The HHH 4-H group won best overall entry in the parade, in part due to Molly’s presence playing Manny Malhotra. She was escorted through the parade by her master, 12-year-old Lauren Jenkins, who’s been a member of the 4-H club for three years now. Senior charged in multiple frauds

What’s OnLine

A 64-year-old man is thought to have defrauded more than 40 people – including locals – out of $900,000.

Employee in court A worker at Timberline Ranch is set to appear in court again on June 9, and is facing one count of careless use of a firearm, after the Crown approved the charge following an incident on March 29. Harold Schienke, who lives on Timberline Ranch, confronted two men, with another employee, who had broken into a workshop on the ranch and were in the process of stealing tools. “We regret that the incident happened, but we are thankful for the support that we continue to receive from the community,” said ranch director Craig Douglas. • More online: www.mrtimes.com click on “News”

Pretrial set in Dyer death by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

A pretrial sentence is set for later this month for a woman charged in the deaths of Pitt Meadows residents John De Oliveria and Rebecca Dyer on Oct. 21, 2010. A lawyer for Andelina Kristina Hecimovic, 23, attended an arraignment hearing in Port Coquitlam provincial court last Wednesday, after she was charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death.

The good life isn’t about what you see in the mirror. It’s about what

you see

inside.

Hecimovic will appear in court again June 28 for a pre-trial conference and to fix a date for her trial. Pitt Meadows residents John De Oliveira, 21, and Rebecca Dyer, 19, were heading home from Vancouver when it’s alleged Hecimovic’s eastbound vehicle skidded sideways over the median and directly into oncoming westbound traffic. Her Toyota flipped over, hitting the roof of Oliveira’s car, killing both occupants on impact.

Preying on the sympathies of others by telling them he is sick with cancer and needs help with his medical bills, Douglas Archie Clark has allegedly conned many local people, and his friends, out of their hard-earned money. Ridge Meadows RCMP’s serious crime investigators have been working on this case for about three-and-a-half years, finally arresting Clark in what’s described as a very large fraud investigation. Mounties first received complaints about the Burnaby resident in 2007, and believe he has defrauded his victims to a sum upwards of $900,000 with complaints stemming back to the early 1990s. Clark, 64, is being charged with a total of 13 counts of fraud, including cases that involve him portraying himself as a member of Doug Clark the Canadian Military, Alleged fraud artist often indicating he’s with the Navy, and either being current or retired. Some victims have observed Clark donning a military-type uniform, along with telling people he has cancer, explained RCMP Insp. Dave Fleugel. “We want to warn the general public about Douglas Archie Clark, and his alleged fraudulent activities,” Fleugel said. “It has taken us three and a half years to get to this point, and we are still actively investigating more files, involving 40 or more victims,” he added, noting many of whom were known to Clark. “He has been very convincing in his scams,” alleged Fleugel. “And his victims honestly believe that he is employed, or was employed, with the military. We know this to be false, and will present our case in court.” Clark appeared in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court on Thursday, and was granted a conditional release. He is not allowed to contact any of the alleged victims, he must remain in B.C., and not wear any military uniform until the matter has been dealt with. He is set to appear in court again on July 11. Clark is described as Caucasian, about 5 ft. 11 in. tall, weighing 200 pounds. He has short grey hair and blue eyes, with a fair complexion.

Using an excavator Thursday afternoon, June 2, Stephen Tremblay of T&T Demolition Ltd. began tearing down a home just east of Haney Place Mall.

District clears 14 lots

Work crews were making quick work of several dilapidated old homes just east of Haney Place Mall last week. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

The first three houses on a downtown lot bought by the District of Maple Ridge in January were being knocked down on Thursday afternoon. Stephen Tremblay from T&T Demolition, a local company, was on-site between 226th and 227th Streets with his excavator pulling down the buildings. The District of Maple Ridge bought the

14 lots in January for $3.7 million for future development. While Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said the District isn’t in the development business, council saw this as an opportunity to help in the revitalization of the downtown core. “It’s one way to take a little bit of control of our destiny,” Daykin said. He described the property between Haney Place and Valley Fair malls as a “strategic chunk of dirt” in the District. The properties were bought using existing reserve funds. Thirteen of the properties are zoned residential and one is zoned commercial. The properties fall within the town core incentive program.

Our View

Youthful view defines new Parliament The stereotypical images we have of Canada’s Parliament are of a group composed mostly of men, with the old far outnumbering the young. But the stories in the past week have all been about the young, in a Parliament in which the average age of MPs dropped significantly as a result of last month’s election. The senior-dominated Senate was disrupted briefly by Brigette DePape, a 21-year-old student and page who held up a “Stop Harper” sign in an act of protest that got her fired. Less headline-grabbing but no less important was the election of the new Speaker, Conservative MP Andrew Scheer, at 32 the youngest to hold that position in Canadian history. Then there’s Pierre-Luc Dusseault, the 19-year-old NDP MP who had to give up his summer job at a golf club when he unexpectedly became the youngest person ever elected to Canada’s Parliament. Those three might not have much in common aside from their age. They are, respectively, a protestor, a member of the ruling government, and a member of the opposition. But they are all well under 40 years of age. On some issues, Canadians can be divided by their party affiliation, by their religion, by the region where they grew up, or by their first language. But there are other issues that split us by age. Younger people are likely to have different opinions on the environment and on social issues than their elders. They also see and interact with the world in different ways. Young people, especially those still in their teens and 20s, grew up in an era defined by prosperity and boom times and now find themselves living in a much more uncertain world. They have been defined by wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, not Vietnam or Korea – or the Second World War. How this new cohort will shape Canada will be seen, perhaps for the first time, in this new Parliament. – M.C.

Target, Thrifty’s welcome Do you like all the changes happening at Haney Place Mall? The TIMES

weekly web poll last Tuesday put this question to readers. My response: Yes!

Animal welfare

Pets need protection Dear Editor,

David Chan, maiming and killing his pets, taking them to different vets so he wouldn’t get caught, and they were accidents? Yeah, right! I read that in March 2008 the Coast Meridian Animal Hospital contacted the SPCA after Chan admitted to beating and punching his five-month-old Pekinese pup because it urinated in the house. In July 2009, the SPCA received another complaint after Chan was seen throwing and choking a dog in his car. He’s 60 years old. How many more pets suffered and died at his hands? A lifetime ban isn’t enough to stop him. Huge fines aren’t enough. Make sure he does lots of community service time at the SPCA – maybe one year for every dog that died in his care. We need to do more to protect innocent animals from psychos!

Recognition

Arts mark 40 years Dear Editor,

Thank you for recognizing the award I recently received [Sisson lauded as a champion of the arts, May 24, TIMES]. It is an honour to be recognized for my work as an “outstanding champion for the arts in B.C. schools and communities.” Since coming to work for the arts council here, I have been able to expand our programming for schools and families, and I believe I have also helped various local artists, including past Maple Ridge Artist in Residence Nigel Harvey, to secure funding to pursue their projects. Most recently, through the BC Spirit Festivals initiative, I leveraged funds for the Festival of Light and the Spirit of Wood Festival produced by the Mountain Festival Society. I would like to encourage those who appreciate the work of the arts council to join us in celebrating our 40th anniversary in June by becoming a member and taking part in some activities. I am looking forward to Target coming in 2013. I do hope that Target treats the present staff better than HBC/Zellers did when Kmart in Coquitlam was closed and staff that had full-time status were left to apply for part-time jobs or take severance pay. I also hope that selection of merchandise at the new store is comparable to the United States stores and prices reflect the higher Canadian dollar. The U.S. Target stores have both good prices and good selection. Thrifty Foods coming is also good for Maple Ridge. When Superstore arrived in Pitt Meadows we saw good competition from the Safeway and Save on Foods. We seem to have missed out on a Wal-Mart in Albion so this is a good consolation prize indeed. Parks should be for rich and poor

06071022

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

I disagree with Dr. Walton’s point of view in [(Park) users should pay for parking, May 24, TIMES]. Public parks are owned by both rich and poor. At issue here is the small amount of $1 million in parking metre revenue, one-third of which goes into general revenue. To use for what? Handouts to business buddies? To fix the HST debacle? This system was not making money, due to vandalism and theft of the $900 per piece pay station boxes, and due to public boycott of the parks. Their business buddies pulled up their noses when the Liberals told them to go ahead and exploit the parks to their hearts’ content. Possibly, because the whole park system was – by then - in shambles. Parks, in a democratic society, are owned by us all – rich and poor alike. The easiest way to spread the small burden (environment minister Terry Lake says it is $1 million) is to fund it through taxes. Strictly assigned for maintenance, no general revenue coffers involved. Surprise. The working poor pay taxes too. More – relative to their income – than the rich, who benefit from loopholes and tax breaks. Christy Clark has more common sense than all those old boys in Campbell’s inner circle. She knows the social benefits parks offer, socially, mentally, physically, educationally, and spiritually. For those with family values and not much money, there is so much the parks offer. It can mean the difference of sitting on the couch all day or getting out for exercise. May I close by saying that $5 represents a lot for some. It can mean a truly well-balanced family meal versus a nutritionally deficient one, affecting public health. This park issue is a social issue. I for one, am tired of the Scrooge-like philosophies and the outright highway robbery. Attitudes, so beloved in our lean and mean, increasingly greedy, undemocratic, neo-capitalistic 21st century society. The problem is not the poor. It is the rich of the world and the extremism they so savour.

work with the animal, offering training, conditioning, love, and medical assistance as needed to make the horse as sound as possible before adopting it out to a new long-term loving home. So why did Macmillan select Penny? Looking into the mare’s eyes, Macmillan said she knew immediately Penny was a good horse. So Macmillan recently brought Penny down to the pub, to show patrons just what their kind donations were helping to achieve.

06071011

The fate of an old thoroughbred horse with obvious hard miles – but lots of life and love still to give – was in question until patrons of the new Golden Ears Pub interceded. Now, thanks to a new fund called Pennies for Ponies – designed to collect donations for J&M Acres Horse Rescue – Penny (as she’s been aptly renamed) was saved from slaughter. About four months ago, a patron of the new Pitt Meadows bar built a donations box for J&M, hoping it would become a fixture at the local liquor establishment. It did. Since the bin was erected behind the bar more than $2,000 in loose change has been collected for the non-profit horse rescue facility. And recently, J&M owner and operator Julie Macmillan, also a bar keep at Golden Ears Pub, used the first $300 from that fund to buy Penny. Penny is a 19-year-old thoroughbred mare that stands just over 16 hands high, and given her demeanor and abilities isn’t likely going to stay long at J&M. She’s expected to be adopted quickly. While J&M volunteers have seen at least 500 horses go through the facility in its 16-year history, Penny and another eight-year-old thoroughbred – possibly Penny’s sister or daughter given the markings – were the first bought thanks to the Pennies for Ponies fund. J&M doesn’t typically have to go out looking for homeless horses, most are surrendered. But periodically, Macmillan attends horse auctions

concerned local owners, but said not as many people showed up as she had hoped. “Whoever was there appreciated [the meeting],” she said, “because a lot of people are putting unnecessary restrictions on horse movements because of fear.” She added that part of the reason behind this is B.C. does not have a central reporting body for these matters, whereas Alberta and all the United States do. “There doesn’t seem to be any other cases in Canada apart from Alberta,” she said, but commented that the dis-

ease is widely spread and is not finished yet. The equine herpes virus can spread through inhalation and nasal discharge, along with the sharing of bridles. Jeanneret recommends lots of hand washing especially between touching horses. “That’s what we do,” she said, “we pet horses… and then we go and touch other horses.” She also recommends washing off really dirty boots as often as possible, along with keeping each horse’s equipment separate. “It it not transmitted to people or other species,” she said.

Horse owners in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have nothing to be concerned about, but vet Dr. Stefanie Jeanneret with Golden Ears Equine Services, said it’s important to be aware of the recent outbreak of Neurotropic Equine Herpes Virus-1 (nEHV-1) in the United States and Alberta. “Nothing is happening in our community,” said Jeanneret, “but there was a lot of concern surrounding this disease.” According to a news release on the Equine Canada website, “it is believed the initial cases were in horses attending a cutting horse show in Ogden, Utah, held April 29 to May 8, and that horses exposed to the virus at this competition have played a role in reported cases elsewhere.” Jeanneret held a meeting last Thursday night for

Lawn sprinkling limits kick in

New water-use regulations came into effect on June 1.

Until the heat hit this past weekend, few in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows believed there would be a need to restrict water consumption in the community. And with many hoping the heavy rains of spring are now over, precautions are being implemented by Metro Vancouver. “The demand for water soars during the hottest days of summer, in part because of all the water we’re pouring on lawns for aesthetic reasons,” said Tim Stevenson, Metro Vancouver’s water committee chair. “This is especially true during the evening hours when demand peaks as resi-

dents prepare meals, shower after work, and turn on the dishwasher.” In an effort to eliminate lawn-sprinkling during those periods, Metro Vancouver limits times people are allowed to water their lawns. “Established lawns only need sprinkling for one hour a week, or less if it rains. Why waste our world-class drinking water on grass that will green up again after it rains?” Stevenson said. So, starting June 1, even numbered addresses can sprinkle lawns Monday, Wednesday, or Saturday mornings between 4 and 9 a.m. Odd numbered addresses may sprinkle lawns on Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday mornings, between 4 and 9 a.m.

Fan says ‘I do’ It was an exciting hockey game on Saturday night, not only because the Vancouver Canucks beat the Boston Bruins, but also because Maple Ridge resident Sandi Fox and fiance Sam Fisher were married during the first intermission. “It was just perfect. I couldn’t have asked for more,” the new Mrs. Fisher said. Fox applied online to a contest to win tickets to a playoff game. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

Ridge climbers soar at regionals

The Western Regionals was a stepping stone to the national climbing competition for locals who are also hope to represent Canada in Austria.

The road has been long and tough for a group of climbers from the The Rock Wall in Maple Ridge, but it appears the hard work has paid off. Twelve athletes competed in North Vancouver at the Western Regionals competition, and some now move on to nationals taking place July 1 to 3 at Cliffhanger Coquitlam. “All competitions this year have led to this point,” said Terry Spurrell, owner and head coach at The Rock Wall. “Each competition has put these climbers one step closer to regionals and then, hopefully, nationals,” he said. Any climber age 14 or older, who makes it to nationals then has the chance to represent Canada at the Youth World Climbing Championships, which are held Aug. 13 to 15 in Imst, Austria. “Representing your country at an international level is both an honor and a coveted opportunity,” Spurrell said. However, before any athlete can earn a spot representing Canada, they must first make it through regionals, and for several members of the Maple Ridge team, it was their first time at such a competition. “When the pressure was on, the Rock Wall team displayed amazing passion and agility all

the while showing incredible sportsmanship, cheering on competitors in an effort to inspire that one more move,” said Spurrell. He added that nerves were surprisingly calm amongst his team as the younger competitors took their cue from the more seasoned team members and just let themselves enjoy the atmosphere. “When not climbing, the kids took advantage of the sunshine and enjoyed their teammates and their newly formed friendships with competitors from out of town,” he said. In the girls 11 and under category, Sara Hopkins placed second in the finals, along with Jakob Plamonodon who placed the same in the boys 11 and under category. In the girls 12 to 13-yearold category, Gabrielle Gibson also placed second. “A great victory for these first year climbers,” said Spurrell. “All of the Rock Wall’s Team B youth climbed hard and gave their best,” he added. First year climber, Ben Ross, placed fourth overall in the boys 11 and under category after making it through both qualifying rounds and semifinals

Christy Spurrell (above) placed fifth in the junior girls category at regionals, while Jakob Plamonodon, left, was one of the youngest competitors at the competition. to the finals. However, it seems the drama was saved for the Youth A girls category, as Spurrell said the Rock Wall’s Carly Turner topped her semifinal route with her strongest effort ever, and thought she would automatically qualify for the finals. However, five other girls also topped the semifinal route, and only five can advance, so judges had to count back to
