very much like the one his team just played against Tampa Bay. Needless to say he’s taken a day or two to
digest what this means to him. “It’s really special for myself and for the organization,” he said having been born in Comox, raised in Maple Ridge and drafted by the Canucks ninth overall in 1983 after an outstanding junior career in Portland. “There’s really so much involved here. Obviously it’s where I started my career and it’s the 40th season of a team I used to follow and played for. And of course I still have family out there and they’re Canuck fans except when they play the Bruins . . .or at least I hope they are. My sisters are there and a cousin and an aunt . . . but our family out there is getting smaller, not bigger.” Neely was alluding to the fact

Cam Neely returned hom to Maple Ridge in February. that both his parents, Michael and Marlene, won’t be around to see this moment in family history. In fact they missed many of the highlights of Neely’s brilliant career, both having passed on from cancer which is one of
the reasons Neely has been so tireless and energetic in raising funds for his foundation to help so many others with the affliction. But whenever you bring up the topic, he can’t wait to thank everyone around him who’s worked so hard on the projects they’ve helped over the years. Whether it’s his brother Scott or anyone else who’s helped him, he can’t say enough about their contribution. Whether it’s his brother Scott or anyone else who’s helped him, he can’t say enough about their contributions, all the while claiming he had little or nothing to do with anything.

The museum will highlight agricultural history in July at the farmers’ market. Maple Ridge Museum director Val Patenaude brought a piece history to the Haney Farmers’ Market on Saturday, highlighting local schools. The history of schools is inconsistent, Patenaude said, because they exist in 10-month chunks, and teachers and staff move on without keeping historical records. But former students still want information about their alma maters. The next History at the Market will be on July 30, and the museum will be showcasing the agricultural history of Maple Ridge, which included huge orchards and nut farms created by historical figures like Samuel Robertson and e

A horde of friends from Maple Ridge came together recently in the Mayan Riviera for vacation, and had their picture taken with a copy of The TIMES. The crew included (top row) Kelly Kolbe, Adam Seward, and Michelle Middleton, (middle) Shane McCoulough, Cyndi Bisiker, Joel Lefebvre, and Justin Gallop, and (bottom row) Kerry McCoulough, Cindi Lu, Jenn Seward, Jake and Sylvia Mol. But for now, accept a few weeks of quietude and recuperation. Meditate, contemplate and plan. Be charitable, spiritual, fulfill your obligations and deal with government agencies. Chase money Sunday/Monday. (Buy technology Sunday.) Paperwork, travel and messaging arise Tuesday to Thursday. Home, garden, kids Thursday onward. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Wishes come true this week and next. You’re still dealing with pressures on career, status and ambition fronts. Here, favour towards you continues until Thursday, but impatience and a critical attitude continue until June 20. Be diplomatic and eager to please, because the 12 months ahead can boost your career and status in the world in a lucky way – you could rise to a peak you’ve never achieved before! This influence can also expand problems – so don’t create any with impatience, illwill or (especially) unethical or illegal speech/action now to June 20. All’s good! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The accent lies on career, ambitions, prestige relationships and your status in the community, world. Generally all is well here, and productive, especially Tuesday and Friday (work or schmooze late!) and June 16/17. But your mind continues to contemplate bigger horizons, religious ones, or foreign climes, or intellectual or love matters. These have turned lucky, and will expand luckily over the twelve months ahead. But short-term (until June 20) continue to avoid legal hassles, especially over sexual situations, debt and investments. You succeed midweek! Chase money Friday.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: These weeks are easy but busy, filled with messages, paperwork, details and trips. Romance, pleasure, beauty and a winning streak visit Sunday to Tuesday morning – but don’t gamble with your income or possessions Monday p.m. Work and health concerns call Tuesday noon to early Thursday – plunge in early; your steady approach could trigger a lucky “wind at your back” influence, a bit of cosmic aid. Relationships start sweetly Thursday p.m., but they turn to confusion or misunderstanding this night, then right themselves (perhaps turning to love!) by Friday p.m. Plan accordingly. Taurus April 20-May 20: The emphasis lies on earnings, possessions, rote learning and sensuality. Your energy and charisma levels are good, your effectiveness high. And a cheerfulness about your monetary position in the world is stealing over you. In the 12 months ahead, you can make some excellent investment or financial decisions, can achieve physical gratification, and a partner’s income could improve, perhaps immensely! Your only “scourge” will be the tendency to put on weight (or to be arrogant due to your success). Be restful Sunday/Monday. Romance, pleasure arrive Tuesday p.m. to Thursday. Gemini May 21-June 20: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness are tops! Someone who is not free to dally might “befriend” you (quite recently, now or soon) – this could turn into a year-long affair, making you desire marriage. But it’s doomed to disappoint, so remain honest, reject triangles. You will also be befriended by someone “unromantically” – or by an agency. You will be welcomed and aided by governments this year ahead. Start important projects this week. Sunday/Monday bring travel, messaging. Land, home succeed Tuesday/Wednesday. Romance “up and down” Thursday-Saturday – chase it Friday p.m.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The emphasis lies on legalities, religion, far travel, culture (rituals) higher education, broadmindedness, compassion and love. Lingering “threads” (vines) of recent research, sexual (perhaps verboten) attractions, investments, finances and debt, deep health concerns, and lifestyle changes still creep around you. Neither cut these off nor deeply commit to them yet. There is a “partner” in there: but perhaps an illicit one. This whole zone has very recently turned lucky, and will expand or present you with providential opportunities over the twelve months ahead. Stay honest! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: The accent lies on depths, mysteries, research, sexual desires, subconscious urges, health diagnosis, dream analysis and occultism, large finances and lifestyle changes. It’s an “all or nothing” time – you either commit, or break off. If hesitating about commitment to someone who’s been around awhile, remember that your true love decade has just begun. A bird in the hand might not be worth two in the bush. Partnerships of all kinds, business and love, meet huge luck in the 12 months ahead – that luck just began last Saturday. Study your future Tuesday p.m. to Thursday a.m. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The emphasis lies on relationships, opportunities and opposition, love and war. Everything’s above board – friends and enemies are open, honest. Relocation might occupy your thoughts – the best, most fortunate time in a quarter-century for this will occur from June 2012 to July 2013 – why rush it? Some “trailing tasks” are a hold-over from May: just complete them. Realize your work and duties will expand greatly over the 12 months ahead – with commensurate rewards. Sunday/Monday are sweet, gentle. Be ambitious midweek. Your hopes, popularity rise Thursday p.m. onward!

604-630-3300 June 5 - 11, 2011 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: This week and next pile work on your shoulders – and health, diet concerns. That’s OK, nothing you can’t handle; all will flow fairly smoothly. (Take care in both areas Monday and Thursday nights.) Your luck is starting to grow in romantic, creative, pleasurable, speculative and child-oriented zones – it will last until summer 2012. You might neither see nor sense this for a long while, then suddenly, an event occurs. Be open, ready – and innocent enough to believe! Sunday/Monday bring secrets and money decisions. Midweek’s gentle, wise. Be ambitious Thursday night onward! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The focus lies on romance, creative ventures, art, beauty, pleasure, vacation, risk and speculation, and child-oriented projects. But these are nothing compared to the huge year-long streak of the same that will arrive by mid-2012 – one that will fulfill a major life-wish! Prepare for that time by building a secure platform psychologically, emotionally and in concrete terms (e.g., buy a house).Your luck in real estate, domesticity, with children, security, retirement, gardening, Mother Nature – will reach a decade high from June 22, 2011 to mid-June , 2012. Don’t start early! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The emphasis lies on your home, security, children, nourishment, on Mother Nature, retirement, endings and beginnings. A minor new phase or project might begin in these areas midweek. Usually this phase (late May to late June) creates a restful, sluggish mood designed to give you a mid-year rejuvenation. But this time a lot of errands, trips, visits, calls and paperwork keep you busy. June 4 starts a year in which your career will involve a lot of running around and communicating. Romance disappoints Friday, flows smoothly Saturday. One met before Friday isn’t compatible. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
