Busker takes on city noise bylaws

Crooner vows charter challenge, saying fines violate rights

Brent Richter brichter@nsnews.com

A North Vancouver street musician is challenging the city’s efforts to pull the plug on her act, saying the municipality’s noise bylaw is a violation of her rights. Megan Regehr, better known on the North Shore and around North America under her stage name Babe Coal, has received three $100-fines from bylaw enforcement officers in recent weeks because she uses a microphone and amp when she performs her jazz-soul tunes in the Civic Plaza. Regehr and her manager Mitch Barnes contend the bylaw amounts to an infringement on her fundamental freedom of expression, guaranteed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. “I see . . . my microphone and my amplifier (as) part of my expression. That’s my art form,” said Regehr. “(Without them), I couldn’t be heard. I whisper when I sing. I’m a crooner. . . . I wouldn’t be heard above the vehicles on the street.” Regehr compared it to giving an artist the right to paint but then outlawing canvas, brushes and colours. Barnes put it more bluntly. “Our basic argument is simple: No government in Canada, while the Charter of Rights exists, has the ability to interfere with freedom of expression,” he said. Regehr remains defiant and insists she will keep playing and singing plugged in until she has her fines dropped and the bylaw is struck down. She and Barnes plan to represent themselves when they appeal the fines in Supreme Court as soon as her case can be heard. While the charter is clear that everyone has the right to expression, Barnes concedes that it makes no mention of mics or amps. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t part of Regehr’s expression, he argues. “The charter was left ambiguous for a reason; it wasn’t meant to be undermined,” he said. “It was meant to be imposing.” See City page 9

Auditor General questions Hwy. 99 safety monitoring

Jane Seyd jseyd@nsnews.com

B.C.’S Auditor General is raising questions about why the province is paying the company behind the Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement Project for meeting incentives that the Ministry of Transportation and Highways has not been actively monitoring. B.C.’s Auditor General John Doyle raised the issue in a report released last month that examined whether the highway project — built through a public-private partnership — had achieved its goals and provided good value for money. “P3 contracts are often complex and long-term: They require effective governance and contract management to ensure government achieves value for money,” wrote Doyle in the report. ELAINE Graham remains the only resident among the historical buildings at Point Atkinson Lighthouse station. She still lives in the home she shared with her husband, one of the last keepers of the lighthouse before it was automated in 1996. Structures at the station, including this army blockhouse circa 1940, are in need of repair.

AT THE POINT ATKINSON LIGHTHOUSE, HISTORY LIVES ON WITH ITS LAST RESIDENT

Rosalind Duane rduane@nsnews.com

A light on the past

ELAINE Graham was raised in the slums of London, far from the multi-hued green of nature. “There was nothing on my street when I was growing up,” she recalls. “I had lots of play-friends, loads of kids to play with, but there wasn’t even a geranium on a windowsill.” Many years later, Graham is now surrounded by 75 hectares of the largest first-growth stand of coastal-elevation trees in the Lower Mainland. Her home is nestled among the remaining structures at the base of Point Atkinson Lighthouse, which stands on a craggy promontory at the edge of Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver. She has spent half her life here, and is eager to tell the story of her neck of the woods. Graham moved to the Point Atkinson Lighthouse station with her husband Donald and two young sons in 1980. Donald became the last of the lighthouse keepers at the site (along with senior keeper Gerry Watson) when the lighthouse was automated in 1996. The Grahams stayed on in one of the two keeper’s houses, she as a park attendant and he as a groundskeeper. “He loved working outdoors,” says Graham of her husband, who passed away in 2003. She still lives in the house they shared, which sits in the shadow of the 18.3-metre tall tower of the still-working lighthouse. Driven by solar panels and batteries in the base of the tower, the motor that turns the small light in the tower run on 12-volt batteries. “It’s a small motor and a tiny little light bulb,” says Graham. This year, the little light in the large tower celebrates its 100th anniversary alongside West Vancouver’s centennial, and Graham is hoping to bring attention to the ailing site.

THIS rusty bunker on the east beach at Point Atkinson Lighthouse station once housed a searchlight. Point Atkinson Lighthouse was constructed in 1912, replacing an earlier wooden structure that was built in 1875. Its hexagonal, reinforced-concrete design was considered an innovation for lighthouses at the time, and it’s because of that the lighthouse eventually received official designation as a National Historic Site of Canada. Unfortunately, that designation doesn’t come with federal funds to maintain the site. “It’s appalling how the station looks now in comparison to when we first came here years ago in 1970,” says Graham. “It (was) like a tightly run ship. All the railings had to be smartly painted red. The buildings were red and white. There was constant painting inside and out of the buildings.” In addition to painting, all of the equipment for the light and the foghorn had to be kept clean and serviced.

“In the early days, lightkeepers had to shovel coal to raise steam to make the foghorn go,” explains Graham. Once the fog had cleared, the keeper had to wipe everything down, clean off all the equipment and then get the coal ready for the next time the fog rolled in. “It was an enormous amount of physical work in the early days.” That work was gradually reduced over the years, and Graham often found herself filling in as a relief keeper during her family’s time there. She helped paint, maintain the grounds and file regular weather reports. The information was reported via VHF radio to the coast guard. Both sea and sky conditions were reported, and so was visibility. “I can see across to UBC, so it’s one-five, that’s 15 miles,” says Graham giving a sample report. Lightkeepers also reported wind conditions, which were recorded on an anemometer, a device that measures wind speed. Point Atkinson still reports wind conditions for maritime traffic based on recordings from an anemometer at the base of the light tower, but the information is now transmitted digitally. These days, Graham provides a fire index for Lighthouse Park, but instead of going up to the tower and reading the anemometer, she just phones in to the coast guard to get the reading. “I could actually probably guess the wind speed by now after 30 years.” As a park attendant, Graham picks up litter, refills maps in dispensers, leads interpretive walks and assists school groups, among other things. She often meets park visitors who tell her about the foghorn they hear bellowing its low and slow call across the inlet through the pea soup of gloomy winter evenings. She has to inform them it’s not the Point Atkinson Lighthouse horn See With page 4

they’re hearing; it’s a ship’s horn making that noise. “The foghorns were part of the Vancouver soundscape for about 100 years from 1888 to 1998. Since then it’s been silent,” explains Graham. Point Atkinson became known for its diaphone foghorn, with its deep and powerful two-toned warning. That was replaced by an air-chime foghorn, which was eventually replaced by an electronic foghorn. The electronic horn was triggered by an electronic beam projected over the ocean. If the beam was interrupted at two miles, it automatically triggered the horn. After it sometimes called

out unnecessarily when the beam was triggered by bright sunlight or a falling snowflake, the foghorn was disconnected. The lighthouse’s story intersected with global events when the surrounding park became home to a small contingent of Canadian troops during the Second World War. “The army was here in Lighthouse Park and was part of the light station,” says Graham. “In fact, the keeper’s wife had to feed the first recruits who were here. It was her job to cook for them and provide their meals.” Acting as a signal station, the site had a searchlight that lined up with one at UBC. Behind the station there were huts in the park to house the soldiers, as well as a bunkhouse, a dining hall, an ablutions hut, an officer’s mess and a small engineer’s

hut. “There were quite a few buildings in all,” notes Graham. About four of those buildings are still standing. In the years since the lighthouse was automated, all the ancillary buildings that are part of the station have fallen into disrepair, says Graham. One of the buildings that deteriorated was the radio building, which served a dual purpose as a fog-alarm building. Graham says the structure, which housed the original Fresnel lens used for the lighthouse along with other artifacts, was about to be lost. Then in 2009, after pressure from the Point Atkinson Lighthouse Subcommittee of the West Vancouver Historical Society, Fisheries and Oceans Canada See Upkeep page 5

refurbished the exterior of the building. The roof was replaced, hardy plank siding was added and the windows were upgraded. It was a welcome move, says Graham, who is a key figure in the lighthouse subcommittee, known as PALS. But the repair brought into focus some of the murkiness around who is responsible for the upkeep of the lighthouse-station-area buildings. “The light station is really in a kind of jurisdictional limbo,” says Graham. The park itself is a federal asset. As a working maritime beacon, the lighthouse falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, but Graham says it is unclear who will pay to maintain the buildings on the station site. West Vancouver doesn’t see it that way, however. “For me, it’s not so much in limbo as the beginning of a long process,” says Brent Leigh, deputy chief administrative officer at the district. In 2010, the federal government initiated a divestiture process to unload about 1,000 lighthouses across the country. The plan was to sell the lighthouses to businesses or community groups who could pay for their upkeep, and Point Atkinson was on the list. “Members of our community and the district were concerned that what we call ‘Class A’ lighthouses not be sold off and certainly Point Atkinson lighthouse. So we made contact with both Parks Canada and DFO and we’re in a process with them of withdrawing Point

He calls the lighthouse an

iconic asset, and when asked if there is any chance the lighthouse could be torn down as its ownership and upkeep scenario are determined, he answers quickly: “Oh my goodness, no.” Recently, PALS asked the District of West Vancouver to fund repairs to the blockhouse, a small building on the lawn below the tower. An estimate put the repair cost at $20,000 for exterior repairs only, and the district has agreed to pay $12,000, but has asked the West Vancouver Historical Society to raise $8,000 for the project. The non-profit group does receive some grant money, but president Ann Brousson notes with various projects in the works, including restoration of Hollyburn Lodge and centennial celebrations, the funds might not be available. The society meets again in September and will discuss the blockhouse then. Graham says she would like the station to eventually become an interpretive or education centre for the public, but at this point is just trying to save one building at a time. Right now, the blockhouse is “full of junk and dust and spiders,” but it used to house the engine that powered the searchlight during the Second World War. “This is a heritage building,” says Graham, adding she hopes more individuals or groups will step forward for the cause. Although the lighthouse is now automated and the last official keepers are gone, Graham remains the station’s steadfast caretaker. “I just did this because I’m still here. Fitting the bill I

N another let-them-eat-cake moment in the political world, it’s recently been revealed that Premier Christy Clark’s office racked up close to half a million dollars on credit cards last year. The figure is noteworthy, because it’s twice what Clark’s predecessor Gordon Campbell spent. Predictably, the premier’s office defended the expenses as the cost of doing (and wooing) business. Some of the expenses are justified; Airfare, for instance, is hard to argue with. But other items like expensive restaurant meals and visits to wineries are likely to raise more eyebrows. Nobody expects our elected officials to live or work like monks; we don’t expect visiting government leaders to bring their coffee in Tim Hortons togo cups. But when a figure like that

you said it “I hit a roadblock at the Westview Highway entrance. OK, no problem, I’m not (shaking) in my pants or anything. I get to the officer: ‘Have you had anything to drink tonight?’ I can’t lie; I say: ‘Yes, I had a drink at the Taphouse.’” Karina Stampfli recounts the events leading to a failed breathalyzer test that left her with a suspended driver’s licence and a mission to inform people about the perils of drinking and driving (from an Aug. 1 news story). ••• “You know that feeling you get when you first wake up in the morning and nothing feels real? That’s what it feels like now.” North Vancouver rower Lauren Wilkinson describes the surreal feeling of capturing a silver medal at the London Olympics (from an Aug. 3 news story). ••• “There’s a fish that just fell out of a tree.” Jan Bailey recalls the cedarneedle covered fish, a cichlid, she saved after it dropped unexpectedly into her backyard (from an Aug. 3 news story).

suddenly doubles, it’s always cause for a second look. That’s especially true when austerity is being preached as a character-building exercise for everyone else. Most of B.C.’s public servants are lucky if they’ve managed to hang on to their jobs. This latest tidbit from Clark’s office comes not long after the resignation of former federal minister Bev Oda, who certainly set new standards in availing herself of taxpayers’ largesse, in bills for limousines, swanky hotel stays and a now-infamous $16 glass of orange juice. Clark’s office hasn’t reached those levels, but the doubling of the Visa bills certainly rankles when the rest of the bureaucracy has been told to tighten its belt. Seems like there’s one standard for those at the top — and another for everyone else.

restaurant and retail tenants will move in. Rentals here would be revenue generators. The quaint Pacific Great Eastern Railway Station and adjoining parking lot just east of Lonsdale Quay sit atop pilings, and redevelopment is inevitable. Could be more retail, but Bell notes that the city wants to create “walkable flows,” and one idea would see a small new outdoor theatre built on the property as part of a public amenity arrangement with a developer. Beloved by railroad buffs, the old station will be maintained, but likely at a new site nearby. Moving eastward, the new stage at Shipbuilders Square, with its giant crane, is already a hit with summer concertgoers, and the night market at the long pier has proven successful. The Pier 7 restaurant, owned by the Pinnacle Hotel, is a legitimately hot destination for romantic dates, but Bell agrees something else is needed to keep the area alive during mid-week daylight hours. The solution could be the long-awaited North Vancouver Museum — a proposed joint city-anddistrict venture that would replace the existing facility at Presentation House. Bell leads us into the 9,000 sq ft. Lot 4 building east of the music stage and in front of the hotel. It’s a huge space with tremendous exposed beam work. With the addition, say, of more glass and a partial mezzanine floor, it would make a dramatic waterfront addition. A modern attraction with interactive, changing heritage displays for younger visitors and a First Nations exhibition for tourists would keep the place humming through the year. A bright reception hall with harbour views could draw excellent revenues See Dead page 8

Take a vacation inside a stranger’s head

WHEN you’re on vacation, staying in ritzy hotels is most definitely the bomb.

Going Coastal

Kate Zimmerman demanding that renters take it off immediately to preserve it for the next guest? People are odd, and they are odd in infinitely different ways that I find strangely gripping. So whenever we’re considering a vacation, I comb websites like Vacation Rental By Owner for hours, trying to imagine myself in the photographs of the rentable spots on offer there. We like to cook for ourselves as much as possible when we’re away, so a decent kitchen is a must. If it’s smartly laid out and properly supplied with knives and pots, it provides a luxurious contrast to the hellish mess of our own cooking space. For Stanley and me, that perk is almost as good as the king-sized bed in a posh hotel. When you travel as a family, there has to be room to sprawl, and renting a home rather than a hotel

neighbourhood was mercifully free of gunfire. One house we booked in the States, however, actually did feature gunfire up the street one night in 2011. According to the TV news the next day, however, there were no actual murders or injuries, so we were game enough to rent it again this year. You couldn’t beat the deck, hot tub and barbecue setup and the price was certainly right. It wasn’t as perfect as the place I stayed recently,

though. Calgary friends were on vacation out of town during the week in which we suddenly decided to visit, and they said we could get their key from a caretaker and make ourselves comfortable. What bliss it was to be in a family home with acres of room and lashings of light, not to mention a regular housekeeper to tidy in our wake. On the day we arrived, I went on a cooking spree for our absent hosts, who don’t adore cooking but happen

to have the kitchen of my dreams. There was plenty of counter space, but even better, the place was a triumph of organization. In the pantry, everything was neatly and logically stored and clearly marked. I felt as though I were living in a domestic fantasy. Sunshine, cleanliness, extreme organization and silence. I hadn’t realized how much I love those things. Maybe I should book myself into a monastery next. kate@katezimmerman.ca

But given the choice between shelling out for the sort of middle-of-the-road hostelry that my family can afford and renting a real, if modest, home from its owner, I’m in the latter camp. There’s something fabulous about staying in another family’s domicile or holiday home when the people who ordinarily live there are absent. You get inside the brain of another householder and see, just a little, how that person ticks. In my opinion, there’s a back-story to that experience that is far more stimulating than the wall-to-wall blandness for which ordinary hotels seem to strive. This is true even if you spend much of your time in the rental gazing at the owners’ collectibles, wondering why she is so entranced by pugs, or why he considers “Hang in there, baby” to be a witty enough phrase that he’s posted it prominently in his living room since its heyday 40 years ago. You may also ponder why some people who rent out their places to strangers stuff them with fragile bric-abrac and ungainly furnishings that are guaranteed to physically collide. Why put a lacy coverlet over the bed’s duvet and then leave a note

room allows for a thoroughly relaxing time. I once spent days on VRBO searching for L.A. addresses that were suitably priced in safe-sounding neighbourhoods. We wound up with a fantastic yet affordable walkout basement in Malibu, right up the hill from a beachfront mansion reputedly owned by Brangelina, with a spectacular view of Zuma Beach and the coastline. We could lie in the hammock stretched between trees on “our” lawn and watch the waves dance half a mile below. It was heavenly, much better than advertised. That said, you really ought to pay attention to the comments of previous renters on vacation rental sites. One March break, we booked a condo in Oahu that other people had already strenuously complained about, just because it was the only one in our price range. When we arrived, we found that the foldout bed collapsed when folded out, that there were large holes in the faded drapes and that our fellow tenants staggered around the building like zombies. One pale, thin, talkative woman we met at the swimming pool had a black eye and volunteered an unlikely yarn about how she got it. The place was a complete dive, but in Hawaii, it hardly mattered: It’s not like snow was going to come whistling through chinks in the wall, and the

Oil will be economy’s undoing

Dear Editor: I’m writing in response to MP John Weston’s letter of July 29, in which he simultaneously promotes the construction of an oil pipeline and the need to improve environmental health (Oil, Environment Can Be on Same Team, North Shore News). Weston voted in favour of Harper’s omnibus budget bill C-38. Not only did the bill make a farce of the democratic

process, but it weakened our Fisheries Act and cut funding to important scientific research. The notion that reallocating our money for oil tanker safety and pipeline inspections is somehow improving our environmental health is simply delusional. I agree with Weston’s comment that we need to stay as “super natural as we are today,” but does he actually believe that building a pipeline across our

province will attain this goal? An oil pipeline would commit Canada to decades of pumping our fossil fuels around the world. Aside from the oil spills, how much would this contribute to global greenhouse gas emissions? How much would this improve our “environmental health?” It’s hard to see how pursuing this will improve the environment or the economy.

Are there not serious economic consequences associated with a changing climate? We don’t need politicians that promote environmentally disastrous projects; we need real, thoughtful, careful, forwardthinking leadership. Weneedpeoplewhorealize that a healthy environment is a prerequisite for any economic endeavour. Mike Richardson North Vancouver

A formula for tax relief: Cut mayors by 67%

Dear Editor: You quote West Vancouver mayor Michael Smith as

While we are at it, let’s get rid of two thirds of the North Shore mayors, city halls and all the rest of the triplicated staff/ services we have here. What a saving that would be. Allan Goulding North Vancouver

if rented for social or business functions, and Pinnacle Hotel manager Tim Morrison confirms they’d be interested. After so many past disappointments, you can feel this project finally inching toward fruition. Nearby, the old shipyard Machine Shop site — Lot 5 — remains available. On an Olympic-season note, expect beach volleyball courts to appear there soon. Capilano University may have longer-term interest in the site, though, for the creation of an arts-oriented satellite campus. Pinnacle has three more residential buildings planned farther to the east. There’s a lot percolating here, culturally and business-wise. As Bell notes, “The city has definitely come alive in a number of areas, and Lower Lonsdale is key among them.” ••• For another upbeat city discovery, check out Loutet Farm at Rufus Avenue and 14th Street. Affiliated with UBC’s Edible Garden Project and managed through North Shore Neighbourhood House, the farm is run by volunteers and one full-time employee, Gavin Wright. Watermain Project

Trans Canada Highway Bridge

Pedestrian Underpass - East Side of Lynn Creek From August 9 through to September 30, 2012 North Vancouver District will carry out watermain work underneath the Trans Canada Highway Bridge at Lynn Creek. This project will involve installing a new watermain from St. Denis Avenue to Mountain Highway, including along the pedestrian path underneath the bridge. The construction area will be marked off with steel fencing, signage and traffic control. Pedestrians and cyclists are encouraged to use the west side of Lynn Creek as an alternate route. During construction there will also be temporary shut downs of residential water supply in the area, and District staff will notify residents prior to any planned interruption of service. Thank you for your cooperation as the District carries out this important work. For more information, please call the District’s Utilities Department at 604-990-3860.

The summer sees more people travelling over the border, making the most of the warm weather and school vacation. It’s also the time many discover they’re under-insured when they incur steep unexpected medical expenses in a foreign country. These can, however, be easily avoided by asking a few pertinent questions before you go. Do I need travel insurance for a quick trip across the border? Accidents are just as likely to happen on a day trip as any other day at home or at work. Driving on unknown routes could potentially increase the odds. As always, it’s best to ensure you’re fully covered. Does BC Medical Services Plan cover everything? Provincial health care is unlikely to cover all of your medical expenses incurred out of province, or overseas. In fact, the Canadian government recommends that travellers purchase travel insurance when leaving the country because of the extremely high cost of medical care outside of Canada. City promises to continue issuing tickets From page 1

NEWS photo Mike Wakefield

A City of North Vancouver bylaw officer issues a ticket to street performer Megan Regehr Aug. 1 for using an amplifier near the Civic Plaza.

Regehr and Barnes have had several productive and friendly discussions with the city’s manager of bylaws Brad McRae, said the singer, but the two sides are at an impasse. McRae offered Regehr a chance to take out a permit that would allow for amped music, similar to those used by vendors at the farmers’ market held in the plaza on Wednesdays, but Barnes said that is a non-starter on principle. “We absolutely will not ever have her enter into, on public lands, a licensing agreement to express herself whatsoever,” he said. The bylaw is part of a worrying trend of governments “slowly imposing themselves where they don’t belong,” Barnes added. Regehr said that she feels for her fellow street performers across Canada who face similar restrictions while trying to practise their art and make a living. After performances, Regehr asks listeners to sign her petition calling on the councils of Vancouver and the City of North Vancouver to repeal any bylaws that may infringe on expression rights. Among the signatories is Bruce Hawkshaw, former city clerk, who signed after asking her a few questions, said Regehr. “He signed it, and as I was walking out, he said “The reason I was wondering was because I wrote that bylaw,’” she said. As staff issued one of the recent tickets, a passerby noticed and was inspired to sign, said Barnes. “A Persian gentleman was signing her (petition). He was almost in tears when he saw her being written up. He said: ‘This is why I left my country,’” Barnes said. But the city is sticking to its guns, saying it only enforces the noise bylaw after someone has made a complaint, which Regehr’s mic and amp have drawn, according to city manager McRae. Speaking to the North Shore News, he could not say how many complaints or who made them, however. “What I can say is they are numerous and consistent,” he said. Regehr called that “B.S.,” saying she has only ever had support from the neighbouring businesses. Speaking to the News, the managers and staff at Money Mart, the Eighties restaurant, Ocean Wellness and Scotiabank all praised Regehr and her music. “Why would we file a complaint when we can’t even hear her?” said James Findlay, Money Mart manager. “Customers come in and say, ‘Isn’t that beautiful?’”

Summer Sale on Now!

In the meantime, McRae said he will continue to have his officers issue tickets as long as Regehr refuses to unplug. “Unless I’m formally directed in council, I am in charge of dealing with the bylaws,” he said. “The issue is not busking; the issue is not the city going after an individual. The issue is the complaints about amplification. We are responding to complaints. We are not actively hunting this down.” Prior to taking to North Vancouver streets and venues, Regehr, as Babe Coal, had a regular gig at B.B. King’s blues club in Nashville, Tennessee.

Hwy reliability not ‘effectively’ gauged From page 1

The report concluded that the project was well managed through the design and construction phases, but that since the highway was finished at the end of 2009 the province has not been measuring how well the highway has succeeded in improving safety or reliability, according to original benchmarks set out in the contract. That contract includes an annual “safety performance payment” to the private-sector partner, to be paid after comparing Sea-to-Sky accident statistics per kilometre with the average of four other comparable B.C. highways, Doyle wrote in the report.

But he said the ministry hasn’t measured that — despite the fact “the data does exist to allow this kind of measurement.” The original contract contained annual “performance incentive payments” of $1 million a year, adding up to a total of $26 million over the life of the contract. In its response to the report, the Ministry of Transportation and Highways wrote that it is confident the project has improved both safety and reliability. “The audit report leaves the impression that it is unclear whether the Sea to Sky Highway is safer now than before the improvement project,” the ministry stated. “Ministry data clearly shows

that there have been significant reductions in accidents on the Sea to Sky Highway since the main improvements were completed.” According to police-reported figures, the total number of serious accidents on the highway decreased from 219 in 2004 to 124 in 2011 — a more-than 40 per cent reduction. The number of accident fatalities is also down, from six in 2005 to two in 2011, while the number of injuries reported has dropped from 97 in 2006 to 57 in 2011. Assistant Auditor General Bill Gilhooly said his office doesn’t dispute that the safety of the highway has likely improved. But he said the ministry has not been measuring that in the way specified in the contract. Doyle wrote. In its response, the ministry noted it “has Doyle said during construction, electronic sensing equipment was installed that was heard from communities in the corridor that they supposed to measure vehicle travel time between believe there have been economic development different points on the highway and to document benefits and community growth as a result” of the travel time delays. Horseshoe Bay fire damages duplex Jen St. Denis jstdenis@nsnews.com

A Horseshoe Bay homeowner who stepped out to buy milk Thursday afternoon returned to find his house on fire. The fire started on the deck of the duplex and was discovered by West Vancouver police — who arrived at the home as the same time as the owner. The officers were responding to an intruder alarm that had been triggered at the residence, said Martin Ernst, assistant fire

chief for West Vancouver Fire and Rescue. The house was “locked up tight,” according to Ernst, and there was no sign of a break-in. The fire spread to the inside of the house and also broke through the firewall to the other side of the duplex, whose owners were away on vacation. Crews were kept busy for around an hour before the fire was out. The blaze caused “minimal fire and some smoke damage” to both homes, according to a release. Investigators are still searching for the cause of the fire.

Dave has long been a supporter of the North Shore Dragon Busters, inspired by the journey of his mother Kathy, who has been a team member for the last five years and involved in dragon boating for more than a decade. Dave continues to raise funds for the team through sticker sales at his gym, and in the past, has earmarked funds from his annual gala fundraiser, Evening at Ringside. Having the team train at his facility is just one more means of supporting their efforts.

“There’s something about a lady who’s gone through what these ladies have gone through and the fact that they wrap their hands (and are learning to box). There’s something empowering about it, I love it,” says Dave. He suggested the team come into his gym after hearing they were looking to do some cross training. “This is the best cross training you can get. It’s so specific to what (they) do,” he says. “It’s core, it’s twist, it’s strength and it’s explosive and that’s what you want. We do a lot of team cross training, but we’ve never delved into a specialty group per se. It’s usually the hockey players or the soccer players that are coming in here.” More than half of the Dragon Busters have decided to

work out at Griffins and started attending hour-long sessions on Mondays last month under the guidance of coach Malae Blakeley. “We work body parts that are necessary for their rowing and paddling,” says Blakeley. The class starts with a dynamic warm-up, like calisthenics or light cardio, and then moves into a boxing component. “We don’t do a lot of specific technique, but they’re learning proper execution of punches, jabs and crosses,” she says. Blakeley has already noticed improvement in the ladies and a marked difference between those who’ve come to more classes. “More than anything, they seem to really enjoy that physical release that comes along with it,” she says. “They’re not used to some of that cardio. Boxing is an anaerobic workout. People are used to long bouts of cardio, whereas boxing is tiny little short bursts of energy. So it’s a different form of workout for them, but it’s their willingness to learn that’s inspiring. Something new, they’re ready to take it on.” The Dragon Busters’ level of camaraderie continues to impress her. “It’s this real communal effort to train together both on water and off. She’s been enjoying getting to know the women and hear their stories as the weeks progress. The relationship has also proved meaningful for her as her own mother has been diagnosed with a different form of cancer. “To see these women who have gone past that and are working towards making their

own lives better as a result of something negative happening to them, I find it just incredibly empowering — both as a woman but also just in the industry. Our industry, and fitness, we want people to move, whatever that may be, we want people to move and these women are moving a lot,” says Blakeley. Dragon Busters ‘tougher than nails’ From page 14 athlete,” says Kathy, 65. “You really feel like you’re doing your training. You hardly ever feel like a cancer survivor.” Kathy was diagnosed with breast cancer in the 1990s and, the result of successful treatment, is believed to have been cancer-free since 1997. She got involved in breast cancer survivor dragon boating based on the recommendation of a friend. “The only thing in common is breast cancer. . . . But it’s an amazing team, so supportive of each other, such good camaraderie. It’s pretty wonderful to belong to that team,” she says, of the Dragon Busters. Kathy is grateful for Dave’s support over the years. “It was kind of interesting to me and very beautiful to me that the very second he got his own business going, and was able to, he supported breast cancer, he supported our team. I was very touched by that,” she says.

“He’s always done things for our boat,” she adds. Dave is likewise proud of his mom. “She can hit pretty hard,” he laughs. Both Dave and Blakeley are impressed by the team’s performance thus far. “These girls are tough. They’re tougher than nails. They push back. They’re already the champ,” he says. As well, Dave and Blakeley are pleased to see that in addition to team members, a number of honorary Dragon Busters — family members and friends — have also decided to attend the weekly sessions. “When my mom had breast cancer, it was her disease,” says Dave. “It wasn’t a family thing, they kept it very private. Nowadays it’s treated as something that the family can understand and all help with. I think that we try and do that with this training, we bring their families into it.” The new partnership between Griffins and the Dragon Busters speaks to a major mis-

sion of the gym, which is empowerment, says Dave. “The whole reason that Griffins exists is to try and build confidence in people,” he says. Programming is not intended to create professional boxers, rather to positively change the lives of people of all ages. Boxing can sometimes seem intimidating to people, which is a perception Dave works to change. “A goal has always been of mine to try and show people a different side of it,” he says. “One of the hardest parts is walking through the front door. And I think that once they try it, it’s tough I’m not going to lie to you, we run a tough program, but all in all, if you can get past those three weeks, we call it the three-week hump, all you’re going to see is results and all you’re going to see is improvement.” For more information on the North Shore Dragon Busters, visit www.dragonbusters.ca and Griffins Boxing and Fitness, visit www.griffinsboxing.com.

SENIORS THIRD ANNUAL SENIORS QUIZ

Put your knowledge to the test IT’S a long weekend.

Time to kick back and have a little fun. Today, we feature the third Seniors Quiz in the long history of this column. Feedback on last year’s quiz was that it was far too easy and a little too dour. I’ve changed the format in today’s quiz — no more true or false questions. It’s a multiple choice quiz now and I’ve added a few trivia questions to make it more fun. Seniors around my office who tested the quiz answered on average 10 of the 14 questions correctly. Not bad, but let’s see if you can do better. Pencils ready? Let’s begin. 1. TASTE

Travelling the world, one sip at a time Notable Potables

Tim Pawsey

THE Hired Belly has been doing a little virtual globe trotting over the past few weeks, including a side trip to South Africa, which this month is in the spotlight at BC Liquor Stores.

While geography places it undisputedly in the new world, the Cape is very much underpinned by its Old World heritage surrounding Dutch settlement and, in winemaking terms, the arrival of the Bordelais, who proved to be much better winemakers than the Dutch. Connections to Bordeaux remain strong, with more than a few joint ownerships that see the involvement of

several prominent winemaking dynasties. With such a range of varieties and styles, South Africa is surprisingly under-appreciated, offering everything from basic patio sippers to serious Chenin Blanc (a rarity for most regions), Champagneflattering sparklers (such as Graham Beck Brut, curiously no longer stocked at BCLS but available at Everything Wine, $28.99), and fullfruited reds, which can hold their own with wines from elsewhere at twice the price. The current BCLS push features wines from across the spectrum but they generally tend to underscore the region’s reputation for delivering good value at every price point. You can check them out at a free tasting, Aug. 10 at BCLS’ signature liquor store at 39th and Cambie streets. You can also enter an online draw to win two nights in Osoyoos, courtesy of Wines of South Africa. The prize includes accommodation and a gift card towards meals in their acclaimed wine bar. For details visit www.wosa. co.za/canada. Here’s a few worth chasing: Thelema Mountain Vineyard Shiraz 2007: You

might, quite rightly, assume that Shiraz is synonymous with Australia but this luscious, ripe red comes from Stellenbosch, the ancestral home of Cape wine. Very much in the New World camp, with black current on the nose followed by layers of generous black fruit and lingering peppery, spicy notes wrapped in approachable tannins. Just coming into its own. Grab a good steak and slather it in peppercorns. (BCLS $28.99) Graceland Cabernet Sauvignon 2009: Wellbalanced ripe fruit with good structure yields bright cassis and red berry notes with an appealing savoury streak with measured oak and a lengthy

end. The gorgeous packaging is as tasteful as the wine. (BCLS, Everything Wine, $29.99) The Grinder Pinotage 2011: If you like your reds the way you like your Starbucks, then this aptly named, roasted mocha topped interpretation of the Cape’s own grape more than fits the bill. It’s a mouthful of roasted black berry and serious chocolate notes with approachable tannins and a touch of spice. They say smoked pork ribs and we’re all over that. As easy on the wallet as on the palate. (BCLS, $14.49) Spier Signature Chenin Blanc 2011: This wine has summer written all over it.

And it also shows just how well the Cape does Chenin. Tropical notes of guava, apple and citrus through a fresh and lively palate buoyed by form acidity. Great value at BCLS $14.25, Everything Wine $14.49. Two Oceans Sauvignon Blanc 2011: Ten-dollar wines are tough to find on

our local shelves (OK, this one’s $10.49), but next time you’re wondering what to take to that patio party that you won’t mind if somebody else guzzles, chill down this uncomplicated but easy drinking goosberry and grassy-toned Sauv Blanc and it will do just fine. Screwcap; also Everything Wine, $10.99.

My friend doesn’t say a word as I negotiate hairpin curves — after two days driving in Sicily, we have an unspoken rule not to talk during what could be stressful times. However, this hilly route to the town of Noto turns out to be rather peaceful. We see no signs of life, and many of the streets are one-way. For a time, it seems as if we are lost in a maze. Then we arrive at our destination and gasp in delight at what is surely one of Europe’s prettiest tucked-away baroque treasures. Noto (population 23,000), in the southwestern tip of Sicily, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. It has a disaster four centuries ago to thank for the designation: in 1693, the town was the epicentre of a massive earthquake, which led to its rebuilding in a lavish style that came to be known as Sicilian baroque. The result is an architecturally splendid city of flamboyant churches, palaces and civic buildings, decorated with richly carved columns, grotesque masks, towering belfries and elaborate wroughtiron balconies. A stroll along the old town’s photo Judi Lees/Meridian Writers’ Group main avenue, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and connecting THE ornate decoration on this balcony is typical of the baroque style to be found streets shows us some of the on the palazzos in the Sicilian town of Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. highlights. Road trips are all right for dogs too

Canine Connection Joan Klucha

THERE are days when I’ve just gotta get outta town.

The urge to set my sights in a direction and go takes over. I want to see where the winding road takes me. Maybe it’s my gypsy ancestors calling me, reminding me not to plant my roots too deep for any length of time, or maybe it’s a way of letting off steam after a particularly stressful time. When I give in to this urge I never really know where I will end up. I have found myself at the Calgary Stampede, at a little western town in Washington state, and at a roadside restaurant in Cache Creek having the best hamburger I have ever had in my life, just to name a few. Rarely, if ever, do I leave my

faithful canine companions at home. Road trips are just not the same without those hounds sitting in the back seat, hanging their heads out the window watching the world fly by at 120 kilometres an hour. Like most dogs they love riding in cars, or in my case a truck. Road trips that take most people three or four hours take me about twice as long when I bring my dogs. Stopping every hour or so to let the dogs out for a stretch and do their business usually ends up with me taking them for a short hike through the forest at whatever rest stop we find along the way. This little stretch and walk helps them stay settled in the

truck when we are on the road, otherwise they get restless, start to pant and whimper in impatience. Sometimes following my dogs on these unknown trails in other parts of the province has lead me to some pretty cool things, like an abandoned railway tunnel, a stream once panned for gold and a small lake that was peaceful and secluded enough to go for a quick swim with the dogs and without a swimsuit. I choose not to put my dogs in crates in the covered bed of my pick-up. I like having them close when we are on long drives so they sit in the back seat. Looking out the side-view mirrors and seeing their happy

faces hanging out the windows always brings a smile to my face. I’m not driving to get somewhere. The drive itself is part of the adventure, and for me sharing that part with them makes better memories. Because I tend to follow the direction the wind is blowing on these ventures, I make sure I have supplies for my dogs. A first-aid kit is a must. Many high-end pet stores carry first-aid kits for dogs, but if you can’t find one, making one is easy. Gauze, antibiotic ointment, vet wrap, a child’s sock (to cover an injured paw to prevent licking) and saline solution are the minimum basics. Carry enough fresh water for you and your dog. Trying to find clean water can sometimes be like trying to find diamonds.

Pet Page

Crossing the border into the United States is not as difficult with a dog as it used to be as long as the dog looks clean, healthy and alert. I have rarely been asked for a health check or ID for my dogs when I cross the border, but I carry it with me with my passport just in case. Dogs are required to have been vaccinated for rabies at least 30 days before entry into the United States, and you may be required to show proof. They also need to have some form of identification, be it a microchip, tattoo, or collar with tags stating name, owner and contact information. Road trips don’t have to be long excursions, but whatever they are if you find the gypsy spirit calling, pack a few essentials and your dog and see where the road takes you.

YOUR NORTH SHORE GUIDE to THE GAMES PEOPLE PLAY

Hingis, Peliwo bring buzz to Open Current and former teen tennis stars take centre stage at Hollyburn

Andy Prest aprest@nsnews.com

FOR one set, it looked like North Vancouver teen tennis phenom Filip Peliwo might not have to pay his dues like most everyone else as he makes the jump from the junior ranks to the pros.

Peliwo was on stadium court at Hollyburn Country Club Tuesday night taking on Taiwan’s Jimmy Wang in the evening feature match of the opening round of the Odlum Brown VanOpen. Facing a player nine years older than him and 409 spots higher in the world singles rankings, the 18year-old Wimbledon junior champion went toe-to-toe with Wang throughout the first set. Mixing in some go-for-it shots, rookie mistakes and solid strokes, Peliwo kept it close in the first, battling off two set points while down 5-4 to eventually send the set to a tiebreaker. In the tiebreak he again fell behind, struggling early to trail 4-1, but recovered with a comeback punctuated by a scorching forehand winner to tie it at 4-4. That, however, was the high point of the match for Peliwo as Wang would go on to win the next three points to take the set before taking complete control in the second to win 7-6(4), 6-0. After the match Peliwo said he was disappointed that he lost but happy that he played confident tennis and went for his shots. Those shots didn’t always find the court but at least he went down swinging. “I know I didn’t play my best but I went for it — I can’t really regret anything,” he said. “I go for my shots. If I’m not on top of my game I can adjust sometimes and play it a bit safer but at this level it’s tougher to do that because if you play too safe then they’re going to roll you off the court.” Peliwo is in the middle of a breakout season on the junior tour that saw him reach the Australian and French Open finals before breaking through with his win at Wimbledon. Tuesday’s match, his first home court contest as a pro, was not as pressure-packed as those junior Grand Slam finals, he said. A large section of fans cheered him back to the court after every changeover and even got a wave going. “I don’t even know those people, that made it even better — I owe them a big thanks,” he said with a laugh. “It was kind of a more relaxed atmosphere in the sense that everyone was having fun and cheering loud. I thought I’d NEWS photo Paul McGrath loosen up a little bit and enjoy the moment — people were doing the wave or saying ‘Let’s go Peliwo’ — it takes the SWISS tennis legend Martina Hingis swats a backhand during an exhibition match at pressure off your shoulders.” Hollyburn Country Club Wednesday as part of the Odlum Brown VanOpen. For more The pressure will return, however, as Peliwo continues to photos from the Open visit the Photo Galleries section at www.nsnews.com. make the transition from junior to the pros. He’s got a few junior events left, highlighted by the U.S. Open, before he makes the jump full-time to the professional ranks. When next year’s VanOpen rolls around Peliwo hopes to be well on his way up the rankings and in a position to do some damage at the tournament he grew up watching. “I’m looking forward to playing back here in years to come,” he said. “The crowd was amazing — it was the first time they’ve seen me and they’re already so great.” Amongst the crowd watching Peliwo on Tuesday night was a member of tennis royalty — five-time Grand Slam singles winner Martina Hingis (“I tried not to think about that,” said Peliwo after his match). The retired Swiss superstar was on hand to show off a tennis fashion line she designed with Vancouver-based apparel company Tonic. Despite Peliwo’s loss, Hingis said she was impressed with the North Vancouverite’s game and resumé. “He’s done great — I wish the best of luck for him,” she told the North Shore News. “The transition from junior tennis to professional, it’s not always easy but he seems to be fine with it. He had a few opportunities which he didn’t take but he’ll learn from that. He just has to keep his head up and keep going, moving forward.” Hingis knows a thing or two about being a young tennis star — she burst onto the professional scene at the age of 14 and still hold a number of youngest-ever records, including becoming the youngest player ever to be ranked No. 1 in the world. From the age of eight Peliwo has maintained that his goal is to become the No. 1 player in the world and Hingis had a few simple words of wisdom to offer him. “Just keep working hard,” she said. “He’s got the game to back NEWS photo Kevin Hill it up so he’s got a lot of potential.” NORTH Vancouver’s Filip Peliwo, fresh off his Wimbledon junior boys championship See Bester page 23 win, tracks the ball during an opening round match Tuesday at the VanOpen.

Seymour heat LIAM Pickrell of Mount Seymour fires a pitch in a playoff game during the Little League Juniors provincial championships played last week at West Vancouver’s Ambleside Park. Seymour made it all the way to the championship game but were defeated 16-2 in the final by a powerhouse Whalley team. Whalley will now go on to represent British Columbia at the Canadian championships in Lethbridge, Alta.

Bester wins doubles opener From page 22

On Wednesday it was Hingis who took centre stage at the VanOpen, taking on Canadian pro Sharon Fichman in an exhibition match. Charming the crowd with verbal jousts at her opponent, the umpires and even the crowd, Hingis kept the mood light. “No more drop shots,” she yelled at Fichman after the Canadian made her sprint to the net one too many times. On the next point, of course, Hingis scored with a delicate drop shot of her own. In fact, Hingis displayed a whole arsenal of shots in the match, showing the skill that made her a tennis legend. Though she hasn’t played a WTA match since retiring in late 2007, the 31year-old looked as if she could step right back onto the tour and compete for Grand Slam titles again. That, however, is not going to happen. “Playing one match is different than playing a whole tournament, being on the court all the time,” she said after finishing off a 6-3, 6-3 win over Fichman, adding that exhibition tennis is a lot different than the grind of playing day-afterday. “It’s fun to get out there and still get excited about playing. I’ve been playing a lot more this year — I just came from playing team tennis so I was well prepared. I was happy about that, that I

could still show some good tennis.” Hingis also had some very kind words for the event and the club, comparing Hollyburn favourably to another fairly famous tennis venue. “It’s really one of the prettiest clubs in the world that I’ve ever seen,” she said. “It’s close to even like Wimbledon, you know, with the views. It’s a different atmosphere but it’s just amazing with the ice rinks and the facilities, how it has so much to offer.” ••• Elsewhere at the Open North Vancouver’s Philip Bester was ousted in the first round in a tough three-set match against French qualifier Gleb Sakharov. Bester, however, rebounded to win his opening round doubles match with partner Phillip Simmonds of the United States, defeating the Australian duo of Chris Guccione and Matt Reid in straight sets. The two Phillips took on Belgium’s Maxime Authom and Ruben Bemelmans in a quarterfinal match Friday after press time in the stadium court evening feature. The women’s doubles final is scheduled for Saturday while the women’s singles and men’s doubles and singles finals will be played Sunday. For updated schedules and results visit www. vanopen.com.

AINSCOUGH, Grant Lee Age 86 years, passed away peacefully at Vancouver General Hospital on July 15, 2012. He is survived by his children; Tom (Heather), Chris (Nicole), Kathy (Steve), Louise (Scott), and Grandchildren: Jaki, William, Grady, Maximilian, and Josephine and predeceased by his wife, Jacquie. A man’s man, capable of surviving in the bush or the boardroom, he loved his wife and family, his friends, his garden, his cats, and the great outdoors. He was a generous mentor and a loyal friend. After graduating from UBC Forestry, Class of ’51, he had a long career; first with the BC Forest Service and then MacMillan Bloedel. Grant retired as the Vice President of Forestry, with an Arboretum named in his honour. He was a passionate forester and directly and indirectly helped plant millions of trees with MB and the Tree Canada Foundation. He served on numerous boards such as Flying Tankers, Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, & Variety Children’s Charity. His sense of humour and sharp wit was there to the end with stories retold and enhanced with more detail each time. His deep baritone singing voice graced many ears over the years (with favorite songs embellished sometimes with his own wording.) Ready to be reunited with Jacquie, his wife of 57 years, he dreamed of going swimming with her in the ocean, taking her dancing, and riding off in a Cadillac. Thank you to the staff at the O’Keefe where Grant lived and the medical team who cared for him at VGH. Emerson (Blonde) was born on September 17, 1919 on the family farm near Wiseton, Saskatchewan. He passed away at the North Shore Hospice, at the age of 92 on July 8, 2012, surrounded by his family.

LOST LADIES silver bracelet on July 27th. approx vic. of East 5th near St. Andrews. Please call 604-926-8194

Emerson was predeceased in 2011 by Isabel, his loving wife of 67 years, and in 2004 by their only son Robert (Bob). He is survived by “his girls” Phyllis (Bill Rapanos), Linda, and Carole (Pieter) Matthijsse and their children Hanna, Anders and Jenna. During WWII Dad was stationed in Victoria, BC where he served as a Sargent in the Army. While there Dad proposed to his childhood sweetheart (who in Dad’s words he’d met “when he was four and she was two.”) Soon after, they moved to Nelson, BC where Dad began his career with the Canadian Pacific Railroad and where they raised their family. Dad was an avid fisherman, grew an amazing garden and was one of those neighbours everyone wished they had. After retiring Dad and Mum spent 10 years enjoying the family cabin at Christina Lake. Dad would often say “they were the best years of his life”. His favourite pastime was watching the birds, and that he did for hours. When Dad and Mum moved to North Vancouver in October 2008 Dad carried on this love and was known to all the staff and residents at Sunrise of Lynn Valley as “The Bird Man of Sunrise.” Although he wasn’t able to be as involved this past year, he was happy to know that he had passed on his knowledge to Sandra...and that his years of experience would benefit others. Dad will be missed by all those who knew him. We are grateful for what he brought to our lives and we don’t have to look very far to see something that he either built or taught us to do. We will forever miss our handyman! Dad’s ability to persevere was admirable and he passed on to his children and grandchildren a strong work ethic.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Your romantic, creative, speculative winning streak continues. Recent delays and returnees from the past recede after Tuesday (though a love who has returned – if this occurred – might be worth keeping). By Wednesday onward, you are free to start projects, seek new relationships, and make important decisions. (Although your decisionmaking might be a little tentative until Aug. 22.) In the next two weeks you might roar ahead, chasing romance – and landing it. Your energy and charisma surge upward Sunday p.m.toTuesday.Start significant projects, especially creative/speculative ones. Taurus April 20-May 20: Delays and indecision end by midweek. You’re free to press forward, especially in food/shelter and realty areas, romance and creative projects, and money concerns. Retreat, rest Sunday to Tuesday – you can accomplish much in home areas, especially Monday daytime. Your energy and magnetism return Wednesday/Thursday: take Step One toward a major wish or goal. Chase money Friday p.m. (avoid deception, con artists) and Saturday. A dollar venture might begin Saturday; it has a lucky future. Until Aug. 24, your employment scene remains intense, wearying. Friends show new affection. Gemini May 21-June 20: You’re in your element– travel, communications, quick-minded friends and affectionate siblings fill your days. By Wednesday three weeks of delays, mistakes and indecision end. (Though a bit of indecision lasts for about two more weeks.) Sunday afternoon to Tuesday raises your hopes and might fulfill a wish around social life or romance. Speaking of amour, your romantic courage remains high for 18 more days – take advantage! Your luck and cheerfulness grow every week.Tuesday begins four weeks of money luck. Retreat midweek. Your energy, charisma soar Friday eve/Saturday.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Three weeks of delays end late Tuesday, freeing you to start new projects. You can march forward confidently, especially with money and purchases – but don’t buy anything if you first saw it after July 13. You become mildly lucky, attractive and gracious through August. Step softly at home, where conflicts can arise. An unsteady or “foundation poor” job or career project can collapse. If so, start again! Sunday’s mellow. This p.m. to Tuesday highlights your ambitions and relations with higher-ups (best Monday). Popularity, wish fulfillment and social delights visit midweek. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Your energy and charisma remain super-high. By midweek, recent delays, mistakes and indecision end. Start important projects, seek favours, make proposals, see and be seen, display your talents! In relationships, uncertainty and illusion are gone – forever. Plan on a very active social life, because it’s coming, will last to next June. Oddly, “sweet solitude” draws you also (all August) – balance this, use it for rest. Sunday to Tuesday bring wisdom, intellectual and travel events. Pursue career/prestige ambitions Wednesday/Thursday. Social joys, flirtation and popularity, late week. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Three weeks of delay, indecision and mistakes end Wednesday night. (The indecision might linger awhile longer.) Money flows swiftly to you (until August 23) but it will also quickly flow away: only buy what you need, at a low price. This week and next, discuss, plan or contemplate your career future (and its financial outlook) – especially Saturday, when a small seed is an oak tree in disguise! Generally, you’re tired, your stove’s on “pilot light.” Seek spirit, be kind to others. Luckiest days: Monday (money, sex); Wednesday/ Thursday (travel, love); and Saturday (career).

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Delays, mistakes and indecision end midweek. Charge into social affairs – your popularity, hopes, and flirtatious situations get a new life, a second chance, for two more weeks. You might start a love affair! A wish will come true in these areas. Sunday p.m. to Tuesday accents crucial relationships – Monday’s best. Wednesday/ Thursday bring intimacy, financial opportunities – and consequential action in either area. Gentle love, far travel, cultural involvements arise late week. This is your zone of great luck to mid-2013: Saturday/ Sunday (August 11/12) are a significant beginning. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Tuesday ends three weeks of delay and indecision, especially in career, VIP relations and prestige zones. These zones are now favoured, so push ahead, butter up VIPs, ask for more responsibility, etc. Abandon a crippled venture begun since July 14. In the weeks ahead, your work might involve government liaisons, management, administrative chores. Same period, avoid dark alleys and late clubs: you’re physically vulnerable. Wisdom, love, cultural and intellectual progress blesses you all month. The seeds of future success can be planted Saturday, in finances and intimacy – go! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Past delays end, especially in moral, intellectual, far travel, cultural and love zones. For two weeks ahead, pursue these areas primarily – and confidently. Big relationship changes loom over the next ten months: you might marry (or divorce, if you’re presently unhappy). Contemplate these now, look ahead, and place them in the context of your whole life. Sunday afternoon to Tuesday brings beauty, romance, a creative or gambling mood. Tackle chores or purchase machinery Wednesday/Thursday – success very likely. Partnerships, competition face new beginnings late week: good!

Find it in the Classifieds!

August 5 - 11, 2012 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: The need to delay, to catch up with the past (and past obligations/ opportunities) now ends (Tuesday) especially in financial, debt, investment, sexual, intimate and health matters. March forward confidently in these areas for the next two weeks. Bosses and higher-ups are temperamental until late August, but your peers, including prospective lovers (when I say “opposite sex,” gays complain) treat you with a new affection and warmth until early September. So it evens out. A big work project has been gestating “secretly” for a month or more: it might birth/emerge late week. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Recent delays, misunderstandings and barriers dissolve by midweek, especially in relationships, litigation, public dealings, negotiations, opportunities and relocation prospects. March forward in these areas, and in romance, love, creative and speculative projects. (One exception: DON’T proceed to litigation if you can avoid it. There would be lots of fees, little progress.) Your work scene becomes mildly lucky, co-workers affectionate. Talk, travel, paperwork early week. Home, rest, Wednesday/Thursday. Romance, beauty, pleasure – a winning streak – late week. Maybe new love! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Delays end now, Pisces, especially in work, machinery and health areas. March steadily ahead in these for the next two weeks. Money matters are sparked Sunday p.m. to Tuesday. Spend, earn, buy and sell – Monday’s best. Midweek brings paperwork, short trips, details, news and casual friends. Be curious, ask questions. Friday afternoon through Saturday accents home, security, nutrition, children, gardening and retirement plans. A small seed planted here (Saturday) will grow into something big over the next ten months. Continue to avoid impulsive action in finances and intimacy. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 604-560-1269
