Business connections drive fundraising
Sunday’s fundraising event is possible thanks to committed Rotarians. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
For the third year running, Bonnie Telep has been going around asking people for money for the Rotary Duck Race – and those who benefit will be local youth groups. In anticipation of this Sunday’s third annual Rotary Duck Race, Telep, who is a
mortgage broker with Tri-Tel, was able to use her connections and reputation as a long-time volunteer in the community to solicit the donations needed to make the race a success – and raise tens of thousands of dollars for youth groups. “How can you say no to such a wonderful event – every cent goes to the kids,” Telep said. “It’s such a wonderful cause – it’s an easy sell.” Telep has done a lot of fundraising over the years – The ACT probably wouldn’t be built without her efforts – so when the duck race was conceived
three years ago, she hopped on board the Rotary initiative, and has been using her connections in the community since to keep it running smoothly. Telep and her husband Ralph have both been in the real estate business for 35 years and they have owned Tri-Tel Realty since 1986. Connections in the community and in business, and having a reputation as a philanthropic person are what help her go out and ask for donations for events like the Rotary Duck Race, Telep explained.
Bonnie Telep has been soliciting donations for the Rotary Duck Race that takes place this Sunday at Maple Ridge Park.

His office is an Edge 540 one-seater, with Red Bull painted across the wings. And his commute this week was from Red Lake, Ont. to Pitt Meadows as he prepared for two performances this week at the Celebration of Light fireworks in Vancouver. Canada’s youngest aerobatic pilot, Pete McLeod, 29, gave a 10-minute show of ups and downs, spins, and free falls on Tuesday. McLeod said sometimes he makes up the moves as he goes, and other times he follows his routine. Either way McLeod makes it look so easy, but he tells a different story. “It’s not a gentle ride up there. It’s a rock ‘em, sock ‘em, kick-your-butt ride in the airplane,” he explained.

rhooper@mrtimes.com
A head-on crash on Lougheed Highway landed one woman in hospital while another lost her licence in what responders say could have been a much more serious – potentially deadly – crash. It’s only thanks to modern technology and the safety innovations in new vehicles that the accident wasn’t much more
serious, said Rob Chatton, Pitt Meadows’ assistant fire chief. The accident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. Monday night, when a woman was spotted driving her Pontiac Grand Am east in the westbound lane of the Lougheed, between Harris and Park roads. Chatton would not speculate how the motorist ended up driving in the wrong direction down the westbound lane, or how long she had been in the wrong lane. But with a large median dividing the east and westbound lanes, there were not many options left for oncoming motorists trying to avoid her, he said.
So she crashed head on into a Ford Focus, causing extensive damage to the vehicles and sending that lone occupant to hospital with an arm injury. A third vehicle, a Mazda3 with a mother and her young son, was also involved in the crash – although to a lesser degree, Chatton said. “Fortunately, there was no extraction required,” he said. “The potential was so great. Thank goodness for safety feature. Thanks to them, at the end of the day, the people walked away from this… Because of those devices, including airbags,
air curtains, and seatbelts, what could have been a more significant event turned out to be not as bad.” Two days before her 55th birthday, the Mission woman driving in the wrong lane was given an immediate roadside prohibition after failing a roadside breathalyzer test for alcohol. She consequently lost her licence for three months, lost her vehicle for 30 days, and faces upwards of $5,000 in towing, storage, and licencing fees, RCMP confirmed. No criminal charges, however, are expected.

Fire risk ‘great’
House and grass fires happened simultaneously, stretching firefighting resources thin. by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com
Two people escaped uninjured, but one suffered smoke inhalation and was hospitalized after a house fire. Firefighters, police, and paramedics were all called to a house fire on Rob Chatton the Katzie First Nation reserve in Pitt assistant fire chief Meadows just before noon on Friday. Fire and ambulance crews arrived first to find plumes of heavy smoke emanating from both floors of the two-storey ground level home, said Pitt Meadows assistant fire chief Rob Chatton. “Crews hit it hard,” he said, knocking down the flames quickly. But the team of 18 firefighters were on scene for several hours ensuring the fire didn’t reignite. Flames caused extensive damage to the main floor of the home, while the upstairs suffered primarily smoke damage, Chatton said. “There’s nothing to indicate it’s suspicious,” he added. At the same time that crews were battling the house fire, another call came in of a “moderate” sized grass fire in the CP Rail intermodal yard in Pitt Meadows. “It’s always a challenge when you get two significant calls at the same time,” Chatton said, noting they called on Maple Ridge firefighters to help with both calls. Like the house fire, flames were quashed quickly in the railway yard, he said. “This was right beside the rail beds,” Chatton explained, speculating that a spark from the train probably ignited the tinder-dry grass. “With these record dry conditions and no significant rainfall, fires are starting very easily,” he said. Firefighters have responded to a series of small grass and bark mulch fires around town lately because people are not recognizing the dangers and taking the precautions needed. “We’re going to remain in high to extreme fire danger until there is significant rain,” he concluded.

Veterans earned permission at war
Dear Editor, Shame! Shame! Veterans not allowed to wear their uniform on special days without individual permission. Shame! These are the veterans you see on Remembrance Day, some walking, some in wheelchairs, proudly wearing the uniform of their country for which they were willing to give their lives – and also wearing them in honour of their comrades whose uniforms were ripped by bullets and whose life blood soaked them red as they died defending democracy. It’s the democracy we are all privileged to enjoy because veterans were willing to wear that uniform to defend it. If denied this right to wear their uniform, how shameful! How could today’s Canada possibly be the Canada they fought for? Politicians must ensure the veterans to whom we all owe so much are allowed to wear their uniforms. B. Schill, via email

Duck Race a ‘good thing’ for kids’ choir Six teens from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will reap the rewards of a local fundraiser. by Sylver McLaren smclaren@mrtimes.com
S
elling Duck Race tickets is a positive thing to do for a group of kids who sing in a choir. The British Columbia Girls Choir “is such a fantastic choir”, according to artistic director Fiona Blackburn. “They are giving back to the whole community. It’s important that the girls know that, when they sing, they can affect change,” Blackburn noted. “I’m so grateful for the Duck Race. And the parents who get the girls organized and spearhead the fundraiser where 100 per cent of the duck sales profits go to the group that sells them.” That is why a group of parents jumped at the idea of fundraising through the two local Rotary clubs. BCGC is just one youth organizations to benefit from this project, which is in its third year. The goal is to race 10,000 ducks with a $10 “adoption fee” for each duck for a total of $100,000. Applications for funding and participation will be considered from

Race day schedule
Quackin’ good time predicted for Sunday
O
rganizers are preparing for the third annual Rotary Duck Race happening this weekend at Maple Ridge Park. Race Day is set for Sunday, Aug. 4, and the day will be filled with a variety of family-oriented activities. Organizers are queuing up crafts, games, clowns, entertainment, even a chance for people to visit with live ducks, as well as a variety of other birds. Food concessions and vendors will also be on hand. The Duck Race festivities run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the highlight of the event – the race itself – beginning at 1 p.m., when everyone is expected to flock to the river’s edge to cheer on their rubber duckie. The person whose ticket number coincides with the first numbered duck across the finish line will win a new Fiat 500 car worth $25,000 donated by Fiat of Maple Ridge and Maple Ridge Chrysler. The Rotary Duck Race raises funds for youth groups in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Tickets are $10 and being sold by recipient youth groups leading up to Sunday. There could also be tickets available to buy at the park on race day.

Fiat up for grabs as duck race grand prize ...continued from page A1 But she’s also involved with the duck race – and myriad other activities – because it’s what Rotarians do, she said. In addition to the satisfaction of helping others, being involved in community initiatives gives one a sense of belonging in the community, Telep added. It’s also a challenge to set a fundraising goal and setting out to achieve it, she added. The duck race was started by the Meadow Ridge Rotary Club, but the Haney Rotary Club, which Telep belongs to, came on board as well to help raise money for youth. In addition to asking for cash donations, Rotarians had to solicit the prizes for the race. In order to command a $10 price on a ticket, the prizes have to be between $30,000 and $40,000, Shantz explained. Boxing
Brother, sister run the gamut in boxing Siblings who box out of Maple Ridge captured gold at the Canadian Golden Gloves. By John Kurucz
Glacier Media
Their level of dominance has reached the point that complacency, rather than their opponents in the ring, could stand to be their only true adversaries. Brother-sister boxing duo Sara and Sasan Haghighat-Joo continued to carve out their legacy
of winning last weekend, as the Coquitlam pair and members of the Maple Ridge Boxing Club both captured gold medals at the Canadian Gold Gloves boxing championships in Cornwall, Ont. Sara, 19, copped gold in each of the three weight classes she fought in — 48, 54 and 57 kilograms — while 17-year-old Sasan captured the 69-kg division with wins over competitors from both Ontario and Quebec. For a pair of fighters who have yet to lose in 2013, last weekend was a case of the same old, same old.
“It’s amazing. Winning tells me that I can be up there with the best in Canada,” said Sara, who also netted a scholarship to UBC at the meet. Sara’s rapid ascent up the ranks — she’s been boxing for just two years — is a far cry from where she was five years ago. She found herself bored and disinterested with the typical team sports offered in high school: volleyball, basketball, track and field and rugby. Left with a desire to still compete, not to mention a need to stay in shape, led her to the
squared circle, an environment her brother was already intimately familiar with. “I liked it at first, but not to the point that I wanted to get in the ring — it wasn’t that appealing,” she recalled. “Finally I gave it a try at practice. From then on, I loved it. I knew this was the sport I wanted to take part in.” Since that time, Sara has put together an 11-2 record. She hasn’t lost since early in her first year in the sport, and according to her coach, infinitely more W’s are likely on their way.

Kwon the latest talent from B.C. to join the Huskies by Brad Ziemer Special to The TIMES
Matt Thurmond, the head coach of the University of Washington men’s golf team, has for many years recruited some of British Columbia’s best young golfers. The list is a long and impressive one, with the likes of James Lepp, Nick Taylor, Darren Wallace, Kevin Spooner, and Charlie Hughes wearing the Huskies’ purple and gold colours.
Now it’s Kevin Kwon’s turn and he can’t wait. Kwon, 18, the 2011 Canadian Junior champion from Maple Ridge, will join the Huskies as a freshman this fall. “I have been waiting to go to Washington for a while because I committed nearly three years ago,” said Kwon. “It’s finally here, I am excited about starting this fall and it’s just going to get better from there.” At the boys Canadian Championship at Timberwolf Golf Course in Sudbury Ont.,
Kwon carded an opening round 8-under 64 to take a threestroke lead heading into the second round. Kwon carded an opening round 8-under 64 to take a three-stroke lead heading into the second round of the 2013 Canadian Junior Boys Championship at Timberwolf Golf Club in Sudbury, Ont. “When you shoot 64 it means everything is really working well for you,” said Kwon.
Kevin Kwon is on his way to play golf in Washington State.
