Bidding wars add to hot house prices
West Vancouver real estate market out of step with rest of Lower Mainland James Weldon
jweldon@nsnews.com
WHEN real estate agent Mike Oxley held an open house on Haywood Avenue last month, he knew that the flat Ambleside view property was going to be a popular item. He didn’t know how popular, however. By the end of a weekend that saw an estimated 500 prospective buyers view the home, the owners had received 26 offers. The house, which as a structure had little value, ultimately sold for $1.57 million — more than $300,000 over the asking price. “It was absolutely unbelievable,” he said. Oxley’s story is one of numerous similar anecdotes to emerge from West Vancouver in recent months in which prospective owners have entered bidding wars over a property and driven the purchase price to well above the listed figure. It points to a frenzy of buying at the high end of the market that appears out of keeping with most of the Lower Mainland. A home next door to the Haywood house received 10 offers a short See March page 3
NV’s top cop approves of civilian police investigators
Loren Romei
lromei@nsnews.com
THE B.C. government introduced legislation last week that will create an independent civilian office to investigate allegations of police misconduct resulting in death or serious harm.
The bill stems from the Braidwood Commission, which recommended an independent investigations body following the death of Robert Dziekanski in 2007 at Vancouver International Airport after he was tasered by police. Bill 12 would see the creation of the Independent Investigations Office, made up of civilians who would have the power to investigate municipal police departments and the RCMP. “It’s a positive thing for public confidence and it’s a positive thing for policing,” said Supt. Tonia Enger, North Vancouver RCMP police chief. Enger said past incidents regarding police misconduct have created questions over public trust in the police force. “The Dziekanski case, which is a tragic case, is a key impetus for the public See Police page 3

New Capilano bridge opens
$40M project will improve transit services Jeremy Shepherd

THE Marine Drive overpass opened Friday, replacing the 80-yearold two-lane West Vancouver Blue Bridge in a bid to ease traffic congestion between the Lions Gate Bridge and Taylor Way. The three-lane overpass is part of a $40-million project funded by the provincial and federal governments. The project is designed to bolster the economy and cut greenhouse gas emissions by putting more North Shore commuters into buses. “What we’ve found is that buses represent only two per cent of traffic on the Lions Gate Bridge but they carry 28 per cent of the people NEWS photo Paul McGrath crossing during the morning rush hour,” said TransLink TRAFFIC heads west towards Park Royal on the newly opened Marine Drive overpass across the Capilano River. RCMP seek help to Police accountability shifts find missing NV man From page 1
NORTH Vancouver RCMP are asking for the public’s help to find a 44-year-old North Vancouver man who walked away from his family home at around 8 a.m. on May 18 and hasn’t been seen since.
James (Jim) Barr left the home near Grouse Mountain on foot that morning. When he didn’t return by evening, family members became worried. James Barr Const. Geoff Harder, spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP, said police are concerned about Barr’s wellbeing. “It is out of character for Mr. Barr to be out of contact with his family. As time goes by our concern only grows,” said Harder. Harder said Barr left the house just as his wife was taking their children to school. He didn’t indicate where he was going and left his cellphone at home. Barr was supposed to be on a flight to Powell River Wednesday as part of a business trip, but “he didn’t make his flight,” said Harder. Harder said Barr hasn’t been seen or heard from since Wednesday morning. He did not take a vehicle and his credit card has not been used. Harder said police don’t believe it would be likely for Barr to have gone hiking. He added police have no reason to believe his disappearance is linked to any crime. Barr is a Caucasian man, 5’9”, weighing about 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, a light plaid shirt and dark tan pants. Anyone with information to report can call 9-1-1 or can contact the North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311. — Jane Seyd

wanting some independent oversight on police investigating police,” she said. “We as police officers know that we are kind of the guardians for the public and that we are the people’s police . . . it’s imperative that we try and either regain or maintain the public trust and this is one avenue that we need to implement in order to instill public trust, and that’s why we support it,” Enger said. She said that an independent investigations office is not new in Canada, and that both Ontario and Alberta have similar models. “It has been a long time coming, and it is a result of the work of family members who have had a family member die as a result of police action,” said David Eby, executive director at B.C. Civil Liberties Association. “This is a major shift in police accountability in British Columbia, previously the police would investigate themselves. Now the province has taken that responsibility away from them for the most serious incidents: deaths and serious bodily harm,” said Eby. He said it remains to be seen whether the province will remove all police misconduct investigations, including minor incidents, from the police. The legislation states members of the Independent Investigations Office must not have served as a police officer. However, the office’s director could choose to appoint police officers if they have not served in B.C. within the past five years. The investigations office will be able to interview witnesses and gather evidence to conduct criminal investigations into police-
related incidents. The investigators will have equal status to a police officer and will report to the Ministry of Attorney General. Rollie Woods, deputy police complaint commissioner at the B.C. Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner, which oversees municipal police forces including the West Vancouver police detachment, said he is supportive of the Independent Investigations Office. Woods said he looks forward to the B.C. Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner and the Independent Investigations Office working together, as it seems some of their investigations may overlap. “It’s a good start and we will have to see how it works and then go from there,” Woods said. He said there could be some challenges with having enough resources to conduct an independent investigation separate from the police. “There are going to be some challenges. . . . Are they going to have their own forensics, ballistics, and labs, and things like that, or are they still going to count on the police to help them out?” he asked. “Exactly how much is the (Independent Investigations Office) going to be able to do on their own and how much are they going to rely on the police to assist them?” asked Woods. But, he said the Independent Investigations Office is a step in the right direction and he is hopeful it will improve people’s trust in police. The government is still determining the office’s location, budget, and staffing requirements. The office should be up-andrunning by the end of 2011.
while after that first sale and eventually went for $1.65 million — $360,000 above asking, said Oxley. Another in the 2300-block of Ottawa Avenue recently received eight bids and sold for $2.3 million, again for about $300,000 above the listed price. “As soon as the quoteunquote spring market came into effect, it’s just been a firestorm of activity,” said Oxley. In March, the community saw 189 sales, according to the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, an all-time record for the municipality. In April, home sales hit 176, a 57 per cent increase over last year. The average price of a home has also been on the upswing, with the benchmark price for a detached house hitting $1.67 million in April, well up from the $1.4 million-to-$1.5 million range where it has hovered for the past three years. While North Vancouver has also seen a surge in activity in recent months, it doesn’t appear to be on the same scale. April sales were down about 10 per cent from last year, and the benchmark price of a detached home, $980,000, is only about six per cent above its high before the 2008 market collapse. Kasha Riddle, an agent with North Vancouver’s Remax Crest Realty, said she has seen good times in her market, moving 25 properties in three months — and one of those, on Croydon Place, went for $60,000 above the listed price — but that North Vancouver has not seen anything like the frenzy that appears to have arisen in the neighbouring municipality. “In West Vancouver, some of them are selling for $500,000 over asking,” she said, pointing to one home on Crestline Road as an example. “West Van is absolutely crazy.” The phenomenon appears to be part of a wider trend in high-end home sales in the region driven in large part by buyers from mainland China, according to some analysts. A report on the Canadian real estate market released last week by RE/MAX pointed to a surge in the sales of luxury homes across the country, with overseas investment being a driving factor in the West. A May 19 report by Landcor Data Corporation, a company that specializes in B.C. real estate statistics, similarly pointed to China as the major force behind the Lower Mainland’s market. for Urban Economics and Real Estate, cautioned against drawing such conclusions. “Who knows?” he said. “It becomes very problematic sorting things out.” Somerville did concede, however, that it was a plausible explanation. “There is grounds for it in the sense that mainland China is the largest source of immigrants (to the Lower Mainland) right now,” he said. “Immigrants coming from China are disproportionately in the entrepreneur and investor categories; they’re coming in
with wealth.” Why it might suddenly be happening now, however, was hard to say, he noted. Somerville scoffed at the notion, floated by Landcor in an interview with the North Shore News last month, that it could be attributed to the Olympics, or to Canada’s recent designation as an approved destination by the Chinese government. “I would be very shocked,” said Somerville. “The approval by China affects tourism here; that’s not the same thing.” One thing is for certain about the flurry of purchases, however, he said: “It’s not sustainable.”
Have you lost any copper wire lately? NORTH Vancouver RCMP are looking for the owner of 150 feet of possibly stolen copper wire.
Police stopped a North Vancouver man who was towing a cart filled with wire behind his bicycle near Hunter Street and Mountain Highway on May 21, according to Const. Geoff Harder. “It was a suspicious circumstance,” he said.
The man has not been charged. Investigators believe the wire is stolen but have not been able to find the owner of the copper wire. “The financial impact of wire-theft is much more than the cost of the wire itself,” said Const. Geoff Harder. “It can cost thousands of dollars in labour to replace the stolen wire.” — Jane Seyd

T’S plausible that those involved in the public process surrounding the creation of a new District of North Vancouver official community plan have checked the municipal website and will know about tonight’s special council meeting that will weigh the opinions expressed over two night’s worth of public hearing last week. It’salsotruethatcouncilcannotlegally hear arguments from any source now that the public hearing has been closed. But scheduling the council meeting that could decide how the future will look in North Vancouver on the Wednesday after a long weekend with little time to get the word out seems hasty. Given that the district put considerable effort into advertising the OCP process and getting its residents to participate, the rush to judgment appears to contradict
the advertised inclusiveness. Perhaps that’s not surprising. The district’s recent move away from local area plans will undoubtedly put more decision-making in the hands of municipal hall. While such a move is certainly typical of how business is conducted in many municipalities, it’s a step back from the direct democracy the district boldly tried for a few years when it embarked on an ambitious process in the 1990s that was intended to move the planning process to a local level. We understand that such an approach is time-consuming and tends to result in status-quo preservation, but the density figures contained in the new OCP are the nitty gritty of the “big picture.” The final debate over that contradiction should have been staged more carefully.

Fraser Institute misses full school story
Dear Editor: Regarding your May 13 story, WV Schools Ranked Top 10 in B.C.: I was perplexed and disappointed in reading this front page article in our local, supposedly community-minded newspaper, the North Shore News. I’m confused as to why the North Shore News would decide to place the secondary school rankings offered by the Fraser Institute on the front page of the newspaper. The study has been, each year, controversial. It’s been well documented that its findings are not encompassing of the many diverse programs, student population and activities that take place in each unique school. These so called rankings are a limited tally of limited data collected, that’s all. Yes, the Fraser Institute can argue that they are merely releasing its findings based on its collected data. But what gives this controversial study merit is papers like the North Shore News. Our daughters have both, miraculously, made it through
Carson Graham secondary unscathed and, if one considers its bottom-ranking school standing, are surprisingly bright, vibrant and successful young people. Our oldest daughter is in the midst of post-secondary applications with the tremendous support and assistance of her teachers and counsellors at Carson. She attends school with other high-achieving students, some are even going to attend Ivy League schools! Many have academic and athletic scholarships from institutions both in Canada and beyond. Now, my husband and myself know that Carson is a terrific, competitive school. We know our school, its administration and its teachers. We know what these professionals give to and offer all of the students, each and every day. Not just the wealthy, academically minded students, but the ESL students, students with unique needs and unique skills and talents. We know how proud many families are of what Carson has provided. We know how hard-working everyone is at Carson — parents,
teachers, administration and the students — to make it the best, well-rounded educational program it can. I haven’t even touched on the athletics, the community involvement through volunteerism both locally and abroad, the outstanding music and theatre programs (just to highlight a few) and all the dedicated professionals that make those things happen. And, at the end of it all, we know this school did not need this unfair and negative attention. I hope that this letter is published so that other community members can read it and form a more rounded opinion of Carson Graham secondary. And, for those considering a great high school for their growing children, don’t listen to the Fraser Institute. Listen to those that have actually set foot in the school and have benefited from attending. Joanne Penney North Vancouver

The price of development
Dear Editor: On Monday, April 25, at around 6 p.m., my son Levi (a Capilano University student) was out on his five-kilometre run in North Vancouver, when he collapsed, his heart in a state of cardiac arrest. Levi was incredibly fortunate, because he was found fairly quickly by a retired nurse, who was joined by first one, then two other people trained in CPR. They

continued the CPR until fire services and the ambulance arrived and the defibrillator was administered — an amazing eight minutes after they were dispatched. Still comatose, he was rushed by ambulance to Lions Gate Hospital emergency department. Dr. Geddes in emergency told us that, although the response time was quick, it was the immediate, effective, CPR that kept circulation moving to the brain and
essential organs until the heart could be restarted. We are so impressed with the citizens of North Vancouver. People gave help when it was needed without question. The quality of care at Lions Gate Hospital was exceptional. What a great community North Vancouver is. Jean Swann 100 Mile House
Dear Editor: I am complaining about the traffic disruption on Mount Seymour Parkway caused by the two developments being built there. This morning, for instance, the traffic lanes eastbound are completely shut off and you have to detour into the turn lane into the shopping centre access — which is also shut off. I am sure the contractors are doing their best, but I think the whole idea of allowing such massive construction to take place in those sites was a bad mistake on the part of the council of the time. We should all plug into hydro discussion “A B.C. Liberal government will: Protect BC Hydro and all of its core assets, including dams, reservoirs and power lines under public ownership.” A New Era for British Columbia, 2001
UNDER the heading “A New Era of Hope,” that promise was 10th in a list of 14 on page 9 of the contract B.C. Liberals made with the electorate prior to the May 2001 provincial election. The ninth, of course, was that they would “not sell or privatize BC Rail.” In reality, so many promises were broken that, had they been made by a door-to-door salesman, the huckster would have been made to shuffle his orange overalls down the corridors of justice. Instead, we bought into the pitch, 77 ridings to two. Last week, I thought I had written much of what I had to say about BC Hydro. But
Just Asking
Elizabeth James I was stopped in my tracks by an email from Bill — a North Shore reader who pays attention to political goingson. Referring to the comment I used to end last week’s column — “Will the information be put to good use, or will we just shrug and pay the bills?” — Bill responded: “Fair enough, but what’s the solution? Most readers, including me, won’t have a clue about what can be done. . . .” He suggested that when I throw out a challenge like that, I have “a duty to suggest an appropriate solution or
some alternatives.” Now Bill is a man I have known on and off for more than 10 years. I knew his remarks were born of frustration, not annoyance. He, too, believes that the election solution is “too long to wait.” So playing the “if-I-were premier” game, and knowing my non-technical approach may be insufficient, I rose to his challenge. In the hope the ideas will provoke others to submit their own contributions, here is the padded-out version of my reply to Bill. First, I would slam the brakes on the Site C dam project. Based on the government’s own statistics, economist Erik Andersen has done extensive analysis on population trends and per-capita energy requirements. He makes a good case for the need for far less power capacity than Hydro predicts, but, close as both sides are to the politics of the issue, neither can be considered unbiased. So I would consult internationally
respected, impeccably armslength energy experts to evaluate the short- and longterm needs of the province. Second, I would take the same, urgent, approach to the financial and environmental aspects of the proposed dam. British Columbians deserve a far more transparent business plan than they have seen to date. Yes, we know financials can change — escalate — as details of a project unfold. But there is a worrying degree of fiscal sloppiness in the way project costs have escalated from the original $3-billion approximation to the latest guesstimate of $8 billion. Trust being in short supply, are the numbers being tossed out willy-nilly to see where the sticking point is for B.C. taxpayers? British Columbians should surely be asking: What is one more year when you’re spending $8 billion or more of our money? Environmentally, I do not want to see farmland communities flooded if there are less-invasive alternatives. Although some people
consider the affected Peace lands to be “marginal” for traditional farming purposes, it still can grow grasses and trees to support wildlife, or short-rotation crops for the biomass used in production of alternative energy solutions. Third, B.C. rivers are not poker chips to be gambled away at the whim of a profligate government. So I would take a tough legal approach to public examination of the deals struck between the provincial government — which for years included Christy Clark as deputy premier — and independent power producers. Many years ago, former premier W.A.C. Bennett proclaimed British Columbia

is for British Columbians, period. BC Hydro is owned — in trust — by the people of this province. And if we don’t want to lose everything past generations of taxpayers built and passed on to us, we need to defend Bennett’s position. Arguably, “the people” includes First Nations citizens, as well as any other Canadians, immigrants and future generations who might arrive here to live. That is what our province is all about. Bill, you have my sincere thanks for challenging me to walk my talk. Terminal security concerns QUESTION:
Why is there not special night security present seven days a week at the North Vancouver bus terminal by the SeaBus for the sake of preventing such brutal assaults on totally innocent victims as the Jan. 28 machete attack on exchange students? What is the purpose of the little, empty, dirt-spattered hut sitting in the southwest corner Ask a Cop of the bus loop? I presumed with a sigh of relief when it Peter DeVries was put there that it would be staffed at all times — especially at night — for security reasons. Instead, it sits there, looking dilapidated and empty all the time. The taxpaying population, financing the police department’s salaries among others, needs to feel secure in that particular spot, especially arriving late at night via the SeaBus. I am taking the SeaBus and bus more frequently these days, so the car stays at home more often — which is a good thing. But we need a “guardian angels” type of force in that area. Lower Lonsdale does have a certain reputation, one that was also emphasized by RCMP Sgt. Paul Duffy at our Blockwatch meeting last year. Gunda Fernandes North Vancouver Dear, Gunda: Thank you for your question. I want to respectfully point out that you make two assumptions that may not be supported by fact. First, you assume there is no TransLink or Coast Mountain Bus Company night security at Lonsdale Quay. I don’t know that this is the case. Although I have frequently seen security personnel at the Quay, I cannot speak to these private companies’ security procedures and personnel management, nor about the purpose or use of the security hut of which you speak. Perhaps if one of their employees reads this column, he or she will write in to give us a clear answer. However, until then, I advise asking questions before passing judgment.

Second, you make the assumption that having personnel present would have prevented this crime and others from happening. I’m not convinced that this is true either. Imagine if a security officer from Coast Mountain or TransLink had been present when the attack occurred. What could he or she have done? Remember, they are unarmed. I would never expect an unarmed person to take on a machete-wielding attacker, and although the presence of security personnel does help to deter some crimes from happening, it certainly does not prevent them in every case. In the absence of good information about private security at the Quay, perhaps I can offer some perspective from the experience of a police officer about how we might approach such issues. First, let’s place the responsibility squarely where it belongs: on the individual offenders who commit such horrible crimes. Then, let’s take up the cause as citizens to ensure that our police and court system continues to deal appropriately and adequately with criminals who are brought before our judges to answer for their crimes, not only to deter them from committing them again, but also to give them the best possible chance for rehabilitation. Finally, let’s look to ourselves as individual contributors to our communities for ways to help make our cities safer. We collectively have the loudest, strongest voice; we need to stand up together and say “no” to these crimes. We need to watch and report incidents we see in our neighbourhoods, so that police can prevent offenders from victimizing again. We need to support our community services and those who work to improve the quality of life for our neighbours and us. We also need to lend a helping hand to the desperate, to help them to find a way not to commit crimes. Most of all we need to be ready and willing to comfort those who have been victimized by crimes. Sadly, crimes will continue to happen, and people will continue to get hurt; it is up to us all to care for those who are affected by them. Sgt. DNV to revamp tree bylaw
Council sends proposed changes to public open houses Tessa Holloway
tholloway@nsnews.com
THE District of North Vancouver is planning to give homeowners more power to remove large trees on their property — for a price. Under an overhaul of the tree bylaw set to go to open houses across the district this spring, any resident will be able to get a permit to remove a large tree as long as it’s not near a creek, on a slope or on district land. But they would have to either replace the tree on their property or pay a $500 fee. The goal is to maintain the forested character of North Vancouver while giving residents more power over their property, said Richard Boase, district environmental protection officer. The proposal was brought forward after a Delbrook resident came to council and complained that district staff had refused to give her a permit to remove a healthy tree in her yard. “Now an owner, it’s at their sole discretion whether they want to remove the tree or not, and they have options,” Boase told council at a workshop held to examine the changes. The previous bylaw was vaguely worded, said Boase, and staff had occasionally declined to give a permit because there wasn’t sufficient justification to remove the tree. Trees provide shading
and environmental benefits to the district, he said. Under the new bylaw, removing a tree with a 75-centimetre trunk radius would require the permit, while all smaller trees can be removed at any time. Homeowners who opt to replace the tree will need one new tree for lots smaller than 420 square metres, or three trees for larger lots. The changes would still protect trees on slopes, near creeks or on district land, though homeowners could apply to have the tree on district land pruned if it overhangs their property, so long as it doesn’t kill the tree. District staff would still have to approve any pruning, though residents would be able to appeal to council. As well, residents could choose to hire an arborist and have the tree declared a hazard, in which case the fee would be waived. The new bylaw rewords some definitions and adds protections for rare trees. “I think we’re making a fairly significant leap while keeping the intent of the bylaw,” said David Stuart, district CEO. The changes garnered enough council support to go ahead with public hearings, and it’s expected a revised bylaw will come before council before the summer break. Coun. Alan Nixon said staff “just about nailed this,” but felt the fees could be even higher, especially if the resident doesn’t get a permit. “There are people all over this district who will gladly pay a $500 fine to deal with a large tree,” he said. Coun. Doug MacKay-Dunn raised concerns that the bylaw was too complex and that the bylaw may still be too strict on homeowners. “Legislation in my view should be simple, concise and fair, and I think this fails,” he said.
Water conservation regulations change
NORTH Shore residents will have 15 hours a week to water their lawns from June 1 to Sept. 30, according to new Metro Vancouver regulations. This year’s regulations limit watering to three days a week and all watering must be done between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. Early-morning watering results in less evaporation. Metro Vancouver put the
rules in place because water use tends to double while season rainfall is at its lowest. The restriction permits residents of even-numbered addresses to turn on their sprinklers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Odd-numbered addresses can slake their lawn’s thirst on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. For people with newly planted lawns, an exception can
be made if you acquire a permit from your municipality. Exemptions are also permitted for watering flowers, vegetable gardens, trees, planters, as well as for filling pools and washing cars. Exceptions are also made for playing fields and golf courses. Metro Vancouver recommends allowing your lawn to turn brown for the summer or leaving grass clippings on the lawn to trap moisture and

DECORATIVELY wrapped chocolates or mints make the perfect take home gift at a wedding or baby shower.
Give sweets as a party treat
DIG DEEP Pests and diseases are a problem, but don’t overreact. Look for practical solutions, writes Todd Major. Page 15
BEAUTIFUL bouquets, floral centrepieces, sweets and savories all make up the fine points for a wonderful wedding or baby shower.
It really is all in the details if you want to host a shower that your guests will remember. If you are planning to host a wedding or baby shower anytime soon here are a few ideas and tips to help you get started. Guests love to take a small gift home. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive but something that carries the theme of the party and acts as a final send-off. Mints and chocolates are perfect for this kind of gift. For a baby shower make small,

Barb Lunter clear cones with rolls of cellophane from your local craft store. With a sharp pair of scissors, cut a square in the dimensions of 14-inch x 14-inch from the cellophane. Fold over one adjacent corner to the other. Repeat two more times. A small cone shape should appear.
Secure with clear tape. Trim the top edges and fill the cone with mints or pastel coloured chocolates. Tie off with a pretty ribbon that coordinates with the pastel colours of your shower. These little guest favors are also wonderful for wedding showers. Craft stores such as Michaels have wedding sections that are filled with all kinds of wedding-themed decorating ideas. One of the items you will find there are miniature, white chocolate boxes. These are great for filling with mints or chocolates and you can finish them off with a pretty, cream-coloured flower such as a rose. Assemble an assortment of these boxes and arrange them on a platter by the
dessert table. Another cute idea for a shower is to sugar the rims of your champagne flutes with pastel-coloured fine sugar. All that is required is powdered food colouring. Simply add the food colouring to the fine sugar and dip the edge of the glass into a small plate filled with fresh lemon juice. Carefully invert the glass into the sugar and let dry. Remember to write the name of the guest for each gift that is given to the guest of honor. One way to do this is to keep the card or gift tag from each present and write on the card what the gift was and whom it was from. Place all the cards in a preassembled envelope to give to the guest of honor when she leaves. lunter@shaw.ca
It’s only natural, of course. Take a stroll down Lonsdale Avenue when the sun finally does come out and you’ll experience it first hand. We all want sunlight. We need it. Why is it then that so many homes fail to capture it? The relative position of the sun in the sky is determined by the time of day and by the season of the year. In northern latitudes facing south means facing the sun. It will rise in the east and set in the west. We all know this but we often fail to translate this understanding into a meaningful expression when it comes to our homes. When laying out a new home the first thing the designer will do is determine the lighting requirements for specific spaces and then locate these spaces to best take advantage of natural light. This typically means maximizing southern exposure (for us dwellers in the northern hemisphere) and often encourages a form that stretches along an east-west axis. Not every property affords such a layout so understanding the movement of the sun to best capture its rays is an essential first step for any See Kitchen page 14

spaces it enters. Light coming from two directions is always ideal. This might be from windows on adjacent walls or from a window wall and skylight above but having light illuminate a space from two directions adds a vividness to the room and enhances its three-dimensionality. The use of a wall or ceiling surfaces as a reflector can create interesting and appealing lighting options while helping illuminate from multiple directions as well. Morning light is best utilized by morning activity areas such as en-suites and breakfast nooks while afternoon and evening light better illuminates spaces that buzz later in the day. Once a general room layout based on sun movement has been established the designer or architect begins to consider how this natural light will illuminate the

well-designed overhangs will block out the unwanted, near-vertical rays of summer while still allowing the warming light of a winter sun to make its way deep into the home. Everything seen in space is perceived and understood through the light that falls upon it. The more we anticipate how natural light affects our layout, the more we move towards an optimal design for our homes.

ONE of the first steps of laying out a new home is determining how to best capture natural light. Light entering a room from two directions is ideal.

Find a realistic approach to disease control GARDENERS know that new spring growth is often accompanied by insect pests and plant diseases.
Dig Deep
Todd Major
My first advice to anyone who has a pest or disease problem in the garden is don’t overreact — look at the big picture and do some research. Here are a few basic pest and disease control strategies that are cost effective with a low environmental impact. Let’s look at a common insect pest that is widespread in our region — aphids, which are pests of most ornamental and vegetable crops in gardens. The presence of a few aphids is a good thing for those hungry predator insects that need
an early spring meal. Complete elimination of aphids from the garden is not realistic and would consequently eliminate all of the predatory insects who will move elsewhere to find food. Plant health rule: Don’t create imbalances that will create more work and cost more money to fix. The traditional chemical spray for aphids not only kills the aphids, it kills the predatory insects as well, leaving an imbalance when the aphids return, and they will return. If you think of the financial and time cost to drive to the garden centre and buy pesticide and then return home to spray the aphids; control could be

attained less expensively and without breaking the plant health rule, by water-washing the aphids onto the ground where they become food for other insects. Or if the aphid colony is small, leave it alone to allow predatory insects to find the aphids to apply control for you. Plant health rule: Do not apply additives that will compound or create problems growing the crop. A case in point, the use of chemical fertilizer which is known to cause soft growth in plants that is a favourite food of insect pests since it is softer and easier to eat than the normal lean plant growth. In an article by Science Daily (www.sciencedaily.com) on Jan. 28, 2011, plant biologists of the University of Zürich and American researchers demonstrated that faster (plant) growth comes at an added cost: aphids reproduce faster on these plants than on slow growing plants with intact defense mechanisms. Tobias Züst of the University of Zürich explains: “This is a result of the fact that fast growing plants provide more resources to the herbivore (plant pest) than slow growing plants in the same amount of time.” The study shows that natural resistance is not compatible with fast growth. Züst said, “This finding is of great importance for agricultural crops. These crops have been selected for high yield and as a consequence have very low natural resistance to herbivores (plant eating pests); consequentially such crops require high input of insecticides.” The lesson is that if you fertilize you will have pests due to soft growth and inhibited plant defense mechanism. More pests lead to more pesticide spraying which requires more fertilizer to counteract the suppressing affect that insecticides inflict on plant growth. The
result is a perpetual cycle of drug dependant plants, wasted time and money by the grower or gardener. The solution is to grow garden plants at a natural rate so they and their accompanying predatory insects will control the pest problems naturally. Does this work? Absolutely and I very successfully implemented such a system for more than ten years when I was the director of Park and Tilford Gardens. I also use the same system in my home garden and I have few if any pest and disease problems. A picture of my healthy and vibrant front yard garden was shown in the NS News in my April 6, 2011 column. Plant Health Rule: Learn to accurately identify the type of pest or disease problem and the extent of damage, then determine the underlying cause of the problem. Insect or disease infestation is not the problem, it’s the symptom. If you can learn what is causing the pest or disease infestation then you can permanently control the problem. If you do not learn the real cause of pest or disease attack, then you will sentence yourself to a lifetime of pesticide and fertilizer application and never solve the underlying problem. And who benefits from that, no one but the pests and multi-national pesticide manufacturers. I would like to provide more rules for controlling pests and diseases but that will come in a future column. But now it’s time for us all to act to help our children have a safe, clean and healthy environment in their future. Please visit www.donmcraemla.bc.ca, the website for MLA Don McRae who is the BC Agricultural Minister. On his webpage there is a poll on cosmetic pesticide use in B.C. Please vote to help guide our leaders in making the safe decision on cosmetic pesticide use in our province. stmajor@shaw.ca

The Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School is accepting new students. Our school specializes in educating and growing the confidence of students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities in grades 1 through 8. For 38 years, The Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School has helped kids build skills and develop tools to be successful throughout their lives. We empower students by unlocking and removing obstacles to learning so each child can experience personal achievement. KGMS is a fully accredited, private, non-profit, co-educational day school. Our highly credentialed and experienced faculty work as a team to adapt an educational approach to individual needs and learning styles Our program is designed to develop the whole child. We tailor our teaching program to each student, building the program around the child rather than fitting the child into a rigid program. This endeavor is complex, requiring many people, programs and services to address each child’s unique needs. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT MR. Eating should be fun MEALTIME is a pleasure.
Growing up I always enjoyed sitting down with friends and family for good conversation and food. Then I hit my twenties and suddenly it wasn’t always pleasant. I’d go out for lunch with a friend and she would spend the bulk of the time agonizing about what she could and couldn’t eat. At one point I got to the stage where I would eat before a lunch out so I could order the tiny servings that my friends chose and not leave the restaurant still hungry. Today we are experiencing a child obesity problem. Ironically it’s impacting all kids, the husky ones, the average ones, the skinny ones and yes, the obese. We are obsessed with what our kids are eating. And they know it.
Parenting Today Kathy Lynn
The problem is that all this focus on nutrition and positive eating habits is having some unintended consequences. We want to teach our kids to eat well but all this talk and concern about eating is making it into a challenge rather than a pleasure. Kids need to eat to live. Well, so do we. And it’s
better to eat nutritious and healthy meals rather than junk food. There is a school in San Antonio Texas where they are going to document exactly what every child (with parent permission) eats for lunch. They’re installing sophisticated cameras in the cafeteria line and trash area that read food bar codes embedded in the food trays. They will then know exactly what has been served and when the child returns the tray they will measure the leftovers. The idea is to plan cafeteria meals based on what kids really eat. I’m not sure what the reaction will be when they discover that the desserts, chips and french fries are consumed and the salads returned.

Offer children choices
Council and Capilano Mall will present a celebration of arts including music and dance performances and children’s art activities. All events are free. Music and dance performances will take place May 22, 1-5 p.m. and art activities take place 1-4 p.m. Info: www.nvartscouncil. ca/events/may-art-monthmay-14-15.
From page 20 These kids know about the cameras, even if they haven’t actually been told. Our kids know about the discussions concerning school vending machines. They get all the lectures about good food and bad food. All this focus on nutrition leads kids to think there is something wrong with them. Recently I received a news release from TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), the nonprofit weight-loss support organization. They focused on all the messages we received when we were kids and may now be passing on to our children. Two messages have to do with how much the kids eat. On a good day we may say, “You’re such a good eater!” and on a bad day “You’re such a picky eater!” When we notice how much our kids have eaten they may believe they are always expected to chow down whether they are really hungry or not. They live to please us and if eating a big meal is the answer, they will do it. It’s better to relax and let your children eat what they need at dinnertime. Some nights they will be hungrier than others. Calling children picky (even when they are) may not respect them. Everyone has some foods they just don’t like. Just offer a good meal, with a variety of choices. You can ask them to take one small bite just to try something but beyond that, enjoy dinner. Using dessert as a bribe is never a good idea “if you don’t eat all your veggies you won’t get dessert” gives the message that veggies are so bad they need a bribe to eat them. Better that you don’t have dessert every night. If dessert is a treat with Sunday dinner and the rest of the week the meal stands alone kids will learn to eat whatever is offered. They also learn that you don’t need sweets with every meal. Kids learn by modeling so don’t moan and whine about your weight. Serve healthy meals and enjoy your dinner. Don’t lecture kids about nutrition All the talk about nutrition can backfire. Kids should just eat and enjoy without having to agonize about what they are putting in their mouths. Offer healthy meals and they will learn to make good choices.

Lynn Valley Lions a Great Community Resource As you watch the Lynn Valley Days Parade, stroll the Midway with candy floss in hand and sample the treats at the cookshack, it’s worth remembering the dedicated residents of Lynn Valley whose hard work makes it all happen: the Lynn Valley Lions Club. Founded in 1970, the Lynn Valley Lions Club is part of a world-wide service club organization committed to improving people’s lives around the world and at a local level, your neighbourhood. Today, while Lynn Valley Days may be their highestprofile project the Lynn Valley Lions are busy all year round, raising funds and doing great work to improve the lives of North Shore residents. From their Christmas Tree sales in December and other fund raising events, the Lions can be seen at almost every
celebration. Their Cookshacks have become a staple of community gatherings across North Vancouver and will be a centrepiece of the Lynn Valley Days festivities. Funds raised stay on the North Shore. Every Easter, Lions Club members distribute chocolates to seniors at Evergreen House, Lions Gate Palliative Care Centre, Cedarview Lodge and Lynn Valley Lodge. Each Christmas, the Lions purchase, assemble and deliver Christmas hampers to local families in need. The Lynn Valley Lions also organize a summer youth exchange where four North Shore students-with a chaperone- visit North Vancouver’s sister city of Chiba, Japan and four Japanese students visit the North Shore. The visitors are welcomed with
a great Lions Barbecue and visit Victoria, Whistler and Seattle for a Mariners’baseball experience as part of their trip. So when you’re sharing the fun of a great Lynn Valley Days with family and friends, stop by the Lions’Cookshack and treat yourself to a burger or hot dog. You’ll be helping your neighbours. If helping out and having fun sounds like a good idea to you, call the Lynn Valley Lions Club at 604-987-9623 and ask about joining. The dues are minimal. They ask you to attend three meetings to see if it’s right for you. If everyone agrees, then you’re in. The object is to have fun and serve you community. It’s a great way to help out.

Lynn Valley Day!
99th Annual Lynn Valley DaysA Celebration Of Heritage We think of the North Shore as a fairly new place. While it’s true that most of the residential growth has come in the last 50 years, there are neighbourhoods across North and West Vancouver whose roots extend back in timebefore the Lions Gate Bridge, before the Canada we know existed.
Founded in 1911, the Lynn Valley Community Association has been at the forefront of youth programs, official community planning, the preservation of Lynn Canyon Park, the 2010 Olympic and Valley Fest events and Lynn Valley Days.
Celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, the Lynn Valley Community Association was also instrumental in the renovation of Mollie Nye House and its establishment as a community centre.
With members drawn from local businesses and neighbourhoods, the Lynn Valley Lions Club and the Lynn Valley Community Association are dedicated service groups committed to bettering the Lynn Valley community and having fun while doing it.

Proud to be part of this great community.
In 1971, they approached the newly chartered Lynn Valley Lions Club and asked if its members would take on the responsibilities of organizing and running the annual fair. The Lynn Valley Lions Club members accepted the challenge and have turned Lynn Valley Days into one of the North Shore’s most popular local celebrations ever since.

In the late 1800’s, J. M. Fromme built Lynn Valley’s first house on District Lot 2023 and a subdivision shortly followed. Soon there was a general store and a growing population- with many residents employees of the nearby Spicer Shingle Mill. In 1912, with the assistance of the Boy Scouts, a group of local business owners and organizations decided to stage a celebration for their community. Lynn Valley Days were here to stay. Up until 1970, Lynn Valley Days celebration was organized on a hit and miss basis by volunteer residents who planned and staged the parade and activities associated with the annual May festivities.

YOUR NORTH SHORE GUIDE to EXCEPTIONAL CUISINE
The Earl’s favourite snack
Deana Lancaster dlancaster@nsnews.com
THOUGH there is always some dissension when it comes to history, it is usually agreed that John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, gets the credit for popularizing our favourite lunchtime staple. The story goes that the Earl was a seasoned gambler and usually gambled for hours at a time. Apparently, he ordered his valet to bring him meat tucked between two pieces of bread, so as not to get grease on his cards. Soon others began to order “the same as Sandwich!” He was obviously onto something. No matter where you travel in the world you’re likely to encounter some variation of the Earl’s humble snack, whether it’s a panini, banh mi, shawarma or croque monsieur. The global downturn in the economy did nothing to damage the sandwich’s reputation, either.

RACHEL Yoon, of the Lunch Bucket Deli, shows off the popular roasted turkey BLT. The café is open weekdays. In fact, some reports have consumers skipping fancy restaurant lunches more often in recent years in favour of a simple stack of bread and filling. Those who work south of North Vancouver’s Marine Drive have a favourite destination for fresh-made sandwiches: The Lunch Bucket Deli. It’s open weekdays, which makes sense, since its industrial
stretch of Pemberton is crowded with auto repair and car stereo shops, and the regular clientele are around Monday to Friday. I dropped in for a date with my dad recently, and discovered a slice of almost small-town comfort: from the colourful lunch boxes affixed to one wall and the Canucks posters lining the counter to the cheery greetings offered by owners and staff.
The menu isn’t extensive. Breakfast options include eggs and bacon, breakfast sandwiches and wraps, bagels and muffins. At lunch, there’s some added choice: more than a dozen stackers — both hot and cold — made to order, all ringing in somewhere around $5. Choose from fresh-roasted turkey or beef, capicollo, Italian salami, ham or Montreal smoked meat. There’s even a port schnitzel sandwich. Possible sides include the basics: pasta, soup and potato salads. There’s nothing too fancy here. My grilled roast beef was exactly what I was craving: thickly sliced and folded beef layered with Dijon, lettuce and tomato, between dense, toasty sourdough. Dad opted for the turkey BLT, a hefty low-rise of toasted bread and roasted turkey piled with bacon, lettuce and tomato. This is very simple food, done well. And the service? Though it’s mostly at the counter, it’s disarmingly helpful. Want milk? They’ll pour it from the big jug in the back fridge. Need a straw? Don’t bother yourself, they’ll grab you one. Through it all, NHL playoffs chit chat ricochets between Lunch Bucket owners and their customers, speculation and predictions about the final outcome run wild. The Earl would no doubt approve. The Lunch Bucket Deli is at 152 Pemberton Ave., North Vancouver. Call 604988-8162.

Salt and freshly ground pepper Whisk the shallot, mustard and lemon juice together. Slowly whisk in olive oil, stir in dill and then season with salt and pepper. Simmer the potatoes in salted water until just cooked; cut into quarter-inch thick slices while still warm and place in a single layer in a large dish. Whisk the dressing again and pour three quarters of it over potato slices; toss very gently to coat. Place the eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat, cover and leave for 15 minutes. Drain off water, then let cold water run over eggs in pan until eggs are cool. Peel the eggs and slice them quarterinch thick. Alternate slices of potato and egg in rows on a serving platter and drizzle with remaining dressing.

Cherry Tomato Salad This one couldn’t be any easier, but it looks beautiful and tastes even better. 2 cups cherry or grape tomatoes (a mix of red and yellow ones is nice) 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar ¼ cup olive oil 2 Tbsp slivered fresh basil Salt and freshly ground pepper Slice tomatoes in half; place in a bowl and toss with vinegar and olive oil; season with salt and pepper. Let marinate for four hours before serving. Garnish with basil just before serving.
Chunky Cucumber, Watermelon and Feta Salad Sounds like a weird combination, but it’s refreshing and delicious. ½ English cucumber 1 5” wide wedge seedless watermelon 1 Tbsp red wine vinegar 1 small garlic clove, minced 3 Tbsp olive oil Salt and freshly ground pepper 1⁄3 cup crumbled feta cheese 2 Tbsp shredded fresh mint Salt and freshly ground pepper Peel and seed cucumber; slice lengthwise, then lengthwise again, then crosswise into one-inch chunks. Whisk together vinegar, oil, garlic and salt and pepper to taste. Drizzle over watermelon and cucumber and stir to coat. Add mint and feta and toss gently. Serve at room temperature for best flavour.
Egg and Potato Salad You can also top this salad with ribbons of smoked salmon and serve as an appetizer. 1 lb. new red potatoes 3 eggs at room temperature Dressing: 1 shallot, finely chopped 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard 1 Tbsp lemon juice 5 Tbsp olive oil 2 tsp chopped fresh dill
This is particularly good with grilled fish. 8 oz dried farfalle (bow-tie) pasta ¾ cup frozen baby peas 1 lemon 1⁄3 cup milk 1⁄3 cup mayonnaise Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste ½ cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves, chopped 2 green onions, thinly sliced In large saucepan of salted boiling water, cook pasta until tender, adding frozen peas during last minute of cooking time. Drain pasta and peas; rinse with cold water and drain well. Grate 1½ teaspoons of zest from lemon and squeeze 1½ tablespoons of juice. In a large bowl, whisk together lemon juice and zest, milk, mayonnaise, pepper, basil and green onions. Taste and season with salt as desired. Add pasta and peas to dressing; toss to coat well. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour to allow flavours to develop.

It’s now only in the last 10 years that they have proven that in fact you can rebuild your brain cells,” says Wilson. She then teamed up with Dr. Justin Davis, a neuroscientist who has participated in a number of public and privately funded research projects about the central nervous system. “When I finished my PhD at UBC I realized there is a disconnect between all the fantastic research that’s being done by all the scientists at UBC, SFU and around the world with what everyday people understand about their brain,” says Davis, who is now the scientific director and product manager at Nognz. “It’s my goal to be a knowledge translator. Happy Father’s Day!
Track mom and dad’s medications
Among the findings of the study, which surveyed “future care givers,” were some interesting statistics about medications: ■ 51 per cent can’t name any medications their parents take daily; ■ 52 per cent who say their parents have allergies to medications can’t name these allergies;
■ 76 per cent can’t name their parents’ blood type. According to the study, the average age of these future caregivers is 54, and twothirds of them (or 66 per cent), are either employed full-time or self-employed. As for the health risks and challenges faced by their senior parents, the future caregivers say: ■ 59 per cent of their senior parents have at least two medical or health conditions, the most common being high blood pressure, arthritis, problems with mobility, heart disease and diabetes; ■ 43 per cent of senior parents take three
or more prescriptions, over-the-counter medications and supplements each day; ■ 36 per cent of senior parents have three or more factors that put them at risk for medication-related problems; ■ 23 per cent of senior parents have been hospitalized in the past year. Pronica Janikowski, of the Canadian Society of Consultant Pharmacists, says that (people) should be proactive and check what their parents are taking before a crisis happens. their brain health.” Part of his job description is to scour the different brain games and software out there to find the ones that are the most clinically validated and fun. A couple of Nognz’s top sellers include Q-bits, which combines visual spatial perception and memory, and Stacking Cups, a simple game that involves stacking and unstacking cups in various patterns by getting both hands to work together. “You can improve by manual
coordination and manual dexterity as well as those fine motor skills that you need to have,” says Davis, adding young aspiring hockey players should take note. Older adults tend to gravitate towards memory boosting and brain fitness software, he says. While certain games can be recommended for those suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia, they cannot serve as a cure for the disease. But there are activities that can help those dealing with other challenges such as attention deficit disorder or brain injuries. In addition, Nognz’s “brain
bar” offers edibles that are good for the brain, such as green tea, purple juices, dark chocolate and nuts. In-store activities include bridge classes, memory boot camps and meditation classes, which start next month. “It’s all about the experience here at Nognz. We want people to come in and try these products out, have a hands-on experience and find the ones that are best for them,” says Davis. They’ve also created an interactive online experience that allows visitors to create a personalized brain health plan, set up a daily goal tracker and find brain buddies interested in

So far, the feedback from the community has been positive, according to Wilson. “It was a good place, I felt, to test the market because it is an aging population,” she says, adding there are definitely plans for expansion in the works. “I would like to become the Running Room of brain fitness. BCO Volleyball Club’s U18 Elite Girls beat White Rock’s Seaside Club in a close gold medal match April 30.
SOCCER PLAYERS NEEDED!
Two years ago, almost identical rosters matched up in the finals, where North Shore fell just short of the win. Since then the teams have met over and over, and each time Seaside has had the edge, right up until the opening round of the Volleyball provincial championships last month, when the North Shore girls fell to the Surf once again. So when the two teams faced off in the provincial finals in the last week of April, the opponents were familiar, but the score was brand new, as the North Shore girls cruised to a victory in two sets. “They have a lot of history together so to beat them was a big feat for us,” said coach Dan Huzar. “I told the girls in the pre-game chat that we have nothing to lose. Everyone expects them to win and everyone expects us to lose, just go and have fun. And they did.” The win at provincials earned Huzar’s squad a berth at the national championships in Abbotsford May 13-15, where North Shore came home with the Bronze medal — also notably better than Huzar had expected. “It’s the best season I’ve had as a head coach thus far,” said Huzar, back at his day job as PE teacher at Sutherland secondary. The provincial gold-medal game was a close match in the first set, seesawing back and forth until North Shore developed a small lead, forcing Seaside to take a time out with the score at 20-18. They won that set 25-23 and went on to finish the second set 2519. North Shore managed to overcome the burden of history in the April 30 game through a lot of hard work and careful execution of See Defeated page 39

their game plan, said Huzar. The team watched videos from previous matches, zeroing in on where they needed to improve, and routinely gave up their Saturdays to practice. “It’s all extra hard work; it’s not like it’s natural ability,” he said. Come game time, they made sure to keep the opponent’s setters out of the game, by always serving the ball directly to them and attacking the same spot every time. By keeping the setter’s hands full, she couldn’t play her normal role of setting up the offense, said Huzar. “We chose that girl and hit the ball at her to take her out of the game,” he said. “They weren’t used to it because nobody’s done that against them before.” The team cruised through the first two days of nationals with six wins, but the competition got stiffer each day, said Huzar, until they met a Manitoba club in the semifinals and fell. “They were just a better team,” said the coach. The bronze medal match was also close, and saw the North Shore girls down 7-2 in the third set to the Ontariobased club DRVC. They battled back to make it 8-6 halfway through, and eventually won 16-14. Huzar chalks it up to determination once a gain. “The girls just decided they wanted to win and they were willing to do anything.” Huzar singled out the play of several players on the team, many of whom will be going onto university having earned coveted sports scholarships, including Katie Crawford for her leadership in both tournaments. “She doesn’t understand how to lose. Just not in her vocabulary,” said Huzar. “She got everyone on side. She’s a super strong leader and probably the best competitor I’ve ever coached in my life.” Crawford, an STA grad who will be off to UBC next year to play on one of the best volleyball teams in the country, is one of six North Shore players who earned volleyball scholarships, including Carson’s Katie Wuttunee, who will be attending Capilano University next year. While the team is largely made up of Grade 12 players, one Grade 11 player, Emily Oxland of Handsworth, also got special mention from the coach, as well as an all-star award in both provincials and nationals. “She’s a special setter. I’ll have a lot of choices for where to put her next year,” said Huzar.

BISSET - James Aug. 6th 1920-May 12th, 2011. Jim Bisset’s finally taking a day off after 90 years of hard work. He always played by the rules and was the most decent, honest guy anyone could ever meet. Just as he had an amazing work ethic, he was also able to take time to enjoy himself. A master shipwright, over the years he built a small fleet. To own a Bisset boat became a privilege. His friendship, generosity and wry sense of humour will be missed by his many friends and family. He’s got his boarding pass and is going where the fields are green, the thoroughbreds are fast, the women are beautiful, the stock market is always bullish, a man can get a decent rye & coke, and a couple of hundred board ft. of clear cedar can be bought at a good price.Jim, you were special. Thanks to all the caregivers and doctors at Mission Memorial who gave him the attention and respect he deserved. In lieu of flowers donations could be made in Jim’s memory to the Salvation Army, a cause he always supported. A memorial will be held at a later date.

CHILDREN
May is Child Care Month – Nannies Hiring a nanny is an alternative to a child care program especially in families where there is more than one child: • Nannies entering Canada from other countries do so through the Live-in Caregiver Program • Employers of nannies must abide by their province’s Employment Standards regulations • In Vancouver the West Coast Domestic Workers Association offers free legal advocacy, support and counseling to area nannies (604-669-4482). Recent research shows: • 70% of employers and placement agencies view nannies as professionals • First aid training was listed as the most important skill required for the job, others included the ability to assist in a child’s development, nutritional awareness, and discipline and guidance techniques • Nine out of ten families indicated they would assist in paying for a training program to increase nannies’ skills • For further information on nanny training call the number below. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! May 25/11
