Car-washers nationally bound The 1997 Rep A PeeWee fastpitch team was out washing cars last weekend to raise money for an upcoming trip to Nationals this year. So far, the girls have a record 14 wins, one loss, and one tie, which has them first in league play. The top four teams in the province will go to the national competition, being held in Vaughn, Ontario, in mid-August. Fifth- and six-place teams will compete in the Westerns, in Winnipeg, at the beginning of August. Provincial finals are being held at Sullivan Park in Surrey, July 15-17. Resident aims to shame johns away Signs have appeared in Haney telling men picking up prostitutes they’re being watched.

Will Dugger wants to rally his Haney neighbourhood to get rid of prostitutes.
Will Dugger wants to clean up his Haney neighbourhood. He had been thinking about putting up signs and coming out to photograph johns picking up prostitutes for a while, but after his 18year-old daughter was followed by a car through the neighbourhood, he got mad. “When that happened to my daughter, that was the end,” Dugger said. On Friday, he brought a ladder to North Avenue between 224th and 225th streets, and he put up about 15 signs telling prostitutes to go away and warning johns he would be out taking pictures of them. “I will be successful – there’s no doubt,” Dugger said. Friday was day one of his campaign, and he hopes to rally other residents in Haney to come on board outing the johns with cameras and videos. Dugger is not too worried about

“Tears were streaming down. One of the men I was hiking with who took me under his wing, he looked at me and asked, ‘Are you okay?’ He was crying, too.” Tears flowed from realizing she reached her goal, and the challenges – physical, mental, and emotional – she had to overcome. “Nothing can stop me now. I don’t care what you put in front of me, I’m going to conquer it,” she said. At that moment, it didn’t occur to Carly she had to descend the same path. Over a six-hour period, Carly and her group made their way back down. They traversed down the final summit on their backsides. “My backpack is still covered in Costa Rican dirt,” she said. “Six-hundred metres of pure [sliding], on my butt down the slopes of the mountain. I had to suck up a little bit of pride but there was no other way.” By the time the group reached the base, humidity had taken its toll. “You felt it,” she said. “I was drenched. You just peeled your clothes off. I couldn’t take off my pants. They were stuck to me.” Kathie joined her daughter on the trip and felt some anxious moments on lower ground while her daughter “conquered the volcano.” Helplessness and fear enveloped Kathie as she waited for her daughter’s return. “I thought it was hard to have to give [Carly] her shots every day and monitor her blood sugars and do the finger pokes, but the morning of the trek, I got up and walked out… and it was like hitting a brick wall,” Kathie said, describing the humid air. “I walked back in and said to Carly, ‘Oh, it’s going to be a hard day for you.’” At 5:30 on the morning of the hike, emotion overcame Kathie as she hugged her daughter. Carly whispered in Kathie’s ear, “Don’t cry, mom.’” “It was hard to say goodbye to her not knowing what she was facing,” Kathie said. “It was like the first day she went to school. I’m putting her care into somebody else and hoping everything goes well. I’m not there. It was a long day. To me, it felt like time literally stood still.” Over three months leading up to the hike, Carly raised $6,200 and change for the Canadian Diabetes Association. She marvelled at the generosity of friends, family, and co-workers who dug deep into their pockets to support her. During her fundraising blitz, Carly doesn’t recall receiving a donation under $35.
It wasn’t yet 7 a.m., and the temperature in Rincon de la Vieja, Costa Rica, already hovered around 36º Celsius. Would-be hikers drowned in choking 90 per cent humidity. For one of them, who grew up in Pitt Meadows, panic set in. During training hikes on B.C.’s West Coast, Carly Ward never experienced such conditions. The soupy air felt like, she said, “someone had put a two-ton pack on you and said, ‘Now walk.’” Her muscles pulled for oxygen; sweat soaked her skin. “It’s only eight kilometres and I’ve been hiking 10, 15, so I’m thinking, pshaw, slam dunk!,” Carly recalled with a dismissive wave. “Then I get off the bus and it’s another story. You know what? I didn’t sign up to kill myself. I wasn’t the only person thinking we shouldn’t be doing this.” Troy Landreville/TIMES Adding to the challenge: Carly is a Type 1 Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school trustee Kathie Ward diabetic, and has been since first being diagaccompanied her daughter Carly to Costa Rica, where nosed at two years old. Money alone won’t guarantee a good education, according to the minister of education. George Abbott, the recently appointed minister of education was visiting Maple Ridge on Friday and toured Thomas Haney Secondary and Kanaka Creek Elementary schools, both of which have nontraditional learning models and schedules. As the school district struggles to balance its budget – which is scheduled to pass today (Tuesday) at the last board meeting of the year – the education minister said innovation doesn’t depend on money but on good leadership. “Money alone can’t buy you an excellent education system,” Abbott said. The economic recession has had an impact on education budgets, Abbott

Education Minister George Abbott toured Kanaka Creek Elementary on Friday afternoon with MLA Marc Dalton and superintendent Jan Unwin. said, and there isn’t the “flexibility” in funding that existed back in 2006. In addition, the drop in enrolment has presented challenges for school districts. The education budget has grown year over year, Abbott said, but he conceded that cost pressures have also grown over time. School board chair Ken Clarkson toured the schools with the minister after the board of education had met with him to discuss education issues.
The minister seems to understand that building relationships in education is of utmost importance, Clarkson said, and he indicated that he wanted to build stronger ties with the BCTF and parent groups. The board of education pointed out to the minister that it’s hard to do longterm planning with the funding model that currently exists. Abbott also visited Meadowridge School, a private school in Maple Ridge, on Friday.

Letter carriers are scheduled to be back at work today (Tuesday) after an almost two-week lockout. Back-to-work legislation that passed in the Senate on Sunday means about 50 local carriers will be back on the job, but their local president said they’re not happy to be legislated back to work. Cindy McDonnell, who is president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, local 740 and a resident of Maple Ridge, joined other postal workers at a rally in downtown Vancouver on Monday to show their displeasure at being legislated back to work. McDonnell said when letter carriers go back to work today, they won’t be happy to work under imposed conditions. It will be back to work, but not business as usual, McDonnell said. “There won’t be any labour peace as a result,” she said. Being legislated back to work means they won’t be able to negotiate their contract, she added. “I hope Harper remembers in four years postal workers aren’t happy [with the legislation],” McDonnell said. The union and Canada Post will submit proposals for a contract and an arbitrator will decide which one will be their contract. Until the new contract is signed, the old contract will be followed. After the back-to-work bill was introduced in the House of Commons last

Postal workers, including about 50 locally, were locked out two weeks ago. week, the NDP vowed to draw out the debate for as long as possible, giving managers and unionized workers an opportunity to come to their own settlement. But by Saturday afternoon, as the marathon debate in the House continued, union representatives said no agreement was going to be reached. With that, the union asked the NDP to stop filibustering and present amendments to the bill. The NDP proposed a pay-rate increase higher than outlined in the bill. But the Conservative majority defeated it, along with other amendments.

People who attended the Haney Farmers’ Market got a treat on Saturday for National Aboriginal Day. The mayor of Maple Ridge, Ernie Daykin, several council members, and Pitt Meadows council woman Gwen O’Connell were on hand to celebrate the event with a traditional prayer, songs and dancing.
Ridge Meadows RCMP are warning people about donating money or any other items of value to what appears to be an invalid charity. A resident of Maple Ridge received a phone call from a person who claimed to be representing “Kids’ Camp Children’s Fun Day” organization, requesting a donation. The resident agreed to donate, and it was arranged that the donation would be picked up at the home. A woman on a bicycle showed up to pick up the donation. When the resident offered to donate with a personal cheque, the woman stated that the charity preferred cash. The resident did not donate, but did report this to police. As a result, Mounties investigated the incident and discovered that the purported charity is not registered with the Business Service of B.C. as a current charitable organization. The woman who went to collect the donation is described as Caucasian, in her late 40s, scruffy appearance, slim build, and sandycoloured brown hair that was pulled back. The woman smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. As with any organization that is seeking donations, police urge people to ensure they’re comfortable with donating to that charity, and

88-year-old hit by truck An 88-year-old woman was badly injured when she was struck by a pickup truck as she crossed 224th Street in Maple Ridge. The incident occurred at about 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23. The victim suffered what is believed to be a number of non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the pickup was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Arrest for assault
RCMP have arrested a 38-year-old Maple Ridge man on allegations of assaulting his wife and possession of controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking. Police were called by the suspect’s wife on Friday, June 24, alleging the suspect had assaulted her in their home. The suspect had left the residence before police arrived, but they later found him after he’d returned home. In the course of the investigation, it
was learned the suspect had a firearm that police needed to seize. The suspect helped police in finding the firearm, which was in a vehicle on the suspect’s property. The police also located 30 pounds of marijuana and a quarter of a pound of cocaine. All of the illegal items were seized, and will be prepared for a court case. The suspect was remanded by a justice till Monday, June 27.
Pitt Meadows break-in
Ridge Meadows RCMP are investigating a break-in to a Pitt Meadows home. Our View
Don’t stamp out strikers No one likes a postal strike. Sure, fewer fliers pile up in your mail box. But for those who don’t pay their bills online, or who are waiting for a cheque to arrive, it’s no fun at all. Many small businesses have had to switch to private couriers, or forego deliveries for the past week. Provincial governments have scrambled to get aid money out. It’s been inconvenient. Well, it was supposed to be. Inconvenience is the essence of a strike. It’s supposed to hurt the employer’s pocketbook. Except in this case, the employer happens to be the federal government. Apparently, the new Conservative government wasn’t in the mood to give an inch. They bashed the union relentlessly – even though it was Canada Post that locked out its employees. The full work stoppage only began once that happened. The union itself staged only rotating strikes, and was still delivering mail, albeit slower than usual. But the Tories saved their worst attacks on the union for the small print of their back-to-work bill. Issues will be decided by “final offer arbitration,” in which the arbitrator will have to pick either the union position or the employer’s. No in between, no Solomonic wisdom needed here. Then there’s the salary included in the legislation. Canada Post workers will get pay raises – but less than the most recent offer from the corporation itself. This is staggeringly mean-spirited. It seems that a government looking to trim the budget by any means necessary decided to punish postal workers for exercising their right to strike. So this sets a nasty precedent for the next four years. If you work in an industry the government would rather not see shut down – anything that bugs enough voters, essentially – you’d better hope you don’t need to strike. You won’t get a good deal. – M.C.

Bear’s shooting disturbing
Dear Editor, On June 15 I made the unfortunate decision to spend my morning enjoying the fresh air and the sounds of the river and have a nice stretch at the Maple Ridge Park. Unfortunately, I was greeted by two and soon three RCMP holding their high-powered rifles aimed into the tree tops. They had treed a bear that had become nothing more than a “nuisance”. I witnessed the terrified bear clinging to the slim branches near the tree tops and knew it only had minutes to live. Sickened by it all, my normal leisurely walk through the park was a very quick stop of disgust. Your article [Injured black bear killed, June 16, The TIMES] claims the bear was injured and 40 complaints were received about it. The Maple Ridge Park is surrounded by wilderness and a fish bearing river... yes, bears frequent this area. Sadly for this bear, it was not welcome in its own home. Moving a bear or even assessing the injuries to the bear would cost money; the cost of killing it is pennies. What had this bear done to deserve such a fate, other than having citizens report its presence? Murderers, rapists, and others walk among us, and when captured, receive food, water, housing, education, etc. This killing must stop, or perhaps we should start killing criminals who commit horrible crimes and are safe and secure
in solitary confinement to ensure no one harms them. Clifford Olson jumps to my mind; his housing costs are over $3 million and climbing. Since 1990, in 21 years, North America had 26 human deaths due to encounters with black bears. Yet two people die every hour in North America from drunk drivers. Perhaps in the few minutes it has taken me to write this letter, someone has been killed by a drunk driver. Speeding drivers kill 200 people every year in B.C. alone; imagine the statistics for North America. I am sickened at the ease with which our wonderful black bears continue to be butchered in our city. I have lived in Maple Ridge for seven years, and time and time again I have witnessed bears being killed with such senseless abandon. I moved to Maple Ridge to enjoy the wildlife, and as a hiker constantly encounter bears. I even once startled a mother bear with her two cubs; she made no aggressive gesture towards me. I have no doubt she and her cubs have been shot for their actions: living in our spreading community as hers continues to shrink. It seems conservation no longer reflects the definition of the word: the prevention of injury, decay, waste, or loss; the careful use/management of a natural resource to prevent its depletion. Why have things gone so terribly wrong? M. Priest, Maple Ridge
HST referendum
Much more being taxed today
Dear Editor,
You think keeping the HST is good? With two or more kids, it’s not hard to spend $1,000 for school supplies, clothes, and shoes (for kids under 16 in adult
sizes). Consider what you used to pay in tax, what you currently pay in tax, and what you might get to pay in tax in three years. Old system: PST seven per cent and GST five per cent; spend $1,000, pay
HST referendum
Pro-HST ads are misleading Dear Editor,
The latest lies are ones we are paying for with tax money: the ones that tell us that the HST is only 10 per cent, and the PST plus GST are 12 per cent. Do they really think we’re that stupid? The HST is currently, and will be until 2013, 12 per cent – and that is on many items not previously taxed. It will only drop one per cent in 2013, and one per cent in 2014. Also let’s not forget the revenue generated by this nasty tax for the time we have already had it! How many millions will the BC Liberals accumulate with taxes already charged? Add to that the money collected on the extra items taxed under this HST system. And the claim “revenue neutral”? Another liberal lie.

Vancouver riot
Picture worth 1,000 words
Dear Editor, I enjoyed your article [Young man goes public over riot, June 20, TIMES] but I don’t believe Nathan should receive kudos for turning himself in, since it was likely his lawyer who came up with that bright idea. People who truly are of a higher moral character don’t take part in destructive riots or try to light a police car on fire. He is acting as if he had a momentary lapse of good judgment. I don’t buy it. Here is a spoiled brat who is being yet again enabled by his doting parents. You only have to look at how his mother is protectively touching her son’s shoulders while the father looks adoringly on. What is even more clear in this photo is the look of defiance and anger on the boy’s face. The picture is truly worth a thousand words. I hope this kid gets exactly what is coming to him Lisa Losorelli, Burnaby

In the meantime, George Washington was wearing a Boston Bruins’ jersey on the statue behind Maple Ridge’s own Penny Morgan a few weeks back, while visiting her cousin in Boston. Proudly sporting her Canucks jersey, she carried around a copy of her hometown newspaper, The TIMES, during the playoffs.

It’s very quiet down on the dock on a sunny June afternoon. The river is flowing lazily by, while two athletes suit up and prepare to launch their kayak on the water for a training session. Both have spinal cord injuries, but that is not going to stop them from participating in a sport they love. James Telep and Kevin Priebe are members of the Pitt Meadows Paddling Club Paddle-ALL program, which has been running for three years. “It’s a program that is both offered recreationally and competitively for persons with disabilities,” said program coordinator Emma Visser. “We started with just a recreational program,” she added, “but last year we got great interest in four competitions.” The club sent three athletes to nationals last year, which Visser said was the highest representation of any club with adaptive sports in Canada. Visser started the program, and has been trying to grow member-

ship and interest ever since. A few weeks ago, the club won an Inclusion and Accessibility Award from the City of Pitt Meadows for their work with people with disabilities. “I was at a point where I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do,” Visser said about starting the program. “It was such a new field for me. I knew I wanted to work outside and work with people with disabilities,” she said. Pitt Meadows Paddling Club is supportive of the adaptive sports, added Visser, and embraced her idea even though she had never been a strong canoer or kayaker. “I was stubborn in my soccer ways,” she laughed. But after some help and a push from her best friend’s mom, MaryJane Abbott, the executive director of CanoeKayakBC, Visser decided to go for it and make up flyers and spread the word. She is now so glad she did, as the program has continued to grow every year, and now she is looking for new recruits to expand both the recreational and competitive components, but especially the competitive team. “In three years we built a dock, and a clubhouse, and much more,” she said, and they have all the necessary equipment to make athletes of all ages and abilities feel comfortable both on the dock and in the water. The competitive Paddle-ALL program currently has six members, with two more who have expressed interest, and the recreational group is run on a month-to-month basis, and as a drop-in program. “We do that because we want as many people to come out and just enjoy it,” she said. Visser is used to dealing with athletes who may be scared about going on the dock for the first time, and said the club has staff and volunteers who are ready to help in any way they can. “We’ve had a lot of fear factor,” she said. “When [the athletes] get there the first day, just being open and asking questions,” she said helps ease any fears.

Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711, Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
