Nathan Kotylak said there is “no excuse” for his actions last Wednesday night after the Stanley Cup loss to the Boston Bruins. Kotylak was caught on camera as part of the riot and the picture and his name were quickly circulated on the Internet. “My life took a very bad turn on Wednesday night based on choices I made,” he said. “Now I must face the consequences.” Kotylak applied to a youth court judge to allow him to come forward publicly. The Youth Criminal Justice Act doesn’t allow under-aged teens to be identified, explained Bart Findlay, legal counsel for the Kotylak family.

Findlay said Kotylak is struggling to notified police about the threats. figure how he could get caught up in the “The social media has gone insane on riots last Wednesday. this,” Findlay said. “It’s not reflective of his character,” Kotylak apologized to the City of Findlay said. “It’s not reflective of who Vancouver, the police, and to the he is and he himself doesn’t really under- Vancouver Canucks organization. continued on page A6… stand how that happened yet.” Findlay said Kotylak’s decision to come forward publicly is more reflective of his character than his actions on Wednesday evening. Dennis John Allen Warrington will wait an entire year before finding out what his future holds. The 19-year-old Langley man, charged with producing and distributing child pornography, appeared in Port Coquitlam provincial court on June 17. The trial confirmation hearing is set for June 14, 2012, and the trial is set to run Sept. 24 to Oct. 5, 2012. Warrington is charged in connection to an alleged attack on a teenaged girl at a rave held on a Harris Road property in Pitt Meadows last September. The trial will start more than two years after the September 2010 party. Colton Ashton McMorris, an 18-yearold from Maple Ridge, is charged with sexual assault. His trial begins Feb. 27, 2012, and is expected to last three weeks. A third person, who is from Maple Ridge and cannot be named because he is 16 years old, is also charged with producing and distributing child pornography related to the same incident. He is set to appear in court on Sept. 26, 2011, for a trial confirmation hearing. In January, the family of the alleged victim released a statement through the RCMP saying they hoped the charges would prevent their daughter from being bullied further. “There has never been any doubt in our minds that our daughter was sexually assaulted,” the statement said. “This news [regarding the charges laid in January 2011] just reinforces what we already knew. We can only hope justice will be served and people will see that this is not acceptable behaviour in our society.” Also included in the release was a statement from their daughter: “Thank you to everyone [who] has been there to help me through this. But to the people who didn’t support me, who called me names, who spread lies about me… thank you because YOU made me a much stronger person than I ever was before.”

Student volunteers from Maple Ridge Secondary took turns pushing carts up North Avenue after participants took their chances racing down the wet hill during Saturday’s soapbox derby. A variety of tasks kept volunteers busy, from announcing racers’ names to helping at the barbecue and keeping the day running smoothly, despite the weather. Local realtor Bob Johnston built a car for kids who didn’t have one, but it didn’t see the finish line.

“I think she [the racer in Johnston’s car] just panicked and swerved,” said event coordinator Karen Aitken. “She hit the curb and bent the axle, but everyone is okay.” Aitken, a teacher at MRSS, worked together with students to make the event possible. Reactions from participants indicate it was a success, albeit a wet one. “One girl came to me and said, ‘It was worth it,’” noted Aitken. “‘It was wet and cold, but it was worth it.’” When asked if he would do it again, double medal winner, five-year-old Gabriel Shepherd said, “Yep.” Gabriel’s favourite part of the day was “racing” and “waving the checkered flag.” The weather kept attendance numbers lower than expected, but organizers voiced their commitment to creating a familyfocused event. “It was amazing fun,” summarized MRSS Grade 9 student Amy Liu.

Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean said the City is “respecting” its sign bylaws by not allowing anti-HST signs in public areas. Sign bylaws are only enforced in the City if there’s a complaint, MacLean said, and since they’ve received complaints about signs posted to tell people to vote ‘yes’ to extinguish the harmonized sales tax, they were taken off public property. The fact that someone has complained about the anti-HST signs means no HST signs will be permitted on City property, MacLean said, regardless

of the message. “We don’t differentiate between yes and no,” he said. The referendum signs fall under the sign bylaw. Signs can only be placed on private property but they have to be 4.3 metres from the curb, because that area is owned by the City of Pitt Meadows. MacLean said the signs were taken down by the City without consultation with him. The provincial anti-HST group sent 300 signs to each of the 85 ridings in B.C. Local anti-HST organizer Corisa Bell went around Pitt Meadows – and Maple Ridge – with her mother to put the signs up on what she called “public taxpayer property.” “With one person’s complaint, it takes away the entire campaign sign

a council in committee meeting to discuss the sign bylaw. The District of Maple Ridge sought a legal opinion about their sign bylaw, and were told signs are protected under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in the freedom of expression provision. In addition, the Maple Ridge sign bylaw states signs, including political signs, are allowed on public property but later it states a permit is required. Legal counsel advised Maple Ridge council that a provision can’t be added further in the bylaw. Mayor Ernie Daykin said he doesn’t oppose having signs as long as they don’t obstruct sightlines or cause a safety issue. “It’s one of the tenets of Canadian society – freedom of speech,” Daykin said.

Homes to support recovery

Alouette Heights will allow 45 people make the transition to a stable life. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Construction is already well underway, but Friday was a day of celebration for a second-stage housing project in Maple Ridge. For people transitioning out of the spiral of addictions and mental health problems, Alouette Heights on Brown Avenue will provide supportive housing with round-the-clock staffing to help them get on their feet. The building will have 45 units of about 36-square-metre apartments, and a unit for a caretaker. The District of Maple Ridge donated the land valued at $1 million, and the provincial government provided an $8-million grant for construction. The province will also provide annual operating funs of $335,864 to run the building. Alouette Home Start Society will operate Alouette Heights. Ray Williams, who is currently in the Genesis transition program at the Caring Place, spoke at the celebration as a community representative. Williams just passed his two-year sobriety mark. He said he is grateful for the Genesis program giving him his life back without drugs. He added he believes Alouette Heights will help others on their “journey to recovery.” “A lot of my friends will probably come and live here,” Williams said.

The society would like the building to function as a community, said society president Sheila McLaughlin, “so people feel like they matter, someone’s watching, someone cares.” With a staff person on site 24 hours a day, each person will be monitored and given support even though the units are self-contained, McLaughlin said. The building should be completed by May or June of next year, and this fall Alouette Home Start Society will start compiling a list of candidates from Maple Ridge to move in. Residents will be largely from Maple Ridge, but residents from Pitt Meadows will also be accepted, McLaughlin said. Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton said projects like Alouette Heights have long-term economic benefits as a lot of supports are needed for people on the street. Alouette Heights will also give people with addiction problems an opportunity to move forward, Dalton said. He pointed out the provincial government has similar housing projects, several in downtown Vancouver but also elsewhere in B.C. “This is an example in Maple Ridge, but it’s happening all over the province,” Dalton said. Previous policies of getting people into the community and out of institutions “missed the ball,” Dalton said. While he doesn’t want people with addictions warehoused, this program will be more effective. The building is expected to achieve LEED – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – gold certification.

Multiples all the vogue in local housing starts

Maple Ridge enjoyed a surge in new multi-family homes in May, compared to last year. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Housing starts in Maple Ridge have more than doubled in May compared to the same time last year. The big increase was in multiples, or semi-detached, townhouses, and apartment units. When it comes to multiples, there were 46 starts in May 2011, compared to zero in May 2010. Single-detached homes saw a slight dip in starts in May compared to the same month the previous year, dropping to 27 from 31 in May 2010. But overall, there were 73 housing starts in May 2011, compared to 31 in May 2010. How does that fit in the bigger picture? To date this year, Maple Ridge has seen a slight decrease compared to the first five months of last year, falling to 199 housing starts from 204 in 2010. Likewise, in Pitt Meadows, there’s a boom, with a total of 73 starts so far this year, compared to only seven during the same five-month period in 2010. But only one of those new homes counted in May. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reports that May housing starts in the

With nano-particle ionic calcium and magnesium the problems of too much, unused, unabsorbed and wasted calcim and magnesium are eliminated. Just because we ingest a large quantity of minerals into our bodies does not mean it gets absorbed or utilized. It should be remembered that for any minerals to be absorbed into the cell, they must be small enough and in an ionic form to be transported through ion channels located in the cell membrane. Also, and importantly, small electrically charged mineral ions are absorbed through the sublingual and mucous membranes of the mouth, thus bypassing the digestive system.

Our View

Mob violence follows riots Yes, we get it. The nasty people who went on a rampage in Vancouver after the Canucks’ blow-out have embarrassed us and left us all ashamed. But let’s maintain some perspective, shall we? First of all, it’s unlikely that any of the television reporters who seemed so fond of comparing the effects of the rioting crowds to “a war zone” have ever been in a war zone. A lot of damage was done. A number of people were injured. The potential for even greater disaster existed throughout. But it was not a war zone. The senseless violence began and ended in one evening. Unfortunately, however, another form of violence has risen up in the riot’s wake – violence aided and abetted by some of the very technology that is expected to help police bring the Vancouver riot perpetrators to justice. And the results are just as embarrassing and shameful as the shambles made of downtown Vancouver. In our own community, that renewed violence has driven a family – our neighbours – out of their home, in fear of their lives, because one member of the family may have been responsible for some of the riotous violence last Wednesday night. We say “may have” because – his public confession of guilt, shame, and embarrassment notwithstanding – no one has yet gone through due process under the laws of this land. It is ironic that so much vitriol is being spewed against a young man who has shown the strength of character to openly admit that he succumbed to a mob mentality, and is prepared to take responsibility for the inappropriateness of his individual behaviour. It is ironic that he is now falling victim to the same kind of mob mentality that drove his own poor choices on Wednesday. And it is further ironic that those whose photographs are being used to indict rioters – many of whom who are so quick to condemn them without due process of law – might not have had anything to photograph, if they hadn’t been there bolstering the mobs. –B.G.

Hooliganism shameful Dear Editor,

My heart is breaking to see what some idiots are doing to my beautiful beloved Vancouver. Oh, how sad I am... I cannot sleep, I cannot stop crying. I am a forever Canucks fan. There is no excuse for the stupidity and embarrassing, shameful things done to my Vancouver. Please, please, please make it stop.

Taxation

Don’t believe ad Dear Editor,

I would like to respond to the government ad on page A15 of the June 9 edition of The TIMES, “Government listens, makes HST Changes.” First, The government has listened to the angry surge of protest from the people of B.C.. and then are intimidating us with the promise of a reduction of the tax if we keep the HST. After all the promises they have reneged on, why would we believe them. Nothing will happen until 2012 and 2014. Election Time! 2013, Then the reductions will only be promised if they are elected. The premier is correct when she said we will see it as buying votes with our own money. I just read [Voters’ guide loaded with…, June 9 Letters, TIMES] that a CEO in a corporation is stating he had saved $800,000 with HST. Good for him. You and I, the ordinary citizens, families and seniors paid that tax for him. Personally, I will be voting YES to extinguish the HST. I would rather pay taxes for my own benefit – not some corporation’s.

Stan Hutchison, Maple Ridge

Take ‘No’ for an answer Dear Editor,

So Marc Dalton wants us to vote based on the merits of the HST, which he lists as being good for business and the economy. DUH!!! What Liberal government hasn’t been good for business? The Liberal government is all about business, and not the people. Now they dangle the carrot in front of the nose of low-income families and seniors by gallantly offering them (sounds like another political bribe) a rebate. So I’m interested in knowing how much these two groups will be spending per year, if and when the HST is implemented. Get back to us on that one Marc. Why can’t this government just take no for an answer? What’s so hard about listening to the voters in your electoral district? Marc almost got booted off the wagon once before, so I’m sure he is continually looking over his shoulder. So why can’t Marc Dalton step up to the plate and represent his district, instead of once again being a yes man? At least he’s consistent. Roses are red - Violets are blue We’ll tax you to death Before we are through. A new liberal government slogan? Sharon Russell, Maple Ridge

So much for peacekeepers Dear Editor,

I would like to start off by saying that I am a Canucks fan all the way, and I am extremely upset that we didn’t bring home the cup. But at the end of the day, I understand that it is just a game and we will have more chances. What I don’t understand is how the loss of one game, as important as that game may be, could trigger something so terrible in such a beautiful city. When the Olympics came, we took pride in where we live, and we gladly paid more taxes so we could show the world how fantastic it is here in Vancouver. And now, all of a sudden, we lose a shot at a trophy and our entire city turns chaotic. Cars were burned, shops were looted, and people were actually attacked because they favour one hockey team over another. It disgusts me that this is the world that we live in. I work in the customer service industry, and I had a great time razzing the Boston fans who came through my till before the game started. And as soon as I heard about the riots downtown, I was afraid to say anything to anyone who was remotely related to hockey. I spoke to a couple the other evening that was cracking jokes about Bruins fans at a gas station in Vancouver. A man overheard them and smashed their car with a baseball bat. It was a complete war zone, and it was all because we lost a hockey game. There is no shame in coming in second at the worst of times, but Wednesday night we took on an amazing team with an amazing goaltender and we couldn’t measure up. There is nothing wrong with that. The fact that we made it to game seven against a team as good as they are really says a lot... but unfortunately, our lack of enthusiasm and our spiral into madness speaks even louder. I am now ashamed to say that I am from the GVRD. The Canucks may have lost the cup, but we have completely lost our minds. Canucks can make up for it next season, but we will go down in history as a repulsive city with nothing better to do than commit arson and assault in an effort to let the world know that we’re upset. We’re Canadians. Peacekeepers. Let’s start acting like it.

Stop subsidizing drivers Dear Editor,

The regional growth plan argues against “capital-intensive expansion” of the road network. Like the Golden Ears Bridge? Do we want more white elephants sucking up resources in order to encourage more people to drive? What about Port Mann? Ten full lanes of stinking cars for half a dozen years, before peak oil empties it out and leaves the induced growth spurt in the Fraser Valley looking like the U.S. housing crash. We subsidize people to drive their cars, which encourages people to live farther from work and other activities. It allows two-income families to make personal economic decisions based on me paying them to drive. Stop the subsidies to motorists.

A group of Maple Ridge youth received their silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at a ceremony in Burnaby on June 4. Meadowridge School had six students in attendance while the 1st Laity View Scout Group had two of their members present to accept their lapel pin and certificate. Other local recipients were unable to attend. Receipients from Meadowridge School in attendance: Caja Blomley, Janine De Klerk, Marlena Ornowska, Kyle Sholes, Ashwin Singh, and Eric Tsoi, and from the 1st Laity View Scout Group: Russell Pengelly and Jordan Viveiros. To achieve the award, kids aged 14 to 25 complete activities in four sections: volunteer service, adventurous journey, skill, and physical recreation. “It encourages students to utilize their leadership skills for the benefit of others and allows them to take risks while benefitting those in the community,” said Meadowridge School principal Terry Jung. The program is lengthy, taking six months to a year to complete, and students keep track of their accomplishments in a spe-

Roller derby no longer a 1970s sideshow

Liane Bennett, a.k.a. Annie Autopsy, is trying to establish a roller derby league for players ages four and up. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

For potential skaters as young as four entering the sport, this is not the roller derby their grandparents grew up with. In its former incarnation in the 1970s, roller derby resembled pro wrestling on skates, with illegal moves such as punching, biting, hair pulling, tripping and, presumedly, staged clothelines, packaged together with largerthan-life personalities bellowing into a microphone during interviews in the oval track’s infield. Today’s roller derby is a sport, not a sideshow, and Maple Ridge resident Liane Bennett hopes it will be one that’s inclusive for male and female players of all ages. “There’s not too many junior leagues around for the little kids,” said Bennett, currently in the process of forming a new group in Maple Ridge. “If we stop with just the adults, we’re going to find that derby’s going to drop. It’s going to disappear again like it did before. If we can get the younger generation interested and get them playing, then it’ll just keep going on.” Bennett, a landscaper and mother of one son, is a former player-turned referee in the Reign Valley Vixens league. A wonky knee turned out to be the final nail in the coffin for Bennett, who, by driving a hearse outfitted with curtains and a miniature skeleton that

dangles off her rear-view mirror, lives up to her “Annie Autopsy” monicker. A bowling accident in which she twisted her knee and tore ligaments dashed her hopes of playing – for now. But before the post-mortem was complete, “Annie Autopsy” re-invented herself and subsequently resurrected her roller derby avocation by becoming an official. Moving forward, Bennett hopes this new league will get rolling this summer. The Ridge Meadows Roller Derby League is a not-for-profit sports league, with the goal of teaching players from four years old and up the rules and nuances of the sport. The goal of each team is to move its “jammer” through the

opposing team’s pack (blockers) to score points. Defenders are permitted to use their hips and upper arms to prevent the “jammer” from sifting past them. Parents worried their children will be splayed around the arena like downed dominos, clutching broken wrists or ankles, can rest assured that contact is minor, at most. Knee and elbow pads, wrist guards, helmets, and mouth guards are mandatory. “We’re still trying to work through the fine lines, but we just want to basically teach them the rules of the game, how to play it, and just no heavy hitting,” she said with a laugh.

“The kids are basically going to bouts (matches), players must be skating around and playing wear quad skates only. the game like the adults would. She added, “Guys leagues are starting to pick up. There’s one in Langley, they’re called The Murder, and I think they’re the only ones in B.C. right now. I’m hoping to give them a team they can play against and maybe we can build something.” Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m., a few players gather at Maple Ridge Secondary at the lacrosse box for an outdoor practice. When the league starts, Bennett hopes to find a venue somewhere in Maple Ridge. Presently, she is also looking for sponsors. Bennett is slowly on the mend, and hopes to return soon. Run raises awareness Law enforcement officials, aimed at bringing awareness to Special Olympics, were out in force on the streets of Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge on June 9, as part of the 2011 Law Enforcement Torch Run. Maple Ridge was among 20 communities around the province hosting the run, which took place June 7-10. Over the four days, nearly 600 law enforcement personnel hit the streets to show their support for Special Olympics. The runners, pictured making their way down Edge Street, raised awareness and funds for SOBC programs. The local run was organized by Const. Peter MacDonald and Const. Duncan McRae.

The Marc Trudeaucoached Encore womens’ fastpitch team, Maple Ridge’s only bilingual ball team (“Un, deux, trois, encore!” they yell), finished in the money last weekend under a torrid Okanagan sun in the near idyllic setting of the Mission Hills fastpitch complex – cattle grazing, horses, the hills, the cleanliness. Does Kelowna have any homeless people, any poverty, any ghetto? After a slow start in the round robin event on

Saturday, three losses, the girls were determined to make up lost ground in the Sunday playoffs and took it to the Fleetwood Devils for a trip into the ‘B’ final, where they succumbed to the heat, the tiredness, and a team from Vernon to walk away with a couple hundred bucks and some bruised egos. “Well, I am glad that we won the money. We still have to pay for the second set of uniforms. It’s a bloody fashion show… this game,” said coach Trudeau. “We did only win the one game, however, so I would like to see some improvement before the provincials.” • More online at www.mrtimes. com, click on “Sports”

Two local softball teams qualified for the Western World Championships in Sacramento, Calif., this July. The Ridge Meadows Minor Softball Association’s Pride 93 and Pride 98 fastpitch teams played in Monroe, Wash., on June 4 and 5 and came in first in their division qualifying them for the July tournament. After winning gold in their division, the older team, Pride 93, came rushing over to the Pride 98 diamond in time to cheer them on as they hit the winning run at the bottom of the seventh inning to win their division.

MCCUBBIN, Joyce Elizabeth (also known as Joy Murray) Aug. 24, 1941 - June 13, 2011. Joy passed away peacefully on Monday, June 13, 2011 at Ridge Meadows Hospital, surrounded by her son Ronald (Ron) Murray and her friends Clarence Wells and Cathy Rieu. She was 69. Joy is survived by her son, her brother Robert (Bob) McCubbin and her granddaughter Sarah Murray. Joy was born in Toronto, Ontario and moved to Vancouver, British Columbia in 1976. She was proud of her efforts at helping youth in care (particularly First Nations) and loved animals (having had several German Sheppards and African Grey Parrots over the course of her life). “Grandma Joy” had a very special place in her heart for her granddaughter. When she learned that she had cancer, she faced each day with courage, acceptance and wisdom. She will be remembered for her strong will, independence and quick wit (which she kept until the very end). At Joy’s request, no funeral service will be held. Her ashes will be interned at the Maple Ridge Columbaria Garden.
