Brain injuries kill
Brain injury is the number one killer and disabler of people under the age of 45. Thousands of people in B.C. are affected by brain injury each year. In a given year, more Canadians will experience brain injury than HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injuries combined. Despite the high incidence rate, brain injury remains for the most part overlooked by the general Canadian population. A team of 26 bike riders trekked from Surrey to Redmond, Wash. to help conquer cancer. by Ronda Payne editorial@mrtimes.com
It was a lemonade stand and the charitable act of his fiveyear-old daughter that prompted Maple Ridge resident Matt Wilcott to participate in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. After a successful 2010 ride on his own, Wilcott and wife, Kyley became captains of the 26-member 2011 team Chain Reaction. Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are home to 12 of the team members, including the Wilcotts. “I’d been cycling for a couple of years,” said Wilcott. “A friend of mine had done it [the Ride to Conquer Cancer] and really, it was the lemonade stand that pushed me over.” Wilcott’s daughter Madison, then just five years old, had a lemonade stand. When Wilcott asked what she wanted to use the money for, he was in awe
Matt and Kyley Wilcott’s daughters run a booming lemonade stand to raise funds for their parents. when Madison answered that she wanted to donate it to Children’s Hospital. “That was before I had even registered for the race, but it got the ball rolling,” Wilcott noted. From then, proceeds from the stand went towards his $2,500 minimum to be a race participant.
“I almost feel guilty using the kids,” he joked. Wilcott registered for the 2011 event after crossing the finish line in 2010. Within two days, Kyley was on board along with brothers, sisters, and friends. Husband and wife team members from Langley joined team Chain Reaction in support of
their daughter who is a brain cancer survivor. Fundraising is at the core of the 240-kilometre ride, which took place from Surrey to Redmond, Wash., June 18 and 19. Wilcott noted that his wife’s aunt, who is a cancer survivor, was a huge help for fundraising. “They [the family] did tons and tons of caramel corn and put team labels on it,” Wilcott commented. “They sold it at craft fairs.” There were also bus charter events to Canucks games, pub nights, a cut-a-thon organized by a hairdresser team member, and of course, the lemonade stand to raise funds. Together, Chain Reaction raised $71,856, contributing to the record $11.1 million raised by the event. Funds raised go towards cancer research projects and equipment. Registration has already begun for the fourth annual Ride to Conquer Cancer, June 16 and 17, 2012. Not surprisingly, Chain Reaction is already set up to take donations at www.conquercancer.ca/goto/chainreaction2012. Visit www.conquercancer.ca for more information.

Pitt residents question mayor on contract Concerns have been raised about the mayor’s business relationship with Pitt Meadows. by Sylver McLaren editorial@mrtimes.com
When reading through the City of Pitt Meadows financial report, Coun. Deb Walters’ eye caught something that made her take note. What she saw was that Mayor Don MacLean’s company, Sharpe’s Agency, is currently insuring the City’s vehicles with a contract valued at $26,730. During the June 14 councilin-committee meeting, Walters broached the issue for clarification and staff confirmed that the request for proposal for insurance services (RFP) met the requirements of a competitive bid process. Helping patients get better Roger Kocheff from Pacific Open Heart Association, left, and Karen Smith from the rehabilitation department at Ridge Meadows Hospital, posed with one of the two new Pulse Oxymeters purchased thanks to a $1,500 donation from Pacific Open Heart Association. The Oxymeter, often used with post cardiac patients, is used to monitor the percentage of oxygen in their blood. With this information, therapists can better determine if a patient can increase their activity without fear of light headedness or shortness of breath.
Property tax deadline
Taxes trump postal strike There is no extention for paying your taxes despite the mail strike. by Sylver McLaren
editorial@mrtimes.com
Property taxes and applications for the Home Owner Grant are due by July 4. There are several ways you can pay your taxes. Both City of Pitt Meadows and District of Maple Ridge will extend hours for those residents who wish to drop off payments in person. Pitt Meadows city hall will stay open until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29. Regular hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Maple Ridge municipal hall will stay open until 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 23
and Thursday, June 30. Regular hours are Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are two drop boxes at Maple Ridge municipal hall at the main door on the west side and one inside the building. To make online payments, add City of Pitt Meadows or District of Maple Ridge as a bill payee and use your roll number, without the decimal, as your account number. Property tax payments can be made at most banks in Canada or credit unions in B.C., and at participating trust companies. The Home Owner Grant is subject to penalty if it is received late. The grant must be applied for every year, regardless of how taxes are paid. If your property taxes are paid by a mortgage company, pre-authorized payments, at the bank, or through online banking, a Home Owner Grant application must still be submitted.
POWER LINE TREE PRUNING AND HAZARDOUS TREE REMOVALS— MAPLE RIDGE When: June 27 to November 30 Time: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Trees are a signiďŹ cant cause of power interruptions. Contact between trees and power lines can also create a severe danger. Over the next few months we will be pruning and removing trees in Maple Ridge from 224th Street to 256th Street and along Dewdney Trunk Road. Trees are pruned using the best arboriculture (tree care) practices. Skilled workers employed by BC Hydro are trained in both electrical safety and tree care. Only correct and proper techniques are used to eliminate any safety hazards.
For 50 years, BC Hydro has been providing clean, reliable electricity to our customers. Today we are planning for the next 50 years by investing in new projects, upgrading existing facilities and working with our customers to conserve energy through Power Smart. snicker. Many people haven’t wrapped their head around the concept of the duck race yet, believing the ducks are live, and not realizing completely how this will aid charity. While traditional ticket selling techniques are going well, it’s hoped this newest marketing method [the YouTube video] could propel sales significantly. Garcia credited producer Andrea Walker, of Walker Park Media, for conceiving of the video - noting she was anxious to try out some new equipment and
showcase her talents. “We wanted a video that our community would love and be proud of and would be able to go back to over and over and have a laugh,” Garcia said, noting it took about four hours to video, and another 10 hours to edit and complete. “It was really all about fun!” Garcia explained. “We wanted to get the word out for the duck race in a way that emulated the event itself – fun, exciting, whimsical, active.” Their hope: The video goes viral, “so we can gain
maximum exposure for the event and for the cause. If no one knows about the event of course, it would be hard to sell tickets. And we want our community to learn about the importance of KidSport and what it will do for our community.” The first $25,000 raised goes to Sport BC, and the funds will be designated to the Maple Ridge Chapter of KidSport, to ensure no local child is left on the sidelines. The rest of the proceeds, up to $75,000, will provide financial support to youth sports and to Rotary youth projects in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Any local youth and sport organizations can still sign up to take part in the adoption (sales) process and will be eligible for grants for their organization. For more on the race, call the race organizing committee at 604-4663333, or email: rotaryduckrace@hotmail.ca. In the meantime, individual tickets for the duck race are also available at The TIMES office, Maple Ridge Chrysler, among other participating businesses. Full list available at www.rotaryduckrace.ca.

Our View
Tory stance is pro-cancer There are some issues that should be above politics. Cancer is one of them, but the newly elected Conservative government has managed to drag even this issue down into the mud and muck of partisanship. Canada’s representatives have singlehandedly blocked a UN treaty – the Rotterdam Convention – from listing chrysotile asbestos as a dangerous chemical. Chrysotile asbestos causes lung cancer, a particularly nasty form of it. It typically affects builders who work with the material. Not in Canada, mind you, but in developing countries. Canada bans the use of the fireproof material in construction. But it does export it to countries like India and the Philippines, where workers have less protection, both legal and physical, from breathing in the noxious particles. Listing asbestos under the Rotterdam Convention would have forced exporters to warn importing countries, who could then turn down the shipments on safety and health grounds. It’s worth noting that Canada is the only country to now block the new rules. Countries like Vietnam and Kyrgyzstan had come around. But now, to protect Canada’s right to export death, our government has stepped in to scuttle the deal. This shouldn’t be a surprise. During the recent election campaign, Prime Minister Stephen Harper publicly stood up for the carcinogenic industry when he stumped for votes in Quebec – which is where the only current, and possible future, Canadian asbestos mines are located. Not every Conservative is so deeply out of touch. Langley MP Mark Warawa recently spoke of doing something about asbestos exports, and we hope he continues to go against the grain and stand up to his party. He can expect support from retired MP and cancer survivor Chuck Strahl, who has also opposed asbestos exports. And of course, the opposition NDP has not been happy with the Tory position. The sad thing is that this is an issue at all. Preventing cancer should be an issue that all can support. – M.C.

Vancouver riot
Let Nathan face consequences Dear Editor,
I will no doubt have the lynch mob that seems hell bent on destroying this family [Young man goes public over riot, June 21, The TIMES] on my tail for speaking my mind, but I am blown away that this kid seems to be, by all reports, the sole rioter, because it would seem for
the past week that is all anyone talks about. Pretty sad world when the father, a well-respected doctor in the community, has to flee his home because his son is receiving death threats. I am not condoning what he did, but he admits he made a bad choice and he stood in front of a camera
Vancouver riot
Apology’s sincerity in doubt Dear Editor,
I was sickened today to receive my TIMES with the picture of Nathan Kotylak plastered all over the front page. Every day and night since the riot, we have been inundated with terrifying photos of the fires, and all the punks smashing things and setting cars on fire. So, he’s sorry? Doesn’t know why he did it? Came forward to own up to what he did? I say baloney. He came forward to save his sorry ass, and hope there will be no consequences. It’s a shame that this daddy is going on TV saying, “This is not my son’s true nature.” I’m wondering if he would be teaching his son a great lesson about consequences, if he were to allow him to receive any and all punishment he deserves, rather than being in denial about what he did. This kid is not just a black eye on Vancouver, he’s a black eye on the world, and the saddest part of all is that it is not his fault – he’s just another spoiled brat, as is obvious when his father protects him on TV.
Susan Mark, Maple Ridge
and spoke to us in front of all his friends, his family, and everyone else who was tuned in to the news, sobbing for his actions. Those were real tears; you could see his pain. He had a bright future and now it would seem he will have to face consequences, big ones. I have to wonder if his apology is being downplayed because, somehow in the minds of most people, he is a privileged rich kid who could not feel shame and has no morals. I think he did the right thing: he took the first step, and I do not think the value of his parents’ home or how much money his parents earn should have any bearing on his actions on that night. This is not a Western movie; we do not hang people for their crimes. He will have dark days ahead trying to fix the actions of that one dark night, so why don’t we let the police and the courts decide on Nathan’s consequences?

HST
No vote best result for everyone Dear Editor,
Residents in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows should expect to receive HST referendum ballots this week or next, pending resumption of Canada Post delivery service. As MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission, I feel a responsibility to share why I hope British Columbians vote to retain the HST by voting “No.” We’re no longer wasting tens of millions of tax payer dollars employing over 300 tax auditors to administer the PST. By reducing the tax from 12 per cent to 10 per cent, people will be paying less, no matter what tax bracket they are in. Lower income individ-
uals and families, as well as seniors, will be most impacted by a return to the PST+GST: they will lose HST low-income credits which come four times a year. If we move back to a 12 per cent PST + GST, we will be returning to an archaic and inefficient tax system that no country has adopted in 35 years. We will be forfeiting tens of thousands of jobs, according to the Independent Panel. We will also be placing B.C. businesses and companies at a competitive disadvantage with other provinces and the world. If the HST is “extinguished,” the Province is on the hook for roughly
HST
Tax carries future danger Dear Editor,
Am I wrong in assuming that voting ‘No’ on the H.S.T. and keeping it will give Ottawa financial power to do as it wishes in giving provinces whatever transfer payments it pleases in the future? No, I am not. I think back, for example, on a part of the Trudeau era when not one Liberal was elected from B.C., Alberta, or Saskatchewan and only two from Manitoba. Given this scenario happening again with a government that is not as reasonable towards the west as the present one, can we in B.C. really consider the HST as being in our favour? Would transfer payments be fair? I think not.
Barry Bentley, Maple Ridge
$3 billion. This includes the $1.6-billion penalty for breaking the contract with the federal government, $85 million per year in interest on the money we would need to borrow to pay the penalty, and about $1.2 billion in reduced provincial revenue over the coming years. To help pay for the lower HST to rebalance the equation between families and business, the corporate income tax is being temporarily increased. Furthermore, the B.C. Liberal Government is still committed to a balanced budget, which is why we are reducing the HST to 10 per cent in two stages. This rate decrease is now federal law pending the referendum results. I joined the BC Liberals and ran to become an MLA in large part because I appreciated their fiscal prudence and economic management. Virtually all independent economists affirm that a HST system is far superior to going back to a GST + PST system. I am firmly convinced that keeping the HST by voting “No” is smart for the economy, smart for jobs, for health care, for families and smart for our future. Marc Dalton, MLA, Maple Ridge - Mission

Gourmet picnic
Food fit for Canada Day How many people are tired of the same old picnic items? Do memories of bland potato salads and boring sandwiches persuade you to buy fast food or, worse yet, keep you locked indoors? Whether it’s a romantic picnic for two or a family outing, easy to prepare gourmet ideas will liven-up your picnic basket for the Canada Day long weekend. One of the simplest things to pack for a romantic picnic for two is a fruit and cheese assortment, as there is virtually no preparation required. A grocery store with a delicatessen counter will be able to provide you with a number of small cheeses and specialty meats. While you are there, pick up an assortment of fruit, like grapes, pears, and local fresh berries, along with some gourmet crackers and pepper jelly. Wash the fruit but leave everything else in its original store packaging. You will want to pack a small cutting board, a couple of sharp knives, and if legally feasible, a bottle of wine. If wine is not an option, then juice in wine glasses will create the same seductive ambiance. Too many family picnic gatherings are bombarded with the usual potato salads and coleslaws. However, no matter what salad you choose, it will require some assembly, so it’s better to expend that energy by making something different. The variations of salads are endless. It’s quick and easy to create one from the ingredients you already have in your fridge and pantry. If you don’t have the confidence to go this far, then blow some dust off the cookbooks you have piling up, and try something you have never made before. Whatever salad you choose to prepare, pita pockets are the perfect item to serve it in. They eliminate the need for paper plates and plastic cutlery, while adding a gourmet aura to your salad eating experience. If carbohydrates are a concern, lettuce

leaves also work great as salad holders. That brings our conversation to the next common picnic item – sandwiches. Instead of peanut butter and jelly or egg salad, why not make Italian pressed sandwiches filled with a variety of Mediterranean meats, cheeses, and complementary flavours? This is not as hard as it sounds, as it is made in a large loaf and then cut into individual sandwiches. To ease the preparation, purchase a large Ciabatta loaf from the bakery counter. Cut it in half length-wise and hollow out the majority of the centre while keeping the shape of the outside crust intact. You should be able to put the top back on and have it look like an untouched loaf. Fill the centre with a variety of sliced meats, like salami and capicolli, along with a complementing cheese like provolone or shavings of parmissiano reggiano. Continue to fill the bread with gourmet olives, sundried tomatoes, capers, fresh basil and oregano, salt, fresh cracked pepper, and some extra-virgin olive oil. Put the top of the bread back on, seal it tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight, with a cutting board and some heavy cans placed on top to press it all together, combining the flavours. Follow one simple rule to make things different and exciting: “don’t settle for ‘ordinary’ when ‘extraordinary’ can be easy.”

Walking through the doors of Edith McDermott Elementary in Pitt Meadows, everyone will be given a First Nations welcome. The first carving project to be completed in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district, a welcoming pole, was unveiled Tuesday at the school and will eventually be placed in the foyer. This is the first of 10 poles being carved in schools across the district. The pole was designed by Quentin Harris, aboriginal cultural worker with school district 42, and he said carving it has been a “journey.” While the First Nations truth and reconcialation process is happening across Canada, Harris said, this welcoming pole project goes beyond that and allows aboriginal children to display their identity at school. The pole symbolizes a

of the school system might see they can learn from First Nations. The idea to have carving projects in the school district was instigated by retiring aboriginal education principal Doug Hoey. It took two years to carve the pole and most of the children in the school were able to take part either during classtime or after school. The 500-kilogram logs were harvested from the Blue Mountain wood lot, cut by Anderson Pacific Mill, and were kiln-dried at the Hammond cedar mill. About 200 community members gave input into the design of the pole, which Harris then synthesized into the design. The pole unveiling took place on National Aboriginal Day and was dedicated to Hoey. Making the pole at the school has been an “amazing cultural experience,” said Grade 7 teacher David Bird, who led some of the carving sessions. He said he’d wake up every Wednesday exicted that it was “pole carving day” at school. “The real question on my mind is what will we do next year,” Bird said.

Walk to fight low-down cancer One local woman will be heading up Margaret’s Mod Squad at the Underwear Affair July 9. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
Margaret Sather calls cancers below the waist “the silent killer.” Seven years ago she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer that has since spread to other areas of her body, and she is undergoing her fourth set of chemotherapy at the moment. “I’ve been in clinical trials,” she said. “I’ve been bald three times.” Despite her body being weakened by chemotherapy, she is determined to walk in the Underwear Affair on July 9 to raise money for research, and hopefully a cure. “I have requested a wheelchair in case I can’t make it because of my chemo,” she said. “If I can’t go at all, I’ll still raise money for cancer.” Sather will walk with friends and family members under the group name ‘Margaret’s Mod Squad’, which they also used for the fundraising walk two years ago. She wishes more people

Margaret Sather in her favourite chair by the window. knew about these devastating cancers and the effect they can have. “It’s because of my cancer and because breast cancer gets so much attention,” she said of her reasons behind participating in the event. “Below the belt cancers don’t get much attention at all. Personally I think breast cancer gets so much attention because it’s young women and mothers,” she added. Sather said she only went to the doctor seven years ago because her stomach ached, but as one of the symptoms is bloating, she was reluctant to see a doctor for a condition women experience
often. However she knows that if she hadn’t gone to the doctor she would be dead now. Luckily she has the support and love of her family, and is hoping she only has to have a few more cancer treatments before she can stop again. “I hate feeling tired,” she said, “not being able to do the things I used to do.”

She spends her days reading or working in her garden if she can, but she is looking forward to raising more money for cancers below the waist and helping others who suffer from similar diseases. “It’s a part of my life,” she said, “a large part.” “For the most part, aside from when I had major surgery, I’ve been holding my own,” she added. “I’ve got an optimistic attitude and I think that’s taken me through quite a bit.” “I’m down sometimes,” she added. “You don’t need cancer for that.” The sixth annual Underwear Affair benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation will take place July 9 to raise awareness and funds for cancers below the waist—such as prostate, ovarian and colorectal—estimated to account for 48% of all cancers diagnosed in B.C. in 2011 according to the foundation. Beach party planned for Caribbean Fest 2011 All ages can groove, eat, and dance as downtown Maple Ridge comes alive on July 9 and 10. by Ronda Payne editorial@mrtimes.com
Let your tropical soul loose, the 11th annual Caribbean Festival takes over 224th Street and Memorial Peace Park in Maple Ridge July 9 and 10. Planned to be better than ever, organizers have booked two performance stages for 18 hours of non-stop talent. Those who aren’t into reggae or calypso music will find their beat Saturday evening when the park becomes a beach party – complete with a Beach Boys tribute band. “We’ll have all the Beach Boys’
tunes you can think of,” said event organizer Deddy Geese. “Their [The Beach Boys] music is liked by all generations.” Other acts include Juno award winners, 3 The Hard Way, Western Canadian Music Award Nominee, Rumba Calzada, and popular Toronto act Steele. Music is only part of the festivities with 60 to 70 street vendors, a kid zone with rides, street entertainers, and authentic Caribbean food. “You name it, we’ve got it,” commented Geese. “There’s so much across the board.” Best of all, attending the event is completely free thanks to sponsors who believe in sharing the Caribbean culture with the community. MRSS helps at Worlds Kolbie Orum will play with Team Canada in the Netherlands in 2012. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Team Canada secured a spot at the Fiba World Basketball championships in 2012 after beating Puerto Rico Friday night in the semifinals. Maple Ridge Secondary student Kolbie Orum was playing basketball on Team Canada at the U16 Fiba Americas in Merida, Mexico. The 10th grader is on the cadette team. To qualify for the Worlds in 2012, Team Canada had to finish in the top three. Team Canada won its first three games against Guatemala, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. The final score in the semifinal was 53-36 – good for the bronze Kolbie was one of 12 Team Canada players. She found out that she had made the team April after travelling to Toronto for final cuts. She left again to Toronto on June 4 again, for team training. Practices were twice a day for a week, and then they headed off to Merida, Mexico, for the U16 Fiba Americas Tourney. There are eight teams competing for the top three spots. The three top teams will compete next summer at the Fiba Worlds held in the Netherlands. Team Canada beat Guatamala in the first round 112-16, and then they took on Puerto Rico and beat them 67 to 53. They then beat Mexico by 42 points. On Friday night, Team Canada played Brazil
and lost 43 to 28. On Saturday night, it was do or die as they faced Puerto Rico to see who would secure the last spot for the Fiba 2012 Worlds. Kolbie has been playing about 28 minutes a game. She averaged eight to 10 points a game and pulled in about eight rebounds a game. The biggest adjustment for Orum has been having to share the point scoring. “The biggest adjustment for me is having to give up my post position,” Orum said. “I’m 6’3” and I’m one of the shortest on my team. I’ve had to play most of the time outside on the wing position, where I have to shoot the ball or pass it inside to our big girls. I’m enjoying the challenge, and even though I’m not putting up huge points, I find I’m contributing with rebounding, defending, and just plain hustle.” Orum leads her high school team with 25 points a game at MRSS and her U17 provincial team with 15 points per game. She is now playing with 11 other elite players from all over Canada, who are just as good. Team Canada is packed with “the best of the best.” Orum returned on Monday, but she won’t have time to rest as she picks right up with her provincial team. Playing for Team Canada is the first stepping stone on her path to playing on Canada’s National Team. At home, Orum led her high school team to a fifth-place finish at the provincial tournament last April. She led the entire tournament, with the most points, and was named a first all-star.
Maple Ridge Secondary student Kolbie Orum was at the U16 Fiba Americas Tournament in Mexico.

Team Baden Cup
In other volleyball news, three Ridge Meadows Volleyball Club team members were named to the Team B.C. Baden Cup program. The Baden Cup is a progressive large-scale training experience for future Team BC athletes. The top athletes from across B.C. come together and train amongst their peers with
some of the best coaches in the province. Mikayla Morcotte has been chosen for the 14U development group. She will train in Kamloops for three days at the end of July. Gabrielle Guerrier and Bailey Soolsma were chosen to attend the 15U camp July 1 to 3 in Kelowna with the hopes of being named to the 15U Western elite team that will train July 9 to 20 in Kamloops, then compete in a tournament with the top teams from the Western provinces and territories. To keep in volleyball shape the girls are doing beach training with the club for the next couple of weeks. For info on the club or beach volleyball email rmvc@shaw.ca.

Mikayla Morcotte, Gabrielle Guerrier and Bailey Soolsma are heading to volleyball camp this July as members of the Team B.C. Baden Cup program.
The 15U Ridge Meadows Volleyball Club played in its last big tournament of the season. With its best finish of the season, it placed sixth of 16 teams from B.C., Alberta, and Western Washington. The girls played hard, and for several matches, were down to just six players. The team had to recruit a player, Dayle Fraser, from Port Moody to ensure it had enough players to compete in the international event. Fraser played like she had been part
of the team from day one. Team captain Bailey Soolsma was so thrilled with the amazing play from her teammates, she pushed through despite being tired and sore. “What a great way to end the season,” said Soolsma. “All girls played great!”

Squirts win big
Minor softball players are off to Kamloops after a first-place finish in Coquitlam.
The Ridge Meadows Minor Softball Association’s Truss Tigers took first place this past weekend at the District 14 Squirt C Championships in Coquitlam, to move on to the provincials held in Kamloops this July. The final game against Port Moody Red Tails had both teams battling back and forth to the end of the sixth inning, resulting in an exciting eight to six win for the Tigers. Stellar pitching from Mackenzie Dermott and Natalie Williams led the way for the Tigers. Catcher Sadie Sugden-Harvery had a strong tournament supporting her pitchers. Helping the Tigers secure their win over a strong Port Moody team was solid play from the entire team. The TIgers are Lizzy Figueirido, Amy Harnett, Chloe Michayluk, Cassandra Reaume, Holly O’Neill, Mia Watson, Cailin McDonald, Elyssa Sampson and Faith Whitelaw.

Team Tipsy helps kids More than 80 teams joined the 24 Hour Relay to fund adventures for children with disabilities. by Ronda Payne editorial@mrtimes.com
It’s all in a day’s work, and while 24 hours may not seem like much, for 11 Maple Ridge children with disabilities, it means a chance at independence and adventure. More than a million dollars was raised at the June 18-19 24 Hour
Relay at Swangard Stadium, including more than $1,300 raised by a Maple Ridge team, Team Tipsy, a group of friends and family. Team Tipsy captains Tasha and Christopher Crawford led the 22person group through a weekend of fun. “It’s a great party, it’s for a fantastic cause,” said Tasha Crawford. “A great way to spend a weekend.” Funds raised allow 11 local campers to attend Easter Seals Camp Squamish with other kids who have similar disabilities. For many, it is a special taste of independence. A variety of camps run all summer long in three B.C. locations.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Your energy, effectiveness, magnetism, and optimism rise for the weeks ahead. You’re on a winning track! That is, if you don’t get knocked off it Sunday/Monday by insisting too strongly on your own way. Be flexible, discern others’ desires. Your popularity rises the rest of this year, and this Monday it could bring you love! Wish, hope, see opportunities, not oppositions. Retreat for a rest and some deep thinking Tuesday/Wednesday – good plans can hatch, and civil servants favour you. Your energy, clout rise Thursday-Saturday: but a domestic or realty problem needs solving. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Take life easy, roll with the punches this week and the next few.Lie low, rest, plan, meditate, deal with shut-ins, fulfill old obligations, be charitable and spiritual, especially Thursday to Saturday. Study career, employment, government and head-office situations Sunday/Monday – think about the changes these areas face now to 2023. Your health faces changes too: a chronic condition disappears. The decade ahead brings digestive concerns, so eat sensibly. Vegetables cure ills. Your hopes rise Tuesday/Wednesday: enjoy a pleasant interval. Saturday night brings “potent glances.” Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Hopes and wishes come true over the weeks ahead. Your optimism grows, your popularity rises. Expect flirtation, light romance, entertainment, social delights! Issue and accept invitations. Wisdom, understanding visit Sunday/Monday. You could see friends struggle, or gravitate toward one another. Be ambitious Tuesday/ Wednesday – you can make headway, all is smooth, especially in money areas related to career. Your hopes and happiness rise Thursday to Saturday, but impediments arise to money, earnings, sensuality and romance – practical impediments. Smile, bide your time.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: The weeks ahead feature property, family, security, gardening, retirement, and the establishment or strengthening of foundations (concrete and emotional/spiritual). You’ll say goodbye to some people or situations, and greet new ones. Snip off wilted vines. Chase money Monday/ Tuesday, but pay attention to major developments: 1) the change in your life and goals causes a change in your home and foundations; 2) this “home change” must face and deal with a change in status or career. Both are long-term, fill the decade ahead – many heartfelt wishes will come true before 2018! Taurus April 20-May 20: Short trips, paperwork, errands, calls, news and casual acquaintances fill the weeks ahead. It’s a busy but not important time. A new project could arise in these areas Thursday onward. Your energy and charisma hit a beautiful peak Sunday/Monday – both days feature a critical development, one which will mold your character going forward. Not in a “war” or conflict way, but in a wisdom way. Chase money Tuesday/Wednesday – but reasonably. Information comes Thursday to Saturday – avoid taking risks in property, legal, and employment zones. Avoid gossip all week; think first. Gemini May 21-June 20: Chase money, seek new clients, buy/sell, and deal with all money matters for the few weeks ahead. Your overall financial, investment, net worth situation is changing – has been changing since 2008, and will continue to do so until 2023. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. Hints of this (and perhaps of tension between your social needs and your money desires) appear Sunday/Monday. Now through August 2012, don’t make the wrong financial decision based on anger, selfishness, over-independence, or a “fed up” feeling. Your energy, charisma surge mid-week – start good things!

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The cosmos nudges you toward career, business, ambition and prestige situations for the next few weeks (especially late this week). Simultaneously, a deeper, perhaps unconscious force pulls you toward domesticity, security, foundations. You could experience this as a try-versus-quit tug-o-war. It’s there strongly Sunday/ Monday. Best approach: make changes to your career (etc.) goals in order to conform to new realities. The year ahead favours major life changes, and these could also touch a lucky wand to your investments and/or intimate life. For success: talk, be curious! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: This is a gentle, sweet time of understanding and wisdom. You might meet a love who could become a life mate – though this is more favoured after July 2, as practical impediments lurk all this week (e.g., that handsome guy is a single father with 10 loud kids.) But in the big picture, you’re finally on true love’s road – though your destination could appear in any one of the fifteen years ahead. The 12 months ahead bring lucky relationships and splendid money opportunities. Love’s choice arises Tuesday. Finances, sexual urges are easy midweek, but might be subtle traps. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Mysteries, secrets, changes and commitments fill the weeks ahead, especially this Thursday-Saturday – though so many practical barriers and traps arise this week that you should wait until next week to act. (Especially to invest, change lifestyle, seek a health diagnosis, undergo surgery, seek sexual intimacy, or make any kind of important commitment or new start.) Sunday/Monday are for chores – practice safety, and eat/dress sensibly. Relationships are smooth and benign Tuesday/Wednesday – still, be wary of committing yourself (and of offered advice). Joy, Saturday late!
Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Relationships are paramount during this irritating week. Be diplomatic. Bosses and VIPs seem un-amused, and practical matters run into soft, subtle but strong impediments. Opportunities will come, but the good ones arrive after July 2, not before. Sunday/Monday are romantic – you could meet someone who finds you mysteriously attractive. This could grow to “deep heights.” Tackle chores Tuesday/Wednesday, but don’t take on so much it will interfere with other activities. You’re meant to find love and pleasure this year: to deny it would be a loss. Go slow Thursday to Saturday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The month ahead holds chores, health and nutrition concerns, and nudges you to attend to kids and pets. It’s a good time to seek employment – after this week. Though Sunday/ Monday might contain stress (Sunday) and a feeling of alienation (Monday) these days also highlight home, recuperation, Gaia, property – all imbued with good/ great fortune over the months ahead. A nice romantic breeze is wafting its way through your life June/July, and you should feel its light touch Tuesday/Wednesday. Handle chores, but avoid romance, machinery purchases, dull people, Thursday-Saturday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The accent lies on romance, pleasure, beauty, creative surges, speculation, risks and self-expression, now through late July (and especially this Thursday-Saturday). This week’s a little dicey, though, filled with practical barriers, so a bit of waiting or hesitation isn’t unwise. Sunday/Monday indelibly link your romantic and social sides, or cause a tug-o-war between the two. A friend might become a lover (or hints thereof) – or you might have to choose between the two. Domestic matters flow smoothly Tuesday/Wednesday, but might not be beneficial long-term. Talk aids career. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
