It was an odd sight to behold when a horse-drawn pumpkin carriage drove through the streets of Albion this weekend. Maple Ridge Secondary graduates Briana Halford, Karolina Fedorow, Amy Hall, and Rheann Smart, arrived in the Cinderella-like coach for their graduation dinner at Planet Ice late Saturday afternoon. Onlookers were in awe as the white iron carriage, was driven by Halford’s uncle, Gerry O’Neil – owner of Stanley Park Horse-drawn Tours. Upon arrival, the girls were met by their fathers. Andrea Halford, Briana Halford’s mother, noted Briana wanted to share the carriage with her friends, “she made it special for them.” The carriage was purchased in Quebec by O’Neil as a gift for his own daughters. With white iron, gold plush seats and even a clear plastic cover, it is an unusual site. A number of unique vehicles dropped graduates off at the celebration, but Halford and her friends were the only ones to arrive by horse power.

Colder spring translates to ‘average’ flood risk Cooler temperatures have resulted in a “slow and steady” snow melt.

The rain may seem endless to British Columbians who are used to warmer weather by this time of the year, but the extra downpours have not raised the flood risk on the Fraser River above “average.” However, the District of Maple Ridge is warning residents that the flow of the Fraser River, Kanaka Creek, and Alouette River is faster at this time of year, and

anyone on the water for either commercial or recreational purposes should be extra careful and use life jackets. The rivers can be challenging even for strong swimmers as the current is fast and there is a lot of debris in the water. The District of Maple Ridge and the City of Pitt Meadows are both monitoring the river levels at this time of the year to watch for any possible flood situations. Ike de Boer, engineering services coordinator with the City of Pitt Meadows, said he is not worried at all by the water levels, but he checks and records the situation daily. The electronic gauge in Mission showed, as of Monday morning, that the
water level in the Fraser River was at 5.61 metres, up by only 30 millimetres from last week. “It’s just about flat,” de Boer said. The snow pack this year was high, but the cooler temperatures haven’t resulted in it melting quickly, which can cause flooding. “The snow melt is slow and steady,” de Boer said. In addition to the Mission gauge, which has been in place since the late 1800s, the District of Maple Ridge checks water along the entire dike system. The District is also watching Wharf Street in Hammond as it is outside the diking area.

Cougar tries pet door Sandra Jones was woken up at 4:45 a.m. on Monday morning when she heard what she thinks is a cougar trying to get in her pet door. Jones’ dog, which usually chases the neighbour’s cat out when it tries to get in, started barking like mad and when Jones went to see what was going on, she saw a cougar in her backyard. Jones lives next door to Maple Ridge Secondary, and she was quite surprised to see one in the urban area. • More online at www.mrtimes.com, click on “News”

Doug Hoey, principal of aboriginal education, was surrounded by aboriginal support workers at a recent Aboriginal Achievement Awards ceremony where he was honoured and blanketed for his five years of service. He will be retiring at the end of this school year.
by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Ten carving projects are taking place in schools across Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and the end result will be 10 handcarved poles that will adorn local schools. The poles are symbolic of the work Doug Hoey has done as principal of aboriginal education for the past five years. “The universal reaction (to carving) is a calming effect – how peaceful, how relaxing,” Hoey said. “Carving can be difficult but what a wonderful way to relieve some stress.” “The poles really represent everthing I’ve tried to do over the last five years.” But carving poles is about more than destressing – it’s about creating a visible presence of First Nations culture in the school district. Hoey will be retiring at the end of June, and for his five years of service to the First Nations students in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district, Hoey was blanketed and honoured at the Aboriginal Achievement Awards ceremonies recently. Currently, there are about 1,050 self-identified aboriginal students in the school district – the number has been climbing steadily in the past five years. Before he retires, the first pole to be finished will be raised at Edith McDermott Elementary. It has taken about two years to carve it, but that was the original intention, Hoey said. Working with aboriginal youth in the school district is slow, steady work, and the results can’t been seen instantly – Hoey likens it to working on a pole carving project. “It’s not a quick turn around,” he said. “Anything that’s worthwhile, takes a while [to do].” In addition to starting several cultural projects – and convincing the school district to hire an aboriginal cultural worker – Hoey was instrumental in making sure the third Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement signed a year ago included a cultural component as a key goal .

District superintendent Jan Unwin said one of Hoey’s biggest achievements has been the signing of the third Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement and the Local Education Agreement, but also the relationships he has built to allow these agreements to come to fruition. “Doug’s ability to work collaboratively with people and to motivate people has led us to excellence in building culture and pride with the aboriginal community,” Unwin said, calling Hoey a “great educator” who has forged new roads with the aboriginal community. “There is an aboriginal culture presence in all of our schools including our board office and he is responsible for that,” Unwin said. Students in the school district have benefited from Hoey’s “forward thinking, his passion for excellence, and his commitment to building a solid team to provide exemplary service to the aboriginal community,” she added. Hoey said he’s tried to live his life by the motto “Go big or go home,” and thinks that over the past five years the Aboriginal Education Department has gone big, and now it is time for him to go home.

Couple settles bridge suit
Originally not offered anything, the Sasiadeks reached an out-of-court settlement over the bridge. by Kelly Sinoski
Postmedia Network, Inc.
A Maple Ridge couple who sued TransLink for compensation after the new Golden Ears Bridge was built over their riverfront home has reached an out-ofcourt settlement with the transportation authority. Shirley and Andy Sasiadek will remain in their home under the deal, but no further details of the settlement were released. The couple sued the South Coast B.C. Transportation Authority and the B.C. Transportation Financing Authority for
the noise, pollution, and invasion of privacy caused by the $800-million bridge, which opened in 2009. They claimed the construction of the bridge and the noise of constant traffic once the bridge opened had “caused considerable degradation of the use, enjoyment and value of their property by virtue of its intrusive physical presence...,” according to a writ filed in 2009. The Sasiadeks were not initially offered anything for their troubles, with TransLink saying the new bridge was built along the neighbouring right-of-way and the Sasiadeks didn’t qualify for compensation. TransLink met with the couple about possible compensation after the bridge was built, but the Sasiadeks decided to seek damages under the Expropriation Act because they wanted to stay in the home where they have lived for 34 years.

Our View
No confusion in referendum The HST referendum is effectively underway right now. Here’s the question: “Are you in favour of extinguishing the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and reinstating the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) in conjunction with the GST (Goods and Services Tax)? (Yes/No).” Actually, it’s a straightforward question. You can vote Yes to “extinguish” (kill, drop, end, remove, dump… replace with your own euphemism, if you wish) the HST. Or you can vote No to “not extinguish” it (keep it). But with all the noise about how difficult it is, some folks may start thinking it really is more difficult than it seems – and they may begin to second-guess their response. The referendum process is easy, too. Elections BC was to begin mailing out ballots on June 13, and most eligible voters in the province are expected to receive them by June 24. Those who don’t get their ballots by then will need to get in touch with Elections BC by July 8. The only tough part: marked ballots need to be back to Elections BC by July 22, whether or not there is a postal strike. The hardest part of it all is trying to understand potential impacts of extinguishing or not extinguishing the HST. Far more difficult than that actual referendum question itself. The government has had nearly a year to explain, and still hasn’t done so sufficiently. The politicians – those we have entrusted to help us through these sorts of things – have been of little help, not to mention their outright dishonesty from the get-go. Premier Christy Clark’s eleventh-hour manipulations to convince taxpayers to vote No have served to make it still more difficult to calculate ramifications. And has Opposition Leader Adrian Dix got a hidden agenda for the PST? Or is that more BC Liberal hype? It’s expected to take weeks to count the referendum ballots – results aren’t expected to be announced before August 11. Here’s hoping the results are as confusing as the question – and not as confusing as the politicians have made it. – B.G.

Harmonized Sales Tax
Congratulations and thank you, Corisa Bell and your fellow activists. You have accomplished what many people have been looking for, namely a good look by the government at the HST and changes in the making that will be of benefit to most people, especially lowerincome families and seniors. This includes a two-staged reduction in the tax rate from 12 to 10 per cent and rebates of $175 per person at the end of this year for many in the aforementioned categories. Admittedly, not everyone will benefit as much because of too high an income, but that is also what most people are asking for. So, all is well and a good reason to vote NO to the upcoming referendum. However, there could be a fly in the ointment – so to speak – and that is if we still let our original anger influence our rational decision making. We must let bygones be bygones, step over it and make an informed decision. Through the ages a multitude of prominent people have spoken out about the devastating consequences of holding a grudge or acting out of anger. To see a long list of such advice, just Google “anger” or “consequences of anger.” It is very sobering. For sure, vote for or against extinguishing the HST when you are convinced of the right choice, but may it be an informed decision. As for half-truths and misinformation, that comes from all sides. Adrian Dix is saying that the public should vote for a “return to the sevenper-cent provincial sales tax” and a little further, that we should return to the PST, but he neglects to add “to the PST and GST.” And when the latest poll suggests the support against the HST is now at 56 per cent, down from the previous 80 per cent, he is quoted as saying that this is not surprising, given the $5 million the government is spending promoting the HST. Here he deliberately ignores the fact that it is very well possible that the voting public is finally becoming far better informed by doing their homework. Walter Verwoerd, Maple Ridge
No sanity in saying ‘yes’ Dear Editor,
I read in The TIMES two anti-government, anti-tax, anti-business, anti-HST letters that seem to feel that the HST is somehow the ultimate evil. If there are any honest anti-HST supporters, please explain the dishonest “extinguish the HST” signs. The voting is to replace the soon to be 10-per-cent HST with a 12-per-cent PST and GST – not extinguish it. It is also yes to paying $1.6 billion back to the feds and increased B.C. taxes to pay for this. It is yes to putting back the costly red tape of setting up a PST tax system that may have to be eight or nine per cent to pay for the extra costs. Taxes are necessary and to say yes to higher taxes in order to send a message is just dumb. I fail to find any sane reason to vote yes.
Dan Banov, Whonnock
Wording is confusing Dear Editor,
The question for the HST referendum is confusing. I am an HST supporter yet have had to wrap my head around voting NO.
I want the HST so I am voting NO to keep it. This to me is double-speak. I am of the opinion that the anti-HST people designed the question. It should be a simple question. Do you want the HST? and vote Yes or No. A Yes would keep the HST, not eliminate it.

Business comes out ahead Dear Editor,
So a mining company is claiming they saved $800,000 since the HST came into law. WOW! Good for them. I haven’t seen a thank you for it, though. We, the ordinary citizens of British Columbia, paid for it. The money we paid for the HST when we bought anything went to pay the HST tax for the large companies. Aren’t we nice to do that? It doesn’t matter that seniors and some families have a hard time paying the increased tax so that the mining company could save on their taxes. I would like to think that the tax I pay goes to make life easier for me. I think businesses should pay their fair share and not intimidate the population to pay it for them as the present ads are doing. A lot of money has been spent on the government and business ads trying to convince people that the HST is good for us. Do not be fooled. Their con game will fail if you vote YES to extinguish the HST.

Tax shift a heavy burden Dear Editor,
Even if we had to pay back the entire $1.6 billion to the feds for the HST bribe, which is highly doubtful, we would still be a lot further ahead than if we had to shoulder the $1.9-billion annual tax shift from big business to individuals. We will pay that amount every year, forever, as opposed to once.
Cheryl Baron, Maple Ridge
Good money after bad Dear Editor,
I am sorry, Christy Clark, but cutting one or two per cent off the HST will do nothing to address the real flaws and injustices in the HST. It will not address the fact that because labour used to be tax exempt under the PST and used to be five per cent, seniors and other individuals who can no longer do those household jobs themselves now pay a whopping 12 per cent. Even 10 per cent is still a hundred per cent increase. It will do absolutely nothing to solve the medical anomaly of paying 12 or 10 per cent on a health therapy, registered massage therapy – which I use to control my fibromyalgia. It would hardly make a dent in the more than $1,700 dollars this tax gouge has cost me in less than a year. The consequence of the HST is that I live on very rapidly diminishing fixed pension. Am I to believe that Wayne Clark’s experience with the HST is just another anomaly? Stop with the throwing good money after bad already.
Wayne Clark, Maple Ridge

Using a pickup truck as a battering ram, thieves went on an early morning crime spree through central Maple Ridge.
Thieves plowed into the front of Great Spaces Furniture, Uptown Health Foods, Cloverdale Paint, End of the Roll, and Hair’s the Place between 1 and 2 a.m. on Thursday morning. RCMP said the loot stolen by the thieves was “minimal,” but their investigation is continuing.

In a relatively short amount of time, Laminate Warehouse has established itself as one of Maple Ridge’s premier flooring destinations. “One of our catch phrases is ‘quality products at warehouse prices,’” said owner Shayne Saunders. “We’re at the lower end of the scale for pricing and the higher end of the scale for quality.” Laminate Warehouse carries a variety of flooring products, some not commonly found in other stores. “We carry Whistler Premium, which has a lifetime warranty against wearing, fading and staining, and a five-year water and moisture warranty, which is unusual,” Saunders said.

In addition to supplying quality products, Saunders said a welcoming environment and knowledge staff keep customers satisfied.

HAZEL is just a little scrap of a cat who settled into the shelter quickly and confidently. She has a fine, silky coat with adorable white pantaloons on her hind legs and white slippers on her fore paws. Hazel is a dainty little cat who would be grateful if someone would take her into their heart and home. She would be a calm but affectionate little best friend to have around the house.
LAUREN was hanging around a property for several months, clearly homeless. He was lonely and he longed for reassurance. It would mean a lot to him to be wanted and protected again. He has a unique black spot on his chin surrounded by snowy white fur from his nose to his ruff, and the tips of both his forepaws are white. Lauren only wants the chance to show someone what a good family member he can be again.

SOFIA had been seen living homeless for several months. When she was released into a communal room, she settled in quickly and became a cheerful, affectionate, lively resident. She’s full of character. She soon showed us that she has a playful streak. Sofia is a bright, pert, sweet little cat who will make a wonderful family member in a new home.

Shots fired from a pickup truck on Saturday have resulted in Ridge Meadows RCMP recommending charges of careless use of firearm against two Maple Ridge men. Just before 11:30 p.m. on Saturday Ridge Meadows RCMP were advised of shots being fired by occupants of a pickup truck, which had just left the Stave Falls area. Members of Ridge Meadows RCMP’s general duties located the pickup truck as it drove up to the intersection of 248th Street and Dewdney Trunk Road. Police arrested the 22-year-old driver and recovered two firearms that were inside the vehicle. A second 20-year-old suspect was arrested as a result of the continuing investigation. “Our officers did an excellent job in locating the suspects, and recovering evidence,” said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. “We do know that alcohol played a part in this event and want to warn the public about the possible serious consequences when there is a combination of alcohol and firearms.” The suspects were released from custody with strict conditions. The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about this crime or others can contact Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251. Or, to remain anonymous, call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-2228477 or leave a tip at www.bccrimestoppers.com.

Snowballing of snow angels
Pitt Meadows Snow Angels volunteers were acknowledged at Pitt Meadows Council on June 7 for their work in the community throughout the winter and snowfall. “Where there are people with a physical limitation we find that dealing with any snowfall is difficult,” said program creator Anne Friendly. The goal of the program was to help neighbours clear their driveways and sidewalks after a snowfall to comply with the City’s removal bylaw deadline of 10 a.m. “We hope that the Snow Angles program will snowball,” said Friendly. From left, Alex Kittle, Kevin Klop, Anne Friendly, Councillor Gwen O’Connell, and John Edington Jr. and his daughter.

CONTEST
Maple Ridge-based jiujitsu fighters grappled their way to gold at a tournament in Richmond on May 29. Carlson Gracie mixed martial arts (MMA) and Marcus Soares Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) have schools in Maple Ridge, Burnaby, and Langley, and on the final Sunday in May, Soares held the fifth annual Carlson Gracie Cup at the Olympic Oval in Richmond. There, BJJ and submission grappling practitioners from around the province competed to see which team would reign supreme. Hundreds of athletes of all ages from different schools tested one another, using various arm locks, leg holds and chokes in an attempt to submit their opponents and make them “tap.” “The goal is to take the opponent down and submit him. The only way to win the fight before the time expires is with submission – no striking involved,” explained Marcus Soares, head coach of Carlson Gracie Team Canada. “The self defence part of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practises defence against strikes. We practise techniques, so you aren’t an easy target to your opponent.” Of the 20 teams that competed at the Olympic Oval, 16 won medals. The Carlson Gracie Team came away with 97 points resulting from 23 medals – 14 of them of the golden variety

expand the Carlson Gracie Team. In 1969, Carlson Gracie formed the Carlson Gracie Team and over the next three decades his athletes dominated the sport, according to Soares. Gracie produced many elite students including Soares, a seventh-degree black belt and the highest active ranking black belt in North America. Soares has instructed and held seminars throughout the world and has now made his home in Surrey. The 54-year-old Soares calls BJJ is the most complete form of self defence. “It is not [a] martial art to attack people, it is to defend yourself,” he said, adding that it is a very cerebral form of martial arts. “I’ve been doing jiujitsu for 41 years and I’m still learning. We have to be humble in this thing, here. Nobody knows everything. It’s a mix of conditioning, ability, techniques, and a lot of thinking, too.” The success at tournaments such as the one held in Richmond is a continuation of the work he did in Brazil, Soares noted. “I came from my team in Brazil, and we dominated the scene in the country,” he said. “When I came to Canada, I promised to my students I would form a very strong team, and today the team has 12 black belts.” ••• Vajda will enter the combat zone again June 17, when he defends his West Coast MMA bantamweight belt at Quest for Glory: The Beginning at the Croatian Cultural Centre. With a 5-0 MMA record, Vajda will take on challenger Ronald Diaz, representing Diaz Combat Sports. The matches begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale through ticketscene.ca.

Obituaries
CORDONI — ARTHUR ANTONIO Sept. 13, 1920 - June 5, 2011
Tony, in his 91st year, eldest of Peter and Josephine, passed away the evening of June 5th. His family saw him through the last couple weeks at his home with assistance of nursing outreach and staff at Ridge Meadows Hospital for his final hours in ER and 2West. The family is very grateful to all who touched him, sharing their care and experience in his final days. Tony lived an active and eventful life moving from Port Arthur, Ontario in 1926 to a farmstead overlooking the Fraser River near Fort Langley. The eldest of 10, life wasn’t easy for him and during the depression years he left home, took jobs where he could, was independent but always very close to his family. He met Doris Jensen, a young farm girl from Saskatchewan and married in 1942. Together they fished the Fraser River, the gulf and up the coast to Rivers Inlet and also tended remote supply posts, one at Quathiaski Cove and another at Egmont. He sold his boat in the early 50’s and joined Doris working as an Aide at Valleyview Hospital from 1955 until retiring in 1977. He enjoyed this work and was active in his union, the BCGEU, once the local President and a lifetime honorary member. He was an avid reader; newspapers, books and periodicals; anything on current and world affairs. Tony was very active politically, too... considered somewhat to the left... supporting peace initiatives, jobs, public health care and education; justice, and more, by his activities and contributions. He and Doris liked camping and taking road trips, visiting family from Modesto, California to Prince George and Saskatoon, to Mexico and Toronto. Tony enjoyed music, brought out his accordion at family dues and occasionally the mouth organ, joining Doris on her guitar. Those were the days. He didn’t miss a day at Baillie House where Doris’s last years were spent until she passed two years ago. His mornings always included a visit to the Haney Place Mall food court where he enjoyed a coffee, crossword and fellowship with some friends who gathered there. Dinner with family and a game or two of crib were a highlight once or twice a week; cherished memories. Tony is survived by his sons, Monte (Mary) and Ricardo (Sharon); five grandchildren, Jason (Deanna) and Lewis; Che, Marcus and Angela, their mother, Leah (Edward) ; four great-grandchildren, Ryan and Rebecca; Halen and Carissa, their mother, Rosie; brothers, Elmer [Bunk], Dante [Dint] (Margaret), Alfie (Vi) and sisters, Doris [Dobie] (Jud) Josephine [Joey]; and nieces and nephews. Tony was predeceased by siblings Alvira, Lydia, Peter and Harold. Celebration of Life will be held at Hammond Community Centre, 20601 Westfield Ave, Maple Ridge, Sunday, June 26th, 1 to 4 pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to a favorite charity or society. Condolences may be sent to www.mapleridgefuneral.ca

How to write a classified ad that works. Writing an effective classified ad is easy when you know how. What follows is a step-by-step guide focusing on the time-tested principles of a successful ad. • Use a keyword. Start your ad with the item for sale, service offered or the job title. • Be descriptive. Give customers a reason to respond. Advertisers have found that the more information you provide, the better the response. • Limit abbreviations. Use only standard abbreviations to avoid confusion and misinterpretations. • Include price. Always include price of the item for sale. • How to respond. Always include a phone number (with area code) and/or street and email address.

TRUTH IN ''EMPLOYMENT'' ADVERTISING Postmedia Community Publishing makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad.
